was a difficult one but always good to think outside the box
Part of my chronological playthrough of the Nancy Drew series. If I were not hellbent on doing them all in order, I would have rage quit this one. It was so monotonous until the last day, nothing but chores and tasks that weren't even really puzzles, just conversions and busy work. I know this one is a nostalgic favorite for some people, but the game play just simply wasn't enjoyable to me at all. I would skip this one.
The game is excellent! Much better than the book.
Favorite Nancy Drew Game and book!!!
quick paced with a good flow easy to play and not bogged down good story and good ending
classic
My favourite, Nancy Drew Game. Will always play & replay!
My first Nancy Drew game from when I was a child. Still bangs.
Here's Shorty!
This was a tricky one; some of the puzzles took a little work to figure out, but the dialogue was excellent, the backstory of the treasure and the people involved was surprisingly romantic and melancholy, the whodunit aspect was good fun, and the puzzles were great, though a few were less fun than I'd like; the slot machine and the bridle puzzle in particular, but the rest of the puzzles were interesting and fun.
I found the puzzles to be just hard enough to make it fun
Game is ok, but the real killer is the tedium of getting Bob ready to ride. Open gate, turn, open door, turn, grab saddle, turn, open door, go to Bob, apply saddle, lift stirrup, tighten cinch three times, click Bob, click saddle, click gate, click path. EVERY TIME. Ditto the tedium of having to take of the saddle, put it in the stable, and get back outside.
I love ND games and I'm aiming to play all of them, but out of all 14 games I've played so far, this one was my least favorite. The story line is very easy to stall in; you can accidentally miss a trigger very easily and end up getting stuck somewhere without realizing what you missed in order to get to the next part of the story. Some of the puzzles are very unclear and clunky, and the horse riding mechanic is not intuitive at all. I also found a lot of the characters to be kind of flat and uninteresting, and although I love the Western environment, the world feels limited.
Big ND-Fan, but this one is just already a big no after 20 minutes. I dont know what they were thinking, the new inventory system is horrible, most voice actors are just weird (why is the horse guy doing ASMR?) and then the horse riding mechanic (or should I say the mechanic that will enable you to ride a horse) is so convoluted that I just couldnt get into it. Maybe I will revisit this one after im done with all of them, but for now, I am just gonna pass.
These games were a staple in my life growing up, and I will never not love them. Her Interactive made the best mysteries with amazing puzzles and unmatched vibes. Each of the Nancy Drew games has it's own unique mood. 10/10 amazing, and for the ones that aren't scary, they're awesome to train new younger gamers. The puzzles are challenging that I still will look up walkthroughs, even at 30.
I quite like this one. It gets you in the gut a few times, then at the end takes you out with the iconic line should you game over. You know the one.
also we <3 Dave Gregory
I love Nancy Drew games but I am really considering leaving this one unfinished. I have read the negative reviews and I agree 100%: tedious back and forth, repetitive multi-clicking for the most basic moves. The vegetable picking left me wondering what the difference was between one that was ripe and another one that wasn't. The harsh punishments when being kicked out due to little mistakes (not a good thing for kids playing this, in my opinion). You can get reprimands from any NPC in the game when you least expect it. Boring chores and frustrating lasso throwing and horse riding test. Pffff , and I have to get those right to be able to continue? Not sure I will. A game should allow you to enjoy and have fun. There is no balance between the amount of things you have to repeat to get them right and the discovery and achievement factor in this one.
An enjoyable experience, but I wouldn't recommend as your first rodeo with Nancy, as the story and puzzles are not the best from the franchise. Travelling in the game can be tedious, especially when your unsure what to do next.
I would recommend this to fans of the Nancy Drew games, but not a first time player. I found this to be so tedious I just started shamelessly using walkthroughs because I was so annoyed.
soo good
A genuinely interesting story with fun puzzles and a horse named Bob. 10/10 no notes.
why cant i start a FIRE
classic favorite. I left my game on overnight hense hourly play.
An absolute classic. Another one of those older games that really holds up well.
This game has two of the greatest (& most tragic) love stories of all time. #1 — Dirk Valentine and Frances Humber. #2 — Dave Gregory and me. </3
Great game, lots of fun puzzles in it, and it keeps you on your toes.
love the Nancy drew games. from for learn and fun
I love the classic nancy drew mysteries!! These are the best.
I love all the Nancy Drew games! I am an old school gal and have been playing her games for decades but with the newer computers it was getting harder to play some of them until I found steam!!
This is probably one of the hardest puzzle to solved (for me) but it was FUN!
While this game is an interesting one, this has to be one of the more frustrating titles of the series - like many of the older nancy drew games, this one doesn't hold your hand even in junior detective mode however this title takes it to new levels by just being down right unfriendly towards the player. Many aspects from looking for items, clues, general progression, and even exploration which should seem straight forward just plain aren't.
More often then not the phone icon is constantly lit up despite several times where the hints and even internet searches aren't relevant or have already been viewed. There's several times where dialogue from phone conversations to NPC conversations seems like it should happen sooner than it does (ie characters just suddenly learning something has happened when they had already discussed something previously with you with knowledge of it's occurrence), the journal and phone often won't update until after you leave an area which leads to a consistent back and forth repeatedly (I probably wasted a solid hour in just going back and forth), several of the puzzles are tricky and while this isn't an uncommon thing in nancy drew games the more frustrating aspect is that several of them are ridiculously finicky and touchy.
this game has the best music out of all the nancy's ive played and it has jokes that i actually laughed at. also tex is mad hot, MEOW.
biased rating:
dogs ≥ train ≥ HORSE > manor > wolf
fun point and click detective game.
If you like nancy drew youll like all her games.. so far one of my favs
One of the Nancy Drew games' classics this game takes you to Arizona, where you will do some sweet sweet ranch work, ride a horse, go to a ghost town and discover the decades old treasure hunt of love.
Even though it is one of the older games, you quickly forget about the graphics, because the puzzles and good story will keep you invested until the end.
A clear contender for one the best game in this series. Every core element of this one is pretty much flawless, while still being accessible to new players.
Highly questionable morality. Beware -- especially if you are a young person or are buying the game for a young person.
Contains mild spoilers:
The story-line for the mystery revolves around a romantic tragedy type of story wherein a man stole what accumulated to be a huge treasure from innocent people (they explicitly state this in the game). For his crimes, he was put to death by the law enforcement in the old West. Before he was put to death, he hid away all of the treasure for his love interest, who blames her father for his role in what happened (he was the sheriff -- so just doing his job) and calls him the "vilest man alive". And they make it out that the father feels deeply guilty about it even though he was doing his job in bringing a guilty man to justice. So all of this makes it out to be that the thief who stole from innocent people was an innocent victim and that it's romantic he hid this stolen wealth for his love interest (so the innocent victims never got their wealth back) and the sheriff who did his job in serving justice was the real criminal. Like, what? You can certainly make the argument that the death penalty for his crimes was excessive but I am still deeply uncomfortable with the romanticization of the situation and demonization of her father. I played this as a teenager and didn't realize how immoral that is but it is very obvious to me now and I'm honestly pretty appalled.
Aside from that, the actual game itself is fine. Has a cool baking and animal-feeding part where it teaches about measurements (ie how many teaspoons in a table spoon?). Which is practically useful and pretty fun to do in the game.
Игра детства через пятнадцать лет подарила столько же радости, сколько и при первом прохождении.
I loved this game as a kid. I came back as an adult for the recipes and fun and to actually finish this game. The recipes actually work-they are real-I love that about this game-you can make the recipes on the recipe cards! How cool is that? I had so much fun when I was in high school looking up this game and attempting the cake! It turned out delicious. I also love the gardening, the horses, the mystery, the fun puzzles. Granted there were parts that made me all scared! I still get scared easily and so I did not finish this game. I still am thankful for this game though. I suggest it to this day! It's worth the price too-you get a decent amount of gameplay in.
come on bob! i love this one.
"When there's a phantom horse/Riding round your ranch! Who you gonna call?"
Apparently not the police.
Great installment to the series, but the near-chronic anxiety of attempting to correctly identify ripe vegetables made me borderline manic.
This game conjures many positive childhood memories, and it is still so fun as an adult! Highly recommend for any Nancy Drew fan!
This is in my top three favorite ND games! Just love the whole vibe of the game and the storyline.
Game was alright, super tedious. A lot of remembering what not to do and to do. It's an old game, over 20 years old. I did enjoy the plot twist at the end and figuring out who is the bad guy. Other than tasks, I didn't like being kicked out because of the poor graphics. I had accidentally clicked the white hen 2 times when trying to leave the barn, the game ended and im like whhaat. Other thank all of that. 4/10 for me
Top 3 best Nancy Drew games.
Good characters and story but the horse and chores were repetitive.
One more quest solved. A little triggered game, it's more tired because of that, but interesting sure.
This is my favorite Nancy Drew game and such a comfort to me, <3
One of my favourite Nancy drew games! The story line is very interesting, I'm a horse girl so the horses make it even better!
fun game! runs well despite its age!
just a fun game and very easy going
it is a very fun and educational game!
This game sucks. I LOVE the Nancy Drew games, but this one is SO tedious. The daily tasks, the constant saddling and unsaddling of the horse, it's just too many repetitive actions. Not only that, but if you don't finish in one setting or take more than a day or two in between good luck figuring out where you left off with the puzzles and the clues.
One of my favorite Nancy drew games! The story, gameplay and puzzles kept me very entertained and were very straight forward. I didn't get stuck not knowing what to do in this game like I do in others. Highly recommend this one!
I would say this is my second all-time favorite Nancy Drew game from Her Interactive. The setting is just so magical and adventurous. Love the characters and the chores!
LISTEN, I love this game so much, but some of these puzzles WERE DRIVING ME NUTS. I felt like I was going crazy sometimes. anywhoooo, I love the characters and the story of this very much.
I love all Nancy Drew games but this is one of my favorites. The western feel of this game makes me feel more at home and like anything could happen.
All grown up now and this is still my favorite Nancy Drew Game!
The puzzles were neat but the characters were my favorite this time around! Not so much the culprit - I almost immediately hated them LOL. But if they catch you at the end game? 10/10 for the reference alone, creeepyyyy. The chores weren't too bad either. Overall a good one, I enjoyed it more than others I've played for sure, so I can see why it's one of the fan favorites!
I first saw this game being played on Smosh Games and it was the reason I decided to start playing the Nancy Drew games in release order. I'm glad I finally played the game that got me into Nancy Drew, it was awesome to play! I liked the many different locations to search around and the characters were really interesting. Probably one of my favorite games so far in the franchise.
One of the best ND games in the HER series! The puzzles are plentiful and fun, the chores that Nancy is tasked to complete are routine, but not boring, and exploring the desert on horseback is a great adventure. The story of fated lovers is sweet and tragic, and the search for hidden treasure makes it all the more intriguing!
The road runner mini-game is slow and the worst part of the game, but it's a small part of the big picture.
This one is a must play!
I liked the mystery, and I thought the puzzles were good.
TEX IS SO SCARY FIRST TIME I SAW HIM I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE AND GOT JUMPSCARED ALSO HE KICKED ME OFF THE RANCH BECAUSE I DIDNT TAKE THE SADLE OFF MY HORSE BUT I DIDNT KNOW YOU HAD TO :( i avoided talking to him as much as possible (this is objectively the best nancy drew game)
This is the first Nancy Drew game I've played. I used to the devour Nancy Drew books when I was younger (I'm pushing 40 now), so imagine my excitement when I discovered the existence of ND games. I'm not sure why I didn't learn of them before, especially since I consider myself a cozy gamer and these are 100% the type of game I like. Anyway, I don't have much of a basis for comparison, since this is my first ND title, but I'm enjoying the game so far! I had to rely on a walkthrough for some bits, but also solved some puzzles on my own. Go, me! I like the setting and also learning about horses.
My hot and gay wife has these games so now I'm going to play through the Nancy Drew series, as someone who missed out on the games as a child and also never read any of the books
THE SECRET OF SHADOW RANCH
Good lord, the games are just getting worse. Nothing is done right in this game. Despite the UI improvements this is the worst one so far. I'm just going to list awful things about this game until I run out of space.
- The To-Do list. I played on Senior difficulty. On this difficulty, Nancy says she doesn't need the to-do list. Are you kidding me. This is fake difficulty. Haha, if you wanted a fun game you should have picked the Junior difficulty, dumbass!
- Chores. I'm used to ND games starting with a round of chores for Nancy to do and sometimes it's fine. It helps you, the player, get accustomed to the game and learn the level layout and the characters. This game sucks about it. There are too many of them and instead of just doing them at the start, you have to do them at the beginning of all three in-game days. Meaningless filler.
- Speaking of chores... Nancy is a GUEST at Shadow Ranch. Why the ♥♥♥♥ is she being asked to do chores. These people have no sense of hospitality. You do not make your guests tend the farm for you.
- While we're on chores... collecting eggs. You always need six. Sometimes you go to collect and there literally aren't six there. You have to leave and come back and hope more appeared. Meanwhile Shorty acts like it's your fault you couldn't find more.
- Another chore... making the cake. It's already bad enough that you gotta suss out the ingredient ratios in a tedious and boring sequence. But then you have to choose a pan. There is no in-game hint that tells you which one. If you guess wrong, the cake won't cook right. Try again, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Oh, also, there is no indication how long to cook it for or at what heat. Chose wrong? Haha, you are bad at the game. You have to do this minigame again. Devs can kick rocks.
- Every single time you leave the ranch, you have to go through the process of saddling your horse, which first involves going to get the saddle, then putting it on the horse, tightening it, and then leaving. If you forget any of these things, you waste even more time. Then when you return, you have to remember to untighten the saddle, take it off, and return it to its hook in the stable. Otherwise it's a game over! This is boring and tedious. I do not care if it's realistic. Once I have demonstrated I know the proper procedure for riding, the game should not make me go through the steps again. You have to ride the horse many, MANY times in the game, even assuming you play optimally. I am here to solve a mystery, not to spend 25% of my time figuring out where to click before you let me go to another location.
- Using the lariat (the lasso). This involves just waiting until the lasso loop is a perfect circle. If you click at any other time you will miss your target, which means you have to wait for the animation to play and then try again. Sometimes when you click while the lasso is a perfect circle, it will change shape right when you click, and you will miss. The shortest I ever waited for the lasso to be a circle was probably six seconds. You have to use the lasso a minimum of four times *outside* the lasso tutorial. And since you will miss a lot, this is minutes of the game dedicated to trolling you.
- The slot machine. Oh boy, the slot machine. Like a real slot machine, it is ENTIRELY random whether you win or not. On your first use, you will have, at max, ONE coin to use. If you lose the slot machine, you have to ride your horse all the way back to Mary's and play all three levels of the arcade game again to get another one. The only way you will save your sanity is if you save right before playing and then just load your save if you lose. Even then, you could - like me - have to play NEARLY FORTY TIMES before you win and the game lets you continue. Imagine if you didn't save scum and had to make the several minute detour FORTY TIMES. The devs should have been fired and blacklisted from the industry. They clearly do not know how to make a game interesting, fun, or good, and they do not care about their product nor their customers.
- The plot is not as coocoo as the previous entry but it's still not believable. I'll buy Dirk's weird and stupid hints that are somehow still applicable 120 years later because that's just tropey video game stuff. What I won't buy is the culprit's plot. The culprit is trying to chase the Rawleys off their ranch in order to track down Dirk Valentine's treasure. First off, they can do that even if the Rawleys are there, nothing is stopping them. Second, the treasure isn't even on the Rawleys property, so what's the point. Third, no grown-ass adults are going to be scared by this Phantom Horse trick. I realize it's a kids game, and yeah, if KIDS saw a ghost horse they might be scared. But adults capable of running a ranch would not say "huh, this ghost horse showed up and then the water pipes burst! Must be haunted spirits and not sabotage. We don't have insurance because we're idiots. We should just sell the property instead of calling the police to investigate." Come on. In order for the culprit's plot to work, no one in the game can act like a rational human being.
- Also, the culprit is
Shorty
. This character has NO reason to be the culprit. No established motive. Just, you get to the end and, surprise, it's
Shorty
! We TRICKED you. You couldn't guess the culprit based on any in-game evidence, motive, means, or opportunity! We're SMART writers and this is a PLOT TWIST.
- I am getting tired of the stock puzzle where you have to change the word or set of symbols, but clicking on one letter/symbol changes multiple symbols and you have to figure out which symbols do what. I put up with it in earlier games because they had at max five symbols. This one has EIGHT.
- The magnet puzzle. If you back out of the puzzle five or six times, the cover over the maze disappears and you can just solve normally. The devs realized they had made a stupid puzzle and apologized for it IN GAME. ♥♥♥♥ you.
- Hope you like combing the desert for arrowheads. You need ten, which means the devs only put ten in the game, so once you have nine it is a pain to find that last one. Even better? Once you're done, it turns out you only needed nine, so Mary lets you keep one. Are you going to use that one? No. It just sits in your inventory. ♥♥♥♥ you.
- Every element of this game is designed to waste your time. Your playthrough will probably be around 5 hours but it would be 1 to 2 hours if you didn't have pointless filler. You gotta do all the chores. You gotta bake the cake. You gotta lasso the tree like eight times. You gotta play the slot machine a million times 'til you win. You gotta wait forty-five seconds every time you want to travel. You gotta click on every little rock on every screen if you want to find the arrowheads. You gotta throw bricks at the key until you magically intuit which power level and angle will be successful, just guess! That's fun. Trial and error is fun, right, kids?
OVERALL: 1/5
The only thing keeping this from being a 0/5 is that the game at least functions and wasn't made by literal neo-nazis. Otherwise the most infuriating and terrible entry. Worse than Stay Tuned For Danger, which only beats this one because its failure was charming. I was enjoying the ND games until the last stretch of three (Haunted Carousel, Deception Island, and this). I do not like how the devs are turning to complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to pad out their games. I hope they were all fired and replaced with competent creators so the next games can be fun. Don't waste your time on this garbage.
I used to have this game when I was a kid and CD-ROMs were still a thing; I can't believe I found it again, after so many years!! Why did I ever think this was a kids' game? The puzzles are difficult for 30-year old me lol but a ton of fun to solve! And though I wouldn't say the content is for kids with short attention spans, it IS family friendly!
Wild horses couldn't have dragged me away from this adventure! I am a big Nancy Drew fan, so this game wasn't my first rodeo, yet it still knocked my socks off! Out of all the games I've played so far this one is the most like an adventure, having you travel around all over the place. The characters are fun and the story is no horse opera. If you think you are too good for this game you need to get off your high horse and reconsider.
In my review of all the Nancy Drew games on Senior Detective mode I give this one a 3/10. I find this game so tedious and repetitive which is something I don't like. I didn't like the characters, the story or the puzzles. The only reason it gets a 3/10 is because it is still challenging with it's puzzles. I do not recommend this Nancy Drew game unless you are doing the entire series.
one of the best ND games.
This game in my opinion, is the BEST game to come out of the entire Nancy Drew series! It is so immersive and fun. It has everything from amazing puzzles like baking and a huge scavenger hunt, to horseback riding and vegetable picking (which I enjoy the chores Shorty gives you lol). The soundtrack in this game ranks very highly for me, it gives you that cheerful ranch feeling when you're at Shadow Ranch, and an ominous electric guitar sound when you're out exploring the ghost town alone. The culprit reveal is unexpected and creepy. Cannot recommend this game any higher. Favorite for many reasons. I constantly find myself replaying this game over and over ever since I was a kid and it first came out, all the way to today.
it is fun to see who is sabatogeing the ranch
Secret of Shadow Ranch is a fun entry in the Nancy Drew game franchise. Although it has some of the weakest puzzles in the series in terms of complexity, the story is interesting enough. I would recommend this as a first entry to those looking to get into the series.
This is the best nancy drew game to ever exist. I will not be accepting differing opinions.
Best dating sim
Absolutely love it. Very informative, concise, and helpful
Just an absolute classic. This is one of the first ND games I ever played and it's still as much fun today as it was then. Ghost towns, fun characters, wild west forbidden love stories, and getting to traipse around the desert on horseback? Count me in. An oldie, but a goodie.
And when picking vegetables... it's better to take too many. You can always apologize later xD
I just love Nancy Drew games, they have such a soothing effect on me. I've played them all at least 5 times each. I wait long enough untill I forget the details and then play them again. Desperate measures, since no new games are expected :(
I'm playing my way through all of the ND games, and I suspect most people reading this review are too, regardless of reviews! But here are my thoughts anyway.
I had saved this one for second-to-last on my list, as the book version is probably the one I remember the best out of all titles! I was really enjoying it up until the end, where there were some tedious puzzles that somewhat tainted the experience for me (looking at you, maze and magnet puzzles). however, the thematic setting is really good, and I enjoyed the characters/puzzles and research to do beforehand! it's definitely heavy on the back-and-forthing, and having to prepare the horse every time you want to leave/return gets reaaallly tedious after a while. I think the game would've been just fine with removing some of the repetitive chores you need to do, but alas. anyways, it's still definitely worth playing, and enjoyable overall!
nostalgic
Nancy Drew games will always hold a special place in my heart since these were one of the first games my dad introduced to me. I have a lot of fond memories of getting off school and sitting down to play with him (we always had to look up cheats whenever the puzzles were too hard, haha).
I've always been drawn to games with Western themes, so The Secret of Shadow Ranch is definitely one of my favorites. The music is always a highlight in each game, I would just sit there for a bit listening and enjoying the cheery tunes.
For those who haven't played a Nancy Drew game before, I think this is a great one to start off with!
Awesome and very wholesome game i really like the story of the game and the characters are very well put together 10/10...
Very Liminal and nostalgic. Especially if you were a horse girl
it was good.
Пройдено. 4/5 из-за овощей и толстозадого повара
A Nancy Drew classic! 10/10
I have very fond memories of this one growing up. I enjoyed a lot of the puzzles, though I will admit that in Senior Detective mode it was significantly harder to figure out many of the next steps once I got stuck. That said, it was a fun one that didn't have too many dumb non-puzzle rules to follow, with the exception of the saddle that ended the game if you forgot about it. It's a pain to keep having to deal with the saddle every time you want to go out riding. Overall though, the game came together very well, and this one remains one of my favorites in the series. 7/10.
This is one of my favorite nancy drew games ever!
This is as good as I remember when I was a kid! One of my favorite Nancy games for sure. Some of the actions/ features are outdated and a bit cumbersome compared to some of the newer games but honestly this one is still worth playing because it is just so fun!
Nancy's investigating again. This time she's at a ranch where a glowing horse has been spotted just before acts of sabotage occur. Could it have anything to do with story of a long-ago bank robber and the gold he hid? And is someone hiding out in the old ghost town?
Standard entry in the series. Point-and-click, linear mystery, nice assortment of puzzles that tie in to the setting. Characters in this one are a bit bland compared to some of the other entries. Like most of this series, it's probably 10-15 hours gameplay on first go-through (assuming you don't use a walk-through), and half of that on replay.
I legit own more Nancy Drew games than any other, theyre the best and I love them so much.
YEEHAW
Ehh. This one has a bunch of really annoying puzzles that got on my nerves. Id only recomend to big fans of the series and even then I'd pick up other titles before this. Universal Hint Simulator is recommended for the really bothersome puzzles.
That being said, this title does have a really cool setting and good characters.
Great game. Good puzzles and treasure hunt. Been a while since I read the book; I may read it again.
If you like anything remotely close to cowboys or the southwest, you will absolutely love this game. The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard come from a Nancy Drew game, I go back and listen to it often. The map is so expansive, the setting seems like miles and miles around, riding your horse and exploring the desert is a wonderful way to pass the time. Everyone you meet or read about is so interesting and likable that you don't want anyone to be the villain.
This game definitely needs a notebook and a little bit of drawing skills, but its absolutely worth it.
This game is one of the first I can remember playing. I love the ranch theme and found the puzzles to be quite fun. In my opinion this is one of the better Nancy Drew games.
one of the few i didn't play as an actual child and its still just as fun, weird and challenging for a 30yo. i will never stop mourning the discontinuation of this series, it doesn't get much better than this
