I have almost all of the Nancy games through steam, but I won't be purchasing anymore through here. At one point or another all the games functioned as they should, then steam did an update a while ago and now most of the games I have I can not play, some games just won't simply load or give me an error when they do. I have spent hours and days looking online to try and solve the issues I'm having, to no avail. I'm not sure if others are also having this issue as most of the time others are able to resolve it. So it's not that I'm not recommending the Nancy games. I am simply not recommending purchasing them here on steam from my experience. All the Nancy games are fun, exciting and fulfilling.

this was a fun game to learn how the Nancy Drew pc adventure games played. I quickly learned to either write notes from all the books for later puzzles(or just use my phone's camera). Like most point and click adventure games I found that when I got stuck, it was almost always becuase of some tiny area I didn't realize was interactive.

An entertaining mystery that is exactly as long as it needs to be. A few dropped threads and one puzzle I needed to look up a hint for, but otherwise a very solvable and fun Nancy game.

This was the first Nancy Drew game I ever played, about 2 decades ago. After playing some of the newer games, the movement isn't as smooth - but that's to be expected from the third game in the series. Still a very enjoyable mystery game even after all these years!

A classic! In terms of ease, it definitely requires you to use your brain (and a notepad, or maybe even your phone camera). Give it a good 3-4 hours and make sure to be diligent looking around. You won't regret it.

Message in a Haunted Mansion is the third Nancy Drew adventure game. In this game, Nancy goes to help a family friend uncover the reason for the strange accidents and ghostly occurences that have been plaguing her bed-and-breakfast.

The mystery in this game was pretty simple, but I enjoyed it. The suspects were all pretty strong and I wasn't absolutely sure who the culprit was until pretty close to the end of the game. The puzzles were pretty enjoyable. There were a couple that were tricky or not very clear, but they were mostly straightforward and just difficult enough to be enjoyable. One of the first puzzles you do was very annoying. The controls are not very precise but you need to put the pieces in precise places to solve it, and the differences between the pieces are very subtle. There were also one or two places where you had to redo a long puzzle if you had to go back and check something, which was a little tedious.

I enjoyed the aesthetic of the house and the spooky vibes. The ghost activity was more subtle than in some of the other games with "supernatural" mysteries, but it still made me jump a couple of times. The "scary" cutscenes weren't particularly impressive, but the ghost noises, moving shadows, and other smaller ghost phenomena made a subtly spooky atmosphere I really enjoyed.

Of the early games, this was the one that showed its age the most for me. The animation and 3D characters are not very good looking, especially in the cutscenes. A number of the papers you find are written in spidery cursive that was very thin and hard to read blown up on a large monitor. The controls almost aren't precise enough for one of the early puzzles. Navigating around the mansion was a little weird. There are directional arrows to go back but to go forward, the cursor looks the same as it does when there's a hotspot.

Overall, Message in a Haunted Mansion was pretty middle of the road for me. I liked the old San Francisco but subtly spooky vibes in the mansion. The story and puzzles were both good but didn't stand out from the other games. The technical issues were annoying but didn't make the game unplayable. 6/10

Not recommended due to the following:
* incredibly clunky navigation
* that one puzzle that requires pixel perfect placement of multiple items but never states that explicitly and it is easy to assume (as I initially did) that the patterns on the items need to be lined up instead
*occasional "think fast or it's game over" moments, somewhat ameliorated by the second chance feature
* at least one instance where a completely unintuitive action must be taken to progress the storyline
* occasional disconnect between the player and Nancy as the discoveries made by the player are not always immediately reflected in the dialogue options
* an abrupt ending that fails to tie up all the narrative threads and honestly, kind of makes Nancy look dumb

Im going to be biased because of nostalgia, however this game was another one that I played in my childhood. And I LOVE IT. It's spooky and the music is so good someone even put it on spotify and i listen to it obsessively. This one made me constantly switch back and forth between two people on who was the suspect, and the way you catch them is HILARIOUS because in reality that person would definitely be a goner, but nancy gets hit on the head and wakes up fine in over half of these games so physical inaccuracies are part of the charm of it all I suppose lol.

This game had actual history and facts wrapped into it as well which I enjoy and appreciate! I love reading in this game(its my favorite part) and a lot of the stuff was pretty accurate. I won't spoil anything but the way you find whats causing all the ghosts in the house is cool too.

All in all a nice and cozy game that lets you take your time figuring stuff out. the only thing I didnt like was the very ending with the safe combination because it expects you to remember EVERY character you come across AND what sequence to put them in, which unless you were taking note of every little thing(which I do thankfully) you wouldn't correlate it or at least not the sequence. Thankfully there ARE walkthroughs out there and I dont think they diminish the gameplay at all so just look up anything if you get stuck, I had to do it a couple times myself. if you want to figure it out on your own though, it gets frustrating but is WORTH IT when you figure it out.

An excellent game of mystery and intrigue that I'd recommend to players of ages 10 and up! The puzzles can stump you, but they don't feel impossible. Voice acting is great, and so is the story! Every character seems to have their own motive; it's hard to discern what or who is behind the mystery!

I wish that these games would get a remaster!

Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion is an environmental puzzle game where you need to solve the mystery of a haunted house where mysterious accidents occur.

Overall, the game isn't very difficult, though you may need to write a few clues down; but I didn't spend too much time wandering around trying to figure out what to do. There's an in-game help system that'll point you in right direction, should you get stuck.

Given this game was released 25 years ago, there is definitely some jankiness involved as it pertains to moving around and interacting with the environment. The cursor changes over hotspots, but there's no distinction between the movement and interaction icons, so that takes a little getting used to. Many of the in-game documents are muddy and difficult to read; that doesn't really affect the puzzle-solving, but does make some of the in-game lore a little harder to parse through.

Overall, this is a decent game, though $9.99 is quite a high price for a 25 year old game. I'd definitely wait for a sale or a bundle before purchasing; there isn't a ton of game here.

Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion is a quick spooky play through. The puzzles in this game are a lot of fun and the mansion has several nooks and crannies to discover and explore! Each frame and scene has the charm of the older Nancy Drew games: rich in colors and designs. There is no journal feature in this game, and it makes it hard to keep track of what Nancy should be doing at any given point. It's not always clear where Nancy should go next, but a quick call to Bess and George for a hint will send you in the right direction. The hints are straight forward and give you everything but the answer.

The soundtrack sets a spooky atmosphere, as well as the various apparitions and shadows that wander the hallways. I wish the phone calls had the distorted filter to the voices to make it feel like it's an actual phone call, but I know most of the other games have this little detail.

Come prepared with a pen and paper of your own to take lots of notes as there are plenty of symbols and passwords that Nancy will need to remember!

Despite it's age, outdated graphics and worse controls compared to newer ND games, it's definately worth playing. Scenary looks OK on laptop screen (only characters models and animations are truly giving up the game's age) being very atmospehric with good scare factor, music is awesome and the story is good. A small amount of puzzles and the absence of checklist and typical notebook the difference between Junior detective and Senior one is minor.

I am somewhat neutral on this game, but I'll rate it a "Yes" over a "No".

Downsides:
-It's pretty low rez, so some of the "old handwritten notes" you find are extremely difficult to read now
-The navigation is pretty bad. I realize this game is almost 25 years old but it can't have been great then either. You are not consistently given arrow symbols to move around - sometimes when you think the magnifying glass has something to examine, it will move Nancy forward instead. You just have to memorize where it moves her and where it has something to look at.

Upsides:
-SUPER short. Like you can do this one in an evening, no problem
-Puzzles were pretty good. Only gripe is the tile puzzle, which was quite finicky, but otherwise I liked them
-Haunted house events were kinda cute
-Even if you can't read the "old handwritten notes" it's not that hard to piece together the general lore

It's alright. there are better games in the series, surely. It's not scary, since they kill the mystery pretty much in the beginning. There are little to no puzzles at all, plot is simple and suspect is quite predictable. It was fun either way, if you want a quick game for a night - go for it.

I absolutely adore the theming of this one! The atmosphere is great and there's lots of spooky things happening that really builds up the premise of the game. I love the design of the cast too. Everyone has unique personalities and ideas that bring so much life to the game. I really enjoy how all of the puzzle are connected together and how cohesive the story is. As one of the oldest Nancy Drew games, it's a bit on the shorter side (it only takes around 2.5 hours to finish) and is missing some quality of life features like a task list, but the game provides great hints when you call Bess and George if you need some help. Overall, it's a really solid experience for a game that's one of the oldest in the series.

Not my favorite from the ND games I've played since it felt fairly short and the dialogue and voice acting felt a bit limited, but also not ashamed to admit that it was immersive enough to scare me more than I thought it would! It was also a fun way to learn about San Francisco history and draw Chinese characters, learn the zodiac order, etc. Some of the puzzles and conversations were confusing and easy to get lost in, especially with the journal being locked in her suitcase and not having the usual checklist available - but it was fun to use an IRL notebook to keep track of things! Still a must-play in my book.

Love going back to the originals. While it takes some mental "mapping" with early Drew games to get the right point&click motions, you find yourself back where you were years ago. Dial up tones, cut off by a parent's phone call coming in, wait again for the long download times (thanks Steam! We've overcome!) and yes. In Nancy's prologue, postcards and all. Beginning in her Chinese cultural room, we find the theme and puzzle elements that set the tone for the game. Once you get used to the map, game flows nicely. I used George and Bess for some clues but as a long time Nancy Drew player I was happy to go back to this one and find it to be just as I remembered, Thank you for the nostalgia bomb, Nancy. The newer games might have more flow, but the vibes that fostered your inception remain forever untouched, Love yall "check! That's done!"

This is the second Nancy Drew I’ve played, the other being Treasure in the Royal Tower, and I have to say that I preferred this one. I think it’s because the environment is smaller and less confusing to navigate. Don’t get me wrong: navigation is absolutely atrocious, but at least it’s quicker in this one.

I liked the story and characters. It was a beautiful environment and packed with detail. Lots of clever ideas and fun secrets to discover. I liked the puzzles for the most part too.

Things I didn’t much care for: cursive notes that border on unreadable. Microscopic text. That damn alarm. Monotonous clicking around and around the house.

I also feel like this one is over-priced at $9.99. It’s beyond ‘long in the tooth.’ Something like $3.99 would make more sense to me. Then again they’re probably assuming most will buy it on sale, and I’m sure steam takes a healthy cut.

Still, I’m glad I played it and my Nancy Drew marathon shall continue.

Growing up with the Nancy Drew series (both the books and the games), this game has always remained my absolute favorite. Even now as an adult, I still find myself both intrigued and terrified of this game--despite the "scary" parts clearly showing their age. There's just something so incredibly charming (and sometimes a little silly) about these older Nancy Drew games that I just adore, whether that be the voice acting, the scary parts that are equally just-as silly, or the unnatural way the character models move.

Of all the Nancy Drew games, I strongly feel like this is the one that defines the series as a whole. The music, the story, the setting, the characters, and all the small details really make it an incredible game. The puzzles are interesting and unique, and I feel like I can easily connect the dots with all the mystery aspects. Some Nancy Drew games I find myself hitting numerous dead-ends and eventually resorting to a guide, wondering "how was I supposed to figure that out on my own?" Maybe that's just a skill issue on my part, but I dunno. I personally don't feel like that with this game, and it's refreshing. Whether you're new to this series or you're wanting to jump back into it, this game in particular is a must-have!

Loved the game all the way through, only felt that it was too short compared with other games. Fun characters and gorgeous setting. Pretty intuitive navigation for an earlier game in the series. Did almost rage quit on the first puzzle with the wood inlay though. Despite other reviews, the puzzle is not bugged or broken, you just have to be realllly precise about where each piece goes and its orientation (all "wood lines" must match, etc.). I played on the Steam Deck and had to turn trackpad sensitivity all the way down to finish it. Luckily none of the puzzles after that are so incredibly technically aggravating and I do think the game is worth getting through it.

Pros:
- Loved the atmosphere: San Francisco, Victorian Painted Ladies, Gold Rush
- Interesting story
- Some interesting puzzles
- I am actually glad that it is not too scary (not a fan of horror)

Cons:
- Too short (finished in about 4.5 hours)
- Sometimes difficult to understand what the next puzzle is
- Too few puzzles and some are too easy. More point & click, read & talk style of game than puzzles

Overall I enjoyed this game but there are better Nancy Drew games.

Message in a Haunted Mansion is truly a classic. While I would not call it SCARY it does have some genuinely unsettling moments. It is obviously very dated, but I think that adds to the charm and unsettling nature of the whole thing LOL. They fixed some of the issues with the controls that were present in the previous game, but I can't say they were completely fixed. Good characters, good puzzles despite there not being too many of them, and I enjoyed the story as well. I recommend it as the oldest ND game on steam!!

i recently decided to buy this game on steam(can't play my cd disc version on my new laptop) and so glad it's compatible with windows 11 .
but getting back to the plot/game play review. Despite it's old graphics, i still had fun playing it. It's a short fun nd game to play when you want to do speedruns. someone new to Nancy drew games, should try less old games first before trying this one though since it's oldness might not be the best for new gamers to these type of games.

I remember this was the only Nancy Drew game I had growing up and I was too afraid of it to get past the first few minutes of game play. I'm happy I remembered the name and was able to finally play it as an adult. I used quite a lot of clues from Bess but it was really fun to figure out the mystery. I understand why it scared me as a child but I laughed at the "scary parts" as an adult.

This is one of the earliest Nancy Drew games, but it still holds up well: fun puzzles, a good lineup of characters/suspects, and an excellent haunted house experience (I still jump at the strange sights and sounds that occur throughout the game!). For the most part, it ran very smoothly on my laptop, but the game did abruptly shut down once without warning -- I recommend saving the game regularly as you play, just in case that happens to you.

TRY THE DEMOS! there are several nancy drew titles with demos, try those out to see if they will work for you.

i couldn't get this to display/run on my laptop, and i returned it for a refund. however, i have since read that it works if you change your display settings to 100%. i had a demo that worked on my desktop pc, but not the laptop. UNTIL i set the display to 100%

also check the discussion for how to use the compatibility troubleshooter on the game file. running as administrator, and setting it to use windows xp (3) may help.

My hot and gay wife has these games so now I'm going to play through the Nancy Drew series, as someone who missed out on the games as a child and also never read any of the books

MESSAGE IN A HAUNTED MANSION
The Good:
- Puzzles are logical, meaning if you have enough information you will arrive at the correct answer always. (They aren't necessarily *integrated* but that's just a feature of 90s point-and-click games.)
- A few puzzles in particular really reward you for paying attention and applying your knowledge of the mansion. I'm thinking specifically of the moment where
you spy on Louis from the secret passage
but there are others. A close second is the moment
where I realized what the tapestry in your room was for after looking at it all game
- There's a puzzle at the end of the game which you need a *lot* of clues to solve. However, if you've only found about 70-80% of the clues you can still deduce the answer without any real brute forcing or having to go on a pixel hunt. Well, that's what I did.
- There are two puzzles that involve real-world knowledge (
I'm thinking of the piano puzzle and the Chinese characters puzzle
) and both are not only accurate enough to how those things work in real life but also don't require you to have extensive knowledge on the subjects to solve.
- Like its predecessor "Stay Tuned For Danger," this game runs on an internal clock. But unlike the predecessor, you have a means of advancing to any time you like (on the hour). This prevents the type of situation in the previous game where, if you do things in the wrong order, you have to wait for 45 real minutes. There is one point that is very time sensitive and might require about a minute of waiting if you get to the right location quick enough. Otherwise you are never barred from doing what you need to do.
- Good atmosphere. I never found it genuinely spooky, but everything hangs together in a pleasing way.
- Unlike the two games before this one, where there were so many red herrings and extraneous information that it was difficult to know what you were supposed to be retaining, ALL the puzzle elements and background information you find will prove useful to you in one way or another. You are rewarded for everything you notice and can be sure that if you don't know what that thing is for right now, it *will* have a purpose later, so you should remember it.

The Bad:
- The interface and gameplay loop are very dated and it can be difficult to know where you are able to click, and what will happen when you do. There is no visual difference between your magnifying glass getting a red border because that's a location you can move to or it's an object you can interact with. But at worst, it's just a minor annoyance.
- The floor puzzle is notorious for being buggy and precise. I was lucky in that there were no bugs but it was still overly finicky and requires pixel perfect precision. It is the first puzzle in the game, you are told about it, and the solution is very easy to know. It's just getting the game to understand that you've done it properly that really sucks.

The Weird:
- We still have bad 90s 3d graphics, but there's a sort of charm to it. (I'm not knocking a small indie studio making kids' games in the late 90s and early 2000s for bad 90s graphics.)
- This is the first game where Nancy Drew no longer sounds like Rocky the Flying Squirrel, but she still sounds waaaaay older than high school. Even funnier is that, at one point, you have to call someone named Emily who is supposed to be older but sounds like a 24-year-old doing an old woman voice.
- The voice acting is pretty stilted, even for the time and genre. Most of it I can handle, but the guy playing Louis sounds like they literally woke him up two seconds ago to read his lines. There's also
The Seance
, with a character who is supposed to sound spooky but sounds like a line reading from a gay man who has better things to do than talk to you. Instead of ruining the game, this just makes it very very funny.

OVERALL: 3/5 (it's great)
I'm only three games in, but this one is easily the best so far. Feels like HeR Interactive finally found their groove. The dated gameplay can make things difficult for all the wrong reasons but otherwise it's a classic point-and-click puzzler with plenty of "aha" moments to reward inquisitive players. It's on the easy side, but that might be because the puzzles are good and don't use moon logic, meaning you stand a chance of solving them with just your wits and not a walkthrough (Stay Tuned For Danger can go to hell). If you're looking to get started on the Nancy Drew games, I'd recommend skipping the first two and jumping into this one.

A really nice and straightforward Nancy Drew game! I think around this game they kind of found their groove in how to nicely blend the story and puzzles together with some nice environmental storytelling as well. I would even go as to say that this is probably the best beginner Nancy Drew game to start with. Just be sure to have a notebook handy to write down all the clues you find.

In my review of all the Nancy Drew games on Senior Detective mode I give this one a 6/10. I think this is a great game if you are new to Nancy Drew. I like the story line and think it has great puzzles. I think the design is beautiful and I like the characters. I will say I hate the maze game you have to play to unlock the laptop because it gives me such bad motion sickness. It is also one of those game where you have to make sure to talk to everyone, look at every little thing before the story line can progress which is annoying.

This particular Nancy Drew game is core nostalgia for some players. Message in a Haunted Mansion is the first in the series to truly cover secret compartments, physical puzzles, and a good ghostly spook. What HeR interactive accomplished with this game had a strong impact on all that succeeded it, and made Nancy Drew games what they are today.

This likely is the shortest of all Nancy Drew games that I've played (23/33 completed to date). On average, I would say that the newer games take about 8-14 hours to finish. While this one took me 4hrs.
