This is by far the most messed up game I've ever played and I could not recommend it enough. Left me stating at the wall reconsidering every life choice I had ever made. 12/10 for mental ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Masochisia is not a game that tries to entertain in the conventional sense, and it makes that clear almost immediately. Developed and published by Oldblood, it presents itself as an experimental psychological horror experience, but even that label feels insufficient. It is closer to an interactive descent into a fractured mind, one that places the player in an uncomfortably intimate position with its protagonist. Rather than relying on external threats or traditional horror structures, it builds its impact through subject matter, tone, and the unsettling feeling of being complicit in what unfolds.
The narrative follows Hamilton, a young man growing up in a deeply dysfunctional and abusive household. From the beginning, the game establishes an environment defined by instability—an oppressive father, a fragile and erratic mother, and a family dynamic that feels irreparably broken. Even though I play a lot of AAA games (sometimes paying too much for them - though I've weened myself off that particular habit), I also do my best to seek out smaller games that are a bit different. Since I'm also a fan of the horror genre, Masochisia peaked my interest. As such, this is the only game, thus far, released by Jon Oldblood, a developer out of Texas who created the game on his own, not really expecting many people to play it. I see why - Masochisia is a very unsettling game, full of disturbing images, dark themes and based on a very real (and very evil) person. Yet it expects you to somewhat empathize, with a faint glimmer of hope, but never letting you escape the horror. It's not super popular on Steam, but I found it to be a truly memorable game - even if it left me a bit shaken.
Presentation: The game has an excellent design - and by that I mean it's creepy as hell. The characters are very much cartoons, but seem to be based on early Americana paintings. The design is the first disturbing thing you notice - all the eyes are hollow, the various artwork scattered around the game features portraits with no eyes - just black, endless voids. Likewise, the music is suitably dark and sinister. There are a few jump scares that, while cheap, are still effective and though the game isn't fully voiced at all, there are a few instances of vocals that are truly well done and just makes your hair stand on end. The look of the game perfectly matches up to its story and once you see it, it will forever stay with you.
Story: So, so very dark and uncomfortable. The games starts off with a warning about people who suffer from depression or mental illness to maybe skip this one - and though you may think it's kind of facetious, it's actually pretty accurate. You play as Hamilton a teen/young man who is trapped in a hopeless situation - his alcoholic father beats him, his brother and his mother. His mother has her own issues, as she goes from doting and kind to hellish and screaming at the drop of a pin and also suffers from hallucinations. Speaking of his brother, he is kept locked in his room in a straight jacket and Hannibal Lector-like mask, because, you see, is a super masochist, who enjoys the beatings he receives while thinking of novel ways to self-mutilate himself. As if this wasn't enough, he soon meets another boy, Walter, who introduces him to an angel, Michael, who can see the future. Michael looks an awful lot like a demon, and he instructs Hamilton to do terrible things. The only one who seems to provide any hope of escape is a faceless girl named Grace who never speaks, but expresses emotions in his mind. Hamilton is stuck between trying to change the person he is predestined to become, only to face situations he cannot seem to control - and you must decide whether to embrace his madness or fight in seeming futility against it.
Things take an even darker turn if you dig a little to realize the story is based (partially) on the life of real-life serial killer Albert Fish, with several elements (including some of his real-life victims) taken in to account. Believe me, though, as dark as this experience can get, it's nothing compared to what Fish really did. If you choose to try to chance the outcome, the game ends - but not in the way you think it will, providing one last little twist. Oldblood also scatters ciphers throughout the game, giving more insight into Fish for those who choose to dig deeper. Finally, he also provides one, last creepy surprise in the form of txt files that show up on your desktop (or folder depending on your operating system). Supposedly he wanted to go even further with messing with your computer (and your mind) but ultimately decided it was too invasive and dropped it. Still, kudos for going through with such a devastating story.
Gameplay: A simple adventure game setup. You move from place to place simply by clicking on the edges of the screen. Likewise, you talk to the various characters by clicking on them, choose dialogue by clicking on the choices and pick up a few items by clicking on them. You can select items to use them, thought it doesn't often come into play. There are a few simple puzzles to solve as well. The game is short - I completed it in just over an hour, but don't worry, it has plenty of impact. It's pretty standard and not very exciting, but this is not the game's strength - it's the story and atmosphere that stand out.
Replayability: The "good" ending is such a twisted experience, I can't imagine at this time wanting to go back to get the "bad" ending (that is, giving in to your supposed destiny). That being said, if you want to know the full story, or solve some of the numerous ciphers, you could go back for another go.

It absolutely pushes you into some of the darkest corners of the human psyche and then forces you to sit there, uncomfortably, with no hand holding and no easy way out. In that sense, it succeeds as a piece of psychological horror more than most games ever could.
That being said, it does feel like it overstays its welcome just a bit. The experience is so heavy, so oppressive, and so emotionally draining that by the end, I was more relieved than satisfied just because I was getting a bit bored. I’m glad it ended when it did not because it was bad, but because it’s the kind of game that demands an emotional limit.
Mechanically, there isn’t much to sink your teeth into gameplaywise and the narrative, while thematically powerful, doesn’t always feel as compelling or cohesive from start to finish as the horror surrounding it does.
Still, it’s impossible to deny what this game achieves. It’s not “enjoyable” in a traditional sense, but it is affecting and that matters. Masochisia isn’t a game you play for fun. It’s a game you experience, process, and carry with you.

Головним героєм гри є Гамільтон - дитина, яка виросла в атмосфері психологічного та фізичного насилля, [spoiler]а зазнавши поразки у боротьбі зі своїми внутрішніми демонами і сама поступово стала монстром. В голові хлопця лунають різні голоси, які розмовляють з ним і всяко впливають на нього (тим самим вливаючи і на гравця, тримаючи у постійній напрузі). У нього галюцинації і панічні атаки, які часто супроводжуються скрімерами і зникають від самопошкодження чи препаратів.[/spoiler] Психічно хворі батьки ж не викликають нічого, крім негативу, жалості і щирого побажання їм усього найгіршого, а брат... я просто хочу забути цього персонажа.
Гра коротка, але дуже атмосферна і моторошна.
[spoiler]Вона запихає тебе у шкіру маніяка. Показує його життєві обставини, думки, почуття і ЗМУШУЄ прийняти той факт, що тут від тебе майже нічого не залежить. Шизофренія героя прогресує з кожною хвилиною, а розробники ламають четверту стіну і розмивають кордони між гравцем і героєм.[/spoiler] Все, що робиться руками Гамільтона - робиться руками гравця, який не може чинити опір цьому і вплинути на щось. [spoiler]Сцена жорстокого вбивства дитини з покроковим розчленуванням - це апогей цієї гри. Це момент, який точно ніколи не забудеться, бо руками Гамільтона усе це робить саме гравець. Гра дає ілюзію вибору; ілюзію, що весь цей жах можна зупинити, но такий варіант завжди буде недоступним для вибору. Доведеться вибирати те, що не хочеться (чи хочеться?), або вийти з гри, видалити її і забути як страшний сон, хоча б таким чином врятувавши дитину (не від Гамільтона, але від себе). [/spoiler]
Гамільтон залишає на робочому столі текстові файли, в яких розмовляє особисто з тобою (тим, хто грає у цю гру). А також звинувачує у тому, що ти, гравець, без зайвих роздумів готовий убити, якщо смерть здається заслуженою. Що ти насолоджуєшся усім що відбувається, просто не хочеш цього визнавати. Гамільтон обіцяє наглядати за тобою, бо знає "на що ти здатний".

I don’t usually write reviews, but this game really pissed me off. The game is completely broken for me and won’t start. I tried to get support in the discussion section, and I received no response from the Dev.
When I click Play, the game never starts, but my entire computer stutters very bad including audio, mouse, everything. The game never appears on screen, there’s no icon in the taskbar, nothing. I have to click Stop in Steam to end it, and then everything immediately goes back to normal. I tried again today and the exact same thing happened.
I also tried playing on Steam Deck. The game finally launches there, but it clearly isn’t fully compatible. The screen is zoomed in and partially cut off, and the controls don’t work properly.
Clearly, other people have got this game working, but I can’t, and the damn Dev has said nothing. I really wanted to play this but I can't. I hope I can get a refund.
I don't normally write bad reviews for bad games, I simply ignore them. In this case I feel I am honor bound to say something about it. First of all this is NOT a game. I'm not sure what it is, but there is zero game play. Assuming it was supposed to be a 'horror story' brings me to my second point. This as nothing but a bunch of contrived nonsense. It's neither scary or anything else. Basically it is just a waste of money and time. If you want to literally point and click for 5-6 hours to mercifully reach the end then by no means let me put you off buying it, much less playing it. I'm going to do the only thing left to do which is uninstall it and avoid any future encounters with Oldblood efforts. I only paid $2.79 for it but even that was way too much.

It's short - but even still, I couldn't finish it. The character art is great - definitely a highlight and the music is spooky, but the dialogue is predictable and tired, and there isn't anything to do... you just go from one place to another over and over and talk to people and use items when you're told to do so. Not really a game, so disappointed.
I didnt care for it. Movement was confusing. I didnt care for the art, it was just ugly in more ways then one...then i read that my picking up a couple items early would break the game, and that was that.

It's a nice artwork, but I can't really count it as a game. There's really only one riddle appearing in this whole "game", the story is finished after 3 hours (I've wasted a bit more time with trying out unnecessary things) and it would have disappointed me even more if I would have paid the full price for it. So if you wish to pay for a short story-time, go ahead! But if you are looking for a game, then better check for something else. The fact that the confusing game-bug is still not removed yet counts to me as another minus point.

This is my favourite game of all time that I have ever played. The playthrough is not extremely long, however I have played this over 5 times at this point. Despite the story remaining the same every time it still gets me and I still love it every time. I wish the developer of this game would do more of these games, the graphics, the story telling everything is perfect for me. Even if you know the real life story of [spoiler] Albert Fish [/spoiler] you will still not be spoiled by this game. [spoiler] the killing of Billy is an amazing rendering, and Grace is so beautiful in her own way in this game [/spoiler] that I can't ever be disappointed.

One of the worst attempts at an edgy game I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing. Despite the incredibly dark story, this game was too dull to care about. Characters are painfully bland and the dialogue is the most cliche, predictable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you could think to write. Maybe I shouldn't judge since I couldn't even bother to complete it, but I was losing my sanity as I slogged through every awful line of cringe inducing text. It got to the point where I was just clicking to skip everything, at which point I came to terms with having zero reason to continue. Thankfully, I managed to set myself free from this game-equivalent of attending a timeshare presentation because watching paint dry or maybe even grass grow might be more entertaining. I went in knowing nothing about this game, except that it was supposed to be highly disturbing. Somehow, I'm only disturbed knowing that people actually enjoyed playing this. On a positive note, the music and sound effects gave very nice and immersive vibe at times.
An actually good psychological horror game. I’m not easily squeamish, but some parts genuinely made me uncomfortable, which is a strong point for a game of this type.
Warning: Please take the content warnings seriously. The game deals with mental illness, psychosis, child abuse, child murder, graphic gore, themes of unreality, loss of free will, and religious trauma.
Edit: I initially didn’t pay much attention to the “based on a real story” tagline, but I’ve since realized this game is truly based on real events, not just using that as a marketing tool, but actually depicting a real-life serial child killer from the 1920s. It even uses the real names and likenesses of two of his victims.
This revelation lowers my rating a bit because I don’t think the game handles the subject matter with enough sensitivity. While I appreciate the gore and unsettling nature from a media perspective, involving real victims makes it feel somewhat in poor taste.
That said, the game is well-crafted, and I still recommend it but if you think playing something based on such tragic real events might cause you moral discomfort, it might be best to skip this one.
E um jogo bem curto, e ao que parece, possui um final único. Os gráficos são bonitos e originais, point-in-click e diálogo. Não vale a pena comprar pelo valor integral, mas sim com uma promoção pelo menos de 30%, pois é muito simples e curto. Um ponto que é bom para mim, pois uso isso para estudar e praticar, é não estar no idioma português. As músicas são boas e legais e o final foi bom mas não conclusivo, e não gosto tanto assim. Gosto também de que ele brinca com o seu notebook, te enviando cartas. É beeem subentendido o jogo se basear no serial killer Albert Fish, mas tem coisas bem fortes no jogo.

L'histoire est intéressante et j'étais assez pressé de comprendre la fin. Eh bien celle-ci (sans spoiler) se termine brutalement et en même temps étrangement.
Un jeu que je ne conseille pas à tout le monde car pour moi déjà ce n'est pas un jeu mais plutôt une histoire qui est racontée, mais aussi car elle parle de sujets sensibles comme : l'auto-mutilation, le meurtre, la perversité, le cannibalisme... Donc âmes sensibles s'abstenir !
N'hésitez pas non plus à fouiller votre bureau d'ordi après avoir terminé un chapitre, vous risquez de trouver un nouvel élément...
Pour conclure ce jeu m'a bien plu, j'aimerais pouvoir en dire davantage, mais je préfère vous laisser entrer dans cette "aventure" macabre.

First of all. I finished the game and I didn't get all the steam cards, wich I don't understand why.
What else should I do to get them??
I liked the story, it instantly gave me a pressure. The navigation in game is ehh for me.
Not too much puzzle in it. I actually remember only one.
It has some glitchy bugs.. or is it part of the game? letters and numbers blinking on the screen few times, when mouse moving.
Also it has a bug if you don't play it out by one sitting and you load the saved to continue, yuo lose 2 items from your inventory. And those are important stuff, but you can find them again.
Short but dark. Only play it if you're not a faint of heart, because this game touches some messed up crap,
And holy hell the end is really got me, not gonna lie.

Amazing game that always creeps back into my mind and gives me a chill all over again.
The point and click elements are kinda boring and sometimes obtuse, but [b]this game is really good at one thing : Unsettling you.[/b] From the environnements to the characters, and especially the end part, ugh. I've played this game like a year ago and i'm still thinking about it sometimes.
TLDR, if you wanna be actually really disturbed, play this. If you want a polished experience with a lot of thought, use your money on something else.
This game is one of the darkest I've ever played. From the eerie music to the disturbing art to the jumpscares and the moments when free will is ripped from you... everything combines to tell an artistic interpretation of one of the most predatory humans to ever live. The one reason I can't recommend this game is because of it immortalizes the trauma of real victims and their families. The actions you're forced to take to complete the game are disgusting. It makes sense given the character you play, but still, it made me very uneasy. Definitely not a game for anyone sensitive, especially regarding child abuse and torture.
В принципе, игра мне скорее понравилась, чем нет, но я бы не стала рекомендовать эту игру людям, мало кто может спокойно играть за убийцу ну и плюс тема с протагонистом о которой я напишу дальше была так себе. Я бы поставила ей 7/10, не дотянули с уровнем жести, беспонтовые скримеры это худший из способов напугать, стоило дожимать атмосферу безумия и мерзотности происходящего.
Вообще, про игру я узнала ооочень давно, когда читала статью про Альберта Фиша и там была указана эта игра.
Что мне понравилось: Классный визуал, музыка на фоне, письма от протагониста игроку и конечно же фишечка в конце, когда игра выкидывает тебя на рабочий стол и говорит, что ты теперь неразрывно связан с протагонистом. Это прям жирнющий плюс к атмосфере игры.
Ещё, я рада, что игра не слишком большая и проходится часа за 3, если не тупить.
Что не понравилось: Очень нуторная система перемещения между локациями. Ты не можешь переключаться быстро с локации на локацию, надо самостоятельно доводить мышку до края экрана и только тогда нажать на кнопку перемещения. Это очень сильно начинает надоедать, когда ты начинаешь перемещаться-туда сюда бегать между локациями.
Плюс, мне не понравилось то, что было сделано эдакое "разделение" личности персонажа. Что вот есть Гамильтон, бедный несчастный парень, которого голоса заставляли убивать и тот злой, плохой "Ангел", который говорил что он ОБЯЗАН подчиняться. Я ожидала от игры совсем не этих типичных оправданий убийц, что я не я лошадь не моя. Я скорее ожидала, что мы будем проходить какую-то жесть прям действительно из жизни этого маньяка, а на деле были взяты парочка эпизодов из биографии про одно из убийств, добавили мистики, галлюцинаций и оставили все последующие происшествия на то, что "Это будет в далёком будущем".
Honestly, this game might have distressing themes and setting, but what i found really distressing are technical features, like those flickering images, out of focus text barely readable, and bugs. After 1 hour of play with my eyes buring i find myself stuck. I check a guide online and i did everything correctly, so there is no reason why i can't continue. i check the forum, others have had the same issue in the same point, no solution. Not worth continuing
An intriguing, hazy experience. Some very interesting snippets. For me it was too grotesque, unrelatable and dissociative to be genuinely disturbing. In a word, baffling.

[b]Talking about Albert Fish[/b]
I watched a very detailed video about the things Albert did before I knew about this game's existence. I would say this game portrays him as having more humanity than the IRL guy. It's very complicated. On one hand he has some kind of mental illness where he hears voices that he follows - but the real dude was just simply a sadomasochistic psychopath. I do not believe he was a decent guy that was simply mentally ill. No, there are the guys who did do things purely based on mental illness but sadism is sadism - a disorder, not an illness. Albert was obviously very ill but he was probably sadistic by default. Nevertheless, normal victims do not become evil.
It is a cool idea to think about if it was possible that Albert could have you know, not ended up evil. This is just a work of fiction, based on an Albert, but altering him, so that he isn't necessarily evil. The player is kind of like another voice in his head telling him what to do.
[b]What I think of the game[/b]
The music is really nice and there is a great atmosphere. the art style looks gross, but at the same time I like it because it fits the theme and the mind of a sadomasochist (although depending on your choices Albert might not be a sadist). The only thing I disliked was the text being confusing since it's not obvious when Albert is thinking/talking or another character is talking because the text is the same.

[spoiler]Damn, the man at the end saying that I don't control when the game ends, he does, then the game minimises, there is an overlay of text on the screen and then the game crashes. I knew this was a thing in some games but this is the first horror game I have ever played that closed itself and did a text overlay thing. Very cool[/spoiler]
This is a tough one. I'm familiar with the person and events this game is based off of, and I'm virtually never in favor of censorship but I didn't get much from this game. There is some clever 4th wall breaking and the presentation/art style are appropriately horrific. There isn't a ton of what I think of as "gameplay" but it's a point-and-click so that's to be expected. The major issue I have is I'm not really sure I got the point of the storyline (and if you don't see where this is going 5 minutes in even without knowing the real events I don't know how you function in life). Not everyone has to be a hero (flawed or otherwise) and not every story needs a moral or happy ending. It's fairly disturbing to spend an entire game selecting text responses related to some of these topics, listening to characters plead, and hearing some ugly sounds. I guess that's the point maybe and that's perfectly fine if people want to do that. As someone who has done some research on what actually happened though I didn't come away with any new insights or thoughts compared to when I went in, and the narrative us really kind of the deal with this style of game. If you want a trippy, morbid, depressing experience of what might be going on inside the head of a very mentally ill pyscho go for it.All that said the product did a good job of ruining my evening; it's certainly not a slapped together hackjob or anything. I wish there was a neutral score but I have to rate this as thumbs down because it's appeal is just so incredibly niche I don't know too many people I would ever recommend it to.

I did not expect what this game entailed. When it said "based on a true event," it really meant a true event.
If you have a weak constitution, don't play this story game. The story within is confusing at first but turns graphic with visuals and sounds. If you can handle it, this is a must play to learn of a incredibly gruesome story.
The game itself played well and encountered one bug, but not game breaking.
A disturbing story about Hamilton/Albert Fish who is a child predator to put it briefly. Definitely not a game you should be playing if you're sensitive to these topics.
Masochisia doesn't shy away from the psychological warframe our character goes through to end up the way they are, from physical, mental, and manipulative abuse with some religious connotation coming from their family, creating a situation where we get an insight of them not knowing who is who or what's real or is it all in their head.
I am going to give credit to the grim, crooked character design, this was not only a miserable experience but a learning one explaining why certain people committed certain crimes of taking away people's rights and consensus. Not a game I would recommend to anyone who suffers from any form of physical or mental abuse. If that's you please move on.
I'm someone who has played many games over the course of their life, and is very familiar with the postmodern trend of exploring morality in video games. Morality in video games is - even at its best - a hollow, inconsequential, number line. A single axis. An evil-mometor. Spec Ops forces you to use white phosphorous and concludes by telling you you're a bad person who could have put the game down anytime you wanted. MGSV, Mass Effect, any open world game of the last decade, they all give you moral points for tasks as about as insulting as "do you choose to save or shoot the puppy?" Even Undertale can't escape the formula of {input bad deed = make player feel bad}. It's cataclysm ending of a black screen and howling wind eventually surrenders to the omnipotence of the player - their control over technology. Morality in video games is inherently, fundamentally worthless because the only consequence it can impart is making you feel like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and even then there's always the option of save file manipulation.
Masochisia is well aware of this. When it makes its occasional nudge towards self-awareness as a video game it doesn't try to stop you nor does it try to spell out "hey, isn't what you're doing a little messed up?". It's aware of its inevitability. It's the throughline of its narrative. The uncertain terror that rises from a sadomasochistic lust from the victim towards their abuser. The questionable inevitability of the cycle of abuse. To what end is judgement conjured up and given out? The aesthetics, the dialogue, and the energy of Masochisia succeed in leading the player, subtle or abrupt, towards a fateful destiny.
Perhaps its a rationalist impulse to want to conquer a game by seeing it to its end, to assert power over technology, to be the consumer consuming the product. A form of media whose lack of consequence is not only well known - it's a selling point. Maybe years of playing video games have numbed you from the very thought of putting down a game because you morally object to it. Masochisia knows. And when you find out, per video or written guide on the game's community hub that do a tremendous job decoding the mystery,[spoiler]that you've followed in every footstep, every indulgence of a real life sadomasochistic serial killer[/spoiler] that's when Masochisia wins. That's what powerlessness is. That is a true judgement of morality. What does it feel like to lose?

Ok, ok. Listen up ya punks. How can you be so weirdly impressed by this? Is this really what you think it's like?
I was hoping for a lot more nuance from the game before I went in, but the game severely disappointed me. I think the transition of the killer (basically Albert Fish) was too rash and more like a caricature. The idea of being fated to become a psycho killer is a good premise, like I would have loved to see more detail and greyness in terms of theming and how a person would deal with this, but instead I just got him actually being crazy already and, even though it is obvious it is all in his head (and so cannot even be fate really (well except for the fact that [spoiler] it already happened [/spoiler])), we still go through the whole shtick anyway, and I don't feel like anything got explored. A lot of the time the character seemed to do things that did not make sense at all and there was a lot of giving impressions of some deeper stuff without giving it to me. I dunno, just felt kind of dark just for the sake of being dark, instead of exploring the deep complexity of what these people are like, and, through playing as them, allowing for some more tragic empathy with how their lives went. I don't think the game did that beyond a very simple, unsophisticated view of things.
If you want something better, even reading the wiki page would be more effective.
Spooky
one of the most interesting psych horror games i've ever played - officially made me cry
Buggy, boring, pretentious and predictable. Overall a low quality product, a dissapointment.
In any case, dissapointment is the world of choice whenever you try to find stories dealing with the motivations behind murder. They always focus in how circumstances made murderers the way they are, why is so hard to accept that there are inherently bad people?
Why is that humans need to find exotic explanations to the existence of evil?
A fireman saves a koala from a wild fire in Australia, healing the wounds and giving it water. Meanwhile in Johannesburg a woman driving her child to the school witnesses 4 men burning alive another one in the other side of the road for whatever stupid reason. The problem is not in their circumstances, it is in their wicked brains.
We all have violent compulsions, violence is clearly a fascinating theme to many of us, but trust me, having a bad childhood won't make you eat children alive.
This game is so old now, that i hardly spoil anything with saying - read up on the real story, and this somehow just becomes all the more f'ed up.
Amazing game, i wish oldblood would have made more in the same vein so to speak.

Certainly fascinating, however there's virtually no actual gameplay. The game is so short that it might only be worth buying only if it is strongly discounted.
The atmosphere is pretty good, but overall I don't think there really is much of gameplay at all, and for a walking simulator doesn't work. Can't say much about how it ends because at one time the game just broke and got stuck. A scene is supposed to play but it just doesn't.
This game is incredible.
Super creepy game with an awesome art style. The subject matter is disturbing, but I enjoy games with dark themes. I really hope this developer makes more games in this style. The characters and even the trees in the game look uniquely drawn.
There are some typos in the dialogue, but nothing too bad. Also, I'm not sure if it was my mouse or if it's just a little difficult to go scroll from side to side in the game. Sometimes you need to have it positioned just right for it to work.
Other than that, I enjoyed the game. Please read the warnings of the game before you play if you're not used to games with such dark themes. :)

Сюжет слабый, пугают банальными скримаками, атмосфера и звуковое сопровождение в принципе неплохие.
Наверно нужно искать некий глубинный смысл, чтобы понять посыл. Мне не зашло.

Hard to recommend, and strongly disturbing. However, if you can stomach it there's a dark and foreboding story there about the child that would become the Werewolf of Wisteria.

Exceptionally short, with little story and next to no puzzles. The story is surface level and isn't redeemed by the twists. It has clever moments but isn't enough for the price - get it while its on sale.
I have nothing really to say, other than that this game is worth giving a go if the gruesome subject matter is something you can stomach. Entertaining, disturbing, and just a lil bit spooky. Didn't love the jumpscares but I appreciated that they actually seemed to have somewhat of a purpose other than pure shock value.

This is an awkward "recommendation", because I am aware that this game will make many of my point-and-click allies feel unpleasantly awkward.
The game is an experience which I personally liked. There are issues, of course, but as a whole, at the end of the game I feel like it was worth the time I spent on it.

Интересная экспериментальная психологическая хоррор игра про небольшой отрывок (хоть и не совсем точный и с художественным вымослом) из биографии маньяка Альберта Гамильтона Фиша.
Заинтересовался этой темой ещё больше после просмотра на YouTube обзора от Faust21 Психология серийных убийц.
Читаю все эти восторженные отзывы и нифига их не понимаю. Начнем с хорошего. Про Альберта Фиша я читал задолго до этой игры, так что при упоминании погоняла Яичница с беконом, сразу понял, о ком идет речь. Ок. Отсылка на реальные события сработала. Плюсик. Так же в копилку плюсов могу добавить звук (особенно в сцене на складе), рисовку и атмосферу. И... Все. В остальном игра более чем посредственна. Сюжета здесь нет. Психологизма, который по идее должен заставлять чувствовать себя неловко и включать синдром поиска глубинного смысла, тоже нет. Пустые локации раздражают. Геймплея нет. При виде медведя с оленьими рогами вообще заржать хотелось. Скримеры - лажа. Чувство вины отсутствует, т.к. мне предлагают либо творить дичь, либо выключить игру. На заметку: чтобы это чувство появилось, надо либо запутывать игрока, дабы он сам наступил на грабли, как в Deus Ex с обновлением биочипа, либо создавать сюжетно ситуацию, в которой вынужден выбирать из двух зол меньшее, не зная при том, какие последствия у его выбора будут, как в Beholder. В свое время на этом прокололась для меня Spec Ops: The Line в своей знаменитой сцене, потому что до ее появления, я всеми силами старался ее избежать. Даже слом четвертой стены не удался. Игра проходится за 3 часа, ни разу ее не выключаясь. Соответственно увидеть те самые письма на рабочем столе я смог только после ее прохождения. А ведь они задумывались именно, как диалог с игроком в перерывах между включением игры, судя по тому, что появлялось каждое из этих писем после прохождения определенного акта. Когда же игра начала бузить, русификатор послал меня нафиг, показывая английский текст, чем убил завершающий момент напрочь. Короче, игра так себе. Не советую ее брать.
It's been years since I played it, and I can still recall the experience quite well. I don't think anything else I have come across, in any medium, has better portrayed what I imagine Hell would be like. You can barely tell what's real, what's traumatic flashback, and what's hallucination: all you know is that you live in a world of misery, with not a single hint of light in the darkness, and the best relief being self-harm.
This is the story that creates empathy and relatability for someone so monstrous, that they were found to qualify for the insanity defense, but were [i]still[/i] unanimously chosen to receive the death penalty. This is the world that makes you think about the side of reality that you never want to think about. This is the experience that makes the horrific events shown in the media feel unimportant and almost fake. This is what you play if you want to permanently question the idea that trauma makes you stronger.
You may have to refund this game before barely getting into it. It may be too much even if you didn't think that was possible for you. But I would still recommend buying it, even if you would refund upon making it to the main menu, just to [i]touch[/i] that part of your mind that you so sorely try to hide from.

Вот что действительно получилось у разработчика, так это передача атмосферы безумия и безысходности. Само только наблюдение за тем, как главный антигерой постепенно сходит с ума и становится в итоге, скажем так, не самым хорошим человеком, уже стоит того, чтобы пройти эту игру. Даже в нынешнее время существует очень мало инди-проектов, которые могут дать похожий игровой опыт и позволить побыть в шкуре маньяка-психопата. Однозначно must have для любителей психологических хорроров.

Recommended, albeit with some vague hesitation.
This is a nasty little game. There's a lot of sick stuff in here, as expected for a game based on Albert Fish, but it doesn't feel gratuitous (maybe besides the early sound-effects of a kid being beaten - that really got me, and I could have done without). It's definitely one of the more unsettling games I've ever played.
A note: I had a game-stopping bug that prevented me from finishing for a while, but after a few months I returned and found I could complete the game, so the devs must have fixed it.
Что ж... Я не знаю, могу ли я вообще рекомендовать эту игру. Хотя, скорее, это попытка в некий экскурс в окончательно слетающий с катушек разум ребёнка. Тут восхитительная рисовка и очень приятная музыка. Однако, впихивая своё ИМХО, мне не хватило напряжения в этой игре. То есть... Вроде бы сюжет располагает к напряжению, какой-то драме и жести, но этого ничего нет. За 3 часа, которые мне потребовались на прохождение, я так и не смогла проникнуться этим персонажем, и вовсе не от того, кто именно является им. Просто он... Не раскрыт. Не знаю, мне не показалось, что автор достаточно хорошо раскрыл и обрисовал все предпосылки к этим всем событиям, хотя и явно пытался.
По итогу, если тщательно всё осмыслить, мне проект показался довольно сырым, хоть и с огромным потенциалом. А ещё в нём присутствую до сих пор баги, о которых люди рапортовали 5 лет назад. Видимо, разработчик считает, что даже с этими багами его продукт достаточно хорош и заниматься ими нет смысла.
P.S. Для ясности: отрицательный отзыв тут стоит не из-за того, что это, о ужас!, игра про Альберта Фиша. Это просто не цепляющая и очень короткая игра, вот и всё. Хотя, если Вы достаточно ранимая и чувствительная особа, то и подавно не стоит в это играть, ведь, о ужас!, это игра про Альберта Фиша.)
Не отрывалась от игры, даже в туалет. Очень сильно увлекло и затянуло. В конце почувствовала себя сволочью, когда узнала что это была я....
Очень необычный проект, позволяющий получить некоторое представление о психических заболеваниях (привет, Сенуа). Ну а пара геймдизайнерских находок просто взорвала мозг. Крайне рекомендую к ознакомлению, но исключительно тем, кого может заинтересовать данная тематика.

Ich messe ein Videospiel an zwei Fragen:
1. Macht es mir Spaß, während ich es spiele?
2. Bleibt es mir langfristig in Erinnerung, nachdem ich es durchgespielt habe?
Ich liebe Spiele, die in mir Gefühle entfachen, von denen ich nicht ahnte, dass ich sie habe und die mich zum Nachdenken über Themen und Fragen anregen, mit denen ich mich vorher kaum auseinandergesetzt habe. Im besten Fall liefert mir ein Spiel neue Blickwinkel und bringt mir etwas über mich selbst bei.
Anstatt dass ich Spiele bezüglich Grafik, Sound und Steuerung bewerte, sind meine wichtigsten Faktoren daher Spaßfaktor, Immersion und Story. Keine Spoiler!

„Spaß“ ist angesichts der Materie wahrscheinlich das falsche Wort. Die paar Rätsel, die das Spiel bietet, fand ich ganz interessant, aber es sind bei Weitem nicht so viele wie bei typischen Point-and-Click-Adventures. Es gibt nur eine Handvoll verschiedener Screens und Items, aber bei knapp vier Stunden Spielzeit – ich brauche übrigens tendenziell länger als andere Spieler*innen – ist es nur ein kleiner Kritikpunkt.
Was ich hingegen doch nervig fand, ist die langsame Fortbewegung. Wir schauen aus der Ego-Perspektive, steuern aber wie in einem Side-Scroller (vgl. Moorhuhn); und der Weg vom linken zum rechten Bildschirmrand hat mir einfach zu lange gedauert. Im Wald habe ich mich des Öfteren verirrt (kann aber auch an meinem Orientierungssinn gelegen haben ;D) und da wir häufig von einem Ort zum anderen und wieder zurück laufen müssen, ist es mir umso stärker negativ aufgefallen.
Ich habe aber auch immer wieder geschaut, ob sich auf den anderen Screens etwas verändert hat, nachdem ich eine Aufgabe abgeschlossen hatte. Hat sich nicht. Mein Tipp daher: Mach einfach das, was dir die Charaktere sagen und verschwende deine Zeit nicht mit minutenlanger Erkundung. Meine Neugier hat mir höchstens zwei extra Encounter gebracht – und ich bin mir nicht einmal sicher, ob ich diese nicht sowieso gesehen hätte.
Das Hauptaugenmerk des Spiels liegt auf der Atmosphäre und der Story. Dementsprechend sind die Dialoge auch die eigentliche Stärke des Gameplays. Wie gesagt, ein paar Adventure-Rätsel gibt es, aber am meisten „Spaß“ hatte ich dabei, mir den Kopf darüber zu zerbrechen, was ich zu wem sage. Hatten meine Entscheidungen am Ende überhaupt eine Auswirkung? Ich glaube nicht. Aber wenn es ein Spiel gibt, das dadurch besser wird, dass ich im Endeffekt „keine Wahl“ hatte, ist es Masochisia.
[h2]Immersion[/h2]
Hast du den Film “Joker” (2019) gesehen? Masochisia hat mich in ungefähr dieselbe erdrückende und verstörende Stimmung versetzt. Die “Notice” am Anfang des Spiels ist ernst gemeint. Im Menü gibt es einen Punkt “Get Help”, der dir die Nummer für die “Domestic Abuse Hotline” gibt. Das alles klingt vielleicht nach edgy Marketing-Gimmick, aber ich persönlich hatte in keinem Moment das Gefühl, dass das Spiel seine Thematik nicht ernst genug nehmen würde. Und es ist wirklich starker Tobak.
Ich konnte mich in einen misshandelten, psychisch kranken Serienmörder hineinversetzen. Da ich – und da bin ich unglaublich dankbar – keinen Vergleichswert habe, weiß ich nicht, wie realistisch ich mich in diese Person hineinversetzen konnte. Es hat sich für mich aber so echt wie nur irgendwie in einem Videospiel möglich angefühlt.

Masochisia richtet sich frei nach der Biografie einer realen Person. Wenn du nach deinem Playthrough die „wahre Geschichte“ erfahren willst, habe ich ein Erklär-Video in meinem Let's Play verlinkt. Dieses Video entschlüsselt die vielen Hex-Codes, die an mehreren Stellen im Spiel (oder hier auf der Store Page) auftauchen. Die Geschichten, die mir persönlich am längsten im Kopf bleiben, sind diejenigen, die ich erst auf den zweiten Blick wirklich durchschaue. Und Masochisia erzählt eine ebensolche Geschichte.
Und dann hat Masochisia noch mehrere dieser WTF-Momente, die ich auf diese Weise sonst nur aus “The Stanley Parable” kenne. Hierzu sage ich weiter nichts, damit du es für dich selbst erfahren kannst. Das alles verleiht dem Spiel eine persönliche Note, die auch Tage danach noch spürbar ist.
