An Elusive Killer Shocks a High-Tech Lab!
Fear lingers in a remote laboratory after a physicist's suspicious demise. A police investigation resulted in nothing except a case as cold as the secretive personalities and steel walls that enshroud a top-secret Tesla-inspired facility. That's why the lab owner asked you, as Detective Nancy Drew, to expose the terrifying truth about The Deadly Device!

I thought the story, characters, and map were very well done. The puzzles were well themed and interesting, though I did have to use the walkthrough more than I wanted. The main negative for me was I felt there were too many timed puzzles. 8/10
Good overall, though some puzzles are a bit tedious.
Love this game, played it when I was a kid and was super happy to find it on steam recently. Only thing is that there's a file that has to be deleted from the game files after install for it to be able to open which was pretty frustrating to try and find, but other than that, it worked great.
Completely incomprehensible plot, but still a favorite of mine.
THIS GAME WAS SO SHRIMPIN AMAZING
For non native English speakers un peu difficile. But very good, I approve
This one is really well put together. It's a shame that I hate the location. But the actual mystery, story beats, and puzzles are great.
good game
I love Nancy Drew, played them all. However this one, I tried once with family and we gave up. We just tried again for the second time... took us roughly 14 plus hours to get through. We all agreed it was not worth the stress over the amount of puzzles that were not straight forward. Just to name one of the puzzles specifically there is a 'hangman' word puzzle, that they made the unfortunate choice of making it possible for Mason's name to fit in when it was never ever ever ever part of the solution. I was playing on Junior/Easy mode as well, but goodness gracious... time and time again we were all saying how this particular Nancy Drew should not be for 10 year olds. Even with using the hints occasionally, it was a struggle for a group of adults. This also has to be one of the darkest and serious Nancy drews, that really lost the lighthearted feeling of all the other Nancy Drew games. It didn't feel fun, but more of a chore.
I even liked the Salem Nancy Drew game which most people did not like, and I would choose that one over this. This one should have been filed away under 'the lost Nancy Drew games,' and have remained lost.
One of the top-tier Nancy Drew games!
Fun, if a bit complex and sciency.
Seems even more relevant now than when 1st released.
Enjoyed it.
I liked it, but some puzzles are quite challenging
Very science heavy and forward game. I know that's not for everyone - but I love this Nancy game!!! The murder is interesting and trying to solve it along with all the complex and challenging puzzles along the way is brilliant.
It's a fun game that has puzzles centered on science including chemistry, circuits, and binary.
This game is geared towards STEM minded individuals but has a great storyline- murder. Memorable characters and location make this game a re-play in my books!
Another fun and challenging Nancy Drew game!
There was little to no direction in this one it felt like after the first few days, but the puzzles were fun (minus end game, I am definitely no an electrical engineer!) and I adored the characters! The plot and setting were super cool too - I just wish it had a little bit more to go off of closer to the middle of the game. The am/pm shift splits were weird too, but that's a minor annoyance!
This game was pretty good to be honest, cool graphics and interesting plot.
honestly if I worked with gary I would've knocked him out too.
7.5/10
Good game.
First half of the game was fun, but towards the end it started to get more confusing, especially when it comes to puzzles with machinery. Overall I do recommend this game, but it was a bit more complicated and boring compared to the other Nancy Drew games I've played before
d
Jeb 100%!
Really enjoyed this episode. It threaded the needle for challenging vs. frustrating puzzle wise. Did have a moment that I got stuck in the photolab after completing a task and couldn't move, but a save and completing a different task allowed me to progress.
Definitely a game for those who love puzzles and learning at the same time. A little on the difficult side but still lots of fun!
Loved the classic Nancy drew puzzles
This game was stupid hard or maybe I'm just stupid.
Translation: this is the hardest Nancy Drew game.
game good, great number of puzzles and a good ratio of content vs. solving
Every Nancy Drew game has intriguing characters and fun puzzles! I can play them over and over and never get tired of them!
One of the tougher, puzzle-heavy games in the series with a great plot and interesting (if not endearing) characters. Love all the Nancy games! If you like Curse of Blackmoor Manor, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, or Shadow at the Water's Edge, you'll love this game too!
It was a fun game in line with the series. This one felt easier than some of the other games though.
I've played it twice now. Fun game! Stick around after the credits for bloopers and extra scenes ;)
I'm playing my way through all of the ND games, and I suspect most people reading this review are too, regardless of reviews! But here are my thoughts anyway.
unfortunately, i found myself gritting my teeth whilst getting through this one...in my opinion, it's one of the harder & more complicated ND titles. this makes sense to align with the premise of the game, but the majority of the puzzles are very technical and science-y, and the majority you have to consult a note or previously read book for, compared to over games where it's more intuitive. I will say that the plot for this game is quite good and this was one of the few ND titles that I genuinely was unsure of who it could be until the endgame, compared to the last one i played (final scene) where it became obvious quite sooner ! i'm glad to have played it, but this one was just so jargon-y it made it hard to get through imo
One of the better Nancy Drew games in my opinion, although some fans of the series rate this one lower. Good plot, even if the culprit is obvious. The biggest thing that sets this game apart from the others in the series for me is the soundtrack. Every time we booted up the game, the menu music got me pumped and right back into the atmosphere.
Great game if you want to play something casual as a family. One person controls the game, but everyone can work together to find out what you need to do.
lOVE this game
Tomb of the Lost Queen
A great addition to the Nancy Drew line-up. This is one of the 'newer' games by Her Interactive that I felt really had a great mystery & fantastic cast of characters. Even though I've played this game before I found myself still guessing on who the culprit was. This obviously is due to how long it's been between playthroughs, but they never made it immediately discernible who the culprit was. The only complaint for me is the amount of puzzles and how STEM focused they were. I may have had the patience to learn these methods as a kid, not so much anymore as an adult. All in all a solid entry in the franchise.
dumb
This game is very enjoyable! It had an impeccable plot, unique characters, and outstanding music! The game follows the investigation of niko Jovic, a brilliant research scientist who was brutally and mysteriously murdered by his own machine. Unfortunately, the police investigation had gone cold. Recruited to reopen the case and discover the true killer, you must go undercover at a lonely, unsettling physics lab in the desolate mountain ranges of Colorado. The game is suspensful and mysterious, and the ending is spectacular (one of my favorite nancy drew game ending sequences.) This game also includes one of my all-time favorite characters, Ryan. She has a dynamic, quirky, fun personality that's so fun to interact with! The rest of the characters are unique and well-made as well, if not up to the same level. The music in this game is fabulous! Whether suspensful and riveting, dark and mysterious, despairing and lonely, or upbeat and cheerful, this game's music has it all. I would definitely recommend; if not my favorite nd game ever, it definitely holds its own as one of only two nd murder mysteries. There is no other game anything like it! If you are a stem student you'd probably enjoy it even more that I did, as the game revolves around a physics lab. ;)
awesome, not too hard but not too easy puzzles, interasting, am still messing with that dude's stuff on the desk he has neatly organised mwahahahaha... also almost had 'em! but my stupid laptop turned itself off because the battery died... the irony
Deadly Device is fine, it's more a game for Nancy Drew fans than it is for anyone playing one of these games for the first time. The puzzles are very number oriented, and the murder plot line is very interesting, it's just that some aspects are done very poorly that ruin my enjoyment for it.
This one incorporates a day night cycle, half the areas only being accessible at a certain time, and it's very tedious. You need to access this area at a night time to complete a puzzle, but you'll only see if you got the right answer when you switch to day time, so you have to run all the way downstairs to go to bed. Turns out you did the puzzle incorrectly, so now you have to run to bed to switch to night, go back upstairs to do the puzzle, run back downstairs to switch back to day-- it's all just an extra amount of back and forth.
When you are actually doing detective work it's pretty fun, but it's going to take a lot of walking to get to that point.
I love love love this game. To me, I love a game that I find challenging, but not so hard that I end up having to look up answers or tutorials, and this game did a really good job of giving you a challenge but also giving you all of the clues you need. There were a couple instances where I would get lost trying to find an item that was randomly placed somewhere in the building, but it never got to the point where I was actually mad about it haha. The plot was great, the stakes felt high, and it was great to really learn more about the characters. Highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a fun little challenge.
Very good game!
so fun
I have been an avid ND fan for a long time, at this point I've played almost all of the games. This one was really fun! I liked that you are investigating an actual murder. It was challenging enough but I didn't find it overly difficult to piece things together. In many of the other games there are times I find myself scratching my head with what to do next because its not clear what you need to do, and I didn't find myself doing that at all in this one. Not to say its too easy but the game progression is logical and makes sense. I saw other comments that this is one of the tougher ND games but I really didn't think so. You don't need to be great in science to figure out the puzzles. Definitely would recommend for anyone! This was a very 'middle of the road' game for me, not super challenging but not super easy. You don't need to be a ND fan to enjoy IMO.
This is the first Nancy Drew game that my fiancée and I couldn't finish.
The lab setting is very interesting, and the science is really cool, but unlike most Nancy Drew games in which the mystery unravels, this one requires you to untie the knot by force.
You end up running back and forth between the same locations over and over, finding a small clue that pushes you forward a little bit, only to reach another dead end. Most of the characters are obnoxious and uninteresting and the puzzles are a bit convoluted, especially in how you find them.
It's well done for the most part, but we got to a point with it where we felt like we weren't playing it for fun, but as a chore, despite our interest in the subject matter.
This is a good game if you are REALLY into science and engineering. This game pretty much consisted of only tedious puzzles that didn't even make sense. Worst of all was that it was often difficult to tell what you needed to do next. I had to consult a guide for things that should have been a bit more obvious. I love science, but NONE of these puzzles made sense; especially since you're trying to solve a murder mystery. Most of the puzzles were geared around a Tesla coil and electricity, but not a murder.
One of the reasons I bought the game was because it takes place in Colorado. However, YOU NEVER GO OUTSIDE or even learn anything about Colorado! No exploring the mountains or anything, which is such a shame because Colorado is so beautiful. Plus, the game did not include classic Nancy Drew food activities. There are so many opportunities to do that in a setting like Colorado! This state literally has some of the most famous (and delicious) food on Earth!
In all, too many tedious and meaningless puzzles without enough of the classic Nancy Drew activities. The balance just wasn't there. This game really had potential, but it was a real miss for me.
Fun game! Loved the story and characters. The point and click style can be frustrating at times but it's nostalgic and straightforward, also manageable using the hints. I particularly enjoyed the engineering problems and interesting historical facts, as well as the mini-games.
i love all the nancy drew games
Game is engaging and helps the player figure out the story and characters. I love this game
Mystery solving was not so much as the highlight in this (even dialogue sometimes felt put aside), it's mostly a series of puzzles, but because there are so many puzzles in this game (hit or miss) I still think this is a Nancy Drew game I can recommend to people who wanna try a really fun point-and-click adventure.
I am a Nancy Drew super fan. I've played the games since 2003 with Message in a Haunted Mansion. If you're looking for an honest review from a Nancy Drew fan, then look no further. I highly recommend this Nancy Drew game. It's a classic murder mystery, there's suspicions among all the suspects, the puzzles are fun and exciting, and the characters are fantastic. This is probably one of my favorite Nancy Drew games of all 33 games. No spoiler review.
Some people in the steam reviews are mentioning that the puzzles are "science themed". If you struggled with Science Class growing up, or if you aren't the biggest fan of science themed puzzles - don't fret. Deadly Device won't have you do any lab reports, you won't be dissecting anything. There's no Haunt of Castle Malloy chemical explosions in one mistake. There's no memorizing the periodic table of elements. The puzzles in this game LOOK sciency, but in reality, they are just the same old Nancy Drew puzzles we know and love with a "science theme" tacked on to them cosmetically. So don't stress out if you see this game and immediately get turned off by the science theme, because that's not the case here.
I think what makes this game very enticing is the genuine murder mystery. The head scientist got murdered in cold blood, and someone at the lab is the culprit. There's no accident here. Someone really did it in cold blood. And it's one of the employees at the lab. This Nancy Drew game isn't "scary" compared to say, Shadow at the Water's Edge, or Ghost of Thornton Hall. BUT what makes this game terrifying on a whole other level is that the same level of terror you get in Among Us. Someone in this lab is an lying, they are an impostor and they are willing to kill Nancy too if she doesn't solve the mystery. It's that kind of scary that makes blood run cold. This isn't a horror movie scary, this is borderline psychological thriller scary.
As the game progresses, Nancy falls into the killer's game of traps, deceit, and more. There's a lot of plot twists, turns, and intense situations of characters doing very SUS things, and it's up to Nancy to figure out if it's because they are the killer OR if there's something else that's happening behind the scenes. It's a very deep Nancy Drew game with A LOT of plot and intrigue going on behind the scenes.
As for the gameplay, the mystery takes place in a science lab that Nancy lives at. There's a dorm where Nancy spends her time relaxing. Players can switch between day and night in order to talk to different characters. It's seamless and fun being able to explore the lab at different times. The game itself isn't that big compared to other Nancy Drew games BUT the lab is also packed with "locked" areas that become open with time. I love when Nancy Drew games purposely close off locations to build suspense and intrigue and this is one of them. It also reminds us that not all video games need to be GIANT places. Not all video games need to be these vast, open worlds. Games can be smaller and focus on story.
I think what also really helps here is the terror that a killer is on the loose in this lab, and it really makes us the players SCARED that this lab is so small. It's frightening and honestly one of the coolest things about this game.
The OST in Deadly Device is the best I've heard yet. Discovery is one of my favorite Nancy Drew game songs of all time. I LOVE DISCOVERY. It's an amazing song. The game also has lots of sound effects. Lots of electrical sounds, lots of BEEPS and BOOPS. Lots of spooky stuff where you'll think "What was that?!" The game does a great job at building environments through sound.
Overall, if you're a new fan to Nancy Drew - this is definitely a must-buy. If you're a fan of the series, I also recommend buying this game. Deadly Device is my #1 Nancy Drew game of all time. It's a great mystery, the suspects are all SUS, the culprit reveal was unexpecting and amazing, the puzzles are classic Nancy Drew puzzles with a new sciency-cosmetic which is great, and I can't recommend this game enough. I love this Nancy Drew game.
Thanks for reading my review!
Challenging puzzles and longer gameplay than previous ND games I've played. The puzzles were entertaining and creative. You do not need a science background to be able to figure them all out.
Nancy Drew games were a big part of my childhood, so you can imagine how excited I was to find out they were all on Steam! (Took me a while, I know.) I immediately picked this one up on sale after seeing the trailer (being a huge science nerd) and totally loved it. I managed to complete it all on my own with only a hint or two for when I got really turned around.
The plot was interesting and the puzzles were very creative; I loved how they made sure to stick to the science theme with most of them. Of course, even though I enjoyed them, I know they're not everyone's cup of tea. Some puzzles can seem a bit technical at first glance, but the game does provide everything you need to solve them.
The entire game takes place in a relatively enclosed area, so the layout isn't too confusing, but let me tell you, it did get irksome going up and down the elevator so many times. There's also a lot of instrumentation around, so it can be a bit difficult to pick out items and to see if you've explored everything, especially in the lab, but thankfully the tasks help out on that end. These are just small things I noticed, but they didn't detract from the gameplay at all.
All in all, great game and would definitely recommend, especially if you're a science nerd like me.
The story is great, I did not expect the end villain. The story and characters were quite believable. As usual the puzzles were good.
The plot in this game was great, the puzzles were fairly challenging and required some look around for the information. The length of time spent playing this game was great for a Nancy Drew game. I would recommend! 9/10.
Liked it for the most part but super puzzle-heavy.
I came back to edit this:
I found this game challenging because of all the science based mini games, which is something I value in an ND game.
I think in my now deleted original review that the sediment that I was trying to provide was that, you should know what you get in a ND game. Theyre mostly fun, campy style, nostalgic games. I think what this game shines with is the way it added so much historic information which adds a lot of value to the game play (especially when the player is younger). Personally I love the more historic aspects of the games, especially when the information is true -- i think it is smart when the ND game makers provide that to their intended audience.
Overall the story line was easy to understand, mini-games and puzzles were all science based, suspects were mostly interesting and nothing was too repetitive. There are no food mini games or daily tasks. You are based in one area and the suspects and certain areas to snoop are only available during certain times.Included are Maze puzzles, chemical mixing, 3d puzzles, and lots of plot pushed clues.
This would be in a higher ranking for me. It personally set me off on a historic autobiography deep dive of several historic figures, firstly that of Tesla himself, that eventually led me to my final destination of a 19 hour audible course on the Middle Ages to the Tudor dynasty... So thanks HER ineractive, I guess I am smarter now,
THIS was a great ND Game. Some of the puzzles are pretty tricky but with the newer layout you can get hints fairly easily when you really need them. 10/10 would recommend!
I enjoyed this game, there are some repetitive aspects but nothing too awful or tedious. The puzzles have a nice variety and the difficulty is not overwhelming despite the scientific subject matter. The characters are pretty good, the addition of Deirdre as a phone contact is so much fun! As always the music in this game was top notch as well. My only complaint is that the culprit was a little easier to predict than in some of the other Nancy Drew games. Overall this game is enjoyable and interesting.
Solid who-dunnit story. Decently challenging puzzles.
cool
I love ND games in general, and this one was awesome! The music was amazing, and the premise was creative. I liked the science that was incorporated into the puzzles. The atmosphere was creepy enough that I definitely jumped a couple of times.
6/10 - Pretty good! The setting is kind of boring, but the puzzles are pretty good (except for all the ones that make you try to learn binary code and understand electromagnetic currents)
one of the best games in the series
i like the history of the game and love how challenging it is on master
I really liked this game, mostly because you're solving a murder which is much more serious and involved than most ND games. The ending is very unpredictable, but I was left a little confused about the murderer and what the culprit's motive was. But I enjoyed this game and recommend it to others.
I love this game it jump started my interest in computer science and the tech world in general
I would give this game a mixed review but :( The puzzles were really hard. A lot of them had to do with sciency stuff (cause its in a lab lol) and to be honest, I wasn't very good at them. The hints for them also really suck :( I don't know why none of the games with the new layout give good hints but :/ I also got stuck for a whole hour trying to move the story along and I couldn't figure out what to do.
If you are stuck trying to get the design plans from Ryan for the 3d printer, you need to fix a different part of the Tesla coil first :) You just have to click on the tesla coil and it should show a ton of parts that you need to fit properly.
. I liked the characters, especially Ryan :D And I think the twist was really good ;) I also loved the design of the lab but the music was a bit to suspensy for me :( Usually I expect suspense music when somethings about to happen but it would play all the time. I think you would probably like the game more if you liked science more than I do lol :)
One of their best titles!
Maybe not one of Nancy Drew's most exciting titles but an interesting one all the same.
Gummy Bear theatre, 15/10 would reccomend.
As someone who started playing these games back when Message in a Haunted Mansion was new, I really liked this game! Some of the newer Nancy games are so simple I've been able to beat them in half a day, the Deadly Device took me much longer (which is a good thing). This game has lots of good puzzles, and on senior level at least, doesn't spoon feed you the solutions. Great game overall.
It was a good Nancy Drew game but I thought a few of the puzzles required a big leap to make connections between materials/clues. i.e. certain machines are available for the entire game - some are used eventually, some aren't and sometimes it's a stretch to figure out the next step so you're left wandering and re-exploring. But good story, good dialogue, and the logic puzzles in this one were the best I've played in a long time.
This ND game was different to others I have played, i enjoyed the science-theme and the fact that it was a murder case. The pace was good and the characters keep you guessing till the end. I must admit that I found some puzzles very difficult on Master Sleuth! If you're up for a challenge I would give it a try :)
Great story, characters and puzzles
Yes the puzzles in here are a little harder, but that's the fun of it. Many fans will play all the games and if there's no increase in difficulty, what's the point. I for one really enjoyed the game.
This one was a little harder for me but I liked that. I love these games because ones like these teach me about certain subjects I wouldn't have learned about otherwise since physics is not my thing. Overall, fun!
Love!
This is a great game that really draws you into the scientic aspect of investigation. Its probably the first nancy drew since the very first to actually directly tell you there was a murder. That is a refreshing way of bringing in the game really. I loved it and have played it multiple times as a hard copy and once now as a steam copy.
for some reason the ending got cut off and the game shuts off as soon as i finish the last puzzle, i know there is more the whole thing gets wrapped up in a narative and i didnt get that
I wouldn't really recommend this game even though I'm a fan of Nancy Drew games.. I mean if you're a fan, then buy it, but if you're not sure of buying this game or not, don't. Unless it's on dramatically big sale.. Personally I like the old Nancy games tbh but it's just a matter of taste. Ghost of Thornton hall is a nice game
Pros:
*Tbh nothing but the voice acting
Cons:
* Bad graphics (worse than other nancy games in my opinion)
*Too hard (had to cheat to just get through with the story)
CONCLUSION:
Buy only if you're a fan and it's on sale
Nancy drew series is just amaaaazing
you would not regret to buy the series
Overall, an entertaining game.
The primary gameplay is a series of puzzles with a science basis to them. They are informative and fun (and a couple might require you to cheat and look up the answer). There are two levels of difficulty to choose from which is nice since it makes the game accessible to a wider audience.
The mystery itself that Nancy is solving takes a little while to get interesting, but the second half of the game ramps up the intrigue to a satisfying conclusion.
The entire Nancy Drew series of games are great. Clean, cool puzzles, interesting stories, over all very good game.
This installation of the Nancy Drew series is extremely difficult. Requiring some help on puzzles will most likely be necessary. Definitely a favorite of mine, not as good as Blackmoor Manor.
