The game was insipid. The puzzles were extremely difficult, especially the skeeball game.
I enjoyed this game a lot with its characters, story, and map. I actually wish I could've gotten to know some of the characters a little better. The use of hoodoo and spiders were not my favorite, and I really disliked that I constantly had to spin around the room to find doors, etc. I found the puzzles to be mostly logical; I did need help on one or two. Definitely worth getting. 8/10
Note: I used to own this game in my childhood and it was a good typical ND game.
I do not recommend it now though because it will not start up at all. When checking with ProtonDB, it says the game is borked. I tried all the different compatibility tools and none of them work. Do not purchase until this is fixed. Unfortunately I can't even return it to get a different ND game because I bought it in a bundle of 5 and I already completed the other 4 and it counts as gameplay towards this one as well.
one of the weaker ND games. kinda just feels like running errands and a waste of a cool setting.
Love! Perfect mix of puzzles, character interactions, and storyline. Great background music and pace of play. This was just as good as I remembered it being from childhood. Junior detective hardness offers hints and means you don't die, so I liked that, too.
I felt that this game was one of the best in terms of big picture and one of the worst in terms of the little details. The general plot kept you as the player hooked, and that's exactly what these types of games should do. That said, there were three major complaints I had about this game.
First, the main graveyard puzzle was FAR too long. Considering each time you have to go back and forth between house and graveyard every time you get a new clue, that should have been maybe half as long, maybe even shorter.
Secondly, the ending didn't make any sense - there was no sense of catching the villain, who just does a terrible thing and then just sits there and doesn't even try to escape afterward. Why doesn't the villain run? It doesn't make any sense.
Third and worst of all, the circumstances surrounding Bruno Bolet's death being considered "murder" is a stretch at best. I won't go any further on this point because to do so would be major game spoilers, but suffice it to say that the answer that we get practically means that the skull's powers, if any, have a big asterisk next to it that effectively undoes any effectiveness it claims to have.
On to the things I did like - the marble game was my favorite, which is a personal preference, but hey, it's my review. The bird feather puzzle was fun, and most of the rest of them were fun too. I did feel that some of them were a little bit difficult to figure out the rules, but the games themselves were lots of fun.
Overall, a good experience, but with several major areas for improvement. 6/10.
Loved it!!! This is probably one of my favorite Nancy Drew games. I really liked the thunder throughout the game too.
The book showing where each person is buried and their names was difficult to solve when it came to... that clue section. The ending could have been happier too.
Heerlijk relaxed puzzelen.
story ,vibe, love
One of the old classics, not less of a classic; lovely and genius puzzles, great atmosphere, hints aren't always a given, character switch gives a nice touch! About to play for 3rd time overall. Enjoy this Nancy Drew game!
Bess your gonna kill him!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!111!1!!! :(((((
I recently started replaying the classic Nancy Drew games that I haven't played since I was a kid. In an attempt to see them with the eyes of an adult who has much higher standards now.
Crystal Skull is not a good ND game. There is almost no plot, the main baddie is so obvious from the intro that it's laughable, the puzzles are incredibly tedious and some borderline impossible to figure out without a massive amount of trial and error. It's just not a fun game.
Very-very mild spolers, mostly vibe-talk.
At the time of writing this I have played a total of 8 ND games.
Second ND game I ever played, first being Danger by Design. I absolutely detested DAN, and if I hadn’t already bought CRY, I most likely would have sworn off of ND forever. Luckily not only did this game improve my impression of the series, it also absolutely rocked! CRY delivered on most, if not all, fronts. It really managed to demonstrate what about these games is so appealing to people.
This game was a total blast, and scratched my brain in a way, that immediately made it not only my favorite ND game, but one of my all-time favorite point-and-click games. In fact, I liked it so much I was worried all other ND games would be a letdown (they weren’t but CRY is still my favorite).
Firstly, I want to talk about this game’s atmosphere. It is a very bold choice to tell your player that your game should be played in the dark. When I read that, I thought “Yeah, sure”, but as soon as it opened, the rain, the spooky mansion, the jumpscare (worked on me ngl), the characters, the mystery, the plot, made me go “Okay, I see you, let’s do this properly”. And I’m so glad I followed this rule, because for the next three nights in a row I was sat. I would wait impatiently all day, just so that I could play this once the sun was down. I even played this with sound, something I hate doing (I know it’s weird, don’t come at me). But CRY made such an impression on me that I was compelled to turn up the volume (plus I really wanted to listen to the rain). I have since always had volume on for ND.
So, this game’s atmosphere, even upon introduction, was so captivating and powerful, that I did two very ooc things for myself. And boy did it pay off. This game’s aesthetic is far more complex than just rain+nighttime. It is so thought-out and rich in detail that I really felt like I was there, in the house, running around and solving the mystery.
For the entire game I was anxious that it would at some point turn to day, but thankfully it didn’t. Nor did it stop raining (poor Nancy had to do all that walking around without an umbrella).
Locations in this game are simply delicious. The mansion, the garden, the grounds, the swamp, the little shop. This game is also lit in a very pleasing manner, I know people tend to complain about it being too dark, but in my opinion it was just right. I really felt like I was in a poorly lit house in the middle of nowhere.
I also loved the puzzles in this one! I managed to do most of them on my own, and only once-twice opened the guide. I did use hints extensively, but since they are built in-game I don’t count them. They were also pretty helpful, so I’m glad I didn’t have to break the immersion by opening walkthroughs.
Even those puzzles that gave me trouble, were still really enjoyable. Like the one with the tombstones. I had to read through that book with dead people 9-10 times out loud, and walk back and forth between cemetery and the house like a 100 times. At one point it became really funny, because I just imagined if this situation was real, and Henry was just sitting there, moping, while I, a total stranger, was vigorously walking back and forth again and again behind his back, like a complete and total maniac. And he didn’t even ask me a single question!
Speaking of Henry! What a guy! 10/10 ND boy.
I actually loved all the characters, and the fact that there were so few. I really felt like I got familiar with them, especially since they were evenly divided between Bess and Nancy. Made the game feel really intimate. The dialogue was a big factor in that too, I really liked how it felt grounded, despite the situation at hand.
And how I adore Bess’s side of the story. I absolutely love how it juxtaposes with Nancy’s, feels very sitcom-like. I loved the complete mayhem that Bess was creating in Zeke’s shop (shop itself was also excellent). While solving the Rube Goldberg machine I had a similar experience to the prior one in the mansion. I must’ve fired the sequence around 50 times, and the whole time Zeke’s just… there… minding his business. What a king.
At some point the continuation puzzle became so ridiculous that I recorded it and sent to my friend out of context. It looked absolutely diabolical. But I still loved it! That’s how strong the immersion was for me. It didn’t feel like I was clicking on objects in computer game, it felt like I was Bess, creating a distraction for Zeke, so that I can help my ridiculous friend Nancy with her ridiculous job.
And here was another place where the dialogue stood out to me. While on the phone with each other, Bess and Nancy really felt like close friends solving a case together. Jokes landed too. There was one that caught me off guard, when Bess (but really me) opens the door that says “DO NOT OPEN” and an alarm goes off, and I fail the game. But, before the game reloads, we get a cut scene with the girls talking on the phone and Bess makes a comment about how “at least she’s going to ask one of the firefighters out”. Like, GIRL, there’s an inheritance fraud possibly going on!! But it genuinely made me laugh, and I loved that moment.
I also loved the over-the-top ridiculousness of Bruno’s puzzles, primarily, because they didn’t break the immersion. They managed to be over the top in a very believable way. Like yeah, of course a filthy rich eccentric would spend his money buying exotic animals, custom-ordering prosthetic eyes and filling up his house with novelty game-machines. I totally believe it. But the game doesn’t stop there. Exotic animal must be an octave-sensitive spider, prosthetic eyes must all be crazy-colored, and games have to be some of the most unappealing, by regular arcade goers’ standards! For eccentric points I suppose.
(For comparison, I’ve recently played Curse of the Blackmoor Manor, and while I loved the puzzles, they didn’t quite manage to not break the boundaries of reality, iykyk)
What I’m trying to say, is that I want to live in this game. I want to either live in it or be able to experience it anew all over again.
All the elements formed a singular, coherent story. It really felt like an episodic adventure. A feeling that was greatly helped by the fact, that, in-game, this only lasts a single night. All the bits and pieces of information felt like they could’ve been gathered in the course of one night. The plot didn’t get derailed and pulled in various directions. Game felt really focused and, in turn, made me focus on it. I didn’t feel like I was wasting my time been invested in this story, because even if the story didn’t pay off in the end, it still gripped me, and made this experience worthwhile.
I could honestly spend an entire day singing its praises, and talking about every little detail, but you HAVE to try it on your own (maybe even on Halloween, but I played it in July so no pressure). Just writing this made me want to play it again, a feeling I don’t get with most ND games, since I already know the ending. But that’s just a testament to how good CRY is!!! I want to experience it just for the atmosphere of being in it. What a great memory it is!
10/10 and I didn’t even need to factor in the mystery.
I want to like this one so much, and it is fun and does have a lot of good moments, but it's just a little slow throughout. It feels like every puzzle and plot point takes forever to get to. A lot of wandering around trying to trigger the next thing. The setting is fun though and the characters are great.
One more mistery solved. Case done. Interesting. Fascinating. Really a great deep story. :-) Best of best.
By far one of my favorite Nancy Drew games. Not a lot of characters, but very good ones. Perfect creepy setting and I love how there are several video elements to the story. A lot of puzzles, moderately difficult. You also get to play as Bess for a short few times. 10/10 for sure.
Nostalgic and the puzzles are as fun as they used to be! I had to look up a few more hints (senior detective), but didn't ruin the fun.
needs some beignets
Great Mystery Game! Sadly, not alot of exploring around New Orleans, very focused on the 2 main places, but still fun! The Glass Eyes are a riot! Ive played every game in this series, and while this is not top10, its still a solid game, for an easy play thru.
I love this game. It is one of my favorites from not only my childhood but also as an adult! It's dark, rainy, spooky AND creepy! I love these types of games. There is a good mystery with a lot of fun and challenging puzzles.
Henry Bolet.

Played with my friend for nostalgias sake and it was really fun! the setting was creppy but there was also a lot of humour in it (nancy is a weirdo as always). most of the games were really fun, but like most of these games there are a couple that are annoyingly hard. in my opinion def worth the purchase
It is a terrible nonsense game
10/10
Bernie the alligator, I love you. This game... eh... not so much.
henry bolet.
Pros:
- Great story
- Loooots of puzzles
- Challenging!
- Good controls in comparison to some other ND games
- Notebook with tasks
- Switch between Nancy and Bess
- Quite Long! You get lots of game for your money
- For those who likes dark gloomy atmosphere
- Iguana <3
Cons:
- Going back and forth is tedious sometimes
- Some puzzles are confusing - like the one with the clues on the graves
I loved the puzzles and enjoyed the travel, but man was walking back and forth from the cemetery rough!
Love this series!
Nancy Drew: Legend of the Crystal Skull is a great play! One of the spookier games in the HER ND series. This mystery takes place on a dark, stormy night in an old house with an expansive system of crypts in the backyard.
There are puzzles galore in this installment. Some of them are a bit tricky, while others resolve in a few moves. The story is interesting enough, and the characters are pretty likable. It's fun to switch to Bess' perspective for a change of scenery.
For an immersive experience, play this one curled up in the dark, preferably while it's raining; it really draws you into the atmosphere of the game.
I love you, henry bolet
Henry, my beloved, is the best part of this game. Second best is a cute iguana you can dress up. Third best is Bernie. Fourth is never-ending rain and gloom. But there are moments when the game felt tedious and a little monotonous. I wish we didn't have to share a spotlight with Bess and instead had more people to interact with.
Its not an easy mystery game. Lot of fun
A solid Nancy Drew game. Smaller world to explore than other ND entries, primarily confined to the mansion and the quirky shop. I do enjoy the presence of Beth and George. This is definitely a cozier game, since its always dark outside and raining. Characters are solid and the puzzles are on the harder side.
Great game!
chill and fun
Excelente juego de puzoles y acertijos.
Puzzles are quality and creative. I don't feel as "stuck" as I have in many other Nancy Drew games, it is all flowing together well.
Love this game! I am a huge ND fan and this is one of my favorites. I love the characters, the ambiance, the spooky setting and plot! I would recommend this to anyone that likes the ND games that hasnt played this one yet.
henry bolet jr is so yummy yum yummy
senior mode offers a good level of puzzle difficulty with enough in-game clues for you to figure it out without needing to look online for help. interesting story, funny characters and an overall spooky atmosphere that is well done in this game.
i think the only part that did feel very strange is the timeframe in which the game takes place. otherwise a reasonable amount of time to get through all the puzzles.
also henry bolet my beloved <3 still just as charming as when i first met him in 2007
its a really fun game that has so much to offer. i play it all the time and i recommended it to all of my friends and they love it too! it is a great wholesome game that is perfect for anyone who wants something fun to do on a lazy day.
Out of all the Nancy Drew games this definitely makes the top 5 list. The New Orleans vibe is really well done and the characters and story are great too. I liked the puzzles and especially liked collecting all the eyes!
Plus the cinematics were spooky and fun too in my opinion. Definitely a must have in your Nancy Drew collection!
Game will not load without glitching out within minutes
i love nancy drew games, but my only complain is the skeeball puzzle of this game, it can get tedious. but the other puzzles are awesome!!
It was better than I remembered it from my first playthrough
loved this gamed in the beginning, but uhhhh bess deserved better. iggy is the best thing in this game
I love all the Nancy Drew games, this one particularly has a great atmosphere!
Legend of the Crystal Skull is a great entry in the Nancy Drew game series that provides a spooky atmosphere as well as interesting puzzles. I really enjoyed the rainy ambiance of this title and the myriad of eye-related puzzles throughout the game. I would encourage every ND fan to check this title out!
10/10 loved this one. it was raining the whole time so i liked that a lot. the puzzles were hard & challenging so i cheesed a few times but you can't win them all. but really this was my favorite nd game so far. it was so poggers i hope there are more like it in the future.
Every Nancy Drew game has intriguing characters and fun puzzles! I can play them over and over and never get tired of them!
If you're looking for a good place to start in the nancy drew game series this one is one of my favorites. it's really funny and has that "this is a nancy drew game" aura that these games have.
I love the Nancy Drew Series overall, but this one was just a miss. The puzzles are repetitive without much to explore or uncover. Unless you are trying to play all of them, I would pass on this one.
This one is very puzzle heavy and some of the puzzles are real head-scratchers - I freely admit to checking a guide on few occasions. But the part where you have to go back between the manor to check a book of deceased people and cementary to find the next clue was just plain padding. Still, the game for the most part was very fun. The mystery itself was engaging and the game oozed creepy atmosphere.
8/10
i like henry bolet
Too many puzzles with dumb solutions. Basically no plot, just mini games. Not a lot of character interactions or scenery! Not the typical Nancy experience.
The story was good but some of the puzzles (like the one with the cabinet of eyes or the book with all the names) were unclear and I had to get help. In addition, I think the wasps game was unnecessarily hard.
Overall, it was a good experience.
One of the best of the series. This one takes place all in one rainy evening, and as Nancy you're investigating in a dark old house in New Orleans. It's set just ahead of Mardi Gras, but it's a good game to play around Halloween, as well. The house, the cemetery behind it, the relentless rain... it's an old-fashioned creepy atmosphere, without straying into anything disturbing. (Think Goosebumps, not Saw.)
It's classic HeR Interactive - point-and-click, linear mystery story, interesting characters, good puzzles and visuals.
Like the rest of the series, it's intended for young teens but is fun for any age, as long as you're looking for a light mystery with fun puzzles and no gore.
Takes maybe 10-15 hours to play first time through without a walkthrough, and 5 or 6 hours any time you want to replay it.
Loved this one! It's an improved version of some of the older titles in the series that turned me into a fan, like Royal Tower and Haunted Mansion. Tons of puzzles, just right amount of minigames, impeccable atmosphere, fantastic voice acting, Easter eggs, reoccurring characters (one of my favorites!), truly helpful hints from Ned, AND you get to play as Bess! A new favorite for this ND veteran.
Great ND game! Lots of good puzzles in this one. One of my favorites.
The Haunting Castle of Malloy
It is a great game for those starting out, there is one difficult puzzle however its not bad.
Great game
It's a fun game to relax with especially when it's rainy. The puzzles are just challenging enough which allows the game to still fall under the relaxing category. I do wish it had a bit more character interaction and development like other Nancy Drew games, but overall a solid game.
HENRY LET ME BE YOUR SUMMER OH GOD OH BOY OH BOY PLEASEISWEAR I CAN BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely in my top ten NC games.
Fun game. Lots of puzzles. Like working with Bess.
Spooky!
fun game with thrilling insightful puzzles along the way. If you want a mystery boy are you in for a hoot!
I'm playing my way through all of the ND games, and I suspect most people reading this review are too, regardless of reviews! But here are my thoughts anyway.
a solid addition to the ND lineup! very atmospheric, but had some bits that just did not wrap up neatly at the end lol. really enjoyed some of the puzzles in this one, very unique as always!
It's a Nancy Drew--I upvote
fun to solve love the music
I really enjoyed this game. I'm not a big gamer and this game was relatively easy to follow. the story was interesting and fun.
One of my favorite Nancy Drew games and I've played a lot of them!
Hands down my top pick for ND games. This game has the best puzzles and the right amount. The scavenger hunt is probably one of the most unique and interesting pieces I've experienced out of any ND game. The setting is great, I like that you can swap back and forth with Bess, the characters is interesting. Not sure I have any complaint with this one. Out of all the ND games, this one is by far my most recommended.
I've been on a ND replay binge lately. I played this after Phantom of Venice, which actually was released after Crystal Skull, so I'm able to make a fair comparison. Between the two, Phantom of Venice is way better, hands down. I would give it 5/5 stars. For the Crystal Skull, I can give only 3 stars. Although there are some logical but easy-to-hard solvable puzzles, such as the wooden balls and laser play kit at the beginning, a couple big ones are just way out there. Case in point: You, as Bess (you switch between Nancy and Bess to complete tasks) have to arrange the items on the curio store shelves to create a domino effect of reactions. I will not spoil it, but the object next to the weighing scale to react the way it did makes no sense. Parts of the octopus cabinet puzzle was also a reach--finding words by combining the last letter with the next word and the first letter of the next? Ugh.
There was also a tedious to-and-fro-ing between the cemetry and the logbook in the house. Some areas were so dark, you had to squint. Don't take the number of hours I played as a ballpark figure of how long you can solve the case. I left the game on for hours as I did other stuff. So would I recommend this? Only if you're ok having to look up hints/walkthroughs more than a few times. Still this is better than other ND games, the newer ones, for example.
Puzzlicious
I love the older Nancy drew games, so nice to play them thur steam on a new laptop.
Super fun point and click mystery game. I loved the setting and I found the puzzles and clues just challenging enough! Highly recommend!
Fun puzzles and interessting story. If you have a night off and are looking for mystery, this is your game.
It's a little old, so it doesn't support 'modern' resolutions, but it didn't bother me at all.
Also, the voice acting in these games is awesome
Very fun and entertaining game c:
love all the nancy drew games!!
A nostalgic game :)
spooky and eerie, the best Nancy drew to come out of New Orleans! in all seriousness though, very good story, great puzzles, and a good back and forth between Nancy and Bess character use. Highly recommend!
My personal favorite of the Nancy Drew games. The aesthetic, the vibe, the story, the puzzles, are all really great and they tie well to each other. Some of the puzzles might be a bit obtuse at first, but once you get how it works it's fun. Playing as Bess is also a great addition and even adds more to the story as well. Really love everything about this entry.
This is the first Nancy Drew game I've played. I would have preferred more plot and fewer puzzles, but the plot and characters that it had were solid (including a kooky professor Nancy has to call). Some of the puzzles are a bit tough. For the most part, though, they're reasonable; I only had to resort to a walkthrough a couple of times. The game runs fine on Windows 10. I would recommend Legend of the Crystal Skull and will be checking out some of the other Nancy Drew games!
henry bolet kept me going
I've played a few of the Nancy Drew games so far, some newer than this one and some older, but this one is still my favorite! Some of the other games, like Sea of Darkness, have more compelling characters; some, like Thornton Hall, have better visuals; and some, like Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, have puzzles just as memorable as this one. But! Of the few Nancy Drew Games I've played, this one has the best balance of all the features I look for. It's visually spooky, the characters are solid, the puzzles are tough but intriguing, and the plot is cohesive and flows nicely. As an added bonus, this game lets you play as Bess and have a nice bowl of gumbo! If you like lightly creepy aesthetics, puzzles, and exploration, I HIGHLY recommend this game!
Great game, fun setting, awesome atmosphere. You are literally walking around a graveyard in New Orleans in the rain (which is good, considering the most annoying puzzle has you walking a lot). Just when you start to feel claustrophobic, you get to play as Bess which is fun. Only down side is Ned is on hints, which is fine if you're a Ned fan. The characters are quirky, annoyances become humorous (even that horrible laptop-grabbing transition scene that takes forever). Fun fun fun puzzles and twists!
is good and hard
bruh im so stuck on this game but its VERY addicting, there certain things you have to do that dont directly make sense so theres that but its overall v good and whatnot!
The graveyard puzzle is very long but if you like mystery than you will enjoy this game. Just follow what the game says and turn off the lights when playing this game.
To start off why would anyone go on vacation with Nancy, it's bizarre to me that Bess did not assume they would be solving a mystery while in New Orleans. I like the trade off between Nancy and Bess I really felt like I got to know Bess better which I liked a lot. The setting was awesome, New Orleans seems like a no brainer for Nancy to investigate something a little kooky. The puzzles were pretty good, the difference in difficulty among them was a little stark but not too bad. A couple of the puzzles were tedious though
especially the tombstone puzzle. I swear my eyes were glossing over words the rest of the day because they were tired of reading those names
It was a good entry, not particularly memorable if it wasn't in New Orleans especially with its ehh culpret reveal but I had a good time nonetheless.

This was a great game! The location was interesting and the spooky ambiance was so, I felt like there are alot of dark locations so you may need to turn up your screen's brightness. I liked in inside and outside locations. The maps did not feel at all limiting.
