A pretty short and fun experience played from the limited perspective of a person stuck in their room. You assist the person who can go outside as much as you can, and you piece the puzzle together yourself. My only gripe is that you can't adjust the look sensitivity on your mouse and I wasn't able to get my Xbox controller to work.

Ahem. This is a really, really good and interesting game about fascism. I highly rec it.

The Flower Collectors is an interesting take on the Rear Window premise -- you play as Jorge, an ex-cop who is confined to a wheelchair in post-Franco Spain and you witness a strange murder from your balcony. That same night, a woman named Melinda knocks on the door of your apartment and begs you to hide her, though what she's running from isn't immediately clear. After letting her stay the night in your apartment, she tells you she's a journalist who was supposed to get some kind of intel from the murdered man. From your perch on your balcony, you investigate the crime, helped by Melinda, who can go speak with people and interact with things in the world below.

Them game takes place just after Franco's death, in a period where restoring Spain to democracy is anything but certain. The extremely interesting choice it makes is to have the protagonist not be Melinda -- Jorge is an ex-cop who did and believed terrible things under the autocratic regime, and the story is very much about him moving from seeing Melinda as a dangerous extremist to starting to reckon with the reality of the harm he caused. The game's ability to be empathetic to Jorge while making it clear that what he and people like him did wasn't okay was impressive; it managed to make Jorge feel like a person and not just like, the worst Redditor.

I think the choice to make Jorge disabled is a big part of this. For the first time in his life, he's an outsider in his own society -- he can't leave his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ apartment because the elevator doesn't work right, he feels unmanned and useless, and buys his own propaganda about the worthlessness of the disabled. His character arc about realizing the Nationalists are wrong is tied tightly to realizing his disability doesn't disqualify him from living a full life. I just... really liked the way the game portrays the impact of sudden disability. It mapped so well onto my own experiences and was clearly very carefully and meaningfully written.

I think the game asks some hard questions about what it means to deprogram a fascist, because the truth is that Jorge's ability to reckon with himself can only happen because he's made an outsider. If he hadn't been injured, he would probably have been outside helping the cops beat up a homeless guy. On the other hand though, the game posits truth and community as a form of resistance -- Jorge's heart grew three sizes that day both because of his experiences, but also because of the relationships he starts to form with Melinda and people like Dona Anna, and you see him slowly but surely starting to care about the murdered man as more than just a corpse. Fascism can only be maintained by disconnection and lies. The journalist being the foil of the solider-cop is a key part of this as well.

I just found this game weirdly... cathartic? I can't think of any other word for it, as a Minnesotan it made me feel better, made the burden of everything feel a bit lighter. It was just really good and affecting and I really loved it. I continue to not understand why furries make the best games but I'm beyond questioning it at this point. From here on out I consider furry art to be a reason to buy a game lol.

I haven't completed this game yet, but here are my thoughts thus far. Positives: love the storyline and the brooding main character. I appreciate the back story and feel connected to what is happening. Negatives: cannot reccomend for someone with motion sickness like me! I realllyyy struggle to play unfortunately, fighting nausea all the way. In connection with this, WHY can you not save the game?! This is a horrible decision and left me in a tricky spot, when I was at my limit and felt like I was going to throw up from the motion sickness due to the games constant movement, I couldn't quit or I would lose my progress for the chapter and I do not have any desire to have to replay. I left my laptop running with the game on for over an hour while my nausea passed, laptop getting increasingly hot. When I was ready to face it again I felt a deep resentment and desperation for the chapter to be over. Now that I am finally released, I feel I don't personally want to pick it back up again, maybe not ever. I know these are personal gripes which is why I have said YES, I reccomend this game, but it's just not for me!

This game is a fantastic example of how a good heart and central design ethos can help a story shine through despite severely limited surface-level constraints.

The Flower Collectors does not look incredible, visually. I am a big sucker for games/movies that use animal characters in otherwise completely realistic and grounded settings. Still, the character designs and animations in this title are extremely limited. They are definitely stylized; it is not that the look is not distinctive. It is clear, though that the visual presentation, while quaint, is not the main draw here.

Despite all of that, I found this game to be an absolute delight and a real diamond in the rough. Like many good narrative adventure games, I came away from it having learned a little something about history and a different part of the world, and that is extremely satisfying. The themes that it deals with are extremely relevant (almost shockingly so) today.

Like the graphics, the gameplay is also fairly limited; you never leave your apartment. The entirety of the game consists of you rolling around your tiny studio flat and its balcony, snooping on the activity on your surrounding block and making some timed choices on where to look and what to say. While that may not sound incredibly exciting, I found it a refreshingly novel way to tell an excellent story about change, revolution, and the courage to do the right thing.

One of my firmest held beliefs in game design is that games (or really any kind of art, really) are more interesting when they can transport the player and make them feel something while working within strict constraints. It is why I find so many big and splashy triple-A titles with massive maps and possibility spaces to be boring these days.

Games like The Flower Collectors pull from a very limited cupboard of ingredients. Simple graphics. Simple animations. Only a few voiced characters. A tiny map and limited gameplay options. And yet it still manages to create a memorable and affecting experience. That is far more impressive to me than any multi-million dollar title that looks expensive and feels soulless.

The one word of caution that I would have is about the length; everyone needs to make their own cost/value judgment on their game purchase decisions, but I am not sure that I would have called this a great value at the full price of $14.99. Grabbing it for $6 on sale felt perfect for its nearly 4-hour runtime.

Rough around the edges, but still manages to execute well enough on its core premise and gameplay loop.

Yeah, the animations are rigid, blend trees and a few extra animations would have gone along way to increasing immersion, but the core idea and story of the game is what made it enjoyable.

Starting off, I was not a fan of the protagonist, they did a decent job selling him as a grumpy ex-cop who worked under a dictator right wing police force. It would have been nice to have a bit more time, or something more to further show his perception change throughout the years, but within the chapters they did a decent enough job.

Having the game spent on the balcony looking over the street is a premise I have enjoyed in other titles. A few times however I was a bit disappointed; for example, it would ask the player to guide a character through the street avoiding the police. I would tell them when the coast was clear. As they were moving from point A to B, the police would turn around and the character would CLEARLY walk in front of the police. These faux stealth parts were a bit of a bummer.

The tension at moments were good. Unravelling the mystery was engaging, albeit completely predictable from the start as to whodunit. I do wish, they were a little less n the nose about that, but in any case for a short 2.5 hour long game, I enjoyed my time on this old mans balcony.

Pretty enjoyable story, though I do wish it was a bit less linear. Quite short, but its enjoyable while it lasts and doesn't wear out its welcome. Try out the demo and if you're unsure, pick it up on sale. Generally, I'd recommend it though.

Original juego que te entretendrá durante un rato. El hecho de estar ambientado en el franquismo y en España, le da un punto "local" interesante, pero más en trasfondo, ya que la ambientación es muy genérica y con el uso de animales como personajes, podría ser cualquier otro lugar. Muy buena banda sonora, trama interesante con diferentes historias entremezcladas y mecánica sencilla. No es un juego nada complicado, y es casi más una aventura narrativa que un juego de puzzles. Pero es agradable de jugar. Eso sí, si eres completista, lo mismo algún logro se te atasca ya que no hay apenas ninguna pista de cómo sacar algunos o saber qué te estás perdiendo en la investigación.

This game took me 3 hours to finish it i didn't 100% the game since didn't have much time but i must say if you like games with anthroanimals this game perfect for you i highly recommend getting it while its on sale or when its on sale i got it on winter sale 2024 and im so happy i got it amazing story very good visual style i really like that you are ex cop spying on your neighbours,people to then witness murder alr i wont spoil more.

Gameplay: 8/10 could be better i had some issues with mouse like it was lagging my mouse little bit.

Я давно присматривался к этой игре. По заявленному синопсису мне она представлялась условным повторением фильма "Окно во двор", но с другим культурным колоритом, а именно Испании под конец эпохи правления Франко. Но на деле мы получаем не триллер и даже не детектив, а обычную и приевшеюся сейчас политическую агитку, которая даже со своей задачей не может справиться как следует, в силу очевидного небольшого бюджета, странных геймдизайнерских решений и очень наивного представления о событиях минувших дней, будто всё что у них было - это даже не статья из Вики, а её сокращённый вариант.

Начну с того, что за всё прохождение я так и не увидел хотя бы намёка на оригинальные идеи в плане сюжета и повествования. Всё очень и очень банально, скучно, неинтересно и самое главное топорно. Вот произошло убийство - бац! Внезапно, нам нужно помочь разобраться юной журналистке что же произошло, при этом на площади шныряют злые копы и что вы думаете? По замыслу, мы должны быть на стороже, действовать аккуратно, а в итоге просто носимся взад вперед прямо перед их носом и никто из нпс никак не реагирует на наши действия. Бюджета не хватило даже на анимации, из-за чего пропадает вся иммерсивность. Ну невозможно прочувствовать ситуацию, когда нпс двигаются как роботы и врезаются в стены, а всё взаимодействие в игре сводится к верчению биноклем и указыванию на хитмарки, которые ещё нужно отыскать в округе. Видны они, при этом, только через увелечение (которое, к слову, даже не могли сделать нажатием, а не зажатием, кнопки).
Из-за этих ограничений движка, слабый сценарий становится ещё заметнее, потому что ни геймплей, ни атмосфера не отвлекают тебя настолько, чтобы тебе не казалось, что ты смотришь на дешевый бульварный роман.

Вот только посыл тут не на три копейки, а очень грозный и серьезный, описывающий ужасные события того времени, вот только во-первых у нас тут антропоморфные персонажи, из-за которых реальные имена, локации и события смотрят глупо и неуместно, а во-вторых всё показано ну ооооочень поверхностно, серьезно! Неужели авторы думали, что если пару раз нам скажут какие власти плохие и "бла-бла" мы тут же поймем и разберемся в вопросе диктатуры Франко в Испании, которая длилась больше 30-ти лет? Если уж вы и пытаетесь лезть в серьезные и сложные темы, то нужно это делать обдуманно и как следует. А не пихая наибанальнейший сюжет и не завлекая очевидными отсылками к известному фильму. Это буквально листовка, только в виде игры, вот хорошее сравнение.

Сам геймплей очень скудный и однокнопочный, ошибиться тут тоже невозможно, выборы если и влияют на что-то, то совсем чуть-чуть. А всё время прохождения мы вынуждены помогать юной анархистке, которая и сама не понимает что творит, а мы и помешать не поможем, но при этом и помогаем как-то очень по-дурацки.
Вообще, так как в игре два с половиной персонажа за всю игру, то догадаться кто с кем и как повязан не составит труда, детективной составляющей здесь вообще нет и, скорее всего, не предвиделось. Так, присыпали лёгким нуаром и хватит, авось прокатит.

По итогу, мне видится, что этот проект был задуман лишь ради одной цели - высказаться на очень сложную тему в рамках компьютерных игр. Вот только, задумка на миллион, а реализация на три копейки. Во всех смыслах слова. Поэтому, купив её просто знайте - вы не получите хорошего и интересного детектива, у авторов не получается нагнетать саспенс, здесь не будет разнообразного и активного геймплея и отсутствует вариативность. А показывать целую эпоху страны путем посредственной и короткой игры, с очень наивными представлениями о ней, на мой взгляд, было просто плохой идеей.

Совсем небольшая (на три часа) игра про любопытный исторический момент в Испании, а точнее после падения режима Франко.
Главный плюс игры, что рассказывая о трагических событиях в Барселоне, начинаешь проводить параллели с текущим положением дел в мире.
Как в рамках одного двора на метафорах показать политическую грязь, полицейщину и адекватных людей, в нашем случае животных.
Геймплей прост - диалоги и наблюдение за происходящим через бинокль\камеру, цветовая гамма особенно ночью просто прекрасно, передает дух Барселоны.
Отмечу так же озвучку, очень подходит персонажам.
Единственный минус - у меня почему-то лишь одна ачивка, даже за прохождение не дали)

Никогда не окунался в историю Испании 20 века,кто бы мог подумать что в такой солнечной стране тоже была автократия со всеми присущими режиму "развлечениями": репрессиями интеллигенции,облавы на неугодных режиму,запреты геев и тп.
Итак,мы бывший полицейский,в инвалидной коляске,оказавшийся там после несчастного случая.На дворе 1975 год,Испания,осуществляется плавный переход к демократии после смерти диктатора Франсиско Франко. Хорке,главный герой,ведет скучный образ жизни,перемещаясь на коляске по квартире,наблюдая за соседями из бинокля и предается воспоминаниям о службе,постоянно закидываясь таблетками обезбола.В одну ночь на площади перед его балконом происходит убийство и к нему в квартиру влетает журналистка,скрываясь от некого преследователя.Так как делать главному герою нечего,кроме как рассматривать людей в бинокль,он начинает расследование убийства с юной писакой.
Геймплей незамысловатый:следи,фоткай,сопоставляй.А вот история пробирает.По сути,рассказ идет про переосмысления человеком его поступков,идеалов.На сегодняшний день очень актуально,делая какие то ужасы ради карьеры,убеждений,социального положения,взглянув на сотворенные тобой деяния спустя годы,не станешь ли ты противен
самому себе?История несомненно подана с либеральной точки зрения,но все же поднимает опять этот вопрос,что лучше порядок или свобода?И я никогда не понимал,и не понимаю людей,которые выбирают порядок,но их много.В данной игре закончится все хорошо,и в Испании в итоге придут к демократии,а вот чем закончится наша история?Хочется верить,что так же хорошо.
Для меня 9 баллов за освещение такой темы,в необычном,лично для меня,историческом сеттинге .Наверно даже почитаю об этом Франсиско Франко.

The setting is very promising, but the game mechanics and dialogues are not up to the task, in my opinion.

This is a detective game inspired by Firewatch. So I was hoping for something similar to Her Story (investigation), Firewatch or other narrative games.

However, the investigation aspect is very frustrating because of limiting game mechanics. It's incredibly railroady. Every tiny action has to be undertaken in a pre-decided order. Dialogue starts at decided times, and does not merge with action smoothly as in Firewatch. You can't take a picture while chatting : you go through conversation, then take a required picture when the game prompts you to. Initiatives are not rewarded, and you are not free to go through investigation in the order you would like. The invisible hand of the developer is always here, in the form of a constant to-do list on the screen... which breaks immersion for me. (deviations from the to-do list, in nature or order, are not allowed). Some tasks are also on a timer for no apparent reason, although the rest of the game is not in real time. More immersion-breaking.

For an investigative game, it also assumes its players are dumb. Assembling the evidence and coming to conclusions is guided to the point you do not need to think whatsoever. Assembling evidence is done on a big board. There are empty slots, labelled with easy questions, for example "what does the victim look like ?". The player has to pick a picture of the victim and stick it there, that's it. If the wrong photograph is chosen, the game will not let you stick it, so the player can win by trial and error and basic reading ability.

Finally, the narrative aspect is not here either, in my opinion... Dialogues are a bit cliché and not very believable. I did not finish the game, but from what I've seen on videos, the ending is generic. I find it disappointing for such an ambitious setting.

The good parts are :

The premise of the game is nothing new in movies but it seemed like an interesting idea for a game. Unfortunately it ended up being closer to a point and click. The story is simple and straight forward. Given the subject matter, it leaves a lot to be desired. This game is meant to be serious and address serious issues, I was having an incredibly hard time taking it seriously solely because of the animations. The animations, out of everything, are what left the worst impression. The animations come across as lazy and unpolished, frequently not matching the situation that’s currently playing out before your eyes. (Ex: the police “punch” a character but the animation is of them stomping. The character getting “punched” just lays down on the ground like Apu spills his tendies)

I would argue that animations are just as important as story and worth the time and money to make them look clean, polished, and at the very least convincing. Clearly, all the animations were taken from Mixamo because I recognize a bunch of them. There were no in-betweens so characters would snap, slide, blend into their next animation. The fingers frequently don’t animate correctly. (Ex: hands go into an “ok” position and they bend back like hot dogs) The devs did not spend enough time on the character movements as the characters are often sliding around during walk and run animations. All of this just really took me out of the experience. It’s hard to connect with what’s happening when you’ve got characters that are over the top animating like the Sims. (Ex: Main big bad villain waving at the bouncer with one leg up like a schoolgirl)

Unfortunately the story and the game play are just ok and are not enough to make me look past the, honestly, comedic animations. I feel like the making of this game was a bit rushed. With more time and dedication to all aspects of development (particularly animation), this could have been a better game.

observing shouldn't feel this draggy and forced, the idea of this game is extremely interesting to me but the execution feels very off. it hovers between relaxed narrative game and suspenseful point-and-click but doesnt really nail either. some portions do not feel very intuitive, but that is definitely subjective, as the intention of the game is probably more for the player to explore and find out for themselves.

Love this game! I was about to comment how simplistic the game was but then I got the "Rookie" achievement, and that peeked my interest to play it again and get all the stories. I also love how the faschies review-bombed this game, major L-MAO. Anyway, what I hope is for the game to offer Spanish, or maybe Catalan voice-acting? That may resolve some parts of the dialogue that was too cheesy/hammy - I think that's coz of translation issues in the script writing. And, the motions of NPCs are janky a lot of times, but that's a minor issue for me.

I would say this game is worth a play. It's story is really what carries it completely as it's so very passionate about the source material. The game is presented to you through the eyes of a man in a wheelchair looking off his balcony, he is powerless to interact with the world around him. He also is someone that starts almost entirely opposed to the message the game is telling, he is a grumpy annoyed old cop who wants to be left alone and judge people from up above. Even still, with enough evidence and observation he begins to understand and see the world around him. He doesn't fully get everything by the end and has his reservations, but I personally like that part as it shows that maybe for us to spark societal or political change we need to get some people we don't really like onto our side, something I think our current society struggles with understanding as we often like to take the nuclear polarizing option. That is what I liked about the game/story, I would go as far as to say this is the kind of material I'd like to see used to educate children in school. Now what isn't so great is the visual presentation. The character portraits of the townsfolk are pretty ugly, very polygonal but not quite achieving the low-poly look of something like "For the King", the waiter or rabbit character being the worst offenders. The animations and pathfinding are pretty bad, they look like The Sims moving around in the early games. The gameplay is pretty uninspired, just click on the interact points. There are a couple of puzzle-like parts matching evidence but they aren't really puzzles as you have no time limit, no limited tries, and the game tells you if you got any part wrong instantly. Nevertheless, they should be included as-is because they do make sure the player understands the events of the day. It's was good to play, not mind blowing but still very interesting and with many moving parts.

I haven't seen a game tackle this period of history before, nor did I know much about it until now. It makes me want to go and learn more about the post-Franco era. A brilliant game with well-rounded characters. Watching the characters swivel on a dime instead of turning naturally seems a little odd, but once you get past that, it's an interesting little game that would definitely recommend.

The story, voice acting, and overall idea of this game is really special. However, the execution of the game felt a bit underwhelming and weirdly off putting when comparing it to the more polished elements.

Honestly, this is a great game. I finished the playthrough on Nintendo Switch, and purposely went out of my way to buy the PC version for the upped quality. The story is fantastic and really well written. The aspect of you being the detective of an investigation who is wheel-chair-bound, and therefore has to use a 2nd person to do the act of investigating for him (she is the brawn, and he is the brains), is purely astounding and something I have never considered, before. Very unique gameplay. Wish it was longer only because the story was so good that I wish I could reexperience it! Looking forward to the next game you guys make!

In the shadow of Facist General Franco’s death, the nation of Spain began an uneasy transition into democracy. It is the mid 70s and Spain faces its first free election in 40 years. It is during this period that our protagonist, Jorge, lives above a sleepy town square. Jorge is a wheelchair-using, former police officer who spends most days watching and sketching the world around him.

‘The Flower Collectors’ is a narrative heavy detective story with a ‘whodunnit?’ theme. You spend the majority of your time observing the residents around you and trying to piece together what happened, when a man is shot dead in the square below your apartment. It is brought to you by Mipuni Games, the same studio that released the well received ‘The Lion’s Song’ in 2016.

Graphically, The Flower Collectors is fine. The colour palette used is evocative of the setting, the warm oranges dominate and really give you a sense of the Spanish locale. The use of a smaller environment is a nice idea, but it is often let down by the lifelessness of it. NPCs within the square feel static and inanimate, with no real ‘awareness’ of what is happening around them. This is compounded by poor animations that feel almost ‘stock’ and are very exaggerated, bringing to mind the cartoonish animations of The Sims or even Lionhead’s ‘The Movies’.

The game’s characters are anthropomorphic cats, dogs, foxes etc. which suits the cartoon style the game has gone for, but much like the scenery around them, they are fairly basic models; with no emotion conveyed. This isn’t helped by the dialogue system in place, whilst the voice acting stands out as well acted, the game’s delivery of it is lacking. The omission of auto scroll dialogue makes sentences feel disjointed from one another and serves only to break immersion. The switch between English and Spanish pronunciations is strange too; an option to experience this in the native tongue would have been welcome.

These issues with characters really undermine the game’s greatest asset, its story. Whilst this is no game changing tale, and at times almost excruitantly generic, it is mostly a well delivered and interesting affair. The game handles exposition well enough, with the usual trope of investigating items and objects. These fill in tidbits of information and the characters you meet/observe are likable enough; although sometimes it feels like the emotional connection to them was born from how you expect them to react to situations rather than how they are actually reacting within the game itself. Sadly the themes of oppression and history of the era are largely an unexplored backdrop to the game’s events and whilst they help set up the narrative, it feels like a missed opportunity to learn more about this important part of Spain’s modern history.

The main villain of this piece is not a well crafted antagonist. but the game mechanics themselves. Often the slow and boring sequences eliminate any pacing or tension the story has built. Game play sequences amount to little more than point cursor at X, for an arbitrary amount of time. You are tasked with investigating the world’s characters by the means of sketches, and later photography. These mechanics are woefully thin, and could have been expanded upon to give you a feeling of being more involved. These are brought together at the end of chapters on a noticeboard, where you have to piece together your findings. These sequences serve as a good way to recap events and keep you on track with the story. The chapters themselves are handled poorly however. Often ending with a ‘oh I’m tired’ sequence, followed by a fade to black. This feels lazy and frustrating; especially when it happens around a story revelation that has you motivated to learn more.

This is a theme that runs through the game unfortunately. How the story is presented is often at odds with how you want to play. You may notice something in the environment that is interesting, but there is no reward for doing so. A broken window springs to mind, which stands out and could have been interesting, considering the mystery aspect of the game, but it isn’t even given a line of dialogue and is never explored later on. You often find yourself having to guide a character into a building, avoiding security. There are no choices or player freedom as to how to do this and the glaringly obvious distraction technique is not used until later on when the story decides it should be used; it feels restrictive. Timed sequences also feel arbitrary with little feedback as to how failure (almost impossible) might be handled, with poorly used music cues used to inject a little slice of contrived tension.The lack of incidental happenings in the environment and lifeless characters, make these sequences dull and forgettable; with little to no challenge. For a game based around observing people, observing them simply isn’t very fun.

The story progresses and wraps up in a satisfying manner, it is pleasing to see how things turn out for characters and there is scope to have further lines of dialogue depending on information/evidence gathered throughout the game. Annoyingly some of the story beats are helped along by frankly ridiculous realisations from characters, however. A character’s identification is clearly featured on a newspaper a fair while before the character notices, and the game’s later macguffin is handled very poorly are two stand outs. It is frustrating to realise things far sooner than the characters do, with no reasonable explanation as to why. One of these realisations is the main character’s past history, a huge part of the story itself, with absolutely no explanation as to why he wouldn’t have remembered it sooner or even need to remember it at all. Maybe if the game’s POV character had been explored in greater detail, perhaps to explain this strange omission from his memory, you could look past this; but it’s not. Sadly Jorge amounts to little more than a nihilistic ex-cop cliché.

The Flower Collectors is an interesting enough detective adventure game that makes frustrating design choices. A curious little world, let down by poor mechanics, an often stiff and lifeless world filled with immersion breaking audio and visual design. There is a good game to be found here, but it requires a lot of patience to navigate the simplistic and dull gameplay.

The Flower Collectors is a breath of fresh air in the Detective/Puzzle video game genre with a lot of drawbacks.

The game relies a lot on how enthralling the story is, it kinda succeeds a it. The story is interesting but one of the first things I noticed is that character arcs are not well executed, everything seems a little bit rushed and sometimes contradictory, but that doesn't necessarily make the story worst. You can definitely nitpick some things like the constant and sometimes exhausting “progressive” talk throughout the game but the story is very political so it is expected. I didn't enjoy that some things are left unexplained by the end of the game, it doesn't make sense to make a sequel out of the story so I don't know the purpose of leaving details out.

Gameplay could be better, I played on keyboard and mouse and it was rough. Moving was a little bit awkward and slow. Selecting dialogue was also kinda rough but not a major issue. The game does support controller play and I think that may be the way to go. Animations are good for an Indie game, the art style is very interesting and overall great. Voice acting is not very good, it feels awkward at its best and empty at its worst, but it is passable for an Indie game. Some of the animations are kinda janky but not a huge deal, the main thing is that sometimes you have to wait for animations to complete to continue the story and that can be good or bad. The game doesn't require you to do something every single second of gameplay, it makes you observe a lot and that's the point of it. I would describe the whole gameplay as a big cutscene with some actual gameplay in between. Puzzles and problem solving are not challenging but are definitely entertaining.

Now let's address the two huge elephants in the room, the inspiration from “Rear Window” and the fact that the characters are anthropomorphic animals. The inspiration is clear, a man bound to a wheelchair who likes to watch the neighborhood tries to solve a mystery from afar. Do the devs credit Hitchcock? From what I can tell, no. The characters being anthropomorphic animals is something kinda shocking at first but you get over it quickly. Does it take away from the actual story? Kinda, it doesn't make the game worse but the main theme of the game is a very heavy and real subject, it makes it seem less serious. If you believe this game is “furry trash” just because of the anthropomorphic animals, grow up it is a clear stylization decision and nothing else.

Achievement hunting is not very good, you can't 100% this game on your first gameplay. You have to go back and make different decisions to get some achievements and that is definitely boring. The game has little to no replay value and lacks extra content in general.

Overall I would not recommend this game to the casual player even though I really enjoyed it. I think it takes someone to really like story heavy games and be open to some unpolished aspects to enjoy this game. If the game is on sale and you are willing to look over some details and like story driven games, go for it.

The game is beautiful and has an interesting concept. But it forces you to tolerate one of the most annoying and insolent side-characters ever, right from the second act. It seems impossible to proceed beyond that point. There is a fine line between being cute and unconstrained and being just a total a-hole who gets into your life, while you have no gameplay abilities to adequately react to this behavior. Да, AAA-проекты ежегодно заваливают нас графином и прочей «голливудщиной», а вот поиском новых способов нарратива занимается один лишь Кодзима (и наверняка кто-то ещё, кого прямо сейчас я вспомнить не могу). Вот и приходится искать отдушину в «инди-параше», которая за последние годы подарила мне в разы больше эмоций, чем любой популярный блокбастер.

Предыдущий проект студии – point-and-click адвенчуру The Lion Song совсем недавно бесплатно раздавали в EGS, и, надеюсь, кто-то, забрав игру, не оставил её навечно в библиотеке, а всё же запустил и дал квесту шанс. Судя по данным SteamSpy, первым эпизодом Lion Song владеют от 200 000 до 500 000 игроков, а вот The Flower Collectors грустно ютится где-то на самом дне «Стима» со своими 0 ... 20 000 владельцами.

И очень зря, потому что, ну серьёзно: никому ещё не надоели бесконечные, как-под-копирку, протагонисты, лезущие изо всех щелей в каждой игре? The Flower Collectors выгодно отличается от прочих наличием главного героя-инвалида, после несчастного случая потерявшего возможность ходить и передвигающегося на кресле-каталке. И, да, в голове сразу возникает образ некоей претенциозной залупы (наподобие того, чем занимались Tale of Tales), но НЕТ.

Лишившись работы и какого-либо смысла жизни, протагонист занят наблюдением за жизнями других, уютно расположившись на собственном балконе. Место действия: Испания 1977 года, спустя пару лет после окончания режима Франко. И жизнь идёт своим чередом до одной дождливой ночи, когда на центральной площади, аккурат под окнами нашего героя, происходит УБИЙСТВО, после которого в квартиру к протагонисту неистово ломится симпатичная лиса 🦊. Или кошка 🐈, я так и не разобрался.

Да, мне тоже не совсем понятно, с какой целью авторы ударились в фуррятину и заменили всех людей на антропоморфных животных (возможно, чтобы избежать каких-то параллелей с реальными людьми), но хуже от этого игра не стала. Котик, человек, андроид или паукан: выбор действующего лица не играет большой роли, если авторы действительно знают, какую историю хотят рассказать и КАК её можно рассказать.

Собственно, на наблюдении за происходящим вокруг и строится вся игра. Гоняем на коляске по квартире, смотрим в бинокль, иногда сменяя его на фотоаппарат, делаем заметки и пытаемся раскопать правду об убийстве. Максимально простая, но, душевная история о, ха-ха, людях — короче то, что я обычно называю «игра про жизнь».

Иронично, что инди с человеческим лицом в качестве главного героя имеет совсем не человека, а медведя 🐻. Или волка 🐺, я так и не разобрался. Ауф.

✅ Рекомендую: всем, кто не дрочит на графику и кому сюжет, персонажи и повествование важнее игровых механик.

Got stuck right at the beginning of act 2 due to a bug, which is like 5-10 minutes in. Came out strongly political at the onset. Maybe that's for you, but it's not for me. I play games to get away from real life, not to have one persons ideology forced onto me with no agency. I get it, storytelling and all that, but in this case not what I expected. Just wanted a murder mystery. And why furries? I don't see the relevance, especially as it's parodying real life. This takes away from the experience for me also.

Boring game to say the least. It turns out to be political too early in the game which is why I did not find solving the murder mystery at all. Also, the game is too dark and there is no option to tune up the brightness, which was extremely annoying. It also does a poor job representing handicaps where the game refuses you (as an handicap) to leave their own house. I think this is an extremely misleading misconception and would've liked a different reason for the person to stay indoors.

This is a nice little game you can play trough in under 4 hours. I really love the take on it. its very different from other detective games. you have at some points different choice options that will shape the story to an extend.

PROS:

- it has simple graphics and i think it is better because of it.
- you kinda see the stories from other people from a third person view and i really like that. you are not directly involved in them but rather see them unfold before your eyes.
- there is something really appealing about spying on other people in general. learning about them and their releationships with each other.
- the voiceacting is really good.
- the music is good.

CONS:

- sometimes the characters feel stiff but this is nothing really annoying. if you consider the overall graphics then its something you can easy forgive. maybe it ads even more to the charms overall.

- there is not really much to say else. i wished that it was a bit longer with a little bigger plaza and more people but it is just fine as it is now. i really like it overall and i like the idea of spying on people from the balcony with a partner that does the footwork. i hope there would be more games that explore this take in the future. like some other city and different crimes. it could be a really new and interesting take on the detective genre.

This unique game got me hooked. I loved the new detective style. It speaks about fighting for equality in the '70s and how the community looks at 'different' people as something that should be wiped off the earth. You play Jorge, a retired cop who is prisoned in his wheelchair after an incident in the past. One day he witnessed a murder from his balcony, then a young journalist sought his help to hide in his small apartment. Armed only with his binoculars and camera, Jorge decided to help her and watch the townspeople from his balcony, taking photos of evidence to help the young journalist to uncover the secret behind the murder.

There are ten chapters (You'll be able to jump to any of them once you finish the game) the puzzles are only on the detective board, none of them are difficult to figure out. I liked the idea of controlling two people, helping the other characters to sneak around by observing their surroundings. everything the game did is good and enjoyable, although your character is stuck in one place, they made it very interesting.

You can choose how your character responds to some of the conversations, and it does affect your relationship and outcome with the other characters. There are multiple characters to observe and learn their full story, this will change the ending of the game.

The voiceovers are very good, I liked all of them as well as the soundtracks. In the beginning, I didn't like the first-person aspect, but I'm glad it didn't give me any motion sickness as you are most of the time sitting and zooming in and out. I liked the character's design, they are portraying them with animals, they did a good job showing their personalities through their facial expressions.

Bardzo chciałam polubić tę grę. Poprzednia gra studia, The Lion's Song, okazała się być tytułem dość hermetycznym, ale ze względu na olbrzymi ładunek emocjonalny i mądrze poprowadzone wątki, wspominam ją bardziej niż ciepło. Myślę, że The Flower Collectors jest grą łatwiejszą w odbiorze, ale nie porwała mnie w równym stopniu, co TLS.

Mamy tu do czynienia z osadzoną w bardzo konkretnym miejscu i czasie opowiastką kryminalną, której bohaterami są antropomorficzne zwierzęta. Umiejscowienie akcji w Hiszpanii u progu przemian ustrojowych (lata 70. XX wieku) jest decyzją nieszablonową i antyapolityczną, pozwalającą do pewnego stopnia zapoznać się z nieoczywistym dla wielu odbiorców tłem historycznym i dodającą fabule pewnej głębi. I jest to bodajże największa zaleta tej gry, bo sama historia nie jest na tyle zniuansowana, by uznać ją za specjalnie dobrą pod względem obyczajowym czy wystarczająco trzymający w napięciu interaktywny kryminał.

Sama mechanika to w głównej mierze obserwowanie jednej z ulic przez lornetkę lub aparat fotograficzny. Wydarzenia śledzimy z perspektywy poruszającego się na wózku byłego policjanta, dla którego skromny apartament i widok z balkonu są całym dostępnym mikroświatem. Przyznam, że brakowało mi dokładniejszego wejrzenia w przestrzeń osobistą naszego protagonisty, uczynienie z niej dodatkowej bohaterki całej historii pozwoliłoby uwydatnić alienację i problemy zdrowotne bohatera. Rozumiem jednak, że twórcy woleli się skupić na czym innym. Trudniej mi za to zaakceptować nierówny podział na rozdziały, przez co ewentualne powtórki potrafią stanowić znaczną część gry (obliczonej na ok. 3 godziny gameplayu).

Nie mogę nie wspomnieć, że trochę mnie ten tytuł zmęczył. Nie zdążyłam przywiązać się do postaci, o których wiedziałam tak mało, a samo wodzenie wzrokiem po ulicy było średnio ekscytujące. Wybory moralne okazały się zbyt oczywiste, a brak sensownej puenty rozczarował, ale też nie zaskoczył. Słowem, nie czułam, że się bawię. Nie jest to gra jednoznacznie zła i ma swoje walory (muzyka, klimat), ale nie czułabym się do końca dobrze wystawiając jej pozytywną ocenę. Jednoznacznie nie odradzam, ale na ewentualny zakup polecam zaczekać do jakiejś większej promocji.

- The game is very reminiscent of the ‘Blacksad’ comic, adapting our world to an anthropomorphic one where the personality of each character is a nod to the animal it represents.
- The music accompanies really well, even without having any memorable theme.

- The dubbing is in English, mixing some words in a strange way in Spanish (like ‘policías’, or ‘señor J’), happening the same with some written documents.
- The game takes place in only one scenario: the protagonist's small flat and the square and surroundings that he can see from his balcony; this is not necessarily a negative point, especially if we take into account that it tries to adopt films like ‘Rear Window’, ‘The Cabin’ or ‘Last Call’ to the videogame genre.
- Its animations are really poor.
- The gameplay elements are reduced to three sections: puzzle elements (where we must place photographs and drawings in the correct order on a nautical chart as appropriate at the end of the day), stealth moments (literally three moments, where we must guide two characters to get from one point to another on the stage without being detected by other characters: something really simple to achieve and not challenging at all) and moments where we must observe our neighbours to get plot details or different clues.
- The story is quite interesting, but the further we get into it and the more we tie up loose ends, the less interesting it becomes.
- It's only 2.5-3 hours long, so buying this game off sale is not an option.

The Flower Collectors is a videogame in which unfortunately the low budget is noticeable, a kind of failed videogame; it is an interactive adventure that starts from a great idea and that a priori is interesting, but it falls halfway. Why do I recommend it, despite all its negative points? Because the game managed to hook me from the beginning to the end: it is a very slow-paced and somewhat predictable game, but I played through it straight through, without pausing, and that is something I value very positively. Besides, I really liked the two main characters, although I regret that it didn't go deeper into them or the neighbours in the neighbourhood.

5,5/10.
It's a pity that The Flower Collectors didn't have a bigger budget. If it had, it is certain that this work would have achieved a more rounded result. As a videogame, it has a lot of potential, but it's a pity that only the two main characters are so developed, or that it doesn't have better character animations to convey something more than awkwardness and intentions to the player.

It's a pretty neat detective game in which a wheelchair-bound retired cop assists an anarchist journalist in solving the murder of her informant. Gameplay consists of spying on people from a balcony through a pair of binoculars or a camera, taking photos, and then posting your drawings and photographs on a board to aid in your deductions. Graphics are rather simple, with characters being all sorts of anthropomorphic animals for some reason. Especially praiseworthy is the quality of voice acting and incidental music. I was really impressed by those.

What didn't impress me, however, were the shoehorned LGBTQ elements that bring absolutely nothing to the story and they are so shallow as to be completely unnecessary. And for this reason alone this is a thumbs down from me.

TFC has an interesting plot, but the gameplay and actual meat of the story was a bit lackluster to me. as previous reviews mentioned, there is a lot of potential that could've been dived into for this game, and I do agree that it felt disappointing to have the main character say he didn't remember what he did, etc etc. but all the same, I did feel like the way the topic was introduced was pretty good. my other disappointment with this game is that it's less actually solving the mystery and more following along. yes, there is information presented that isn't truly relevant to what happened, but there's no real consequence to getting your theories wrong. If you are wanting a much more stressful, heightened detective game (where you're not actually a detective & your mistakes cost you) I would wholeheartedly recommend Night Call.

overall I enjoyed it, it was an interesting story to follow along to for a few hours, just think the plot could have been enhanced more with more details & connections.

I really enjoyed this game. It reminded me of Rear Window and how the protagonist solves the crime through his window (balcony). Voice Acting was excellent. Graphics and animations are not the best, however, it did not really bother me. The story is amazing and very engaging throughout the whole game. Overall, I really recommend it. Well done to the developers and I hope you keep improving as much as you can.

One of the weaker detective game I've played. Very rough around the edges. Severe animation issues. And all around boring. Considering it only took me 3 hours to finish and it still felt like a bit of a drag, it seems half bakes at best. Shame, was excited for it too. At least it's somewhat pretty when the characters aren't turning by sliding or moving through walls.

The narrative was ok. But not good enough to carry the games weight (or so to say the rest of its flaws) on its own. I wish they would've focused on their strengths or developed the further on to iron out the very blatant issues with it. Currently the games issues are truly to its detriment. Talking about police brutality as the police characters play a stock stomping animation and the other character playing a stock prone animation just throws out any and all weight we might feel to a funny occurrence instead. Considering you are bound to a single position with a camera or binoculars, you could've just put both those characters behind a wall we can't see through and play a fall animation on the victim to leave the rest to our imagination instead of doing something so clumsy.

The game does take it self super seriously and I would say with these flaws this would make it a great comedic experience but rest of it is so slow and tedious the main mood stays as boredom instead. I say don't bother.

Pros:
+I was initially attracted to this game because of its similarities to the move Rear Window and it manages to capture the feel of being trapped in an apartment and observing other people from afar
+Not much music but what's there fits the setting and the story

Cons:
-Finding the exact location where your character can interact with things is a little fiddly sometimes
-The game is a little on the short side, the investigation is over before it really gets going

It's a pretty neat concept executed pretty well, just a little hampered by the short length. If you like the premise then I'd definitely get it, otherwise maybe wait for a sale.

What I love about Mi'pu'mi Games is that the time and place their games take place is very important to the story. It's not just set dressing. This one takes places as Spain is making the transition to democracy, which not everyone is happy about. As a retired police officer, you team up with a journalist to solve a murder that took place on your street. It's like a combination of Rear Window, in that you're observing and photographing, as opposed to doing the investigating yourself. Your partner goes and searches for clues and talks to people while you direct and look out for her. Overall, I thought it was quite good. Nice writing and voice acting, great pacing. At around 3 hours it was the perfect length. The story was very engaging, and though there wasn't a ton to the gameplay it was satisfying in a voyeuristic sort of way.

Rear Window but make it anti-fascist and furry.

It's good, but the core relationship feels a little rushed, the main mechanic isn't deep enough to sustain the whole game without getting a little stale. On the other hand the vibes are great, everything feels suitably sun-drenched and warm and then you get this creeping sense of menace as you start to uncover a whole political conspiracy that could be behind any corner if you were able to get down off of your balcony to look for it.

The flower collectors is first person investigation that takes place in Barcelona in 1977 two years after death of Franco and in the weeks coming up to the first elections that signalled Spains' transition into democracy.

Your character is Jorge a former member of the infamous Policia Armada who was retired to a wheelchair following a savage revenge beating. The game takes place mostly in Jorges apartment, on his balcony overlooking the central plaza he lives on. Whiling away his days drinking, stoned on painkillers and spying on his neighbours, he witnesses a murder and decides to piece together the evidence and solve the crime. He's aided in this by a rebel freelance journalist, Melinda, who was to meet the victim for a story she was about to break.

The game wears it's influences on it's sleeve, most notably the Hitchcock movie "Rear Window". Much like the movie, the entire game is from the point of view of a character confined to a wheelchair, observing everyone around him. The murder even takes place during a thunderstorm, just like in the movie. After the murder, upon seeing the polices' lack of protocol and urgency surrounding the crime, Jorge becomes convinced there is something up. Enter Mel, who reveals herself as a journalist who had scheduled the meet with the victim for information on atrocities committed by the Policia Armada and the Guardia Civil.

Over the course of the game you will piece together the stories of the people you have been spying on, solve the murder and help Jorge reconcile himself with his past.

For the most part the game looks fine. The slightly cell-shaded look to the graphics works for the scenery. The issue with the graphics comes to the character models. They're designed well enough, it's just that none of them have proper eyes. They all have this eerie blank stare like you've wound up on the set of the Children of the Corn or some other horror movie. It just destroys a lot of the relatability of a character when you're constantly looking at them thinking "Did they mean to use searing comets for their eyes or was it a mistake?"

The model movements aren't properly done either. They all move with a real artificial style and really make it seem like they are completely separate from the ground or any other objects they're interacting with. The movements don't always sync up with what they're saying either in the dialogue scenes. Some times they're giving off nonchalant body movements when giving a really serious or important line, other times I was looking at a character go full Calculon while describing a mundane activity. This is a particular bugbear as there areso many dialogue scenes that it results in the lack of proper mo-cap becoming a really glaring issue. The lip-sync is terrible too also. There's a chance that's it's synced to the original Spanish and the English voice-over is just a dub but there's no option to play with Spanish Voice-overs so I've no idea. Blasphemous had a similar problem in that, while it was developed by a Spanish studio staffed almost entirely by Spanish speakers, it was released with only English Audio to try to give it as wide an appeal as possible. In fact, it only recently, as of this videos release, got a Spanish Audio release years after the game launch.

The dialogue is decent. It progresses the story but it's not going to blow you away. The best I could say about it, is that it's functional. Most of the characters just outright say what they feel, like they've all been to the same support group or something. I suppose this is a result of the limitation of the graphics. Without the ability to convey anything through facial expressions, you're relying on the script and the voice actor to do the emotional and tonal heavy lifting. Unfortunately, it falls downs on both counts. The voice actors efforts are completely undermined by some really poor editing that leaves huge gaps in-between each line. It really takes the immersion from a scene involving two people in a room when it's abundantly clear that the voice actors aren't.

The use of animals as characters mirrors the similar use of them in the comic series MAUS which uses the cutesy animals as a sort of fluffy counterpoint to the Nazi atrocities it depicts. The flower collectors uses them as a counterpoint to the horrors of Francos Spain. However, unlike MAUS, flower collectors never really goes into any real detail. For all the story you're told, the police were a nasty group of people just beat up and imprisoned a load of artists, poets and gays. A few died and that's what fuels the story but it goes nowhere near the reality that, at one point, around 250 people a day were being shot dead by the police forces in Barcelona alone. In Madrid the number was closer to 400.

I suppose my main issue with this is that the developers could've gone into some real depth here about a topic that isn't very well known. Spain under Franco was basically a War-Crime factory for over thirty years and almost no-one outside of Spain knows a huge amount about it. Even less when you venture outside Europe. So there was a huge vein of historical material that could've been mined to give the story some real bite and traction. Instead the mass deaths are pared down to a handful and the White Terror isn't even mentioned. They even cop out on Jorge by having him state he can't remember what he got up to during his time in the Flower collectors, in an act of ultimate fence-sitting. It would've given the scenes so much more impetus if he'd actually been a witness or even responsible for some deaths. We're given a hand waivey "I was drunk and I can't remember" excuse. I found this odd as it almost seemed as if the writers didn't want to discuss the very events that underpinned the game. This running away from the source material undermined the story and the characters in a big way. With such an interesting angle, I can't see why the devs didn't completely go all in on it.

As for the story itself, it's passible. The series of events that lead from the murder to the resolution never get too far fetched and the mini-stories of all the minor characters are quite good, in particular the one of Carmen the singer. I was confused by the dream sequences being dropped so suddenly. We get one almost every chapter end and they seem to be building to a crest regarding how Jorge came to be in his wheelchair but then we never get another one. Then we're just told bluntly how he got injured. It seemed like such wasted opportunity.

The gameplay is good. Given the nature of the main character, the style of investigation is entirely observation based and it's done quite well. The mechanic is repeated throughout the game so, if it has you bored in the first twenty minutes, I'd quit the game and get the refund because it doesn't get any better as the game goes on. My main issue with the gameplay is that it's quite repetitive in that most of what you're doing is just scanning for an item or person, finding them and clicking.

In conclusion, The flower collectors is an interesting little game (2.5 hours) with a decent story and some OK artwork. It's a game with some good points all offset by some poor design and/or execution. It has good artwork but its' simplicity has all the characters look like they've been hypnotised. The voice-acting is good but is offset by the terrible mo-cap. The dialogue and story work well but there's so much more that could've been put in to really enhance it and give some impact but it falls short in the scant playtime. This is a bit ironic as more game time would've really highlighted the repetitive nature of the gameplay even more and ruined the game.

I'd like to recommend Flower collectors as a game with a unique play angle and a decent storyline but I can't for full price. There's just not enough here, both in content and effort, to justify it. But on sale, I definitely recommend it.

This is one of many noir detective games featuring anthropomorphic animals in my Steam library, which is not a sentence I ever thought I'd type. If that's your extremely niche favorite genre, then you'll love The Flower Collectors.

The idea was interesting, but the realisation is really disappointing.
It is not a game at all, the player is guided through all his actions. The "game" just tells you go there, do that, ask this, look at hat guy, put picture of that person to this spot.
The graphics is nice, but not that nice to compensate the absent gameplay. The plot is also not too much catching. So, not only it is not a real game, it is not a decent interactive video-novel either.

Finally, in the totally realistic story this animals instead of people look just odd. I can't find any reasonable explanation for that.
