When a small mining community falls silent, a young soldier named Daltyn is sent to investigate. Charming Metroidvania, which, if that's your bag, you'll not regret purchasing. I got this in the sale, and it presents insane value, but this is still worthy at full price. Old-school visually, with some lovely filter options, everything is pretty much as you'd expect. I've barely scratched the surface, but it already has me wanting more, which is nice.

Gostosinho e curtinho, não tem muito o que dizer além de que é um metroidvania sólido, história básica, mecânicas que funcionam (atenção especial pro paraquedas que é literalmente inútil após o primeiro uso obrigatório dele), o combate é meio compacto, quase contido mas nada que fizesse a gameplay ser frustrante e a exploração é legal.

A geração procedural é o maior ponto forte do jogo, o que isso significa? Nenhuma run vai ser igual, fulano e ciclano vão ter experiências de jogo (levemente) diferentes, o potencial dessa geração era imenso, mas as salas e corredores todos seguem um mesmo padrão de formato e tilesets, o que é meio broxante, mas isso acontece por ter criado expectativa. Longe de ser ruim, mas deixa aquele gosto de que poderia ter sido algo insano de maneiro.

No geral o saldo é positivo, o jogo tá longe de ser ruim ou uma abominação da natureza como algumas outras reviews amaldiçoam, mas no fim esse é um jogo "ok", ele cumpre o que promete e é isso. Talvez o grande problema das pessoas acharem esse jogo abaixo da média seja por conta de outros jogos com qualidade superior como Hollow Knight e... Hollow Knight, mas no fim esse jogo não merece ser desmerecido, se é que essa frase faz algum sentido.

I had an awesome time with Chasm. If you’re a fan of Symphony of the Night and metroidvania-style games, this one is definitely worth your time.

The pixel art is gorgeous and really nails that classic vibe without feeling dated. Movement and combat feel tight and responsive, which is huge for a game like this. Exploring the procedurally generated world kept things fresh on multiple runs, and I liked how the layout changes while still feeling cohesive.

The progression system hits a nice balance—challenging enough to stay engaging, but never unfair. Boss fights were a highlight for me, especially once you start learning their patterns and optimizing your approach.

One thing I really appreciated was how well the game supports different playstyles. Whether you want to take your time exploring or push for faster clears, it accommodates both.

Also the daily and weekly arcade mode has competitive leader boards and a great community.

Overall, Chasm feels like a love letter to classic action-platformers, but with enough modern touches to stand on its own. Easy recommend.

This game is amazing and I kick myself for waiting for it to go on-sale before purchase. It's a loveletter to olde school side scroller platformers like megaman and metroid with a fantasy medieval twist that just works. There's enough backtracking when you find a new power up to be worthwhile but not feel like you're wasting hours going back and forth again and again tediously. At the time of posting this, I've gotten to the third stage (or level or whatever) and can't wait to keep exploring!

When this game got announced years ago the market was flush with metroidvanias and I was incredibly excited. I can only imagine I was put off at the time by "procedurally generated" and felt like that would lend an unenjoyable experience for the genre.

I finally picked it up and tried it out and couldn't get enough! Enough so that I played through 3 times in order to 100% the achievements and never felt tired of it.

There's a bit of nuance to control timing for attacks that feels really good once you learn enemy movements and start fighting well while avoiding damage.

The soundtrack is not "epic" but almost every areas tunes stayed stuck in my head every day.

All in all, I loved this game and would love to see more.

PS- to those who haven't played or don't like the idea of procedural generation, it is very light. In 3 playthroughs I noticed only very minor changes, at least 2 of which are puzzle related so you can't just google the solution. Core elements stay in place

- im FINALLY done with this BS!!! (YAY), the ONLY "cool" thing in the whole game is the entrance of the big bad boss (not by much and NOTHING more), including the ENDING which [spoiler] has some generic and short NPC bland statement and then goes straight to a short medal ceremony in which your playthrough is graded... no payoff for ANYTHING [/spoiler]. all things above and bellow considered, I see NO REASON to pay 3USD for this game, much less 10.

SUMMARY EDIT:
TL; DR: DONT DO THIS TO YOURSELF!!! on TOP of ALL the INTENTIONAL suckage i list on the orginial review, the game ALSO randomly bugs out in transitions from screen to screen. So... you finally got that level/item/event you were looking for? pray on every transition in between you and the save point.

DONT BUY THIS: THERE IS A LESSON HERE = DO NOT TRUST YOUTOUBE LISTS OF "SOMETHING SOMETHING METROIDVANIAS".. this game IS....... DOGSH*T (splat sound). I will play it as for as long as my resolve holds so as to make the best possible list of reasons why you should not play this game.

First Impresion: Had this game for a while, never played it. Installed it a few days back, they patched it december 3rd 2025 (a month ago)..... the game freezed before i could get to any kind of action (even a tutorial) twice... left it frozen, never unfroze. It DOES have a fix though, you need to write a line of code on the games launching properties.

Also, Im finding achievements DO tell a story. See, in all the games which rub me the wrong way im left thinking "is it just me?" due to the Steam ratings, but then i go into the ahchievements and find that only 60% of players defeated a 100 monsters and only 40% defeated the first boss. This is a game from 2018, meaning EVERYONE (even the ones who left good reviews) drop the game... food for thought

CONTINUATION 1:
-well, the most annoying hub ever created, the getting around in this game is garbage. I mean, castlevania perfected this in th PS2/GBA era, and this dev programmed the need to do at LEAST two gateways before reaching any particular main section. Going back to town looks like this: backtrack to gateway-hub-gateway-town OR backtrack-hub-gateway-gateway-town (an those are the SHORTEST descriptions possible), not ideal for a genre defined by the need to constantly backtrack to find COOL stuff (and i hope its cool stuff when the time comes). EDIT: no, nothing cool so far.

-Save points restore ONLY your HP

-If you are more than 30, the menu opening sound will make you feel you got a facebook message (im seriously beginning to believe this whole game is just a troll)

-enemies dont stagger on hit (none of them), so you need to be perfect at knowing your enemies whole movement. YOU however DO stagger. So, are you on a tight platform against a foe who dashes? time your jumps and blows perfectly or he wont even get the hits he runs into.

-some of the hit boxes are sus, so if you are using knives, prepare to go "WTF WAS THAT?"

-no matter how much you grind, you always do piss poor damage and half your health is gone in 3 hits

Im on a matroidvania binge and so far, the hype about this game is NOT earned.
I'll keep playing and change the review if the game is good, but this is not a good start.

CONTINUATION 2:
-Punnishing of the mildest mistake, this one is yet another game for masochistic *ssh*le gamers who will berate you if you play for entertainment and not bragging rights (ooh, you completed a hard buggy overpriced game... want a cookie?)

-at no point is there any way to be at all prepared to ONE ROUND any boss (at least the first 2), you will have to die several times to uninteresting bosses on uninteresting map just to learn their attack "patterns", what i mean is you need to learn what every attacks looks like on a split second, because there is no order, they can use any of their moves, in any context at any time.

-only 33% of players have defeated the second boss (more food for thought)

-2 Bosses in, and im yet to find one piece of equipment, one spell, one skill one ANYTHING that does anything remotely cool

-3 bosses in, still nothing cool

- OH and you know those upgrades you get by defeating bosses in castlevania games!?!?!? They are here too!! in the form of +3to max HP (i kid you not), all three bosses, same garbage

-Throught the Steam games media page I just found out you are graded when you finish the game (run time, people you saved, kills, etc), just further evidence of the kind of obnoxious mind rot around this game.

-There are familiars here, but they are equipment bound, so... wanna have a creature helping you? you're gonna miss that good defense hat. WHILE talking about familiars, they dont share XP with you... SO you need to lower your foes HP to the last hit and THEN your familiar can gain some XP. Also, im at level 25 with the sword familiar and except for the damage output there is not a single change, not the cooldown, not the sprite, not the range, nothing... AND familiars miss their hits A LOT.

CONTINUATION 3 (final):

- well, im on what lorewise looks to be the last map, and i havent come accross anything fun.
-It is clear the intent behind the creation of this game was to make a streamable game and not much else. This is obvious because
1- everything is put intentionally in a way to hinder your progress as much as possible, every mechanic is just annoying just for the sake of being annoying. Every trap is place in the exact place it needs to be to make the precision platformer sections (the genre more suited to this game) annoying AND making you go through them time and again

2-there little to no thought to lore, NPCs, ambiance. Every NPC is cookie cutter, you've seen this plot a million times and the enemies have are just sh*t thrown into the wall with no thought at all (i guess, the designer came in every day and said "look at the new bs i just copied and pasted from a 100 other games... but reskinned)

3- theres leaderboards with daily and weekly challeges (right now im ranked 2... of 2 players)

Meaning, this game was designed to be frustrating and goad bragging right seekers to one up each other creating a subculture club around this bs.... glad it didnt work

Purtroppo questo gioco soffre di gravissimi problemi di giocabilità che lo rendono abbastanza noioso, soprattutto nell'ultima area. Il sistema di combattimento è completamente da rivedere, sembra fatto senza alcuna cura. La lentezza dei colpi e l'inutilità della schivata rendono l'esplorazione fastidiosa dato il continuo rigenerarsi dei nemici al primo cambio stanza.
Anche le aree di gioco non sono il massimo, non proprio ispiratissime...
Sia chiaro, delle belle idee ci sono eccome, ma quanto detto sopra non permette di apprezzarle appieno.

Un metroidvania sencillito pero con su nivel de dificultad adecuado para que no sea demasiado fácil de acabar. La historia es entendible y sencilla y la jugabilidad esta en la misma línea, por lo que es un producto perfecto para echar un buen rato. Tiene una duración de unas 15 horas, según el tiempo que le dediques a investigar el mapeado. En definitiva, un buen juego.

It's a sweet game overall. I'll put it in the high B tier ofr my MV tier list.
It's a shortened igavania experience with a very nice level design. It doesn't feel like a procedurally generated game, pacing and level design is really on point. Ennemy design is really cool, a lot of ennemies have 2 different behaviours, which makes them quite interesting to fight.
Weapons are quite varied, i changed them multiple times during my playthrough. Bosses work overall very well, last boss could have been more epic.
I think this game deserves a second playthrough to chase all the secrets, and with a higher difficulty.
My main complaints about the game is the lack of cool items to buy. My gold mainly went into potions. It's the mistake a lot of MVs do, putting all the cool items in the loots, and every buyable items are just worse.
Also, game has some passages where i needed to check a guide haha.
The last biome was very cool, but a bit too short (and the last boss gets a runback, aaaaah).
I wished the game had more secrets to discover as well.
What makes the game cool though is that it's short enough, to make it replayable, alongside the level design that will change with the next runs.

Ich war damals schon vom Spiel fasziniert und hatte es auch schon auf der Xbox durch gezockt :D.

Jetzt nach einigen Jahren hat es sich durch ein Sale angeboten das Spiel nochmals zuspielen und zu genießen.

Slow progress, way too much back tracking, enemies respawn as soon as you leave the area, basic map, no direction on where to go, enemies get stronger but your player doesn't, my thumb is sore from jumping the whole game....boring now

El backtracking está bien trabajado, sobre todo gracias al viaje rápido, que facilita volver a zonas anteriores para explorar y conseguir tesoros que antes no estaban a tu alcance. El progreso de habilidades se siente correcto, el pixel art es hermoso —fue lo primero que llamó mi atención— y la música está muy bien lograda. La historia también es interesante, aunque parte de ella está repartida en diarios coleccionables. En general, es un título muy recomendable, pero hay un detalle que no me gustó tanto.

Lo jugué hace muchos años, en mis épocas de navegar por los siete mares *guiño* *guiño*. Ahora que puedo permitirme comprar mis juegos, lo adquirí para rejugarlo y retribuir por las horas de diversión que me ofreció. Sin embargo, esta vez sentí algo diferente: el juego se siente más pesado de progresar.

Subir de nivel cuesta mucho más que antes. Si bien es normal que la experiencia requerida aumente, los puntos de experiencia de los enemigos comienzan a disminuir y otorgan tan poca que algunos llegan a dar solo ¡un punto! Esto provoca que llegar a niveles como el 40, que ni siquiera es tan alto, se vuelva prácticamente imposible. (aunque no es necesario para derrotar al jefe final).

Lo peor es que los enemigos de las nuevas áreas hacen un daño excesivo, por lo que me vi obligado a farmear repetidamente para subir estadísticas. Combates como el del coloso me exigieron aumentar tanto mi defensa como mi ataque solo para sobrevivir a las oleadas de enemigos. Esta vez tuve que enfocarme más en resistir daño que en infligirlo, algo que no recuerdo haber tenido que hacer en mi primera partida.

Este cambio en la progresión terminó siendo mi único punto negativo. Supongo que los desarrolladores lo hicieron para balancear el juego y evitar que fuera demasiado sencillo, pero siento que terminaron afectando el núcleo de la experiencia. Por suerte, esto no opaca lo que hace bien, sigue siendo un juego maravilloso, un Metroidvania excelente que merece mucha más visibilidad y que, por supuesto, recomiendo sin dudar.

This is a pretty fun MetroidVania with the twist of randomized levels thru a seed system. While this adds a challenge and makes getting stuck harder, as every seed is different and thus, a proper walkthrough is not straightforward, it also adds a wee bit of complication if you do get stuck and have the worry that maybe your seed is unbeatable. While I questioned this a few times, I ultimately got through the game. Just when I thought I was stuck, a needed item or ability would be right around a corner or over a ledge I previously couldn't reach. My biggest issues with the game is that it requires A LOT of backtracking due to the randomness of the level design, as well as the need to kill some enemies a dozen or so times just to get them tagged in your beastiary. If you're trying to 100% the game, expect even more backtracking. But, despite those minor gripes, I enjoyed this a lot and may return to it to get those last few achievements.

It's an old school metroidvania that did its homework but nothing more (it's not the next "Symphony of the Night", to be clear). Nice pixel-art graphics, quite good (but not perfect) controls, good sense of exploration (but with some backtracking), challenging difficulty. Levels are procedurally generated, which may seem interesting, but translate into a lack of cohesion and an uninspiring level design. A honest game.

At first glance, this game checks a lot of metroidvania boxes for me. The pixel art is fantastic, I love randomized loot drops, the rpg elements, and pretty decent music. However, one thing holds the game back from being great: frustratingly slow and clunky movement from your character. Where Alucard handled like a Ferrari in SotN, Chasm's MC handles like a grocery cart with a bad wheel. Enemies hit hard, have more attack range, and are far more nimble than Chasm Guy. If they get in close, get ready to watch your health get chunked away while you try to use your useless evade skill and molasses-like move speed in a pathetic attempt to put some distance between you. I finished the game, but by the last two zones, I was absolutely hating it. Can't recommend.

The game is honestly fine. I really like this type of combat and I dont mind the procedurally generated levels, but I cant recommend this game due to 1 reason, backtracking.

The only weakness of procedural generation is how forgettable the levels are, and that's fine, but this game for some reason forces the player to go back and find 1 random room in a location that I dont care about.

What makes backtracking in this game especially annoying is how the defence scales, because you're literally invincible in the old locations, so its not like you're fighting your way to find new places, it feels more like you're just simply wasting your time for no reason.

I'd be fine with the backtracking if it only had some powerful items there, but no, you NEED to backtrack to progress the game, and that's fine and dandy in games like Axiom Verge, or Bloodstained: RoTN, where I know the creators hand made each level to be that way, but here its just random 0's and 1's deciding if I'll have the required room near a teleport, or I'll have to go 10 minutes to find something useful.

The RNG of how rooms can be placed is really annoying, as you can have something important as a Arena placed in a nice 3 minutes stroll range from the nearest save point.

Last boss is, I think, always placed as far away as it can be from a save point. Does it make sense lore wise? Yeah. But do I care about lore when I have to walk 5 mintues to attempt a hard multi-phase fight? No. And it just feels like more backtracking, which I'm already sick of at this point.

I had hopes for this game, and I really enjoyed the first 2 zones, but man, my fire was completely blown out in zone 4. Game went from enjoying exploration and combat, to just watching the exact same things I've already played hours ago, what a shame.

Только закончил проходить игру на нормальной сложности. После игры осталось двоякое ощущение, чувствуется, что к концу разработчики "устали" и последние две локации делали "лишь бы закончить".

Начинается всё хорошо, но в процессе прохождения начинаешь замечать некоторые моменты:

1. Зачем столько оружия, если всё равно всё упирается в твою мобильность и урон? Достаточно просто использовать стандартные одноручные мечи, постепенно подбирая их улучшенные аналоги. Остальное - слишком медленное и не добавляет ощутимого профита от снижения скорости. И это в игре, где практически с каждым противником бой проходит так - "увернулся от атаки - ударил - увернулся от атаки - ударил".

2. Услуги большинства NPC бесполезны. Зачем у определённого NPC покупать еду, условно, за 100 золотых с отхилом в 30 HP, если можно просто купить зелье у другого за 250 золотых, которое лечит сразу на 200HP ?? Аналогично с кузнецом - когда ты соберешь ресурсы для крафта, допустим, брони - у тебя уже на тот момент будет более лучшая броня, котору ты просто подобрал из сундука...

3. Магия хоть и есть - но тоже смысла не даёт. Восстановить за бесплатно долго, а урон даже от прокачанного заклинания небольшой. + Она также фризит ГГ пока он его кастует, после чего ГГ обычно получает урон. В те моментах, где казалось бы заклинания подходят для использования - бессмысленно, так как тебя в ответ сразу атакуют.

4. Есть дэш назад. Зачем? В начале еще можно где-то использовать, но ближе к середине игры у противников дальность атаки уже больше, чем твой дэш, так что увернуться так не получится. Вместо дэша учишься просто отпрыгивать назад. т.к. это единственный способ увернуться от атаки.

5. Последние два уровня - просто унылый ужас. В предпоследнем некоторые локации повторяются по три раза (ну изменили бы просто структуру проходов - уже не казалось бы таким одинаковым). А последняя локация - это просто линейный короткий путь из точки А в точку Б. Есть комнаты с ответвлением, но они - тупо пустые. Очень сильно чувствуется недоделанность и желание "сдать проект и забыть". Может у разработчиков финансирования не хватило, не знаю...

Из плюсов:
1. Приятная графика;
2. Приятная музыка.

Ok, a marginal thumbs up after 4 1/2 hours, but I have thoughts.

The good:
The pixel art and animations are good.
Controls for a 2D metroidvania are fine.
The overall vibe, including the music, is spot-on.
The difficulty overall isn't too hard (caveat coming).
Will run on a potato.

The meh:
The story and NPCs aren't terrible, but not too memorable either.
The dungeons and enemy variety (admittedly after only 4 hours) are a bit lacking.
I really wish you could save anywhere. For me, this was a coffee break game, but the fact that I had to find those save points really dissuaded me from playing unless I knew I had a good 40 minutes free ahead of me.
The map could be a lot clearer as to where you actually are on it. Dungeon layouts were generally meh.
There's a number puzzle early on that I couldn't figure out. And there are narrow passages I don't know how to get through. I finally hit a dead end, and didn't really feel motivated to spend hours Googling/figuring out what I needed to do to progress. Without those frustrations, I probably would've persevered to the end. Guess I'm lazy.

The verdict:
It's a good enough game, but you really have to be in that dedicated metroidvania mind space. And you also have to be able to tolerate a certain amount of blandness and uninspired platforming. With 1000 some games waiting in my Steam queue (thank/curse you Humble Bundle), I think 4 hours of time was enough for me. Decent, but wait for a sale.

Nothing about it is particularly good, nor is anything all that bad.
Everything is just boring, but no so much that you'd want to stop playing.
I didn't particularly enjoy it, but I did finish it. I "had fun", but I didn't really [i]have fun[/i].

Review from 2020:
I kickstarted this game a long time ago and it released a year or so back, and I knew going in that there were problems with the procedural generations and I can see that now. Rooms don't always flow, and sometimes you will get a room that is identical to a previous one. From a tech standpoint, its neat that there is progression that metroidvanias have, but you can tell that some rooms are concrete. It did have some beautiful pixel art however, but it was short and checkpoints were oddly placed (likely do to the random generation)

mi è piaciuta l'ambientazione, la semplicità e il fatto che tutto sommato abbia un gameplay sufficiente. non mi è piaciuta una parte della colonna sonora (ho optato per togliere la musica dopo poco) e l'ho trovato poco affinato in alcune meccaniche, tipo il guadagnare monete, ma non solo. Secondo me una sufficienza piena per un gioco che in una 15ina di ore al massimo viene concluso già al primo giro e che è stato creato da un team molto piccolo.

This is a decent little metroidvania. The action and platforming are very tight. There are satisfying loot drops throughout. It has a few puzzles that grow in complexity as the game progresses. Just know that it's not exploration focused. You won't be looking for slightly discolored blocks to hit that lead to secret passages like in a true metroidvania. The developer seems invested. Get it on sale and enjoy it for what it is.

One hour in, and apparently I've got plans for the weekend now 😂

In my opinion, Chasm is a brutal but fair pixelated platformer that rewards skill and punishes carelessness. Every death felt deserved, and every win felt earned. The game’s core hook is exploration. Procedurally generated rooms keep each run feeling fresh, loot drops can completely change your approach, and rescuing NPCs add shops and side content to the hub town.

Boss fights are a standout: tough, smartly designed, and usually placed near save points so you can jump back in quickly. Early combat can feel cramped, and without better gear it can get frustrating, but the progression system helps smooth this out as you play.

The story did not grab me in my first hour, but that is likely just my taste. I tend to need narrative-heavy presentation to care about a plot, and honestly, I have played plenty of great games like Mario where the “why” did not matter to me at all. Here, the gameplay loop was enough to keep me hooked without relying on the story.

For me, the most exciting moments came from the unpredictability of loot. One early drop completely changed how I handled certain enemies, and that constant “what will I get next?” feeling made exploration addictive.

At just under $23 CAD, I think it is worth it for genre fans, even at full price. When it is on sale for under $5 (80% off), it is an easy must-buy for anyone curious.

Final Verdict: 8/10
A tight, challenging, and rewarding platformer with strong replay value through procedural generation and loot variety. Story took a back seat for me, but the gameplay more than carried the experience.

A great adventure game!! I loved since I started the adventure. The graphics is amazing and charming for pixel art lovers and for those who aren't!
Combat system has great variations, which I personally loved exploring.
