It´s an interactive chose your own adventure fantasy book with graphics that look like good old Amiga games. Should entertain you for an hozr or two.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Neat little game in theory, horribly frustrating once you actually play it.
Navigating through the maps (even though they are pretty small) is annoying AF because instead of clicking on the room you want to go to, you have to walk through all the rooms between A and B, which just takes a ton of time.
There is no option to save and when you die, which even the description says is "often", you have to start at the very beginning again. I usually like to explore every option but with BS like this i just don't have the patience to. I have died twice in the first chapter and am so annoyed and frustrated that i will likely continue on with a guide, if i ever decide to open this game again.
I really like the idea of this dungeon crawler and am very disappointed that the exeution of this game is so poorly done.
Edit: it took me 30 minutes just to click through the game with a guide so not having the option to save when every fourth decision will kill you is just cruel.

I found This Book is a Dungeon (TBIAD) to be an overall positive experience. The gameplay of TBIA is mainly structured around navigating atmospheric spaces through Twine hyperlinks that are occasionally illustrated with pixel art. The main draw of TBIAD is its atmosphere; presenting interesting spaces that are reminiscent of a TTRPG one-shot with a horror theme. The author I think succeeds with the textual content the most; the writing (supported sometimes by the illustrations) present enough detail to let you imagine the space without being bloated and weighing down your brain. Additional reactive text that changes based on actions or retrying links are good details too.
As some of the negative reviews note, there's some design/presentation issues that hinder the experience. While sound/music would enhance the atmosphere, that's not generally considered as pressing for interactive fiction. What drags down TBIAD's experience is unskippable textual effects and a lack of save functions. Either separately would not be too much of an issue, but I did notice the drag where a death restarts you in the middle "hub" of the book without accounting for any chapters already completed, so getting to an ending requires doing all chapters without a death at some point. A lot of interactive fiction either solves similar issues with saves or by just allowing entering unhindered strings of commands, but TBIAD has textual effects like waiting for sentences or dialog that feeds out a sentence at a time. These are evocative when first seen but slow down your experience when retrying a chapter after a death. It's not a major loss, but it injures the smoothness of the experience a little. This is easily the biggest issue I have with it (other than the combat being random and one-note; TBIAD would probably be better without them or making combats set pieces), though I agree with another point of the white background being a little much for me. That's subjective, but as a lot of us are staring at screens a lot these days, defaulting to a dark mode or maybe like an ivory-sepia type aesthetic wouldn't be the worst.
I enjoyed the experiences presented in the game thoroughly individually, and some of the puzzles and additional flavor writing I thought were clever and appropriately mood-setting. In addition to the IF side of the game TBIA also provides links to its Development Diary, which is of particular interest to me. Small indie productions and IF are fascinating individual artifacts to me and seeing the end result followed by the guts that went on behind the curtain is incredibly more interesting/valuable to me than a game alone. I think TBIA is worth its price tag given that it's both a playable IF and includes documentation towards its creation in a 169 page somewhat-large-fonted (I presume to make it easily readable on E-Readers) PDF. Creators like this deserve support, in my opinion.

First of all, This game is giving me a headache after awhile as i am constantly staring at a white screen with some black text and no there is no dark mode available.
Second there will be blue text you will need to click as they are the "interacting" buttons, but they keep popping around from left to right if you have clicked on some. Which i find rather annoying if my eyes are already getting burned down by the white screen and this can be easily fixed by putting the blue text in a preset position below the screen. The text speed is rather slow at times and death is around the corner by a single mistake.
There is no sound or music, just endless reading and clicking. i am confused in this game and the stories much as my character ingame was. After awhile i got tired and de-motivated to endlessly read the text on the screen and just kept clicking on the blue ones.
This game may only be meant for those who is only interested in reading text and doesn't care about the white background, no sound and repetitive dying.

Me gustan bastante los bichos del juego y algunas cosas de la ambientacion, pero es un juego totalmente pasado de epoca.
Hay juegos de escritura como este, anteriores a los años 80' y podia tener sentido en aquella epoca con la tecnologia muy rudimentaria, pero esto es realmente algo hecho asi nomas.
Felicito al creador obviamente por el trabajo, pero realmente si queria hacer algo simple (en cuanto al concepto) le hubiera puesto mas cosas, musica, mas sonidos, mejor trama, etc.

The game "This Book Is A Dungeon" is a text based game and it does a poor job at being one, first you can't skip any text and sometimes you have to wait for the text to continue and you have read the same text again and again every time you interact with something and, combat there is only ONE thing to do and that thing is attack that's all you can't flee or do anything else, the only way to continue the text is to click on blue text and that fact that in the first level you have you go to a bird creature talk to him and "steal his shiny" which is a key then you go back down open a closet get a bowl, get blood in the bowl then talk to the bird creature go through his boring text AGAIN feed him the blood until he dies get a key which was inside him? You go through a door and see a creature you can go down and try to pass it, but first you need a rusty knife on my first playthrough i didn't know that, want to know what happens if you don't have the rusty knife [spoiler]you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ die.[/spoiler] could have been better if they added music to the game, a skip text button, settings/dark mode and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ability to save. 2/10
its a very basic game, and while you can tell that the one who made this does not have much experience in actually making games you can tell how much passion they put into it,
all of the paths are well thought out and fun to figure out, the descriptions and atmosphere are horrifying, storytelling and artwork are phenomenal
however these strengths are held back by the actual game-play, it essentially operates like a choose your own adventure book, additionally there is no loading games so if you mess up (which is inevitable) in chapter 4 you have to play from the beginning meaning it can get slow.
overall despite its shortcomings you can tell someone put a lot of love into it and if you have enough patience, and are into great storytelling and phenomenal visuals this a good experience for you.

Great writing, with a very creepy story. The only downside is that if you die you have to restart from specific points. BUT it's really cool to see what you can do with Twine and I enjoyed getting a ending
Looks like a simple text adventure at first, but quickly gets more interesting as you get to the dungeon and unlock the map. It's still a text adventure, but feels more dynamic as you can see the map, your whereabouts and the creatures that you're facing.
It feels like an old school choose-your-adventure with cute pixel graphics and well written text. If you're into this kind of adventures, jump right in. If you don't like to read, it's probably best to skip it.

Сюжет довольно мрачный. Ужасные подземелья, демоны, каннибалы, отвратительные черви и оккультизм. Всё это здесь есть. Вас ждёт приключение, где на каждом шагу поджидают опасности. Интересно оно тем, что развилок много, и каждый раз вы можете прощупывать новый путь. Вариаций много. И часто заканчиваются вашим поражением. И тогда начинаете всё заново.
Я не особо часто встречался с подобным жанром, но опыт получил положительный. Только считаю, что многовато просят за столь необычный проект. К тому же нет русского языка языка, а вся игра состоит из текста, который нужно читать. Но, в целом, неплохо.

An engaging Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style fantasy/horror title with charmingly unique pixel graphics.
If doing a lot of reading isn't your thing, then this won't be your cup of tea. Fair warning. If, however, you enjoy immersing yourself in a good story, then this is the game for you! There are many different branches to explore, tons of lore, and like any MacVenture title, there are also a lot of ways to die.
There's no music, but the game is windowed, so anyone who really wants background noise can just supply their own anyway.
No installation or startup issues, no bugs, all in all a solid working title. Recommending for fans of text-based adventures and role-playing games.
A few hours of good wholesome fun!

This was written so well. I was very engaged and compelled to explore every avenue of the game. It was a magical trek through a seething shadow land, and I very much enjoyed the stroll. The execution of the theme was excellent, with a deep and haunting world building. The depth was such a pleasant surprise, the quality of the books and the substance of the descriptions were incredible. A great experience. Thank you for the time you took to make this, I was glad to get to play it, and now to know it exists, and that is has planted it's spores in my mind.

Though the TWINE-based system is primarily used for interactive text adventures, there was a distinct lack of dungeon elements as ostensibly shown by the screenshots. There [spoiler]is one required [/spoiler]monster encounter, and as far as I know, [spoiler]you are guaranteed to win.[/spoiler]
[*] You primarily progress through trial-and-error, meeting many grisly ends along the way to the ending. This is a bit like a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) books.
[*] ... though unlike CYOA books, you don't have an easy way of getting back to your place after you died. This requires the player to flip through many of the exact same dialogue boxes just to get back to where they were.
[*] You can read text and books along the way that have short scary stories in them. Some are subversive, others are predictable for the genre-savvy.
[*] Though very short (my 2.3 hours includes around a half-hour of cooking lunch), the game feels much longer due to pacing and cycling through previously-completed pathways.

Quite a bit slow to start due to having to read a lot of text, and that'll be a theme throughout.
There are several quality of life features I would have liked to see, for example more checkpoints when solving the paintings, and the ability to use your keyboard to choose the different options.
Overall though a rather horrifically captivating experience.

ときおり差し込まれる戦闘、選んだだけでゲームオーバーが確定する即死パラグラフ、何もかもが古式ゆかしい。
ちなみにセーブ機能はない。
「自由な巻き戻しを許すと、ゲームブック本来の面白さが失われるでしょ？」という作者の声が聞こえてきそうだが、指セーブ（分からないヤングメンは40代以上のオッサンに聞こう）の効かないデジタルでこれをやられると、ストレスがたまるだけなのでは。
全部まとめて3時間程度のボリュームらしいが、ちょっとそこまでの気力が湧かなかった。
40年前であれば間違いなく神ゲーだけど。

The writing's good, but sadly this game is not merely a book. This book is a game. Ironically, this game [i]would[/i] have my wholehearted recommendation if it were just a book.
While permadeath tends to serve roguelikes well on account of their consistent variation, a permadeath [i]book[/i] is something that boggles my mind a little. If you were reading a novel where you persistently were forced to read over again from the first page, how much fun do you reckon you would have? Very little, and that's the issue. A misstep in [i]This Book is a Dungeon[/i] can lead to your untimely demise, which isn't remedied with something as simple as the load of a save, as there [b]are no saves[/b] in this game. Death means repeating every single action that you had performed up until that point, which means hopping around the map and collecting the same inventory items, all while reading the same lines of dialogue, resenting the game more and more with each failure.
Let's be honest, who really started the book again when they died in a choose-your-own adventure in the 90s? You bookmarked the page you were on, and checked multiple paths before making your choice just to be sure you were headed in the right direction. It still felt like an accomplishment when you reached the end, as the adventure had been immersive and - most of all - interactive.
This Book is a Dungeon doesn't make efforts to add a huge amount extra to the formula, which I imagine some purists would prefer. In other ways though, it feels unrefined. There's no music or sound to speak of, and the graphics are rudimentary. The writing itself is relatively evocative, but it does little to reap the benefits of being a video game. After a handful of playthroughs and deaths, I'd had enough with this game. It might have been a passable choose-your-own adventure in print, but makes little effort to be a good game.

Short but pleasant experience. It's not a dungeon crawler like the description says but if you like choose your own adventure books, you will enjoy this.
Text-based dungeon crawler, with a specific solutions that require trial and error to find out through repeating the slow text sequences. This game frequently goes on sale for 90% off (49 cents) so if existential horror dungeon crawler via text snippets is your thing you might just want to pick up a visual novel instead, but for the dungeon crawl experience just spend $4 to pick up The Warlock of Firetop Mountain on sale because that will deliver the same kind of experience but much much better.
I want to like the game but the text is so slow and tedious.
Sometimes I know a choice will kill me but I do it anyways to read the death scene.. however, this will force you to restart from the beginning. The writing is good but it's not worth reading more than once maybe twice, unfortunately that is your fate should you play this game.

+ interesting narrative played out uniquely
- one of two endings determined only by your last decision
- no saving/loading means to see that one last decision you need to replay quite a bit (it's not worth it! YouTube it!)
- no save/load also means failing/dying isn't fun but a chore
- no quick text skip and the fact that clicking certain text progresses you (which is always in a different spot on the screen) means you can't progress very quickly if you fail or just want to see both endings
- combat isn't fun, poorly implemented, and bad luck could lose you time
Honestly this is an amazing TWINE, but the limitations of it being a TWINE coupled with the negs I mentioned above mean it can be a drag if you get unlucky or would rather experiment. Would have probably been better if they kept it linear with one ending or had made a "TWINE-like" game in another engine if they wanted to do more than TWINE can handle. Also, there's a ton of great TWINEs out there that are free, this one is $5...
it's good but I think it's more of an "on sale curiosity". Still, "recommend"ing it as that.

This game isn't really a game, more of a "click until you die" type of thing. There no real combat, just clicking to progress through the fight until one or the other dies, as well. Another big turn down would be that there's no sound in the entire game, just complete silence. Definitely a big no from me, even on sale.

Basically a choose-your-adventure text game. The writing was a bit garbled and i don't even think this game has any audio XD
the good:
absolutely awesome writing, and finding out all deaths is FUN
the meh:
personally the second chapter feels a bit bland compared to the rest. maybe because I'm not into magic/summonings.
the bad:
blinding white screen
being able to save would be ideal, but at least a "fast forward" button would help a lot (simply pressing space should select the answer if there's only one)
all in all, recommended if you are into gory writing.
I really, really like the writing and the atmosphere that this book creates. However, I feel like 4 euros is a bit steep. Also, the fact that there's no way to save makes it pretty tedious, since you have to go through it in one sitting. Which isn't hard, because it's not very long, but it's still pretty annoying.
I should mention that in the main menu you can skip directly to the central hub, where you can get into one of the three sub-levels that you have to complete in order to proceed. However, if you complete one (or more) and then guess wrong, having to restart, you have to complete the sub-level again. Which is just a pain, because there's no skip function to skip ahead of text you already read. Having to spam left click on the words just to get to the part where you guessed wrong to have another go is just way more annoying than it needs to be. You could just have, in the main menu, an option like "tick this box to start in the hub with painting 1 and 2 completed" or stuff like that, maybe a box to tick for each painting. As I said, it's not a long game, and once you know where to go it doesn't take long to complete. Still, there's really no excuse for forcing the player to go through already completed segments just to waste a few minutes of their life.

Стильный минимализм: использован только черный и оттенки красного; шрифт - как набранный на печатной машинке - эстетика самиздата или рукописи XX века - того же Лавкрафта, например; очень скупое использование картинок - как иллюстрации в книге. Нет ни анимации, ни музыки. И не надо: это же книга! Пиксельная графика и тексты - очень высокого качества (хотя ничего особенно оригинального в них нет).
Претензий к игре две:

Что само по себе прекрасно, но далее нам предстоит несколько минут утомительно прокликивать десятки экранов, уже неоднократно прочитанных, чтобы дойти до неправильного сделанного выбора... и умереть двумя страницами позже. Из 2-3 часов, которые занимает прохождение, на это занятие уходит примерно половина.

This Book Is A Dungeon is an old Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novel with less complexity than one of the Steve Jackson/Ian Livingstone Fighting Fantasy novels. The developer chose to make a HTML-esque implementation and dump it on Steam. There's a bit of story attached but it's an incoherent word salad not worth reading.
What we have here is really one of the worst attempts at making a video game I've seen in a long time. The developer seems to have been incapable of even entry level video game development techniques, like animated sprites. Even 2D retro pixel platformer devs manage to puke out a functional animated video game. This "game" is essentially a selection of hypertext links that might as well be web pages with occasional artwork. Since that can be done in a web browser, and has been done better in paperback books, there's no justification for this existing at all. People who want to play an RPG but don't want to play a video game should look at some of the old Fighting Fantasy books (some of which have been released on Steam and compared to this, they're amazing, mind you, my dog could crap out scrabble tiles that make a more compelling story).
It should be a telling sign to any developer if their product is less mechanically complex than a paperback book, it's not qualified to be called a video game.
Though you can see a DND style map in the screenshots, this is a correct-path-learning text adventure game that should be for free on mobile devices, rather than on steam. Lazy
A review from early on in the game:
An absolute gem of a game, this is essentially pick-a-path text adventure (like an actual book on your screen). Very reminiscent of old DOS games from the 80s and early 90s, but far better than any I remember playing. Excellent writing and atmospheric settings. A highly captivating and enjoyable experience, well worth full price (and a no-brainer at any sale price).
One thing: With perma-death and no saves (AFAIK), it's extremely unforgiving. Every time you die, you'll have to start all the way at the beginning. While this extends gameplay time and makes for a bigger experience that can't be beat in a single sitting (or a dozen sittings), it can get frustrating.
Basically a "Choose your own adventure" game with some basic combat on PC, no sound, very limited graphics and there's puzzles that require you writing stuff down, because you'll be required to remember it later. Kind of dull. This would have been much better if it went with more of a "Shadowgate" style.
Decent writing, some good art and it feels like an old school adventure game.
However... Why in the world did the dev make the background pure white with black text on it?. Instead of going for a kind of darker background(grey or black).
Still, if your eyes can take it , this is an intresting game with alot of good writing and paths to choose.

This Book is surely a Dungeon! Essentially a choose your own adventure book in electronic form, TBIAD was a nice light read from start to finish. Streamlined, decently written passages (some confusing typos here and there) made going through the game enjoyable, and the minimal presentation along with the lovely bits of pixel art made clicking through each of the choices and each of the sections a breeze. Nothing too deep, but I enjoyed the theme very much and made it worth digging into it. I do wish for a save option, but I understand the limitations of Twine as a development platform. There was also a single combat encounter that I ran into, and it seemed fairly pointless to me. But I liked it nonetheless! For a cheap afternoons time, I'd certainly recommend it.
Really interesting horror story. Loved the story, and many ways to die.
