A hidden gem.
This is a cinematique 2d platformer, a genre which was more popular in the 90s with games like Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback and Heart of Darkness. In The Way, you play as Major Tom, yes, that's his name. Just in the first scene you get your recently deceased wife out of her tomb and carry her to your home. You can't let go of her and the rest of the game is about finding a temple of life to resurrect her. It's not a super interesting plot, but it serves its purpose. The game features two endings which are just splash screens showing what happened.
It's a beautiful pixel art game. The first proper level takes place at night in a big military base, but later one you will visit alien worlds. Anything gets you instakilled but fortunately checkpoints are quite generous. The game mixes platforming, combat and puzzle solving. There's a bit of stealth, particularly in the first mission, until you get your first weapon. Around mid game, you start to gain new tools to solve puzzles and dispatch enemies.
Regarding puzzles, this is probably the most interesting aspect. They are quite challenging, like evening the energy levels of different sources by moving a battery back and forth, or moving a cart of ore through a facility to destroy a robot. Most of the times, there's no hints on what to do, you have to figure it out. A particular puzzle which requires you to make a long sequence of inputs is deviously designed with a twist that requires lateral thinking to even understand what's going on.
On the sound department, the soundtrack fits the atmosphere perfectly. Expect sounds that reminds of Vangelis or futuristic science fiction.
Bosses are quite fun and challenging. There are only a handful of them, you generally can beat them in the first or second attempt, but they offer a lot of variety as none of them require you to just shoot blindly.
Now, the worst aspect of this game is that for some reason you only have one save slot and no cloud saving. If you want to play the game in another computer you need to copy the savefile like old times. If you want to start a new game, you better make a manual backup of your save first. There's also no manual save, your progress is just automatically saved after some progress.
Another small complaint I have, is the inclusion of 2 enemies just at the end of the game, that are somehow homages to LucasArts games, that make no sense at all. This is not a point and click adventure, and the tension and atmosphere was always very serious. They would have been ok as an easter egg.
It's a wonderful game that somehow got mostly forgotten. Definitely recommended.

Ужасная игра, прикрывающаяся стилизацией под классику вроде [i]Heart of darkness, Another world, Flashback[/i] (нужное подчеркнуть), но ничего общего по факту с классикой не имеющая, созданная авторами лишь для того, чтобы обманом максимально затянуть прохождение монотонной и весьма длинной беготней между буквально нacpaнными друг на друга бесячими, иссушающими и выматывающими головоломками ради головоломок в худших традициях времен рассвета жанров [i]point & click[/i] и прочих [i]action adventure[/i], когда разрабы специально cpaли игрокам, чтобы их игры подольше проходили и они лучше продавались, - та корысть в итоге породила миллионы "утят" с одноименным "синдромом" и множество далеко не очень хороших, мягко говоря, игр, что среди массового потребителя принято считать [b]Ш.Ы.Д.Е.В.Р.А.М.И[/b]. Этой потребительской болезнью страдает каждый из нас без исключения.
До пустыни и трех генераторов еще куда ни шло и есть какой-никакой баланс между духотой и прогрессией, но на этом моменте и далее становится просто невозможно играть, потому что roвноволомки валят на каждом шагу. Дальше я уже высох и не вижу смысла когда-либо возвращаться.
[spoiler]Сэкономлю ваше время - коротко о концовке: в финале месим босса и узнаем, что инопланетяне не хотели умирать и цифровизировали себя ради вечной жизни, но все пошло по мaнде, которая всем по итогу и пришла. Жену нормально не воскресить и десятилетия поисков глав. героем храма вечной жизни пошли по все той же мaнде.

How is this game so obscure? It's spellbinding. If you approach it as a straight platformer then you'll be disappointed, as it's more of a puzzle game with platform elements. There are a wide variety of different puzzles, but the game gives you enough hints to be able to figure it out, and the platforming isn't so bad either. I played with mouse and keyboard and would suggest that's the best way to play, as it helps with aiming. The audio is wonderfully atmospheric, giving a real Blade Runner vibe, and the story of the protagonist who can't get over the death of his wife gives it an emotional appeal. Seriously, this game needs much more attention that it has got, it's like Another World but a hundred times better.
1st impression, NOT GOOD!
You're going to have to remap your controls in a UI that likes to fight against you, making edits. I have no idea what was going through the devs minds, when they set up the control scheme (Right stick is movement & they expect you to also use your right thumb to jump & interact with objects) OR when they made it so that as you're changing the control scheme, the UI is actively implementing the updates. (for instance, if you change the action/accept button it immediately implements & you have to start using that during the remap.... crap like that makes your UI confusing as hell!
Unfortunately, I'm not in the mood to deal with the UI mind effing me, at the moment, so I shut the game down after about 10 minutes. I'll update when I eventually have enough patience to deal with this nonsense.

The Way is a beautiful game. It's somewhere between Flashback and Another World, although not quite as memorable as either title. But there are some really cool levels, decent puzzles, excellent pixel art, and a really interesting world to explore.

Да, платформер трудноватый местами, но не так, чтобы это было невозможно, или от этого бы горело (как по мне гораздо приятнее всего этого souls-like добра). И вообще это hard sci-fi, кто говорит, что должно быть просто. Классные механики и загадки.
Долго ищу что-то похожее, но пока с трудом. Обязательно перепройду.

I don't like writing negative reviews. Games are a form of art, and tastes vary widely. I also understand how much time, effort, and skill it takes to create a video game.
Let's start with the positives. The game boasts stunning pixel art and an absolutely fantastic, ambient soundtrack. The DLC with the music is definitely worth picking up.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, this title doesn't come close to being a successor to Another World, my favorite game, or even a comparable one. Another World was a true cinematic platformer - each screen felt fresh, surprising, and immersive, like watching a film unfold. The Way, on the other hand, falls short with poor animations, a weak story, clunky controls, and frustrating puzzles and obstacles.
It never managed to pull me in, instead, it felt like a constant source of irritation. I just wanted to rush through and be done with it.
It's an ambitious project, but sadly, it feels half-baked and unpolished. In my view, this game isn't worth your time. There are better options out there.
The game is zero fun, is extremely boring and has too much platforming which is done badly.
And some really unintuitive puzzles on top of it. Not much except that at all. Don't buy it even for one euro

Eu adoraria saber o final da história, mas honestamente, é um jogo lento demais para mim. Até se eu não morresse toda hora por causa da lentidão, seria um grande fã do jogo. Mas do jeito que está agora, não tem condições. Se houvesse um patch ou hack para deixar a movimentação mais rápida eu até jogaria novamente.

The game is good, and the puzzles are engaging—challenging but not overly difficult or illogical. However, bear in mind that I have not gone through the entire game yet. I agree with everyone who says the atmosphere feels very much like Another World. For me, the biggest downside is the controls. They feel somewhat clumsy, even compared to Another World, let alone Flashback. All in all, if you can get this game on sale, it is definitely worth a try.

Fun bit of nostalgia with the usual tedious nonsense that goes with old-school platform games. Timing and position have to be just right or you'll miss a jump and fall to your death. Again and again.

Es una verdadera pena porque en verdad quería que me gustara este juego, pero debido a algunos puzzles que mas que difíciles eran tediosos y absurdos, y debido también al problema de los checkpoints, no pude amar este juego. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaba el juego, los acertijos se volvían mas complicados, lo cual estaría bien sino es porque también se volvían bastante injustos y tediosos, por no decir repetitivos. Puedes avanzar bastante en un acertijo, pero si mueres te regresa demasiado atrás. Los checkpoint están muy mal distribuidos en el mapa, hicieron falta muchos mas de estos puntos de guardado, porque a veces avanzabas bastante pero morías y regresabas al principio de la pantalla y eso desanima demasiado. Algunos enemigos están muy mal colocados, y otros son un dolor en el cul0. El minijuego de deslizarse por una colina es horrible y no esta pulido. Realmente siento que el juego esta alargado artificialmente, y han complicado innecesariamente algunos rompecabezas para hacer el juego mas largo, una pena porque creo que no era necesario.
Para completar el juego tuve que detenerme varias veces y retomarlo mas tarde, porque ya había perdido la paciencia, y no es por los acertijos sino por algunas mecánicas que no están bien pulidas y requieren una habilidad milimétrica que el juego no te la da, y eso es algo que detesto en todo videojuego. Por ultimo, el jefe final, [b]The Big Boss[/b]... Ahhhgg, no diré spoilers pero debo debo admitir que estoy decepcionado.
Por todas estas cosas, no puedo recomendar el juego. De verdad quería que me gustara, se ve que le metieron amor al juego, pero les falto pulirlo un poco mas y recortar cosas innecesarias. De todas formas tiene acertijos interesantes, mentiría si dijera que no me divertí en algunas ocasiones y que tiene varios acertijos brillantes, pero mi sensación final es bastante agridulce. Si aun así quieres jugarlo, te recomiendo comprarlo en una buena rebaja.

handled similar themes with much more impact and emotion (even if it was in a very traumatic way)
* The plot twist is extremely predictable.
* Of course the alien dog dies. It was so clearly telegraphed that there was no emotional weight to it.
* The protagonist feels like he was created just to suffer. He starts alone with nothing but a dead companion and ends the
same way, just with a different dead companion. In the end cutscene, he gets to watch alien cities and nature grow across
the planet, but couldn’t the developers at least show the aliens he helped standing beside him? That moment felt hollow
and disappointing
* While the game features some cool alien designs, the main ones at the end look like generic robed cultists. What a
letdown.
* As for that mysterious alien who kept showing up, turns out they’re just a glorified messenger for some furry-looking G-
Man clone.
* When the G-Man figure heard the whole story, his reaction was pretty much mine: "Pity… I expected more than that."

This game only had two things going for it. One, It had an interesting story, and two, it had good pixel art and that's it. I had to use a guide the entire time I played, the puzzles were unnecessarily hard, and the game was unnecessarily unforgiving with check points. If I would have paid more attention to reviews that mention this I would not have bought it, if you insist on getting it, get it on sale.

Looks and feels like a Sierra adventure game (eg, Space Quest) on steroids. Great atmosphere, great pixel art, great music. However, it also has action platforming that requires PRECISION timing and an auto checkpoint system that may reset you quite far back when you die (which will be often during the platforming). As such, its gameplay is a bit old school and will be annoying if you don't have the patience to die & retry repeatedly. Mouse and keyboard controls seem much more responsive than gamepad.

En The Way carecemos de barra de salud, por lo que la muerte será instantánea tanto si nos precipitamos desde cierta altura, como si caemos presa de alguna de las peligrosas criaturas o trampas que abundan en el planeta. La narrativa tiene un peso preponderante, con una historia intrigante que se irá desenvolviendo poco a poco y textos que surgirán del personaje durante el propio juego a modo de reflexiones o comentarios.

Aunque se nota que el juego tiene tiempo y que ciertos aspectos de su jugabilidad podrían haber quedado algo obsoletos, el título está bien pulido y el conjunto entre gráficos pixel art, buena trama, puzzles y diversas mecánicas interesantes hacen que The Way sea, en mi opinión, una obra maestra. He disfrutado mucho jugándolo y me ha dejado muy buen sabor de boca, por lo que recomiendo encarecidamente probarlo a los amantes de las aventuras pixel art o nostálgicos de este género. Superar el juego puede llevar unas 5-6 horas.

The game begins with you digging up your wife's grave. It's a phenomenal opening that immediately gives way to "walk here to click a thing and then walk back to click another thing" non-puzzles, many of which include waiting for a security light to pass. The opening act includes one decent puzzle, several mediocre password hunts, and one infuriating backtrack-fest where you walk back and forth across the level to see which of nine combinations is the correct one.
I am now finally on an alien planet, and I have not had any fun yet. Maybe it gets better from here, but the reviews make me think the elements that have frustrated me so far are only going to get more prominent. I'm just going to play Another World or Flashback again instead.
(One other thing: It bothered me that a game about being devastated at your loved one's death opens with you murdering one of your coworkers to open a gate. You really couldn't just steal his keys or tie him up? Maybe that pays off narratively, but it didn't make me root for the protagonist I'm having to make crawl slowly through air ducts at this point.)

Если подходить к игре только как к источнику головоломок, то они очень разнообразны и в меру сложны. У меня например было 2 мест когда вообще не понимал что сейчас нужно делать, но это субъективно.
Могу похвалить за гибкость инструментария способностей, который (если без спойлеров) открываются джунглях и используется в пустыне - хорошо когда в игре один инструмент используется разнообразно, более чем в одной ситуации.
С точки зрения указанных вдохновителей указанных в описании, то тут игра проигрывает по всем фронтам т.к. в них было куда больше экшена и борьбы, здесь он сведен к минимум, как и перестрелки - они с родни стрельбы по мишеням, а то и вообще огнестрел отбирают на треть игры. Хорошо запомнились 2 погони за игру.
С учетом всего что есть в игре Я скорее не буду, чем буду, рекомендовать эту игру. И перепроходить её врятли когда буду.

Es un juego de puzzles/plataformas, no es ni por si acaso un metroidvania por si se lo imaginan. Tiene una historia bastante lineal con una dificultad decente, algo frustrante aveces cuando te caes de una distancia pequeña y te mueres igual. los puzzles son ingeniosos y variados. La grafica es bonita con un pixel art exquisito y una musica mmmm diria decente (la canción que más me gustó es la del final). Creo que desperdicia mucho potencial como juego y en la escena post creditos quedan muchas dudas que no se resuelven y si sale secuela (cosa que dudo) podrian sacarle provecho a este universo. Según tengo entendido el juego quedó así por falta de presupuesto, motivo por el cual comprendería bastante el por que se desaprovecharon tantos recursos buenos del juego, principalmente su universo y mecanicas que daban a pulir mucho más. Conclusión? buen juego si quieres un desafío mediano y corto en duración.

Очень красивый платформер. Прекрасная пиксельная графика, шикарнейший звук и музыкальное сопровождение, простой, но интересный сюжет и порой нелёгкие головоломки. Сам проходил эту игру примерно 4 раза: 2 из них на свитче, 2 на стимдеке. Несмотря на порой душный геймплей в виде дотошного платформинга и муторных головоломок, это очень приятная и атмосферная игра, которую вполне себе можно пробежать залпом или растянуть на несколько вечеров.

The Way ist ein schöner Puzzler mit interessanter und spannender Story und bisher einer der würdigsten Vertreter dieses Genres (Another World-ish/Flashbackin-ish?)
Die Puzzle sind selbsterklärend, aber nicht zu einfach. Ich musste bei 2 Passage etwas nachlesen, da es bedingt durch die Grafik nicht so direkt sichtbar war - z.b. sichtbarkkeit bzgl. offener Tunnel usw. Aber im ganzen tatsächlich ein Meisterwerk.
Die Musik ist so passend, so athmosphärisch. Und die deutsche Fassung tatsächlich gut gelungen. Einzig die Lesbarkeit der Schrift (kontrast - hart rot, hart grün) ist etwas schwer zu erkennen, wenn man nicht direkt vor dem Screen sitzt & vor allem ist die Geschwindigkeit für die Darstellung der Texte zu hoch. Aber das sind nur kleine Sachen, nicht der Rede wert...

This game is so good. If you like an emotional story, alien/futuristic themes, and pixel art, then this game is a must play. Sometimes the puzzles can drag on, but the rest of the game makes up for it. It is 100% worth the money, and even better if you can get it on sale (it goes like 90% off pretty often so keep an eye out).

解密和操作其实还不错，以下是我个人感觉的缺点：没有中文；存档点太远（实在是很折磨）；键盘操作射击手感很奇怪；最重要也是我给差评的原因：存档会崩，五个小时好不容易过了神庙一直loading就进不去游戏了，删了档重新打了一个小时又崩了，实在玩不下去了。
总结：如果比较幸运没有崩存档的情况再加打折还是可以玩一下的，但过程会比较折磨。不建议原价买。
The game looks cute, has a nice story, I like the thing with the memories and the sadness behind it, I like the cutsie characters and the whole premise.. but the experience is ABYSMAL, I can't even begin to explain how unsatisfying is to play the game, solve the puzzles and navigate the world (especially if you have to do jump tricks in a game that doesn't have good controls). It should have been just a couple of puzzles and a narrative game with minimal hustle. The first section of the game is great just because of this. The sections with the flying robots? The sand worm? The slide? The power stations - the furnace at the southern station bugged and the things wouldn't even shoot fire so I can complete it!! Sorry, if I can't even complete the game due to the nature of it I can't in good faith recommend it to anyone else. I'm happy I bought it less than a euro.

10/10. I cried multiple times. This is what a masterpiece of a game looks like. The story is beautiful, emotional, and strung through every moment of the game. The sci-fi genre is beautiful, the style, everything. I wish there were more like this. Reminds me a lot of epic sci-fi worlds like Hyperion or Foundation.

L'histoire est touchante, et elle donne envie d'aller jusqu'au bout afin de découvrir complètement l'aventure.
Aller jusqu'au bout, tient parlons-en... C'est difficile !!! Et il faudra te battre pour y arriver, où avoir quelques guides sous le coude. En effet, [b][i]The way[/i][/b] c'est du pur Die and Retry ! Tu n'as qu'une vie donc pas le droit à l'erreur, et c'est des énigmes tout le long du jeu. D'ailleurs pour résumer, le jeu n'est que cela. Mourir et recommencer encore et encore à travers beaucoup d'énigmes dans de magnifiques décors colorés et pixelisés. Le tout avec une trame narrative qui te donne envie d'aller jusqu'à la fin pour la découvrir.
Personnellement quelques défauts me laisse un avis mitigé. Les mécaniques du jeu sont bien trop énervantes et mal dosées. Les énigmes sont clairement tirées par les cheveux ! Vraiment, par moment tu ne comprends strictement rien du tout, c'est lourd. Sans guides j'aurais surement abandonné. Quelques bugs manette très minimes. Il m'a fallut réassigner la touche TIRER plusieurs fois à chaque lancement du jeu. Malgré cela, je suis content d'avoir pu le terminer à 100% et d'avoir vue les deux fin.

I recommend the game but there are some caveats.
Last chapter was a bit broken- the game just crashed when entering the final level (just after tincan was wounded) :(. Fortunately after a 4th restart it managed to load the final chapter.
The graphics are cool and reminescent of the "heart of darkness", detailed and beautiful, a but a bit more low res :). There is a great scifi atmosphere, and some very good synth music. I liked the game a lot. Came here mainly for the puzzles, which are mainly cool, some are more miss than hit, especially ones where You have to be precise in your movement apart from realising the trick to them. There is some precision platforming that can be a bit much sometimes. Dexterity driven challanges (race with the alien for example) are fiddly and seem unfair, even if you manage to finish them. They are unforigving and a slight error means you're dead (and have to complete the entire challanging section from scratch). A bit annoying and frustrating. The dex/action sequences are why I almost didn't recommended/finish the game, they left me with a bad feeling even after I finished them. I imagine they might be a big problem for someone who requires accessibility options in their action games.
The ending a bit underwhelming and sad, but a solid one.
I've enjoyed the game overall, but there were some low moments
I rarely review games before completing them, most of the time even a review it´s the final step before unistalling tons of games for me, when I trully feel there´s nothing more to experience about it, that´s when I trully think my oppinion is informed enough to be shared. With The Way though I have to make an exception, cause I understood a long time ago that I will never complete it. The negative reviews are correct, this game is utterly frustrating, it has never being patched despite the multiple complains and probably never will, remaining as uncompleted for most players, specially since it lacks steam cloud and therefor unless you take your own messures, losing your progress is a posibility and you simply wouldn´t want to repeat any of the frustrating, difficult and time sensitive puzzles you may have manage to overcome allready.
But why the positive rating then? Becuase this game is as beutiful and well design as frustrating. The art style is used masterfully alongside some really good designs for an alien world that is completely unique. The story is presented with such simplicity yet care that takes you back to your childhood games if you happen to be a little older, where the limitations of hardware and sofware would force devs to get creative on how to present a narrative. And it´s difficult not to get hooked precisely due to the puzzles being kind fo hardcore, the more you progress things escalate and there´s a point of no return where the game would have capture you enough to desire finishing it. It trully manage to pay a heck of a homage to the games it clearly draws inspiration like Flashback and Another World.
Overall I think this puzzle action platformer needs to be experienced, again, the only drawback it´s the fact you may not be able to experience it entirely. There are a series of specific puzzle that have become notoriously infamous for the community, some are more doable with either patience or a guide and others less so depending on the type of player you are. But it´s also super cheap when it´s on sale, as I write this review it´s on a sale for 0,89, that´s a crazy bargain even if you don´t manage to complete it. I think I paid a similar price and have 7 hours registered, when I got stuck I decided to watch on youtube the rest of the game to see the ending and sucks I wasn´t able to get there but I did enjoy the story still even if I wasn´t making those final steps.
This is an abandonded game with bugs to stay. Punishing but rewarding. Puzzles are a bit underexplained. Has a really low price on sale, under 1 euro, which is a good deal.
C'est un bon jeu de puzzle et de platforme, très inspiré d'Another World. L'ambiance cyber-noir est bien retranscrite et la bande son est vraiment agréable. Niveau visuel, le pixel art est propre et très bien animé. Le gameplay, bien que classique et légèrement rigide, reste efficace. L'histoire, bien que déjà vue, est simple mais attachante. En revanche, le boss final est un peu trop facile, et l'attente de 5 minutes pour la fin des crédits, qui affiche les contributeurs, est un peu longue

The Way feels very immersive, it has great artistic design and atmosphere.
It's an adventure game and a puzzle-heavy platformer.
I haven't played the games that inspired it, but the retro sensibility is obvious and feels authentic.
If you like puzzles, adventures, and a sense of wonder it's a good fit.
However, it has one downside for my taste, possibly explained by those retro sensibilities.
It's very die and retry.
You play as a human, grief-stricken, driven by mad resolve, gradually moving from mundane reality into wondrous alien landscapes.
This is conveyed by the gorgeous color palette, and by a sense of scale: functionally, you are a speck.
You have one (1) hit point.
The platforming is fiddly. The game registers your inputs just fine, and it knows how to be responsive, but vertical movement is often based on grabbing ledges, and you have to be precise with the positioning just to move around.
Dropping by more than a few hundred pixels (your character avatar is small relative to the scenery) is death.
If the boundaries of where you can survive aren't quite obvious, you die, retry, until you hopefully have finger memory of what works.
You'll gain a handful of abilities (starting with a gun), which you absolutely need for your survival, but you can only use those when standing and not moving. Cool-downs require you to plan ahead. Moving triggers animations (those ledge interactions), and those also make you a vulnerable target.
Each area is a little tableau, entering one gives you one (1) checkpoint, after that you are generally on your own. (Solving a puzzle occasionally gives another). Whenever you are facing enemies, your extreme vulnerability doesn't much encourage experimentation or improvisation, you have to be patient and repeat what works.
The well realized atmosphere makes it worth persevering. I just wish being a resolute speck didn't involve so much dying.

The puzzles are much more friendly to experimentation.
You'll occasionally need to take notes, I used steam's screenshot and notes functionality which worked out well and saved some backtracking.
Fantastic and beautiful game, there is no reason not to play it, simply amazing.

Played this early on in my steam account life. Ironically I also have Another World, but while that game didn't click with me, this game really did. Great game!
Хорошая сюжетная 2D игра в пиксельном стиле с элементом несложных головоломок, музыкальное сопровождение также хорошее, проходится не очень долго, в общем советую.
