Semblance is a refreshing take for a puzzle platformer. Shaping environments for platforming works and it feels great. The game adds new twists in each of the 3 worlds, they’re just enough without overwhelming the player. There are between 5 and 6 levels in each world and there is a special final area after all of them are cleared. In terms of collectibles, there are 4 types. Mosquitos which usually require some tricky platforming, art on walls to explain the story, essences that are mandatory to complete the game and shrines, the latter are few in quantity and they’re extra hidden. The style is appealing in terms of visuals but they’re brought to life thanks to the excellent sound effects and music. The music is usually minimalistic but when it’s at the forefront, it’s so good.

There are two flaws I’ve noticed. One is not understanding the story at all. As mentioned, the art you can find is supposed to clear things up but it did not work for me. They were very vague, I was also confused about the ending. Granted, it’s not too important for this kind of game but I would at least like to know the basics. And finally, one puzzle maybe two at most felt bullsh*t imo. The solution for the one I’m thinking about (in the third world) is very precise and narrow. It’s the only one I couldn’t figure out. When I looked up the solution online, I couldn’t believe what was required to solve it. Btw, I’ve read some reviews complaining about the controls but I don’t understand where it’s coming from. I played with a DualShock 4 controller, maybe others tried to play the game with a mouse and keyboard.

Honestly, I enjoyed the game immensely. It might be on a small budget, something that can be noticed if you care too much about these things. But it’s a well designed game that offers something different. I absolutely recommend the game if you’re looking for an original puzzle platformer that is small in scope and knows when to stop. The normal price of €10 feels fitting but it’s on sale often too. It took me less than 5 hours to complete the game and get all the achievements. They amount to finding all the collectibles and playing every level.

The game is a bit janky but it's not a big deal. The puzzles aren't that difficult but some require some precise jumps and timing. There are collectibles but not enough indication where to find the ones you missed.

This was my third play through (first on Steam), which took me less than 2 hours even though I had forgotten all the puzzles. So it's more about gaining intuition for the abilities and techniques.

Underrated puzzle gem, with such a unique mechanic
It had great visuals, music, level design, and decent story
My only gripe is that it could be a bit annoying and finicky, especially with it's controls
And I wish the story and atmosphere was more coherent
Final world felt disconnected from the rest, and the story ended with a bit of a cliffhanger
But for 2$ on sale it is an absolute no brainer, go play this

The twist in this puzzle platformer is an ingenious one: you use the blob-like protagonist to dash into and reshape/move the platforms themselves in order to solve puzzles and progress. The puzzles can be tricky, and once you’ve worked out what to do, and moulded the environment to enable you to reach your goal, the execution of the inputs often demand some relatively quick reflexes. The movement is on the floaty end of the spectrum, but absolutely serviceable. The art is minimalist and pleasant, if a little banal. The overall presentation, and the half-hearted whiff of a story, are also a little lifeless. (And there’s the odd glitchy moment here and there). However, the focus is mainly on the platform manipulation mechanic, which feels fun and unique. It’s very cool to see the fabulously contorted platforms you’ve created. As a longtime fan of the platformer genre, it felt so exhilarating being able to bash those platforms into more traversable shapes. I wish I could have done that with the original Super Mario Bros back in the day, and in many a platformer since. This is an original and fun game, especially for fans of the form.

It really pains me to leave a negative review to such an original idea for a game. But in the end, this is all that remains. An original idea and nothing more. The execution of it leaves much to be desired.

The whole premise of the game is really cool and interesting. A [b][i]deformable platformer[/i][/b]. Platforms that can be reshaped in order to gain an advantage, solve puzzles which seem impossible at first glance and even move through the world by exploiting this feature. Reminds me a little of The Floor is Jelly. But when it comes to the implementation of this concept, there are a number of problems.

[b] Puzzle design[/b]. The puzzles themselves have little to do with actual puzzles and requiring your brain to solve them and more with to do with precise timing, coordination and repetition. This is fun only in the first hour (at most 1.5 hours) of gameplay. From there on it becomes repetitive and frustrating. The game quickly turns into "press these keys quickly and hope the platform deforms as you need it to. If not, restart the puzzle". I have played a decent number of very good puzzle games in my life. This ain't it.

[b] Lack of diversity[/b]. The game world itself is very repetitive. Although I admit I have only played the first two worlds, it was more than enough to notice a pattern. The second world is literally a reskin of the first world of the game, but with a different color:

[*] The dangerous obstacles remain the same but with a different color.

[*] The same pattern of [spoiler] jumping into portal trees, collecting a some light orbs after a few exhausting puzzles and after collecting all the orbs from all the portal trees, you complete the world [/spoiler], then moving on to the next world.

This kind of monotony makes you feel as if you replay the first world/level over and over again, without making any meaningful progress and, if you do this enough times (as many times as there are levels) you win the game, all while someone keeps playing with the settings, changing colors and skins. Very frustrating.

The overall concept presents a lot of opportunity and it could have been exploited in plenty of meaningful and fun ways. Unfortunately, the way this game currently presents, it feels more like an extended demo than an actual complete game, ready to be shipped and sold on Steam. Disappointing.

That said, the overall graphic design and soundtrack are decent and I genuinely hope that the developer of this game reads the negative reviews as well and takes them into consideration for the next game. I see a lot of untapped potential here that simply wasn't fully realized.

Les graphiques sont simples mais très beau dans leurs minimalisme, et j'ai surtout aimé l'originalité du gameplay (où on peut déformer les plateformes et où chaque niveau ajoute sa petite nouveauté pour renouveler les énigmes).
Il n'y a pas d'histoire mais le jeu est suffisement court et dynamique pour que ce ne soit pas un problème.

I really, really tried to give it a fair chance, but Semblance never rises from the status of "cool-idea-on-paper-but-not-enough-to-justify-a-full-priced-game". The premise of shaping the world to complete your platforming goals sounds great, until you start to notice the controls are not finely tuned to challenges/mechanics, and you're suddenly trying to beat the controls, not the levels. This reminds me a lot of Hue, a cool gimmick that become a chore when it's forced into a full game.

The main issues with Semblance are that you can't finely control how you deform the ground, and that later on it requires precise timing without giving you precise controls to achieve that. It's one of those games where you're presented with a puzzle screen (puzzles hardly are bigger than one screen), look at it for a while, and probably is able to figure out what to do in a few seconds, but take minutes to actually achieve it with the given controls. In the worst case, you look at the screen and has no idea what to do, and decide to just try everything to see what sticks.

This is a puzzle design philosophy that is the opposite of great games such as Baba Is You, Snakebird, or Stephen's Sausage Roll. Those games are evergreen puzzle games for a reason, and it is because they take out all the mechanical difficulty of a puzzle (be it precision control or timing), relying solely on BRAINZ. Which is not what could be said of Semblance.

Arguably, the visuals are pretty good with great use of color and minimalistic, geometric environment and props, and the music is quite atmospheric and relaxing, fitting the game's world really well. Some say the best stories are told wordlessly, but Semblance's plot fall to the ground if you try to inspect it too closely. If the gameplay was good, I would be willing to overlook all of that but in the current state, it's not a puzzle game I'd recommend

A short and enjoyable puzzle game. The idea of changing the world is an interesting one and the way the various mechanics are used together is clever. As its description states, it's minimalist, so there's no narrative except for some wall paintings that you have to discover (the trailer shows more of a story than anything in-game). I like the visual style and music.

All the majority of the puzzles require is some thought and basic platforming, but some of them require really fine-grain timing or positioning, which can be frustrating.

Really fun non-combat puzzle game platformer with interesting mechanics. The learning curve isn't very steep, and I like that we're always introduced to any new mechanics with some simple puzzles first before progressing in difficulty. I greatly appreciate when there aren't any combat aspects to a game, and the fact that dying doesn't actually matter here. If you mess up, you can always reset your squish and the puzzle elements, so it's very low-stakes and relaxing, while the puzzles are sufficiently difficult so as to maintain your interest. The art style is also so cute. I really like this!

Play as gelatinous creature and bend terrain to your will. Puzzles are interesting enough and makes you put your grey cells in motion. To complete some challenges you have to think outside the box. Not every terrain can be morphed and you can revert any changes you made. Story tells about organic and crystal like lifeforms and how they coexisted however something changed. Soundtrack is deep. Visuals are simple but looks organic and somewhat alive. Overall great puzzle platformer and you have to play it before you die that's all.

Want to recommend the game cause the first world was a blast. Even the second world was mostly pretty awesome, but after getting to the first puzzle of the last zone in the second world I am stuck because I don't have the reflexes necessary to complete a timing puzzle. I know exactly what I have to do, watched a tutorial and everything, but the controls and timing are too tight for me to complete it.

Я бы сказал, что это интересная игра с интересной механикой, но именно мне она не так что бы понравилась. Я быстро устал от визуального стиля, периодических багов в виде зависания персонажа на одном месте и общей однообразности-монотонности без какого-либо повествования. Ну и это не баг, но немного раздражало все время не очень приятное управление этой слизью(то скользит где не надо, то прилипает когда нужно быстрей уйти от опасности). Даже если у игры нет какой-то интересной истории, это можно компенсировать интересным гейм-плеем, но он меня не увлек так, что бы игра понравилась, разве что сами головоломки с изменением физики окружения частично развлекли. В общем, Я поставил ей 6 из 10 на Метакритике. И раз тут нет средней оценки то будет палец вниз, потому что на рекомендацию не тянет. Тем более за эту цену. Если словить по скидке - ну может разве что если ты любитель потрогать любую необычную игру, или твой список игр на головоломки уже исчерпан.

Recomendo. É um jogo bem simples, mas com mecânicas interessantes. Os quebra-cabeças não são tão complexos, com a maioria sendo apenas uma repetição de um conceito previamente apresentado. É um bom jogo pra relaxar e jogar despretenciosamente. Da pra finaliza-lo em umas 4 a 6 horas. Para finalizar o jogo e pegar todas as conquistas eu levei um pouco mais de 11 horas.

A charming little puzzle platformer. I though the mechanics were different and interesting. It's fairly short, but it doesn't overstay its welcome or pad for playtime. There were a few frustrating parts that were kind of skill intensive, but nothing insurmountable. Some fun collectibles. The plot was, uh, there? As far as I could tell.
Overall, a solid puzzle platformer with clever mechanics and fun puzzles. I got it on sale, but I think it's worth the price for the quality of the experience.

the game was pretty good, although i would expect this kind of thing from a cheaper game. the puzzles were pretty well designed, although i felt like there was an occasional really easy puzzle for some reason. the game is fairly janky which i don't appreciate in games of this price. i also thought the music in the game was interesting.

this game has all sorts of collectibles, so i hope you like those. first of all, the normal puzzles you have to complete to progress have collectibles as the goal, which i have no problem with because they are all obviously placed and the game tells you how many you have yet to collect. that being said, the game also has "shrines", which are collectibles, except they are purposefully hidden, and even though you can tell how many shrines each zone has, if you want to collect them all you are forced to scour levels for them. there is also another collectible that comes in the form of flying insects you have to kill. these insects are placed in levels in a way that is often obvious, yet outside of levels, it is impossible to tell which levels have these collectible insects in them. so if you don't have the achievement for smashing every insect, all you can do is play through every level again. and hey, one of those insects isn't so obviously placed. in fact, it is almost completely hidden and impossible to find! wow collectibles are so fun, right? if the walking around in this game was funner, i might mind less. but looking for all the collectibles in this game made it obvious how boring it is walking around in this game. the environments don't have any variation really, except for the four zones that basically just have a palette swap. walking is also pretty slow even when you include the dash. walking around not being fun is not usually an issue in puzzle platformers, but this game loves a good large open area, not to mention all the walking around in places you've already been you are going to be doing. in fact, the whole level select areas seem a bit unnecessary. why are there puzzles in the zone select areas and the area select areas? i think it was to squeeze a little extra gameplay into the game so you aren't just walking through a flat landscape although it has the side effect of making walking through these areas just a little extra unnecessarily annoying.

i noticed certain settings were lacking from the settings menu, which is a bit annoying. no key binding. also there are only two graphics settings: "fastest", and "recommended", which, presumably, is identical to "fastest", so that is just epic.

i would definitely recommend this game if it was free. it seems pretty dang short. this game isn't offensive to the senses or anything. if you are a completionist, you will be irritated by this game. several of my 7.5 hours were spent walking around and scanning the screen because i am a completionist. if you aren't a completionist, you may find the game quite short.

Semblance es un innovador juego de puzzles y plataformas 2D con una premisa muy interesante, en lugar de ser nosotros los que nos adaptamos a un intrincado escenario será el escenario el que deberá adaptarse a nosotros, a base de golpes. El mundo en que habita Squish, nuestro protagonista, se está cristalizando y deberemos recoger una serie de "esencias" escondidas para limpiar esta amenaza corrupta. Recorreremos distintos biomas con forma de árboles, adquiriendo nuevas habilidades y mecánicas que nos permitan progresar resolviendo numerosos rompecabezas basados en físicas. Las pinturas rupestres que nos encontramos ocultas en los escenarios irán narrando una historia algo abstracta, pero que nos da a entender que existe un conflicto abierto entre las criaturas de los distintos biomas. Parece ser que algún ser especialmente rencoroso procedente del bioma de cristal es el responsable detrás de la corrupción que se está esparciendo por el resto de mundos y será cosa nuestra ponerle fin a tan desastrosa situación a medida que limpiamos cada bioma.

[h2]Jugabilidad / Apartado técnico[/h2]
El mundo de Semblance se compone de superficies duras y blandas, siendo estas últimas la piedra angular de la aventura. Gracias a la habilidad de Squish de lanzarse con fuerza en cualquier dirección podremos moldear estas estructuras más endebles a nuestra voluntad. Por ejemplo, si queremos alcanzar un saliente podremos elevar alguna plataforma golpeándola por debajo para crear un montículo o ir "escalando" a base de golpear y crear abolladuras en paredes vertical. Las opciones y puzzles son variados y su resolución dependerá de la disposición de las estructuras blandas que nos encontremos y el ingenio que le pongamos. Si nos equivocamos siempre podremos "resetear" la superficie para que vuelva a su posición original e intentar el puzzle de otra forma.
Más adelante en la aventura, Semblance añade nuevas mecánicas, como deformarnos nosotros mismos, pudiendo adquirir la forma de un "plato" o de un "palillo", lo que nos confiere nuevas mecánicas de movimiento, imprescindibles para resolver ciertos rompecabezas. También encontraremos láseres que pueden matarnos al contacto, haces de luz que resetean la forma de una estructura o zonas donde no podremos impulsarnos, en general, distintas mecánicas para plantearnos puzzles más o menos complejos y que nos obligarán a pararnos a pensar. Además de las esencias, podremos encontrar pinturas ocultas y cazar una serie de mosquitos que actúan a modo de coleccionables.

[h2]Valoración[/h2]
Semblance es una aventura breve, completarlo puede llevar 2 o 3 horas, sin embargo se siente muy original en todo momento. Sus mecánicas no son frecuentes en otros videojuegos y lo cierto es que me ha mantenido entretenido de principio a fin. Cierto es que la movilidad del personaje puede ser complicada, especialmente cuando cambiamos de forma, pero no es complicado adaptarse y pillarle el tranquillo, una mera cuestión de prueba y error. Una curiosidad de Semblance es que su principal mecánica de moldear el entorno surgió a raíz de un bug o error que encontraron los desarrolladores durante su elaboración, la cual les gustó tanto que decidieron construir el juego en base a ella. Funciona perfectamente en Steam Deck.
Lo salvaría de un incendio! 👨‍🚒👍🔥

Its a nice puzzle platformer that sells itself with its deformable environment. As a platformer, the deformable platforms are indeed a unique mechanism in my opinion and it feels satisfying to move in the game. As a puzzle game, I don't think that this features made this game stand out.

The puzzles themselves aren't too hard but they aren't trivial either, I bought this for a day-long train trip and it was a decent way to spend some time. For that, it's perfect, otherwise I don't think that I would play it to be honest.

The game is only $1 until the 22nd of August, which is a reasonable price for this game imo. The 10 bucks they would charge originally is waaay too much.

游玩印象：
作为一个闯关类游戏（收集一个“精华”算一关），挑战性很强，需要一定的操作；但可惜有相当数量的关卡需要玩家大量的抠细节，实质性内容却很少，容易感到无聊，过关后成就感不强。
即使你是一个闯关类游戏的狂热爱好者，也建议慎重购买，几块钱的话应该也无所谓。
游戏特性：
1.游戏中角色经常会卡入地形
2.（空格）跳跃过程中不能左右移动，局限性大
3.BGM的初始音量比较低，调到近30比较合适

It was fun to start but I do not like some of the puzzles to the point I refuse to finish this one. I looked up a guide video eventually to help me along and seeing the solution I'd have to do on one puzzle was just unacceptable. I'm giving this one a pass and a removal off my list.

I don't know why other reviewers say the puzzles are difficult, they are somewhat easy, also controllers are responsive no issues there as others mention. The problem with this game is that it gets boring real fast and it stays like that, at least it was super cheap during sale.

Not going to lie, for a $1 game on sale, Semblance is a pretty decent puzzle platformer!

The puzzles are well crafted and either require to mold the terrain or be agile enough to precision jump.
Tricky but not very hard puzzles.

I like puzzle games that offer a different perspective like Gorogoa, Monument Valley or Framed.
I'd say Semblance falls into the same family/category as Portal or Qube.

Best played with a controller.

Semblance is a great game with deformable terrain. I found it a bit disappointing that platforms can only be influenced in one direction and you can't bend them in several ways. There was also the occasional bug where you could get stuck in a platform. But otherwise the game was a lot of fun, even if it was a bit short.

Эта игра поистине увлекает. Механика изменения формы, хоть и звучит довольно просто, но является действительно уникальной. От Semblance я много не ждал, но игра смогла удержать меня увлечённым до самого конца. Загадки разнообразны и иногда заставляют неплохо подумать.
Я получил добротный, хоть и непродолжительный, сборник головоломок, которые было весело и интересно разгадывать. Потому эта игра точно стоит того, чтобы её пройти.

斬新な発想のパズルゲーム
難易度も優しめで、あまり詰まる所はない
解法がわかってもアクションのせいで失敗することが何回かあったがすぐ直前からリトライできるのでそこまで苦ではなかった
とはいえクリアにはアクションが必須なので、完全に理詰めすればアクションなしでクリアできるゲームが好きな人は向かないかもしれない
アクションの内容もそこまで難しい要求はされないので基本的にはおすすめ

Petit jeu très sympathique à faire. Le jeu n'est pas très long mais les mécaniques d'énigmes sont intéressantes et chaque monde apporte une nouvelle mécanique de jeu. Les énigmes ne sont pas redondantes et la difficulté est bien jaugé pour que ça ne soit pas frustrant. L'ambiance générale du jeu est agréable et la direction artistique et très cool.

Seuls bémols du jeu sont les contrôle, l'absence des directions diagonales est parfois embêtante et l'histoire qui est présente mais trop cryptique pour moi. Malgré tout je recommande, c'est une expérience courte et agréable.

Solid puzzle game. Puzzles feel fair, teaching you the rules and then telling you to bend them in every way you can in order to progress. Largest downside is the controls, unfortunately. Your little blob will often move too far regardless of whether you are using an analog stick or DPad, leading to frustrating deaths even when you know what to do. Other than that, the game works well.

Okayish puzzle but why no key-binding?
For some levels, the game requires precise world-shaping that need serious accurate which although you know how to solve it, yet will take lots of attempt to 'do it right'. It would be great if some accessibilities such as rebind key or time slow are added, or just make the level a bit less accurately necessary.

Pretty good, story doesn't make much sense and theres no achievement for actually beating the game which is weird? Only thing I haven't done is found the last mosquito. Game play is great, it gets kind of infuriating at times but in a good way I'd say.

"Semblance" is quite a nice albeit quite short puzzle platformer in an enigmatic and lush world, where you play as an amorphous being that deforms itself and the world around it to stop a crystaline corruption.
The physic-based puzzle-solving and jumping-passages are quite unique and while they can get a little wonky and glitchy at times, they still offer a fresh and enjoyable experience.

Overall a good entry and worth a look for genre fans and passers-by.

Свои 0.62$ на распродаже игра явно стоит, не что-то прям мега взрывное, но сделано неплохо. Загадки в меру сложные, контента по ощущениям часов на 3-5. Крепкий середнячёк в своём жанре.

You can shape (most of) the playable area by bumping it and trying to solve puzzles. I liked every new mechanic; lasers, no-dash areas, reformer beams, reshaper walls. Some puzzles want you from precise moves but overall great puzzle game.

Buen juego de puzzles. es un juego cortito si no te atascas mucho. yo solo me atasque en 4 puzzles pero aun asi tarde o temprano los logre completar. el juego me gusto y lo consegui a buen precio en las rebajas. solo tuve unos cuantos bugs menores como atravesar el suelo pero nada grave que me rompa la partida o algo asi.
si te gustan los juegos de puzzles esta es una compra a tener en cuenta en las rebajas de steam

A nice, short game (perfected in 6 hours) with a unique concept which is very well executed. Puzzles are varied and interesting without being frustrating. The mechanics work well most of the time (and when you get stuck or get an out of bounds, which is rare, there is a neat reset button in the menu) and are satisfying to use.

The level design in particular deserves praise: everything is explained to you without a single line of text, and the game makes sure you need to understand the different mechanics in order to progress. I especially like little details like the mosquitoes annoying buzzing, which help you understand they can (and should) be destroyed.

Finally, the visuals are really well done, mysterious and intriguing, and I liked every second I spent in this little world.

总体来说还算不错的一款2D平台解谜游戏。
画面干净清新音乐舒缓。
剧情没有文字，只用一些壁画来表现。
关卡设计主要围绕改变纯黑色的关卡地板位置和形态以及主角的高中矮三个形态之间的切换来进行，没有什么太突出的创新，但完成度还比较高。除了个别关卡时间窗口或角度卡得有点（跟其他关卡不成比例地）过严之外，大部分内容难易适中。
不追求全收集的话大概3-4小时通关。
打折的时候可以买来换换心情调剂一下。

This is a really clever puzzle-platformer where you get to reshape platforms as you see fit - as long as you can do it without running into spikes. Or lasers. Or reset beams. Or...

Seriously, it's hard to explain exactly what's so satisfying about smashing yourself into a platform, repeatedly, so that you can reach places that you couldn't jump to. It's awesome. I'm currently on my second full playthrough and I'm still loving it.

I did get a review copy for free, uh, 5 years ago. Coming back to it now has been a lot of fun and if I somehow lost access to this Steam account, I'd buy it with actual money so I could play it yet again. It's that great.
