[b]The First Tree[/b] ist ein ruhiger [b]Walking-Simulator[/b] von Solo-Entwickler [b]David Wehle[/b] aus 2017.

Wir spielen eine Füchsin in der [b]Third-Person-Perspektive[/b], durchleben mit ihr dieses kurze und entspannte Abenteuer, das im verschneiten Alaska beginnt. Aber es gibt auch noch einen "menschlichen Teil", ein junger Mann und eine Frau ([b]Joseph[/b] und [b]Rachel[/b]) unterhalten sich zu Beginn, der Mann erzählt der Frau von einem Traum, in dem er von einem Fuchs geträumt hat.
Die Rahmengeschichte ist nett gemacht, nimmt kaum Raum ein, ist nur eine schöne Vorlage für das Spiel.

Die [b]Grafik[/b] ist sehr pixel-stylish, ist kein ausgesprochener Augenschmaus, passt aber gut zu Setting und Story. Das [b]Sounddesign[/b] ist solide gemacht, auch der [b]Soundtrack[/b] ist schön zusammengestellt.
Die Sprachausgabe gibt es lediglich in [b]Englisch[/b] O-Ton, es gibt aber deutsche Untertitel.
Ein normaler Durchlauf des Spiels dauert um die 2 bis maximal 3,5 Stunden. Leute, die das Spiel mit allen [b]14 Achievements[/b] vervollständigen wollen, sollten (auch ggf. mit Zuhilfenahme von Guides) 3 bis maximal 5 Stunden einplanen.

Die [b]Story[/b] hat ein wenig Drama, ist aber insgesamt nett, die [b]Atmosphäre[/b] in der stilisierten Grafik ist schön, auch den [b]Soundtrack[/b] mag ich sehr. Leider gibt es auch [b]Kritik[/b], denn die Steuerung (es geht sowohl mit Tastatur und Maus, es gibt auch [b]Controller-Unterstützung[/b]) ist an einigen Stellen, gerade wenn es um Rennen und Springen geht einfach nervig gemacht. Zum Glück immer nur kurz, sodass es mir den Spielspaß nicht verdorben hätte...

[b][u]Fazit[/u]:[/b]
Ich empfehle dieses zauberhafte [b]Abenteuer[/b] allen Fans von schönen Geschichten und Atmosphären. Ich finde den [b]regulären Vollpreis[/b] [u]noch okay[/u], würde das Spiel persönlich eher als Kauf im [b]Steam-Sale[/b] empfehlen. Bei 50% Rabatt oder gar mehr ist das Angebot für mein Empfinden [u]fair und angemessen[/u]!
Allen, die sich ebenfalls ins Abenteuer stürzen, wünsche ich ein paar ruhige und schöne Stunden. Sollte jemand besonderen Gefallen an dem Spiel finden: es gibt seit Mai 2025 auch einen [b]Teil 2[/b].

steamはもちろん他のプラットフォームでもプレイして実績も全て解除して全く気づかなかったのですが、隠しエンディングがあったんですね(汗)つい今しがた見ました。steam版はどうかわかりませんが、字幕がなく内容が英語で理解が難しいですが、今まで見てきた内容とはかなり異なります。
発売からかなり経ってイースターエッグも出したのに、こんな隠し球が残ってたなんて悔しいやら情けないです。

Есть интересные решения но я бы предложил рассказать эту историю в формате короткометражки или типа того.
Итак почему "нет" когда вообще-то это жанр является чуть-ли не моим любимым:
Криво натянутые, нередко одноцветные текстуры рельефа.
Сырые анимации.
Кривое управление камерой.
Чудовищно низкая и нерегулируемая дальность прорисовки травы.
Загрузочные экраны между локациями. Учитывая очень низкую нагрузку игры на железо переходы спокойно можно было сделать бесшовными.
К чему вообще был этот паркур и какого хрена у лисы даблджамп.

我买这个游戏之前看了一下测评，大家都对这个游戏褒贬不一，说什么缺乏游戏性，没有明确游戏目的。
感觉大家都有一个习惯，就是游戏不给目标就不会玩游戏了，只享受获得的成就感，而不懂得享受获得的过程。这也是为什么放置类游戏那么受欢迎，而为什么会出现游戏代打，这显得游戏的过程变得越来越不重要了。如果这时候出现一个这样的游戏，没啥收集的要素，也没啥社交要素，那注定是没法被大多数人所接受的。

然后再来评价一下整体的游戏体验，小狐狸挺可爱的，操作也很好上手，风景也挺好看，尤其是第三张地图的那个下山的场景和星空鹿那里，太美了uwu，感觉玩这个游戏就是为了看风景的，没有任何进度压力，bgm也很好听，真的是直击心灵，跑完图之后心情也愉悦了很多，或许这就是游戏存在的意义吧···

整体游戏体验也可以给到夯

В итоге вся эта прохладная история, которая по недоразумению называется здесь сюжетом, представляет собой вымученную псевдоэмоциональность.
От меня, видимо, ожидают, что я от очередного описания «сложного детства» должен немедленно разрыдаться прямо на месте.
Я могу простить эту за лу пу разработчикам, если им всем по 16 лет.

никого вообще не смущает, что у лисы отец - волк?

The first ten minutes of the game were the best precisely because I had no idea what lay ahead was an endless series of cries accompanied by violin and piano.
In the end, this entire tepid story, which is mistakenly called a plot here, is nothing but forced pseudo-emotionality.
Apparently, they expect me to burst into tears right there and then at yet another description of a "difficult childhood."
I can forgive the developers for this blunder, if they're all 16 years old.
And secondly:
Doesn't anyone even care that a fox has a wolf as a father?

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I've found this SO difficult to enjoy. The controls feel awkward at times, and the puzzles are very simplistic and repetitive. The story hasn't resonated with me emotionally, and the overall experience feels just sooooo painfully SLOW, I honestly can't get through it </3. If I had to give it a rating, it would be 4/10 at best for the concept. Sadly, everything else just didn't land for me :(

This game can be divided into two parts. The first is the gameplay (the actual game) and the audiobook that starts playing literally after every action you take in the game.
The audiobook isn’t the worst, but the game that this audiobook is played over is one of the most boring, cheaply made, and simply terrible games I’ve ever played.

Let’s start with the content. What kind of content does this game even have?
You just have to find some stars, dig up random objects that are supposedly connected to the main character of the audiobook, and so on. All of this takes place in a completely empty location where there’s basically nothing except three trees.

Honestly, the game looks like a cheap Unity project thrown together in one or two hours. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what it is. Of course, sound in a game is important, but the game itself is important too. The audio is good but the game is garbage.

Simple game with some nice visuals, but boredom can set in as even the run speed is rather slow and plodding for the fox.

It's one of those walking sims that tries to get all philosophical with a discussion while you play.

I was more interested in completing some backlog, so I muted the app in the volume mixer and played my Devil May Cry custom soundtrack on Youtube. However, I did read some of the mumbo-jumbo the characters were spouting as I had turned on the subtitles for laughs, but it turned out I wasn't laughing at the end as I realised I needed another playthrough as the secrets are basically impossible to find without a guide.

Recommended for chilling, but if you're a completionist then read a guide first. Due to the boredom factor, I'd say don't pay full price either. Just being honest.

Controls are a bit janky and the levels can feel vast and empty when you're just holding W trying to find the next story beat, but the voice acting and writing kept me invested throughout the two-hour runtime. If you're in the right headspace — especially if you've dealt with loss or complicated family relationships — this game will likely resonate deeply; just go in knowing it's more of an emotional experience than a game. Recommended, ideally on sale and with a quiet evening to yourself.

The First Tree is a wonderful yet sad tale about a fox going on a journey to find her cubs while a man named Joseph looks back on his rock relationship with his late father. This game was really enjoyable and made me realise how important those around you are, and that spending time with them is worth more than solid gold and diamonds.

The overall gameplay was great, a lot of walking but I loved the story which kept me going, took just shy of 6 hours to fully complete all the achievements, I wish there was something to make me aware of the secret ending tied to the "Completionist" achievement as I ended up missing it, thankfully there was videos so I still experienced it in some way but it was a little disappointing not being able to experience it in game since I would've been required to play through the whole thing all over again collecting everything.

In conclusion asides from the disappointment from missing the secret ending, I think the game was really good, I loved the low poly style of the game giving it a retro feel and the music was amazing, I'd give the game a solid 8/10.

Very much enjoyed the game. Got it for very acceptable and good price. Loved a lot abt it, graphics - keeping it simple but looking really good, story - really emotional, iinteresting and for short game really well implemented, liked the connection between the fox story and speaker's story, music & soundtracks - really imersive and it collides with the feelings you feel in particular moment of game. as a few things i didnt like were that there was no list/tutorial of what to do, so sometimes i was confused and didnt know what to do, map would ve been really good thing too, but overall the negative is way smaller than the good stuff abt it. I'm very mixed on this "game". Cause like others have pointed out this is almost more of a visual novel than anything else. The pacing is very slow and the puzzles are more annoying than anything else if you even want to call them puzzles. The steering is weird and janky and honestly the story isn't really that interesting. I was bored during most of the game and probably would not have finished it if I hadn't been streaming it for my ex over discord. Overall this isn't a game I can reccomend as it is now.

A short and beautiful narrative experience, for fans of nature, red fox species, or those who have played Spirit of the North and it's sequel, and or any other games with fox protagonism and exploration. A tale of the past actions and regrets of the narrator (and probably the experiences of the developer) trying to accept the past and face the future after certain events are to come, in the process of recounting a particular dream about a fox mother on a journey in the search of her lost cubs. This game is quite emotional and could tug at the hearts of sentimental players, but it's worth experiencing even if there is not much replay value when you obtain all achievements if you did. The game is not graphically intensive on my
(GeForce GT 1030/i7-3770 ) , and was actually real smooth during those two hours while recording it to my channel. This is a chill and emotional ride that's worth streaming as well. Colorful, detailed scenery, and simplistic animations with decent voice acting and soundtracks.
-A tip for everyone? Try to get all the stars/sparkles scattered around, asides achievements they will be a NEED at the ending of the game. So don't ignore them, they have a meaning.

La història és bona, et endinsa en un viatge que et fa reflexionar sobre la familia i les fases que traveses amb ella.
La música t'acompanya i romàn amb tu al llarg del joc, fent l'experiència molt agradable.
D'altra banda la jugabilitat és una mica tosca i pot ser siga dels únics punts negatius del joc, tot i això és un molt bon joc narativament parlant.

Hands off this game if you simply want to relax or just like animals!

This was a whole waste of my time except for the pretty looking scenery, but don’t expect too much cause let’s be honest the graphics are not the best.
Although it takes two shots on storylines none of them is what you would expect form the light-hearted design. The storyline of the fox is just grim and bleak and definitely nothing for people who want to play a game involving a cute animal because they like them. If you don’t have a complex involving your parents (especially your father) the second storyline, in which you are forced to listen to the whimsy voices of the couple is just annoying.
Poor outcome for a story-driven game with mechanics that surely don’t challenge someone over the age of six! What a design-combination!

But my favourite was the peak of irony in the final scene, where the game that wasted three hours of my precious lifetime tells me, that life is short.

This "game" wasn't really a game and more like a visual novel. Like others have said the movement was slow and tedious, the couple of puzzles (if you can call them that) were extremely basic, and the whole game you have this narration of this guy just sob storying the whole time it's kinda annoying. The environment visuals however were great, but for a game so heavily focused on visuals the animation and control of the fox was a bit janky and that broke immersion for me.
Felt more like a free game, or at least $2-$3 at most, definitely not worth the price point and hence the negative review.

He intentado que The First Tree me guste con todas mis fuerzas, pero es que el juego no lo pone fácil. Entiendo que, sobre el papel, debía sonar muy bien la idea de contar dos historias paralelas: la de un hombre hablándole a su mujer sobre su padre y la de un zorro buscando a sus crías. Pero no funciona. No funciona porque mientras estás escuchando al señor de voz melosa lamentarse por la pérdida de su padre, estás saltando de piedra en piedra recogiendo estrellas con un zorro. Y es que no hacía falta.

Me recuerda mucho al Spirit of the North, el juego visualmente tiene partes buenas y otras que no me convence, el juego tiene dos historias paralelas, una zorra en busca de sus crías y un hijo, son historias muy triste. El juego es corto pero por el precio es mejor pillártelo rebajado.

This is truly a beautiful game, however, I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I don't enjoy giving negative reviews, and I have a lot of respect for a one-person developed game, however, I wasn't able to resonate with this game at all.

I enjoyed the visuals definitely the most within this whole game, throughout the different chapters the game presents a lovely imagery that fits the overall idea well. A few of the chapters that I couldn't help but stop and admire were definitely the snowy area and the stars scene.

Though as beautiful as the game is, I had a lot of frustrations while playing it. Starting off, the jumping/walking is unusual, there's no fast speed so it just became tedious. The voice acting was also questionable at times, where some parts of the dialogue I felt didn't connect with the feeling and story the game was trying to give and made it awkward. The dialogue also felt at times jumping from one thing to the other, where the story felt hard to follow.

Another major frustration was with not having a chapter select mode or a way to go back to certain levels, as if you miss one star for one of the achievements you have to restart all over again, and combined with slow movement felt just unnecessarily punishing.

This game had a lot of potential, but it simply wasn't enjoyable for me. Feel free to buy this game if it's on sale and if you're comfortable with all the reasons I've mentioned before, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. It didn’t resonate with me personally, but I can understand why others might appreciate it, and I’m glad I finished it.

No es raro pensar que un hombre es alguien que no suele abrirse sentimentalmente con los demás. Careciendo en muchas ocasiones de la habilidad para saber expresar sus emociones o pensamientos.
Pero a veces, solo necesitamos a alguien que por lo menos pretenda escuchar lo que tengamos que decir. Es aquí cuando un amigo, familiar, pareja o especialista ayuda mucho a liberarte de ciertas cargas emocionales y de perturbaciones mentales que impiden llevar una vida estable en muchos aspectos...

En "The First Tree" nos encontramos con la historia de Joseph, un muchacho que naturalmente necesita sacarse ciertas espinitas con respecto a su vida. Específicamente lo que abarque la relación con su padre. Tal parece que no fue, hasta su fallecimiento, que pudo reflexionar realmente sobre la evolución de la misma. Cómo, al ir creciendo, se fueron haciendo más distantes o que su padre no era alguien que se mostrase demasiado afectuoso. Generando esto, un cierto sentimiento de abandono o desinterés por parte de Joseph, y con el tiempo hasta no saber nada del otro.
Pero una vez marchándose su padre de este mundo, pudo comprender sobre cómo era realmente aquello. Que el hecho de no mostrar todos estos contactos físicos o palabras cálidas no significaba que lo dejase de amar. Simplemente las personas varían en cuanto a la forma de expresar sus sentimientos. Y claro, lo sabía de primera mano.

Entonces, he aquí un viaje lleno de mucha ternura y nostalgia. A la vez que cierta tristeza por pensar en los que ya no están y no pudimos hacer más por ellos o con ellos.
Corto y sencillo. Lo recomiendo para conocer lo natural que es que un hombre posea una masculinidad sólida y pueda abrirse con cualquiera.

PD: Sí, sé me he saltado el hecho de que hay un Zorro (realmente es hembra) en la portada del juego. Y que en nada de lo que escribí lo menciono. ¡Pero ajá! ¡Fue intencional! 😎 Todo para que esa duda te quede en la cabeza y no querrás dejártela por tanto tiempo. Averigualo y me contás. this game is almost pretty decent. almost.
its beautiful, and though i'm not the target audience of this kind of story it works well for the game.

But its incredibly awkward to control, which massively detracts from the whole experience

for some reason the default speed is snail-pace walking, instead of the "fast" speed, in a world open enough that, even being on the fast walk speed the whole time, most of the points of interest are so far apart that it just feels kind of tedious.

There's minor platforming elements, which are badly implemented. There's a double jump, but for some reason for me they straight up don't trigger at least 1/10 times. There's various platforms where this is more of an issue, with one particular one where I had to make about 8 attempts before the double jump worked. There's also issues where if you fail a jump aiming at a steep surface, you become kinda stuck to the surface but can't move, apart from jumping in a way where you fall a far distance away from where you start and have to climb back up to where that was.

I'm not really the target of this game, but I see the appeal for those who like something like this.
The First Tree is presented kind of like a story being told inside another narrative with a lot of finding key spots in a big open environment.
It's short and sweet but can get somewhat monotonous at times.

I rate this game as 0.50$ out of the approximate 1060$ you would need to spend to take the GameDev unlocked course. It's clearly just random assets that have been combined into a mediocre walking simulator filled with personal trauma. It's closer to an interactive art piece that should be freely distributed than some sort of god given gift to indie game developers that the developer seems to claim it is. The character controller is sloppy, the assets are sloppy, the level design has no clear paths or points of interest and relies mostly on randomly fumbling about a hastily assembled Unity terrain system filled with shading and foliage errors, as well as melodramatic plot points about a fox for no clear reason. Within the first 3 minutes of the game there is a unclear and meaningless metaphor about the baby fox dying representing anything other than a cheap attempt at gaining sympathy.

My final review score is a 0.5/1060. So about 0.04%

I think for me, there was this implication that you would find and rejoice, that this little piece was sad, but that we had to move on to find happiness, but it still never came. (trying not to spoil) but are instead left with heartbreak and 0 happy ending. It's just simply sad. This game broke my heart a little.

On the note of gameplay, as much as I loved hearing little notes from the game developer, there should be an option to skip if you don't want to hear it, or if it's interfering with your immersion.

This game was one of the most heartbreaking adventures I've been on. It was definitely not what I was expecting and I spent a large majority of the two hours it took to finish the story crying off and on. It's a tale of parent and child and one of life and death. I highly recommend playing this but be advised the subject hits hard and can be very upsetting.

I don't think I am the target audience for this game.

This game has things in it that makes it a game. But it fails to land for me personally. This game has exploration with platforming, achievements, collectibles, and a story. I will attempt to break down why its elements didn't work for me.

The exploration/platforming:

Right away you get put into a large feeling world where you have two speeds. Walking [like.. why?] and trotting. Trotting should be the default speed, and there should be some faster movement option to sprint. I wanted to play it like I play all exploration games. Check every nook and cranny, look for secrets, etc. But the slow movement made me just follow the light and obvious intended path to rush to whatever the game wants you to get to.
The jumping feels janky, double jumping doubly so. There was a jump requiring you to get three sets of butterfly boosts to go over a wall that should have been doable with one try. It took three for me, and by then I was all but ready to just not play the game anymore. The fact the butterflies were spaced so far apart and that any jump at all gets rid of them made this unnecessarily difficult. I realized that I was going to miss collectibles and just accepted it because it was more frustrating than what I was willing to put myself through. Adding faster movement, or making the world slightly smaller between points of interest would have fixed this easily. But I continued to give it grace because it's an indie game that looked interesting and was pretty cheap to buy.

Achievements/Collectibles:
I didn't look to see what the achievements were until the end, and they probably are not worth the time it would take to do them unless you just really have nothing better to play. I didn't feel invested enough in the story or gameplay to give completion the time of day.

Story:

I could not empathize or relate to the story at all. In essence it is a story about processing grief by listening to the narrator talk to someone about their past while the player explores a dream he's having. I think this story is meant to resonate with a specific type of person, and that's just not me. There were too many conflicting elements in the game that felt opposite to what the message was. You're supposed to explore and find something important to you, but it's all in vain. You hear this person grieving a lost loved one but in life they were horrible to them the whole time. They talk to their spouse about it and the spouse is trying to make them feel better but it's just doom and gloom. Even the ending part after the dream I sincerely thought the goal was to go into the woods and get mauled by a bear or jump off a cliff. It wasn't that, but it would have felt fitting. I wanted to play a cute game about a fox finding something important. But this is just a story meant to make you feel sad, and maybe hopeful at the end if you got a nice message on the tree. It's just not for me. I guess it's good enough if you can't afford therapy instead. Would have solved 90% of the narrator's problems.

TLDR:
Is a platformer, but not a good one. Not quite bad enough to be a rage game either.
Has collectibles, but they serve more as "yellow paint" than something that feels like you earned it.
Has achievements if you can get past the slow movement and janky controls to 100% the game.
Has a story, but if you don't relate to it, it'll get on your nerves.
Is short enough to rush in less than 2 hours and get a refund, but on sale it's like a dollar so who cares I guess?

Genuinely one of the BEST games I have ever played, I've played this game over multiple times just to see the ending, and every time it brings me to sobbing tears. As of the day I'm writing this review I 100%'ed the game, and found the alternate ending. This sent me into wide mouth, quiet, shocked sobs. I cannot express how much love I have for this game and how much it means to me. Thank you for this seriously gorgeous game. You can be sure I'll be adding more hours onto my play time in the future, even for just replays.

昨天刚全成就通关，特点评一二，个人观点，请以个人体验为实(然，观者多于体验之前，概因4RMB而心悦，故下面是客观分析)
首先，游戏性比较低，你操作狐狸在世界中行走，说是行走模拟器也不算错(毕竟连困难的地形和解谜都没有)。其次地图特别庞大，在游戏中不收集任何东西，从开始跑到结束(最优路线)至少要≥40min。最后，你通关游戏后是没有各章节存档的，而且游戏中也是按章节临时存档的(意思是你某一章做一半退出，就要从这章从头开始。
以上总总，但我以四星做结。
其一，还是对独立创作者的支持
其二，是对其在故事叙述方式上(【意识流】以对白，回忆，幻想方式，打破时间空间限制)突破了传统游戏叙事的线性——这也是大多数玩家对剧情感到迷糊的原因
其三，是其以【父爱】这种常见，却易被忽视的角度入手，更能令人共情。游戏中的小狐狸尸体，荆棘，狼，鹿等皆有暗喻
其四，其【音乐】是游戏中的亮点，反正我是挺喜欢的，【美术(建模)】在现在看来的确粗糙，但可能是我比较喜欢狐狸🦊，挺可爱的，也只最近看完「疯狂动物城2」所以…

An enjoyable short game! The First Tree is a small one person project, a game that tales a 2 hour tale wile the player explores the surrounding as a Fox. The incipit of the narration is a couple discussing a dream the man had, hence the Fox's jorney, but most of the discussion is more of a jump to the protagonist's past. The story is bitter sweet, and the various locations work visually well. There's not much gameplay to speak of, but the game's scope was elsewhere so it is not much of an issue. It's a pleasant small experience!

Je suis un peu mitigée. J'ai joué la majorité du jeu au clavier, et c'était assez laborieux, notamment quand pour faire tourner la caméra. J'ai fini par jouer à la manette, et j'ai trouvé cela beaucoup plus fluide. Je n'ai pas trop apprécié le fait de marcher sans toujours savoir où on va, et certaines étoiles étaient trop compliquées à avoir (au clavier, peut-être qu'à la manette ça aurait été plus simple).

Néanmoins, la musique était belle, tout comme les graphismes. Le passage avec le First Tree m'a tiré quelques larmes, et la partie "6 mois plus tard" m'a laissée perplexe : j'ai vraiment cru qu'il y aurait un screameur (heureusement non). Là aussi, la fin a été émouvante.

Je recommande ce jeu malgré tout (parce qu'il y a une renarde, une histoire, et que c'est émouvant), surtout si vous pouvez utiliser une manette.

The First Tree es uno de esos juegos que no solo se juegan: se sienten. Desde el primer minuto, el mundo se abre ante ti como un sueño silencioso, envuelto en luces suaves y tonos cálidos que parecen abrazarte mientras avanzas. Cada colina, cada árbol y cada rayo de sol tiene una intención emocional tan marcada que es imposible no detenerse simplemente a mirar… y a dejarse llevar.

El juego no te empuja: te invita. Te invita a caminar, a respirar, a contemplar. Como el zorro que guía la travesía, avanzas con pasos suaves por un paisaje que parece construido con recuerdos, con cicatrices, con amor. Y mientras la historia humana se va revelando—dolorosa, íntima, real—cada escena te golpea con una fuerza inesperada, pero profunda y necesaria.

La relación entre exploración y narrativa es tan delicada que a veces parece que el propio bosque te habla.
