A train's whistle sounds in the dead of night. Snow falls on deserted tracks. Somewhere, in the city, a woman prepares to leave on a journey that will change her life. Somewhere, in the country, a man drives to his final destination. A young woman prepares to depart on a journey that will take her into the very heart of darkness. But before she can leave her apartment, there are just a few loose ends she has to tie up... Alex Davenport wakes up on the train. Her travelling companion, Harold Lang, is nowhere to be found. Don, the conductor, isn't exactly being forthcoming as to what's going on. Why are Alex's friends here? Who's the ballerina? Is this a nightmare, or is Alex's hope of waking up simply a pipe dream?

I liked the pixel art and having full voice acting is nice, too. But, well.. the game is really short and the title is misleading. I expected three games, or at least three full episodes, but instead it’s just three short chapters, two of which take place in the same, rather boring location.

The game then ends abruptly, leaving a huge cliffhanger and a lot of things unexplained. Like an appetizer for the real trilogy to come. So, yeah.. this came out more than ten years ago, I seriously doubt we’ll ever see a sequel.

There are almost no real puzzles and while the narrative has some interesting ideas, it’s mostly just confusing.

It's not terrible.. but would I recommend it? No, not really.

An interesting point and click adventure. I love the pixel art and I also really love the protagonist. She's the mood I always feel when I watch spooky bs happens and says what we're all thinking. I wasn't too certain about the game about 2/3rds of the way through but the conclusion really pulls the whole story together. Ended up liking it a fair bit.

Right, lets talk about The Charnel House Trilogy, the game introduce himself as 3 separated books on the game main menu. The true is they are NO NEED and NO enough content for the Books, it would work better if the story was continuous and divided by chapter of one Short Story.

And the experience is not a traditional puzzle adventure, is more a story driven all the puzzles are close and the character almost tell you what to do to proceed in the story,
It s well written, the game construct well the main character Alexis witch I have to give credit to Madaleine Roux her performance is above the others voice actors, she made the game much better because you can relate to her character journey.

I discovery this game by a youtuber review Cannot be Tamed channel, she put this game on the list ranking as an A.
But is too short, but well written story, with only voice actor highlight performance. I dont know why she ranked so high, for me is a NEUTRAL a C .

Here on the Steam says I played for 2.5hhrs, I made some pauses when I was playing, I believe you can finish the game in 2 hrs or less, again the game divide by books give you a illusion that would ll be longer.

Don't go in expecting this to be three games they've combined to sell together because this is at best three chapters of an unfished game two of which you spend on a boring train. Steam says I played for nearly 29 hours, for some reason, but it was 2 hours at most. This should have been the early parts of a longer game but, as is, provide a poor intro to a game that is likely never to be finished.

If you're okay with a short unfinished game, the first chapter seems interesting enough but then the next two is a combination of trying to cram in too much material with too little content. The first chapter we get to know Alex in her apartment and is an interesting enough opening, and then the next, we're on a train with a character we don't know and it very quickly gets into dream sequences and callsbacks to the past but this was for a character we don't know and was just introduced to. As is, the way this game is structured, that middle chapter could be cut and very little would be lost. Next we're on the same train, in the same locations, but for Alex and going through dream sequences but at least we got to know her first. The problem is it feels like they had a fair bit of content planned but are trying to cram it into this short chapter and reusing the same boring train location and mostly same characters and doing it through they boring dream sequences.

Una aventura gráfica de terror bastante corta pero entretenida e intrigante.

La disfrutarás si tienes ganas de pasarte un juego no muy largo en el que la trama es muy lineal y sus puzzles no son complejos.

Me ha gustado:

- La simplicidad del juego en todos los sentidos, manejo, uso de los objetos etc...
- Sus gráficos son pixel art bien detallados, suficiente para un juego de este estilo.

No me gustado:

- Su historia. Aunque es intrigante el final es ambiguo y dependerá de como lo interpretes.

Lo recomiendo sin duda.

Me gustaría poder recomendar este juego pero, objetivamente, no puedo. Gráficamente me ha gustado, y tanto el doblaje como la música son de buena calidad. Sin embargo, es muy corto (lo he terminado en poco más de dos horas) y no es tanto una aventura gráfica como una narración en la cual tenemos muy poco que hacer. Y sí, el argumento es interesante y la atmósfera inquietante, pero a la postre todo resulta muy confuso y todas las preguntas quedan sin responder. Se suponía que todo se resolvería en "Augur Peak", una secuela que casi diez años después sigue sin publicarse. Una pena.

Extraño y fascinante. La historia comienza suavemente, una tarde aburrida de invierno, y va subiendo de tono lentamente. Los puzles son sencillos, pero te invitan a explorar y mantienen la intriga. Lo mejor es el ambiente creado por los entornos, y la propia historia. Aun siendo tan breve, está bien armada y cuida los pequeños detalles: los libros, los diálogos. Ahí hay una historia madura.

I still remember the twist with the neighbour as one of the most random and unnecessary tone shifts I have ever seen. It was such a weird experience to have a game that had kept my interest up until that point lose all its appeal in just one scene. Jim Sterling deserved better. Das mittlerweile 10 Jahre alte Point-and-Click-Adventure lehnt sich in Erzählstruktur und verwirrend mysteriösen Ereignissen stark an Twin Peaks an, was auch im Jahr 2025 noch wunderbar funktioniert.

[b]Inhalieren tut gut - Geschichte und Gameplay[/b]
Wir spielen als Alex, die sich in der ersten von drei Episoden bereit macht, eine Reise nach Augur Peak anzutreten; natürlich sind Schicksalsschläge und nicht verdaute Ereignisse aus der Vergangenheit dabei. Episode 2 und 3 spielen dann im Zug selbst, wobei wir zunächst den Archäologen Dr. Lang begleiten und darauf wieder Alex. Seltsame Fahrgäste, Zeitsprünge und Metaphern sind an der Tagesordnung. Insgesamt baut die ca. 2-3 Stunden lange Geschichte die Spannung allmählich auf, um dann in der letzten Episode (vielleicht etwas zu) theatralisch zu Ende geführt zu werden.

Pluspunkt ist die dichte unheimliche Atmosphäre, die die manchmal holprige Erzählung begleitet; offener Horror tritt selten und wenn nur als drohende Soundkulisse und in Episode 3 in Erscheinung.

Aus Sicht des Gameplays sind wir sehr klassisch unterwegs, ähnlich wie die Blackwell-Reihe: der Fokus liegt auf der Geschichte, nicht den relativ einfachen Rätseln, die kaum über Sammeln und aus dem Inventar an der richtigen Stelle anwenden hinausgehen. Für mich waren es letzten Endes auch etwas zu viele "Zwischensequenzen", die mir das Heft aus der Hand nahmen.

Bereits während des Spielens kam der Verdacht auf, hier nur den Auftakt zu einer größeren Geschichte zu spielen. Dies bestätigt sich spätestens mit dem Abspann, der auf den Nachfolger Augur Peak 2016 verweist. Nun, das ist nie passiert: Gesundheitliche und finanzielle Probleme hinderten den Entwickler an der Fertigstellung. Hat dies Einfluss auf das Spielvergnügen? The Charnel House Trilogy ist in sich abgeschlossen und das vordergründige Geheimnis um Alex löst sich zufriedenstellend auf. Wenn man damit leben kann, dass Anspielungen und Ausblicke nie eingelöst werden, braucht man einen Nachfolger auch nicht. Die Qualität der Geschichte hätte es aber verdient. Immerhin ist Owl Cave im Forum ab und an aktiv, sodass die letzte Hoffnung nicht gestorben ist.

What saddens me is whenever I discover a good game with great potential, I realize it has an unfinished story. The Charnel House is a trilogy, and don't get me wrong, the whole trilogy has been released, and you can play it once you purchase it. However, you'll only play three linear chapters, which sets you up for a game that was supposed to be released in 2016. You'll play with two different characters, Alex and Dr. Lang, who you'll meet both in the first chapter, then they'll have their exclusive chapter, which will give us a glimpse into their life. The story starts with a young woman, Alex, who is prepared to leave her life behind and travel somewhere else. At the train station, she met Dr. Lang, and they were both hidden at the same destination. Little did they know that this train had hidden so many secrets.

I always enjoyed this type of game and Pixel art style, it made me feel nostalgic. The portrait of the characters is well done. The game's locations were limited, but each time you visit a place, it gives you a different feeling. The soundtracks were different and nicely fitting the melancholic vibe of the game.

The puzzles needed some thinking and how to use the items you've got, but I found myself going back and forth at times, not knowing what to do next. The voice-overs are low-quality, but they are not too bad. The game is fully voiced, which is a huge plus for them.

The game has some creepy moments and gore, also some sensitive topics. It also ends in a cliffhanger, however, it can be concluded if you don't want to know more about the characters. It is a good classic game, so if you find yourself bored and want to play something to pass the time, pick it up.

Charnel House tRiLoGy is a very SHORT game made by a small indie studio.

I don't think you can call it a "trilogy" if it is just 3 very short episodes.. Call them episodes or chapters.
Trilogy implies standalone content, usually a continuation. This is clearly episodic.

I liked that it had voice acting and the pixel art was nice. Reminded me of early Wadjet Eye games.
The atmosphere was the selling point and the whole experience was creepy enough.

The game was way too short and due to that, very easy for a point & click game.
There are very little items and only a few screens which are recycled often.
Chapter 2 and 3 play out in the same space, so the screens are reused.

If you'd skip chapter 2, you would not miss out on the story. It feels like filler.
The story loves to imply and pull various info from a past we know nothing about.
This does not feel like a game but more like a movie.

Game can be completed in 1-2 hours, but I fell asleep and left it running on my PC.
Even when playing, it was such a slog, I'd alt tab and do literally something else.
Way too indie, feels like a 1st year B- student project.
It could have been a decent enough game, if they just put more effort into it! This game is something even a non-developer can create. Disappointingly short.

Such a great point & click game. I finally got around playing this game since I bought it a decade ago (2016 I just checked my purchase history!). I'll start by saying this game has a strong narrative and not so convoluted puzzles. Not once did I feel like having to randomly combine items to progress or trying to solve some mind-boggling puzzles that required me to look up a guide. The story was creepy and full of lore and great characters. The voice acting was superb (Jim Sterling voiced this!), plus the game allows you to manually save in case you're one of those achievement hunters. There's supposedly a sequel to this game with how they ended it but it's currently stuck in a development hell for years, plus the developer himself is sick in real life. So let's pray and hope for the best...

I enjoyed this horror-themed point-and-click adventure game. It consists of three chapters that each take about an hour to complete. The puzzles are VERY straightforward, so I wouldn't recommend it for people who are looking for a challenge. But the story is creepy (especially the third chapter) and the voice acting is above average. Overall the game is quite engaging and its a nice way to spend an afternoon. It ends with a cliffhanger, and the sequel was never released, so skip this one if you want closure. Definitely worth it if you get it on sale. 6/10.

Divided into three independent but connected chapters, we are introduced to two strangers who meet up to embark on a train at night heading to Augur Peak. Alex Davenport, a girl who recently broke up with her boyfriend and has a complicated relationship with her family, and Dr. Harold Lang, who works in a museum.

In Inhale we follow Alex before she catches that fateful train, getting a glimpse of her troubles and unnerving flashes of what is to come. Sepulchre starts with Dr. Lang waking up, disoriented, and the exploration of the train becomes increasingly more disturbing until it reaches its conclusion while setting up the ambiance for Exhale perfectly. Once again we regain the control of Alex, who is forced to face some unpleasant realizations in this surreal experience. What is Gloria, the train? What is its connection to Augur Peak? How The Charnel House book connect to everything? What awaits Alex and Dr. Lang?

This game actually works as a prelude for a title called Augur Peak that has been stuck in development hell for a few years, but it seems there are plans for a 2024 release. As a standalone project, however, it is quite serviceable as a short quick game. The main focus of this game is the story, a lot seems to be quite symbolic or tied to another aspect that is just beneath the surface. The gameplay and puzzles are quite simplistic, somewhat even dull, and feel more like roadblocks than something that is supposed to keep the player engaged.

There is a lot of care put in its visuals, with impeccable atmosphere and nice sprite work, with Alex’s body language in the cold, or how the characters interact with the world around them is fluid and quite enjoyable. The soundtrack is fantastic, the piano melodies, the gripping choirs that enhances to mystery along with the changes in lighting throughout the story. The voice cast is solid and the direction is solid, which is quite a nice surprise.

While a decent title, it may be a good idea to wait for a more concrete release date for Augur Peak.

So far, so weird. The setting seems to be a nebulous "other" space -- the first third is set in NYC but for some reason the very American protagonist uses British slang ("gone eight" and "gone midnight" and "trolley"), everyone around the protagonist is British or has a very British name, the emergency lights are all blue like in the UK, and she takes a cab to an abandoned train station out in the middle of what appear to be the English moorcountry... And it just gets more incongruous from there. E.G.: A Scottish man who is apparently a native of a New England island. It's well-done and very atmospheric, but it feels like something written by a Brit who'd never been to the States.

Also, for what it's worth -- this is a pretty short game that evidently ends on a cliffhanger. It was released in 2015, it ends with the promise of further adventures in 2016, but despite his repeated assurances that the sequel is coming, the creator left game development years ago, they lost their publisher, and his last assurance was in a random Steam thread in 2020. :/ So don't hold your breath.

Ever looked into the Steam forums under various threads to find out if you could get some really great recommendations? This is how I have found [i]The Charnel House Trilogy[/i]. I was going through a lot of comments on classic point & click adventure game suggestions as next games to be played (in fact, some referred to these as must-have).

So, here we are, looking at a game that has pixelated graphics, great voice acting; something that is currently very, very (I mean very) cheap and something that - with its only 3 chapters - doesn't take very long to complete. The 3 episodes available can be played in any order and they will take around 2 hours to complete (all achievements included).

What starts out as a short chapter with Alex being at home in the evening and making sure she is prepared for a journey quickly turns into the supernatural with strange fellows on a train such as an all-too-familiar bartender, a somewhat absent-minded conductor and some weird people such as the silent but at the same time terrifying guy occupying 2-C.

Great episodes with some twists and definitely not your usual endings. Make sure to check it out if you 1) like pixelated adventure games 2) are fine with playing something out-of-the-ordinary and in case you 3) have played anything where [i]Wadjet Eye Games[/i], [i]Clifftop Games[/i], [i]Wormwood Studios[/i] or [i]Cloak and Dagger Games[/i] had been involved.

Мистический инди-триллер-квест с пиксель-артом (да, и такое мне нравится) за 37 рублей на распродаже, - вот почему в далёком 2016 году я приобрёл "The Charnel House Trilogy", которая лежала у меня в библиотеке вплоть до марта 2024 года. Доволен ли я был игрой? К сожалению, не особо.

Из всей истории приятно удивил только [spoiler]твист, раскрывающий связь Роба с Гэвином и Алекс[/spoiler], а всё остальное вызвало скуку, т.к. [spoiler]посыл в виде прощения и смирения со своими ошибками[/spoiler] - больно избитый приём. Ну и многие вопросы [spoiler](например: что за призрак в начале находится в квартире Алекс? Действительно ли Лэнг больше не проснётся, как Алекс? Почему того изуродованного существа назвали Кассилем, чьё имя ранее упоминалось как автор некой книги? Почему все удивились, когда Кассиль решил помочь Алекс, но не помог Лэнгу?)[/spoiler] остались без ответов, в том числе и концовка, т.к. [*]Озвучка персонажей тут очень слабая. Например, вот настаёт достаточно эмоциональный момент, где надо выложиться на все сто, а по итогу актриса, озвучивающая главную героиню Алекс, не проживает реплику, а сдержанно её читает. И вот думается, что хуже не будет, но потом появляется Лэнг, которого озвучили ещё хуже. И к сожалению, остальных персонажей озвучили средне.

[*]Квестовая составляющая очень средне сделана: загадки крайне лёгкие, а сложно может быть, только если затупили в тех моментах, где решение очевидно, но для решения загадки нужен триггер в виде разговора с персонажем или совершения лишнего движения. Ну и как окажется, многие предметы в инвентаре - мусор.

[*]Мистическая и таинственная атмосфера работает вроде бы и есть, но ощущается она лишь в паре моментов (особенно ближе к концовке). В большинстве случаев, будет ощущение, что вы играете в обычный квест.

Несмотря на свою малую продолжительность (3 часа), "The Charnel House Trilogy" - проходной и незаконченный квест, который вызывает смешанные эмоции. Увидим ли мы когда-либо продолжение (т.е. окончание) истории - без понятия, но честно, уже особо не надеюсь, т.к. с релиза прошло уже 8 лет.

Странно будет, конечно поставить положительный отзыв, но в то же время писать об игре скорее критически, но я это сделаю, и попытаюсь объяснить почему.

The Charnel House Trilogy, несмотря на довольно громкое заявление о трилогии, это небольшой хоррор-квест на пару часов. Негативный отзыв ей не хочется ставить за правильную сюрреалистическую атмосферу, неплохие диалоги и озвучку, сносный пиксель-арт, и удачные попытки в метафоричность.

Но что касается самой игры, то она очень камерная, тесная, прямолинейная и крайне простая. Когда я увидел в титрах должность Дизайнер загадок, невольно подумалось, каких-таких загадок? Я вот не встретил пройдя на все достижения никаких загадок. Ясно, что имелись ввиду геймплейные задачи, но игра практически ведёт тебя за ручку, и с тем же успехом это могла быть визуальная новелла, а не Point&Click квест.

В сумме мне игра скорее понравилась, но она не чувствуется обособленной, полной. Она ощущается как какой-то пролог к другой игре, более крупной и масштабной, опять же, учитывая, что сюжет тут не заканчивается как таковой. У неё есть демоверсия, но она и сама как демоверсия. Не знаю, является ли следующая игра студии продолжением этой (видимо нет), но её сложно прям порекомендовать к прохождению, в то же время сама её сносность отрицательный отзыв оставить не позволяет.

I am 32 years old.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.

Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.

With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.

After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.

Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.

Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.

Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Still a fun romp, prepare for some triggering topics/imagery.

Prepare to get confused, and just kind of accept what happens. I would say that this is more of a suspenseful story than horror, although some horrific things do happen off-screen. I still had a lot of fun experiencing the game, but it is very, very confusing and that confusion definitely added to lessen any suspenseful anxiety I may have felt.

That was quite something. I had this in my backlog for some time and was admittedly apprehensive starting it, Metacritic being quite harsh on it and all. But I am glad I finally did, as I played the whole game in one sitting (less than 3 hours, but still).

The story was crazy and a bit all over the place, in the sense that I was never really quite sure what the ♥♥♥♥ was going to happen next. I guess that was the point, really, as it mirrored the character's progression as well. The atmosphere was fantastic. Loved the train setting and the mystery aspects. Alex, the main character, was perfectly voiced. Really good job. I also liked Don, the doctor and "Floyd" (whose voice I seemed to recognize from a number of Wadjet Eye games, especially the great Technobabylon). Some side characters, especially Alex' friends, were rough, though. The audio quality was bad, as if they recorded this with subpar audio equipment. Luckily their involvement in the story was small, so ultimately it did not detract from the rest.

The revelations, at least some of them, were truly horrific and creepy. I wonder if there were some choices involved that would have affected the outcome and what became of some of the characters, so I might need to catch up a guide or a YT video. The game goes to some dark places with revelations about [spoiler]Lydia and Gavin[/spoiler], respectively and more than that.

In the end I am not philosophical or smart enough to truly understand all (or even most) of the metaphors in the game, but I will say that from beginning to end I was really hooked. Would love to see a sequel, though it is now 8 years later and I doubt there will be one. Still glad I played this.

It's a rather short point & click adventure in nice pixel graphic. While it does call itself a 'trilogy', don't let this fool you: It's not a long-winded 3-part extensive game but rather 3 short parts of one small game lasting about 2h.

Its ending also clearly is setup to have a sequel game which seems to never have been made, which is unfortunate as despite the puzzles being very easy and the short playtime I still enjoyed the game quite a bit and would have loved to get more explanation/conclusion to some of the story elements.

All in all, despite its shortcomings, I can recommend this game (especially when it's very cheap during sale) for anyone who enjoys point & click adventures and wants to have a fun night in.

You want a difficult, multi-layered puzzle game? This isn't it. You got two hours and want a decent PnC with an decent enough storyline? This is a pretty good option. The puzzles are pretty simple, and you'll beat the "trilogy" in less than 3 hours, but it has complete voice acting (one being James Stephanie Sterling) and has a movie-like pacing. Despite the polish, I don't think there's anything to really take away from this experience, and the themes are one-note and lacking any growth. Buy on sale.

러시아산 포인트 앤 클릭 호러 어드벤처 게임.

제목 끝에 트릴로지를 붙인 3부작 구성인데, 각 편당 평균 분량이 너무 짧아서 게임 총 플레이 타임은 2시간이 채 안 된다. 1부는 15분, 2부는 30분, 3부는 1시간 남짓 정도에 클리어가 가능해서 왜 이걸 굳이 3개로 나누어 트릴로지로 구성한 건지 모르겠다.

본편 내용은 유령 열차에서 벌어지는 미스터리한 이야기인데. 배경이 열차로 한정되어 있고. 이동 가능한 장소가 극히 제한되어 있으며, 상호 작용 가능한 오브젝트도 몇 개 없어서 자유도가 너무 떨어진다. 미스터리 풀이 요소도 부족하고 퍼즐 요소도 거의 없는 수준이라서 포인트 앤 클릭 어드벤처의 탈을 쓴 비주얼 노벨 같은 느낌이다.

게임 스토리도 완결은 고사하고, 사건의 진상이 제대로 밝혀지지 않은 채 끝나는데. 대놓고 후속작을 암시해서, 다음에 나올 속편이 메인이고. 본작은 프리퀄에 가까운데 그 속편의 개발 프로젝트가 공중분해된지 오래라서, 결국 하나의 온전한 게임이 되지 못하고 미완성된 게임으로 남는 작품이다.

Siento muy ambicioso llamarlo "trilogía", son 3 fragmentos de la misma historia en realidad, que en total no suma más de 2 horas de juego.

En si tiene una jugabilidad point and click básica, no hay mecánicas ni puzzles pero el contenido argumental es muy bueno. En lo personal me atrajo mucho, creí que se basaba verdaderamente en algún clásico de literatura de horror ambientado a una época más actual. Me dejó con ganas de más y lo conseguí a un muy buen descuento así que puedo recomendarlo.

The Charnel House Trilogy is an odd one, a maybe soon-to-be-forgotten game lift in a cliffhanger with Augur Peak being the apparent sequel. So far, not much news about it to this day and as much as I wanted to be optimistic about it getting released eventually to get the resolution, I doubt we are seeing it.

Despite that, this is still a good psychological horror divided into 3 chapters having by grounded approach to motivation and actions without going overboard.

There's promising graphical pixel design, a creeping vibe and strong voice drama (those we're familiar with in another similar genre of games). All of this help keep the journey intriguing when exploring around and interacting with objects.

This is a train ride you don't want to miss if you're a fan of short point-and-click games, or if you like stories based on character study and exploration.

A little gem of a game. Fully voiced and drawn using an old-school pixel art style, the Charnel house trilogy tells a mysterious and compelling horror story, or I would say, 2 intertwined horror stories, that can easily be played in one setting (about 2 hours long).
The game consists of 3 chapters that should be played in the right chronological sequence if we want to understand everything (Inhale, Sepulchre then Exhale).
With its very creepy atmosphere, the story raises many questions I hope will be answered in the sequel the dev has planned for 2024. I am quite looking forward to it!

I can only recommend this game to you if you like good horror stories.

A short little game (about 1.5 hours), I feel like that story was a little erratic and especially the ending felt rushed. Or it didn't really feel like an ending tbh, the game just stopped. I got it for one euro and I don't think I would have wanted to pay more. While the game does have things going for it (I did like some of the plot devices and the overall creepy feel), there just wasn't enough of a game there for me to recommend it, unfortunately.

I found this recommended in a thread where someone was asking about games similar to The Cat Lady, which is one of my all-time favorite games of all time. I really enjoyed this as well, it had a surreal quality to it, almost like watching a "Waiting for Godot" play out on screen... I enjoyed being a part of the story and it was brief enough (took me about 2 hours) to give me that entertainment experience in one sitting. Everything is tied up neatly in this game, but there is an open door at the end which invites a sequel. If one is ever made, I'll be first in line to buy it. Regardless, if you like surreal mysteries and fun characters that transport you back to the early 2000s (I loved Alex's choker reminded me of my 20s), give this a try!!!

It wrapped me in in the beginning, but by the end, had lost me outright. It feels like two different horror/thriller stories butting heads against one another, leaving both unsatisfying and half baked, and the final package is an incomplete story anyways. This is a glorified prologue.

Nette Mystery-Geschichte.

Hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
Die Geschichte ist recht kurz und die Rätsel kaum der Rede wert.
Es spielt sich also fast schon wie ein 2-3 Stunden Walking-Simulator.
Wer als eine lange Spielzeit mit vielen knackigen Rätseln erwartet, ist hier völlig falsch.
Die Sprache ist leider nur komplett in englisch, aber meine schlechten Sprachkenntnisse haben trotzdem ausgereicht.
Wenn man aufpasst und ggf. oft genug speichert, nimmt man auch 100% ohne Probleme in einem Rutsch mit.
Alles in allem gute Unterhaltung für einen dunklen Abend und das richtige für den kleinen Geldbeutel.

Fazit: kaufen, kaufen, kaufen. :-)

I thoroughly enjoyed Richard & Alice so I immediately gave this one a go.

It's a super linear, super basic point & click game that relies almost solely on its story and atmosphere. The latter is the game's strongest point, can't say the same for the story. While it was interesting, it didn't feel satisfying, plus it feels unfinished. Seems more of a prologue than a complete game.

As for the length, it's a pretty short game. I finished it in just over 3 hours and I take my time with every game. Also, it's more of a visual novel than a game really. Overall, clearly inferior to the very good Richard & Alice imo, so I can't recommend this for the full price. But do get it on sale if you're into story-based games.

Ein kurzes surreales Point&Click-Adventure.

[b]Geschichte[/b]

Wir spielen Alex Davenport, eine junge Frau, alleine, seit sie mit ihrem Freund Gavin Schluss gemacht hat. Sie begibt sich auf eine Zugfahrt, die sich immer mehr surreal, wie ein Traum, anfühlt.

Aber erst da, im dritten und längsten Teil hat mich die Geschichte gefesselt. Der gesamte zweite Teil über spielen wir einen Passagier, der mit Alex in den Zug gestiegen ist, was dem Spannungsbogen m.M.n. nicht gut tut.

In dieser Geschichte voller symbolträchtiger Ereignisse und Objekte ist nichts gewiss und lassen Raum für fundierte oder weniger fundierte Vermutungen was los ist. Ein Traum? Einbildung? Meine Vermutung (die ich nicht alleine habe) lasse ich mal weg.

Letztlich wird man wohl mit einer Ungewissheit übr die Geschehnisse und Zusammenhänge leben müssen. Ein bißchen zu vage, nach meinem Geschmack, aber vielleicht habe ich auch nicht alles genau genug mitbekommen. An sich aber gut gemacht, wenn man mit solcher vagen, düsteren, morbiden Stimmung klar kommt.

Also das darüber nachdenken, was eigentlich los ist, ist so der Hauptgrund für mich, das Spiel gut zu finden. Das erzeugt auch eine gewisse Spannung.

[b]Gameplay[/b]

Es ist ein klassisches Point&Click mit kleinem Inventar und was halt so dazu gehört. Ein paar Dialoge ab und an, nichts kompliziertes, eher interessantes. Alles spielt sich auf kleinem Raum ab, meistens in dem Zug, und der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist gering.

[b]Technik[/b]

Ich weiss nicht, welche Technik hier zum Einsatz kommt aber es wirkt so, als wäre es aus den früheren 1990ern. Zumindest grafisch, bei einer Auflösung von 320x200 Pixel wie bei dem C64.

OK, es gibt viele Spiele dieser Sorte, die neu herauskommen, aber ich verstehe es einfach nicht, was daran toll sein soll. So ist es für mich ein Punkt, der einfach das Spielvergnügen senkt.

Der Sound dagegen ist sehr gut. Besonders fällt positiv die Vertonung aller Dialoge auf. In Englisch, teils mit wohl britischem Akzent und Slang, aber wunderbar gesprochen, so dass ich (der Text wird ja auch mit angezeigt) alles verstanden habe.

Die Steuerung ist zum Glück recht modern, also wirklich ein Point&Click, das mit der Maus bedienbar ist. Die Dialoge sind abkürzbar, was für einen zweiten Durchgang sehr gut ist.

[b]Sonstiges[/b]

Ich habe 2h für einen Durchgang benötigt.

Die Errungenschaften sind relativ einfach, wenn man sich alles gründlich anschaut. Es kann dennoch hilfreich sein, ab und an abzuspeichern, um nicht alles nochmal durchspielen zu müssen. Für die paar wenigen verpassten Errungenschaften habe ich so nur noch wenige Minuten dranhängen müssen.

Wenn einer eine Reise tut... tja, lieber Leser, dann sind wir aber sowas von mit an Bord, oder?
Und besonders, wenn es so eine höchst interessante Fahrt wird. Da gibts wirklich einiges geboten:
Nen alten Zug, richtig schön Orient Express artig aufgemacht mit einer Dampflok, die sich schnaufend und schwerfällig vorwärts pflügt durch die einsame schneebedeckte Landschaft... einfach wunderbar atmosphärisch ist das, die Flocken tanzen im Wind, kleben an den Scheiben und hauchen ihr federleichtes Leben aus, nur um als kleiner unscheinbarer Tropfen wiedergeboren zu werden. Schön, schön...
Das hat schon was und vor allem gibts auch im Innern des Zuges einiges zu sehen... natürlich abgesehen vom edlen und wunderschön altbackenen Interieur.
Doch bevor wir aufbrechen, machen wir das, was jeder Reisende gern tut, vor allem, wenn die Zeit unbarmherzig im Nacken sitzt - einen kleinen Abstecher nämlich.

Also, los gehts: Und zwar im Apartment von Alex Davenport. Die junge Frau hat gerade ihren untreuen Freund abserviert und schlägt die Zeit tot, als eine traurige Pflicht sie nach Hause, auf die Insel Augur Peak, ruft.
Gesagt getan, bei der missgünstigen Gelegenheit kann man wenigstens noch eine alte Freundin besuchen, um den Schmerz der familiären Mühsal ein wenig zu lindern.

Und für die Reise besteigen wir eben jenen uralten, ehrwürdigen und höchst eleganten Zug.

Hier beginnt die Geschichte dann wirklich. Während wir auf den Bahnsteig noch Dr. Harold Lang kennen lernen, einen Archäologen mit gleichem Ziel wie unseres, geht die noch gar nicht wilde Fahrt auch schon los.
Und da herrscht erstmal Langeweile. In einem Anflug von Selbstlosigkeit haben wir Harold unser einziges Buch überlassen und so dreht Alex erstmal Däumchen und wir steuern von nun an den besagten Herrn Doktore...

Und jetzt hör ich auch sofort auf zu spoilern, denn so lang ist das Game nicht, ein paar wenige Stündchen hält das Vergnügen bloß an, da wäre es ja gemein, Dir alles schon vorweg zu nehmen.
Im dritten Kapitel lenken wir wieder Alex´ Geschicke, soviel sei verraten und vielleicht noch, dass die Rätselkost nicht hammerhart knobelig ist, sondern eher seicht im Hintergrund bleibt. Denn hier gehts um eine große Geschichte und die steht für sich.

Und was unsere beiden Reisenden auf ihrer beschaulichen Fahrt aufs entlegene Eiland erleben, grenzt an Wunder und Wahnsinn gleichermaßen.
Die Geschichte entspinnt sich sachte und zaghaft, baut mehr und mehr Steine aus Emotion, wirrer Psyche und Fantastik aufeinander bis hin zu einem leicht okkulten Crescendo aus krassen Twists und irren Überraschungen.
Und nein, es ist kein Jumpscare Festival und nochmal nein, es ist auch kein wirklich wahrer Horror. Jedenfalls keiner, der vordergründig ins Gesicht spring und laut: "Buh!", schreit.

Hier regieren Psychologische Kniffe und die bravourös gespielte Klaviatur der emotionalen Aufs und Abs das Geschehen und damit packt die Story uns an den verletzlichsten Punkten. Familie, Freundschaft, Verrat, Verlust, Trauer und Wehmut wechseln sich minutiös getimed ab, bis am Ende Ratlosigkeit herrscht und Leere.

Drei Enden danach, denn das Game setzt immer nochmal einen drauf, klärt sich dann doch fast alles auf, aber ein beklemmendes Gefühl der Verunsicherung bleibt.
Was war real?
Was nur ein Traum?
Was kann noch Wirklichkeit werden?
Und was bleibt frommer Wunsch und größte Furcht?

Tja und mit all diesen Fragen und noch vielen, vielen mehr lässt Dich das Spiel dann allein und so darfst Du endlich mal wieder noch ein bisschen im Dunkeln sitzen und über ein Spiel nachdenken im Nachgang. Hat man ja selten genug, sowas und deshalb ists einer besonderen Erwähnung wert.

Dass die Grafik selbst für Pixel Art altbacken wirkt, der Sound aber dezent und höchst stimmungsvoll daherkommt, trägt mehr zur Atmo bei, als das es schaden würde.
Was hier wirklich zählt ist, neben der tollen Vertonung auf englisch, der Einsatz von Bild und Symbol-Sprache und der ist, vorsichtig ausgedrückt: GENIAL!

Hab ich sehr selten erlebt, dass ich so derart oft stutzen und kurz überlegen musste und vor allem auch wollte.
Für so ein kleines Spiel steckt hier wirklich eine Menge drin, ich würds Dir zu gerne alles aufdröseln, aber dann mach ich Dir den Zauber echt kaputt.

Also was bleibt Dir also übrig?
Richtig!
Für die monströse Summe von siebzig Cent (!!!!!) mi Sale kannst Du selbst abtauchen in diese eigenartige, aber faszinierende Welt und eine wundervoll entschleunigte Reise antreten.
Eine Reise mit einem alten Zug vordergründig , die hintergründig und auf endlosen Metaebenen für so so soooo viele andere Reisen steht, vielleicht sogar für die allerletzte und sogar noch eine danach... ;-)

Und auch wenn eine Zugfahrt immer lustig ist, wird diese vielleicht ein bisschen nachdenklicher.
Gut so, in diesem Fall ist das eine willkommene Abwechslung.
Und deshalb wünsch ich Dir beim Nachsinnen, beim Grübeln, beim Knobeln, beim leicht Gruseln und bei einer emotionalen Achterbahnfahrt im Zug wie immer...

Por norma general me gustan los juegos sencillitos con narrativa poderosa (Como por ejemplo la saga To the Moon) sin embargo Charnel House Trilogy falla en ese sentido. Los tres "juegos" son en realidad historias muy cortas con un desarrollo extralineal, sin practicamente poder perderte en el camino (En el episodio 1 hay literalmente 2 pantallas).

El problema es que realmente la narrativa se resuelve en el tercer capitulo muy a medias, ya que no sabemos a donde van los personajes. Y tenemos una promesa de que la historia se resolverá en un futuro que nunca llega.

Solo recomendable para gente muy harcore del Adventure game engine.

Very short - the whole "trilogy" takes less than two hours to complete. Messy story which ends on a cliffhanger. For a game that hangs almost entirely off the narrative, it's rather dissatisfying for that not to come to a close.

Pretty, but pointless. Story, if you want to call it that, sucks, no real puzzles and it's mostly boring, sending you through the same few rooms over and over again for random crap until it decides it may end now. (Kind of a "they were dead the whole time and none of this matters" direction. Yawn!) But you can see the talent. They'll do something great one day. This isn't it, though.

why is this game rated as very positive? I played through it twice thinking i missed something. I didnt. it sucked. little to no gameplay or puzzles. boring story, boring characters, boring writing, boring dialogue. I love point and click games. my first game i ever played with perils of rosella from sierra. I love horror too, my favorite game of all time is soma. this game is not a good point and click or a good horror game. the only description I can give it is IT IS A GAME, thats it.
