As someone that still plays the first Zelda game, this game scratches that itch that makes you want more out of it.. The game is completely randomly generated based on any 6 letter word or combination you put in, from the world, to the dungeons, the secrets, and the appearance of some of the items you get so every playthrough can be different.. The exploration is interesting enough to make me keep playing just to find out what challenges you'll get out of the next dungeon.. I just finished the game and I'm already starting my second playthough.. Wonderful game! Definitely worth the price!

I'm kinda shocked by the lack of love for this game. I thought it absolutely ripped! Is it the best game of all time? No, but it's a really good game in it's own right and I'm super impressed it was made by one guy.

In terms of game play, I'm not sure why it's listed as a roguelike since it's a straight-up throwback to the original Legend of Zelda on the NES. You explore the map and gain powers and items as you clear dungeons. You start off weak. but by the end you're a higher-being hopped up on peyote. The dungeons are numbered, so it makes it pretty easy to do them in order. I liked the art and music a lot, but understand those things won't click for everyone. Combat is basic, you have a sword and slash your way through enemies, but you get other weapons and abilities as you progress. I think the game started to really click for me after the 3rd dungeon. It seems most people don't give this game a chance and quit before it even gets going.

You can get it on sale super cheap if you're hesitant to pay full price. So what are you waiting for? Unlock your third eye and give it a go!

I didn't love this game, that's for sure. The procedural generation component was a cool idea that was unfortunately poorly executed. I don't blame the developers for this; at the time, procedural generation for open world, linear ARPGs of this kind was in its infancy. Somebody had to be first mover, even if it meant the result was a confusing and frustrating mess: an attempt to fit the round peg of procedural generation into the square hole of a story-driven single player game.

Get it on sale, because in the context of video game history it will probably remain an interesting artifact. I can't much recommend playing it, but again, I can't fault the devs for having to be the first to try it.

I wish I liked Songbringer more but it's just a mid roguelike metroidvania game in a sea filled with them. Wraithbinder luckily seems to be a better game, so I'm probably going to keep an eye on it until it leaves early access.

Cool game. A sci-fi roguelike obviously inspired by Zelda. You play as a guy who crash landed on an unknown planet, and need to survive and escape. Storyline is better than I expected, with a lot of secrets and stuff to uncover. The planet is procedurally generated based on the a seed word typed at the start, so endless possibilities.
The gameplay is smooth with simple controls, easy to master. Combat is simple but fun: sword swinging and hat throwing. It feels good and that's what's important.
It's easy to play, fun, and addictive. Highly recommend.

It's a sci-fi rogue-lite Zelda (top-down metroid/roguevania) game. It's good. Everything works for me, except the music. Wtf is going on with that music? I think the compositions are good, but the sounds and tones they're using, somehow all seem like they were selected in some kind of randomizer. Incredibly bizarre. Other than that, pretty great game. Some hard challenges if you're going for 100%. Better music, and a little more consistent challenge, probably would've made it a 9 or even 10/10 for me. 8/10

Mi è bastata neanche mezz'ora di gioco per farmi un'idea del capolavoro che avevo tra le mani. Un Rpg esplorativo in pixel art 2D come ce ne sono ormai molti... Ma questo sembra avere, già dai primi minuti di gioco, una marcia in più; pur dando l'impressione di essere in un mondo decisamente grande colpisce fin da subito la spiccata semplicità sia delle armi dell'inventario che della mappa e delle specifiche meccaniche di gioco: farmare per fare diamanti e comprare equipaggiamenti migliori oltre ad avere la possibilità di dropparli direttamente dai mob uccisi. Sono solo al principio ma la storia sembra decisamente lineare (una main Quest correlata da Side-Quest che incontreremo nell'esplorazione del livello) benché il primo livello dia una discreta libertà di movimento. Ho voluto scrivere una recensione solo dopo mezz'ora di gioco proprio perché sono rimasto sorpreso da questo piccolo capolavoro. Preso ad offerta, non sto neanche a dire che vale ogni singolo centesimo speso.

At first I played it a bit and just put it down for a while. I didn't get it, I didn't have a clue what was happening.

Then I returned years later and my goodness this is pretty dang cool. I was playing just to play something I had in my library and now I'm playing to see whats next, what do I have to fight, where is the story going, what is the next block on the map going to be!?

Главный герой Рок и его робот друг Джиб родились на корабле и им нужно изучить планету, но по канону как всегда что-то случилось не так и вам нужно показать кто тут мастер подземель.
Изначально было скучновато, но постепенно становилось все интересней. Прикольная графика, музыка могла бы быть получше. Веселые диалоги.
Среди минусов только что в некоторых моментах было не понятно что делать и куда идти.
7/10 Игра слишком недооцененная и стоит вашего внимания [u] (если вам нравится подобные жанры) [/u]

Hyper Light Drifter aesthetics, Zelda 1 inspired. I finally put a bit more time into this and do feel I will end up milking at least one go around of achievements out of this. Isn't a bad game, just isn't fantastic game. Find this on sale or in a bundle it's worth grabbing.

At the start you type a word and the game uses it as a seed code to create the whole game world. There are some million worlds possible. Pretty much plays like the first Zelda slaying foes from top-down scrolling screen for screen in cardinal directions. Temples you can complete in different orders, locked passages which need to be unlocked with items from elsewhere on the map, hidden secrets and mysteries. A floating little robot companion follows you and unveils the story with you. There are a few cheesy conversations, but it's ok. Normal difficulty and interesting boss designs. And of course: awesome pixel art!

Songbringer is a roguelike game made by one develover Wizard fu/Nathanael Weiss.

You are playing as an explorer named Rog, found yourself in an unkown planet fter your spaceship crashed and you have to explore to get some answers, in this adventure you have your friend a robot named Jib and a sword. Throughout the exploration, you uncover what really happen to the planet and after facing some bosses and making new "friends" you learn about a war netween two races a lot of years before.

Simple controls, you have as weapons a sword that you can upgrade as the game progress, your hat than can be used as boomerang and bombs. Nice pixel graphics with great music that suits the game. A nice thing is that the game/world you are playing everytime you start a new is random and it creates a new seed. Took me around 6-7 hours to beat.

Κατά τη διάρκεια ανακαλύπτεις τι έχει συμβεί στο πλανήτη και αντιμετωπίζοντας αρκετά bosses καταλήγεις σε ένα πόλεμο που χε δημιουργηθεί αρκετά χρόνια πριν μεταξύ 2 φυλών.

Απλός χειρισμός, έχεις σαν όπλο ένα σπαθί που μπορεί να αναβαθμιστεί όσο περνάει το παιχνίδι, ένα καπέλο που λειτουργεί ως μπούμερανγκ και βόμβες. Ωραία πιξελωτά γραφικά με καλή συνοδεία μουσικής. Επίσης, ο κόσμος είναι τυχαίος και κάθε φορά που ξεκινά κάποιος νέο παιχνίδι βγαίνει νέο seed και πήρε 6-7 ώρες για τερματισμό.

Σε γενικές γραμμές μια ωραία επιλογή για να περάσεις χαλαρά την ώρα σου.

母船のダンジョンをクリアすればラスボスに行けるっぽかったが、
全アイテム取らないと母船ダンジョン入口のフラグが立たなかったから
どのみち全部いかないと無理っぽい
母船ダンジョンはボスに勝つと母船が墜落するから先に探索しといたほうがいい
クリア後にはなぜか母船ダンジョンが復活する
主人公がずっと半裸だった
全体ボムを使ってアフロを救出するとコンパニオンロボが退場するっぽい

Songbringer is not my type of game, and I knew it before installing it, but I wanted nevertheless to give it a try and get it out from the backlog. I confirm that it's not my type of game, but it's not too bad either. It has some sort of noisy dirty charm to it, even though I really only played a bit. I am pretty sure that if this is the kind of games you play, you will like this one. for me it's a 70/100 as in "not my game type, but i see it's finely crafted".

Songbringer is a mobile/console ported 2D top down retro pixel Legend of Zelda ripoff. Bumble about a top down retro pixel landscape from screen to screen, bashing things with your sword and trying to make out what's going on because everything is so deplorably pixelated.

Apart from the poor quality visuals, the first thing PC gamers will be offended by here is the console peasant childrens toy gamepad controller prompts.

Gameplay is extremely pedestrian top down brawling, a game format that died roughly the same time computers could do better (yet seems to linger on in indie projects from developers who couldn't quite work out how to do 3D graphics). They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. And before jumping up to defend the awful visuals, just think how successful this game would have been if a capable artist/graphics programmer was involved to produce cutting edge PC graphics.

Sadly, the poor quality gameplay and lazy pixel "art" used instead of proper graphics aren't the biggest problems here. Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is an insane $20 USD, on iOS, it's free. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay a premium for a crappy bundle worsening free mobile game so they can pretend their gaming rigs are iPhones.

$20 USD for a free mobile game, just because it's on Steam. Jesus wept. $20 would buy you pretty much any older AAA game on sale, and those games were produced with people who were able to arrange 3D graphics. It's simply impossible to recommend this to PC gamers.

No geral Songbringer lembra bastante o game clássico do legend of zelda porém quando você inicia cada save ele automaticamente gera um mundo aleatório com mapas e dungeons pré-definidas, porém com o seu próprio estilo, as dungeons mudam de lugar e são a mesma e os coletáveis nem preciso falar que são todos inspirados no zelda.
São bombas, poções de cura, isqueiro que põe fogo em volta, um chapéu bumerangue, etc.

A lot of people complained bout the pixel arts, but for me they are nicely done. My problem is that we don't really know what to do. Like I got a cube of ice in a dungeon and apparently I have to combine it with something else, but how ? Nothing tells me what to do. Also the combat is pretty basic. I feel like this could have been a great game but it lacks some polish.

ゲーム内時間7時間半でクリア、実績は37個中25個解除で正直残りをやろうとは思えない。
定価からするとボリュームは、少な目のように感じた。
アクションRPGとしてはおもしろいような気もするが、あまりにも不親切設計で万人にはおすすめできない。
実績にTA要素もあり、MAP生成がランダム？のようで繰り返し遊べるようにしているようだが繰り返し遊ぶようなゲーム性では無いように思えた。

ドット絵、ピクセルで描かれたレトロ(FC)なゼルダ風のゲーム。
アイテム、イベント、演出等、完全にゼルダリスペクト。
雰囲気や当たり判定の曖昧さにはディスクシステムのリンクの冒険が思い出される。
MAPからファストトラベルできて、探索は比較的快適。(後述のMAP自体が見にくいという点はある)

良い点
・steamでゼルダ風のゲームが遊べる。
・ボス戦の難易度は少し難しめぐらいで、なかなか楽しかった。
・日本語訳のレベルが高い、ほぼ違和感がない。

悪い点
・ドット絵、レトロと言えばよく聞こえるが、FCレベルで細部はかなりわかりにくい。
　MAPの暗さも相まって、全体通して見にくいことで攻略が難しい。
・アイテム(スキル)に対する説明が少なすぎて何がどういう効果か分かりずらい。
　隠し要素を見つける、ストーリー進行、攻略に重要なとあるアイテムがあるので気づかないとクリア不可。
　まぁ大多数の人が中盤までにはたぶん気づく(はず)。
・イベントを自由な順番で回れるので前後したせいもあるかもしれないが、ところどころストーリーがよく分からなかった。

このゲームをプレイしたことのある人に色々聞きながら、教えてもらいながらやれば理解できて楽しめそうな気もする。
個人的には訳も分からず進めて、なんとかクリアできた、さぁ次のゲームをやろうかな？という感想しか残らなかった。

Pretty sure I got this game in a Fanatical bundle or something a long time ago. Gave it a try since I thought it might be a cute hidden gem. No. It's not. It has some of the worst low-res pixel art I've ever seen in an indie game and cringe-inducing dialogue that sounds like it was written by a 13-year old boy.

Il existe toute sortes de jeu en pixels mais là c’est du pixel moche. Les effets musicaux sont bien trouvés, mais là encore, le 8bit est mal exploité et loin d’être sympa.

J’aurais bien continué, mais les graphismes et le son me donnent une migraine monstre.
Dommage, il avait l’air vraiment sympa.

Ich habe vor kurzem erst das Spiel "Hyper Light Drifter" gespielt, was ziemlich beliebt ist und Songbringen scheint HLD inspiriert zu haben. Mir gefällt der Humor ziemlich gut in diesem Spiel und auch die geheimsnisvolle nur zum Teil erklärte Story. Die Kämpfe sind simple aber spannend. Alles in allem eine sehr gute Atmospäre.

I went in knowing very little, but really wanting to like it. There are good ideas here, but all the good is dwarfed by the bad execution. Combat feels incredibly clunky, to the point that it was just straight up unfun to play. It is not clear how far your range is, or enemies range, what effects are affecting you, why, how long, where the hell they came from, what hit you, etc.

It's just messy and unfun is the best way to put it.

This game was clearly inspired by all of the things in Zelda 1 that have made it not age well. Combat is unrewarding, over world movement is a chore, and trying to figure out if you're in the right dungeon or doing the right thing requires 20 minutes of mindless wandering. If this hadn't been gifted to me, I would have refunded this after the first 50 minutes.

The controls are terrible, music and sound effects are super annoying. I know they were going for a nostalgic feel, but there is such a thing as too much.
In general, this game is super lame. The trailer and screenshots are totally misleading. It's such a rip-off of Hyper Light Drifter without any of the charm. The enemies at the beginning are just orbs and squiggly things, and a big gopher-looking thing.

This Zelda-like was entertaining from the start. I didn't pay much attention to the store but enjoyed exploring the map, unlocking new items, and fighting the variety of enemies. The music often matched the mood but was a little repetitive. Controls felt tight but I never got a great feeling for when certain bosses were going to do damage. This is an impressive one-person creation and I'd certainly recommend checking it out.

It wears its Zelda inspirations on its sleeve. From heart containers, to world tile exploration, to a menagerie of hodgepodge upgrades and neat items/tools to use, both passive and active, some silly and some incredibly useful. There's also element cubes which you can use to combine with a select few other items in order to give them a unique effect. However, there isn't very much to the combat, particularly not at first, which gives it a Conan-y kind of hack'n'chop feel where you're just button mashing through enemies (though you do have a charge attack for the occasional beefy foe) and taking damage is sometimes simply an unavoidable part of the process. This play style is compounded by the fact there's no lack of ways to recover hit points.

A huge part of the game is its procedural generation. When you make a new playthrough, you type a six-letter word in and it decides your game's layout, dungeon progression order (but you still have a lot of freedom to choose which ones you want to do first), and placement of collectible items/tools. It even has a slight change on the game's sound track by changing keys. It's a game made to either be played more than once, or to share different play experiences with other players.

However, that huge part of the game may also be its hugest issue. I think what holds it back is that despite its unwieldy Zelda inspiration, the variety of "puzzles" is extremely lukewarm. It doesn't require any particular thought beyond whether you need to push something aside (like one or two pillars), meditate (to reveal something hidden), or blow something up. It feels like all the tools for some novel puzzles are present, but there just aren't any. And as a result, rooms with no combat feel more like brief road bumps between rooms where there [i]is[/i] combat. The gameplay loop isn't very strong because of that. It's a trade-off for the seed generation utility I imagine, as the game needs to accomodate the fact that players will get certain items at wildly different times depending on their playthrough. Not to mention how certain tools may be combined with different elemental effects.

The setting is very psychedelic, with heavy themes of "vision quests" and sixth senses. Your character is a space-faring party animal looking for new places to mosh with his galactic hippie friends, and it's just jovial and ludicrous enough to admire. The writing and narrative falls into the trap of using fictional dates and mishmash syllable names that mean nothing to the player to give the setting a sense of "depth," but you can either interpret that as intentionally vague, or adding yet another layer of alien quality to the narration and characters.

On an additional note, the game's creator is reasonably active on the Steam forums, and is always willing to help people out with parts they might be stuck at, provided you give him your playthrough's seed name.

I've played Songbringer for an hour and I've decided to call it quits. I can see the appeal of the game, but I can also see that it's not for me. It certainly shows that it's inspired by Zelda, I'm just not convinced that's enough to play it.

The art is good, as is the sound. The writing that I've experienced is not my taste, the attempt at humor is too much "robot looks down on dumb person" for me, it feels forced. The procedural levels can be good. I've somehow completed the second dungeon and come to think of it, I entirely walked past the first one. Or at least I'm guessing it's the first one that I ran past, could as well be the third or sixth, you never know with procedural levels. The gameplay is ok, though best with a controller. Fighting mostly consists of timing your swing, but with many enemies around it turns to button mashing, which is a shame.

All in all it's not a bad game. It's just not a game for me. I can try to finish the game, but as I wasn't really enjoying what I was playing now, I just don't want to continue.

I got this game in a bundle on Fanatical and I can honestly say it's certainly worth it to try the game that way. But at full price I wouldn't recommend it.

Сразу про название: "Songbringer" - название корабля с которого главный герой транспортируется на планету.
Дальше он терпит крушение. Находит вибро-меч в ближайшей пещере. Исследует планету.

В основном перемещаешься пешком по планете, рубишь монстров, лазишь в пещеры с боссами.
Прокачка: в виде предметов, которые увеличивают способности героя.

Приятная пиксельная графика. Музыка - ну так средне - ни восторга, ни отвращения не вызывает.

В целом мозг не парит, весело и реиграбельно.

It strikes me as really, really odd that Songbringer is quite THIS unrenowned a thing. 110 user reviews for a two-year-old game, even though it recieved stellar critical coverage upon release... Very odd indeed.

Combine the very first Zelda with Superbrothers' Sword and Sworcery, add in some ACTUALLY good gameplay, pepper it with a bit of kitch aesthetic, procedural world generation, fantastic lighting and a number of little touches like using your top hat for a boomerang. And then throw in a few Castaneda-approved cacti for good measure. Cook on a slow fire until ready.

Songbringer is no unbelievable groundbreaking ultra-masterpiece, but it definitely deserves more attention than it gets, especially with all the Zelda-excitement that's been going around since Breath of the Wild came out. Go ahead and give it a few hours of your time - you most certainly won't regret it.

Songbringer looks really nice on the storepage and when you first boot it up. Sadly it does not feel good to play.
Movement and Combat feel floaty and unresponsive. The first boss i fought had a hitbox that was way bigger than the model, no windup animations for his attack and followed me through the small arena to do contact damage. I then killed him by blindly mashing the attack button. The first range enemies fired 3 pixel wide projectiles that were almost indiscernible from the background. I defeated them by walking up to them and mashing the attack button. I constantly got stuck on scenery like small puddles and one room in the first dungeon did instant damage to me every time I entered it. The visuals quickly go from awesome to messy and standing in the way of the action. There was no gripping story in the first cutscenes or interactions with the small drone that follows you. Overall a game about combat that just does not feel crisp enough.

Dann zeigt das zufällige Dungeon Design seine Zähne.
Extreme Schwierigkeits Schwankungen (Spiel ist voll einfach, bis auf diesen einen Raum mit den Nestern und dicken Zauberern)
Wer nichts gegen sowas hat, und das eher als Herausforderung sieht, wird gut unterhalten.

えっゼルダの伝説を知らない？
うーん、それは･･･困った。

ちなみに、アクションの謎解きの難易度はほどほど。
ボスにもなにがしかの弱点やパターンがあり、気付いてしまえば攻略は容易い。
ただし、武器やアイテムの解説に関してはほとんど情報がなく、どれも使ってみるまで実際の効果が分かりにくい。

次にどこを探索すべきかを示すヒントアイテムみたいなものもあるのだが、イマイチ役に立たなかった。
まあ、さほど広いマップでもないため、丹念に探索していけば詰まることはないだろう。
プレイ時間の割には濃密で楽しめる作品。

Songbringer supposedly is inspired by Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past which I can't say anything about as I've never owned a console myself. It's an action adventure with 2D pixel graphics and an odd but atmospheric soundtrack.

The setting is a crude mix of science fiction tropes and dungeon crawling. Eight dungeons can be discovered and mastered to gain strong items or improve existing items and weapons. Finding hidden items and passages on the randomly generated map is another way to power up. Killing opponents generates diamonds to purchase items in shops or recharges consumable weapons like bombs or magical cactusses. Each run is procedurally generated based on a six-letter seed that determines locations and items. While this leaves room for exploration, the items, dungeons and tasks in sum are the same, just located elsewhere.

Each dungeon has an end boss which is more or less difficult but nothing too annoying. The dungeon bosses get easier towards the end when the player is powered up with strong weapons and skills. This changes again in the final battle which seems to be impossible. In fact, there's a simple trick which I googled and which rescued the game for me. Overall, the game isn't too difficult. It was quite satisfying to speed over the map and slay masses of opponents in the final dungeons without much ado.

I really liked the game notwithstanding the fact that again it took me 50% longer than what the average of gamers need on their first run to complete it. It's a pity that this game completely went under the radar.

Thankfully the RPG tag is misplaced. This is an action adventure like the Zelda games that inspired it. It also goes one step further than the item randomizers some of us enjoy watching/playing on Twitch to add varying maps with each seeded run. With secrets, upgrades, and key items to gather across beautiful pixelated landscapes, Songbringer gave me the experience I desired.

At least it did for one run. Like Sweezy Gunner, Songbringer grants access to all of its content each campaign and only promises a shuffle of items and mazes. A player can choose to apply elemental upgrades to different items, but the selection of tools will always remain the same. I don't feel the need to play again any time soon. Players may wish to take advantage of the game's permadeath mode to get more use out of the procedural generation.

The combat is all button mashing, but I had fun with it. The only real problem I had was trying to move with my controller. Fortunately, Steam's configuration tool came to the rescue by allowing me to mimic my keyboard. While this made the in-game UI display keyboard keys instead of the buttons I was using, I got used to it.

Overall, it's easy to recommend Songbringer to action adventure fans and I hope to see Twitch speedrun competitions take advantage of this title someday.

gioco veloce e divertente con tante idee carine e una buoon gameplay.
Schiantati su un pianeta sconosciuto lo esploreremo per tornare uslla notra nave e poi per sconfiggere il male che vi si annida. Il pianeta oltre alla superficie di per se piena di passaggi nascosti e piccole grotte in cui troveremo equipaggiamenti e poteri nuovi, presenta anche una decina di dungeon più grandi, tutti con la loro caratterizzazione e una boss alla fine. Questa è la parte meglio riuscita del gioco, con combattimenti divertenti e qualche enigma facile ma che da una buona varietà al gioco.
La trama è fin troppo succinta, ma funzionale all'esperienza di gioco.
La difficolta è leggermente crescente con il proseguo dell'avventura, ma se farete i dungeon in ordine non avrete problemi; anzi sul finale tutto diventa più semplice fino il boss finale che invece risulta molto impegnativo. Io dopo averlo fallito 3 volte mi sono andato a vedere il finale su youtube, non sono certo uno che perda tempo a rifare le stesse cose più volte.
Non ho provato il DLC grautito, ma dovrebbe essere un altro dungeon, magari una volta che ho voglia lo faccio, per ora sono soddisfatto di questo gioco e passerò ad altro.

I liked this game, although some game elements are a mixed bag. It reminded me of the NES Zelda game, after a few hours of getting a feel for the game. Lot of action-rpg elements, with pixel art graphics. Combat gameplay is fairly simple, with lots of Conan-style sword swinging. Emphasis is instead on exploration and experimentation. Got to experiment and try things out to progress. The game had a mix of weird-electronica sounds that fit with the theme.

While comparable to the Zelda game, this is not going to be a classic. The original Zelda inspires lasting gaming memories, and Songbringer is going to be easily forgotten. Zelda used pixel graphics to the best of that system's abilities, while Songbringer uses pixel graphics to obscure detail - to poor effect sometimes. And while Zelda used secret locations as surprising additions to the vast existing game world, Songbringer forces players to figure out the secret elements early, which often gives a feeling of dead-ends.

So in the end, I played this game on an old computer running ubuntu linux 18.10, with radeon mesa drivers, and an xbox type gamepad controller. A gamepad is strongly recommended. One technical issue was that the mouse cursor remained on the screen, in fullscreen mode. The game was developed with FMOD Studio, and it had an installation size of 1300 MB.

I thought I would like this game, but it is just terrible. The graphics are fine, but the "music" is annoying after two minutes. The combat is mushy as other reviewers have said and is simply "mash button A until enemy dies." Other reviewers speak of a story or lore. I cannot find it. I walk around, get one quest (the same quest every time; so much for procedural), kill enemies, kill bosses I don't know are bosses, and get stuck when the only path is over a gap and I cannot blink over it. Hours and hours of this. I am not sure why I tortured myself. I guess I hoped there would be something more. But I am done.

TL;DR - Songbring exceeded all my expectations. Normally Zelda-esque games disappoint me and make me sad. Songbringer won my undivided attention even though I was working on a paper for my Master's. Revelling has never been more fun, and with multiple ways to solve various problems, procedural world generation, and alternate endings, Songbringer is a no brainer. Buy it. 8.2/10

Graphics: Songbringer is retro... but retro in the style of retro on crack. The visuals at first seem kind of interesting but nothing special. Then as you progress in the game, you start to see all the added effects. Particle effects are done extremely well. Night to day effects, death effects, use of special items... all effect the game in a great way and help set the mood.

Music: Songbringer's music is fairly simple, but fits in with the overall feeling of the game. I usually felt like whatever sound effects I was listening to or soundtrack in the background, fit right in with whatever I was doing in game. However, others listening to the music with no context didn't enjoy it as much.

Controls: At first I thought the controls (Xbone) were a little sluggish, but then I realized it's actually sort of a game play upgrade issue (how fast you could swing the sword.) One other issue seemed to be I wasn't sure which action was prioritized when I was hitting multiple buttons at the same time.

Gameplay: It'll remind you of the original Zelda mixed with Link to the Past in the beginning. One of the major differences is procedural generation. I love going back and playing OG Zelda, but everything is always in the same place... with Songbringer, you can actually explore a different world each time. The game will quickly depart from feeling like Zelda as it is a fully developed game in its own right. The backstory was interesting though I would have liked to know more about the other characters. The ability to combine items is interesting though limited and I wish that could have been more developed, BUT works very well as it is. I would have liked a little more detail on the map, even after the ferrets ate their way through everything.

Overall: I really enjoyed Songbringer a lot more than I expected. When I typically play Zelda-esque games, they tend to disappoint, as they try to follow the same Zelda-like formula, but typically with less quality results. What I almost never feel when playing these games, is one that starts from the Zelda style, but leaves me feeling like it matured and grew up and branched out on its own. Songbringer reminds me of everything good about retro-gaming, without being too difficult (though permadeath exists) or too demanding. If you've got the cash, throw down for full price, the dev deserves it. If a sale comes up at 30-50% off... worth it of course. Personally I'm wondering what Wizard_FU comes up with next.

I really want to like this game. It has components I usually enjoy. But the movement imprecision killed it all for me. I don't understand how something as simple as moving in a direction (and only that direction) pointed to by the joystick can be done so badly. Combat sucks because of that. And when you take away the exploration and combat fun from this type of game, there's just not enough left to enjoy.
I'm hoping a movement update would happen in the future so I can come back and enjoy the game to its full extend.

Почему стоит играть:
+ Мир интересно изучать. Он представляет из себя заброшенную планету...точнее небольшую область. И нам придётся изучать её, чтобы набраться сил для спасения вселенной. А для этого необходимо исследовать практический каждый игровой экран вдоль и поперёк в поисках секретных пещер и входов в подземелья.
+ Довольно дружественная rouge like игра. После смерти у нас не забирают всё нажитое добро, а всего лишь переносят на последнюю точку сохранения. Они тут не частые, но ввиду компактности мира, добраться до места гибели бывает довольно просто и не отнимает много времени. А в подземельях находятся телепорты, так что в случае смерти проходить всё заново не придётся.

Почему не стоит играть:
- Бредовый текст. Может это и проблема перевода, но в записках, через которые раскрывается лор, указана какая-то несвязанная ерунда. Воспринимать текста, который как бы состоит из случайных фраз, очень тяжело.
- Плохой геймдизайн, что выражается в нескольких аспектах.
1. В игре присутствует множество неочевидных механик, о которых если и упоминается, то вскользь (ключевое слово "если", поскольку намного чаще о многом вообще умалчивается). Например, как объединять предметы. Или что для входа в одно из подземелий нужно использовать стаканчик. Или как открыть дорогу к боссам. Или...да много чего ещё. Список можно продолжать бесконечно и он сжирает очень много игрового времени.
2. Много мест, где чувствуется отсутствие изобретательности. Например, в последнем подземелье нам придётся повторно уничтожить боссов из ранее пройденных. Только на это раз в количестве двух штук одновременно. Или для открытия дверей, нужно зачистить комнату, в которой присутствует несколько десятков (а может и вся сотня) врагов.
3. За кучей противников и спецэффектами, герой частенько теряется, что отрицательно сказывается на его здоровье.

Went in knowing literally nothing about this game aside from the genre tags and some screenshots. 35 minutes in, there's a lot going on, the world is generated by a random seed, and there's a story with events (which is unusual for a random-gen game).

This game is a gem. It's got a lot going for it, and pays attention to the little details. It reminds me of Hyper Light Drifter, if it took place on an alien planet and the protagonist was an oaf. I notice some Zelda influence, too.

Would I recommend this over Hyper Light Drifter? Well...no. HLD is a tough act to follow, and this game isn't quite there. But this is a good game nonetheless. Dev seems active, too, so that's a plus.

At first sight I was a little skeptical of how enjoyable Songbringer would have been. Theres a good balance of the world map and the dungeon maps that you explore. The soundtrack is pretty cool. The game is pretty damn funny too. I'm hoping there will be additional DLC after The Trial of Ren to push the game further. Maaan the ending caught me by suprise. One of the best cliffhangers in a story or game that I've seen. Man I hope we get more content!

This game is such a massive disappointment. Pixellated graphics, procedural adventure, that should be something I love. Except that every single part is disappointing.

The moment to moment gameplay is lackluster. It is hard to read what is happening when there are pixellated graphics, many different lightning effects, and projectiles or enemies are a few pixels wide. Moreover, the game can be resumed to "mash the sword attack and sometimes spam bombs". Many different upgrades will be direct upgrades to the sword, making it the go to things constantly, and making most of the rest redundant.

Moreover, this is compounded by unclear hit zones for both you and enemies, which makes it hard to figure out where you should stand and where you should hit. You end up just swinging your sword around hoping it will achieve the desired effect, which it often does, because most enemies can't do anything beside "rush at you and hit you with their bodies" or "throw a projectile". They may have different shapes, but the behavior is mostly the same...including for bosses. That makes for a boring game, that gets easier as you get more and more upgrades to your one attack.

Similarly the story is purely functional. "You get stranded in a planet, you need to save it from mortal danger". That's basically it. There is a few lore tidbits here and there, but there are mostly irrelevant, and the dialogs are a constant annoyance. They try to be funny, and mostly end up aggravating with several bits of dialogs repeated ad nauseum every time you perform certain actions.

Finally, for a game named Songbringer, I would expect either some sort of connection to music in the story, or at least a decent soundtrack. There is none of that here. Songbringer is just the name of the ship you're flying in at the start of the game. Its name is irrelevant. As for the music, I love chiptune and new synthwave, so at first, I thought the soundtrack would suit my tastes...but it turns out to be mostly blips and blops, rather than actual songs, and it just reminds me of late 80s/early 90s games where very few soundtracks were done by composers, and were just a few sounds created by devs.
That's basically what you get with Songbringers...bipping noises that fail to actually be a proper track, and worse, don't even fit in the atmosphere of the game. You're alone in the wilderness, adventuring into dungeons and you're just getting "bip bop bip bop"-like sounds constantly that remind of "home computer in the 80s", rather than "scary soundtrack for a scary dungeon". It's out of touch with the rest of the game, and is just a constant annoyance.

The visual artists deserve the highest praise, the color use and lighting effects in this game are beautiful. The coding is much less so. The sprites feel like greasy rubber trying to walk on ice. Walking up to a wall or a small obstacle can just slide you to any direction. This includes the enemy sprites, so combat feel like a pinball match. Regardless of who gets to hit who, either or both character will fly back some random direction and random distance, colliding and sliding with other enemies and objects. So most times in fights you can just completely lose sight of your character, let alone to see what the enemies are even doing. The nice effects turn into visual pollution, the mobs are spamming so you just spam back, mash attack and spam the i-frames items you can grind up. The difficulty curve just doubles the amount of enemies, their patterns are meaningless, you can just facetank and heal. Really disappointing and sometimes frustrating.

The story and setting is engaging, weird sci-fi, 70-80's french comics, but tries a bit hard to come off as mysterious, the poetical lore-bits fall kind of flat. The music is mostly good, but however I love strange electronic beats, these get jarring after a while, doesn't work well as background music, and blends poorly with the other sound effects, constant bleeping and buzzing. The game mechanics are straight-up zelda, dungeons, bosses, hundreds of hidden stuff, invisible doorways, ability gates, backtracking galore. Mostly I felt that the poor and boring combat got in the way of exploration and I felt that most of the puzzles, items and mysteries are uninspired lore-dumps. Getting all items without a guide is a bit of chore, but fighting the later bosses without upgrades even more so. What kept me going was the visuals, definitely worth that bit of frustration, looks so much better in motion than on the screencaps.

When I'm already pretty fed up with all pixelart graphics in games this one still spark my interest.

Game is good, interesting and have that mystery vibe especially when game barely explain anything to player :)

That's why I did more than half of the map and then discover that I can teleport to ship, then I discover how to craft items what I didn't discover is that I should talk to captain of the ship and for some reason I couldn't do that, maybe it was to late, maybe I did something I shouldn't and script didn't start properly and I was unable to push further main story or whatever :) I ended up "finishing" game by watching videos on youtube, it was good enough for me, I have to many games waiting in a line to play to replay any other and risking that the same script will not fire up again as should.

But even so I still think this is good game and considering that this was made by one man makes it even more impressive :)
