I think "Star Control: Origins" is worth trying. I didn't stick with it very long, though.

I do think the game was "made with love." There's a lot of humor in it, and the art direction has nice whimsy.

For me, though, the core loop didn't really work out. I think "SC:O" is meant to be a joy-of-exploration thing, but I didn't get that much enjoyment from flying place to place and landing on planets. The getting from star system to star system quickly becomes tedious, because there didn't seem to be much to find in hyperspace. (Depending on where you're going, there's a LOT of hyperspace.) Then, when you get to a system, visiting the various points of interest ends up seeming like just a bunch of "checking the boxes." There are special things to find, but many of them end up showing the marker which means "an interesting thing is here, but you can't resolve it yet." The markers accumulate to the point where they aren't a meaningful indicator of where you've been, and you don't get quest log entries about them in most cases. It's difficult to self-direct your travels when there isn't an easy way to determine where you think you'll find something new.

The planetary exploration is a nifty idea that didn't really pan out for my tastes. You get this rover that you can drive around and collect things with, and you can equip it with a weapon for combat. It's all fine in theory, but the repetition and frustration get in the way. The real point isn't the scenery, but rather to hunt down these resources dotted all over a planet. The trouble is that all the planet - and the lander controls - end up doing is impeding the process. This isn't like the original "Mass Effect" Mako, where terrain could be fun and comical. What it works out to is a lot of teeth grinding as your bouncy lander won't go where you want, and constantly requires you to jump to avoid terrain features that it hangs up on.

And if you get into a planet-side fight, your lander is VERY fragile, which means trying to stay at long range. And THAT means fighting with how your projectiles fly over the surface in a curve. It's actually clever! But again, I just felt like the fiddling around with the laser was an obstruction and not a fun diversion.

Similarly to all that, the space combat system didn't really work out for me. There are other games of this general type that seamlessly integrate the space-flights and the space-fights. To make the fleet system work, though, "SC:O" encounters get resolved in their own sort of mini game. There's nothing wrong with that as a basic choice, but the way it works out is to break the flow of your exploration to dump you into an arena where clunky, Newtonian flight, and imprecise weapons combine to create yet another feeling of "I really wish this would just get out of the way."

I'm one of those folks where the interlocking systems of this title simply failed to interlock in a way that was engaging for me. Other players love this thing from top to bottom. You may as well find out which camp you're in.

A nice short game. To be clear, its a RPG and not a 4X or RTS game. It has a short storyline but it progresses at a nice pace. The different accents of the different races was a nice feature. Loved that the Mysterious ancient starbases were Australian! I felt there were a few missed opportunities. Apart from the first officer, none of the other crew members really played a part. Also there were so many different resources you could find, but outside of buying the logs and a few small missions, they werent used for anything and there wasnt anything to distinguish between them.

I don't have anything inherently negative to say about this, I'm generally speaking a sucker for adventure games, I specifically tend to lean more sci-fi. Huge fan of Mass Effect, if this was more serious and had a darker theme I'd be heavily invested. Though as it stands it may take me a hot minute before I get around to revisiting it, for whatever it's worth though? I did enjoy it, the experience was moderately positive, I'd probably give this game a solid 6/10 as an honest point of view.

The plot certainly had my attention, the exploration was fun, I love the upgrade system, dogfights were a bit annoying, the aliens were somewhat off putting and the lack of a direction is a bit of a hit and miss, I know some people like the concept of being thrown into a huge world and figuring it out on their own, but I prefer some direction.

(Maybe I'm misremembering things, if so I apologize).

J'ai beaucoup joué à stracontrol 2 à l'époque et j'ai beaucoup hésité à tester Origins, mais le jeu est un chouette remake de starcontrol 2 et il lui fait un bel hommage. Oui ramasser les ressources sur les planetes est parfois un peu répétitif mais on a pas mal de ressources pour peu de minage donc ca passe. Et maintenant on retrouve des vaisseaux au sol! Jako remake oryginalnego Star Control to 10/10 chyba, został zachowany feeling i główne elementy.

Jako twór samodzielny z kolei jest średnio. Nie źle, ale średnio. Główne minusy dla mnie to:

- Eksploracja jest bezsensowna.
- Lądowanie na planetach jest nudne, specjalne eventy które można na nich znaleźć niewiele wnosi
- Muzyka do niczego, a raczej przeszkadza i irytuje. To jedna z niewielu gier w których ją wyłączyłem.
- Tak samo inne dźwięki - czasem pojawiały się dziwne, ambientowe basy które były bardzo nieprzyjemne. Do tego niektóre dźwięki są zbyt głośne i niezgrane z resztą (np. dialogi oficera podczas badania planet, walka). Można też wymienić głos stacji kosmicznych Prekursorów, które niby miały dropować lore ale są tak denerwujące (głos siedzącego w puszce robota z lat '70), że jak najszybciej je pomijałem.
- Balans ekonomii nie istnieje, po dwóch godzinach nie miałem czego robić z pieniędzmi.
- Walka była dla mnie nieciekawa, te areny to design z lat '90. Ale to taki plus-minus, innym taka forma może się spodobać.

Mimo wszystko bawiłęm się dość dobrze, na pewno warto kupić na przecenie. Główna linia fabularna jest fajna i dość ciekawa, interakcje z rasami obcych tak jak w oryginale są bardzo zabawne i interesujące, a sami obcy też nie są sztampowi. Proponuję tylko sobie uzmysłowić, że to nie jest gra w 'badanie kosmosu', więc nie eksplorujemy, lądujemy tylko na planetach ze znacznikiem anomalii, surowce zdobywamy tylko jeżeli bardzo potrzebujemy pieniędzy albo wymaga tego od nas jakiś task.

Grę kupiłem za 19 zł, przeszedłem w 16 godzin. Pewnie dałoby się ściąć ten czas o połowę. Za pełną cenę na pewno nie, ale na przecenie nawet przy wszystkich wadach warto kupić i zobaczyć w odświeżonej grafice jak kiedyś się robiło gry.

I love this game and the original Star Control 2 it is trying to improve upon. Some of the same spirit exists, but despite being graphically superior and having a more organized and streamlined plot, it has lost much of the spirit from the original, which is clearly still better, despite being over 20 years older. Some of the achievements are also bugged and from the comments, have clearly been that way for around 3 years and Stardock seems to not care to fix them, even though they are aware of them. Multiple years of poor/slow/failing support for achievements they know are broken but are too "busy" to fix doesn't look good. Care about your product all the way please. Honor Paul's hard work and vision, don't make players go through a weird process to get an earlier version of the game when the achievements still worked instead of fixing it.

I am old enough to have played the original Star Control and Star Control II, which I loved. Star Control: Origins did not disappoint. It is a brilliant update on the original while keeping everything that makes me so nostalgic for it. Having the entire game voice acted is brilliant. The writing is great, very funny at times. The aliens each have their own unique character and personalities. The story is excellent with a cool swerve that I won't spoil. I would definitely recommend anyone try out the game.

I do have two criticisms of the game however, but maybe these are just because I have only played the campaign and not the other modes. First, there is little in the campaign to motivate you to use any of the alien ships rather than your own flagship. After a few modifications, your flagship is better than anything else available to you. Plus, these ships don't seem to have quite the unique abilities and tactics that made SC and SC II melee so addictive. And second, the resource gathering portion of the game can become boring and repetitive. However, its pretty much the same resource gathering system as the original games, so its not a criticism unique to this installment.

I very much to see additional campaigns for this game or a sequel soon. A very worthy successor to the Star Control legacy.

「待望の続編」という触れ込みに胸を躍らせたが、蓋を開けてみれば、そこには愛すべき「ア・クアン」も、臆病な「スパティ」も、不気味な「オーズ」もいない。権利関係の大人の事情により、世界観やキャラクターが一新された本作は、システムだけを精巧に模倣した「同人ゲーム」のような手触りだ。
もちろん、ランダーでの資源回収や、外交による駆け引き、そして慣性を利用した艦船バトルなど、ガワの部分は伝統をしっかり踏襲している。

だが、そこにはかつて感じた未知への畏怖や、ユニークなエイリアンたちとの会話が生む化学反応はない。あくまで「スターコントロールごっこ」を楽しみたいなら止めはしないが、あの頃の胸躍る冒険心を現代で満たしたいのなら、別の宇宙（『No Man's Sky』など）へ旅立つことを強くお勧めする。
あっちの方がよっぽどスタコンしてるし。

・慣性が働く独特の操作感で行う艦船バトルは健在で、コツを掴めば胸が躍るドッグファイトが可能。

【BAD】
・「あの」スターコントロールではない。旧作の魅力的なエイリアンたちは不在で、あくまでシステムを借りたリブート、あるいは質の高い同人作品の域を出ない。
・メインストーリーの脚本が凡庸の極みであり、先が気になる展開もないため、物語を追うよりも無目的に宇宙を彷徨う方がマシという本末転倒な作り。

I love this game. It's so funny.
I want it to continue development and implement the full Galaxy and add some diplomatic options. I want to keep playing and to be able to coerce the [spoiler]Scryves into renouncing oppression[/spoiler]. I want to visit the center. I want to meet more species. I want to ally myself with the [spoiler]Phamysht[/spoiler]. I want to grow the [spoiler]Federation[/spoiler] and exterminate the [spoiler]fish[/spoiler]. I want more [spoiler]Menkmack tomfoolery[/spoiler]. I want to see the [spoiler]Mowlings[/spoiler] develop. I want more use for the resources. I want more upgrades. I want more ships. It isn't a terrible game but it doesn't excel at anything. The story and graphics are ok but nothing to get excited about. The writing feels a bit samey after awhile; also it tries really hard to be funny but the jokes just fall flat instead. The ship combat is terrible, and the AI that can be used instead of the player is also terrible. There were a few fights that took so long the game just gave me the win for free. The lander combat is very simple and boring. The rest of the gameplay is just talking and collecting resources.

The worldbuilding is pretty good in a few places, and the soundtrack is good. Those are pretty much the only things the game has going for it. I got it on sale and honestly I still kinda wish I hadn't bothered. There are other games that do all of the same things but better. Don't bother with this one.

Looked like it could be fun but ffs newtonian physics! The ship is all over the place and you bare line up a shot. Its like playing some weird version of pinball. I only won the first fight because the enemy bounced off a planet and went off the map. I do not understand why anyone thinks that control method is fun. I absolutely hate it.

Open speelwijze. Eigenlijk ook aansluitend bij Starcontrol 1,2 en 3 en toch verschillend zoals alle starcontrols zijn. De controle met muis en toetsenbord zijn geweldig, grafisch goed en het verhaal is ook goed. De DLC met opvolgende taken en dingen had ik wel iets meer van verwacht.

I really, really wanted to like this game. I bought it because one of my favorite writers (Chris Bucholz) was the chief writer on this game. Unfortunately, it's just not really any fun. A lot of mismatched gameplay features, many of which just aren't any fun, pile onto the wonderful script.

EDIT: I gave this another go, after playing the original Star Control games (the second one is available free on Steam under the Ur-Quan Masters). It took a while to "click" - once I realized it's a fairly faithful remake of the original, and it should be played through the lens of a 20+ year old classic, it made a lot more sense. You don't need to strip mine the galaxy, and the addition of the quest guide was huge. I'm moving this to a recommend - it's got its flaws, but the writing and humor are great, and the game itself is only like 12 hours to beat.

Star Control 2 was of my favorite games back in the 386 era. Despite the controversy at this games release. It is a worthy Star Control title, I enjoyed it, and I wish there was more. It's hard for me to judge this game alone without the rear view nostalgia of the original games so take this as a biased review. It's clear Stardock respected the original game and had something to add.

I played Star Control 2 about 30 years ago and was hooked, cool precursor ship, Ur-Quan takeover, grinding for resources, finding strange new species, trying to create alliances through quests, developing melee strategies, enjoying the music and story lines with a solid dose of humor. Star Control Origins brought me back so it gets all the stars in that department. Some things are lacking i think, no quasi space, base ship could have been cooler and maybe cooler dynamics on the planets.. I could go on but I had a blast playing it with my daughter just like i did when i played it with my brother when i was a kid.

Never heard about the series and couldn't even remember when I got the game. But what a pleasant surprise it was!

Gameplay-wise it is very simple. Sometimes I even get a feeling that not everybody knew exactly what they were doing, but they surely had a great fun working on the game.
For example, there is little variety in exploration. You fly for a bit, then you land your hovercraft, go to some point and activate it. Or collect some resource. That's it.
Combat is much more varied. There are lots of ships, each with it's own quirk and weapon types. This part is not exactly my cup of tea however, although it didn't prevent me from enjoying the same since you can make AI fight for you.

The writing and presentation though... is simply stellar.
The visual style is great. Aliens, planets, ship design - everything is distinct and very fitting. Worlds lit by some weirdly colored star are a pleasure to look at.
Story and writing are excellent. This is a comedy game and a good one at that. Voice acting nails the delivery perfectly as well. This part alone is worth the price.

Overall, this is a great game and well worth the recommendation.

It says I only played for two hours but it felt like a whole lot longer. In a couple hours I did not feel any sense of progress, had no clear idea of what progress looks like, and did not feel compelled to dig deeper. There is a tremendous amount of very shallow content here and I did not feel engaged or interested at all. Also, I don't have many games with cutscenes and now I remember why.

I loved Star Star Control II back in the 90s so I was eager for this game to be released. This game was well written and captures that charm and humor even if they aren't using the species of aliens present in the earlier series. Highly advise trying it out if you enjoy sci-fi, action/adventure games, and quirky humor. I hope they eventually make a sequel to this game, I'll buy that too if it ever comes out.

I feel bad the developers wasted such a great opportunity to release a successful reboot of this series. Here is the issue with the game: it lacks engaging mechanics. It becomes very repetitive fast with no clear objective. Given how many good games are out there, even if this game was free, its just not worth your time to play. I don't understand how a "game" development company in this day and age would not understand basic game design mechanics. They basically compiled a lot of disjointed features together and expect the player to spend countless hours doing the same silly things over and over again. I rather walk outside listening to music than play this game hahaha.

Хорошее перенесение классики Star Control/Ur-Quan Masters на современный графический движок. Кто знаком с оригиналом, те уже понимают, что это за игра. Аркадный симулятор космического корабля землян, по стечению обстоятельств получившего гиперпространственный двигатель, и исследующего нашу ветку галактики в попытке спасти человечество от смертельной угрозы (или нескольких). Практически все плюсы и минусы оригинала перенесены в эту игру. Из плюсов - это разнообразные расы инопланетян, сделанные с неплохим юмором, и множество звездных систем с планетами, где бывают интересные встречи и попадаются разные артефакты, и разные варианты решения галактических проблем. Из минусов - однообразный сбор ресурсов на планетах, страшно устаревшие бои в виде аркадных стрелялок а-ля "астероиды". В целом игру рекомендую.

It's a clear love letter to Star Control II, with heavy inspirations from the original story line. Star Control II is still one the best games ever made, so the fact that this is a modern version of it, makes it worth the play by default.

The alien encounters are polished and are equally funny and entertaining as the original. Fighting alien space ships still gives the thrill and excitement, especially since your vessel is slowly upgraded during your quests, allowing more effective weapons, etc. The only part which is less compared to the original, is the resource gathering on planets. The 2d planet map has been replaced with a 3d planet and it just doesn't feel the same. In the original, you'd see all resources at once, which made you plan a path to collect all minerals as fast as possible, which was fun and exciting. The new 3d visualization lacks this overview, resulting in just randomly going around trying to find the minerals.

Nevertheless, still highly recommended for people who loved the original and those who enjoy space exploration in a large universe with whacky aliens and humorous encounters.

Моё мнение. Игрока кто любил серию StarControl 2 вышедший 1992 году. Проходил её раза 3-4.
Любителей этой серии старой игры. НЕ РЕКОМЕНДУЮ играть в это убогое г....о серии SC. С графикой для детей 5-10 лет.
Разработчики изменили сюжет, понапридумывали какой то бредятины.
Это первая игра которую я прошёл не поняв что прошёл. Сам не понял как. Зная сюжет оригинальной игры 1992 года, ждал концовки, а всё ушло вообще в какие то другие ворота. Зачем надо было влазить в хороший сюжет добавляя в глобальную сюжетную линию хрень... ладно не буду спойлерить.

Вывод:
* Кто любит серию старых игр SC - не рекомендую играть в эту игру и портить себе воспоминания.
* Кто первый раз играет в эту серию - пройдите её, а потом пройдите оригинальную игру 1992 года, сейчас она есть с нормальным переводом и с HD графикой. Поймёте разницу.
* Техническая часть игры, отвратительная. В видео вставках у меня i9 + 3080 = перегрев видюхи и краш. Каааак??? Скажите каааак? Умудрились такое сделать. Перекодировать в нормальный формат видео религия не позволяет? Надо использовать кодек который видюху перегревает... Нет слов.
* Сбор ресурсов на планетах, самая отвратная реализация.... шатл то застревает, то не прыгает через горы, то переворачивается и багуется.

В общем, я остался сильно не доволен игрой. Разрабам "-" за переписывание сюжета и кривые видео вставки, которые не исправили 8 лет спустя.

Best Planetary exploration and anomaly exploration game I have played. Wish there would be more games of this type out there, that dare to imagine the not known and make it a journey. An sich vermutlich ein tolles Game um den Weltraum zu erkunden, neue Spezies kennenzulernen, die eigene Flotte/ Allianz zu verbessern usw.
ALLERDINGS hatte ich gehofft, all dies dank "Controller Support" auf der Couch machen zu dürfen. Stattdessen sind trotz der Tatsache, dass dies sehr wohl komfortabel möglich wäre die Funktionen gerade Mal auf die mindesten Bedienelemente beschränkt und sogar dort sind noch falsche Beschriftungen für die Tasten drin. Eigentlich könnte man easy alle Funktionen die man braucht um das Game zu spielen locker auf ein modernes Gamepad legen - hat man aber verpasst. Absolut nicht nachvollziehbar für mich, da man das Game sonst bestimmt auch Klasse für Konsolen anbieten könnte. Überleg noch ob ichs refunde... Schade denn eigentlich ist es super charmant.

这是一个很老的游戏系列，我是在3DO平台上玩的，大约是在1996年左右我才16，17岁的时候，玩的不亦乐乎，那个暑假都是畅游在各个星球里探索，哈哈，从怀旧角度来说，新游戏的系统各方面制作的和以前的版本很接近，图形更是大的跨越，真棒！但可能对于新接触的玩家会不友好，是不是觉得系统和操作非常古怪???我想说，对于这些，制作组开发初衷应该就是不脱离原版，这从新本的游戏副标题上就能看出来，随后游戏里的战斗系统，升级飞船系统，探索宇宙的方式，还有各种天马行空的外星人等等，完美的复刻，纯粹的怀旧，对于当年玩过这个老版本的我来说是多么的亲切和熟悉，感谢你们，制作组！把一个中年人成功的拉回了少年时代的那个暑假里！最后如果非要说还有什么遗憾，那就是不那么准确甚至是滑稽的中文翻译了，希望能有改进！

I have been aware of and influenced by the Star Control games for 30+ years at this point, but I only finally completed one here in 2025. I have to say, I am sorry it took me this long, but I finally understand what I was missing (even if I realize this was not really made by any of the same people as any of the previous titles).

Star Control: Origins is a series of deep and intriguing contemplations about the nature of exploration, war, friendship, motivation, religion, deception, and self-justification, all wrapped up in a game where you explore large swaths of the universe and meet dozens of alien races with their own goals and motivations, sometimes breaking to shoot lasers at tiny ships or pick up valuables on a Little Prince-sized planetoid, and all in a setting graphically reminiscent of Paw Patrol. And it is fantastic.

If I have anything at all negative to say about this game it is that you move slowly enough at the start that it took me a few tries to actually finish exploring the starting solar system despite me exploring similar solar systems in a few minutes at most by the end of the game. Once the pace picks up a bit, so too does the game's fun, and honestly both continue accelerating pretty well together. You feel like you are progressing not only mechanically but also socially and, like, civilizationally, as you continue putting together the pieces of the grand mysteries of what the hell is going on and how in the world you are involved in it all.

This game reminds me in some sense of the System Shock remake--and yes I realize that came out -after- Star Control: Origins--but both crucially recognized that great design is great design, and keeping almost everything about the original game(s) intact when recreating things for a modern audience, while smoothing over any infamously rough aspects of the design or mechanics, proved absolutely the right call in both cases. Star Control: Origins even basically kept the same music that played when you flew through hyperspace in Star Control ][, which certainly made my Demoscene heart happy to hear. And I even saw that the developers smoothed over things with the developers of the first two Star Control games and seemingly they started integrating their designs by the time of the expansion here; dare I hope for a Star Control IV: Origins II? That would probably end up my favorite space game ever if it came out as well as I am envisioning.

I never played any of the old star control games, so I can't draw parallels, and I'm coming into this with no particular expectations.
I've seen several reviews complaining about graphics and writing. For me graphics are not critical - I found them perfectly serviceable, but there wasn't anything impressive there. The character designs and art were decent to my eyes, they just chose to make it cartoon-y, which was fine with me. The writing was certainly silly but I found it amusing rather than offensive like some did. The overall story was decent in my opinion and the different interactions were fun to navigate.
The gameplay was enjoyable overall, but not spectacular. Exploration was fun, and there was something to do in most star systems, of which there were many. Upgrading the ship was enjoyable, though not particularly challenging - exploration being the primary requirement. Collecting resources was a bit tedious, but you don't have to spend a lot of time doing it. Combat is easy to find and offers similar rewards for the same time spent. I still preferred to collect resources for my cash, because combat wasn't particularly fun to me either. It wasn't terrible but running away from the enemy ship and taking shots from far away is the easiest way to not lose ships, and that takes forever. The variety of ships and weapons was pretty good but i do wish they were a bit more maneuverable/easier to control/aim
Overall I thought the game was decent, though not exceptional in any way.

游戏于2018 年 9 月 21 日在steam发行。
我在2022 年 7 月 19 日于打折期间以原价40%价格购入，即36元。
在前几天，也就是现在2025年1月进行游玩。去掉部分挂机休息时间和刷钱时间，主线大约15个小时上下。
steam指导的汇率标准更新，全游戏统一涨价，我不知道这个游戏在那之后的史低价格如何。

综合评价：粪水泥巴坑，爱玩的不会在意臭。
尤其不推荐重叙事爱好者和科幻爱好者。
原价完全不值，36元也性价比极差。
游戏玩法类似孢子太空阶段，但少了很多东西。玩家作为自由外交官兼人类唯一的太空军队在太空舞台合纵连横。
但作为能够代表全人类做出重大决定的个体，人类唯一的太空武装力量，我在家要补给还得自己花钱。
飞船不能进星球，登录地表只能通过车子，但不能下车，地表的可交互物也仅限于纯信息的对话框。
故事中等偏下，而且文本量很低。美式个人英雄主义+“科学冒险”故事，里面没有任何科学科幻相关的介绍，冒险的程度在目前看来也仅限于小学生认知水平。而且大部分的情节都有种非常草率的感觉。
半开放世界的多线线性故事，有一些零散的支线故事，但基本就是作为小学生帮幼儿园吵架小孩和解，不然就是雇佣兵任务。
中文基本完全机翻，有大量的翻译前后不一致，还有小部分字体缺失。偶尔会有贴图丢失的透明交互物。
不同国家（种族）有各自的说话风格，配音有一点意思，配上动画还算有趣。搞笑是游戏仅有的优点。但是感觉花这个钱不如干点别的

游玩建议：不建议键鼠，从控制界面键鼠布局和部分机制设计角度来看，应该是优先做的手柄。键鼠在地面任务时手感奇差无比。
任务目标和信息日志是分开的。目标更清晰直接，会自动整理，但是不能从这里点击地址快速导航。
而日志会把从游戏开始的每次对话在概括后记录成一整串，并且很多地点和信息在这显示了任务目标里不会有，自动导航只能在这里才能点击地址直接定位。
在每次接到新任务或线索后，记得去日志翻看一下，点地址自动导航之后再打开地图去看，然后手动设置标记点记下位置。
对面是小飞船用自动战斗，大飞船用手动。

游戏外的槽点：50%的成就都是模拟对战模式的，但从这一类成就的拥有数量（从0.3%到5%不等）来看就知道有多少人在意了

....I would literally jettison her right into space.

This is the first interaction of the game. Why do people write such absurd & unbelievably quirky characters these days, it's as if dialogue writers have never had a normal human interaction in their life.

Beyond that, the gameplay is an absolute snooze fest and the controls are abysmal. Who the heck imagined flying your spaceship around a solar system with no system map and sluggish & slippery tank controls on a 2d vector was fun?

Driving on the surface of planets is even worse as you cannot seem to change your elevation at all, you can just skim along the surface and you are forced to bounce off of mountains like everything is made out of rubber or drive extremely slowly.

Combat is a horrendous exercise in tedium and frustration and not in a good way whatsoever.
