A fun and easy 5-hour tactical romp. I wish the main character had been actually evil and doing evil things. Oh well, still a lovely game.
Reverse crawl is a turn based strategy RPG where you fight in a grid system. The gimmick was supposed to be that you are the "bad guy" defeating the heroes, but it kind of loses the plot mid-way as the good guys are actually the bad guys and you are in fact trying to bring peace to the land (etc etc).
Questionable plot aside, the game is reasonably balanced where each battle takes a bit of thought. With the talent point system there are lots of viable strategies. Each run is somewhat randomized so you can do a few playthroughs and still see new units, spells and such.
For achievement hunters, it takes 8-10 hours and will take multiple playthroughs as many achievements require you to pick different options at the scripted story events. Each run takes around 3-4 hours so it's overall fairly easy.
Overall 7/10. Not a ton of depth, but a decent short game to scratch a SRPG itch.

Reverse Crawl absolutely exudes a sense of charm. Despite carrying the "villain protagonist" tag, the king and his daughter are very much the heroes of the story, and it's hard not to like them. Although I wouldn't call this anything close to a story-rich game, there were more character interactions and dialogue than I expected, and the character art is extremely fun and expressive. I definitely felt more emotion from this game than I expected to, and across a broader range of feelings than I anticipated.
At every turn, Reverse Crawl exceeded my expectations, which were admittedly low, but I can say with confidence that this game is more than it appears on the surface.
Always liked this dev, and his artstyle. Since the good old days ;)

I started playing this a few years ago, and I am not sure why I quit before the end--I probably got busy with work. I came back, started over, and finished it in just under 8 hours. It was a good short game. The game play is relaxing and enjoyable., the art work is suitable, the characters are entertaining--I was cheering for them, and the story was nothing special and yet good enough that I wanted to complete it.
The price is reasonable and there are various choices that both change the progress and the outcome of the game. Furthermore, there is an endless more, although I have not tried it yet.
So, if you are interested in a casual, turn-based, fantasy RPG with moderate replayability at a good price, this is your game!
It's fun especially for the absurdly low price tag, but honestly the way the game is set up makes it too easy. This is especially true if you use the spider wave because the Spider Queen is stupid busted.

Cons: locked at 30fps, only 3 save slots, no graphical settings, RNG, during combat units will overlap each other visually – there is no 3D screen rotation, when summoning minions - it will not let you decide which spot on the map to summon them, when opening chests there is no inventory to see the items you’ve retrieved
Overall, a good indie game at an affordable price point, it takes about 5 hours to complete.

Fun little indie game that's very indie in many charming ways. No bugs to think of.
I like Nerdook games, I find them charming.
I didnt get the title of this game but its a very simple hexgrid tactics game, of note, I like the variety of game mechanics each controllable unit had, from undead to wolves, to trolls to dragons, everything had its unique way to attack and it was fun trying them all out.
I wished It had more rooms to mix units from different groups, so you could make your own squad, instead, you can choose from a number of different "parties" to control against the enemy group you will face, i think this was all done in the name of balance.
The game itself was short and easy, you can finish all 25 chapters in a few hours and get 100% achievements in a day or two, you'll need 2 and a half playthroughs minimum for that.
The game was mostly done by one person around 10 years ago, so yeah, it was both nostalgic and entertaining for me, made me remember my times at Kongregate playing flash games.
In general, art, music, story, all were decent but nothing special in my opinion, it a well made game, It did crash on me but only if I tabbed out, didnt find any other bugs but I did find some mechanics exploits to win, although you could win that way, it was tedious so I only used it once in my first final boss fight.
Reverse Crawl gets 13 spiders that overwhelmed my enemies out of 20 zombies in my endless horde thanks to the princess necromancy cooldown and melee life regen and armor. :)
Reverse Crawl is great! It has a well-developed plot, fun characters, a solid but not overwhelming combat system, intuitive upgrade systems, an enormous host of controllable units, and a lot more replayability than you'd expect. I love both the story and the gameplay.
If you're a turn-based strategy lover, note that the gameplay may not be terribly difficult, but the tactics are still great fun.
I got this game on sale for a dollar, even though it's worth buying at full price! I recommend this game to strategists, achievement hunters, and aspiring necromancers.

Turn based RTS fighter game. The gameplay loop is solid, it has good enemy variety aswell as troop variety. Has some balancing issues in the final few chapters with a lot of your troops being completely overpowered, but this comes in handy during the 3rd playthrough. The achievements are very easy to get, but to get 100% you need 2.5 playthroughs. All in all it was a good game, good animation quality with every "class" having different attack animations
Biggest issue with this game is how much the enemy can spam their abilities, take powerstrike for example, any enemy can use it on every turn, meanwhile your characters have to wait 1 turn before being able to use it again.
No volume sliders, just on/off.

I have barely scratched the surface of this game, I'm sure, but I just had one of the most visceral negative reactions I have ever had to a video game.
There is no gameplay element that makes this feel at all like "you are the dungeon." This is a very false claim. Everything is extremely crude and simplistic.
Really, I just have never been more turned off by the interface and appearance of a game. I just can not continue playing this.

Lovely little game. I wasn't sure what to expect based on the description, but it ended up being quite a fun experience with solid combat that doesn't take too much worrying, but still lets you make choices to further destroy enemies and make your teams stronger. There's a decent amount of choice in how you use perks and the like to strengthen your army, but not to a degree where you'll get choice anxiety. I personally enjoyed swarming all the enemies with my horde of zombies.
I will note, however, that some of the late-game combat can get to be a bit of a slog as enemy (and sometimes ally) health starts to get really high. While this isn't generally a big problem and fights still go more than fast enough, the first guardian fight especially felt like a bit of a weakpoint, as it amounted to me just pressing the same button once for some 30 turns.
Aside from that though, the game is great fun and 100% worth to get even at full price for a quick and enjoyable experience that'll suck you in for a bit and let you leave before you really start to get bored of it.

Cute and silly turn-based RPG indie game with multi-choice system that can be fun to experiment with. It has a very simplistic and bare-bones progression curve and it will punish you severely for not strategizing against the AI.

Presque trois mois plus tard, je me décide à écrire cette évaluation avant que les quelques souvenirs qui me restent ne s'évanouissent. Alors, pourquoi ai-je arrêté ? Parce que je ne me suis pas senti libre ; parce que cela m'a profondément frustré.
Après des débuts relativement intéressants, je me suis retrouvé à combattre (je crois pour la 2e fois) ceux qui gouvernent à présent mon ancien royaume. Alors que je pensais la victoire envisageable, au milieu de la confrontation, le programme a déterminé arbitrairement que j'avais été défait. Visiblement, c'est scripté ainsi. Pas moyen d'y échapper ! À cette étape de l'aventure, tu es obligé de perdre et de choisir un malus/malédiction parmi trois possibilités afin de pouvoir continuer l'histoire. Mon esprit a refusé ce qui me semblait être une injustice. La frustration était si vive que j'ai fermé (définitivement ?) ce jeu (de dupes). Qu'allait m'imposer ensuite ces scénaristes castrateurs ? Être confronté à de nouvelles décisions despotiques m'est terriblement insupportable.
Dans un roman graphique, j'accepterai de suivre la trame scriptée. Par contre, dans un RPG, je trouve cela totalement inadmissible d'où cette évaluation très négative.

Très bon tactical rogue lite sans prétention et fait avec amour par un amateur. Le jeu est plaisant, rythmé, drôle ergonomique et dynamique. Les mécaniques de gameplay sont assez variés (même s'il on peut noté qq problèmes d'équilibrages qui font que le jeu est un peu trop simple). Le fait d'incarné une armée de undead contre des héros est un gros plus pour moi (on se refait pas).
Le jeu tient facilement 6-7h (en faisant 2 fois la campagne pour découvrir de nouveaux éléments), après le jeu n'a plus grand chose à offrir.
Pour le prix n'hésitez à tester !

There's a fun combat system going on, and the gameplay loop is straight-forward.
Decent little quick game, fun story and good humor. I will point out though, you're not really building a dungeon like i first gathered from the description.
For those perfecting games, it requires 3 playthoughs but that's not to bad. First playthough took around 5-6 hours while reading the story, and i'm a slow reader, but the 2 next only took a couple of hours each.
Quick tip, get the Goblin sharman, it likely carried me alot.

You're really NOT the dungeon, if you ask me. You just kinda control your people and defend against heroes. It is pretty basic, only runs at 30hz, and the sound is broken for me. If those last two weren't true, then I would have given it more time, but it just isn't worth the time sitting in silence at 30hz. Just kinda basic and looks like it is going to be somewhat repetitive. Again though, I'd need the sound and a good playing experience to play more

Characters use 2D, cartoonish style with a cute-ish look, and the backgrounds are varied and lush in color. It's nice to see the combination that both have to offer - everything looks like how a [i]Flash[/i] game is supposed to be, and although the game is not made in that engine, I meant it as a compliment. The style might look "ugly" compared to other high-budget games, but it doesn't look cheap either. The interface, background, and even text complement each other to create a style that is unique and captivating at the same time.

The story is mainly used as a material for the game's progression. Dialogues are quick and brief, allowing you to shift back to the gameplay right away. Some choices will also be available in some chapters, branching the story into several paths. Don't expect it to be too detailed, though. The only thing that matters the most is the ending, and as I said before, dialogues are quick and brief.

[b]Reverse Crawl[/b] is a turn-based strategy game where you have to fight waves of enemies across 25 chapters. You can choose between several predetermined squads to deploy on the stage and replace them whenever they are wiped out - just like how enemies have several squads to deploy, you also can deploy up to a certain number of squads, which depends on the chapter you are in. Each chapter has 3 randomized paths that you can choose, giving different rewards based on the path that you take. Some chapters are excluded from this rule though, adding more to the story by providing a predetermined fight after a few chapters.
Different squads have different abilities and numbers, allowing you to use the one that suits your playstyle and enemy type. This creates an imbalance in the game, as weaker squads will hardly be chosen at all. There might be times when the enemy squad might be unfavorable to a certain group, but you can easily switch the orders of your favorite squads to bypass it. However, this also means that the game will be harder if you have weaker squads. I had trouble with the difficulty at the beginning since I didn't know which squads are the best, especially since all choices don't give exact information about the reward that I would get.

Despite having only 25 battles to play, you are still allowed to lose. Losing will retain the exp that you get, allowing you to retry the fight with a different strategy and higher level. Level doesn't matter most of the time though, especially since upgrades hardly affect a battle's outcome. Your strategy is the one that matters, which might or might not depend on the squads that you have. I had to use a lot of different strategies in my first playthrough due to my weaker squad pool, although my second playthrough became easier because I already knew which squad I had to use.

Yep, the game is short - it only lasts for 3.7h to me. I'm not complaining, though. I gain more satisfaction playing this game compared to most 10+ hour games. Besides, you can always replay it if you want more. The game has 3 endings and achievement hunters need to either replay the game at least three times or make a backup save manually to get everything. One achievement can also take a long time to get due to the randomized nature of the game. As for the difficulty, it might be tough if you don't know what to do, but it's not to the point that will make you give up.

No, you are NOT the dungeon.
You take the role of a princess and her resurrected father after an evil queen took their land. You simply control typically evil goons like skeletons, zombies, ghosts and so on. But you are NOT THE DUNGEON trying to force the heroes back while they explore the dungeon. That's false advertisment.
Sadly the game isn't very good either. You click on the enemys for some time and win - or not, since the enemys have ridiculously high health and attack damage. Later in the game I could summon a really strong minion of my own but that lead to over 50 rounds of clicking since we both had high health but did little damage due to our armor and stats.
The story is kinda there and I was like "well, it doesn't get in my way so why not". But in the middle of the game the characters just decided to raid the castle and go against the queen. I won and killed her, just for her to come back to life and kill my minions on the field and making me loose the round - even though I had still two minion groups left. You are supposed to fail at this point and that just frustrated me cause I thought "hey I did really well against the boss" just to be told "no, the game doesn't allow you to win here".
I can't recommend it. I thought I would play the story two more times for the other achievements but everytime I find myself not wanting to lose another hour to this game.
Very, very light as a tactical RPG. Stats and mechanics are not explained very well, you have no idea how enemy abilities work, making it very difficult to plan anything. If you're looking for a good tactical RPG, this is not what you are looking for.

Что касается геймплея. Игровой процесс представляет собой пошаговую тактику, где вся суть сражений сводится к поединкам на карте, поделённой на гексагоны. Прямо как в "King's Bounty" или "Героях".
Вы получаете разнообразные квесты, в ходе выполнения которых и предстоит истреблять недругов. Примечательно, что перед каждой стычкой вы вольны выбрать какой отряд послать в бой, которые состоят из множества разнообразных монстров, имеющих свои характеристики. По мере прохождения бестиарий будет пополняться новыми существами. А какими, зависит от вашего выбора в сюжетных перепетиях. Так же, продвигаясь по игре, вы будете получать новые возможности, усиливающие ваших монстров.
Отдельно замечу, что в игре есть магия, но для неё используется не шкала маны, а уровень угрозы. Изначально накапливается он, в основном, по мере уничтожения противников, но потом появляются и другие возможности. А ещё у вас есть возможность приручить эпичное существо (изрядно так выручает, особенно в финальных поединках).
В общем, игра весьма неплохая. И даже несмотря на отсутствие русского языка, сюжет интуитивно понятен. В игре приятная пиксельная графика и отличное музыкальное сопровождение (эмбиент что надо). Пройти игру можно за несколько часов, но она имеет несколько сюжетных развилок, концовок и Новую игру+, что делает её весьма реиграбельной.

First of all it´s false that YOU are the dungeon has it is said in the description, BUT it is true you control the typically evil units, like skeletons, zombies, goblins and etc. You are not the dungeon because you are the one attacking, for YOU to be the dungeon you should be the one defending your supposed dungeon.
The game was fun, maybe around 3 to 4 hours of content, if you like this type of dungeon crawling, an hex-like map with turn-based combat I would say buy it, the game is cheap, if you get a promotion even better.
The artstyle is not amazing or anything but it gets the job done, there are some epic soundtracks in some battles, that was cool.
The story seems to be somewhat comical but it´s not bad, it´s just simple, it also gets the job done for this game.
In this game you control armies of undead has a Revenant King, something wich we don´t have much of, necromancer games I mean, you will have to make choices that will impact the strength of your soldiers, wich powers, wich soldiers you have or wich soldiers join your army, until in the end you are faced with the final boss.
The game also features an endless mode wich is cool if you want to replay it in the future.
I would say for a game at this price, it´s worth it.

This game is a hidden gem. A simple and extremely fun game I find myself going back to play. The creator did a great job.
Story is shallow, but that is to be expected. The problem is that the game was too easy for me, it just became a point and click, and winning battles just wasn't satisfying after the first hour, because with every new mission you win, you get a bunch of strong characters to use in the upcoming battles, so much so that your starting character (the king) becomes obsolete, and if you get bad traits, just reroll; you get 3 rerolls which is more than enough.
Your choice in upgrades don't really matter because the increment in value is so minute (compared to what you have to spend to get them). At the end of every battle, you are given 3 choices to upgrade your team, but many times there's a caveat attached to these upgrades which you know nothing about until you get it because the description was too simple.
The game description is also misleading. It implies you're building a dungeon for enemies to deal with. The game is far from that; it's a rogue-like where you instead go around killing stuff; there's no mention of a dungeon, there's no customzing/upgrading of a dungeon, and there's definitely no adventurer raiding your dungeon whatsoever. Heck, half of your battles are out in the open, where it's obviously not a dungeon.
The missions you get per chapter is randomized (something like rogue-like), which weakens the sense of continuity in the game (aside from the fact that you get a few scripted encounters every few missions).
It's not horrible for its price, but personally, I don't think it deserves a particularly strong review either.

Reverse Crawl is a fairly basic and thoughtful strategy RPG. There isn't anything particularly groundbreaking here, and that's okay because it does what it does well without reinventing the wheel. The combat is hex-based and turn-based, and you end up getting lots of options to customize your build (special abilities and spells), possible minions and overall 'army.'
I beat it four hours, and it was just simple, straightforward good times.
You can replay for different endings (the choices appear to be both story-wise and mechanically impactful), do new-game+ to carry over some customizations from your first playthrough with some added challenge to balance it, or do an endless dungeon mode where you keep fighting and leveling up to flesh out the upgrade tree (you don't get anywhere near enough levels to 'max out' the different choices).

A simple pretty easy dungeon turn based "team" builder. Achievements are 100% available just via beating the game 3 times, it took me roughly 14 hours. I enjoyed the short stories, and the variety of units. Overall a solid game especially when it's on sale.
Great game by author of Flash hits, Reverse Crawl is nice take on King's Bounty formula and it's clones.
Instead of being heroic hero you are anti-hero acting as dungeon master and leading army of "dark" creatures. Most of fights have you face powers of good to stop them in their greedy quest or fighting other dark forces to dominate them and add into roster of possible choices.
Plot is not your great epic, but still nice and funny story leaning on parody and there are always three options, meaning you will need three walkthroughs to see whole game and get all endings.
Battles are your typical tactical strategy with monsters and spells, but some random added to make things a bit spicy, can't complain about it, you still can overcome it with thoughtful maneuvers by your troops.
Graphics and music are nice, even more if you like Nerdook's doodle style.
Game could feel too straight and feel not like adventure compared to rivals like Braveland, but hey, that's what evil lords do. Compared to situation King's Bounty is in now (losing it's roots and going for graphics more than gameplay), Reverse Crawl is cheap and nice game for one-three evenings worth it's price.

Reverse Crawl is played as a campaign over a series of turn-based battles. In each battle you pick from among available squads (i.e. Minions), each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each squad is a fixed mix/match of different characters. These characters may be ranged, magic dealing, melee, and may have access to special move sets or skills. You also have access to a global sets of powers fueled by a resource called Threat, which is primarily built up through the defeat of enemies. After a set number of battles, the game ends (after you beat the boss of course).
In between battles, you have access to an array of team-wide upgrades over a variety of skill trees.

Summary: I actually really liked this game. It's a shame the developer made the game so short. You barely scratch the surface of the skill tree and the game is over. Further, future playthroughs should have been made harder, maybe adding or reducing the number of reinforcements brought into battle by one or both sides. Still on sale, its pretty close to a must buy.

Unlike the description, you are not the dungeon. There is nothing reverse about this, nor is it a crawl. There isnt even a dungeon. Its a cute story but it reminds me too much of other, better games which it seems to rip off ideas from. Feels like a first attempt from a new developer. Lacks depth.
Unfortunately I waited too long to play it and its past the 14 day window for a refund.
Play as a baddie and feel good about it! If you like stuff like the undead campaign from WC3 then you'll probably enjoy this too for about the same reasons.
This isn't a "reverse crawl" exactly, it's more like a turn based tactics simulator. You do recruit/upgrade groups of monsters as your units which is very fun. There's also a bit of choices in the story which is nice and the difficulty curve is just right. The game is fairly short but still fun and the writing is cute.

From simple reanimated skeletons and zombies, to mighty ancient constructs, cursed spirits and more, REVC has an ample roster of creatures, all with their unique traits and skills, for the Revenant King to command. Many of them will be unlocked throughout the campaign, after finishing specific quest-lines. Decisions on story events also may lead to unlocking, or being locked out of, some of them.

Depending on the chosen encounters on each passing day, the outcome in terms of rewards, unlocked skills, units and unique bonuses / maluses will be significantly different. There is no way to experience everything in a single run, a factor that opens up to substantial replay value even after finishing the game the first time. It'll take at the very least 3-4 runs to see / unlock every possible thing.

Each battle won feels rewarding in progression terms, as it will always unlock one passive upgrade (chosen among three) for the current unit roster, while also multiple skill points to distribute in the various passive skill trees, that bestow powerful buffs and even unlock new active abilities. In some cases, unique or legendary units may also be unlocked after some levels, adding even more novelty to the next encounter.

Even without the deeper mechanics one would expect from many other turn-based RPG titles, REVC manages to execute well its simplistic combat system, and ultimately delivers a polished, functional experience. Certainly it's not aimed to hardcore veterans, but more to RPG fans that want to unwind with something simpler and laid-back. The unique traits, resistances and nuances of each unit add just enough depth to keep things interesting.

Playing this game in 1440p was an eyesore, as most elements scaled really badly. Blurry characters and interfaces will be the routine for those using higher-resolution displays. Without any option to set resolution and seemingly no scaling in the game engine, REVC looks quite awful on modern screens.

In the later game phases, the amount of devastating powers and powerful units unlocked, will be simply too much for the enemies to stand a chance, in most cases. The fact players can deploy multiple behemoths like golems or other high HP, high Damage, high AoE units bundled together, just ruins the balance compared to what the enemies can muster. It becomes too easy, without any difficulty option to offset the problem.

[b]Encounter Selection[/b]
From the beginning of the adventure, and after every cleared combat scenario, there will be a choice to make between three different new levels that appear in a world map screen. Some instances may repeat themselves over time, such as recurring bonus events, while others are unique and may also follow a quest-line structure, where more encounters related to the same "topic" are unlocked after clearing previous ones. That's it, there is no exploration or anything else whatsoever, after selecting a level, the game will simply fade out to the combat arena, and start the fight.
[b]Combat[/b]
Plays out in a turn-based fashion, with each enemy and allied unit acting in a specified turn order independently. There is no way to actually see the turn order, which is kind of annoying in terms of planning ahead. Each creature can use a normal attack on adjacent units if melee, or target any unit on the field if ranged, regardless of distance. Special attacks such as "Power Strike" which is a guaranteed crit at 40% miss chance cost, "Focused Attack" with better accuracy and damage or other unique skills are present, depending on the unit at hand.
Units are deployed in "waves", each consisting in a selected group of creatures that may have a unique passive trait, randomized each time, such as "Armored" (more armor) "Evil" (generates more Threat to cast spells) and so on. Threat is like Mana, and used by the King himself to cast active abilities that can damage foes, stun them, heal allies and other effects - many of these are unlocked via skill tree upgrades or unique quests. Defeat occurs if the King's forces have no more Unit Waves to send, and all allied units are defeated before the enemy runs out of manpower. There are critical hits, dodge chances, elemental resistances and similar stats one would expect by the "average" RPG, as well.
[b]Upgrading Phase[/b]
Occurs after each battle, and allows distributing skill points in one of the six skill branches, that give passive bonuses to units of a specific category (like Undead units for the Necromancy tree) or sometimes unlock new active abilities. There also are Unit Upgrades, one can be selected after each level as well, and may greatly enhance or modify the functioning of one of the various Units at the King's disposal, so the next deployment they will be stronger.
[b]Endless Mode[/b]
Is a separate mode unlocked after finishing the game once. The King's forces will be pitted against endless waves of heroes, monsters and pretty much anything else the game can throw at them, to see how long they're able to last before defeat. In-between waves there is the chance to acquire Treasure Chests for upgrades on a unit, passive skills and more.

Cheap Fun!
Simple gameplay with just enough depth to keep players engaged for more than one run.
The story is simple and unpretentious with some funny dialogue.
Short campaign made a little bit better with game+ and an infinite mode.
In short, if you have an itch for a little turn based distraction and a few bucks laying around your steam wallet, go for it! It's not memorable, but it will scratch that itch.
Great game with simple features and decent mechanics. I feel like I am playing Team Fight Tactics but with less demanding choices.

Fun and quick. Don't expect a long, highly involved game.
There are two layers to the game, the combat layer and the story layer. The core of the game is grid based combat on a small map. Combat is fun and interesting with meaningful tactical choices to be made. It is also varied and interesting with multiple units types and abilities.
The story layer is where you chose what combat to get into and how to build up your team/warband. For the quick, shorter game that this is, there is a surprising amount of variety. There are numerous interesting and impactful choices to be made both storywise and mechanics-wise.
I very much enjoyed this game and have come back to it a few times. I have had more fun with this game than many other AAA level rpg's that I have played.
Reverse Crawl is an okay time-waster which really feels like a mobile game ported to PC. I did enjoy it for what it is.

For $2 this game is great. So far i Haven't had any problems with bugs but i do say its quite easy. Its a relaxing game that will get your moneys worth if you paid full price for it. great gem to find.
