Play it on intermediate if you want to go through it in a more streamlined way, don't hurt yourself advancing, and this becomes a beautiful Metroidvania that covers the sea like few others do. With 4K the visuals still hold up today. I started this a long time ago, and I thought hey let's get back into this one because I had always been meaning to do so but never found the time.
Only 27% of people have beaten the first boss, which kind of surprised me, but the opening is a bit too free and not quite guided like some would hope for I guess. Push through. Because once you get torpedoes the game completely opens up. Just pay attention to the narration, and your intuition should do the rest with some time. I have as much fun playing this as any of the other top tier games in the genre. It's a nice change to deep dive and get this kind of aesthetic for a fair price.
My only complaint really is with sound. The motor of the vehicle seems to have a light crackling sound before or after the sample begins. It's not overly jarring, but it is bothersome in my headphones at times to hear that weird static sound every now and then. I've heard this on other games with really low-quality samples, so it's not something I expect from Insomniac at all. It bugs me because I love sound, and it comes off as really poor QA for such a studio.
Other than that I fully recommend this game. It's a treat with a warm story and details that will remind you of a good Verne novel visualized quite well on screen. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a very solid game.

A charmingly drawn under sea adventure with full voice narration. Unfortunately I encountered a game breaking bug and could no longer progress. I've read other reviews confirming that this happens. The players aren't the beta testers. Unfortunately I had to change my recommend to a not recommend due to this.
Pretty decent. Highly similar to Aquaria in theme and mechanics. Just as unlikely we'll ever get a sequel though.
A solid 7/10 it is worth the price and very fun beuatiful story. However, the combat is a little lacking. All in all, I had fun and it was worth my time and money

Le jeu regorge de très bonnes idées, mais celles-ci sont malheureusement mal exploitées. Proposer un metroidvania dans un univers sous-marin était pourtant une base prometteuse. Hélas, la direction artistique se révèle fade et peu inspirée.
Du point de vue du gameplay, je m’attendais à un mélange entre metroidvania et shmup, deux styles que j’affectionne particulièrement. Il faudra finalement se contenter d’un jeu davantage orienté aventure et énigmes, comme le résume très bien la fiche. Les phases de tir sont anecdotiques : il y a peu de projectiles à éviter et surtout aucun véritable défi, la difficulté étant quasi inexistante.
À cela s’ajoutent de nombreux bugs de physique : j’ai perdu le compte du nombre de fois où je me suis retrouvé coincé dans un mur. Les objectifs à suivre sont obscurs, heureusement qu’une grosse croix sur la carte indique la direction à prendre.
Le jeu propose plusieurs énigmes plutôt agréables et enchaîne correctement ses différentes phases de gameplay. Les trois combats de boss ont le mérite d’exister et de casser un peu le rythme, mais rien de mémorable non plus.
Il cumule également les défauts du metroidvania, poussés ici à l’excès : un backtracking omniprésent, conséquence directe d’un monde inutilement fouilli et mal structuré.
Malgré tout, le jeu reste agréable à parcourir et procure un certain plaisir. Il manque cependant cruellement de finition. Il tente de surfer sur la vague d’Ori, mais l’exercice s’avère vain. C’est dommage : le jeu avait clairement les cartes en main.

A bit confusing at times, but overall a fairly relaxed metroidvania. Voice only shows up occasionally, but adds for a nice storyline about a girl searching for her missing father.
Song of the Deep really surprised me. I have had the game for a while using an older computer. Since I purchased a new computer, I decided to give it a try. I really like this game. It is a little hard in learning what to do and that is part of its charm. I like the way you must figure out what to do and where to go. The narrative is great and the game it self is truly a surprising , enjoyable game. I plan to start over to listen more carefully how to complete this game. My new favorite.

一开始以为可能流程不是很长，结果发现···emm···

如果第一次玩只走主线，再加上解谜时间也要个10个小时吧。

解谜适中，我要看别人的视频才能通关，看完后发现好像这谜题好简单，我好像又行了···哈哈哈···

- 炸弹开门->雕像部件拼接雕像开门

- 白色->彩色->混光->镭射的光线照明谜题
- 普通->悬浮的滚石压按钮->滚石爆炸开门

- 跟着类似狮子的生物 -> 利用光线吸引生物通过机关

小女孩的父亲是名水手每天都出海，小女孩听着父亲的睡前海上小故事长大，直到有一天父亲再也没有回来了，小女孩一直在海边的山崖那等父亲直到睡着了。
梦中小女孩自己制作了一艘潜水艇开始潜入海中寻找失踪的父亲。
流水账：
进入海中，有很多宝藏，主角拾取金币。
跟随机械海马的行踪获得抓钩，能钩取物品。
在海蟹那通过置换金币购买升级，解锁潜艇加速。
后来遇到了美人鱼并询问她父亲的下落。
跟着美人鱼指向进入黑暗的深海区并解锁探照灯。
进入船只残骸区域利用炸弹消灭可怕的机械潜艇。
使用炸弹打开通路进入深海的蜘蛛巢穴。
利用钩爪将顶部的蜘蛛丝勾走让上方的巨物将蜘蛛压在海底，并解救一小海龙，顺带解锁能量炮。
回去找美人鱼，但美人鱼所在区域没开门，于是从其他路线前进。
路上会找到海螺能让女主离开潜艇游泳，可以通过一些小通道。
通过小通道进入美人鱼的房间，从对方那得知海上灯塔的信息。
女主要去收集3个能量球以便打开灯塔，有3个目标点。
前往右上角，绿色能量球。
在过程中通过小迷宫获得潜水时的攻击破坏的能力，玩家可以在狭小的区域攻击并且通过部分碎石区域，甚至能攻击镜片解锁机关。
前往右下角，获取红色能量球。
在过程中能获得潜水时攻击光线改变光线位置的能力，可以解锁部分光线机关。
最后前往左边，先从右边下方进入黑暗区域，解锁深水炸弹能炸穿墙壁。最后到达目标获得蓝色能量球，再从Boss战的房间离开（这个谜题就很恶心人···一开始在蜘蛛boss战的房间看半天不晓得门咋开，后来才知道入口在地图下方，boss战的门是出口）
女主获得3颗能量球后能进入更深的海域解锁机关进入灯塔。
通过激光解谜最后到达塔顶，让灯塔发光并在塔顶获得声纳装置，用来解锁特殊门禁。
前往海底都市门口通过声纳解锁门禁。
但守卫城市的机械潜艇居然攻击了机械海马！
女主给小海马报仇了，但机械海马凉了。
进入城市深处打败机械头获得发射冰弹的能力，能让部分熔岩门冷却并摧毁；也能让滚球变冷并悬浮起来。
终于在城市深处女主找到了父亲的船只，正打算将其拉动船只顶部却被水流吹到了一个机械迷宫内，迷宫内有只机械乌龟能改变迷宫状态，通过机关消灭它后获得声纳镭射，声纳镭射能击碎绿色的玻璃门并摧毁迷宫的控制装置回到父亲的船只边上。
掀开船只顶棚取得父亲的航海日志，此时可能是因为机械关闭导致一直巨大的章鱼出现并把女主的潜艇整坏了，损坏的潜艇那，女主看了父亲的航海日志，对方希望女主能有个快乐的人生，哪怕他不在。
在女主伤心流泪失落之时小海龙突然出现并带着她去了一片美丽的海域，在这里女主找到了自己的潜艇（咋又冒出新潜艇了！？旧的呢！？）。
女主遇到美人鱼得知如果要城市中部的大门需要大海马，的帮助，要找到大海马需要机械海马。
但机械海马之前被攻击后零件飘散在各处，需要寻找零件并重新拼装起来。
接着3个目标，首先前往底部深海，通过黑漆漆的通道到达底部紫色区域，这里会遇到章鱼，获取物品后会有一群章鱼追这女主直到离开区域。另外2个区域物品获取都不算麻烦。
3个零件拼接好后在美人鱼的帮忙下复活了机械海马并打开了大门求助于大海马？
大海马称可能已经太迟了，但女主肯定不会放弃于是机械海马帮女主打开了城市中心的大门，女主进去面对巨大章鱼和章鱼收藏的宝贝。
打疼章鱼后章鱼逃跑了，女主在一堆宝贝中找到了父亲的潜艇并救下父亲，此时由于章鱼逃跑将城市天花板凿出一个洞，碎石掉落，好在有只巨大海龙挡住碎石保护了主角们，原来这是小海龙的母亲。它们带主角们回到岸边。
···主角父女和海龙母女告别···
后来，父亲重新造了新船，一块出海。
女主还计划造新潜艇回去找海里的小伙伴们玩，不过潜艇还在计划中···

Apesar de ser um jogo lançado em 2016 foi legal jogá-lo novamente. Possui um mapa bem grande estilo mereodvania. Só faltou ter mais chefes e alguns outros upgrades para o submarino.

Song of the Deep è un’avventura subacquea davvero affascinante, con ambientazioni ben realizzate e una storia delicata e piuttosto emozionante. I puzzle sono ben pensati, anche se a volte un po’ ripetitivi, e il sistema di controllo può risultare macchinoso in certi momenti. Nonostante qualche difetto, resta un gioco piacevole, soprattutto per chi cerca un’esperienza rilassante e un po' diversa dal solito.
Un bellísimo metroidvania que propone algo diferente: usar un submarino para explorar el fondo marino con todo lo que el género implica. Vendrás por la jugabilidad y la propuesta, te quedarás por la historia y la estupenda banda sonora.
One of few games I have enjoyed doing a replay of.
Story and narration are a bit corny. Controls could be tighter. There is more backtracking than I would like. Physics a little janky at times (I'm looking at you pufferfish)
But it's got a good balance of cute, pretty, and spooky vibes, I liked getting the hang of the submarines weight and handling, it has some cool level design, and it doesn't outstay it's welcome.
Also it works fine on Linux, didn't have to try different version of Proton or anything.
I absolutely love "Song of the Deep"! I got the PS4 version as soon as I saw the box sitting on the shelf of the game store. It just pulled me to it the same way so many other good games just manage to draw you to them. Good games have a tendency to pull you towards them. Not quite the same power of attraction that you get by seeing Mad Dog Macree or "Plumbers don't wear ties" (pdwt - don't even look it up, I still can't believe it was even released, then again, if the CDi not only made it to market, but mystically came to have 216 game titles, mpeg movies not included in this count. I suppose anything's possible). Heck, the 3DO had such crappy games that it took about 2 years for developers (users too! poor devils.) for someone to realize that the 1st version of the 3DO controllers were missing a minor bit of functionality, I have come to cherish in most game systems I have played (not the CDi, of course, but ..others that had releases actually considered games.), but especially automobiles that I drive. It was the minor matter of the capability of moving diagonally. What kind of half #@$ software were people willing to buy, including racing and fighting games for this not to be an issue? I suspect "Pdwt" was a social experiment just to see if indeed the 3do crowd would buy anything. Maybe mind control was involved.
I digress.. I have the tendency to go off topic from time to time. Just in case one of you hadn't noticed.
Back on the subject of "Song of the Deep":
I was sad to hear that still, in mid 2025, there were no plans of expanding on the universe with a 2nd game. Since it came out in 2016, it's probably safe to say if one will come out, they aren't in any hurry to do so. Although it seems that a guy by the name of Brian Hastings has put out a book referred to as a 'companion book' to the game since it expands on the story and gives more background and depth. The protagonist is the same. The chicklet (little chick) in the submarine) named Merryn. In fact, a second book is planned. Dangit! They could easily have gotten those two and made expansions for the game! they wouldn't even have to change anything in the game, just use the same engine!! That annoys me to no end. It's like that game "Dust". I think a 3 year old wrote that script. Or the family cat lay down on the keyboard for a while. Someone said, meh. good enough. ripped it out of the dot matrix printer and sent it in for integration with the magnificent game that resulted.
That's how good it was. It had somewhere between a (on a score between 1 to 100) 3 and a -2 as far as it's story was concerned, yet the game play was so fantastic and the sidekick character was so adorable, seriously, like that cat from shrek, kind of adorable! That there didn't need to be any writing or even any decision making in the whole adventure fiasco. You just kept played using up those hidden energy reserves that us gamer types take out of Gosh knows where when we are that close to collapsing from lack of sleep, drooling and barely making sense, so much so that your pet gelatinous orb in the corner is starting to think you are coming on to it. Or..crap, I don't have a pet gelatinous orb! Drat..., did I somehow text Gorlok to come over instead of typing in the konami code? (I must be brain damaged, we think to ourselves. I couldn't possibly have done that more than once!) Yet you still manage to keep going for that whole extra half hour until you find that damn save point that's already 45minutes overdue and hopefully will last long enough to double check the save message before you collapse from from lack of sleep and mana. I said all that and didn't mention the actual gameplay! holy..* I salute any persistent reader who managed to get this far. Grandma doesn't count, but I can always count on her for at least that one upvote!
This game has a great back story. It almost takes you back to when you were a little kid and you get to take a break in the middle of the day where they give you a cookie and some milk then tell you a story to get you into that sleepy contented mood for that short nap. It really has a pleasant story that has enough realism to stick to the fantasy world standards of logic and probability, so that you don't start doubting what they tell you on your way in. Instead you start immersing yourself into the story of Merryn and her fear for her dad who seemed to have gotten lost and by Jove! She's going after him! In an adorable little submarine, Merryn, (she's the stories chicklet, remember?) goes into the ocean and in the backdrops that often have several backdrops doing parallax at the same time (for those of you born after y2k, that means you have one backdrop with holes in it and behind that you have another backdrop that is moving. It was developed by this company called Parallax back in the 80's or something. this game doubled down on that trick to make sure you have a truly stunning journey into the deep! There will be flooded cities, sunken ships, skeletons and a whole lot of swag. Although it takes forever to gather it if you make bad choices on how to upgrade your little craft. Hey, it only takes one or 2 times to figure this out, so don't worry.
It is a perfect mixture of 2d action, comfy and beautiful graphics, in addition to the excellent soundtrack perfectly tailored to fit the game, that set the perfect mood for exploring civilizations long lost even to legend! Even the obligatory puzzles (which usually suck) aren't that terribly annoying! The background story is well thought of and they keep spoon feeding more of the story to you bit by bit to add to the mystery. Game play, as you might have guessed, is not meant for veteran numb thumbs only which would make it impossible for the novice player, nor does it appeal exclusively to the entry to mid level only gamers because it's too much of a breeze for the experienced players out there. There's so much to explore and easter egg's to unearth that it keeps you coming back for more even if it isn't that tough.
The great thing is that it won't impede your gf or younger sibling from managing to get into the game and since the game is very appealing to most audiences, I would say it will keep them coming back for more until they figure out how to advance and gain progress in the game. As for the younger sibling, they might even figure out that their controller has been unknowingly disconnected, yet again, during today's play session!

A fun Metroidvania with interesting mechanics and a unusual control scheme. Piloting the sub is fun and interesting, and occasionally frustrating as its mobility isn't always ideal for the problem at hand. However, that makes the game more unique and interesting.

This is a decent game, a cute and well made metroidvania, under the sea! There's an abundance of items and treasures to get and you don't need them all to complete all achievements, which i appreciate. The narration and story is fine, just background noise to me tbh. The visuals are lovely, the gameplay is decent. Overall, I'd say this is worth playing through if you feel that yearning for the sea and have 15 bucks to spare.

Пробираясь через заросли водорослей, обломки кораблей и развалины древней цивилизации, Меррин узнает скрытые тайны и подробности конфликта подводных народов. Она встретится с одной из последних русалок, с милым крабом торговцем и даже маленьким левиафанчиком, который ей очень поможет. Наша подлодка отправляется в приключение с простым крюком-захватом, а закончим мы, как и положено в метроидваниях, обвешанными бронёй, торпедами, эхолотом и другими гаджетами. Впрочем, и простой захват способен на многое. Он нужен нам для сбора предметов, чтобы отбиваться от врагов или для того, чтобы зацепиться за что-нибудь важное, например, рычаг. Со временем, сила удара и радиус действия у захвата увеличиваются, но его, конечно же, недостаточно для того, чтобы исследовать все закоулки этого немаленького подводного мира. Кроме того, мир игры наполнен тайнами и секретами. Тайников очень много и обшаривать уже пройденные места, после того как получил очередную способность очень интересно. Загадок не так много, но они заставляют, иногда, крепко подумать. Во время прохождения, у героини появляется возможность выбраться из подлодки и лично обшарить некоторые тайники. Надо понимать, что Меррин гораздо более хрупкое создание, чем лодка, поэтому играть ей надо аккуратней.

Подводное царство достаточно разнообразно. Мы побываем и среди подводных лесов с маленькими рыбками и черепахами, и в самых глубинах, среди костей древних существ, и в подводном техногенном городе. Везде кто-то плавает, что-то булькает или колышется. Атмосфера подводного города и его окрестностей передана замечательно. Единственное, Song of the Deep – та из немногих игр, где трейлер и картинки на странице магазина выглядят лучше, чем сама игра, по началу это огорчает, особенно мутноватые передние планы, но потом привыкаешь. Музыка очень приятная и атмосферная, мне очень понравилась, а вот голос главной героини огорчил, мне он показался слишком глухим и невнятным.
По итогу получаем качественную метроидванию в оригинальной стилистике. Русского языка в игре нет, но народные умельцы сделали очень качественный перевод. Игра не сложная, 100% достижений выбиваются без проблем, так что очень рекомендую попробовать.
Com uma historia envolvente e jogabilidade simples, Song of the Deep é aquele tipo de jogo que jogamos para descontrair e relaxar. Os gráficos são muito bonitos e a jogabilidade excelente. Recomendo para aquelas pessoas que só estão querendo se divertir um pouco sem muita complexidade.

I recently developed a passion for Metroidvania games, and Song of the Deep is one of those gems you must play if you are a fan of the genre as well. I can tell Insomniac made this game with so much love; it reflects on the story and the characters. Given that the game fully takes place underwater, you are treated to some amazing visuals, and the gameplay is smooth and engaging. My only problem with the game is the puzzles, as in some areas, they can get too complicated, slowing down progression and perhaps putting you in a spot where you'd have to rely on YouTube to solve them as I did. Overall, this is a beautiful game and I'd highly recommend it.
And yes, for those wondering, the game works beautifully on the Steam Deck too.
It's a competently executed metroidvania with art that, to me, screams 2010s indie game. It won't impress you with new mechanical or narrative concepts, but it's a pretty causal play that didn't leave me disappointed.

There were parts that are kinda boring but it was quickly overturned with another story piece tying the game together very nicely. This game has a special place in my heart.

"Song of the Deep" is a (mostly) 3D rendered 2D side view Metroidvania with a simple twist, it's less of a platformer and more of a 2D "swimming" game where you propel a cartoony submarine through an illustrated underwater world in search of your father, who is a pretty irresponsible parent if he leaves it to his young daughter to go submarining alone.
I think to sum this up, one of the other reviewers for this game aptly put it that this is a AAA studio making an indie game... I think that comment really hits the nail on the head here. This is an "okay" game but it's also far from being great. It works, it has all the elements that a game should have, but it also doesn't spark joy.
Usually I'll point out technical defects which can turn gamers away... I will say the hand drawn illustration components aren't great, they're really the same tier as one of those childrens books illustrated by the author, who, clearly, is writing books for a living because they're not a great illustrator. This gives the game a charming veneer but this isn't backed up by the substance of the game. Really, this is an acceptably polished and produced game. If only that was all a game needed.
The submarine gameplay is shallow, plodding, and uninteresting. The game should be battling to grasp the gamers attention and instead I found it putting me to sleep. It's just not fun, it lacks that je ne sais quoi that really successful games have.
It's clearly designed for consoles and was ported from PS4 and Xbone. This console centric design makes this inferior to PC native games, and that's an understandable deterrent for any gamer.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
"Song of the Deep" has the ridiculous price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Ultimately, this bizarre and aggressive pricing for such an underwhelming game makes it impossible to recommend.
For comparison, the $20 asking price for this game could get you games like "Factorio", "Satisfactory" or "The Outer Wilds". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Unfortunately Steam reviewers aren't presented with a "Maybe" option... if they did, that's what I'd choose. This isn't a completely bad game, but it's also not one of the best. As always, if you read my review and you can overlook the negatives I've called out, or they just aren't important to you, then by all means go ahead and buy this.
One of my favorite games that I've ever played. It's beautifully drawn, has fun exploration and combat, excellent music, and has a great story. Most of the negative reviews are from people with thousands of hours in fps games, who's brains are so fried from constant stimulation they can't enjoy a story focused game. Another common complaint is that the controls suck, but that's just because the game takes place underwater. The controls look and feel great, and are consistent, if you have problems with them, its genuinely a skill issue. I played it first on my xbox one when it first came out, and it still holds up, almost nine years later.
Ça faisait longtemps que Song of the Deep traînait dans ma bibliothèque Steam, longtemps qu'il me faisait de l'œil… mais pas trop non plus. Oui, car autant le dire de suite, si j'ai eu envie de lancer Song of the Deep, ce n'était pas pour son genre, le metroidvania, et encore moins pour sa direction artistique, qui ne m'emballait pas des masses, mais pour le développeur qui se trouve derrière : Insomniac Games.
Les appréciant, je m'attendais à retrouver leur patte derrière, ce petit truc qu'ils auraient pu apporter au genre du jeu dont il est question. De surcroit, Song of the Deep étant sorti en 2016, il s'est positionné à une époque où le développeur a lancé de nombreux projets différents, principalement des nouvelles licences (loin de leur marvelisation actuelle)… bref, j'étais intrigué, curieux de voir ce que les développeurs avaient à proposer pour un genre de jeu auquel il n'avait pas touché jusqu'à présent.
Malheureusement, je crois que j'aurai dû faire fi du développeur derrière et me cantonner à mes premières impressions, car Song of the Deep, sans être mauvais, m'a quand même plutôt déçu, mais surtout, m'a donné l'impression de jouer à un metroidvania générique, loin de représenter ce que le studio est capable de faire en termes d’originalité.
Prenons le côté metroidvania justement. Pour le coup, le titre est loin d'apporter quoi que ce soit au genre. La progression est banale, sans grande surprise, et sans aucun génie, au niveau du world design notamment. On ne retrouve pas cette surprise qu'on peut retrouver face à d'autres jeux du genre, quand on débloque une capacité qui remet complètement en question notre manière de nous mouvoir dans ce monde ou de combattre les ennemis. On comprend très vite que cet obstacle X va pouvoir être détruit avec le gadget X qu'on obtiendra plus tard, la fonction de chaque arme et gadget. Pas de surprise donc, les développeurs ayant préféré quelque chose de très balisé, un jeu plus linéaire qu'on ne pourrait le croire, et avec en prime la présence d'un marchand qui nous indique quelle amélioration fait quoi, histoire qu'aucun joueur ne soit perdu, qu'on soit le moins surpris du monde par le gameplay. Toujours dans l'optique de supprimer toute surprise, les développeurs sont allés jusqu'à indiquer l'emplacement des collectibles les plus importants sur la carte.
De surcroit, en plus de proposer quelque chose de bien trop linéaire pour le genre, d'éviter toute surprise, le titre finit très vite par perdre le peu de folie qu'il avait, n'arrivant pas à se renouveler. Cela concerne le gameplay, avec ses trois types de torpilles à débloquer (faille, magma et glace), qui s'utilisent de la même manière : ce n'est pas non plus raté, le jeu offrant quelques combinaisons sympas à ce niveau-là, mais ça reste très pauvre niveau armement quand on sait qu'il y a les gars de Ratchet & Clank derrière, et ça l'est encore plus quand on s'aperçoit qu'on peut facilement se sortir de la plupart des situations juste en bourrinant, sans exploiter le gameplay. Mais ce manque de renouvellement concerne aussi la variété des situations qui nous sont proposées, outre le fait de pouvoir clore les combats en bourrinant comme tout juste évoqué, les énigmes que le titre possèdent sont tout simplement ennuyantes en plus de ne pas être difficiles pour un sou. Je pense que l'exemple le plus représentatif en termes de non-renouvellement est le boss de fin principal : il s'agit juste d'une succession de vagues d'ennemis qu'on élimine sans difficulté et qu'on a déjà éliminé par le passé.
Ça m'a pris moins de 10 heures pour terminer le jeu à 100 % et débloquer l'intégralité des succès en mode difficile, et pourtant, j'ai eu l'impression de très vite refaire la même chose, l'ennui suivant très vite. Par chance, il n'est pas nécessaire de récupérer l'intégralité des collectibles de la carte afin d'obtenir le 100 %… très franchement, je ne sais pas si j'aurais eu le courage d'aller jusque-là.
À noter que, bien qu'il soit possible de jouer au clavier/souris, il n'est pas possible de remapper les touches de son clavier. Inutile donc de vous dire qu'il est préférable de jouer avec un pad. Par contre, le changement de munitions se faisant avec le stick droit, et le jeu gérant très mal le seuil de la zone morte du stick en question, vous risquez de vite péter un câble si votre manette a un peu d'âge.
Curieusement, c'est quand on s'éloigne du gameplay qu'on finit par trouver le plus grand nombre de qualités à ce Song of the Deep, sans être pléthorique pour autant. Déjà, autant je ne trouve pas la direction artistique très inspirée, autant ce n'est pas non plus laid, et les animations restent réussies. En fait, je trouve cette même direction artistique bien plus inspirée quand on se réfère au côté conte du jeu, les développeurs nous narrant les recherches de Merryn, en quête de retrouver son père perdu au fond de l'océan. Ce n'est pas une histoire très recherchée non plus, mais le pari du conte est réussi, avec toute une direction artistique renvoyant à ce même genre littéraire, tout en s'inspirant de la mythologie celtique irlandaise. Vous l'avez compris : on a l'impression que deux directions artistiques différentes se côtoient tout du long. Pour l'anecdote, le jeu a été inspiré par la fille de Brian Hastings, le scénariste du titre, alors âgée de 10 ans : le but étant de créer pour elle un personnage féminin courageux et ingénieux. Le pari est réussi à ce niveau-là, Insomniac ayant de toute façon toujours réussi à concevoir des personnages originaux. Au moins l'intention est là… quoique certains risquent de trouver cela bien trop « woke ».
Mis à part Brian Hastings, difficile de savoir qui d'autre a bossé sur le jeu. Jonathan Wandag s'est occupé de la BO, mais celle-ci ne se révèle pas marquante. Sur le Wikipédia anglophone, d'après une source qui est désormais inaccessible (ça nous arrange bien), on peut apprendre que 15 personnes de chez Insomniac ont bossé sur Song of the Deep. On peut aussi y lire que, selon Hastings, avec une équipe plus petite, les développeurs sont souvent forcés de sortir de leur zone de confort. Pour le coup, j'aurais aimé que sortir de sa zone de confort ne se traduise pas par une nouvelle IP sans trop de créativité.
Sans être mauvais, j'aurais quand même beaucoup de mal à conseiller un titre comme Song of the Deep tant il se révèle banal, éloigné de la patte Insomniac (finalement, je crois que seuls les piranhas font un peu Insomniac dans leur design). L'intention était là pourtant, mais l'exécution non. Et pour le coup, difficile de recommander un jeu sur la seule intention de ses développeurs.
Song of the Deep reminds me more of Aquaria than Pronty or Depths of Sanity in that it plays quite slowly and narrated. Like Aquaria, it doesn't manage to keep my interest.

Fantastic metroidvania, one of the best i have played.
Combat can be a bit tedious but other then that super satsifying to explore and solve puzzles. Controlling under water feels a bit off but since the tasks requiered allow you a big margin of error, moving feels very fine despite feeling a bit off at first.

playtime is messed up. i saw 68 mins, i also saw 770 hours (!) so im somewhere between that.
i dont really recommend this game but i also don't not recommend it. its not a mind blowing or life changing experience. a triple a studio for some reason made an indie game. the credits are like 3400 people but it seems as though it was probably a group or about 10 or 15 people.
this game regularly feels pretty good and satisfying to play and explore, and just as regularly feels boring and frustrating. combat is janky and never gets much better than that. explosions are weak. the game is underwater, so everything is floaty and sluggish. but sometimes its passable. it's not BAD by any stretch which is why i dont really feel like giving it a thumbs down, but at the same time its plain crackers and unbuttered bread. this game would be fine for some low stress babies first game, but it has awkward, sometimes frustrating combat, and a good handful of bugs. the game generally lacks polish. but as i said, it never really veers off the cliff into terrible. its... passable. it's always passable and sometimes alright.
as i was writing this, i changed my choice from recommended to not recommended.
if you have it in your library then give it a go, but i dont think its worth spending £10 on when you can drink some room temp water and taste the roof of your mouth for the same experience.

A very engaging and thrilling underwater adventure full of suspense and surprises. Challenging yet fun. i thoroughly enjoyed playing this game.
1. texture's are buggy at times, combat is little bit repetitive and annoying, and the puzzles are harsh brutal. so 100%(ing) isn't exactly easy. the story was simple, but nice and the art is really beautiful.
2. if your going to look up solutions; do so, but don't use you-tube for collections(aka: clams), because theirs no video that can show u.
3. (Spoilers): the first boss was really tricky to figure out, then the other 2 bosses(including the final boss) aren't even really bosses just battle arenas.

Bought this game a few years ago and hadn't played it since, so I decided to try it again. I locked my own progression by doing one of the core mechanics of a metroidvania, exploring. I went down a path that was open but clearly not intended and when I tried to return to the objective, I was blocked in every way.
This game is very pretty, has good sound design and a lovely soundtrack. But the simple fact that you are able to break it within 2 hours and force yourself to start a new save file to fix it is inexcusable.

This game is absolutely gorgeous. Worth getting it and I recommend other people to play it as well, like really recommend. Its story is also beautiful. I love the idea of upgrading the submarine and exploring around the map. So yes, plaaay it!

SHORT:
Chill vibing to 2D aquarium screensaver as an underwater maze, explored via zippy fantasy submarine, but play with analog stick gamepad because the controls and some puzzles can be finicky. Game can really use a minimap; expect to pause a lot to get your bearings or end up in side dead ends and doing unnecessary backtracking. Timewise, short playthrough even if you chase down all achievements, but it did feel slow/long at times from the environments being hard to learn and navigate without stopping to check the pause map.
LONG:
Controls much better with analog stick gamepad vs. keyboard+mouse, but 2D physics (gravity, momentum) combined with aiming and movement controls can be patience-challenging at times with how many puzzles are laid out.
The main pleasure of the game may be the vibes of piloting a fantasy submarine through 2D environments reminiscent of aquarium screensavers, paced out via a maze-like layout with areas and paths closed off until matching gear is located and applied to various challenges and puzzles that serve as area/path gates.
Normally, navigating, or learning routes from A to B, in games like this ("Metroidvanias") is also a positive feature, but something about this game resists that. It may be the combination of the submarine freedom of movement, the general layout of the map, and the aquarium-like graphics that are pretty to look at but are short on visual markers or hints to zone transitions. The game could have used a live minimap to assist in matching the wider map to the immediate environment. Expect to switch back and forth between the pause map and piloting the sub. Frequently. As a consolation, movement is breezy enough and most zones are mostly nice to look at, so meandering isn't totally annoying.
SIMILAR GAMES I STRONGLY RECOMMEND:
I've had this game in my library for a few years, I finally tried it now after craving another sea exploration game, after playing Dave the Diver in October 2023 and my 2nd/3rd playthrough of Subnautica. There's also Aquaria I almost finished years ago and is probably due to be replayed (and finished) soon. I've also gotten lost in the lore and never finished Sunless Sea, but I did recently finish Dredge.
A very enjoyable metroidvania, jam packed with content, with a major focus on exploration. Minor bugs and glitches present, sometimes the character can get stuck, you would have to wiggle her out of a corner, other times collectibles and enemies can get stuck, need to restart from a checkpoint. Overall I'm satisfied.

Задумка была хорошей, но общий темп игры, скучные враги, ничем не примечательный саундтрек, очень нудные душные загадки по управлению глубинными бомбами все испортили. Можно поиграть, когда уже совсем больше не во что, но игра после прохождения оставляет только чувство радости, что наконец-то она закончилась. Booooring.
Миленькая несложная (привет, финальный босс) метроидвания с плаксивым сюжетом о сильной женщине на подводной лодке. Бесячая озвучка от тётки, читающей за автора. Вся такая пшш-пшш-пшш... Бррррр...
I guess you call this a platswimmer. No too bad if you are in to this sort of thing. I got bored with it, but I can see the things people would like. Nice music, good graphics, very nice level atmosphere. Game play is super smooth.
I beat this game in about 18.5 hours. I wish I would have known I was approaching the final boss battle, and could not go back to collect all the remaining treasures and items. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed it!

I recommend this 2D game for girls every where. Guys can play it but it’s one adventure of a brave daughter building a submarine from scratch and riding under the sea to find and hopefully save her sailing father that never returned. She encounters both beautiful friendly creatures and monstrous small and large creatures that she must battle.
She gets the opportunity to upgrade her ship all throughout the game with coins collected during gameplay.
A narrator tells the story in the background that gives you an idea of what you are supposed to be doing next.
You’ll never get lost because the map show every where you have traveled and it even has vortexes to travel instantly to distant areas.
It will be satisfying when you beat the final boss and watch the video of how your story ends.

Empezando por lo evidente, no tiene plataformeo porque vas en un submarino... lo cual implica que mecánicamente es como si estuvieras volando desde el inicio. Esto no hace que el juego tenga menos obstáculos que otros del género, pero es un punto a destacar si nunca has jugado uno de este estilo.
La historia es simple pero tierna, y las imágenes con las que se cuenta, recuerdan a uno de esos libros gordos de cuentos con ilustraciones en acuarela. La abrazadora voz de la narradora le da un aura de encanto, que te acompaña durante toda la aventura.
El combate es bastante simple y creo que la premisa de ir en un submarino se podría haber aprovechado mejor. Sin embargo el juego no pretende estar basado en el combate, aunque me ha quedado la sensación de que podría haber sido un poco mejor. Se suelen repetir varias situaciones de encerronas, sobretodo al final del juego, y eso no me ha gustado mucho la verdad, porque al inicio del juego se ve que hay mas variedad en el combate que al final.
Por contrapartida, creo que se abusa un poco en la cantidad de puzzles que en cierto momento se sienten innecesarios. Igualmente hay buena variedad de tipos de puzzle y eso le da aire fresco cada tanto.
El recorrido por el mapa está muy bien llevado, te dan libertad como para que sientas que te metes en un lugar que no debes, o como para que des con el lugar al que tendrías que ir un poco antes de tiempo. La exploración no es sobresaliente pero suele recompensar en vida, energía o alguna mejoras que no son obligatorias. Creo que la premisa de estar debajo del mar se podría haber aprovechado mejor con el tema de la presión del agua, o el frío de estar mas abajo, o el calor de estar cerca de alguna grieta volcánica. El tema de las corrientes marinas y la interacción con la fauna es algo que está muy bien aprovechado y es único de este juego. En definitiva, es un muy buen recorrido, los backtrackings bien implementados y la exploración interesante.
Es un muy buen juego si quieres jugar un metroidvania que no se parezca a los clásicos, con un espíritu relajante y fantástico.

A positive rating for the beautiful intro alone. This is an aciton platformer in disguise really. :) Clever that is. The narration lulls you to sleep and its tight story entices you. And Hey look coins! Also you are attacked by the cuteness of adorable waving merchant crabs!

Casual metroidvania, though some puzzles are challening. Only two things it lacked were an option to control with WASD, and configuring key bindings. If you like underwater themed games and metroivania, grab this from sale.

You will not spend 40 hours on this game, and you probably won't ever replay it, but I think for its price 8-12 hours to 100% is a solid and engaging weekend pleasure.
Unfortunately, [i]Song of the Deep[/i] does suffer from some annoying downsides. The game has very few enemies, most of which are simple colored re-skins of previous ones. This isn't too much of a problem, only the enemies [i]scale[/i] in power relative to your progression through the story. This gets annoying as upgrades to your weapons feel more like treading water than truly growing in power.
The controls make sense and feel good...most of the time. In several sections the floaty, underwater controls demand you to make precision dodges and motions the game's own design doesn't really give you the control to do. The game balances this by being incredibly fair about checkpoints at least.
For the price I think it's an enjoyable weekend game, but you wouldn't be missing anything waiting for a sale.
game bugged out near the beginning and locked me in a puzzle that i couldn't get out of. Brother who got past it confirmed it was a bug and i was stuck. Also, its kind of boring/slow.
some housekeeping before I share some thoughts about this game: It only took me 9hrs 26mins (in-game timer) to complete it fully with all cheevos, and 100% in-game completion, not the inflated 12hrs Steam claims. And 2, I played this game on Advanced (hardest difficulty) and I recommend everyone play it that way as well, it adds the perfect amount of challenge and makes exploration more worthwhile. now onto some thoughts, thanks for reading!

- The storytelling was great, and coupling it with the wonderful storybook artwork made it feel like a tale being told by a warm fire. The story is whimsical, but mature, and it's told by a narrator with a lovely voice that makes it all just feel complete. I always enjoyed moving further through the game cuz I knew there was something good waiting!
- I enjoyed all the different upgrades I unlocked for my ship that made exploration and combat easier. Adding upgrades to my fin made me move A LOT faster, and upgrading my rockets let me shoot dual blasters at the baddies. The upgrades are fun, and generally helpful throughout your journey (especially if you play on Advanced difficulty!)
- Puzzle solving and exploration were fun, and so varied that I never knew what to expect. Most Metroidvanias have a pretty standard way they approach unlocking powers and then letting you go back and grab goodies, and this game is no different, but the exploration aspect is definitely fresh. Not all treasures are alike. Sometimes you gotta fight enemies to get something, or use sonar to find a hidden chest, and other times use a magma bomb to pull a giant stone statue down to get the treasure behind it, and there's even more! I appreciated all the different ways to get the treasures!
- Puzzle solving is neat in that you use your sub to solve some puzzles and others you leave the sub, and sometimes you even use both at once. I enjoyed getting to tackle each puzzle, and the best part was they weren't unnecessarily complicated which added to the joy of solving them.
- The gameplay is unique in that you pilot a sub to get around the world for the most part and I loved just jettin around in my little sub at full speed through all the beautiful environments trying to shoot past powerful streams of water or through doors I had moments to rush past. What's awesome is being able to leave the sub and do some exploration with the main character that gave a ton of extra freedom and variety to the game.

- nothing serious honestly, just some small issues wit collision detection and the hook you use not always being accurate, but overall the game didn't present too many unpleasant moments.

- if you come across a treasure location and you don't think the sub can do it, try exiting and looking around!
- when you come across a Tyne Pool (the game's save spots) make sure to get as close as possible for the game to save your progress cuz if you're too far it won't register!

I had a blast playing through Song of the Deep and there were a ton of moments of fun and excitement at solving a puzzle or finding a well hidden treasure! I recommend this game 100% to everyone, especially if you're looking for a Metroidvania set in a unique setting with a worthwhile story, upgrades, and exploration!
decent, but boring side scrolling adventure. the story is good and the animations are nice, but the gameplay is really simple, slow paced, and usually boring. the bosses are also more like puzzles than action.
with insomniac's name attached to the game, i expected something action-heavy like ratchet and clank or spiderman and i was let down. but, come in with tempered expectations, and it's a decent game to pass the time.
It's huge, versatile, definately not boring, there's so much to search for and discover, the submarine is nimble and obeys to the point, when you have it fully equipped it's all the more fun. It has a great atmosphere and also a coherent story. It's animated and designed in a great way, the developers really invested a lot of time and effort here.
I couldn't get along with the keyboard, imho the game is best suited for the controller. A very nice and varied platform game, I like to play it despite some frustrating moments.
A few times could not continue because I did not understand/see what exactly to do, or took the wrong path and was in the wrong area. The map shows where to go, but not necessarily how to get there, or what specific prerequisites/tools to have with you. This was a bit frustrating, especially since I didn't notice any real help for this in the game. Now and then a hint if you want it (i.e. in the exchange of treasures at the merchant) would be useful.
I'm not done with the game yet, it's getting more and more what is still to loot and I'm afraid the upcoming end boss fights will not be easy.
I got this game ages ago and finally got around to it. An adorable little Metroidvania, with lots of hidden things to find amidst beautiful artwork and music. Combat can feel intrusive on this exploration, but I found I got used to it. Story is simple, generic even-but I found it heartwarming enough given the style and attitude the creators were going for.
It is definitely made for controller, but I adjusted fine with K/M personally.
Easy to 100%; probably best to get on a sale. Not the best such game in the genre, but I had a good time with it, nonetheless.
A pretty good metroidvania that is very relaxing to play thanks to it's gorgeous visuals and outstanding soundtrack. The gameplay is a bit clunky at times and some collectibles are quite the hassle to get but the overal experience is enjoyable due to good level design and a big map to explore. The 'metroidvania upgrades' are creative and unique, utilizing the submarine and diver to navigate the ocean floor. I wish i could say the same for combat which is lacking but it's a pretty casual game so it's fine honestly. Story is pretty standard fairytale-like but fits the game well, with great narration and beautiful handdrawn cutscenes. The game is of a high enough quality and has enough to do to warrant the price (since it rarely goes on discount). I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing or casual sidescrolling adventure. 7/10

Song of the Deep is a beautiful, immersive, under sea adventure. The music is wonderful, the art is fantastic and the game play is fun and challenging enough to enjoy yourself but not get too frustrated.

Cute and quaint metroidvania that oozes tons of charm. Still worthwhile for the brief ride (8-10 hours), though it definitely has a couple rough spots that aren't quite well-designed (like not enough checkpoints in some spots, getting stuck on things) and isn't exactly the most inspired in terms of gameplay (enemies aren't too hard to take care of and do get a bit repetitive). But hot-damn if it isn't a beautiful game and it doesn't overstay it's lovely welcome.
