Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is a first person horror game in which you must solve puzzles to reach the end and find all the answers.
Rhiannon is hearing noises and seeing things she can't explain. Living in her family's remote farmstead miles from friends and neighbours and having ambitious, busy parents, Rhiannon is alone. Her parents believe her stories to be an overactive imagination and teenage angst. So the Sullivan’s decide to take their daughter away for a break and have asked you to look after their home.

Glitches a lot - soft locked once, and an item I needed disappeared, and also got locked out of the map. The puzzles are tedious and difficult to solve. It requires you walking around to rooms you've been in 15 times before to click on a thing only to see if a very subtle thing has changed. Couldn't finish it.

Well I have mixed feelings about this game after finishing it. It has a pretty good story and it's compelling and interesting enough to keep playing it, but gameplay wise it's rough around the edges. The puzzles are very cryptic for the most part, and confusing, since sometimes the most obvious way it's not the correct way to solve things. And the "notepad" it has to keep track of tasks, sometimes adds to the confusion more than helping. The navigation controls and the way to interact with the inventory are not the best either. But that being said, it also has some pretty unique features and atmosphere that makes it for a good experience. So if you truly love adventure games, and you're up to a real challenge and to struggle with it's defects then you have a fairly decent horror adventure game to play. But I wouldn't recommend it to new players getting into the adventure game genre though cause it's very tough (I had to use a guide a few times to get myself unstuck of pretty crappy parts). So I guess in the end it all depends on the amount of patience and experience you have, and the amount of time you're willing to put into this game.
"Rhiannon: Curse of the Four branches" is a mysterious quest which has an interesting and plotting story line fulfilled by joyful soundtrack and puzzles. If you are seeking for something paranormal and challenging - you are in the right place.

I played this game a few years ago. It has a really good story line. The spirits are not too scary and the game keeps you hooked all the way through. I love this game and will play it again.

Rather than a video game I consider it a work of art. It perfectly recreates the feeling of a glorious niche genre, with all its strengths and weaknesses (the movement system is as awkward as it was in those old games, and some puzzles are not very logical).
The story, even if it is not very credible, is integrated with cultural themes (medieval Welsh mythology) that pushed me to delve deeper.

Graphics is ok but simple. Story not too good and there is lots reading in this game. Not really HOG game to me and I did not like it.
[h1]A spooky point-and-click adventure puzzle-solving game.
I'm pretty proud of myself getting through Chapter 1 on my own. Minus figuring out what the stupid computer password was, since there's literally so many words you encounter and nothing that actually hints to where you should be looking.
From Chapter 2 on I basically relied on a walkthrough/guide which kind of took the fun out of it, especially since the game runs in like 1200x800 resolution so going back and forth was annoying.
But my biggest gripe with this game is that you don't keep items when you first encounter them. You need to trigger something in-game THEN have to go all the way back and research EVERYTHING to pick up/keep an item needed for your "current" quest. So there's a lot of memorizing involved.
Also so much reading, like WHY is there SO MUCH F*CKING TEXT TO READ!
Guess I'm just to Low-IQ for this stuff.
Nevertheless the game is pretty interesting, and if you like puzzle mystery solving games, check it out!

Arberth Studio, The Story is the Game. So the software house claims, but I add, maybe is not enough. Well, I really can't judge negatively the game; I enjoyed because I like this kind of games with static screens, just like Darkling Room hidden jewels (Barrow Hill, etc...) but the atmosphere is different.
Neutral review? Maybe. But at the same time, you perceive this is a game built with love, historical and folklorical research and cheap means.
Despite the lack of musics, many naives passages, you can't be severe with this game.
One point I didn't like absolutely was the "notes" icon: I didn't realize that it is an hint tool, so I freely used throughout the 80% of the game, every time a new action was revealed by the game. Even if some hint is not completely unveiled, I realized towards the end of the game that some research (that I love it) was spoiled to me before I get some try (for instance, the code for the safe). Umph!

Recommended if you like point and click mysteries where you might have to take notes or do some digging to figure out some of the solutions. I don't mind that at all so I really enjoyed it.

В общем психика Рианон не справляется и вашей задачей становится её спасение. Британцы из Arberth Studios безусловно вдохновлялись культовой Scratches, но вот только не дожали по всем параметрам. Начнем с того, что игра разработана на Wintermute, что уже подразумевает трудности с интерфейсом и передвижением. Продолжим тем, что порою напрочь отсутствует логика в действиях, как в квестах старой школы, причём сам геймплей выполнен в стиле поиска предметов. В итоге часть вещей активна, но вы не можете их взять при этом в инвентаре может находиться свыше 30 вещей и непонятно для чего они там нужны. Ну и главная проблема - слабоватая атмосфера, скримеры конечно дело хорошее, но духом валлийского эпоса не пропитываешься от слова совсем. Вроде в первой главе появляется колоритный злодей, но в последующем мы увидим его только в концовке. Я даже имя его в процессе забыл. Поставлю 6.0 но не рекомендую к прохождению.
Управление настолько сильно устарело, что уже просто невозможно играть в это в 2022 году. Кто смелый, может попробовать превозмочь на свой страх и риск, я не смогла, хотя хотела.
Super dark graphics and had a very hard time seeing any detail or interactable areas - even after adjusting my monitor settings. Additionally made my computer run too hot and was glitchy with my graphics card. It was starting to seem like an interesting story but I don't think I will continue.
i love mysterious games
I hate to give this a thumbs down, because the aesthetic and feel of the game are cool. Very 90s if you liked that era of gaming. However, the gameplay itself is tedious. The puzzles presented aren't even really difficult, but they might feel difficult or take up a lot of time because they're all dependent on knowing when and where to pick up objects found around the game. I used a walkthrough for several portions because it wasn't even like I couldn't "figure it out," it was just too annoying keeping track of a bunch of items I had seen several times but wasn't able to pick up until that one specific moment. It only made me more scatterbrained and confused when I was confronted with new information. I could see this being cool to watch someone else play, but playing it myself ended up being a little grating.
The story is really nice, the way they put it together is horrible. It's not scary. It might have been a great book though. The area is great, not so big so you don't get lost. I like the cultural things. The gameplay isn't good. 99% of the items are already there, you need to figure out which one to take. The map system is according to the interactions you find, not the actual location. Luckily you have a notebook but it doesn't always cross the tasks you complete. Graphics are calling for the 90's. I like the game is retro point and click adventure but that's pretty much it.
Nice story. Oldfashioned gameplay where your environment consists of photographs but it has a very nice atmosphere. Quests and puzzles are not straight forward (although per chapter it becomes quickly clear what you'll have to do and thus it becomes a bit repetitive). Loved the whole game though and it was quite a relaxing "walk in the park".

“Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches” is a traditional point-and-click adventure that I found myself enjoying quite a bit. It’s use of a contemporary setting grounds it a bit in reality despite being a supernatural story.
Usually these types of games require finding and using/combining objects that don’t always seem to be the most effective things, however, I liked how this game justified it by using the items as symbols to represent the connected items to the overall story.
The story itself is pretty interesting, though not unique. I thought it was fleshed out pretty well and the various documents and environmental clues helped to keep ones interest.
The controls are a little clunky, however, especially with moving around. In some areas, you have to go through some extra clicks in order to access an item or area that’s clearly accessible from where the character stands.
The inventory could have been better designed, at least in regards to navigating through it. Moving left and right through the inventory bar is slow and is made more frustrating when there are a ton of items. In my opinion, it would’ve been better to have the inventory as a drop-down box instead of the bar at the top of the screen.
The music is reserved only for story scenes, but what is available is well-made. It has a haunting quality which fits well with the supernatural theme of the game.
One little bit of advice: the Space bar skips the opening animations. I was so frustrated at having to wait about a minute every time I started the game in order to start playing. The usual use of ESC, Enter, or clicking the mouse doesn’t advance the opening animations, but the Space bar does! This is not indicated until the ending credits, however…
Overall, I enjoyed this game and recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of traditional point-and-click adventure games.
I love exploring haunted houses first person point-and-click style and Rhiannon totally delivers in this department. The house and its surroudings are beatifully rendered and are a delight to explore. I don't know why this particular style of pre-rendered graphics with its low-res textures and occasional animations makes me happy, but it does. The interface looks rough though, and the inventory is annoying to use. But! The in-game map looks great, beatifully drawn. The devs had little resources but they put them in the right places. Gameplay is great. I used a walkthrough a couple of times, but in hindsight I didn't have to. I'm pretty sure I could've done it myself would I be a bit more patient and observant. Another thing I liked about this game is that you get to do a lot of things that you rarely do in games, like feeding a cat, baking a bread, identifying tree branches by their leaves, making kirlian photographs, and recording sounds of the environment. Also you defeat an ancient wizard, but you can do that in pretty much any fantasy game. Flushing a dead mouse down the toilet on the other hand... I bet you could count the games that let you do that on the fingers of one hand. This is a great game made by a small passionate team and their passion shines through.
one of the most atrocious HOGs i have ever played. i gave up after trying for one hour. yes it is from 2008 but it just feel like it is even older. the navigation... OMG! also not having a clue on what to do or what you are looking for it a killer. i have progressed quite a bit in it but the navigation just want me want to vomit.

J'aime les myst-like, donc je partais en territoire conquis, je voulais aimer ce jeu.
PAs qu'il soit mauvais, le jeu est même bon sur certains aspects,mais il est complètement à la ramasse sur d'autres.
- le bien: l'histoire, le lieu, l'ambiance
- le moins bien: des énigmes de plus en plus wtf à mesure que le jeu avance, le coté fourre tout de certains composants de l'histoire (comme dit avant l'histoire est bonne mais les créateurs sont dans l'indigestion d'idée par moment)
- le pire: le système de ramassage des objets... à savoir, devoir déclencher un trigger (lire une lettre, prendre un objet, passer un événement) pour pouvoir prendre l'objet dont on a besoin. Au début on se dit "cool ça va permettre de ne pas se perdre dans l'immensité des tableaux et des objets"....sauf que très vite cela montre toute sa limite:
chapitre 3, je trouve que l'on doit faire, je sais où sont les 4 objets nécessaires...MAIS 3 d'entre eux sont non ramassables, pourquoi 3 / 4 mystère, tout ça parce que je n'avais pas lu un pauvre document INUTILE qui plus est planqué dans un endroit... et là, à partir de cet instant ce système broie les c*******... la progression se fait plus dans la douleur, à mesure que les énigmes deviennent wtf plus ce système pourri, et on finit par aller voir gamefaqs/walkthrough...
Bien dommage tout ça, mais bon, le jeu est souvent soldé à 0.89 ok mais il faut être conscient de la tare que porte ce jeu.

It's an alright game, taking into consideration its release date. Compared to the newer HOG/PNCs, this one does not hold up well, mainly because of the absolutely horrendous and clunky camera movement controls. There's also the occasional bug where your UI disappears or your items go missing, which can prevent you from progressing the plot.
This game has the most atrocious navigation system one could possibly conceive of. Seriously

Amazing game, really enjoyed it! Combined a bit of Celtic lore with mystery and I'm hooked. I loved it and will probably play it again in the future.
The game is very, very dated and in all the bad ways. And not the charming old-school type, but the "every photoshop filter applied" type. It is basically unplayable unless you want to power through it all (but to what purpose, I am not sure, the intro was just dull). It has bad letterboxed resolution, the intro text overlapped the video text. The tutorial is pathetic, it just dumps everything on you before you are even playing. Controls are a mess, navigation tedious. It's all the bad things a P&C game can do. And apparently this is 2008, I would expect more in 1995, you know, when Myst came out. It's like this game is a student project time-traveled from 20 years ago. May be it's not fair and may be the game is great later, but how is one to get to that point?
Même si je ne suis pas fan des jeux de recherche d'objets et d'énigmes, je dois reconnaître que Rhiannon est prenant car très bien réalisé et jouable avec une petite soluce sous la main qu'on n'utilisera pas si souvent car le fil conducteur est bien conçu. Aspect visuel un peu rebutant au départ (genre jeux des années 80 à la Myst avec progression écran par écran) mais on est vite pris par l'ambiance et on passe des heures à explorer sans voir le temps passer. Je n'avais pas joué à ce jeu en 2008 à sa sortie car je me souviens que le site Jeux Videos lui avait donné une note minable de 8/20, ils ont du se rendre compte que des jeux d'exploration aussi réussit on n'en trouve pas beaucoup puisqu'ils lui attribuent aujourd'hui une note corrigée de 14/20 ce qui correspond mieux à sa valeur.

Once again I find myself in the situation of wanting to give a neutral rating, not being able to do so, and then having to decide whether to recommend it or not. I finally decided against recommending it, for there are some things that bothered me in this game, and that I believe should warrant a bad rating. I'll comment on everything I found worth noting while playing this, and end with a small rant on the thing that bothered me the most xD.
Story: it started quite bad, and didn't improve much, but at least got up to a "meh". The main story is easy enough to understand, but there's a "myth" that's quite difficult to grasp, reminiscent of those old myths full of battles for foolish reasons, and magic with ludicrously specific rules that allow you to do almost anything, but only after you've performed a task that makes no sense whatsoever. This whole game is you, carrying out some nonsensical rituals which require finding a lot of random stuff that while ultimately combine, allowing you to go further. It's standard enough, I came here after playing Dark Fall and Barrow Hill, which follow a similar premise, but those were much more entertaining and well though out and put together. Most of the time, I found myself bored, simply going from one place to the other, trying to remember where that item was that I now needed for some reason. It's pretty chore-y, and not in a good sense. The ending is really anti-climactic, adding to the "meh" feel.
Gameplay: it's fine, not good, not bad. The map is not that big, and you can jump between important locations, making backtracking much much easier. Items that you find but are not needed are not picked (because you still haven't seen that thing which would make picking it reasonable), which is a nice touch, but grows old fast, because you need to remember where everything was so you don't have to go through it all over again once you see something new. Movement is not square (some arrows are diagonal) which makes it a little less standard, and yet doesn't add much, and can even be confusing and bothersome, because you want to get to that specific place, and it's not that easy. But I was still mostly ok with it. One thing I don't get though is optimization: the game made my computer hit 60 C, permanently, which is not much, but enough to make my cooler stay permanently on; it definitely seems unreasonable seeing as it's a static point and click game, with bad graphics (I've played many games like this, and this has never happened).
Visuals and Sound: the graphics are not good by today's standards, and apparently not by 2008's standards either. However, I wasn't bothered by that at all. I was a bit bothered because of how bland it all was. Dark Fall and Barrow Hill have some interesting locations that really caught me by surprise. They were really well done. However, here, I didn't feel that at all. New locations were pretty "meh", and there wasn't much to really appreciate. The soundtrack is good, but really scarce. Most of the game has no music. Additionally, it has some voice over, but it's even scarcer. You mostly just read. And that brings me to another low point: you have to read a lot, which is not a problem for me, since I like that in these kinds of games; but what makes this one fall short is that a lot of what you read is either redundant or irrelevant. At one point in the game you read a bunch of emails that basically tell you the same stuff you've read in a diary, except for the very last email, that has one new thing (and is required to be read to go further). But you have no way of knowing this beforehand, and therefore end up re-reading a lot of stuff you already know. And it's not the best story ever written, as I've previously pointed out, so re-reading it will definitely get you bored stiff.
Bugs: there's a small dialog bug at the start of the game (some lines are spoken over previous lines), but that was all I could find, luckily (I understand some people had other problems, but not me).
And now, for the rant:
Even when taking all of these flaws into account, I was still thinking that it wasn't as bad as to say something like "stay away from this", and I think steam ratings are not that fair, with a lot of people ignoring games with "mixed" reviews. I was going to give it a positive review so not to discourage people and get them to give it a chance. However, one final element got me to change my mind, and it is this: this game praises pseudo-science. I am a scientist, and as such, I feel a certain ethical responsibility to not give a pass to people trying to promote false information. This may sound funny, seeing as I played this game and mentioned other games with supernatural and paranormal elements. Why am I not bothered by those, but was bothered by this one? Because this one includes claims that are exactly the same as pseudo-scientists use in real life, includes mentions to real people promoting these false claims, and actually says "according to scientific evidence...". Thing is, I LOVE supernatural or paranormal stories, even though I don't believe in any such things; I love thinking about "what if" and imagining myself in those situations. I love ghost stories, in games, movies, series, books, you name it. And I don't see a problem with liking any of those things, or using those elements in stories, games, etc. But I do take issue with saying those things are actually real, and especially that "science says so". Without giving out much of the story, I can say that one of the characters is an homeopath, and while researching the house, you find stuff saying that water has memory, that it was "proved by scientists", along with mentions to that one Japanese guy who took pictures of ice crystals and said they were actually influenced by speaking to the water, or even thinking good or bad thoughts. In the game, you use those "properties" to perform the tasks, and it would be totally fine if they didn't include those claims that are actually made by real people to convince others to pay them for treatment that doesn't work beyond the placebo effect. If anyone is interested in knowing more, you can read the wikipedia article on homeopathy, I believe it also includes mentions to this Japanese guy (I don't remember his name), who was confronted by scientists, and performed two experiments suggested by them, proving by himself that he was wrong (and of course, he later ignored the evidence he himself found and went along selling books and praising the stuff he made up). Later on, it was said that scientists today believe that ghosts are actually recordings of previous events replayed in the present, which is total bs. Scientists today don't have any evidence of any paranormal phenomena actually existing outside of the minds of the people who claim they do, and there is an increasing amount of evidence of different kinds of cognitive biases, perceptual illusions, and varying effects of suggestion that explain every single instance of paranormal phenomena reported (most of those phenomena can't be reproduced and amount to anecdotal evidence, but every systematic investigation into recurrent apparitions yielded these revealing results, very interesting for psychologists and neuroscientists, but not so much for "believers" or charlatans). In any case, I would have been ok with this game using those elements if it hadn't gone as far as to saying science supports those claims, and using the same arguments real pseudo-scientists use to get people to fall for their claims. Anyway, end of rant xD.
I'll leave by saying: totally meh game, boring at times, with some potentially problematic claims that go beyond the fictional reality this game is trying to create and could actually induce people to believe in false claims in real life.
Navigation controls are terribly outdated. It's a shame as it seemed promising. I'm a huge point and click fan and have been playing them pretty much nonstop since the early 80's. Getting around the map is just a hassle. It's hard to believe this was released in 2009. The controls would have been tedious in 1999.
I throughly enjoyed it - thank you very much:) The graphics are perfect and the puzzles were challenging. I also really appreciated the map which made navigation so much easier. I definitely recommend it.

I think this is only worth the buy on sale. No matter how much I love adventure point n' clicks and how much patience and tolerance I usually have, in my opinion this game had a great start, an excellent overall setting, but it just failed to deliver. What could have been an astonishing spooky mystery story turned into a hardly believable fantasy novel with zero hand-holding, which all-in-all became boring really fast. You basically just keep running around the grounds, looking for something to have changed since the last time you visited a certain location, and then you're supposed to find something randomly placed there using the "pixel-hunt method". Add to that the horrible camera controls and you're in for a bad time. I honestly once walked back and forth multiple times in the same place just to find the perfect spot where I could click to be able to turn left and interact with some cupboard. And when you finally grind through this process and progress the story towards its conclusion, the ending is also a real let-down.
So if I sum this up... yeah, you're most likely better-off playing something else. And it's a damn shame cause I really wanted to like this.

Byłbym wielce zobowiązany, gdyby developerzy tego "dzieła" zerknęli w kalendarz, kiedy tylko zdecydowali się na stworzenie i wydanie tej gry. Gra wyszła w 2008 roku, a odpalając ją, mam wrażenie przeniesienia się na początek lat 90-dziesiątych. Wszystko tutaj jest brzydkie, szare i nijakie. Począwszy od kwiatków po Walijskie zabudowania i ich wnętrza, wszystko aż kłuje w oczy brzydotą. O ile rozumiem koncept takiej gry przygodowej, bo można zrealizować go tanim kosztem, to brzydota wszystkiego w grze nie jest usprawiedliwiona niczym. Mamy powiedzmy ten rok 2008, wychodzą wtedy takie hiciory jak Dead Space, Tomb Raider: Underworld i wiele innych a zaraz obok nich pojawia się Rhiannon, która ilością pikseli w całej grze miałaby problem o teksturować sam model Lary Croft. Gdybym mógł jeszcze obracać się w tej grze o 360 stopni, to może taką grafikę bym jakoś usprawiedliwił i przebolał, ale na zwykłych statycznych screenach?
Dobra dość już o grafice, grafika to nie wszystko. Tajemnica, jaką nam oferuje gra do rozwiązania wydaje się ciekawa do czasu...Aż was szlag jasny trafi, kiedy kolejny raz traficie w to samo miejsce przeklikując się przez statyczne obrazki, które są dodatkowo często zrobione z tak głupiej perspektywy, że nie wiadomo gdzie kliknąć, aby dojść do celu!!! Ileż to razy obracałem się w jakimś pomieszczeniu, szukając wyjścia do pokoju obok...podobne drzwi...podobne ściany i ciągłe wrażenie zagubienia przez ciągle zmieniające się perspektywy... Owszem po czasie uda się to opanować i zrozumiecie co i jak, tylko będzie to po około godzinnej frustracji. Kiedy już opanujecie nawigację w grze (I tak będzie was nadal irytować) pozostaje tylko zagłębić się w historię tego nawiedzonego domu, a raczej czytać tomy książek o ziołach, drzewach oraz pamiętników, e-maili, i notatek nawiedzonej nastolatki i jej rodziców. Przyjdzie wam grzebać w osobistych rzeczach domowników oraz rozwiązywać frustrujące zagadki rodem z lat...tak zgadliście początku 90-dziesiątych.
Tak mnie to zastanowiło, że poszukałem w internecie czy to aby nie jakiś remake albo remaster gry z tych lat, bo aż trudno mi uwierzyć, że ktoś popełnił to "dzieło" w 2008r. Okazuje się, że nie, a gra faktycznie pierwszy raz ujrzała światło dzienne w 2008r. i nie jest żadnym re-. Znalazłem za to informację, że studio, które oryginalnie stworzyło tę grę, nazywało się Lighthouse Interactive i zbankrutowało w 2009 roku. Chyba wiem czemu:)

К сожалению, к настоящему моменту устаревший по всем параметрам point'n'click хоррор-квест от первого лица, со скудной картинкой даже для времени своего выхода, совершенно не умеющий пугать. Нет, если вам 5 лет и при слове "бабайка" вы пачкаете свои короткие штанишки на лямках, у вас, возможно, даже есть шанс попасть в книгу рекордов Гиннесса в качестве самой юной жертвы инфаркта от здешних "ужасов" в духе детсадовских утренников, но закаленным в паранормальных боях ветеранам пачкать исподнее решительно нечем.
Кроме того, авторы не всегда логичны и слишком буквально понимают идиому "на все четыре стороны", благодаря чему с местной солдафонской системой ориентирования в пространстве "напра-во", "наале-во" и "крууугом раз-два" заблудиться можно буквально в чистом поле, а здешним музыкой можно пытать. Как квест - нормально, как хоррор - никак. Для любителей ретро, солдат и детей дошкольного возраста.
UPDATE: ... плохо дело, мне все это начинает нравиться! Я либо старею, либо впадаю в детство, либо становлюсь военным. И учите английский: придется читать тонны убористого текста ) (эх, если бы еще авторы умели пугать!)
Try Barrow Hill first; this plays similar but is longer with more variables, also much trickier. Great challenge for patient fine-tooth combers who're prepared to make some bemusing leaps of logic, but it seriously lacks the intrigue & mystical quality of comparable games like The Lost Crown. Also clearly not optimised for modern PCs.
Items & Inventory: There are many items to find. You cannot add things to your inventory until you need them, so take notes.
map: The map is essential. I own the game disc, but bought the Steam version to get the map. Why? Because you need to keep track of where you found items you will need in the future. Also, there are many places to go on the property. Many doors to find. Many plants and trees.
Puzzles: They do not feel like puzzles, but like logical situations you are functioning in. I prefer this for myself. A definite plus.
Advancing: The game is self-propelled, user driven. As you gain your footing and realize there are things to do, you figure out how to do them, where to go, etc.
Graphics: Beautifully rendered. In some areas, I need to increase contrast to see through the darkness. This could be my eyesight or my screen. I haven't heard anyone else mention it.
Exploring: Lots of doors, places to go, and things to open or doing something else with. My favorite features.
Navigation is smooth and & quick.
Notes (check list): to keep you from just wandering around (especially after taking a game break and forgetting your train of thought!)

Несмотря на то, что о Rhiannon достаточно тепло отзывалась компания Senscape (признавая, что их Scratches явно повлияла на британских разработчиков), ожидать от игры крепкого хоррора не стоит: в лучшем случае это мрачная неоготика с нарочито обходительными "пугалками" вроде проплывающей мимо окна белой тени, отражающегося в зеркале статичного полупрозрачного черепа или вкрадчивых голосов в ушах главной героини. Разработчики не стали даже пытаться довести игрока до сердечного приступа, и в своем стремлении интеллигентно "напугать без скримеров" Rhiannon растеряла весь свой хоррорный потенциал - впрочем, это нельзя назвать "проблемой" проекта. Основной его проблемой оказывается крайне самобытная внутриигровая логика всего происходящего и не всегда интуитивно понятный интерфейс.
К примеру, начало игры: мы ходим по просторной локации вокруг дома и находим дорожку, путь по которой блокирует огромная упавшая ветка дерева. Само собой, ни обойти, ни перелезть через него герой квеста неспособен, и игрок по привычке начинает искать на локации топор. И топор успешно находится - воткнут в один из пеньков около деревянной пристройки. Вот только подобрать его нельзя, потому что ни перерубать огромную ветку, ни вообще идти по этой дорожке героине сейчас не нужно; впрочем, игра вам об этом не сообщит - ни внутриигровым текстом, ни репликой самого персонажа. Топор не "слишком тяжелый" и он не "застрял" в пеньке. В отличие от игрока, героиня просто "не видит" его - предмет не отображается в качестве активной точки, без особых причин.
Все еще начало игры (по сообщениям игроков, многие тратят на вступительную загадку минут по тридцать из-за неочевидности ее решения): в письме из инвентаря сказано, что ключ от главной двери дома спрятан "под цветочным горшком". Никакой конкретики - просто где-то на огромной локации есть нужный нам цветочный горшок. Со стартовой точки идем куда глаза глядят и находим цветок в горшке на одной из декоративных стен - но он... не отображается как активная точка. Для героини его просто нет, никакой реакции! Идем по локации дальше: вот главная дверь, вот куча горшков в закутке слева от нее - и ни один не активен! Обходим карту по периметру - горшков больше нигде не видно; возвращаемся к первому найденному - не то, возвращаемся в закуток - не то. Что здесь нужно делать?!
Оказывается, хотя во время путешествия по локации игра приучает игрока, что он может двигаться лишь вправо и влево, на экране с изображением главной двери - и пока что только на нем! - игроку необходимо найти точку, где он сможет двигаться влево-вниз, по диагонали. Там и стоит нужный горшок с ключом: от главной двери не влево, а влево-вниз! (И геймдизайнерские ошибки такого типа встречаются несколько раз за игру: например, один из сюжетно важных дневников можно открыть только если вы нажмете на изображение книги с "правильной" стороны - а для этого придется намеренно искать курсором "нужную" точку на экране).
Окей, вошли в дом. Дверь закрывается, на обратной стороне видна записка: ключ от правой двери в конце коридора спрятан где-то в комнатах, к которым ведет левая дверь в конце коридора, но где именно, автор не скажет. На полу у входной двери валяется реклама с изображением четырех видов мебели. Наверное, это подсказка, и за левой дверью нам нужно найти и осмотреть эти объекты в поисках ключа? Нет! Такой мебели в доме вообще не встречается, а ключ от правой двери... [spoiler] лежит на кухне в холодильнике! Вся ситуация - это прямо-таки образец британского юмора.[/spoiler].
О "реалистичности" происходящего говорить также не приходится. К концу первого часа игры хрупкая девушка будет одновременно таскать в своем интвентаре поленья, длинную металлическую лестницу, пару записок, банку кошачьего корма и дохлую мышь. Зачем? Потому что пригодится, но ни игрок, ни героиня еще не догадываются, где именно. Кроме одинокой строчки в журнале (вроде "растопить камин" или "зарядить плеер") других подсказок нет: решения зачастую оказываются логичными, но без прохождения под рукой игрок постоянно рискует пропустить какой-нибудь критически важный предмет, и благодаря этому застрять в продвижении по игре на неопределенно долгое время. К примеру, понятно, что старенький плеер нужно заряжать, помещая его на статичную зарядную установку, но если во время прохождения вы не прощелкивали каждый сантиметр каждого игрового экрана и не наткнулись на нее случайно, сказать, где она лежит, без обращения к прохождению попросту невозможно. Впрочем, точно так же можно проглядеть и сам плеер: сюжетно необходимые объекты никак не выделяются из общего фона и легко теряются на нем среди прочих мелочей, которыми здесь забита каждая комната (серьезно, даже Scratches не была так переполнена мелкими предметами, как Rhiannon!).
Временами по уровню увлекательности проект и вовсе начинает напоминать канцелярскую работу: так, во второй главе игроку нужно ходить по местным садам, чтобы с помощью книжки об особенностях британской флоры категоризировать валяющиеся на дороге веточки деревьев, поскольку символически они оказываются аналогичны древним артефактам, которые по сюжету требуется возложить на алтарь, чтобы получить в результате доступ к древней руне. Играется все это так же утомительно, как и звучит - если только вы не поклонник хардкорной канцелярской работы в квестах. О беспрерывном чтении документов, книг и таблиц я и вовсе молчу: текста в Rhiannon хватит на толстенный том, и, поскольку в записях обычно заключены (разной степени прозрачности) подсказки к логике решения местных квестов, их прочтение оказывается необходимым для игры без постоянного обращения к прохождению.
Впрочем, практически ни один из перечисленных в этом обзоре "недостатков" не является настоящим недостатком для поклонников квестов "старой школы". С этой точки зрения у Rhiannon много достоинств: она долгая, требует от игрока повышенной внимательности (либо компульсированного прокликивания каждого экрана) и любви к изучению длиннющих текстов, ломится от предметов и активных точек, и при этом обладает крайне своеобразной, но все равно приятной неоготической атмосферой.
Вердикт: любители казуальных квестов с подсвечивающимися предметами и очевидными решениями задач вряд ли будут рады Rhiannon, однако квестоманы, ностальгирующие по олд-скульной хардкорности, останутся довольны.
This remains one of my all time favourite adventure games. If you enjoy a slightly spooky atmosphere, and enjoy figuring things out on your own (but with a bare bones journal which will help point you in the right direction but does NOT hold your hand) then this is the game for you.
Largely overlooked, yet on the same level as Barrow Hill and indeed The Lost Crown,
it has a fascinating plot which features a relaxing game play (no running and hiding from enemies) and yet the plot is equally challenging, at the same time. You will be learning(at a simple level) about the branches of the Mabinogion ( a series of Welsh Mythological tales) and it's prevalence through many generations but you will also be learning about a few types of alternative medicine practices such as homeopathy(oh and alchemy, and ancient celtic texts!) I personally love learning in a game ... and I love mysteries, which this game has, in abundance. Full of puzzles and sleuthing, this is a long game, and one that I heartily recommend. (I have about 4 copies of this game and have played it many times.. )
Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is an old point and click classical adventure. Lacking 3D graphics, you just click around between various photographs of places on the map and solve the puzzles surrounding the old homestead to uncover the supernatural mystery.
While the game was published in 2008, even for the time the graphics are not very good at all (remembering Far Cry 2 is also from 2008!). Correspondingly the game is limited to a 4:3 aspect ratio as presumably England hadn't quite moved on from 4:3 in 2008, as the first 16:9 display was delivered to eager British scientists in London in 2017. For a game from the UK, the writing is suspiciously poor as well. With the technological shortcomings taking the game quality from bad for 2008 to absolutely terrible in 2019, I can't recommend this.
Exactly my kind of moody celtic-inspired exploration point-and-click game. I wish there were more like this out there.
The game was made in 2008, but it feels like nineties. graphic and sound quality pretty bad and Myst-style mouse control and camera system awful that's why navigation can be disorienting, i had no idea where i was or where i was going for about ten minutes and I got lost a lot therefore it was just a chore to play for me. gameplay dull and slow and there is no music at all. some puzzle solutions also absurdly complicated and you cannot collect items until you are on the "right" quest, meaning there is a lot of back and forth go fetch moments. i very tired of finding things I could pick up but not put in my inventory -yet- but maybe later. i simply didn't enjoy from this game.
Amazing, wonderful, deep, exellent game i wish there was more. They really dont make games like this anymore

I have enjoyed the time i'm spent in the game. intriguing and worth playing. A alot of fun and brain work.
This is definitely not a AAA title, and it shows in the graphics and the clunky navigation/movement, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying it. I appreciated how some of the puzzles went beyond obvious logical conclusions like "use match on unlit candle" and required you to actually read the in-game books to gather information necessary to solve puzzles. This "research" aspect of it had me feeling really invested in the game, with my scribbled notes all spread out across the counter. I'm lucky that I did not encounter any of the game-breaking bugs other users reported, but still, tread with caution.
This is not a good game.
It is, however, a very COMPELLING game.
I have so many things I could grump about, but it can be summed up as: very clunky, oftentimes ridiculously obscure answers to puzzles, but you really want to keep going to find out what happens next. The writing is very good, and I am impressed.

Замечательный, очень интересный мистический квест, прошел с удовольствием. Нашего персонажа приглашают присмотреть за древним имением, купленным недавно. Хозяева решают на время выехать, так как их дочери - Рианнон - становится плохо на территории имения. Она верит, что древние легенды об этом месте правдивы... Отличная завязка, и по ходу игры мы будем получать все больше и больше информации - читать придется очень много. Геймплей стандартный для квестов: поиск необходимых предметов и информации, решение головоломок. Игра не надоедает, постоянно выдавая новую порцию информации. Рекомендую игру всем любителям квестов.

I bought this game on sale for $1.60 something and I enjoyed it immensely! I spent many hours on this game, loved everything about it. Some puzzles were a bit hard to figure out but overall great game, great price, would highly recommend.

Game is stuck loading after I enter the house. Looked promising, but when I can't do anything after 5 minutes of playing, it's a PoS.
While not really bad, there are just too many issues with this game for me to be able to recommend it. If you're an absolute point and click adventure junkie, it's worth buying if it's on sale otherwise, I wouldn't advise buying it.
Graphics are passable but look similar to games made in the late nineties. This is also true for the interface. Rhiannon uses the same slideshow interface as the original Myst game (that came out in 1993!). Adventure games have evolved a lot since Myst and it's unfortunate that Aberth Studios were unable to create a more modern feeling game. Even the creator of Haven Moon was able to create a beautiful looking adventure game with a sleek interface. So the fact that this was created by an indie studio isn't a good argument for the game feeling like it's twenty years old.
My first issue with the game is its lacklustre writing, especially the Welsh legend that forms the basis of the whole plot of the game. I'm glad they didn't force me to read through 300 pages of Ye Olde English. Instead, we're presented with a summary that is so dry and matter-of-fact that I really had force myself to read all of it. Which is a real shame since it's the backbone of the story in Rhiannon. The rest of the journals and diaries are quite well written and the voice overs are also fine.
My other issue is with the puzzles in Rhiannon. Some are very straightforward, but others require a huge leap of logic. One of the first puzzles that really stumped me was finding the correct 4 digit code that opened a lock of the garage. I had expected the code to be either a date or a year. So when I found a birthday card from Rhiannon's father saying that Rhiannon was not only the key to his heart but also to the garage, I went looking for her date of birth but couldn't find it anywhere. Turns out that the code has nothing to do with the girl Rhianon but instead you have to enter the track length of the song Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac that you find on an MP3 player. It makes sense afterwards but if I hadn't read the guide it would have taken me days to realize this. And unfortunately, there are more puzzles similar to this one which had me stumped because of awkward logic.
The game is divided into four chapters and in each chapter, you are tasked to find a couple of items that correspond with the legend. You then have to combine these items with other items, following a different logic in each chapter. While these aren't bad puzzles per se, they weren't fun to solve and felt mostly like busy work.
What also surprised me is that the map (which allows quick travel to already discovered areas) and the notebook (which gives you hints on what to do next) were added later as part of the premium edition. Without those, the game would be almost unplayable with the large amount of backtracking that is necessary.
Level design is also fairly boring. Most of the game takes place on the farm of the family of Rhiannon and spans a small area. Some areas are unavailable at the start of the game and only open up in later chapters. So you'll see the same few locations a lot of times.
Special mention needs to go to the end sequence. It features a soundtrack that feels like it was written in the eighties with a weird out of place synthetic electric guitar that doesn't fit with the rest of the game.

Игра в самом худшем проявлении движка Wintermute Engine, а именно когда нам предстоит поворачиваться на 4 стороны с фиксированной камерой. Очень легко поначалу запутаться в 5-6 экранах ;D
Финиш - это когда на второй день расшифровываешь послание с компьютера, случайно ошибся - и вуаля, давай снова трать минут 8 реального времени на ввод уже расшифрованного. Жестокая игра, не советую...
И да, хоррор нулевой, спецэффекты хуже, чем в более успешной игре на этом же движке "Территория Призрака" - там головоломки тоже чертовски сложны, но хотя бы их не приходится минут по 10 добивать, если вдруг ошибся.
I just finished the game, this is and EXCELLENT game. I would reccomend this to ANYONE who enjoys single player point and click adventure games. I like the music, and the story is excellent! Controls can get a bit clunky... But this game is 10x better with the strategy guide. It adds more lore and clears some things up.

This is a beautifully crafted point and click adventure game. I originally played without the map and note features, which was quite challenging. However, all of the puzzles were logical, and made sense within the flow of the game.
I didn't like that you could not skip dialogue (rare in game), and that sometimes you had to wait while the note section updated itself.
But I found the story intresting, and loved how the history of the location played such an intregal part of the story. Even the blocks that kept you from going to certain places was logical within the location, and didn't feel forced.
If you like the DarkFall series, and other thoughtful puzzle games, I would recommend this game to you as well.
If there was an uption for 5 thumbs down and NO NO NO NO NO Dear god NO then i'd be putting it. Have been playing old adventure games on Steam for a bit now- I am a 90s baby who grew up playing amazing games like LBA, Grim Fandango, Myst etc. Have been playing games so far and refrained from reviewing, i dunno, cos some are amazing and some were mreh, little bit annoying, but still enjoyable. This was a painfully stupid game. Those comparing it to Myst and Riven must be out of their minds. There is no logic to how this game is played. Only similatiry to Myst is the pointing, movement system. It is very irritating you can look at things, but not be able to pick them up until youve read like one thing, ages away, meaning lots and lots of pointless back and forthing. And the spiritual nonsense to complete the game! *slight spoilers* particularly the last element Air- so apparently to complete this game you need to sync up the noise of a fridge with a calender. JUST....WHY!?! And put a plastic mouse in a cauldron for "symbolism", even though you have an actual real dead mouse in inventory. Absolute madness.
For the record, i love complicated, complex puzzle games, if i tell you i completed Riven before any walkthroughs existed then many will know what level i'm at, lol. Im not just a thickie that hates games where you have to think a bit. This game is 100% absurd.
I couldn't really get into this game. I haven't seen such quality graphics and controls on a point-and-click since the late 1980s.

Unbearable camera and movement system.
I just finished the game, and found it an enjoyable experience overall.
The plot, while not necessarily very novel, is engaging enough to provide motivation (and a reason) to rummage around the setting and pick up brick-a-brack in true point&click fashion. I also appreciate the game fleshing out the story a bit by providing a bunch of documents etc for the player to engage with. While not strictly necessary for the story to move forward, I like getting a bit of background information.
The puzzles are nicely varied and fun to solve, the atmosphere is pleasant to slightly creepy (it seems they were going for a more creepy vibe to begin with, but really eased up on that towards the middle of the game). There's a fair bunch of backtracking, but you can "travel by map", so no problem there.
The not so great:
Graphics are what they are (just check the screenshots - personally, I think they are fine).
Pretty awkward movement system (cursor arrow to go left, right etc) that you'll get used to quickly, it still makes it easy to miss some locations/corners/angles and thus halt progress.
The game has this really terrible mechanic of not letting you pick up items until specific triggers are set. It's a good idea in that it helps you not clutter up your inventory with useless crap, but at times this can be very arbitrary and means you have to revisit locations a lot. As in, (hypothetically) maybe you know you need to cook pasta, but the game won't let you pick up the pot until you've read a book on the Joy of Gardening. Needless to say, this can become somewhat frustrating.
Overall, I do recommend this, but I suggest you make use of the in-game hint system ("Notes") frequently and without hesitation :)

- Navigation is incredibly clunky (I don't mind point and click games at all, this one just didn't have enough movement options for each screen)
- music was timed really randomly, and never really fit the mood
- The four main puzzles became a little redundant by the end
- Easy to miss important items which halts gameplay until you find them
- A few glitches, like inventory objects disappearing. Which means you have to go back to your last save (if you have one. If you don't, you're completely screwed)
Overall, I'd definitely recommend it to adventure game fans and those used to point and click games.
This is actually a decent game, but there are glitches that can require you to restart your game (at least from a previous save). There's no autosave. If you don't save regularly, this could require you to replay several hours. I can't recommend a game with such bad problems, especially given that it's been out this long and has not been fixed.
“Transmutation isn’t what it’s cracked up to be”
Rhiannon Curse of the Four Branches is a budget-made, spooky adventure inspired by Welsh folklore and Mabinogion legends, and made by a small team of three developers in an aging Wintermute engine. Story revolves about an ancient curse and a family gravely hit by it, along with a very angry ghost.
The entire game is placed on a sprawling farm of Ty Pryderi as you’re trying to remove the dangerous curse and its incorporeal inhabitant, and will last you for about 10 hours. Rhiannon COTFB is designed as a Myst-clone, meaning there is almost no character dialogue and minimal voice acting, but there is a heavy emphasis on solving puzzles and uncovering story by reading diaries and journals scattered around the estate. In the first three chapters out of five, puzzles are interesting and well-designed as they rely on chemistry, musical knowledge, association mixed with a bit of history, homeopathy and alchemy. Yes, you’ve read it right: you’ll use the forgotten knowledge of alchemy to change ordinary objects into sources of power that will help you in breaking down the curse. The problem is these puzzles get to be a bit too repetitive in the last third of the game. Sound and visuals are decent, they won’t wow anyone, but they do have a quaint and pleasing feel to them. The major issue with the graphics is that the game is locked at 720p resolution, so playing this game on 4K monitors will be very taxing to the eyes, since there is no in-game option to switch resolutions.
Considering this game was created at the time game engines were very modest in what they could do and indie developer teams were extremely rare and had to fight with numerous technological and marketing limitations, Rhiannon manages to surprise the player with its decent execution most of the time. If you are looking for a game like Myst or a HOPA, do consider giving this game a whirl. As such, Rhiannon Curse of the Four Branches gets a cautions recommendation. You’ll have some fun plus you’ll learn a bit about Celtic culture as a bonus.

For a game that came out in 2008 I expected more. The mechanics took some getting used to as the moving from screen to screen thing is from the 90's. The animations were more bothersome and boring than interesting. But I did like the game's use of sound - how you hear the cat retreat out the cat flap but never see him, for example. The story line for this game was decent, but it was a pain the the but to be able to see all these items that you would eventually need but not be able to pick them up right away. The fast travel map makes up for this. I frequently got stuck and tired of going back over the same scenes over and over, so i turned to a walkthrough about a half dozen times. There was also a game-breaking glitch that caused necessary items to fall out of my inventory in chapter two so that I had to play a large portion three times. Nonetheless, I did finish the game and mostly enjoy my time with it. So I cautiously give it a thumbs up. Buy it on sale.

This traditional adventure game uses Welsh folklore as the basis for a modern mystery. A friend's daughter has become increasingly paranoid, and you've been asked to investigate the cause. It isn't long, before you find yourself trying to break an ancient curse which has been killing for generations.
I really appreciate that a fast-travel map was included in the game, as you will be doing a LOT of travelling between parts of the map. Items are not immediately available to take, so you should take a mental note of objects you can pick up to look at for when you need them. There are also a few optional tasks, such as flushing dead mice the cat brings you.
Your foe in this game isn't very threatening, able only to toss a couple illusions or move a chair. Thankfully, the handful of jumpscares are mostly atmospheric and rarely take away from the game. The graphics are mostly good, and so are the sounds. Just be warned, the music from the final cutscene is TERRIBLE. On the bright side, the game often has more than one objective in play at a time, giving you a bit of flexibility in the order you do things.
In all, this was a pretty enjoyable game... not quite Dreamcatcher-quality production, but it does make a pretty decent effort. I would give it an 8/10 for the challenging puzzles and interesting subplots.
Ein frustrierendes, aber schönes Spiel. Die Puzzles sind interessant, die Story gut durchdacht, lediglich - entweder liegt es an mir/meiner Auflösung - was es fast zu negativ gebracht hat, waren die kaum sichtbaren Teile bzw. das herumrätseln wo ich einen Gegenstand übersehen hatte. Musste leider ein paar mal in einem Lösungsweg nachlesen wo dieser Pixelgegenstand versteckt war bzw. wie man dorthin kommt. Wer also alleine - womöglich frustrierend stundenlang - nach allem möglichen versteckten Zeug absuchen kann, dem kann ich zu diesem Spiel raten.

I really enjoyed the game. It was like the old days of writing things down and solving puzzles. The only con was that you cannot pick something up until it is needed, even if you can foresee how it will be needed. So you have to remember where it was. That was the only thing I really had to "cheat" on. I looked up where things were so I wouldn't have to look in every area again.
The story was interesting, and I didn't mind at all reading the letters, diaries, clippings, emails etc. In fact, you HAVE to read them or you will miss something vital!
Anyway, fun game. :)

Сама игра в стиле бродилки и поиска различных зацепок и вещей. Много придётся читать и читать на английском языке.
Хотя игра и выпущена 6 окт. 2008 года, её версии уже давно гуляют в пространстве интернета, да ещё и на русском языке. Поэтому, в первую очередь, если вы фанат того, что бы там поискать и где оно спрятано, и вас анонс ну просто зацепил её купить, не спешите вытаскивать, свой кошелёк. "Погуглите" и вы увидете результат, что играть можно и на халяву и на русском языке, а это важно, как я упоминал, читать и многие подсказки, будут в письменой форме ;)

Erstaunlich spannend, obwohl die Steuerung etwas nervt. Grafik jetzt nicht der Überbringer, aber wer sich für walisische Kultur interessiert und einen wirklich spannenden Plot aufklären will, ist bei diesem Point-and-Click gut aufgehoben. Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse und eine große Lesebereitschaft sind Voraussetzung.

this game has a good atmosphere tinged with unease and spookiness, as well as story that pulls from the rich Welsh mythology and the puzzels are a nice challenge, (though if you skim over the clues or instructions or forget to pay attention to the order of certain steps like i did once or twice in the beginning, you will be making more work for yourself). and honestly i grew to appreciate the system of not being able to pick up certain objects until you needed them, it actually helped me remember what was what better
but it does need to be said that the in game movement is an issue. navigating inside the house was a chore at best, and it is incredibly easy to miss clues and objects because getting into the right position to see them can be very frustrating.
still, overall i liked the game, but it is not without some issues.
A digital headache.
Decent story. I actually like how you cant pick up items until you need them; keeps me from just grabbing everything like some games allow. Not quite on par with something like Myst or the math challenges of Rama, but the puzzles will make you refer to items you might have glimpsed at the beginning of the game but forgotten about by the time it comes to use them. Everything has pretty common sense solutions nothing too absurd.
Had one glitch where an end chapter item disappeared when I combined it with the wrong item. Normally a wrong combo results in a 'wrong' noise and both items returning to inventory, but only one did. Had to reload previous save to fix it. Save frequently and make multiple saves (dont overwrite).
Carefully check every direction and rotate around everytime you take a step. The navigation in this game can be a bit confusing and make you miss areas/items.
