Putt-Putt Joins the Parade is not only the first game in the Putt-Putt series, but the first game ever released by Humongous Entertainment. This "Junior Adventure" aimed at young children has fairly low stakes — you help Putt-Putt the car join a local parade — but was a stepping stone for the developer's later, somewhat more sophisticated titles.

Putt-Putt, a purple talking car, wakes up one and learns from his radio that a parade will be happening. Wishing to join, he goes to see Smokey the Fire Engine, who tells him in order to join, he'll need a pet, a balloon, and enough coins to get either a car wash or a new paint job.

Played this game for the nostalgia because I played this when I was younger as a kid. Definitely a great wholesome kids game that I will happily let my son play when he is older! I like that it teaches kids to work for what they want (doing chores, mowing lawns, etc).

Hey it's Putt Putt! Geared towards very young children, everything is extremely simplistic. I enjoyed the colors and cutesy art, and also the voice actors do a great job. If you need to entertain your child for at least an hour, it's not a bad choice.

I mean, I don't know, I guess I enjoyed the game. When I clicked on an orange, it squirted juice onto a watermelon, causing the watermelon to say "Hey, stop that", prompting me to think "Make me!" and proceed to do it again, and again, and again, for, like, two solid minutes giggling the whole time. I spent longer than I probably should have messing around with that random pachinko board or whatever it's even supposed to be. I never got stuck on any of the puzzles or anything (And I know this is a kids' game and all, but still, I have a bad history with never being able to figure out a point and click game to save my life, so the fact that I actually made it through even this one was a miracle). More importantly, I mean, I guess the game did what it set out to do, I enjoyed playing it, I'm hard pressed to think of something, like, "bad" to say about it (I mean, I guess it's a little shorter than I expected, maybe? But I hardly expected a 20 hour epic or anything), and presumably there's some understanding on the part of potential buyers of what this is and nobody is going to be going into this expecting something more (Like if this was a game for adults, it would clearly fall short of "worth your time" standards), so... I guess that means I should recommend it? I don't know, I'm just going to drink a juice box now.

I'll give the game a lot of slack, its aimed at a young audience and it's the first game from Humongous Entertainment, and while it's still charming adventure, it shows it's age

The gameplay feels too simple even for 6 year olds, and almost half of it is doing chores(deliver groceries or mow someone's law to make cash). I mean cmon, even my 6 yo self would find it a bit boring.

Also, one of the best parts of Humongous Entertainment games are all the cool mini animations they do for objects in the world you click on, which add a ton of charm and atmosphere to their games, and this game barely had any! There's even some screens where you can't click on anything besides moving onto the next scene!

And the premise itself sounds kinda boring, the first Freddi Fish games for example(made by the same company) has you going on an adventure to find kelp seeds treasure, in order to prevent all fish from dying. That's just way more captivating, for both kids and maybe even adults to try playing the game. And Freddi Fish 1 wasn't just better due to it's premise, but also for better gameplay, graphic design of the world, OST and just more objects in the world to click on.

So yeah, still a positive review from me, as a recognition for what first Putt Putt game did for gaming industry and to help create Humongous Entertainment. But you gonna keep your expectations really low here, because unless you have a kid who'll enjoy it or you're like me who has nostalgia for Humongous Entertainment games, you might not enjoy it as much

This is like the dark souls of point & click adventure games. Don't be fooled by its cutesy exterior, the game hates you and everything you stand for. It will curse your family and your family's family. When I launched this game a plague of lotuses ravaged my family's farm.

The Nostalgia Tour begins…

So, I didn’t actually get to play this one growing up, so it was nice to revisit an iconic character of my childhood whilst experiencing something new. It was really sweet getting to experience the origin story for Pep and Putt-Putt. This was also the origin story for Humongous Entertainment as a whole, as it was their first game.

There’s so much of the iconic H.E. style established in this title. This game is charming for what it is, but you can really see how they took their successes here and further realized them down the line. Of course, there’s also the library of sound effects and little quirky elements that recur throughout the entire catalogue, and it left me feeling awash with nostalgia even though I never had this title as a kid.

For what it is worth, I think this is still a really great introductory game for kids and a nice, charming experience for the older crowd. There’s definitely some lessons here for the youth, and an opportunity to connect with your kids over what video games used to be like. There’s also just a lot of funny elements to this that I just find kind of endearing. Like, this is firmly within what I call Putt-Putt’s “‘busted’ era” because if you are used to the later Putt-Putt design, as I was, then going back to this one is quite shocking haha. There’s also just a ton of funny little things to look at, click on, or think about here. Like, why does the sun look like that? Is that our god? What exactly are car groceries? He eats gas…but not through his mouth? You wipe your windshield to see better, but aren’t his eyes his headlights? What are the implications of this world anyways? There’s a stuffed caricature of a person at one point. Did these cars replace all the people? Or are humans like a myth? I don’t know, but all I’m saying is that Putt-Putt did it before Disney-Pixar and I have more fondness for Putt-Putt than those movies.

This game won’t take you very long. It’s a short little thing that’s a fun introduction to the series and gaming in general for the kids.

I recommend picking this up as part of the [b]Putt-Putt Complete Pack[/b] or the [b]Humongous Entertainment Complete Pack.[/b] On its own, I would say this is really only a sale purchase, but at that rate you might as well get the whole collection. For what it's worth, this game was only the first and there were some greater down the line.

Regardless of the nostalgia trip this game was, I would not recommend this game for a $7 price tag. To finish the full game it took 30 minutes. This game to me is worth $1 to $2 at most. It was nice to play something that I used to play as a kid, just to see how much games have changed in 33 years. Makes me appreciate how far gaming has come and how long I've been playing games.

It's a 30 minute adventure game that won't try your patience.

It's hard to even begin to talk about the thing, what do I even say about this game? Just look at it and you'll probably get it. It's a point and click adventure game aimed at children. It is, however, pretty well made. You control 'Putt-Putt' with a single button, the left mouse button, and that's it. There's nothing really challenging in the game, but that also means nothing that'll frustrate you.

The story is pretty basic, and along with it the adventure too. Putt-Putt wants to be in the parade. However, to do so he needs money. This is a surprisingly practical concern for a children's video game, but there it is. So, you go out and you do some basic chores, and then you earn a few coins and then you actually have two choices.

The goal is to spend 2 coins to get a car wash. However, once you reach town, if you explore, you can find a place that lets you change Putt-Putt's color. It costs 3 coins. So I had thought, well why would I want to do that, if I go make Putt-Putt red or whatever, then I'll have to go grind coins, right? Well, actually, if you change Putt-Putt's color, it 'counts as' a car wash for the ending. You can earn 3 coins simply by picking up the 1st at Putt-Putt's house, then delivering 1 set of groceries and mowing 1 lawn, so there's no grinding involved, you can just earn 3 coins in a single trip out of town.

There's also a robot in this game in the background, that, if you click on it, it TELLS YOU THE TIME BASED ON YOUR SYSTEM CLOCK, TO THE VERY MINUTE! Which, I thought was kind of cool, completely unnecessary, but very cool. Also, I didn't expect it at all, so for the game to suddenly spit out 'it is 6 o'clock' and then I check the time and it is indeed that time uh yeah, that was interesting.

Because this game also has Putt-Putt doing chores for neighbors and getting paid for it, this game kinda feels very... dated? I don't know if you gave a child this game today whether or not they'd really get it, those sorts of things conceptually to me always seemed very like, 60s. I don't know. It also has you deliver groceries, like in a brown paper bag which felt very dated in the way it is presented. I don't really mean 'dated' in a bad way either, more as an observation. This is an old game after all, probably made by people who were approaching middle-aged at the time, so it kinda just comes with that I suppose.

Anyway, it is at its core a children's game, there's nothing really here for an adult except a cute, short, light-hearted story that might warm your bitter, cynical, grown-up heart a little. So I guess that's not so bad.

One quiet night, I woke up to the sound of soft rustling in the hallway. The moonlight spilled through my window, casting a gentle glow over the room. I glanced at the clock—2:43 AM—and immediately remembered the reason I had woken up.
my cat,DineBag, was probably hungry again. I slipped out of bed, careful not to wake anyone, and padded quietly downstairs.
As I reached the kitchen, I saw DB's big, sad eyes staring up at mefrom his bed. I smiled and grabbed his favorite bowl, filling it with a fresh scoop of her kibble. She raised his tail high happly as I set it down, and after a few hearty bites, he looked content, her tail relaxed, but not for long
Just as I were about to head back to bed, I heard a soft honk.I turned, confused, but then the door creaked open, and there—driving through my living room like it was the most normal thing in the world—was Putt-Putt, "Hello boy," he said, smoking a cigarette,"you want to join the parade."
My jaw dropped but I still said, "No thank you, I'm good."
"Oh. I don't care, you're coming with me." Putt chuckled while saying.
I see Pep or rather Pep number 4, he clinches my arm before dragging me in Putt-Putt's trunk while I scream for my life.And that's how me and Putt-putt met for the first time.

It was A significant release in the early '90s, especially for children's entertainment, for several reasons.

The character of Putt-Putt, a little purple car that haunts my dreams, became an iconic figure in children's gaming. His friendly demeanor, simple goals, and charming personality helped to foster emotional connections with young players.

For children, having a relatable, positive character like Putt-Putt was crucial to immers them in the experience.
Putt-Putt’s adventures, which often revolved around helping friends or accomplishing simple tasks, taught kids the value of perseverance, kindness, and cooperation.
Which made sense because most of the games were made for Shelly day’s
the business person of Humoungous entaiment son, Travis, as bedtime stories for her son.

The game’s story was designed to be both fun and motivating for kids. The narrative of preparing for the Cartown Pet Parade tied in well with the sense of accomplishment—completing tasks like finding a pet, getting a balloon, and getting ready for a big event. This structure helped kids feel like they were part of something important
and exciting, giving them the sense that their actions mattered.
Story-driven gameplay was relatively novel for kids' games at the time, offering a more immersive experience than the typical arcade-style gameplay that had been dominant in gaming.

And finally, At its core, the game was designed not only to entertain but to teach. It introduced young children to concepts like problem-solving, cause-and-effect, and basic logic through simple puzzles and interactive scenarios.

This focus on educational content was a step forward in children's entertainment, making learning fun and engaging, rather than a separate or " doing boring" activity.
It was a huge part of the 'edutainment' movement, which sought to blend entertainment with learning.
As a result, many parents and educators saw the game as a valuable tool for their children's development.
Ron Gilbert, the main developer, designed the game to be fun for kids instead of just educating them.
He been seen many times telling a story on how he saw a 5 year old kid playing Monkey Island
A game he helped developed.
He didn’t know that kids could like the games he helped make so he got the idea of a company that was specifically designed to target kids.

The plot:

Putt-Putt, our main character of this story, needs to do 3 things for the new car town parade.

He need to find a balloon which he dose by helping a mom find her baby in the theater,
A pet which he found in a cave,
And finally a car wash which he does by getting money or a slick new color change.
Which you can do in any order.

We open the game in Putt-putt home with an arrangement of objects we can put our filthy hands all over.

These objects are for all three click-points we will be doing,
We have the simple one click objects such as the horns,
The more then one click objects such as the cereals or the tooth brush,
And acorse the timing clicks which are obviously the frog.
(Play all of them)

We learn by Putt-Putt radio that there a recent cartown parade during the day,
And we also learn how lonely putt is. (play him saying how much he want a dog)

We head to the road where we see a cow on the middle of the highway,
“Why yes, I’ll crush this cow with my tire easly and use him as my pet.” I think to myself
I laugh to myself with happines until realizing I’m sitting alone in my mother’s basement playing a game design for 3 year olds.

We simply honk at it to make the lucky cow go away.

We head to cartown where we will follow putt-putt for the rest of the game until we finish it.

The rest of the game give us easy challenges such as mowing the lawn for coins and delivering groceries for people.
While mowing the lawn we get a bone which we use to get pep later.

You may be asking why I decided to just stop the high quality of the video for and it because 1 I’m lazy and 2 it because of how I felt during playing the game.

For the first few seconds I had thoughts of the games but when I got jobs I just felt like leaving.
Kids may get a kick for this but I felt board because most of the game is me mowing lawns with some interesting moments sprinkled in between.

games are supposed to be fun adventures not lawn simulator the game, and this is my main gripe with how boring it is.

The other thing wrong is that the game dosne have any replay value to it, it’s a one and done deel throughout the entire story, so my positive for my first gripe make it worst sense after the first playthough you know everything. this will obviously be altered in later games since they switch some puzzles and clues together.

But the best part of the game is what came later which helped it in the long run since it give putt-putt and all the characters personaliedy.

Complete playthrough. The first game in the [i]Putt-Putt[/i] series, this one is very basic in gameplay, with little that I'd really describe as a real puzzle and I'm not really sure there's all that much of educational value that the series is targeting - beyond the lesson that you can do a shoddy job of lawn mowing and still get paid?! That aside, there's plenty of charm here, with amusingly interactive scenes, so it'll be a good choice for younger children.

PuttPutt 1 may be the simplest of the little purple car's adventures, but it sets the tone very well to start off the series.

It's a 20-30 minute adventure with unskippable text, a mouse-controlled lawn mower, and... a very simple introduction to the world and PuttPutt's pet dog Pep, but everything goes up from here. That being said, it's a cute first game, and an easy introduction to the genre for kids - albeit it quite tiny.

I got this game because my wife remembered playing it as a child and I wanted to get in on any bit of nostalgia she has for video games. So when I first booted it up I was like, "So is this the same game you played as a kid, there's like a dozen of these games?" And she said, "I don't remember it being that pixely, all I remember was you mow some lawns and can paint the car." And sure enough, you can mow some lawns, and paint the car, so this must be the game she had as a child.

I guess you can't go wrong with that. That said. That's pretty much all you do in the game. I got less than an hour of playtime and I played through it twice.

The very first game from Humongous Entertainment that started the entire franchise going forward.

All the simple gameplay, puzzles, cool character designs, engaging writing all had to start somewhere and it's here. As time goes on they improved the artstyle massively and moved out of the DOS era as they finally found their style of interactive cartoons but for nostalgia's sake it's always really cool to see where it all began with the improvements made along the way.

Putt-Putt Joins the Parade is a short educational point & click meant for children and is the very first release in the Putt-Putt series. By todays standards everything from the graphics and sound looks pretty rough and definitely quite outdated but it doesn't change the fact that the game is still quite fun and entertaining for children, even us older folks who grew up and played it before will have a nice nostalgia trip.

The game is quite short but children will definitely spend far more time exploring and having fun clicking at everything as it is very interactive and there are a lot of mini games for them to enjoy. It is also very educational teaching kids the concept of money, chores, and more. Everything is intuitive and quite easy to understand so kids shouldn't have a problem understanding what to do and the things they can play around with. Unlike the newer games in the series there is less variety to change in each playthrough and so more repetition, though the game has quite a bit of side activities that kids will likely spend a lot of time on.

Like almost all other Humongous Entertainment games, it is targeted at kids, but this one is the first entry of Putt-Putt and the first game Humongous Entertainment made, so it does not have the replay value or even the depth of the Pajama Sam or Spy fox titles (Though Putt-Putt is aiming for a very young crowd so that is a given).
For your kid or for nostalgia or for charming 30 minutes, this is fine enough.

For as long as I can remember I've always loved those old retro shooters that your friends would never think about playing. My dad had a family computer in the living room and I used to play his old copies of Doom II and Quake. I used to be that one kid in middle school who would flex that I knew a lot more about games than everyone else, as playing these older games gave me a false sense of superiority. Embarrassingly I remember a moment in sixth grade when these two kids on the playground were arguing if the new Call of Duty at the time (World at War) was better than the previous installment (Modern Warfare). I told them Quake was better and that you have to play the old stuff to fully appreciate the new. They told me off. It was an appropriate reaction looking back, nobody wants to interact with the weird "born in the wrong generation" dork. At least, that's what I would've said before I met Julia two years later.

In November 2010, I saw her sitting alone at lunch with a half eaten sandwich. playing on her Nintendo DS. She was the most beautiful girl I've ever seen; long black hair that went down to her arms, bangs that look like she cut them herself in the mirror, and circular rimmed glasses that look like the lenses were forged straight from god's template of a perfect circle. After looking at this goddess for the first time my introverted self did something I've never done before: I attempted to directly talk to someone I didn't know. I hadn't done it before, hell I can definitely say I haven't done it since, but this sense of pseudo-confidence I obtained when I saw this girl superseded all other emotions I had. When I walked up right next to her she raised her head, and Aphrodite herself was staring at me wondering what I was doing near her space. I panicked, and stuttered out a "h...h..heywhatareyouplaying" to which a gentle voice responded "The new Pokemon game!" Her quiet sound and mannerisms made my heart melt with infatuation. We talked for a few minutes, gradually warming up and ball-parking the interests we had between us. Eventually my nerdy self asked if she's played any old PC shooters, in which she responded with a "You mean like Doom? I loved those, played them all the time on my brother's computer." That was the day I fell in love for the first and only time.

We became good friends. Every moment I was with her felt blissful. I imagined sitting on the porch watching our grandkids play near the big birch tree that watched us grow old together. I wanted to be with her, her one and only. But that wave of confidence that hit me in November never came. There was only a permanent low tide. What was wrong? Why couldn't I just ask her out? This fear paralyzed me, a terminal disease that couldn't be diagnosed or cured no matter how many doctors tried their hardest. In February 2012, our freshman year of high school, she gave me an old CD-R with the words "Putt-Putt Joins the Parade" written on the top with permanent marker. "It's my favorite game of all time," she said. "Sure the gameplay isn't anything special, but my four year old self loved it. Play it this weekend, let me know what you think about it." I took the game home with me and put it on my desk. Saturday went by fast. Sunday even faster. Monday morning I looked at the unopened CD-R sitting in its slim jewel case and cursed to myself. When algebra rolled around and I saw Julia walk in my stomach dropped. I had to lie, I had to say I played it. I can't tell her I was busy last weekend, what if she didn't believe me? So I lied. I told her I loved it, really enjoyed the character of Putt-Putt, the ending was amazing, other fake garbage that makes my stomach churn looking back. She smiled, with a look in her eyes that could make a thousand kings kneel. "What color did you paint your car?" I thought for a moment, trying to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ another answer, eventually coming up with "I painted it white like my mom's sedan, it looked super cool". She paused, with a slight frown. "Oh, I stuck with purple."

I knew it immediately, she knew I didn't play it. How could I? How could have I done this to her? Why did I do this? She will never forgive me. I couldn't talk to her, she definitely hates me. I spiraled. Why would I want her to interact with a liar? I'm nothing. She didn't need dead weight to tie her down. I tried to hide my embarrassment the best I could. I started eating alone at lunch, taking longer routes to classes, going to algebra late just to avoid talking to her. This is right. She will leave me alone and finally become happy. I wanted that for her, I loved her. Slowly but surely, she became distant, becoming colder and colder towards me. By my sophomore year I realized she wasn't in any of my classes anymore. She was finally free of the filth that plagued her life. She was finally happy. At the start of junior year she moved, one of her friends saying it was because of her mom's sudden death. It was then that I realized my mistake: she wasn't being distant, it was me. I was becoming colder, not her. I was selfish. I was wrong. I imagined a false reality and executed a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ plan all in the name of her. I wanted to tell her my condolences. I wanted to apologize. I wanted to tell her the truth, that I feigned playing the game just to impress. All of this over a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ video game. She knew I was busy. She would've understood. I miss her. I just wanted to see that birch tree with her.

Once high school was over I went across the country towards Boston to get a bachelors in mechanical engineering, eventually landing a job in Delaware and met Megan. Three years later we were married, and two more years had passed by the time Tobias was born. When Tobias just turned two and my wife was six months pregnant, we moved to the suburbs and found a nice little two story house. I didn't notice it until I started moving boxes in, but our backyard had a big tree thirty yards away from the patio door. Red oak. After moving all the boxes inside I found one in the basement labeled "Stuff" with "Garbage" crossed out right above it. Inside was a dusty little jewel case, including a CD with "Putt-Putt Joins the Parade" written on it. After staring at it for a minute I decided to finally open the game Julia wanted me to play for so long. I put it in the disc drive of my ancient PC and a folder opened up with two files listed, puttputtjoinstheparade.exe and README.txt. I opened the text file not expecting anything because why do you need a README for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Putt-Putt. Written in the file was an ASCII heart, and a message below reading "I like you a lot, Nathan :)".

With the only source of light coming from my monitor, I sat alone in the dark. I sat in silence for five minutes re-reading that message. Then I felt a drop of water hit my cheek. Then two. Five. I started crying. I hadn't cried since grandma's death during my freshman year of college. I was there for at least an hour, quietly sobbing in front of that text file. In desperation I booted up the game, thinking maybe finally playing this game will absolve me of my sins, thinking that the past thirteen years of being unhappy with what I was would disappear and I would be with her again. She will forgive me for being cold and distant. She will forgive me for lying about playing the game. Her presence will comfort me. She will smile at me again. We will get our storybook ending together. Everything will be okay. And so I played, clicking the screen, mowing lawns, and obtaining coins so I could get myself ready for the big race. After twenty-five minutes of playing, I drove into a garage in which you could change the color of your car. It was at that moment I realized,

you can't paint the car white.

Oh man, I remember this as the very first computer game I played as a kid. The story line is simple with a few changes every gameplay, but it's perfect as a "learning" program for a computer. By learning I don't mean, "What color is this? It's blue." way but a "how does a computer work" way. Because it's a click interactive, it helps younger kids learn how to use a mouse, a skill that is weirdly uncommon in the newer generations who are use to touch screens.

I'm pretty bias about it because of my history with the game, but 10 out of 10, would recommend the game for younger players.

If you're looking for an in-depth title which will take a few hours to play through, with a bulk of charming characters, character growth, and an absolutely amazing soundtrack...well, you might not be looking in the right place. If that's what you're looking for, especially for the price, there are plenty of games that would fit the bill.

However, this title is teeming with nostalgia and I found myself, in the short playthrough that it is, completely charmed and smiling the whole time through. An amazing game that helped spark a number of treasured titles.

Oh boy, It's the start of 2023 Drunk Series Series staring Putt-Putt. Now I distinctly remember this one growing up, more so then Freddi Fish. So, this time around I started drinking before I played... the beginning of the video can attest to that. (I accidentally Alt F4'ed StreamLabs instead of the game). Story is simple, car wants to go to a parade, car needs pet, something something, car finds stray, parade.... Also a mother car losing her baby and is too lazy to find them herself. It was a good thing I started drinking before hands, cause the game is really short, like 22 minutes in drunk time. Drunk me still had fun, as usual.

Putt-Putt 1 (aka Putt-Putt Joins The Parade) is an ancient collection of childrens minigames made using the ScummVM engine. The various minigames are connected with a basic LucasArts style point and click adventure as you guide the anthropomorphic motor vehicle, Putt-Putt, through a family friendly adventure. The game includes characters from a series of other educational childrens games, like Putt-Putt, Fatty Bear and Spy Fox.

There's nothing wrong with the general idea, but this game is over 25 years old, it's ancient. 4:3, fixed resolution (looks like VGA). Weirdly, the devs have patched it from time to time, but this is really like putting lipstick on the skeleton of a pig that died long ago. I know that's not all that nice to say, but these guys are charging $7.00 USD for this, when you can play free educational games for kids, with much higher quality, in browsers or mobile, so how could anyone consider paying for this?

This is just a lazy attempt to cash in on some old abandoned kids game. It's really not cool.

Ah, [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]... So many great memories. Which is a funny story, by the way. See, at the moment [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b] was founded and released their first game in [b]1992[/b], I was already ten years old. And naturally, I didn't get any younger since then, while target audience of [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]'s games was always preschoolers. And yet, even when I became a teen, I just kept playing those games. Why? Well, the reason for that can be explained in only two names - [b]Ron Gilbert[/b] and [b]Shelley Day[/b]. Those of us who grew up in [b]80[/b]s sure know what I mean. While for the rest of us, let me explain. Both [b]Ron Gilbert[/b] and [b]Shelley Day[/b] are former [b]LucasArts[/b] employees and back in the days, [b]LucasArts[/b] wasn't about [b]Star Wars[/b]. Like, [i]at all[/i]. Seriously, they didn't even start with [b]Star Wars[/b] games until early [b]90[/b]s, while in [b]80[/b]s, they were all about graphic adventures.

And yes, there were times when the adventure games didn't even have graphics. Originally, such games were all about text. The games just described you the current situation and you were supposed to make choices by inputting one of the allowed commands through your keyboard. Things changed in [b]1980[/b], when [b]Sierra On-Line[/b]'s [b]Roberta Williams[/b] and her husband [b]Ken[/b] (an absolutely iconic duo that deserves their own statue) released the game called [b]Mystery House[/b]. Technically, it was still a text-based game, except this time? This time we've got ourselves vector-based graphical illustrations. Doesn't sound like a big deal and yet, it changed everything. Seeing [b]Middle-earth[/b] with our own eyes in [b]The Hobbit[/b] ([b]1982[/b]), participating in a real investigation with [b]Mr. Holmes[/b] in [b]Sherlock[/b] ([b]1984[/b]), traveling into another world by car in [b]Nine Princes in Amber[/b] ([b]1985[/b])... It felt [i]fantastic[/i]. Didn't last long, though, because yes, [b]Sierra On-Line[/b] didn't stop there and very soon graphics started to take over the text.

First, we've got ourselves games, in which there was still text-based input, while visuals offered us not just a series of static images, but a fully interactive graphics. The original [b]1984[/b] version of [b]King's Quest[/b] is a nice example of such games. We were still using keyboard and yet, or characters were actually moving through the world and doing things. And after that? After that the adventure games went all-graphics. And that's where [b]LucasArts[/b] joined the fun. While [b]Sierra On-Line[/b] was still considered by many as the king of the genre thanks to their legendary series like [b]Space Quest[/b], [b]LucasArts[/b] turned graphic adventures into... you know. [i]Art.[/i] Games like [b]Maniac Mansion[/b], [b]Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade[/b] / [b]Fate of Atlantis[/b], [b]LOOM[/b], [b]Monkey Island[/b], [b]Day of the Tentacle[/b] and eventually [b]Sam & Max[/b], [b]Full Throttle[/b] and [b]The DIG[/b]? Those were more than just games. Those were visual joy. Living cartoons if you want. It's pretty hard to explain nowadays, but just think about it. Only yesterday you had nothing but plain text and now? Now you were able to participate in an interactive animated movie. Right on your personal computer. Mind-blowing stuff.

Which brings us back to [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]. First of all - [b]Ron Gilbert[/b]. A man who made an [i]enormous[/i] contribution to the industry. Not only he created [b]Maniac Mansion[/b] and [b]Monkey Island[/b], he also created legendary [b]Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion[/b]. AKA [b]SCUMM[/b]. Originally, it was a tool to ease [b]Maniac Mansion[/b]'s development process, but... let's just say that even if you're too young to remember all that, you sure heard of [b]SCUMM[/b]. The tool was very useful and not only allowed developers to create the locations, items and dialogues without actually writing any code manually, but also heavily simplified the process of porting games to multiple systems. And as the result, it ended up being used in all of those [b]LucasArts[/b]' masterpieces I've mentioned above. Naturally, when [b]Ron Gilbert[/b] left [b]LucasArts[/b] to establish [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b], he just took [b]SCUMM[/b] with him to use it in his future projects. Naturally, [b]LucasArts[/b] was not OK with that. Which even led to a lawsuit that ended up preventing [b]Ron[/b]'s new games to be published by [b]Electronic Arts[/b]. And yet, [b]Ron[/b] was there, making games and his [b]SCUMM[/b] was still with him.

Now, it's time for us to talk about [b]Shelley Day[/b], a producer of the first two [b]Monkey Island[/b] games. See, [b]Mrs. Day[/b] is a happy mother. Like any good mother, she used to read her kid a bedtime stories. And like any good mother with the imagination, she also created her own stories. And the hero in those stories was anthropomorphic purple convertible called [b]Putt-Putt[/b]. A brave little car with a big heart who was always trying to help the others. Now, here's where the true magic begins. Kind mother's bedtime stories met [b]SCUMM[/b] and [b]Ron Gilbert[/b]'s approach from [b]LucasArts[/b]' graphic adventures. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome – the very first game from [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b] - [b]Putt-Putt Joins the Parade[/b].

Like I said, [b]Putt-Putt Joins the Parade[/b] is a game for preschoolers. It doesn't fully count as an edutainment, since your kid won't learn much here, but still, it's one of those things you give to your child when you want them to start exploring the world of personal computers. This game is very easy to play (long story short – you just click on things and watch the result), point-and-click puzzles are very basic and easy to solve, etc, while presentation here is a pure joy. Bright colors, incredible animation, fully voiced characters... In other words, it's exactly what I've mentioned above – an animated cartoon. Except this time? This time it's a cartoon for little kids. Now, here's a question – why did I keep playing [b]Putt-Putt[/b] and the other games from [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b] not only as a teen, but even as an adult? The reason for it is exactly that – a mix between warm aftertaste of mother's bedtime stories and an incredible animated visuals.

Simply clicking on things and enjoying the animations here, while listening to [b]Jason Ellefson[/b]'s perky voice is a pure joy. When you're a kid? [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]'s games are pure magic. But the funniest thing is – the older you get, the more you want to return to them. No matter how strong and successful you are, from time to time you just want to hear one of your mother's bedtime stories again. Because no matter how hard you try to hide it, that little kid? That little kid is still inside of you. And the best thing about [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b] and their gems is the fact that they let you to do exactly that – to become a little kid for some time. And it's a priceless gift.

Naturally, I just can't recommend this game (and all the others from [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]) enough. You have a kid? This game is a perfect opportunity to introduce them to personal computers, to teach them how to use mouse and to solve some basic point-and-click puzzles. Since [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b] was all about cartoon-like [b]2D[/b] visuals, their games aged perfectly well and look almost as good nowadays as they looked before. And, of course, if you're an adult who just wants some warmth in their lives? An adult who wants to return to their childhood for some time? [b]Humongous Entertainment[/b]'s games are a perfect choice for that. Playing those games is like drinking hot chocolate in a cold day. There's nothing like it. Dixi.
