The game had an interesting concept and I learned a lot from it. The journal added depth to the story and presented the theory in an engaging way. However, there were many instances where it failed to clearly explain the information needed to solve the puzzles, which made parts of the game frustrating. The world was beautiful and there weren't any major bugs.
Wonderful educational game
I'm not against educational games. I have great memories of playing titles like The Oregon Trail, Spelling Blizzard, and others. What stands out about those games is that they were, in fact, GAMES! They had fun puzzles, animations, sounds, and could be enjoyed strictly as a game, allowing you to learn almost by accident. Odyssey The Invention/Story of Science fails to be an enjoyable game.
Instead, Odyssey hands you, piece by piece, a 200-300 page textbook which relates the story of a young girl talking to her father about scientific concepts and how ancient scientists reasoned on topics like the shape of the earth, physics, and more. If you were to stick with reading this book, it is quite dry, long-winded, and unengaging. I gave up on it rather quickly. Fortunately, the clues to solve (almost) all of the puzzles in the game are highlighted in bright yellow within the book. If you need those hints, they are easy to find.
The rest of the game has you following a series of electrical cables around the island to different shacks and towers which contain contraptions which demonstrate different scientific concepts. If you adjust the devices to properly demonstrate the scientific concept, in the exact manner which is described in the book, then you can move on. You never solve any problems, really. You only show the concept of the theory under consideration. Anyone who has completed middle school should be able to complete most of the puzzles without the book, except for needing it to tell you exactly what it wants you to do, from time to time.
That's pretty much it. The game last for 4 or so hours for a knowledgeable adult. So, extend that time for a child.
The performance of the game is nothing impressive. It has no default controller input availability; you will need to use the keyboard or bind keys on Steam Input. The graphics are bright and cheery.
It's an okay game, but it feels like more work than play, and that defeats the purpose of an educational GAME. Still, I could see students wanting to spend time with this, rather than most teachers... So, judge whether that is good for your case.

Very positive. Teaches the player how to use reason to overcome falsehoods and reveal the truth. We need more games like this. Great work by all who worked on this project.
I enjoyed the game, BUT, fair warning this game is primarily about reading a journal written from the perspective of an intelligent young girl (guided by her parents) as she explores the same pathways of discovery taken by many great historic figures from history regarding physics and the cosmos. You'll essentially be guided by this journal to go through the same thought processes as the great Greek philosophers did to solve the mysteries of physics, space and our place in the universe.
The gameplay itself such as walking and interactions with the world are unquestioningly unpolished, awkward and jagged. It's obviously a game where the idea of the journal guiding you through the puzzles was the central concept, and navigating through the world is literally just a means to get from puzzle to puzzle. Do not expect mind-blowing world rendering here.
Each puzzle has a way of looking hard to solve until you read the journal and learn the context and thoughts behind it, then it becomes either simple to mildly-challenging to complete depending on your pre-existing knowledge of the topic, all while learning and feeling like you are closer to history and the love, fascination and dedication felt by past astrologers and physicists while discovering the world around them.

While the puzzle design is generally well done the space between items adds far to much backtracking and slow walking to make meaningful progress and slows down the entire experience.
An imaginative approach to teaching science and science history to young minds. The lessons are taught through the pages of a young girl's journal (be prepared to read, there are a lot of pages). The puzzles are really just interactive demonstrations that reinforce the concepts taught in the journal. Each lesson brings you one step closer to finding and rescuing the young girl's family.
The graphics are good making the island fun to explore. The game mechanics are easily mastered. There is no save option, but the game autosaves fairly often. I played with no issues on my desktop running Windows 10. I was a little disappointed that this installment ends abruptly mid-story, but in fairness to the developers, they covered a lot of ground in this game. And from their description on the Steam page, it appears that they're planning a sequel to finish the story.
Having gone as far as I can, I look forward to revisiting the Wretched Islands with my grandkids. I highly recommend this for students of all ages.
I'm enjoying it so far. I like the concept of a girl writing a journal and you having to read it and solve little puzzles. I find it even more interesting in the way that it actually teaches me things! So I just take my time and read the journal while making progress bit by bit. I've read 35 pages so far. :p

I'm at page 99. It takes me some time to solve certain puzzles. I tend to read too fast. It's still relaxing but it's hard to focus sometimes, in which case I call it quits.
Myst type puzzle game pure nostalgia love it.
As an astronomy graduate, I can say it's an awesome educational game about physics and astronomy. The history of our understanding of our place in the universe is presented like a detective novel, where you need to use reason and find clues to show that the Earth goes around the Sun. It's the best ways to learn about science.
It took me some extra time to complete the game, because I was looking up things like When did we first measure a stellar parallax, and how precise is our best telescope. And also pictures of Pluto.
The side story from the diary notes is kind of interesting. It does a good job of providing a backdrop to the whole puzzle island.
The music is pretty good.
The game does end in a bit of a cliffhanger, and it doesn't seem like the sequel is coming.

"Odyssey - The Story of Science" is a first person puzzle adventure where for some reason you decide to visit a tropical island and do maths and science puzzles. Yeah, me neither.
The graphics look really nice here, which is a shame, because unfortunately the puzzles aren't super interesting. I think Far Cry went a lot further than it could have by trading the traditional, gritty, dingey atmosphere of rival games like Unreal and Quake for a very pleasing to the eye tropical island theme, and that helps Odyssey, too. Shame you don't see any of it because you have to read an entire short story every time you want to do a puzzle, explaining the math and science behind the puzzle so you can then solve it (they couldn't work out how to make the puzzles self-intuitive).
And yeah, I get this is educational, but game developers don't get to charge an eye watering $15 USD just so we can learn some science. Now we're also learning about sales and marketing!
There's an overwhelming amount of reading in this game. So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through some pretty mediocre science textbook stuff because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. My gaming rig is not a Kindle.
From a technical perspective, surprisingly just one minor issue, because the graphics got a pass. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
"Odyssey - The Story of Science" has the far too high price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "The Elder Scrolls Online", "Disco Elysium" or "Hearts of Iron IV". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Unfortunately Steam reviewers aren't presented with a "Maybe" option... if they did, that's what I'd choose. This isn't a completely bad game, but it's also not one of the best. As always, if you read my review and you can overlook the negatives I've called out, or they just aren't important to you, then by all means go ahead and buy this.

Fun puzzle game with a setting that keeps reminding me of Myst.
Odyssey is a short but sweet puzzle adventure, where you learn the history of astronomy and physics to get the combination for a series of locks to move forward. The music and scenery are nice. The Graphics are serviceable, but clearly on a budget. The Narrative follows the history of astronomy in the western world, which is a nice primer for anyone interested. The game appears to be an open island, but is structurally linear.
The downside is it's a fair amount of reading. You can skim to just the highlighted bits for the answers, but that takes out the point of the game.

This 2017 game feels like made in 2007. Just because something has educational value doesn't mean it must be poorly made. And to give credit to 2007, there were some great games made that year. This game isn't good. It just feels like a failed project from that time period. This game was very clearly made by someone with zero experience in game design. On top of that it's the antithesis to "Show don't tell." And I assume the developers know what an antithesis is considering the pseudo-intellectual vibe you get from the first seconds you start this game. Straight up bad experience I'm not willing to try giving more than the 20 minutes I already did.

This is a game that will appeal to a very niche group of ppl. You need to be passionate about learning and astronomy, you need to love puzzle games, and lastly you need to be able to ignore some jankyness.
I loved the journal system and problem solving, I also learned a ♥♥♥♥ ton about old, outdated scientific fact, which surprised me...
The graphics are not good, and the movement/looking is janky. There are constant odd inconsistencies with mouse sensitivity and micro-stuttering. I was able to look past that, because he puzzles were so well done. The only real movement/exploration you do is moving from puzzle room to puzzle room. I just kinda got used to the jankyness.
If you like learning, science, astronomy, puzzles, and a little story mixed in. Its easily worth playing if you can get it for under 10$
It's an alright game most likely geared towards kids of school ages.
Overall concept seems to be there but there is a lack of world building, focused on getting through puzzles fast due to the urgency of the message at the start of the game. Going back to that message. Honestly the smartest thing would have been to go get help and not go on the island when you hear the distress signal. Would have been safer and faster for everyone. As I completed more of the puzzles I found myself wondering if I should even be on the island and if this wasnt some elaborate trap to kidnap people by claiming they need immediate help.
Anyway, most of the puzzles were fairly simple enough, I only had to read the journal about 3 times to figure out what exactly they wanted me to do for the puzzle itself. Most you can walk up to and be like oh ok this is the most logical solution without ever having to do anything other than look at it and think for a second which is why i believe this is geared more towards younger school students.
My biggest complaint is the lack of strafing when you are walking forwards, it does strafe but very very minimally which makes the controls really awkward.
Otherwise I think this is an alright game for younger players.
Recommendations I do have is, flesh the story out more. Change the reason why your on the island in the first place, fix strafing, and I would recommend having different skill levels so that adult players dont find it so easy.

Fun Little Puzzle game. a little bit buggy at times but it has checkpoints that save relatively often so quitting and re-entering will result in fixing most of the glitches. very easy to get all the achievements just a matter of progressing through the story. would recommend out of 10.
I had a really good time playing this game... I loved exploring the island, reading the journal entries to unravel the story and learn about the history of scientific understanding, and then working through the puzzles with some of the knowledge I gained. This is going on my list of favorite games. Nice work, devs!

Early review, I just played for about 100 minutes according to Steam, and those 100 minutes were basically dedicated to reading, reading, and more reading of a kid's journal that helped me solve very few, easy, and basic puzzles based on scientific models. All you have to do is follow the recipe given in the journal; you don't have to really use your brain, just read and do what it says.
One positive aspect to mention is that I really enjoy being put in the shoes of people from the past who had no access to the knowledge we have today, and experiencing how they thought and discovered parts of the truth that we now take for granted. I appreciate the scientific and philosophical approach to games, but so far there's too little gameplay and too much reading. I'm getting bored. I'll try to finish and see if my review changes, but as a player who loves games like Myst, Riven, Quern, The Witness, and The Talos Principle, I don't recommend this one.
Update: 2 more hours of reading and I don't think Im going to keep playing this.

This game is a real shame. It's actually entertaining *and* educational. I can see my niece and nephew having fun and hopefully learning some science as well as logic and reasoning through scientific method. The lesson follows the character's thought process as she learns new concepts and then continues to build upon those concepts to get more and more complex ideas. The sad part is this seems like, as usual, there just wasn't enough support for this game. It seems like there were plans for a sequel that would go into more concepts, however it doesn't look like that's going to happen. It's been a while since this game came out and there's nothing new from the developer. Hopefully if this gets more support more companies will make more games like this. If you're looking for edutainment, this is your game. We need more of this. My main praise for this game is how well it's laid out. You're following the lessons of another character, and applying what you've just learnt to puzzles that open up new areas that build upon the concepts you just learned. Very smooth and intuitive. There were even some concepts that I had to read the lessons for as I haven't used this math and just forgot how to do some of the puzzles. Please understand, this is not the next Diablo II or anything like that, it is first and foremost educational. If your child has zero interest in Astronomy and Physics, this game isn't likely to completely change their attitude, however if they are curious in nature, the puzzles and how the solutions are laid out might interest kids with a casual interest in such topics. I'm a firm believer in learning should be fun. The interest and education will come on it's own. This is a step in that direction. Hopefully an educator will pick up a school license for this game and generate more games of this type.

What a beautiful experience! I have never been so captivated by science in my life, even learned a few things along the way, the puzzles were challenging but not painfully (except the retrograde mars) and as long as you understood the principles it made sense. Even taught me a few things. I really hope you guys make a sequel.
Only criticism I have is the kids daily life notes ramble and repeat abit in places but thats barely noticeable.

I am going to recommend this game, however, it is not for impatient gamers.
The story is told through a diary, which has over 270 pages. That means a lot of reading, which can be tedious, especially if you are a non-native speaker.
The story is laid out alternately with the experiments and the history of science. While I found the explanations of experiments and the history of science very interesting (drawings are great!), the story was somewhat boring and unconvincing.
All in all, this is a very educational family-friendly game for patient players/readers.
Would recommend for Myst lovers. It is relies heavily on reading. Too much on reading. And on math and science puzzles. So maybe not much for Myst lovers. I would still recommend though.

This game is probably more challenging for younger players who are learning the basics of subjects like astronomy and physics. Its probably not a very challenging game for most adults. There's not much here gameplay wise aside from a few puzzles that are less obtuse than say, Myst, but still might confuse someone for a few minutes until the player realizes that the answer should be in a reverse order. The devs are using Unity engine, but didn't bother to optimize anything, so it is sloggy at times and a resource hog. The game still feels pretty unpolished, like I'm playing a demo to a larger game.
Part way through I stopped reading the journal entries, which are the only story elements available and hints for all the puzzles, and I was just using in game clues and my mediocre science knowledge retained from middle school science classes. I wish there was more, so at the $15 price tag, I don't think I'd recommend this game, but if you enjoy Walking Sim Science Puzzlers, pick it up on a steep sale? Maybe for a $1-3.

I am surprised by how much i enjoyed this game!
Odyssey skillfully combines walking simulator, puzzle and story elements. Yes, the gameplay drags a bit with the almost 300 pages of journal you discover and (have to) read over the course of the game but the story is really well written and entertaining to read. It comprises a kind of adventure story as well as a "scientific" exploration of the solar system and some basics of how the universe works. The latter is really well explained and easy to understand and the experiments were really interesting to read even as a well educated adult. The more scientific part of the text teaches you the things you need to solve the next puzzle. Most of the puzzles are quite easy to solve when you've read the texts but i've found some a bit hard to understand and had to watch a walkthrough to get past.
All in all, a really nice game! I finished it in ~5 hours (reading all the pages, getting lost a few times, looking up solutions and taking breaks all while running the game) but you can probably be much faster than that. For that reason I thing it's best to get the game on sale.

Beautiful Walking Simulator with Puzzles.
I truly enjoyed this game. Reading about the geocentric model (where everything revolves around the earth), how accurate it was at its time and how difficult it was to disprove, was truly an enjoyable experience. Trying experiment after experiment that slowly makes the heliocentric model (where everything revolves around the sun) more and more viable and finally being able to disprove the geocentric model, was such a great way to appreciate the history of astronomy. Every aspect of it was satisfying and I think this is a wonderful way to teach astronomy and to appreciate the scientific method.
The game itself is beautiful and the music is fitting. The movement controls are quite bad, but since this game is not about movement and more about reading and just enjoying the history of astronomy, it does not really matter. The puzzles are easy, so if you are looking for challenging puzzles this game is probably not for you. Anyone who enjoys reading about science (270+ pages) and trying out simple experiments will most likely enjoy the journey.
I sincerely hope they make an expansion.

Wenn man lieber ein Spiel anwerfen möchte, statt ein Buch aufzuschlagen, so wäre man hier gut aufgehoben, nur dass man ein Buch auch hier zu lesen bekommt.

Eine Familie wird auf ihrer Karibikinsel von Piraten bedroht und hat sich hinter "ausgeklügelten Rätseln" versteckt, die hoffentlich nur clevere Retter lösen können.
Zudem haben wir ein Tagebuch des 13-jährigen Kindes der Familie, das wir nach und nach finden. Dieses Tagebuch ist eine Mischung aus kleinem Abenteuer und den naturwissenschaftlichen Experimenten, die es unternahm.
Das Spiel endet mit offenem Ende, da es als erster Teil eines zweiteiligen Projektes geplant war, dessen zweiter Teil aber auf sich warten lässt.

Alles spielt sich auf einer überschaubaren Insel ab, deren Bereiche wir uns nach und nach erschließen, indem wir die Rätsel lösen. Rätsel ist aber eigentlich ein ungeeigneter Begriff. Es ist eher so, dass wir Tagebuchseiten finden, in denen meist u.a. ein physikalisches Experiment beschrieben wird, dessen hierfür verwendetes Modell daneben steht.
Dieses Modell setzen wir in Gang, manchmal müssen wir Regler justieren oder Objekte arrangieren. Das kann auch mal komplexer werden, so dass man es Rätsel nennen kann. Im wesentlichen bleibt es aber bei einfachen Versuchen, die wir nachmachen.
Manchmal muss man in diesen Versuchen mathematische Fragen beantworten, bspw. eine Geschwindigkeit aus Distanz und Zeit berechnen.
Bei durchaus einigen dieser Modelle habe ich mich aber auch gefragt, was sie denn jetzt von mir wollen. Da gab es recht seltsame Dinge, die man tun musste, damit der Versuch als abgeschlossen galt. Da habe ich dann auch mal in der Diskussion für eine Antwort suchen müssen.
Jedenfalls: das ist es, was man hier in diesem Spiel bekommt: Wichtige markante Fragen der Physik und Astronomie im Wandel der Epochen (geozentrisches/heliozentrisches Weltbild, Gravitation, Pendel). Erst als Text, dann als Experiment zum veranschaulichen.
Viele Spieler sind damit unzufrieden, weil das Medium Spiel viel mehr bieten könnte. Man könnte bspw. die physikalischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten durch Experimente an Modellen selbst herausfinden können wollen. Das wäre spannender, als die Antwort (vorab) in einem Buch zu lesen und es dann nur noch gezeigt zu bekommen.
Das ist kein unerheblicher Einwand, denn ich fand zwar das meiste wirklich gut und durchdacht gestaltet und habe auch so manches noch mal aufgefrischt (bspw. die scheinbare schleifenartige Bewegung des Mars von der Erde aus) oder gelernt (bspw. das mit den verbundenen Pendeln), aber fand es überwiegend eher unspannend umgesetzt. Hätte ich erst dieses Experiment gemacht und dann sagen wir mit Multiple Choice meine Erkenntnis zum besten geben dürfen, wäre ich wie ein Schüler gewesen, den man gelobt hat, weil er etwas selbst herausgefunden habe.

Auch dieses Spiel hat den Resourcengebrauch nicht im Griff. Standardmäßig ist bei hohen Einstellungen die Grafikkarte am Anschlag und die CPU auch gut ausgelastet, was die Grafik nicht wirklich rechtfertigt (selbst wenn man nur in dem Buch liest, ist es so). Bei mittlerer Qualität ist es leicht besser. V-Sync aktiviert lindert das Problem. Allerdings muss man (was ich hinterher gelesen habe) V-Sync bei jedem Neustart (auch Alt-Tab) neu rausnehmen und wieder aktivieren, damit es funktioniert.
Die Grafik ist ansehnlich. Nichts überwältigendes, aber gut gemacht.
Der Sound ist gut. Es ist nichts vertont, man hat aber Hintergrundmusik. Das Buch ist auf Englisch.
Die Steuerung mit Tastatur/Maus funktioniert gut. Controller geht nicht.

This game is not for everyone. It is less of a game and more of a teaching tool for basic physics. There is exploration and some simple physics models that you can slightly interact with, but the majority of time spent in the game will be reading a journal. The journal tells you a story about the process a kid takes to learn about physics while on a family trip. If you just want to run around the game, solve puzzles, and interact with things without doing a lot of reading, you will probably not enjoy the game. Also, don't expect any kind of high level physics with difficult puzzles. I think the game was designed around basic physics to make it accessible to a younger audience and get them interested in physics.
Unfortunately, like many indie games, there are some annoying technical problems. I would say that I would hope the devs would fix the issues soon, but at the time of this review, the game has already been out for 5 years. It is possible to fix the issues yourself, but it is not as simple as changing values in a config file. It is not difficult to do, but you will need to use a program to unpack the game files before you can make the changes. There is a thread I made in the discussions explaining what to do. The game ran fine for me after I fixed the issues.
The issues I came across and fixed were:
- Constant stuttering because the game is being rendered at 50 fps which is not the same as my monitor.
- Negative mouse acceleration. The faster you move the mouse when looking around, the slower it moves.
- Slow strafing. Strafing left or right while not moving forward or back is fine, but if you are walking and then try strafing at the same time, the side movement is extremely slow.
- Textures popping in way too close to the player.
- Shadows are shown on objects farther away on medium settings than on high.
- Vsync is disabled every time I start the game. The box will remain checked, but I had to uncheck and recheck the box every time I started the game to get vsync to work.
Another major issue is that the story is not complete. There is more to the game, but it abruptly ends in what feels like the middle. I read that this was because of funding issues. Hopefully they will be able to make the next part.
I enjoyed the game a lot and would recommend it to anyone interested in basic physics who understands that it is more of a teaching tool than a game, has a lot of reading, has some technical issues that you will need to play the game with or take the time to fix yourself, and does not have a completed story.

It's not for everybody, of course, but I really enjoyed it, and gave it its due. Don't think you're playing Myst-- it's really not quite as puzzle-based and there isn't the exploration/discovery of a Myst. But that's a high standard-- doesn't mean this game isn't enjoyable. Let's look at the pros and cons:

All in all, I enjoyed the game, and was able to immerse myself in it. After initially skipping to the highlighted portions of the journal (which indicate what you need to do to progress), I felt I was probably missing the "soul" of the game, so I went back and read everything then continued to read everything. I found that a much more enjoyable (if not longer) experience.

The game teaches the basics of how we know the shape of the universe. It is slow and there is no time limit. It could have benefited from music changes, seeing the pirates or other things trapped behind you, and easter eggs hidden though the game and possibly more than one option of task to complete instead of the linear strategy. I would recommend the game for 12 and up. Overall, educational and enjoyable

미스트같은 스타일이라고 해서 기대하고 시작했는데 대실망입니다. 주인공이 어떤 구조 요청 신호를 듣고 무인도에 도착해서 섬에 먼저 와 있었던 4인 가족 중 한 아이의 일기장을 찾아가며 힌트를 얻고 퍼즐을 풀어가며 다음 지역을 개방하는 구성입니다.
미스트처럼 환경은 그냥 지나가는 배경에 지나지 않으며 (풍경은 예쁩니다) 정해진 위치에서 퍼즐을 푸는 식으로만 게임이 진행됩니다. 퍼즐에 대한 힌트는 아이가 남긴 기록을 통해 알게 되는데, 여기에서 치명적인 문제가 있습니다. 기록의 한 부분을 얻으면 대략 3~5페이지가 저널에 추가되는데, 여기서 퍼즐에 대한 힌트는 길어야 3~10줄 정도입니다. 기록을 읽자니 페이지에 빼곡하게 채워진 텍스트가 양만 많고 재미는 정말 없습니다. 내용인즉슨 아이가 아빠 엄마의 도움과 스스로의 탐구로 과학 (주로 천문학과 지구과학) 지식을 배우는 내용인데, 별다른 플롯이 없이 그냥 지식의 나열 뿐이라 읽을 맛이 전혀 나지 않습니다.
게다가 퍼즐은 힌트만 읽으면 (저널에 노란색으로 강조되어 있어서 다른 내용 다 무시하고 힌트만 읽는 것도 가능합니다) 10초 안에 풀 수 있을 정도로 너무 쉽습니다. 너무 실망해서 초반까지만 했기 때문에 중후반에는 난이도있는 퍼즐이 나올 수도 있겠지만, 다른 외국인유저들의 리뷰를 보면 그렇지도 않은 듯 합니다..

I was torn over whether or not to recommend this game.
It has numerous faults, particularly its rather abrupt ending and overall short duration (it took me about 5 hours to complete, and much of that time was spent reading), however I decided that I will recommend it because [i]I did genuinely enjoy it[/i].
However, I would advise people to [i]buy it on sale, primarily because of how short it is[/i].
[i]I think it was a decent attempt at an educational Mystlike game, and I would like to see a sequel, but I would hope that a sequel would fix the shortcomings of this one.[/i]

I bought this expecting it to be like a spiritual successor to the old game Physicus, or for it to be a bit like Myst or Quern. It's close to those, but not quite the same. There's more reading, and the puzzles aren't really puzzles because the journal more or less tells you the answer most of the time.
If you're looking for something educational or relaxing, this might be the game for you.
If you're looking for something with good puzzles or something similar to Myst, try Quern instead.
[h2]The Good[/h2]
I definitely learnt a thing or two, particularly about the history of astronomy and pendulums.
Some of the puzzles were quite memorable/enjoyable. I particularly liked the one involving multi-coloured lights and parallax, and figuring out how to open the safe by filtering out the irrelevant information.
Having the rotating bridges to make backtracking easy was a nice idea, though there's rarely a need to backtrack.
The way the journal gradually steps through various related concepts works quite well.
I liked the island's atmosphere.

The two biggest downsides of this game are its ending and how short it is.
[h3]Short Duration[/h3]
As mentioned before, it's only 5 hours long and a lot of that is reading rather than the 'puzzles'. It definitely feels like the developers ran out of time and money and had to cut things short.
[h3]Anticlimactic Ending[/h3]
The biggest letdown of all is the way the game ends. I was expecting at least a cutscene or an epilogue, but instead a congratulatory message just flashes up on the screen and the game ends.
I presume there's a sequel planned, or perhaps the developers just ran out of time or money. Not that I wouldn't like to see a sequel, but to just end with a few lines of text on a black screen is really anticlimactic and rather takes the wind out of the game's sails.
[h3]Easy Puzzles[/h3]
The 'puzzles' themselves aren't very challenging because most of the time the journal tells you how to solve them, and the exact passages that are relevant to the puzzles are highlighted. A small number of puzzles require a bit more thought, but most of the time you don't have to put much thought into it.
I think I would have found the game more challenging if there was an option to disable the text highlighting in the journal, requiring you to work out which passages are relevant to the puzzles, rather than being more or less told the answers.
Alternatively, it would have been nice if the puzzles required a bit more thought. One of the later puzzles (which involves opening a safe) actually required the application of a principle that was taught by the journal rather than the journal directly providing the answer. I would have liked to have seen a few more puzzles like that.
[h3]Lack of Polish[/h3]
The game is a little bit unpolished in places.

[*] At the start of the game, parts of the islands flicker in and out of view because the render distance limit is too low, and unfortunately there's no way to change the render distance in the options.

The game tries to be grounded in reality, which for the most part it does well, but the journal's author seems unrealistically precocious for her age, and it seems quite ridiculous that they'd have all the materials to build all these contraptions.
The journal also had numerous typographical errors, one or two spelling inconsistencies, and a few spelling mistakes.
The game does delete your save at the end, so bear that in mind.
I really liked this game. It was really pretty and the music was amazing. I liked the science aspect (of course I would as a physics and calculus lover) and that everything was demonstrated in the journal notes. The journal was also the downside because you'd get like 20 pages and then be able to play for a minute or two so honestly by the end I stopped reading the journal unless I was looking for how to work something out.

Not necessarily bad, but for me very tedious since the game-play is about 1 minute per 20 pages of book read.
Short puzzle game that focuses on the narrating a story through the journal of a child. This journal also contains tips to solve the puzzles you will encounter, which are all related to science.
The difficulty bar is set rather low, so it's an enjoyable adventure that anyone can go through easily in 1-4 hours.
The technical aspect is rather mediocre: graphic isn't particularly remarkable although it can show some good angles, there are a few texture errors around and the sounds aren't much better. There's still a problem with movements, which is the strafe keys not registering if you're also pressing forward.
Expect something minimalistic and rough around the edges.
I want to recommend this game because, overall, I had fun with it. Bear in mind that you shouldn't pay more than a few bucks for it. With the 85% discount it's a fair price, avoid it at all cost if at full price.

A great game, some reading but the stuff you need is highlighted, so no biggie. Some of the puzzles are more straight forward than you would think when looking at them. If you get stuck, just try and think "It's simpler than I'm making it" and you'll be fine! :) Nice scenery, a great story and some very interesting puzzles :) Highly recommended!
This one is quite good. There are inspiring puzzles in an island. Puzzles are so scientific and takes time to solve. I think the game is not gain to you fun but it's kinda relatable. So don't give up and solve the puzzles!

Puzzle/adventure это мой триггер - увидел в магазине, мельком глянул скрины и доступные ролики, купил. Иногда, конечно, просматриваю и обзоры, только чужое мнение меня редко волнует.
После покупки запустил игру просто, чтобы получить первое представление. Пришлось побороться с бесявым ускорением мыши (это уже потом я понял, что нужно перезапустить игру для применения новых настроек). Не читая никаких записей журнала (которых в игре будет чрезмерно много) я побегал по округе и порешал сплеча, т.е. фактически наугад, все попавшиеся на первой локации "головоломки".
На следующий день уже взялся проходить основательно заново. Первое, что меня расстроило, это подача сюжета - какой-то малолетний нерд вместе с семьёй прибыл на этот "запретный остров" (без какой-либо защиты периметра или хотя бы предупреждающего знака) и начал исписывать в своём дневнике десятки страниц и разбрасывать их по округе. Тематика головоломок первой (бОльшей) половины игры посвящена астрономии, и её подача достойна слушателей 10-12 лет [тут нет сарказма и ничего такого - я уверен, что для такой целевой аудитории задумка вполне удачна]. Дальше идут головоломки на физику, но журнал я уже читать перестал из-за огромного количества ненужной и скучной "воды", только изредка обращаясь к выделенному тексту для понимания сути стоящих передо мной задач.
Когда я пробегал в первый раз, то мне попался ящик на пути, на нём лежала кирка, которую я подобрал и использовал для вскрытия этого самого ящика. После второго запуска я пошёл в другую сторону и нашёл другой ящик, на котором не было кирки (и я понял, что мне придётся за ней сходить), но я всё равно на него нажал, и кирка сама появилась в инвентаре...
Печали добавило осознание того, что все эти механизмы головоломок на необитаемом острове построил (или переделал) своими руками без всяких бензопил, перфораторов и прочих инструментов ребёнок, да ещё и хромоногий.
Концовки у игры нет, только завершение этапа, что намекает (или не намекает) на продолжение. Но это "завершение" оставило меня примерно в таких же чувствах, как и спуск на лифте в подземелье Quern на первых версиях пиратки
I really like this game, although a bit too much educational for me. Reminds me a lot of the wonder of the Myst series and others like it. Excellent 3D modeling, animation, and puzzles. Almost 300 hand written pages of story/education.

Bought this game on a whim for a buck, and as someone in their 20s, I can say it's quite good as an educational tool. Really brings back the days when my teacher would have us play the Magic Schoolbus for recess when it was raining. Loved those games.
This is good proof that video games can be used as excellent learning tools for interactive lessons for kids, and though it is rough in some aspects, such as the movement controls, I still recommend this game to anyone who wants to give their kids a nice learning experience.
That being said, I didn't finish it. Not because of the puzzles, which are very easy (understandably so). Not because of the story itself, which is somewhat engaging. No, it's because of the writing, as in the journal writing you have to read through to know what to do for the puzzles and to get the story. The prose is so dull and meandering, and I truly did not care for the events leading up to the interesting aspects. This is definitely made for kids, but improvement in the writing to make it more engaging is a definite must. Better yet, removing a lot of it and instead engaging the audience in a more in the moment, interactive narrative would be better to avoid losing people's interest.
Besides that, this is a good game, and a great indicator of what can be done with interactive learning for schooling.

This is marketed as a puzzle game, but it's not. It's actually an educational fictional [b]book[/b] with interactive 3D models. If you walk in expecting a game like Myst or The Witness, you will be massively disappointed. However, as an book that teaches you Science, this game does a fantastic job.
The game works like this: you find a few pages from a girl's journal. In it, she tells the story of her family living on an island, and teaches you something about Astronomy or Newtonian Mechanics. Then nearby is a 3D interactable model, with a "puzzle" that's actually just a test to ensure you understood what you just learned. Completing this unlocks the next area, where you're greeted with more pages and the cycle starts again.
The game does a fantastic job of teaching. I consider myself fairly well-versed in Science, and even I learned a ton about what and why the Greeks believed what they did about the sun and stars. The interactable models help teach the concepts in ways that a book alone could not do.
The journal is whopping 270 pages long, so it truly is a [b]book[/b]. You will spend most of your time reading. The game takes ~5 hours to beat, and 3-4 hours of that is just from reading.
Unfortunately, for as much as the game does well, it does suffer from a number of technical problems:
• The camera and movement are very choppy. This is [i]extremely[/i] common in poorly-programmed Unity games.
• Objects pop in and out of existence as you walk around, even nearby objects. Also the mipmapping changes frequently, causing blurry objects to suddenly become clear or vice-versa.
• Strafing while walking forward doesn't work right, making moving around annoying.
• When the game is minimized, it has 100% GPU usage for some reason.
• After you beat the game, it deletes your save file. lol?? I hadn't finished reading the book, and had to look up the final pages on YouTube.
However, despite this, I still think this is a great game for anyone interested in learning more about Science. Anyone looking for a challenging puzzle game, however, should look elsewhere.

pretty nice and straight forward puzzle game. physics intensive puzzles but you do get some help in form of diary sheets you find throughout the game. all sheets are unmissable as they are a part of each puzzle.
i enjoyed its complication and it simpleness at the same time.
the only thing that bothered me is the FOV i feel like i have crossed eyes. a bit painful....
i recommend this game for all who like puzzles or even for those who play HOGs from time to time like my self.

Wow ! What an excellent educational game. It should be available in all schools. I have a university education in sciences and physics (being a meteorologist) but as a visual person this game simply "showed" me what I learnt in high school. The aw moment for me was the retro trajectory of planets. I got it on paper when I was at school but seeing it in movement. Simply fabulous ! And what about the whole scientific methodology taught by the Father to his son. As you can see I did enjoy a lot this game for its educational part. Job well done. Looking forward to explore the next island.
It's the first time a have to say this about a game... don't buy this if you have a powerful PC this game is a ressources hog with no options to prevent this program to turn your computer into a turbo jet engine it's ridiculous.

I could give you a list of 100 things that could, and maybe should, be better, but none of them change the fact that Odyssey is top-tier edutainment and an excellent MYST-style adventure. I had a lot of fun with it, and I even learned a few things about astronomy and physics that never came up in school.
The story is presented through a 13 year-old's journal, which is probably the game's target demographic, though I imagine a particularly inquisitive and patient 10 year-old would be able to keep up. Like I said, some of this was new to me, and I'm a college-educated 33 year-old who has helped teach high school science classes. The material is presented clearly and in a way that encourages curiosity, observation, and experimentation.
Just know that there's a lot of reading. Like, it's mostly reading, and the "To be continued..." ending doesn't offer any closure. It's engaging, though.
Highly recommended, as long as your expectations are set appropriately.
Odyssey - The Story of Science is a one-of-a-kind edutainment game in its concept and execution. Odyssey brings you to a remote tropical island where you must follow clues in the form of torn journal pages and solve puzzles along the way that test your understanding of basic astronomy and Newtonian physics concepts. The ultimate goal of the narrative is to find a family who are on the island on an archaeological expedition but find themselves hiding from unexpected visitors with ill intentions.
The game does a remarkable job of narrating its scientific concepts with the use of a heavily worded but carefully composed journal that retraces the historic arguments and proofs using simple and easy-to-understand language. After reading through the journal pages, you are then faced with puzzles in the form of levers, switches, and buttons that help to reinforce your understanding of the concepts you have just acquired. It is a highly well designed interactive experience that helps the player grasp the basic tenets of the scientific method.
Looks wise, the graphics are pretty decent for a Unity engine game, although some of the terrain textures does not look good when up close. Many reviewers find the game play of reading journals and finding clues among the abandoned man-made structures on the uninhabited tropical island that serves as the setting of Odyssey resembling the atmosphere in the game Myst, which I agree. Unlike Myst though however, the music and sound design of Odyssey can only be described as mediocre at best. Still, the overall visual and audio experience does manage to give the game its slightly mystical atmosphere.
Odyssey is very linear in its game play. You traverse the environment in a first person perspective, there is no jumping or falling off of edges, you cannot miss objects related to story progression as they are all out in the open at very visible locations, and it is almost always obvious where you should be going next.
Overall, I would recommend this game if you can afford to spend a couple of hours to sit down, relax, and enjoy learning some basic astronomy concepts in a relatively stress-free setting. I certainly enjoyed this game and hope that the developers release a sequel.
Its like a short myst game about middle school science but I don't think many people are going to read the entirety of the 275-page diary
I got this game more for the island theme and natural beauty. I thought that it's going to be a peaceful atmospheric game. But it is too in-depth to be of a casual fun.
If you're looking for casual puzzles and have a day job that drains you mentally then avoid this game.
To solve these puzzles you'll need to read through a manual that contains lots and lots of text. If you have a hectic day job (especially a retarded boss who sucks your soul) then you'll find it very difficult to read all that text and make progress through these puzzles.
So summarizing:
- This is not for you if you're only getting it for the island theme or atmospheric tag
- There's a lot of reading needed (though you can skip certain parts)
- The puzzles aren't casual puzzles that you can figure out by tinkinering around. They need you to understand the astronomy concepts and figure out various parts of it.
- This is not for you if you're in for it 80% because of the atmospheric tag
For the rest of you if you're okay with hardcore astronomy puzzles then go for it.
I played the game till the constellations puzzle where you need to figure out the sun's position, and the moon's position at various zones to figure out a password. I googled the sun's position for July 9th (the date of the journal's entry) but it turns out that the right answer was something else.
So so game. some interesting science though be prepared for a ton of reading and the same music track played for the entire game with no other audio or voice acting. The writing and graphics aren't bad. if you have problems with motion sickness do not play this game. The first person locked camera can be pretty bad for motion sickness and I find my self desperately wishing for a third person camera at times. your view follows your mouse unless you are looking at your inventory. left shift works for run but right shift does not. left and right movement without moving the mouse seems to not work great or not work at the same time as moving forward.

i only looked at the screenshots without reading any of the description. so i expected a puzzle game but instead i went back to my school days. not exactly what i had planned for the day!
still it does a decent job at being educational. it's perfectly fine if you want to buy it for your kids or in case you're a little nerd yourself. but personally i wouldn't buy or play it again.

graphics are decent, controls are a little janky but workable, the puzzles are easy and the science behind them is discussed in the journal entries scattered across the island. also the solutions are clearly visible in the journal so solving the puzzles is kind of like doing homework with all your books on the table.
finishing and 100% completing the game took 4 hours. at least half of that was spent reading the almost 300 pages of journal. not exactly thrilling gameplay for an adult...
it's educational only, really. if your school days are behind you there is absolutely no reason to buy or play this game. if you're like me looking for actual puzzle games i recommend the [i]the room[/i] series of games. they are really awesome puzzle games!

Really a beautiful game, not so long but quite funny to play. You go along with a chain of puzzles on a well rendered island, so no need to stress out or despair to figure out what to do or where to go next. Puzzles are well made, not that hard to solve and with bits of science to test you with and without the help of the journal.
The graphic is cool and the background music fits. Controls are fine, just the mouse sensitivity made me feel dizzy sometime.
Very nice little game. It worked flawlessly on Linux (Manjaro) after I had set it to Proton version 4.11 in the properties.
First off I'm going to start with the controls. You can not strafe side to side while you are walking or running. It makes this game frustrating to navigate if you are used to moving in 3D games at all. The motion of the game makes me a little bit sick, its got a weird tremor to it that just turns the stomach at times. Overall not a great game.
I highly recommend this game to anyone, child or adult! The developers combined the beautiful aesthetic of an island paradise with a charming story of a girl retracing some of the most important scientific discoveries in history. The puzzles/experiments that are presented in the game are a great way of consolidating what you learn from following the girl's voyage of scientific discovery through her journal entries. Despite being quite well versed in science and mathematics, I found myself learning so much. I wrote notes for the entire game of what I learned! Also, it's evident that the creators really care about science and education! Cannot recommend this game enough!
Suuuuuuuuper basic 'puzzles.' They weren't even really puzzles, just barriers that ask you to confirm that the Earth is round and Venus has phases. It might be good for a precocious 7 year old, but that's about it. If you already know that the sun goes around the Earth, and that momentum is a thing, you're only going to be bored by all these "puzzles," barring the two middle school algebra ones that might throw anyone with basic math struggles. Also, the graphics would be nice in 1996, but these days it's not too impressive, and honestly a bit glitchy.
I realize that this game was probable made for children, but even children would find it super easy. Also, the music style, the attempt at a Myst-like feel, and the inclusion of some above-grade-school level algebra makes me wonder. A 7 year old is going to struggle with the math puzzles, but also might be put to sleep by the calm and quiet environment. But, anyone older than that is going to be bored by every other puzzle.
Of course it's a nice idea to make an education game for kids, but this one was not well executed.
It is a fun way to learn more about science. There will be a lot of reading but it is worth it, especially after completing a puzzle using the knowledge you have learned.
Recommend this game during sales, this game is short but really good otherwise, the puzzles make you think at the start of the game, things do start to slowly taper out as you go though, the puzzles eventually becoming super easy.

This game does a great job of being educational but also really fun. There's quite a bit of reading involved, but I personally like that sort of thing. The puzzles are really thoughtful, and I found the astronomy/physics topics really interesting. It's been a long time since any sort of science class for me, but I felt like it taught the subject matter really well without being dull or tedious. Definitely recommend for fans of Myst or Quern.
