This game is a rough diamond, there is a lot of potential. 5 different characters, all with an unique orthodox moveset. They nailed the controls here, it's a mix of the funniest traversial options plattformers offered across the ages of momentum based plattformers, tied to each single character.
You have swing hooks with the frog, bouncy wall jumps, with the kangaroo, Spin Dashs with the Armadillo, Spider Climbing with the Panda and generally Air Movement with the Pelican.

Since you can swap immediately between 2 of the animals in designated passages across the 30 Levels of the game, there is an interesting combination of these movement options possible. Each stage consists of dozens of "gears", these gears change their apperance in context of the animal you interact with. They become grappling spots for the frog, plattforms/walls for the kangaroo, barrel cannons for the Armadillo and so on.
In that manner you can for example swing at an gear, take the upward momentum and then change to the armadillo to catapult you above.
The leveldesign forces such quirks constantly.

Unfortunelately the leveldesign can be hit or miss. While I love the controls, there are some of the most confusing levels I encountered yet in such an game.
Moonlight Mountains for example is a mess of an level with a lot of pointless gears leading to nowhere and a lots of "waiting" passages between badly placed checkpoints.

There are extra "hard levels" but they were designed very sloppy, it seems like quality assurance was lowest here. Especially if you wanna collect everything all the satisyfing upholding of the momentum comes suddenly to an halt. I think there is way too much emphasis on collecting things in levels where the camera has to scroll on both Axis, in this manner you constantly slow down because you wanna make really sure you found everything.
It doesn't help that the game will frequently push you forward by suddenly closing doors behind you activating traps or not making clear which way leads to the main path again. There are certainly games who handled it worse. (looking at you Crash 4) but it leads to downplaying the biggest strengths of the game.

Also lots of animations could be more fluid, especially on bosses, signposting a bit better, there were enough moments when suddenly things happend I couldn't forsee. Again the "hard levels" are the biggest offender here, especially the one in the Ice World where the lava rises. In this level sometimes Walls just don't break although you spin dash against them. There is a confusing change of rules that kinda leaved me bamboozled how to navigate in this level fast enough, since the the armadillo now can rise with the lava. for some reason.

In the end I think it's too much of an hazzle getting 100% in the game, there are "hidden animal switches" where you play the same level again just with a different combination of animals. It doesn't change too much of your approach in most cases and simply isn't an engaging way to stretch the content with yet another collectible.
Even for the bossfights the game wants you to collect blue orbs, so instead concentrating on the boss you're more concerned getting all the orbs which also are tied to enemies that despawn after a short time. It's really annyoing and makes the fights less satisying.

So yeah it's kinda pity that the direction of this game is in its own way and distracts from the actual marvelous movement. I think if you are a speedrunner you will feel right at home. If you don't give too much about notoriously collecting everything, its enjoyable as well, but there are too much annoying or just downright boring levels that hinder the game to reach its full potential.

Anyway all in all I still think it's worth a thumbs up, simply for how entertaining my first playhours were.

This is one of the best platformers I have ever played, and it is a travesty that it isn't that popular. The mechanics are unique, sporting a low skill floor and an incredibly high skill ceiling. The controls feel snappy and responsive, although there is some aspects you need to get used to. Each animal compliments each other, and even in the game's linear design, you still find yourself picking favorites, which is further shown by the level's design towards many different animals being able to get around. Swapping is real fast, and feels like an extension than a mechanic. On top of lots of content, unlockables, gems, and gears, this game has a lot to do. It even has a multiplayer mode, which is more of a gimmick than a serious mode, but still is boatloads of fun when played with a friend. The visuals are pretty nice and vibrant, and the music is some of the best I have heard in a long time.

However, I cannot lie and say it is perfect. Some situations feel somewhat unfair, like bouncing into multiple damage surfaces, killing you quickly. There is also some jank within the game (the Panda seems to have the most of it), but there isn't too much coming from an indie unity game. There's some other small nitpicks, like level restarts taking too long and achievements not tracking properly, but those are really small issues.

Overall, I think everyone who likes challenging, movement-intensive platformers should give this a shot. It's rather cheap (especially on sale), and brings a fresh new approach to the platforming genre. The only upsetting part of this game is it's affect on the developers. They were graduates excited to make games, but broke up their company due to the poor sales on Mekazoo. As much as I know it will not happen, I really wish I could see more of what The Good Mood Creators has to offer, but I don't think I will be seeing that anytime soon...

This game is so gorgeous with its 2.5D style and really fun. Super fast sonic-style gameplay with lots of different challenges and ways to tackle them. If you like platformers at all play it.

I haven't played a lot but it was, somehow, fun to understand.

Without a tutorial but only 2 buttons to control all animals it gives you a "here is a new animal, understand it by yourself" type of gameplay which isn't that bad.

The worst part of understanding the game was the main map (the big factory in which you enter the available maps), the inside map (which you select in the main map) and levels (that you find inside the map). Since you can't go back to the main map unless you go back to the start of the map you get inside it gets a little tricky about where you exactly are and you are supposed to do.

After 3rd map I can tell for sure you have enough understanding about the game, which includes: how to get blue gems and medals (complete, killing, no dying, speedrun and secret).
After the 4th map you understand what is going on in the game lore (if we can call it like that).

Visuals and music is really nice, you get used to animals very quickly once you obtain them, not to mention the local-cooperative is hell but sooooo entertaining to play.

final mention about how hard it is, you don't know the checkpoints while playing levels, and there are levels that doesn't have checkpoints, they are challenging, fun and always give new mechanics in gameplay.

Boss fights are a little easier than expected but still will bring you a couple of attempts to understand how to properly finish the boss.

With all the above is up to you if you would like to play the game or not.

I'm in the middle about my view on this game, but I'm leaning more towards a no. This game has good visuals and music. But the visuals are quite distracting and the controls are so slippery. And there are times where your character just starts sliding for no reason. Also, there is no tutorial. Even though the you would expect the controls to be simple, there are 2 buttons that I have no clue on what they do. So if you want a challenge and you're used to god awful controls, get this game. But if you are more of a casual player, I would not recommend this game.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. If you had told me, "Hey, try this platformer where only 1/5 characters jump," I might be skeptical, but Mekazoo makes it work, and makes it fun. You have 5 unlockable characters who have different strengths, and you will complete parts of levels with some combination of one or two characters at a time. The armadillo dashes quickly, the frog uses his tongue to swing and attack, the wallaby jumps, the bear climbs, and the bird flies.

Luckily they never make you choose between all 5 at the same time (I was initially afraid of how that would be accomplished properly). It's rather elegant, because you basically just move, activate their specialty move, or switch to your other character available to traverse the level, completing acrobatics, taking out enemies, or finding objects. In fact, the levels feel very different based upon which characters are activated at the same time.

For instance, one of the specialty badges you earn to unlock bosses and challenge levels (not technically required), is by finding a secret character combination switcher in the level which requires you to traverse parts of the level with a different combination of powers than you may have done before (sometimes it's more fun the other way too).

The plot drives the action, and keeps things moving with no dialogue (very nicely done, and even has a twist), the graphics are fantastic (although I had to disable g-sync and go high fps only, still ran at 120+ so not that big a deal), colors pop, and you earn specialty costumes and colors by earning gems through combat and collection.

Very surprising gem, and I hope there's another game like it!

I gotta go with "no" here. Maybe this is a rough gem, who knows, but my god I think it's frustrating. I liked the old platformers a la Donkey Kong. You set out on a mission, you had a clear objective, the controls were simple enough and EVERY level was unique and memorable. To this day I can pretty much think back to ALL the levels of DK 1 through 3 and have nostalgia feelings (or replay them on an emulator. If those games could just be remastered for PC...ah shucks). So, I say to mysel, hey, this looks pretty neat, but...it isn't. At least not for me.

The graphics, while not ugly, are kinda wonky and very busy/bright. Think about Sonic in 3D, but with more neon. The game starts off with telling you nothing. Just a "press x" notification, then you're off in your Armadillo and have NO clue what to do. See, Mekazoo puts you (gradually) in the shoes of different animals, each with ONE specific power. And that's it. There's no jump button for instance, the Armadillo for example just curls up and accelerates? Or bounces? Or both? I really couldn't figure that one out all too well. And then you also kinda need to press the button again mid-air to activate the "cannons" that shoot you upwards? I am so confused...

It got a bit better after somehow defeating the 1st boss and unlocking the frog. See, the frog is FUN! And it was almost enough to keep me going, but then the game just throws you into level after level, telling you how much you suck. And you can only access those levels via some sort of hub, but then you need to physically go to each level, instead of selecting them via an overview map for instance... I feel no connection to the game world. Why am I there? What am I doing? Am I supposed to have fun NOW!? I don't know, it feels extremely bare bones and unfinished.

Apparently the other animals you unlock can smash through things, jump and fly indefinitely, but I've read in another review that in order to even be able to fight them and unlock them you need to collect gears by beating levels in a certain way (in a certain time, kill all enemies of a type, etc.) and I can't be bothered with that, which is why I'm requesting a refund. Speaking of enemies...they're pretty indistinct and I have no idea what's going on.

This game needed a few more months in the oven and someone who actually knows something about user friendly design... do away with the hub, unlock all animals gradually but not behind "grind walls", make the levels longer, more varied and more memorable, instead of just shoving a bunch of them into the game. And for crying out loud add a tutorial for each creature that actually teaches you what you can do... and while you're at it, fix the floaty controls. Take a look at Rayman for example. That's a quality platformer. This, sadly, is not. Interesting concept, mediocre execution.

sometimes glitchy and for some reason doesn't feel smooth even at high framerate on G-Sync monitor, still very playable and enjoyable game, it takes a while to get used to controls and there is no real tutorial so you have to figure out how every character's ability works by yourself.
Decent amount of content, well balanced difficulty and awesome soundtrack. Game encourages you to play each stage multiple times with different objectives which is nice. Gameplay is very dynamic with only two buttons used (action and character switch) but it's a lot of fun.

I really enjoy the swapping mechanic of Mekazoo, it allows for such a diverse range of play, and great ways to solve puzzles. The soundtrack is also perfect for the game and encourages you to keep playing.

I came across this game almost by accident, which is odd, because most games of this quality are reasonably well-known. I expected to play a short little budget game, and what I got is a full-fledged, well-polished, full-length platformer. If you like platformers, you're going to like this.

It looks like most reviews here are good, but have a gripe or two in them, which I think is very representitive of the game overall. There are a couple of moments where you'll go "they could have done this better," but when you reach the end, you're going to feel like it was time well-spent.

Malheureusement, on se retrouve vite à pester contre les contrôles, notamment ceux du kangourou. L'agencement des hubs n'est pas non plus très bien pensé, amenant un peu à touner en rond.
Les mondes en eux même manquent de personnalités et l'impossibilité de rebrousser chemin alors qu'il faut collecter des éléments devient frustrantes.

Mekazoo's got a few janky moments, some minor design missteps, and all the other foibles that usually reveal a game to be the work of dedicated indie devs rather than a soulless, multi-million dollar corporation. If you can look past a few slight game mechanic design quirks though, there's an insane amount of high-quality content hidden under the hood of Mekazoo. It's Sonic meets Donkey Kong spread across five quirky animals and five creative worlds, all of which are drenched in a neon day-glo color palette. It's hard as nails and fun as hell. It sticks with you, to boot; I've been humming the game's soundtrack for hours now. Support these devs! They had to dissolve their studio due to this game underperforming, and in no world should a marvelous title like this fail saleswise when utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like SWBF2 sells off the shelves. Please, support these creators and show that there's still a home for original, heartfelt games in this industry.

Honestly it's sad how little attention this game has gotten. I only know about it from a little segment dunkey did on it (https://youtu.be/wTXRMBoc4Qs?t=213) and his opinion is pretty much spot on with mine. It's not a *perfect* game, but it's a very solid 2.5D platformer with a unique theme and creative set of mechanics. And that soundtrack, oh man. It's quirky and different, but it pulls it off so, so well.

Interesting concept and decent visual aesthetics and soundtrack, however just like most unity games gameplay is often sloppy, buggy, and inconsistent, which is a huge detriment to gameplay because of its higher difficulty in later stages. It often feels like you're constantly fighting the lack of polish. Each animal needed at least 10-20 more hours of development.

It's one of those "I wish there was a third option somewhere in the middle" when recommending a game. I'm putting it on "not recommended", but only because of the few issues I had. If they don't look like something you'd be bothered by, go ahead and play it. It's not like it's overpriced. Far from it.

It's a pretty enough game with decent audio and the level design and platforming is fun enough (although rather challenging later on), but there's a few kinks that made it frustrating for me towards the end. The first is that the controls aren't always as great as they should be. When playing as the frog, the length of your tongue is rather deceiving and your direction of momentum is also something a bit off at times. At least for me, could be I just suck at it of course. The kangaroo needs some getting used to as well and the climbing for the bear can be rather glitchy in my experience.

My biggest frustration however, and the reason why I didn't finish it (I played up until the boss level in the Metropolis area) is the content gating. In order to access the bosses, you need a certain amount of "gears" which are like badges for completing a level fast, without dying and killing all certain types of enemies in it. If you just finish all the levels without really bothering with these optional objectives, you can't fight the bosses right away. For the third area I had about 4 gears short to be able to fight the boss which I got with some extra effort, but now I'm 7 short for the one in the Metropolis area. And honestly, I can't be bothered. I'm not good enough to complete the levels fast or without dying and the enemies you need to kill can be tough to find or you only get one chance to reach them in one run. So I can't fight the boss now (and I think he's the last one). So I can't finish the game. I don't really get why that gating is there. It makes no sense. Why not let mediocre people also enjoy the full game?

So if you're good at platformers and are used to speedruns and the like, you might have a better time than I did. But I think it's a damn shame that you kinda have to do those things.

This game has one element that really undermines its enjoyment value:
The controls are, kind of, broken and buggy as heck. Just like in, so many ways it's not even worth listing them all. And I've had other fun glitchy stuff happen like getting stuck in a wall, a cannon not firing leaving me stuck & having to restart a level, the camera not following me through a tube making it impossible to tell where I am, an entire chunk of the level visually deloading because I went back to a previous checkpoint and then died, basically the works.

And the bonus levels are a very, very mixed bag; a few of them are clever, but the "level in a room" ones all suck, without fail. And there's one with the bird where you're escaping from rising lava, and the level is supposed to be designed like one of those chase levels from rayman origins where if you just keep going you'll be fine, except... it never quite works out that way and makes everything way harder than it should be. I did like the last bonus level at the very least, though there were a few bits that were kind of meh, but like, as a whole it's cool.

And really, the level design in general is quite good? It makes good use of all five characters and never really feels stale or repetitive, each world has its own gimmicks to keep things fresh and there's 15 possible character inventories making for a lot of interesting pairings. Really, that mechanic on its own makes for a solid game premise and it's executed decently well. Just clearing through the stages normally is never that much of a challenge, but oh boy is every stage jam packed with other stuff to do. Getting through the level in under a time limit, getting through without dying, killing all of a specific enemy type, finding the secret switcher that gives you different characters and forces you to play parts of the level a different way, collecting enough orbs to earn gems, finding the hidden gems... they get a lot of mileage out of these levels but the different ways you play each level make it so it doesn't really get old.

And for a $10 platformer there's a lot of content here - heck, even for its original $20 asking price the content is very, very solid. 15 levels that probably take 30-45 minutes each to fully complete, 10 tough as nails bonus levels, 5 boss fights (which, admittedly, are not great boss fights on the whole, but far from the worst I've seen too), even some secrets to find in the hub levels. The game's soundtrack is also pretty jammin', a lot of the hub levels play off one main theme but every individual level gets its own song too. And it's visually beautiful, though I had to turn down the graphics settings to get it to run decently at all - does not seem too well-optimized.

But. And this is a big but. The game can be really frustrating for reasons that don't feel like the player's fault. The frog's tongue can just do whatever the hell it wants and getting the swinging physics to cooperate can be a pain. The armadillo is kind of broken in a good way in general but sometimes he will just not boost in the right direction. I have no clue why. Especially when going up walls, sometimes the same inputs will get me a boost up, or a boost down (the latter usually killing me). The kangaroo's controls are really awkward to get a hang of but probably controls the best out of all the characters, I certainly had the most fun with it and doing wall jump shenanigans. The bear is BROKEN AS HECK and basically feels like 100% glitching out everywhere. Most of the times I got stuck in a wall were due to this pest. And he can latch onto walls from way far away. Sometimes has trouble latching onto enemies to kill, it feels inconsistent. He's slow too. Don't enjoy the bear at all. The bird is mostly solid though sometimes he will stop moving fast even though I don't let go of the action button, and the amount of rebound you get when taking damage or bouncing off walls is a bit excessive. On top of that, something that applies to every character is that after you get hit you just can't interact with the floating platforms at all; frog can't grab them, armadillo will just fall through them, same with the roo. Doesn't affect the bear or bird too much but it's just a general nuisance.

Basically, at the end of the day: controls are bad, level design is generally pretty good, presentation is great, replay value is high, entertainment value as a whole is middling. I would give this a meh rating if it existed on steam but as it stands I think there's enough to like here to recommend it, even at full price, though I can't say 100%ing it is worth it in the end. I'm just really stubborn.

亮点：
操作手感很独特，控制键只有方向键、鼠标左键角色特性，右键切换人物。

某种意义上让牛顿很满意（犰狳和青蛙都是不能在空中按上下左右控制方向的），然后这两个角色的特性显著不同，[spoiler]犰狳是贴墙的时候按左键冲刺获得动能然后冲那些转角或者弹射器来位移或攻击，青蛙则是左键吐舌头来把自己拉向某些装置或者钩在什么东西上面，然后用方向键摇摆获得动能，最后通过再次点击左键松开舌头把自己甩出去[/spoiler]。比较期待后面三个角色有什么不同特性。

缺陷：
毫无教程或者类似的东西，需要自行在已知键位的基础上摸索每个角色的操作方式，虽然角色的引入关卡的难度还算是层层递进，但是突然上手起来各种稀里糊涂……

总结：
就开场而言，平台动作良作，7/10，后续推进之后可能还会再来改评价

The description is pretty accurate. Cannons, bounce pads, wall jumps, ground pounding, spinning in a ball, climbing, and tag team action. These are elements of platforming games of the 1990s. If you grew up during that era of gaming, chances are this game will seem like a trip down memory lane, but with somewhat more modern visuals.

状況に合わせて使用する動物を切り替えながら進む横スクロールアクション。
ソニックやスーパードンキーコングにインスパイアされたゲームと知り購入。
流れるBGMはデビッド・ワイズ氏の楽曲にかなり影響を受けている印象で良曲が多い。

肝心のゲームプレイはあまり快適とは言えず、操作性はソニックに近く動作がピーキーで非常に扱いづらい。
また、タイムアタックや特定の敵の撃破数などやりこみ要素が豊富だが、
後半はそういった条件を満たさなければ先に進めない仕様となり、強制的にやり込まざるを得なくなるのが苦痛。

豊富なアイディアによって作られたゲームである事は伝わってくるが、残念ながらその多くの要素がストレスに繋がっていると感じてしまった。

This may end up being a very long review, but I really liked this game so my apologies for the length, and also a heads-up in case you wanted to play it totally blind - I go over some details like level organization within worlds.

[h1]Overall[/h1]
Excellent puzzle platformer. Very challenging. It could have used a little more polish, but I am thoroughly impressed by it as I haven't had this kind of fun since games like Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Galaxy.

If I had to rate the game out of 10, a strong 7/10, but could have been a strong candidate for getting 10/10.

[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
The game is a 2D platformer with a plane that wraps around a 3D world, and you are a mechanical organism that has access to up to two animal forms, each with their own mode of movement and special ability. Some animal forms offer tools that make some situations easier, making weaving the forms together important when you have access to two forms, but having a deeper understanding of each form is important when you have access to only one form.

This has a bit of its own learning curve (I got a little frustrated every so often at first, but it was the fun kind, and I can be impatient at times), and the levels do a reasonable job of providing tools to learn how to use them. Some patience will help since some of the levels do emphasize an animal's weakness more than they emphasize their strengths. Eventually, you might even come up with some bizarre but very helpful tricks of your own!

I found these apects to be like puzzle-solving in a platformer context, which provided a deeper look into mechanics that are within that wonderful "easy-to-learn, hard-to-master" zone.

The structure of each world is the same, presenting 3 "normal" levels that try to give an up-to-date representation of what you have unlocked so far (some levels having extra features from later unlocks!)

The checkpoints are generally very generous, so the game is not so much about rigid definitions of perfect play (not to say that games like Super Meat Boy are bad, unnecessary, or "fun because it's hard", that's just not the kind of game this is) as it is about solving the "puzzle" right in front of you. There are other objectives you can complete that do introduce elements like this, however - but that's up to you and the skills for it come naturally with play.

Enemies had a very strange place in this game. They varied from harmless slugs, to robot hornets that shoot stingers, robot-enhanced slugs with snail shells that shoot many projectiles, and many others. Overall, they felt like they had a strange place in the game where they felt like they didn't matter that much until they randomly killed you at some point. To put it one way, it almost works against the game because it feels like an inclusion that was expected of them rather than designed to be there, but in another way it works with the game because it keeps the platforming part feeling purer.

The boss designs were challenging, but still very fun. The bosses are mechanical organisms of a similar nature to you, but they are much larger and attack like large, lumbering giants (which they are), and they were interesting variants on the puzzles that the platforming had to offer for you to solve.

There are bugs here and there, but they are difficult to reproduce (good for a general play experience, but unfortunate for the developer).

[h1]Graphics[/h1]
Graphics are vibrant and rich. It feels energetic and lively.

I loved how this game looks, and I loved looking at it. Exploring the levels always felt like a fresh new experience. Initially I told myself I'd get 100% of the gears (similar to Mario 64's stars), but the art style is beautiful and getting 100% of the gems (currency to buy aesthetic character customization) was a nice reason to have another playthrough of all the levels with a bit more patience and attention to detail.

However, that is not to say that I had no issues. There are some parts where the camera being a perspective camera would lead to some difficulty judging distances towards the edges of the screen (far left and far right), and times when enemy projectiles were nearly (or totally in some cases) invisible due to bright lights in the background.

The game also runs strangely (some objects will move in a bit of a jagged fashion) at higher refresh rates, but it still looks very fluid at 60fps.

[h1]Sound[/h1]
The Quiggles made an unforgettable soundtrack for this game and The Good Mood Creators made an excellent choice in this department. I hadn't felt a game's soundtrack that was this memorable or energetic and so fitting of where it appeared since Super Mario Galaxy. There are a lot of "nice" songs, but there were some great songs that made me feel happier that I bought the soundtrack separately - more of my support going towards good people.

It appears as though every level (not sure about the final world) has one song for each of its main 3 levels, one song for its boss, and one song shared between the two "challenge" levels that seem to be recommended after the boss (some of them have higher unlock requirements than the boss).

The levels had very modern music which was very refreshing and energizing to play along with, and the bosses had retro music built on a very modern formula which was very exciting to play along with. Overall for the music, the music does a very good job of maintaining the tone for that level. Earlier levels have much more flare in their music to catch your attention and keep you excited to trundle through, then some levels have more chill music for the bits which might need a bit more thinking, some others might have some very basic but strong rhythms to tell you that this section is going to be quite a challenge, and bosses have exciting songs to get you amped to take on a serious challenge.

The sound-effects associated with actions are also very strong. They feel lively and appropriate for the very strange context, without sounding awkwardly cartoonish or goofy (even when the panda mode is flailing its arms about to grab something to save its life).

What I think could have been done better is maybe audio queues to help with situations where the visuals can't keep up as well. Enemies do make shooting sounds when they fire projectiles, but it's rather quiet and can be buried under the sounds that your character makes, leading to an unexpected death.

[h1]Summary[/h1]
It's not a perfect game, but it is a very strong game. I haven't had this kind of fun in a very long time, and I want this game to be successful because it's not often I see a game that feels like it was made with so much love and so much passion.

Very few games make me constantly adjust how much of the game I want to complete to 100%. Originally I only wanted to finish each level once, but then I ended up getting 100% of the gears on all levels, but I found myself wanting to enjoy the levels, the graphics, and the music so much more that I also got 100% of the gems on all levels.

To the people of The Good Mood Creators: What you've created is very special, and it is some excellent work.

I'd love to see more Mekazoo in future.

As of writing this, I have only played this for an hour, but I can already tell this is my kind of game. Like other reviews haves said, it's a speed-based action platformer, much like classic Sonic games. The art is very bright, bouncy, and adorable, and the music is nothing short of fantastic! It reminds me of the music from Crash Bandicoot (which I'm just a bit of a fan of). I can't play this game without smiling. It's just fantastic; I'm in love with this game. The developers weren't kidding when they chose their company name--they truly are The Good Mood Creators!

I have never written a steam review before, but I JUST have to for this game. There's a lot to say about this game, so grab a drink and prepare for a small novel.

Let's start with the gameplay. I, personally, really enjoy it, but I can see it getting a little frustrating sometimes. As a platformer, Mekazoo will have you traverse a variety of levels as various animals with different abilities,e ach with strengths and weaknesses.
All of the animal's abilities work very fluently in accordance with the level design, but I found that the Wallaby was hard to control at times which made me a little frustrated. I would be ready to land on a platform next to a wall and find myself accidently barely touching the base of the wall, causing me to bounce off and plummet to my death. The Wallaby cannot hop up ramps, which is a little annoying, but not too bad.
Overall, Mekazoo has solid platforming action that is made fantastic by the level design being based around the animals you are given to work with. It is really satisfying to get flawlessly get through a part of the level as you get better with each animal.

For the story...well, Mekazoo does not really have one. I really don't mind the lack of story, though (I am playing this game for the gameplay). It's just a regular "go and save all of your buddies" type of games. However, the some levels tell a story of their own, like how some of the forest levels are being chopped up by the similar forces that kidnapped your other animal friends. If you play games for a major, epic story, look elsewhere.

The characters (i.e. the animals) are not that deep either, but I love them. They are cute and happy, which is a refreshing change-up from most of the dark, dirty games that are put out nowadays. You can customize your characters with different colors and skins which you unlock with gems that you can gather, giving the animals more personality (I like the "Fantasy" costume which dresses the Wallaby up as a wizard).

And finally...the best for last..the music.
Oh. My. Gosh. The music.
I do not know what they did, but the music IS AMAZING! Like, Old RareWare-level amazing.
I have played a lot of this games in my life, but the soundtrack for Mekazoo is EASILY one of the best. While it is not as expansive or elegant as some other games, each song suits the level it is played in so SO well. Even if I got stuck on a part of a level the music would keep me determined to beat it. Some tracks are better than others, but they are all absolute mastercrafts. I cannot stress this enough, but the music is INSANELY good.

Ultimately, with the great platforming control, smooth level design, beautiful level artwork, and the powerful, fitting, memerable music, I would recommend this game to anyone who has been waiting for a new, original platformer to come out. It is fast, it is challenging, it is satisfying, and it is DEFINITELY worth the time and money put into it.

TL;DR:
It's a VERY good game with stunning levels, fluid gameplay, and AWESOME music. I recommend it for platformer fans.

This game has its little missteps every now and then, but it's a definite gaming experience, nonetheless.

[b]One important thing to note:[/b] This game does not have tutorials. It doesn't explain its controls or conventions in any way, shape, or form. That being said, you are [u]not[/u] expected to know the game right away. You will have plenty of time and comfort to practice and figure things out at your own pace.

Personally, I quite enjoy this. I think it's the perfect amount of hand-holding that games should do: Don't go out of the way to explain, but give the player what they need to learn for themselves.

I never expect Mekazoo would turn out to be marvellous. It's now under my favourite platformer games along with classics like Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong

First impressions of Mekazoo leave me feeling uncertain. Locating world select and finding each level inside are time consuming, then later finding out I need to replay the levels to collect trophies, as certain amount of trophies is required to unlock next levels. The wallaby boss level was also “too easy”, it got me confused how I defeated it in the first place.

Sometimes character can get stuck mid-air and I was frustrated enough having to restart whole level in the middle of earning trophies. It also leads me thinking why there’s no restart previous checkpoint option.

But thankfully these are my only problems in Mekazoo. Everything else: love it!

Gameplay and levels are their greatest winner. Controls isn’t overly difficult since each animal has its own move, but it’s required to recognise when to switch character and use different move precisely, else making a mistake or mistiming would kill you. Normally themes such as jungle, desert and ice can bore me as it gets overused in various platform games, but here they mixed it up with their own Mekaworld lit with neon colours, gears & tubes.

Each level is unique on its own: 1. there’s never two levels that looked similar and quickly noticed that 2: music is also different every level.

The fact that creators of Mekazoo made 36 catchy, hybrid electronic-jazz soundtracks is mindboggling, and they’re willing to sell their soundtracks on Steam! I never become tired of them, (instead being stuck into my head) given mekatrillion of replays while earning all the achievements.

I normally don’t 100% a game because I hated the nature of replaying levels, but the game must’ve injected me with drugs and got me addicted.

The gameplay is excessively fun, using momentum between animals and levels along with memorable music would immediately rate as a near perfect meka-game, however I can’t ignore its faults and hell it was frustrating sometimes.

I came across this one while searching for good [b]platformers[/b] during the winter sale, and I am extremely impressed. At this point, I've only been playing the game for a little over an hour and a half, but I have absolutely seen enough to make a positive recommendation.

[h1]Initial Impression[/h1]

So many of the platformers being released are very poorly done, but this one, like the [i]Giana[/i], [i]Ori[/i], and [i]Shantae[/i] games, is among the cream of the crop. The [b]soundtrack[/b] is appropriately understated, not annoying or intrusive, and the [b]graphics[/b] are absolutely stunning.

[h1]Controls[/h1]

Mekazoo sports [b]full controller support[/b], and the controls are extremely [i]responsive[/i]. As a gamer who prefers to use an XBox 360 or Steam Controller over mouse and keyboard, the responsiveness and consistency of controls is at the very top of my list when evaluating a game. Like some of the other games mentioned, this one has [b][i]quick-switch mechanics[/i][/b]. You can't enjoy, or even complete, a game like that if the controls aren't responsive, and this game functions exactly as it should.

[h1]Gameplay[/h1]

It's very challenging, as you switch from one character to another, each with unique abilities, to navigate the levels. The [b]achievement hunters[/b] out there are going to love this one, and so will those who are looking for both casual and [i]"hard as nails"[/i] platformers. There are challenges within the levels, such as killing all enemies, finding hidden gems, or navigating the level without a single death. These challenges are going to appeal to the gamers looking for a real challenge, while casual gamers are going to love that they can play right alongside at a lesser degree of difficulty. Character death takes you back to the last checkpoint, so no harm no foul if you're not a permadeath fanatic.

For those who are directionally-challenged, like myself, look out, because you're in for a [i]wild ride[/i]. There are many twists, turns, areas, and mechanics within the game that shoot your character across the screen to another part of the level. I can't keep it straight, and that makes for a whole other set of challenges. You can still complete the level without having visited every nook and cranny, but [i]oh, what a tempting challenge it is to try[i].

[h1]Conclusion[/h1]

Mekazoo is an awesome game, a [b]hidden gem[/b] that I came across almost by accident. Because of that, I wanted to get an intitial review in right away so that others can find this game and enjoy it as much as I am. [b][i]So, get crackin[/i][/b]; I'm lost in a level somewhere, and you just might be my ticket out. :)

This game looked very charming and cute and I really wanted to like it. I love platformers and picked it up during the sale and downloaded it and it will not work on my computer. I know I don't have a beast of a computer but it can handle games like Witcher 3 and other bigger filed games with ease. I am usually not the type that complains about framerate drops but my framerate at the lowest quality of graphics was constantly less than 10 frames a second. My file must also be corrupted as well because it started me out on the THIRD level with no opening cutscene, no armadillo and no explanation of controls. I don't usually make negative reviews but I thought I should announce this bad experience I had to the devs so they know and can fix this issue. I really wanted to love this game but I sadly have to request a refund because I could use that money on other games.

Well im very surprised that Mekazoo turned into this awesome since i played it at the Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.
First, the music. It might remind you at the good old Donkey Kong or barely every good Rare-Game music for example.
At the next Point, we got a very competitive and sometimes a little frustrating platformer. Thats good, i think no jump n run game should be too easy ;)
But the best feature in my opinion is that you can play with your friends in Co-op.
Every time you think its a good idea to switch to your animal (which all of them have different abilitys) you might f**k up the whole planing of your Co-player, or even work together to get more points and some more collectibles.
I loved it when i got to play it at the Gamescom booth, now that i can play it at home with my friends, its even more adictable.
So heres my advice, just get yourself this awesome piece of gaming history! ;D

I want to like this game, but I can't play it. Not because of any technical problems, but because the visuals are too loud and busy for me to follow what's going on. For a fast paced action platformer like this game, that's one of the worst problems to have.

It could also stand to do a better job of teaching the player how the powers work. I also don't know how I beat the Bouncer boss. It just sort of happened while I was trying to figure out what to do.

Aside from those issues and slightly wonky controls, I don't really have a problem with this game. But I didn't get to play far enough to see if it had other problems.

Well - I think it's a good platformer and I enjoy it. I love the way you hot swap animals - this opens totally new ways of playing and of course difficulty. I think this is something the game designers are quite proud of as I could preview and see on GC 2016.
Though it's a game especially people who were deep into Sonic will surely enjoy, I have extreme difficulties to get into it and feel a "Wow-effect". It doesn't catch me. This may be because I feel there is not even a small glimpse of a story to tell. The levels are briliant, but they don't have an overall story or theme holding them together. Most of the time I simply don't know my progress and WHY you swap animals or at least why am I doing this? I'm more into platformers with "worlds", "stories" and kind of epic climax. This is one of the biggest downs in Mekazoo: It simply misses immersion and story - as if the developers hadn't much resources to make a "complete game". If you like fast entertainment without much hassle, it's a good game. If you are more into games like Ori or Rayman this may disappoint you. I think in half a year I'll forget about this game, Anyway: Nice spare time killer. But to me it's not more than this. I had bigger expectations when I tested it on GC 2016.

My favorite game of PAX 2014 when I first found it, and now it's out! It plays like the newer Donkey Kong Country games but with more fluid controls and animal switching mechanics in place of the precision-heavy rolling of DKC.

I'm looking forward to trying to speedrun it, although the sheer amount of things to collect and multiple paths per level to traverse makes it seem like replaying levels is a must. Also, the game suffers from a few bugs with collision and non-deterministic state, though these are likely due to the Unity physics engine and don't impact the game significantly.

Definitely give it a try if you're looking for a fun, flow-inducing, just-the-right-amount-of-challenging platformer!

Great visuals that give the game unique look and feel compared to other platformers. Some people may not like the neon colored setting, but it actually fits with the game's theme.

Great soundtrack that evokes the feel of retro games era with its catchy beats.

Control really takes time getting used to, especially because each animal moves differently in very distinct ways. The levels become much more enjoyable once the player has mastered the controls.

Smart implementation of co-op system that encourages teamwork.

Balanced difficulty for both casual and hardcore players alike. Casual players can sit back and enjoy the story levels while hardcore players may prefer the challenge levels which are really hard, requiring precise control and timing.

Very polished level design that offers high replayability. Each level can be replayed with different goals such as speed run, finding secret gems, collecting all small gems, and using different animals to reach the goal. Each of these goals requires the player to figure out the different routes within the same level.

The game is short, with 26 levels in total. Each level can be completed within 5 minutes. However, each level is visually distinct and offers high replayability, making the game's price worth the short duration.

This game is fantastic. I've had this game on my radar for over a year, patiently waiting for its release. I have to say it's extremely fun.

It may feel different controlwise to other platformers - at least for the first hour I had a bit of trouble adjusting. Do stick with it as the game's movement complexity is arguably it's best feature.

Probably the two most important things this platformer can offer in 2016 are: a distinct/unique gameplay feature and a control scheme to deliver said feature well. I never get bored with the simplest platformers when control is top notch, but a lot of players really do get bored of simple gameplay. Mekazoo gives players wanting more complexity something really special.

There are 5 characters unlocked over time that possess a single 'move' or defining mechanic and this really makes this game different. As characters are unlocked, navigation around expansive environments is achieved by your choice of 2 animals at one time, that can be switched on the fly. You essentially just experiment to see what you can do. Once you get the hang of it the flow feels amazing. It takes time but it really gives the platformer genre a bit of a twist that is very welcome for those tired of simpler titles.

Of course a great mechanic needs solid control. I think Mekazoo delivers here. Controls are fluid and quite free flowing (NOT little big planet - more N+ or, slighty floatier than super meat boy). I was worried that I'd find them too floaty but they work well. I can now effortlessly switch between, say, a tongue swinging frog and a kangaroo. It's still precise, just without the extreme agility within the tighter movement of say original megaman.

Overall it's a wonderful game, very fun, with great flowing motion that rewards effort to improve. Lovely to look at too. I really think that with enough attention this will be an important title for platformers in general.

Edit: Ive removed my one minor initial complaint as it's no longer relevant. I stated I lost view of my character in the depth of the lush environments. This doesn't happen if you decide on a colour you like for your animal that has higher contrast to the background. Character colour can be modified to various neon colours and combos.

Last thoughts after more hours logged and all characters unlocked - this game is special and fun. Polished, great level design for slow play or speedruns. Just an amazing addition to the genre. Thanks to The Good Mood Creators for such an awesome game.

Mekazoo is a fast past platformer driven by the concept of hot-swapping between different animals to complete each level, and it is fantastic. It takes a little bit to get used to the whole switching thing, but once you do, you will find that levels start flowing really smoothly. Graphically, Mekazoo has a really nice stylized enviornment going for it, and coupled with the 3D areas, it just looks gorgeous. The music in this game is something else, too, so I definitely recommend picking up the soundtrack if you intend to buy this game. Seriously go and listen to some tracks on youtube if you haven't already. Overall, as a diehard platformer fan, both of the more casual games like Mario, and the hardcore ones like the IWBTG fangames, Super Meat Boy, and Wings of Vi, I can highly recommend Mekazoo to anyone who just enjoys playing good platformers.

Mekazoo is an animal inspired game, but these are no ordinary critters. A frog that can use his tongue as a grappling hook, a panda that can climb, swing and butt ram obstacles, an armadillo that can curl up and race around levels, a wallaby that can super jump and a pelican that can fly indefinitely.

The story of Mekazoo starts as you wake up as the Armadillo and notice all your animal friends are missing and have been turned into enormous evil bosses. You must venture out into the bright lambent world of Mekazoo to save your furry compadres. And each time you do, you’ll unlock that animal for the duration of the game and be able to switch to them on the fly during gameplay.

[b]Gameplay[/b]
In Mekazoo, you’ll be swinging, rolling, hurling and swapping between your 5 mechanical friends for about 10-15 hours. The game consists of several worlds connected to the mother pod, and each is caked with a neon vibe of radiant colors, animation and atmosphere.

Most of the game is built around this idea of figuring out how to best utilize each animal's strengths, while swapping them out for more suitable partners that can cover up their obvious weaknesses. The panda is great for smashing down walls with its big bear ass to uncover new areas and secrets, but it can be a challenge to scale ground quickly and activating switches and spinning levers. That’s where Mr. frog jumps in to get the team over that obstacle. In other areas, you may choose the armadillo for its high ground speed, but to get to higher ground you might have to swap to your pelican friend to help you traverse the verticality easier.

The premise is simple, warm and welcomes you into the world with it’s natural progression of unlocking each character. Unlike some games that allow full access to abilities from the get go like Furi, for example, you’re drip fed your progression constantly and it feels rewarding to finally obtain all the animals and really get down to the meat of the game a few hours into the game.

[b]Opportunities[/b]
The problem comes in with the controls and that interactivity, however. Firstly, the controls take some time to adjust to. They feel floaty, and at first I felt like I was slinging myself madly across the screen... holding on for dear life trying to keep my momentum going. You feel this way because the game takes control away from you a lot...there are a ton of contraptions that launch you into new sections of the level and pipes that automatically traverse you across the map.

It’s difficult to distinguish what the player can do vs what kind of automation will happen in lieu of this. The problem is...There’s very little help in the way of introduction or tutorial, so it’s trial and error for the most part. Which objects can I swing on with my frog tongue? Why can I spin around some objects 360 degrees, but only 180 on others? When I step on this bouncy thing, will the camera view change, or will I just bounce up and down?

I would also have loved to see a little exposition, and an explanation of how the worlds are connected to the hub, or pod as it's called in this game. You’re thrown into the game without much context at all, and it can feel disjointed and hard to figure out what screens are connected to the levels and where you should be heading. It definitely lets you figure that out.

[b]Verdict[/b]
But in light of those minor setbacks, Mekazoo is a great game, and a warm homage to the likes of Sonic, Donkey Kong and Rayman. It’s one of those rare platformers that comes around and says, this genre is still cool. And it is. And for 20 bucks, I say hell yes to this one because it’s a blast.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes platformers. I first found out about it from videogame dunkey and have been curious about it ever since.

Individually, each of the animals you control are unique, but very simple and straightforward, making them easy to play. The real fun of the game is that you have the ability to swap between these animals at instant speed.

The levels are cleverly designed to incorporate opportunities for each of the animals to shine, but if you prefer one animal over another, you're able to stay in that form for the bulk of the levels. Completionists will love this game because it gets more and more "mechanically" intensive, but newcomers and filthy casuals will still find a home simply beating the levels and enjoying the beautiful colors.
