It's an hard recommendation; the overall mixed rating is quite fair.
Limited to visual aspect, it's a masterpiece: even so many years after its original release, I'm still impressed by the pixel art, looking out of the golden years of the Amiga and Mega Drive, including a CRT effect. There is a wide variety of enemy sprites, all finely detailed and animated, and the protagonist presents subtle details like looking back or stumbling from time to time. The special attacks, some filling half of the screen, are also great to look at, and while mostly static most bosses are fairly impressive as well. Really, I can't stop staring at all the small details, like the specific animations for damage from fire or falling into a bottomless pit, or the map screen that also anticipates you will see a nice variety of backgrounds as well, also not all in a single run as some levels have got two exits.
The gameplay, however, is another story. Even if it was a passion project, I recall the developer admitting he's more of an artist than a maker of games, and I'd say it shows. Level design is quite simple, as stages are developed only horizontally, and there are several really frustrating pixel-perfect jumps when you less expect them. One of the final stages has got a small platform added in an update because it was realized the jump there was almost impossible.
Biggest design oversight is not much that the character is defenseless by default and must collect the sword attack as a power-up, it's the fact such sword is not present in all stages; in fact, you may find yourself going for two or three stages without finding one, forced to only avoid enemies, while some of them have hitboxes that may even force taking damage to pass them.
In the end, I decided to go for an upvote with reservation thanks to the stages being short, which compensates the frustrating elements, a level select unlocked after completing that allows to easily see unexplored levels without having to redo the whole game, the low price (I've seen much worse games asking much more) and last but not least an ending that may feel edgy at first but when you think a moment about it, makes a lot of sense.
Mastema: Out of Hell is a retro-inspired action platformer developed by Oscar Celestini and published by Forever Entertainment S. A., and it positions itself firmly as a love letter to the unforgiving 16-bit era of side-scrolling games. From its opening moments, the game establishes a bleak and oppressive atmosphere, casting the player into the depths of Hell with no exposition-heavy introduction or guiding hand. You awaken nameless and disoriented, driven only by survival and the instinct to push forward through hostile environments packed with demonic enemies, deadly traps, and relentless platforming challenges. This minimalist narrative approach works in the game’s favor, letting the environment and moment-to-moment gameplay communicate its themes of isolation, punishment, and perseverance.
Visually, Mastema: Out of Hell embraces classic pixel art aesthetics with bold colors, chunky sprites, and a visual language reminiscent of early console action titles. While the graphical fidelity is intentionally modest, the art direction succeeds in creating a consistent and memorable vision of Hell that feels more stylized than realistic. Lava-filled caverns, crumbling stone platforms, infernal machinery, and grotesque demonic foes populate over fifty levels, each designed to test reflexes and spatial awareness. The environments rarely feel decorative; instead, every screen is constructed as a mechanical challenge, with hazards and enemy placements designed to punish hesitation and reward precision.
Gameplay revolves around straightforward platforming fundamentals: running, jumping, attacking, and reacting quickly to environmental threats. The simplicity of the controls reflects the game’s retro inspirations, but this also places a heavy burden on level design to maintain engagement. Throughout the campaign, players gain access to different weapons that alter attack patterns and provide brief moments of variety, though the core mechanics remain consistent from start to finish. Combat is functional rather than elaborate, serving primarily as another obstacle layered onto the already demanding platforming. Encounters often require careful timing and positioning rather than brute force, especially when multiple enemies and environmental hazards overlap.
Difficulty is one of the defining traits of Mastema: Out of Hell, and it is unafraid to frustrate players in pursuit of its old-school identity. Instant-death traps, narrow jumps, and tightly spaced hazards are common, demanding patience and repetition. Progress frequently comes through trial and error, and while checkpoints help reduce excessive backtracking, the game still expects players to learn from failure and adapt. For fans of punishing platformers, this can be deeply satisfying, turning each cleared section into a small victory. For others, the difficulty can feel uneven, especially when compounded by occasionally stiff movement or imprecise collision detection, which can make certain deaths feel unfair rather than instructive.
Boss encounters provide a welcome change of pace, emphasizing pattern recognition and endurance over raw reflexes. These fights are visually distinct and mechanically more focused, often requiring players to learn attack sequences and exploit brief openings. While not overly complex, they serve as effective milestones that break up the linear progression and reinforce the game’s themes of persistence against overwhelming odds. The sense of accomplishment after defeating a boss is one of the game’s strongest emotional payoffs, particularly given the hostile nature of the levels leading up to them.
Audio design complements the visual and mechanical choices well, with music that channels retro chip-style compositions and darker melodic tones. The soundtrack reinforces the oppressive atmosphere without becoming monotonous, providing just enough energy to keep tension high during extended platforming segments. Sound effects are simple but effective, clearly communicating danger, enemy attacks, and player actions, which is crucial in a game where reaction time often determines success or failure.
Overall, Mastema: Out of Hell is a focused and unapologetic indie platformer that knows its audience. It does not attempt to modernize its design philosophy or soften its difficulty, instead leaning fully into the conventions of classic action platformers. This commitment gives the game a clear identity, even if it limits its broader appeal. For players who appreciate pixel art, demanding level design, and a stripped-down approach to gameplay, it offers a challenging descent through a stylized vision of Hell that rewards persistence and mastery. While its rough edges and rigid mechanics may alienate some, those willing to embrace its retro sensibilities will find a compact but intense experience that reflects both the passion and limitations of its indie roots.

Flop of a platformer, trying to be retro, old school cool makes it more cringe.
This game is just frustrating, period.
"Mastema: Out of Hell" is a fantastic looking platformer that suffers from problematic controls and some questionable game design choices, which makes the game more difficult than it needed to be. However, it is still very fun and playable and can be beaten if you are determined enough. I beat the game after sinking several hours into it.
GRAPHICS & SOUND
- The game looks beautiful. It's got some excellent 1990s era SNES-like pixel graphics. The background art, tilesets and sprites (especially the boss sprites) are gorgeous to look at.
-The game's music is fantastic and moody and goes well with the art and the overall theme of the game.
-The graphics and music make the game feel like it was actually made in the '90s, and not just another modern retro indie pixel art game.
GAMEPLAY
- The opening cutscene sold me the idea that the game is all about fighting demons with a fancy sword. But once the first level started, I felt a bit let down. It turned out that the game is a rather simple platformer where you basically jump across platforms, collect stuff and avoid dangers and enemies. It's still fun for the most part though!
WEAPON & COMBAT
- Remember that fancy sword I was talking about earlier? Well, you don't carry it by default. Rather, the sword is a temporary power-up that appears once every few levels. If you collect it, you get the ability to shoot swords like bullets! And even then, the "sword-bullet" doesn't travel very far and sometimes pressing the shoot button doesn't always spawn the "sword-bullet" thingy.
- If you lose a life, your sword is gone. And if the level you died in does not have a sword power-up, good luck to you because you'll need to resort to plan B: just jump over enemies and hope not to run into the big enemies, because you can't jump over them without getting hurt.
- Every now and then you'll find a power-up that lets you perform a special fiery attack, which destroys all enemies it comes into contact with. There are 5 types of special attacks: a tornade, a giant fireball that spins around you, a large monster from beneath and a bull that moves horizontally across the screen. I thought these were pretty cool!
COLLECTIBLES
- Shiny stones (collecting 100 of them grants you an extra life)
- Special attacks
- Health and lives
CONTROLS
- As for the controls, it's not the smoothest but believe me, it's not that bad.
- The controls are manageable for the most part. However, they feel inadequate whenever you're required to perform perfect jumps at the edge of platforms. This happened to me over and over.
- This, combined with the issues pertaining to the sword mentioned earlier makes the player feel incompetent and weak and may discourage them from playing further.
- Upon getting hit by an enemy, you aren't knocked back, which feels odd. But in hindsight, it might actually be a good thing because you don't have to worry about getting knocked off ledges in this game that already suffers from awkward controls.
LEVEL DESIGN
- There are 20 worlds, each broken up into three stages.
- Each stage is very short and can be beaten in a few minutes, which IMO is a good thing as it makes it easier to practice a stage and it.
- Dying mid stage takes you back to the start of the stage. A "game over" sends you back to the home screen where you can choose to continue where you left off.
- The level artworks (such as the tiles and background art) are nicely done and create a dark and other-worldly atmosphere.
- Each world has it's own unique visual theme to it - skeletons, insects, ice, fire, forest, dungeon etc which adds visual variety.
- Some levels have some very nice set pieces in the levels.
ENEMIES & BOSSES
- The enemies in the game are visually impressive and nicely animated. Unfortunately, they're also very dumb because enemy AI is non-existent. Most enemies simply patrol their areas and are completely indifferent to you even if you are standing close to them.
- The Bosses are large demons and monsters - an alien looking rhino, a demonic gorilla, a sphynx statue, a a giant demon head, to name a few. Bosses do pose a challenge, but they all have just 1 to 3 attacks and fairly small HPs and can be beaten once you figure out their patterns. One issue is that they don't have a health bar so you won't be able to keep track of their health status.
CONCLUSION
While the controls could be vastly improved, it still offers hours of entertainment. If you have a fondness for retro pixel art and the patience to master each level, then get this game!
The game is about precision jumping, the controls are terrible making this a terrible game.
No wonder only 5% of players have gotten through the 1st stage.
Nice

Finally finished this frustration simulator. The ending scene justifies why the controls are awful and the reason you shouldn't be able to escape hell. It has no replay value but cool pixel art and trading cards. 4/10 could be 7/10 with better jumping or edge climbing. Recommended only for those with high losing tolerance.

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
Mastema: Out of Hell, her biri 55'ten fazla oynanabilir seviyeye sahip 20 farklı konum içerir.
The game looks better in steam preview video, the actual game play tells otherwise. Definitely game from MS.DOS gen, i mean MS.DOS 3.0
The controls are not smooth, especially on the jump, and its not fun. I not sure why i need to collect the diamond, and when you are death, you lost everything you collected, you can't hit any mob at all!!!
Sorry, gonna refund you with poor graphic, control and game reset rules, even you cost less than a penny

Well, just like pretty much everyone else says, this is a title that nails looks and sound aspect of games of yesteryear, but is ultimately ruined by unresponsive controls and weird gameplay choices. First major problem is the jumping - you can clearly see the sprite of your character making contact with a ledge only to discover that you missed it and die. The second problem is that after dying you lose your only weapon and have to finish remaining levels of a stage by before-mentioned crappy jumping, unable even to obtain specials from destructible containers. Maybe it's an example of author not understanding the medium he tried to copy, or perhaps that was an attempt to artificially raise difficulty, but just results in frustration. And I value my time too much to put up with that when there's a whole world of emulation of pristine retro titles just few clicks away. Refunded.
"Mastema: Out of Hell" ist ein 2D Indie-Plattformer.
Alte Plattformer hatten oft keine besonders gute Steuerung.

exelente!
is a pretty neat retro game with cool pixel graphics music and gameplay defently Oscar Celestini nail it in the "retro style departament"
The controls can be really frustrating at first, definitely takes some practice to master. Has several questionable level design choices and the bosses are laughably easy. But the music and graphics will hit that sweet spot and satisfy your retro cravings.
The design is great
Me parece buen juego.
edit: imla
hell no!!
buggy controls, shi**y hit boxes and the best skills are useless here. bought it on sale for 50 cent, but would never buy it again!! played it through tho...
a good game, with bad realisation
style, pixel graphics, retro feelings... all those are in good shape, but... movement, jumping... that`s a really weak part of Mastema, so i can`t recommend it
gostei do game parecido com o Super Ghouls'n Ghosts do SNES

Am I the only one that sincerely can't understand the negative reviews?
I fully understand this game is not for everyone, but it is very apparent what type of game you're getting yourself into, from the graphics and specially the trailler...
Controls: Don't expect mario. The controls are 100% fair if you don't mistime your jumps.
...And, yes, it can be quite hard a couple times. In this game, and there will be a few "omg so unfair" deaths. What about it?
The Actual Difficulty: "Nintendo hard, but very forgiving?" From the "mixed" reviews I was fully expecting the game to throw me all the way back to stage 1 when I got a game over. Nope. Checkpoint every couple levels. Pretty standard.
Most of the difficulty is from the tight platforming, and the fact that that you lose your weapon when you die. Also, it's not in every stage you can recover your weapon, and even when you can, sometimes you have to take a riskier path to do so.
The Bad:
As said before, a few of the deaths are gonna be "so unfair". Also, when you game over, the game sends you to the title screen, and doesn't even auto-selects "continue", so you manually have to press down. how dare they do this to us.
...That's it.
Just.... make sure you know what you're buying people..... it's not because it's on a $0,50 sale and not an adult game that you should automatically buy it, AND THEN review it badly because it's not your type of game... =-= jesus...
There's a BIG difference between "bad" game design, and "not my type of" game design.
Most retro inspired games tried to recreate the NES era of platformers. This took the rarer approach of replicated old DOS or Amiga platformers. They succeeded completely.
On that note, I want to say that my "Not Recommended" is NOT a thumbs down on the game but a warning that this was made for a specific player. If you loved Amiga-era platformers this will be amazing. Buy it now, well worth the money. I'm not that audience, and I don't think many people are.
This game looks and sounds absolutely beautiful. It's dark, its stylish, the level design and enemies are thematic and move exactly how they should. CRT Mode or not, this nails the retro feelings.
The issue that me, and most players, will have stems from comes from certain elements of Amiga design. It's slow, methodical, and precise. You're constantly weak compared to the world and even need to find a power-up to perform your basic attack.
Even in the first few levels you're being tested with near pixel perfect jumping. I haven't even mastered the basic controls and I'm being to ask to jump across gaps as long as my maximum. This gets even worse when you don't have a weapon to defend yourself from the monster on the other side of the gap. This game is brutal and unforgiving and it doesn't always feel fair.
An example of this is that when you die, you lose your sword AND all diamonds counting towards a bonus life. The swords are usually given at the beginning of a chapter and if you lose it you're stuck jumping over enemies for at least 1-2 full levels. Losing one life, makes the rest of your lives MUCH harder. It's often easier to just quit and replay the whole chapter.
At the end of the day, I like this game and think its fantastically made. But I don't have any nostalgia towards the Amiga and instead find it often to be frustrating instead of fun. I believe very few people are the core audience for this game, but if you are this game will be great.
Mastema Out of Hell is a steam videogame featuring nagged drilling lines of negative sours into a chamber lane of pinnacle drops of blood in shrouded cream of darkness!!!
It's very sterilized format into a zone gallery levels blanket sunrise into a drowning fuzz-ball!!!
The stages are contaminated shrugged with no choices dripped with a skeptic funnel blaze of crowdiness!!!
Their logical percentages braced with fun typed sharply headlights illuminated creative bosses that have a withdrawl punch!!!
The music is alright in dense straight forward clenched roared netting fanning in the closet!!!
I give this game a 8.9/10 stunned gaze score gleaming into a crystal hell ball of global united nations love the burrito master
Можно забыть про "Mastema: Out Of Hell" навсегда :)
Mastema: F*ck this hell...
>A grandes Rasgos:

I think I bought this not long after it was published. I launch it every once in a while when I'm not really sure what to play. It's not a great game. It's not really a bad game either. You can tell that someone cared about making it. It almost reminds me of a time when Steam was different. If you're looking at this during the summer sale while it's 49 cents, there are way worse games to buy for that amount.
Unplayable.
First level, main character's jump isn't high enough to reach any platforms. I tried everything, it's just too short of a jump. I can't jump over the enemy, I can't grab the coin on top of the screen, I can't jump from one platform to the next, I can't jump from the ground to the closest platform above it and I can't jump over the acid pit. I'm using keyboard btw.

Muito bom old school totalmente
It was a very hard and very nice game.
Thank you!
The platforms are bad placed, if you die once you lose your weapon and the controls are so non-intuitive
this game was lots of fun plenty of old school sights and sounds and at the cheap price get it and use an xbox controller makes it easier to play.
I'll start off by saying this game is incredibly hard. That being said its also fun and quite addicting. It really leaves you no room for error. Love the games horror design. Would reccomend to retro gamers/ horror fans.
Game looks amazing but gameplay is just bad and broken:(
We cant do anything without powerup, cant jump when we stay close to platform, cant change controls..everything just feel very stiff and bad programmed. Sound effects hurt my ears in most cases..
I reali want to like this game but i just cant.
Graphic like i said is great, very climatic backgrounds and characters, good animations with sadly doesnt make this a good game.
Its dark, amazing looking but poor version of super mario bros gameplay:(
Mastema out of hell is a side scroller, there is something a like a lot about Mastema out of hell, make me want to make this game one of my favorite games, but I have already some favorite games, there is no logic having more than 3 favorite games, hmm I liked a lot just skip the main menu, the main menu have a lot things, buttons here and there, tutorials hmm the main menu can make you not interested before start the game, but keep it up get to the game, skip the main menu breath, and see how awesome it is, it have awesome animations, amazing oldschool gameplay, what I mean by that is difficulty is high, but the powerups are very powerful, I would say it reminds me pitfall for nes, but with mega drive graphics and a lot more action, sound effects are awesome, I think this is really great for the side scroller genre, and I would love to see some clones with the same quality, I don't know about you but, graphics looks awesome to me.
+enemies explode in evil dust
+finish the level for hear an amazing win sound effect
+amazing gameplay
+awesome level design
+great sound effects
+very good soundtrack

This is a great game based on the Amiga classics following the system limitations! Good artstyle, excellent music and difficult right on point. Don't listen to people comparing this to snes games, because they're just accustomed to Nintendo "walk on a park" platformers from that period. You have jumps with 2 pixels of tolerance, lose your weapon after lose one life and must pass some stages using only the secondary powers until found another one and returns to the beggining of each world if you face a game over. Almost an euro Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but the game never fells unfair and you actually get better after each play.
There's a few unpolished things here and there, like you gain control over the character just before the stage screen and can move it to your death, the ice world isn't saving after you beat it and bad menu interface, but none wich compromises the gameplay.
i can only hope for a massive overhaul to be done on this game like was done with Slain; nice framework i reckon but the controls are so terrible, pinpoint precision required, though inputs will be lost or ignored at a whim. be careful when raging, as New Game is the default in the menu, rather'n Continue. only worth a Follow at the most, definitely nothing more than bundle-fodder currently.
A lot of effort was spent on making a game look like a format that went obsolete 25 years ago.
Unfortunately if the game was released 25 years ago, it would have flopped, the competition is better.
We have exchanged lazy 8 bit graphics for slightly less lazy 16 bit graphics, but the general theme is the same as the rest of the retro dross choking the Steam catalog... a low effort copy of an ancient kind of game that isn't as good as the games it's copying, just to make a quick buck on Steam or through bundles and card flippers.
Some points should be awarded for at least displaying the game fullscreen with a wide aspect ratio.
Gameplay here is quite bad despite the effort that went into making the game look as bad as a game from 25 years ago, clearly the effort that went into the gameplay itself was even less. Controls are sloppy and a bit like wading through treacle, you get punished quite a lot for dying (or perhaps rewarded because then the game stops?). If you like this kind of game you'd be far better off just firing up an emulator, playing around for a while and then realising games today are far better than the games of yesterday.
There are very few retro pixel games that exceed the quality or interest of the original era games they're trying to cash in on. Mastectomy: Out of Ideas isn't one of them.
Imagine if in Super Castlevania IV that you lost your whip whenever you died.
"Well that's not a big deal. You can just find the upgrades again in the candles, which are usually really close to where you start out on your next life."
No, not the upgrades. Literally, the entire whip. And your subweapons.
"That doesn't make sense, though. It's an action game. How could you not have a default weapon? That would mean you'd have to purposely walk, run, or jump around enemies. Sometimes you'd have to slowly wait for their movement patterns so you could avoid touching them, especially around moving platforms. It would be boring, tedious, and an absolute chore. Completely antithetical to what an action game should be. It would be like playing a racing simulator where the developers chose not to program an accelerate function for the vehicles."
And that's Mastema: Out of Hell.

Very nice game
Mastema: Out of Hell is a short, beautiful game - but its clunky controls and unfair mechanics drag it straight down to Hell.
Pros:
- Incredible pixel art: Looks like something straight off of a Genesis or SNES - in a good way!
- Good enemy and level variety.
- Forgiving difficulty: some levels are incredibly hard, but even if you lose all your lives, you can continue endlessly from the start of the world you got to.
Cons:
- Awkward controls: If you use a controller, your character will jump endlessly if you hold the button down. There's no "tapping" jump to hop a short height, it's all or nothing. If you jump while flush against a ledge, you'll lose all momentum and fall straight down. These issues can lead to many, many deaths.
- Combat: The combat is the weakest point of the game. Combat comes in two forms, a very short range sword "blast", and disposable powerups you can find strewn throughout the levels. The sword is unpredictable (sometimes it fires quickly in repeated short bursts, other times you can hammer the key for several seconds and nothing will happen), and the powerups are hit and miss - some will do tons of damage, some do less than your sword.
- The worst part about the combat however is that if you die, you lose your sword, and most levels do not have another one to pickup. Most of the time, your best bet is to just try to avoid enemies, which makes the gameplay a lot less fun.
- Enemy AI: the most annoying enemies in the game are the basic imps you find in the first stage. They walk endlessly back and forth, but will just stop randomly - usually right as you go to leap over them. This, coupled with the fact you usually have no weapons, leads to some very frustrating gameplay.
- Length: despite many, many deaths, I beat the entire game in a little under 2 hours. For $4.99, that's not terrible, but it wasn't exactly a fun experience due to all these flaws.
Overall, I would only recommend this to the most sado-masochist players. I enjoy a good, challenging game, but there's a definite line between challenging and just poorly made, and this game ventures slightly into the latter.
First of all, unlike many other retro style platformers, this one isn't really bad. At least, it's not among the worst ones. It totally isn't. It has very strong Amiga / SNES vibe, the visuals are nice, music is great, the story is charming... Unfortunately, there are three problems that don't let me to give it a thumb up.
The first problem is my usual complain. Why? This game is exactly like mediocre platformers from early 90s. With totally nothing special about it. Back in the 90s, I would buy this game and think “Well... OK, it wasn't a complete waste of money.” But I also won't enjoy it as much as all those must have titles. It's something you would rent, get from a friend, or pirate on Amiga back in 90s. Nowadays... it's just... why? I bet, most of the people didn't even finish all the best games from the 90s yet. And thanks to eBay and ROMs, it's really easy to get those nowadays. So, what's the point of getting mediocre new game of this kind? It's not like Mastema: Out of Hell is our ultimate retro experience with everything you may ever want from Amiga game. It's just one of the many “It's not so bad” titles from that period. Why?
The second problem – levels. They're short and dull as... I don't know. What's the dullest thing out there? They're pretty much that dull. Every level can be finished in like less than a minute. I know, I know, it's a retro style platformer, it wasn't supposed to be 100+ hours long, but come on! Levels here are short, dull and uninspiring. But there's one thing that will make things harder for you. And not in a good way.
And that thing is my final problem. Here's the question – did you play Terminator 2: Judgment Day on the NES? Personally, I loved that game. It had awesome graphics, it had great sound, it had stylish UI and it followed the movie perfectly. But it had awful jumping mechanics. Which was OK for most of the time but ruined the final stage completely. Now imagine a game where every single stage is like final stage from T2 on the NES. Long story short – you can't just do jumps. Well, technically you can, but you won't reach the places you need. You need to run first. Almost every jump in the game is “run and jump”. And most of the time mistake won't be an option. You miss the platform – you die. It's also a game where you can't believe your eyes. One of those, where you'll die by falling “through” the platforms. It'll look like you should make it, but you won't. It was one of those things that everybody hated in platformers back in the days. Why in the world anyone will ever want it now?! And guess what? When you'll die, you'll lose your weapon. Enjoy.
So... yeah. Even though presentation here isn't that bad, a weird blend of dull levels and awful jump mechanics totally ruin the game. There are many real awesome retro games in this genre that you probably didn't play yet. Forget about this one and go for them instead.
Mastema is made of very nice pixelart, good music and it's unforgiving as hell!
This game brings me back on the Amiga good old times when games were challenging and a precision jump was a really important thing.
My rating is 6 out of 10.
Wow, I feel like this is a peice of gaming history or something. I didn't think it would be that cool, I just was thinking some cheezy retro stuff. This actually feels like amiga, like shadow of the beast or something, something so old school.
The sprite work is AMAZING, thats actually why I bought the game was just for the retro graphics but it really does feel like the real thing.
The diamond shaped pick ups, the music, the art..
I read a review and someone was complaining about the death noise.
It's purposely that loud, you aren't supposed to enjoy dying
the main character's life is one of pain and agony so when he dies he lets out a scream, I think it's perfect.
all of it.
I hope the community catches on to this game, I almost missed it and found it by accident.
This is a real project of love, not a 5 minute slapped togeather retro-poop like some others on steam i have tried.
I'm starting to think by the reviews I'm seeing nobody actually played amiga games. If you are expecting controls like super mario brothers and meat boy you will be disappointed, it's not THAT kind of game.
Mastema: What the Hell....
This game has perfect catch of 90s SNES style and taste. However some weird decisions stopped it to become a better game, what a pity.
Good:
- Really nice SNES style art and character design, especially watching the cutscene is nostalgic
- 16 bit style music and sound effect
- Cheap and have trading cards
Bad:
- Control is having bug and cause player fails the stage unfairly due to this. Such as the sword sometime stopped shooting for no reason, or player has reached the pixel perfect point to jump from edge and jump button stopped responding, then you watch yourself fall into a deep abyss. Sometime you cannot jump over a short platform if you sticked too close of it
- The Crystal mechanic make no sense. It's like Super Mario Bros. that you collect 100 Crystal for 1up, but if you die when collected 50 Crystal, next life you lose all of them and start from 0 Crystal. Means you need to collect 100 Crystal in single life for 1up
- Some area in a level just no value to visit such as 4 Crystal placed within 2 enenmy and 1 deadly trap, you risked your life to collect 4 piece of useless Crystals
Suggestion:
- Should change the Crystal mechanism like Castlevania heart. Each Crystal allow you to throw one sword and 10 Crystals for 1 magic, it should improve a lot for the whole game
- Add some cutscene and dialogue after each boss fight instead of normal green guy muscle posing without any words
Verdict:
If you're grow up with SNES and can afford the unfair death, buy it on -90% deal. This up vote is purely for SNES spirit.
muito bom, relembra os games de arcade
In general ok, but there is quite a lot of flaws in gameplay:
+ music
+ arts
+ design
- hit detection
- levels design
- gameplay in general
- sound fx mixing (death sound is just to loud)
Looks great, sounds decent...but the controls are just unacceptable. Will ask for a refund. Might rebuy as some point if they do a big update on the game.
I don't really feel like anyone should go out of their way to play this. It's got a really nice Amiga-esque ("meegy") aesthetic but the physics are bad (every jump feels 2 pixels too short, interaction with platforms is sort of wonky), the attack feels unresponsive and many enemies have way too much HP, to get the game in a window you have to run it through DXWND, you basically have to trick it into recognizing an Xbox 360 dpad with joy2key, and the player's death sound is one of the most over-loud, awful things I've ever heard in my life. Just not a very pleasant experience all around.
Mastema?
