This game was overwhelmingly mediocre.

You'll gather a party and traverse from snowy village to icy dungeon repeatedly. You've seen pretty much all the game has to offer environment-wise in the first 10 minutes. I was hoping that would get better, but it doesn't. The story has been done before (and better) with Final Fantasy X. The combat is just monotonous. You'll one-shot every enemy with the first basic combo skill you get so there's not much reason to experiment. The skill upgrade / progression system is just needlessly complex and entirely random chance. And the damage sponge enemies will constantly have a final death move that will happily troll you with a game over. A couple of the longer boss fights have this too, just to make it more painful.

I'd avoid it, there's better JRPGs out there. Looking at my playtime in this review, I would've thought that I'd sunk 80 hours in because that's what it felt like over the course of 25.

Se diz inspirado em Chrono Trigger, mas em qual parte realmente é inspirado em CT?
No sistema de combate, é tão simples quanto, com poucas diferenças, mas pra mim é apenas isso essa tal inspiração.
Trilha sonora é toda composta por músicas de piano, pessoalmente não consegui achar nenhuma música memorável, não é ruim, é apenas ok...
A história é razoável, não é nada de incrível ou fantástica. E sem muita reviravolta.
Os gráficos são bons, nada de jogo coloridinho, e sem muita variação de cenários...
Sem muita variedade de inimigos, muitos deles só mudam a skin.
Aí você junta isso tudo: Músicas melancólicas, ambientado na neve, uma história triste com uma narrativa razoável ... E você terá I am Setsuna (pessoalmente achei a história uma bosssssque)...
Personagens também não são nada memoráveis, a maioria deles são bem paia pra falar a verdade.
Pra quem gosta de RPG ou JRPG no caso, vale a pena. Um jogo que não é nem ruim e nem muito bom, apenas um jogo ok... jogável de boa. E se eu tiver que dar uma nota seria um 7,5/10 (mentira achei um 7/10).

Me and my wife used this game as an example of one of the first games we never finished, which became a running theme for us, so I recently came back to play it from the beginning to actually finish it.

I am Setsuna fails to deliver on nearly everything it presents to us with just enough going for it so you can gaslight yourself into playing just a bit longer since maybe it will get good, but it never does.

Starting with the gameplay. The momentum system (once you finish googling how to actually trigger it reliably) CAN be enjoyable. It has decent enough game feel, and when it meaningfully alters how the skill works, it can be tactically satisfying. Also, some of the skills are fun to use and allowed for variety in the way I played. However, this is undermined by every enemy in this game being extraordinarily one note. A painful example of this is a boss hyped up to be responsible for the glowing purple barriers in the overworld, you might imagine they have some sort of shield ability, or interesting magic, or anything interesting about them. But their only moves are the same rush attack but with different elements. That's it. You never feel any pressure to adjust your tactics based on the enemy you fight, you can force-feed the exact same strategy against virtually every enemy in the game and find similar success.

And its not just the bosses, the mob encounters are also extremely bland. Its very easy to approach a group from behind to start with a full turn and a charge of momentum, do two AoE moves, and they all die. And this isn't from being over-leveled, I never did any grinding in this game and even started to avoid as many encounters as I could about halfway through since they were so mind-numbingly repetitive.

Also, their decision to have the enemies randomly wander around but have it actually matter for the area of effect of some moves, felt extremely clunky. Only a few skills let you manipulate where you or enemies are positioned, and the ones that do are outrageously clunky and rarely put you right where you want to be. Sometimes this can be the difference between one of your characters going down, or two, because the game arbitrarily squished your characters too close together and they got hit by the same attack. Plus, some encounters are meant to be fixed positions, but the game is janky enough that sometimes your characters will still slightly move. For example against the final boss, by the end of it my team slowly rotated towards the right, and the boss was awkwardly facing at a 2/3rds angle away from the camera. The positions mattering for certain moves only detracted from the experience, they were better off without it.

Speaking of janky, one of my support spritnites stopped working entirely after it got a flux added onto it, and it was something I was trying to 'build' for (you don't have to bother with builds, it won't matter). Who knows how many other under-the-hood bugs were screwing things up.

This could be excusable with a good story, and from the premise it sounds like it would be good, right? Even if it is basically just a ripoff of ff10. But for this story to be emotional like it advertises you have to be using a LOT of imagination.

--------- SPOILERS AHEAD -----------

This story suffers from the writing style where a mystery is setup that you want to know more about, which keeps you playing, and then the reveal is completely unsatisfying. Who is this mysterious and sinister man who hired the mc to kill Setsuna? Its just the second in command to another party member who only wanted Setsuna killed because she was corrupted by monster blood or whatever, and this second in command also does not care about Setsuna being killed at all anymore the next time you talk to him. The thread goes absolutely nowhere.

Nidr is Setsuna's father? But doesn't want to tell her? Will we get any sort of interesting tension about that? Will he treat her differently? Maybe he will have conflicting feelings watching the only thing left of his love go off to die? Of course not lol, they do absolutely nothing with that thread.

Aeterna suddenly vanishes? We don't know if she is alive or dead? Maybe someone will have feelings about this? Well no, they just move on, they only talk about being worried that they might not be able to make it to the last lands, but nobody entertains the idea of grieving what might have been the loss of their companion. And when she returns instead they are just suspicious.

Aeterna's nature was actually a big tease, they kept on hinting at something strange about her, with her being unusually powerful, knowing too much, and all that. When it is revealed? Its... Unexpected... But it adds nothing. The party asks some questions, but nobody has any feelings about it. Its just a convoluted reason Aeterna has to disappear to 'die' at the end. And of course, none of the characters say anything about how by killing the time judge they cause Aeterna's death :/ when we spent the whole game finding reasons to not kill characters we don't have to, and we just kind of go for it without question on the time judge. Inconsistent and sloppy.

The worst one is the whole premise itself. You would think we would explore some emotions about Setsuna being on a quest to die, but they barely mention it whatsoever. Its very matter of fact. I figured what they were doing was that once we get to the end, that's when people would start to get sad or have more of a conversation about what was going to happen, but when we finally get to the point where Setsuna would be sacrificed any potential tension is immediately tossed away since the time judge character immediately starts off saying that Setsuna doesn't have to die. The potential emotional payoff I figured they couldn't possibly mess up just entirely abandoned.

Oh, and when there is a new convoluted reason Setsuna has to die, by that point I don't feel a single thing. Its a new reason invented from nothing at all, ties into nothing from before, and is completely unexplained. It also happens away from the rest of the party, and we don't get to see anyone's reaction to it.

Its also very short, you can breeze right through it in a couple nights. For $40 its pretty outrageous. There are so many better jrpg's out there, and I wonder, with this game being my last experience with a jrpg for years after if it was the reason I hadn't played more jrpg's since then.

I'd give this a 4/10 in a good mood. Oh yeah and some people complain the music is bad since its only piano but I was a fan, so it has that going for it I guess. Also the characters visual designs do actually slap for days.

Um RPG que apresenta várias referências ao incontestável Chrono Trigger e entrega uma experiência satisfatória e divertida com uma carga de melancolia narrativa, que lembra e muito o contexto do Final Fantasy X, e uma gameplay com mecânicas simples que não exige muito grind principalmente de jogadores mais experientes. Apesar de sua linearidade, que por vezes possa incomodar, a jornada dos heróis é bem apreensiva e instigante com um grau de dificuldade mediana, principalmente na reta final. I Am Setsuna is throwback, neo-retro JRPG with a battle system that takes heavy inspiration from the SNES classic Chrono Trigger. The whole game exudes a distinctly melancholic feeling using an experimental piano-only soundtrack and single frozen arctic setting.

[h1]Things I Loved:[/h1]
[h2]Addictive Battle System[/h2]
I absolutely loved the battle system in this game. Its core gameplay is a lot like Chrono Trigger: there is an ATB gauge that fills up and allows your characters to take actions, but the enemies are constantly moving around the screen, so timing and positioning matter. This game also has a quick time mechanic, somewhat reminiscent of the Paper Mario games, where if you press a button with good timing during an attack or ability animation you get a bonus effect. This means you have to pay attention to each command, leading to fun, engaging, and satisfying battles.

[h2]Fun Character Customization[/h2]
While it took me a bit to wrap my head around the Sprinite system, once I got the hang of it, it was really fun. I enjoyed playing around with different abilities and passives to create combos and synergies between party members. I also really loved how a lot of the weapons in the game are side-grades. Often I found myself using weapons with slightly lower stats because I liked their added effects, which I though was cool.

[h2]Experimental Yet Interesting Soundtrack[/h2]
This game only uses a single instrument for the entire soundtrack: a piano. I thought this would get boring fast, but I actually kinda ended up really liking it. The game used lots of different cadences of piano music, from somber and classy to silly and jazzy, so the OST never got too repetitive. It gave game an interesting vibe.

[h2]Infuriatingly Sloppy Writing[/h2]
Let me start by saying that I truly believe that with more time, attention, and better editing, the story of this game could have been an all-time great. But as it stands, the writing is just so very disappointing. It feels like whenever the game brings up an interesting plot point, half of the time it gets immediately dropped and never brought up again. More that once, revelations that feel like they should be super important end up have literally no effect on the story. It genuinely feels like the game is constantly minimizing and undercutting its own attempts at meaningful themes, which is super frustrating. And don't even get me started on the ending...

[h2]Repetitive Environments[/h2]
I fully understand that setting the game in a single biome was an artistic choice - the cold harsh winter is supposed to emphasize the tragedy of the story. But just cause I understand it, doesn't me I have to like it. By about 2/3rd of the way through the game, I felt like had seen every iteration of "snow and ice" possible, and was craving some kinda of variety. Variety which sadly never appeared.

[h2]Lack of Enemy Types[/h2]
Let me make it clear: Every single enemy type in this game is unique and fun to fight. The problem is that the game starts reusing enemies surprisingly quickly, which is especially noticeable in the mid-game. Seriously, just 4 or 5 new enemy types would have added so much to the overall experience.

I completed the entire game, including all achievements, in about 33 hours. My overall opinion is that this game is deeply and undeniably flawed, yet still fairly enjoyable. It's honestly worth playing for the battle system alone. I just really wish the rest of the presentation matched the quality of the main gameplay.

I assume most of us got to this game by one of two reasons, this is a game made by Square Enix or the absolute gem that is the soundtrack. I got here by the latter and even though I have a hard time recommending the game to anyone, I will definitely listen to the soundtrack again and again in the future. It effectively enhances the cold and isolated atmosphere of a snowridden world and a journey destined to end in sacrifice.

Now why do I have a hard time recommending this game even when there are some very strong elements to the overall game. It's because a lot of the game is just...mediocre. Given I had high expectations based on the fact that it's a SE game and I could only imagine what sort of game is deserving of such a soundtrack, so even a decent average game was inevitably going the be a disappointment.

Characters
First off, the characters are personality wise just very bland. Yes, most of them have a motivation and personal struggles but none of it is explored deeply. The characters primarily tell you their struggles rather than showing it through action or having them properly contemplate on it. The most egregious being Nidr, [spoiler] Setsuna's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ father, never having a single moment with his, unbeknownst to her, daughter.[/spoiler] ..because god forbid I start caring about the characters and their interpersonal problems. Setsuna, although a likeable character for the most part, is also very bland. She always railroads to the typical dialogue of what you would expect of pure, innocent, and goodhearted character. Which isn't a problem on its own, but it becomes one when you can predict her every single reaction to each situation. This would be fine if it was just an NPC or a side character, but she is supposed to be the emotional core of the story. With the premise of going on a journey with the goal of sacrificing yourself, you would expect her to have some doubts but still be determined. The only doubts she has is whether we can complete our journey, not whether she'll be alright or whether her life has any value. Which again is not immediately mediocre, however at the very least we should get some backstory or explanation on how this pure selfless (and arguably self destructive) mindset came to be. And don't even get me started on our main character Endir. A borderline silent protagonist with some actually funny dialogue options, typically they are somewhat mean and coldhearted, but every single party member plays it off as an "oh you silly you", which again can be fine but we never see the characters properly getting acquainted with him so how do they know he is "stoicly joking around" and not just an actual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Which has been my interpretation of him through the entire game, made the story more tolerable imo.

World
The idea behind the world is very intriguing. A harsh and icy world, where people have to survive against nature and monsters. A widely known ritual of sacrificing one of their own just so every other person can live just a little bit more comfortable. But it's just...so bland. Given that the NPC dialogue nicely varies with different thoughts on the situation, almost every area look like every other area. The amount of times I got lost on the [spoiler]flying ship[/spoiler] just because the world is empty with barely any proper landmarks to help navigate... It's snow, just snow and only snow...some icy caves...and then suprise suprise...more snow. The villages are also tiny and unmemorable, barely having anything that makes them stand out. You do get to see some scattered remains of destroyed villages on the overworld, but it's not nearly enough to reflect the struggles the people of such a world have to endure.

Gameplay
Combat is very typical and also very shallow. There are several elemental attacks that barely make a noticeable difference unless there is an obvious resistance to it. There are combination attacks that requires the turns of two characters, but they are almost never worth it with the steep MP cost, the damage equivalent of only 1-1.5x character, and the needed skills to activate them possibly being useless depending on your team comp. I played around but I barely used the combo attacks. The game also has an inheritance system to buff skills by equipping charms there is a chance (when using the momentum mechanic) to pass one of the charm's passive skills onto the equipped skill. Even when spamming this mechanic it happened too infrequent to actually use it as a proper tool. Also the results can be very underwhelming i.e. the reduce mana cost skill buffed my Fire II attack from 24 mana cost to a whopping 23 mana cost.
The areas to explore are also very blandly designed, most enemies can be walked past by if you just can't be bothered and the level layout is just so basic and uninteresting. To add to the tedium there are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minibosses just casually scattered on the map ready to wreck your ♥♥♥♥. You can escape with a cheap item, but the moment you don't notice you accidentally walked into a miniboss you can say goodbye to your last 20-30 min progression. Additionally you will often find locked chests throughout the levels that you can't open. How do you open them? [spoiler]Being at 80% of the story[/spoiler], so now you get to backtrack towards all the previous places (to be fair at this point you can take the [spoiler]airship[/spoiler] to these different areas, but you will still have to jump off and go through the map), which is just a shamelessly archaic manner to artificially increase playtime. And don't even get me started on the mediocre boss fights that are just hard hitting damage sponges.

Definitly the dumbest thing this game does is [spoiler] giving you your final party member right before the final boss...well gee it's only the coolest edgy emo character in the game...would have hated to have fun with him on my team...[/spoiler]

TLDR; Just listen to the OST and pretend there is a good game attached to this.

Pretty good JRPG that I’ve played recently. It has a nice story, a not-too-bad ending, a good OST, and a beautiful snow-themed atmosphere.

However, this game was designed to be like older JRPGs, so it has some odd inconveniences that you should be aware of before buying and playing it, such as:

[*] You cannot load your save normally. Yeah, I don’t know who thought this would make the game more hardcore or if it was meant as a tribute to older games, but it’s just stupid. To load your save, you either have to die and reload, or close and reopen the game. For me, it was just an inconvenience, not some respectful homage to classic games.
[*] There is no map or minimap in the game. The game itself has relatively small dungeons and an overworld, but sometimes you really wish you had some kind of map. Many dungeons are built with very similar layouts and assets, so you can easily waste extra time navigating them instead of going where you need to go. The same applies to the overworld: there are many locations, but no fast travel and no in-game map, so you have to find a map on the internet and navigate using that. It would have been much simpler to just add one to the game.
[*] Dialogue options don’t change anything. You can choose different dialogue options throughout the game, but all they change is how other party members respond. Overall, they don’t affect anything meaningful- there is no friendship or relationship system, so they only slightly alter responses.
[*] Not very responsive objects. In the game, there are some puzzles and points of interest that don’t always respond properly to interaction. You often have to press the interact button multiple times, or even move away and try again, which is a bit annoying.

That’s pretty much all the inconveniences in the game. It would be a lot better if you could simply exit to the main menu and load your save, but if you’re willing to let these issues slide, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

As for achievement hunters, the game and achievements are pretty simple. There are only two missable achievements, and you only need to think about them at the very end of the game, during the last boss fight, so a separate save file helps a lot. There’s also just one grindy achievement, but it can easily be done in the late game. Overall, just play the game normally and worry about achievements at the end.

I recommend this game to all JRPG lovers, especially those who like older entries. If I had to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10, I’d give it a 7/10. Just one missing feature could make it a lot better, but it’s still good as it is.

　最初から最後まで、雪（白）を基調にした世界がとにかく印象的。幻想的で物悲しい空気感がずっと続いて、音楽もそれをさらに引き立ててくれます。ストーリー自体は単調に感じる部分もあるけれど、その分「雰囲気に浸って進む」タイプのJRPGとしてまとまりが良いと思いました。

　戦闘はATBが溜まってからの連携や工夫が楽しく、クロノ系の手触りが好きな人には刺さるはず。さらに飛空艇入手後は、各地で料理素材を集めたり、法石に昇華効果を盛ってビルドを詰めたりと、やりこみ要素もしっかり用意されていて満足度が高かったです。

　静かな世界観と音楽で心を掴まれつつ、戦闘と育成でしっかり遊べる作品でした。

The game has a very good potential, with a good combat play, custom skill and passive build, art direction, good storytelling- i mean it.

but they are too focused on making this game look like an old rpg (idk if they port this game on old console or not), that they forgot a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ QOL, in the level of unforgivable.

1. one monster has different drop, depending on what hero last hit it(element damage), how much damage occur, debuffed or not? and multiple hero skill hit.

This was the first JRPG I played from start to finish. I was recently talking to a friend that is really into JRPGs, and it came to my mind that I heard this game's soundtrack when I was on a Spotify Radio station for another song.

I bought it on sale, and I enjoyed it. Reading other reviews, they speak of issues that I do somewhat agree with, but I would still recommend playing this game nonetheless.

The story is somewhat interesting, but it does take half the game to get going in my opinion. Each character, although following stereotypes (mostly silent main character with inexplicable past, a girl that's too kind for her own good, the character with absolutely no backstory until the end of the game, rugged old man with a sad backstory and trauma, the eager kid that wants to go out and see the world, and the sheltered princess that is now learning the truth about the world), is likeable.

The highlight are the visuals and atmosphere: The game looks gorgeous within its art style, and uses a mix of 2D and 3D assets very well. The lighting looks pretty and the characters pop out of the environments. But more than anything, the eternally falling snow paired to a soundtrack scored almost exclusively with *a single piano* is a genuinely emotional experience.

It's an active time battle system (ATB) with the addition of a QTE system usable by charging a separate bar. As my first time seeing one of these, it took a tiny bit to get used to, but (by default, can be changed in settings) time freezes once you've selected an initial action, so you can use that time to think.
Some of the reviews mention that the game feels unbalanced and that the enemies deal too much damage. I partly disagree with this, because I only died around 5 times total and those happened because I got careless with my turn management and didn't heal or manage aggro properly (but I do think the enemies deal a lot of damage, I don't think getting two-shot by every boss should be normal.)

The gear system is a bit much, as there are too many items to collect by killing enemies a certain way so you can use their drops to get skills. Or at least, I think there are too many skills and collectibles considering the game's runtime of around 10 hours if you don't do any level grinding. I got overzealous and went into the endgame area around 7 or so levels above what I had when unlocking it.

I think this game is beautiful. I want to know why the game studio got shut down, so I am planning on playing its two other titles. Get this one if it's on sale. I had fun.

I enjoyed how the game tries to evoke the feel of a classic JRPG which is simple but meaningful, nostalgic yet emotional. The combat reminds me of retro turn-based game with an Active Time Battle (ATB) system, but layered with a “Momentum / Spiritnite” mechanic that adds an extra strategic aspect to every encounter. If used well, you get bonus hits, HP recovery or enhanced attacks which gives combat a bit more depth than basic 'attack, heal, repeat'. The game looks absolutely beautiful with characters that have their own burdens and secrets, which gives the story a sense of weight and sadness rather than a lighthearted fantasy.
If I were grading it for myself, I'd say its worth playing if you like old school JRPGs and don’t mind a bit of repetition. It’s definitely not perfect, yet it leaves a quietly lasting impression.

On top of it there is no fast travel option, auto battle system and a lot of things depend on RNG.... so that is quite painful as well. Bottom-line, not that difficult in terms of combat but really grindy in other areas of the achievement hunt.

i wish it would have been as good as people talked about it. its not.

Esp. compared to Octopath Traveller 2 which is already just meh, this is lacking so much basic QoL.

Just from the first few minutes:
- no skipable scenes
- BGM way too loud and no real slider (just a 5 pos setting).
- nice snow animation, but no money left for feet
- "locked" chests with no explanation everywhere
- no proper named "flavor" NPCs
- empty houses
- super linear and small maps
- slow AF overworld (please look at FF8 if you copy something like that)
- white text on bright background
- cheapish menu layouts
- character boxes and a lot of the game feel like a mobile-to-pc port
- it is horribly inconsistent in its artsyle. pixel there, half-3D here, flat anime there. bah. stick to one and do it proper, not dip in everything all at once. (jack of all, master of none)
- the fighting is SOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOW. zZZzzZZzzzz
- the "momentum" thing doesnt seem to work at all
- you cant get the proper tutorials back (only like a cryptic text version)
- you only have text box tutorials, no proper ingame one (see JSH DS1 Tutorial vid on YT)
- mediocre story
- flat character development (if at all)
- no real NPC interaction, no real NPC dialog, no change in dialog, full perma-repeat
- literally copy paste character designs ("heavy" inspiration at best)
- i really like that enemies can move and you have "technically" some fluidity to the ATB system... if it wouldnt be that much of a slog.
- enemies encounters are fixed. which makes the booring game even worse.
- so far no random field encounters

TLDR: seems like a decent story (maybe) but the gameplay and technical execution is mediocre at best. This is literally how a baseline 5/10 game feels. thus the score.

The best thing about this game? it makes me want to play any Tales game again....
or any FF game, or even octopath traveller. or chrono trigger, or SOM or any other game this collection borrowed from. sometimes, the parts are far better than the sum.

TLDR2: looking at the size and scale of the game, this might be a techdemo sold as a fullprice game.

I Am Setsuna одним словом простая, сюжет в ней простой, в нем нет огромного текста с рассказом огромной вселенной, а скорее это сказка, каждый персонаж прописан отлично, со своими личными проблемами, переживаниями. А зимняя атмосфера вместе с потрясающей композицией лишь прибавляет зимний вайб. Боевка до невероятности простая, базовая АТБ система с одним маленьким добавлением которая делает геймплей динамичные, по мере получения урона, или нанесения, заполняется кружок возле атаки, при полном заполненений прибавляеться по одной точке, что эта точка делает ? Все просто, при совершений атаки, даже магической, нужно вовремя нажать на нужную клавишу при размахе, к урону прибавиться магическое свойство, это может быть +урон, отравление, слепота и так далее, это делает геймплей динамичнее и не даёт заскучать, оссобено приятно сражаться с боссами. На первый взгляд игра может показаться простой, но это начало, чем дальше тем сложнее
Однозначно рекомендую тем, кому хочеться пойграть в простую JRPG с простой историей и геймплеем, без лишней нагрузки !

If this is your first JRPG ever, you might enjoy it. But if you're like me and have been playing them since you were a kid, I am Setsuna brings nothing new to the table. It definitely reminds you of the classics (*ahem* Yuna's pilgrimage in FFX), and it looks pretty, but there's not much more to it :(

- The game has an insane amount of spritstones for how short it is.
- I ended up using the same 2 skills on every character.
- Music is pretty but it's basically the same piano stuff from the beginning until the end. Felt pretty flat.
- The story seemed a bit rushed.
- Towns and dungeons all look the same, just different colors.

I really wanted to like this game, so I'm a bit bummed out. 😪

限られた製作費ながら丁寧に作られた90年代RPGといった作品。

【プレイ時間】
大体20時間くらいでクリア。
速い人なら15時間くらいでクリアできるかと思います。
なので人によってはややボリューム不足に感じるかもです。

【ストーリー】
王道のRPGといった風合いで楽しめました。
全体的に物悲しい作風ですが私は好きです。

【グラフィック】
派手さはないもののキャラや背景などは丁寧に作られていて良かったです。
ただ訪れる場所はほぼ全て雪の降る村。ダンジョンは氷の洞窟か古代遺跡のみ。
代り映えがしないのがやや残念ではありました。

【キャラクター】
キャラデザは王道な感じで好みです。
ただキャラクター描写が不足しておりキャラ自体にあまり魅力は感じられませんでした。
各キャラのバックグラウンドも軽く描かれるだけなので感情移入はしずらかったです。

【BGM】
ピアノをベース(というかほとんどピアノしか使ってない)にしたBGMは
美しくも切ない感じでとても良かったです。
作品の雰囲気ともマッチしてたと思います。

【戦闘】
ベースはクロノトリガーのATBです。
ただ正直かなり不満点あり。以下箇条書きにします。

・各キャラのATBバーが横に広がってるので誰がどれくらい溜ってるのかが把握しずらい
　(視線を大きく左右に動かさないといけない)
・シンギュラリティ効果が発動しても文章を読む余裕がない
　(戦闘中はATBバーを常に見ていないといけないため)
・コマンド入力時、誰のコマンドなのかが判別しずらい。名前欄以外に差異がないため。
・攻撃や回復の効果範囲がわからない。

全体的にUIがわかりずらく痒いところに手が届いてない印象。
ちなみに戦略性もあまりありませんでした。
エンドにコンバーターつけてオーラ使用(実質MP消費なしで全員ほぼフル回復)し
残り2人で通常攻撃延々してるだけでラスボス含めたほぼ全てのボスを倒せました。

【UI】
戦闘部分でも書きましたが全体的にUIが杜撰。
戦闘以外だと各キャラがどの法器を装備しているのかわかりずらかったり
法石がコマンドとサポートごちゃまぜになっているのでわかりずらかったりと
とにかくUIが不便でストレスが溜ります。

【チュートリアル】
チュートリアルが説明不足過ぎます。
例えば戦闘中に表示される数字の色についての説明が一切なし。
(白がダメージ・緑が回復・青はMP回復・赤はクリティカル)

【総評】
いろいろと気になる部分はありますが90年代にRPGにハマった30～40代には刺さる作品だと思います。
定価で買うと割高感がありますがセール時なら1500円くらいで買えますのでお勧めです。

Short review after 100% the game and getting every achievement: a fun throwback to oldschool JRPG taking inspiration from Chrono Trigger battle system with some of its own additions to spice things up.

Pros:
- Beatiful world and enviroments, you really feel the snow and winter themed inspiration
- Somber and relaxing piano music, great for a chill playthrough
- A cast of 7 characters, relatively unique
- Decent main story and playthrough around 20 to 30 hours
- Awesome combat system inspired by Chrono trigger, no random encounters, massive amount of dual and triple combos between characters with the additonal systems like momentum if you wait with your skill when you power up it adds different effects or dmg to it when you cast it, also your skills depending on your gear lv up different stats making team/meta builds very diverse and fun to explore
- Great bestiary/item/weapon system where each thing or monster you encounter can be read and watched in 3d in your menu
- Cool looking monsters and bosses

Cons:
- The winter themed world and piano themed music is awesome, but thats it, sadly no variation in enviroments and music do take away from the potential of the game a bit
- Cheap elite mobs which can be encountered early in game and cannot be beaten, the only difference from regular mobs is different colour which means you will have some gameover screens (they are meant to be tackled at near endgame however they appear very early ingame and have to be avoided)
- No sorting system for massive amount of Spritnites (this games skills) makes it a chore to equip your characters
- No real sidequest, the only ones are for ultimate characters skills for each of the 7 protagonists

If you are either a fan of oldschool JRPGS or are looking for an entry point in the genre this game is a solid choice and i do recommend it.

I bought this game close to release, I am a sucker for retro gaming and in 2016 there wasn't such a wealth of games to take that focus yet. So IAS was like bait for me. For my disappointment, it didn't deliver. It is a very bare bones of a formula that the developers clearly liked and understood but didn't know exactly how to execute for today's audience. I have already travelled to Zanarkand and lived a hearthful story about a gentle girl that wants to help despite having to die in the procees, I have already played Chrono Trigger and am not impressed with a copy paste of its combat that somehow feels worse than in the Super Nintendo, and the music is good but it is very outstretched, sad piano music in the snow hits the first time but there's not enough variation on the composition to carry the emotion of the story all the way down till the end.
The characters are not hollow but are very watered down versions of something that the people that are interested in these kind of games have already experienced in all their excellency.
And even then, al that wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for its price, way more than it is worth, if anything wait for a 80% sales off.
My final opinion is that IAS should have had more variation from its impirations, it should have better refined its combat to work better in the engine that they had and they should have worked on more music to make more nuanced each moment.
As it is, is a good game for a first timer sturdio way over priced.

trilha sonora fenomenal toda em piano. o jogo é bem linear e as opções de dialogo não chegam a mudar de forma significativa o desfecho da próxima cena, mas tem uma jogabilidade de batalhas por turnos muito boa. a história é ok, nada muito grandioso, mas bem divertido. e a sensação de evolução dos personagens é bem gostoso. é bem prazeroso derrotar 1 ou mais monstros com somente 1 golpe, sendo que no começo do jogo você da a vida para derrotar 1 só deles. em resumo o jogo é bem divertido e agradável para passar o tempo. e é bem leve. roda na maioria dos hardwares mais simples. se ajustar bem os parâmetros gráficos deve rodar até em gpu integrada de notebook intel antigos de 2014 pra cima.

Почали за щастя, але я вирішив не доходити до упокоя. Гра максимально посередня. Наскільки б мені не хотілося її любити але вона забирає від мене всі причини.

Для себе я виділив два плюса в грі - Саундтрек та Візуальний стиль + Атмосфера (хай буде одним плюсом).
Саундтрек простий але через те що він в собі має лідуючу партію фортепіано - для мене це вже автоматом плюс. Бо фортепіано як інструмент для мене найулюбленіший серед усіх. Проте визнаю що сам ост доволі посередній (як і все в цій грі лмао), якщо порівнювати з іншими. Але свої причини любити я вже назвав.

Візуальний стиль дуже простий, але при цьому ну хороший, ну приємний, не перевантажений, нема нічого зайвого, для когось це буде мінусом бо оригінальності в ньому знову ж таки НУЛЬ. Але мені воно було душевним. Саундтрек в купі з Візуальним стилем непогано створювали атмосферу меланхолії.

З мінусів... ну ееее ВСЕ ІНШЕ. Геймплей нудний, без глибини, репетативний, одманітний, купа інших слів які будуть означати приблизно те ж саме.

Сюжет хоч і прикольний на початку, але потім через всі інші мінуси - мені не вистачає мотивації грати і подивитися що там далі. Я просто гляну на ютубі)

Персонажі пласкі. Дуже. Плюс я щиро не люблю тропи ФРЕНДШИП ІЗ МЕДЖИК, ТРИМАЙМОСЯ РАЗОМ І ВСЬО БУДЕ НОРМІК, ЛЮБОФ ВРЯТУЄ СВІТ І БЛА БЛА БЛА, навіть якщо в кінці виявиться що всім хана і всі померли (це не спойлер, на момент написання рецензії я взагалі не знаю чим закінчиться гра) - вибачте але гра кричить про ці тропи і мені впадлу грати заради того щоб мене вразили руйнацією банальщини, бо до цього треба дійти, а мотивації знову ж нема.

У висновку це посередня жрпг. Для мене мінусів нажаль вийшло більше ніж плюсів. І тому я не можу її радити. Я щиро буду радий якщо комусь ця гра зайде чи зайшла. Може я чогось не викупив в грі. Бо рецензії це все ж про особисті враження. Та і на знижках гра коштує буквально ціну шаурми.

I didnt think I'd end up disliking this but it wasn't good.

Combat kind of boils down to ATB and if you can get your combos off within first three turns. Talismans themselves aren't really beneficial at all. A lot of them do the same but the really expensive ones dont add command slots for your tech (magic) and skills.

Speaking of skills, the game really has no rhyme or reason as to why some skills can only go on some characters and vice versa.

Plot itself was inspired by Chrono Trigger and presents itself as a time travel situation but its so poorly done and tacked on at the end. Bravely default did it better and even then neither hold a candle to Chrono Trigger.

Environmental design is alright, but the melancholic piano score on top of the snowy biome and no change just make it feel monotonous and boring. The game's pacing feels off with when and where you meet characters and the climax itself is just not that engaging.

There's no map and it can be confusing to see where you can actually go. Sidequests are complete waste of time, there are no ultimate weapons. Not to mention there's a few characters who just have surface level connection including the heroine and the MC. They just dont explain things, and its not for a sake of interpretation. they just dont even go into things that would've padded this world out and made it feel more accessible.

Overall I recommend against it but if you get it for free or <$10 thats doable too. Straight 5/10

切なさを醸すBGMと雪の世界、戦闘以外キャラボイスもなしという構成なので、ノベルゲーに通ずる深い感動のある脚本を期待しましたが、それに叶うような内容には感じませんでした。スクエニ制作でケアルを使ったり生贄の旅設定からFF10を思い浮かべつつ、それとは違う魅力を提示して欲しい思いでプレイしましたが、キャラクターの説明を予算の尺に切り貼りして収めただけという印象を私は抱きました。キャラクターの心の動きに納得感があまり持てず、ゲームの都合優位の展開が多く感じました。

戦闘システムに組み込まれている「昇華」と「シンギュラリティ」は、私はゲームクリアまでよく分からないままでした。特定の必殺技が異様に強く、あまり工夫のしがいのない戦闘に感じました。「雪玉に乗っている間回避力が上がる」という敵が出ると、雪玉から降りるのをひたすら待つ時間などもあり、私はあまり楽しめませんでした。

低予算なのは仕方ないと途中から割り切っているつもりでいましたが、ダンジョンの同じ地形とギミックの繰り返しには流石に飽きが来てしまうと同時に、あまりに似通っていてよく迷いました。
オープニング演出も簡易的で、掴みから弱かったなという印象です。

音楽　4/5
ほとんどピアノ音楽目当てでプレイしましたが、とても気に入っています。勝利BGMが安易に流れたり、しっかり聴かせる前に曲が途切れたりと勿体ない使われ方をしている点は気になりましたが、プレイ後も日常的にサウンドトラックを楽しんでいます。

プレイの快適さ 3/5
ロードなしで始まる戦闘はサクサク感はあったかなと思います。アクセサリーに該当する法器やアビリティに該当する宝石が、序盤からショップに無数に羅列されていて、ゲームへの理解を深める段階を経て選択の幅を広げていく導線がなく、ゴチャゴチャしているように感じました。セーブポイントももう少し配置されているとありがたかったです。

雪の世界とピアノの統一された世界観というアイデアは好きだったのですが、肝となるストーリーがかなり弱かったのはプレイしていて残念でした。低予算の中でももう少し工夫をして欲しかったなと感じるゲームです。

I see a lot of criticism for this game, but I'm enjoying it just fine. The idea of the main character being a mercenary hired to kill a girl and ending up actually becoming part of her guard as she goes on a pilgrimage that will end in her death anyway was interesting enough, and the gameplay is fine. Nothing mind-blowing but fine. I guess it helped that I recently played the 3D remake of Secret of Mana and really disliked it (one of my very few thumbs down reviews), and this one feels similar to that one but better in almost every way, so my expectations were exceeded.

This is not a bad game. Very cute chibi style RPG game - the storyline and some character's personalities kind of reminds me of Final fantasy 10 ... There are some lack of character development--but its alright... They really should be a better improvement in some "quality of life" features of the game...

I shall return to this game someday... just because I accidentally forgot to save. I did progress such a long way and I made a stupid move and lost in a battle. Its making me start over from the save point I made waaaaay back. I'm too lazy to start over from such a long progress I made. This is probably one of the quality of life feature that needs improvement.. I don't get why I can't save in a town (safe area) but I can only save where I have to go into my menu in the world map area - this made me forget to save the game. Also -- I wish I can sprint or run in the world map area -- just another quality of life feature needed.

The explanation of the Momentum system is quite poor though. You have to time the pressing of the X-button on an XBox-type controller. Took me a while to figure this out, not helped by a posting on Steam indicating you had to press the Y-button (unless their controller was configured differently?)

Beautiful world, soothing OSTs crafted mainly using only the piano, straightforward story with some twists along the way. Combat is simple, no grinding required to finish the main story, some major grinding is needed to clear some postgame challenges but still completed all achievements within 40 hours.

Potential drawbacks to consider: old school graphics style might be difficult for some to accept; combat curve from mobs to bosses can be quite steep; some things aren't well explained and left to the player to discover/understand, also there is no minimap/world map that I could find; OSTs might be too simple for those looking for more upbeat/complex music.

Overall, highly recommended for fans of old school JRPGs, along the lines of FF1 - 6. It really hits all of the nostalgic points of old school JRPGs.

[b]Resumo da Ópera:[/b] Na época que saiu já era datado, hoje em dia é pior ainda e o charme que ele tem não compensa. Se você começou a ir atrás de JPGs por causa de jogos como Metaphor, você só vai se frustrar aqui.
É um jogo que se baseia bastante em Chrono Trigger e tenta homenagear os JRPGs do passado incorporando os elementos dos mesmos mas acaba pegando mais dos pontos negativos deles como não ter a ausência de saves automáticos e um combate que tem potencial mas é suscetível a coisas como você ser devastado por combos baratos e você perder todo o seu progresso pq você esqueceu de salvar antes de entrar numa masmorra ou cidade e foi posto numa cutscene de 3-5 minutos(que não pode ser pulada) terminando com uma luta de chefe.
A trama tem um tom mais melancólico mas, na minha opinião, ele gasta tanta energia tendo essa melancolia que em certos pontos ele não tem uma progressão lógica ou ele se esquece de fechar certas pontas soltas.
O visual dele tem seu charme e sua trilha sonora dita bem o tom que a trama tenta seguir, mas acaba sendo monótona depois de um tempo.
No fim o jogo tem seu charme mas, ao tentar incorporar muitos elementos dos JRPGs antigos ele acabou não pegando certas que os seus colegas de gênero já haviam começado a incorporar na sua época como poder salvar q quase qualquer momento, o tornando já datado quando saiu. Hoje em dia ele é ainda mais datado.
É bonito mas não recomendo.

・宿屋が存在せずイベント明けの回復なども行われない
・雑魚戦は背後から接触し先制で強力な全体魔法で始末するか、アイテムをがぶ飲みしてHPMPを補給する
・一部の強力なデバフを使用すればほぼ全てのボスがハメられる
・ハメない場合は1人が全体回復、1人がMP補給、1人が攻撃とどちらにせよ単調
・必要以上に防具の種類が多いがどういったキャラクターに向いているものなのか非常にわかりづらく付加効果も具体的に何がどれくらいどのように変わるのか説明なし
・キャラクターはそれぞれに背景はあるもののストーリー自体に起伏が一切ないので感情移入はできない

逆に良かった点は

- A wonderful winter world to explore
- A well told story which is basically ffx again it's different enough to be decent but the premise is still the same.
- Fast fluid combat ie chrono trigger style.
- Lots of shinies on the map to collect and treasure to get

- Nothing but piano music it maybe someones thing but not mine. It's not bad but hearing the same instrument throughout a 50+ hour adventure can be tiresome

- Nothing but white forever. Yes i said the world was wonderful to explore and it is but you will be blinded by white for the entire journey

- Triggering fluxes is completely random and terrible to try and trigger on a regular bases and if you are going for 100% you have to get 200 of them to trigger... good luck

Is it worth your time? Yes and maybe. If it's on sale then yea. Don't feel to bad about grabbing it on sale now though as the company has been defunct for awhile now which is a shame.

At its best, it's mediocre. At its worst, it's awful.

Bland in almost every way. When it's not boring, it's bad.

A terrible lack of balance in enemy encounters. Kill in 2-3 turns or be killed in 1-3 turns.

Boss balancing is even worse. There were some bosses that killed my characters in one hit. For the final boss, I killed it in two hits.

Combat mechanics and synergies (combos) are similar to [i]Chrono Trigger[/i], but infinitely more complex and poorly explained to the player. It requires reading through numerous menus to figure out how to acquire and equip a combo between characters.

Not recommended for any amount of money SE would charge for this.

If [i]Chrono Trigger[/i] had been anything like this game, it likely wouldn't have gotten a western release.

My personal opinion of I Am Setsuna

I Am Setsuna is a beautifully made RPG that captures the nostalgia of classic JRPGs while introducing a heartfelt story (The story kinda gives off a Final Fantasy X vibe). The game's art style, inspired by the SNES era, is stunning, with snow covered landscapes and a melancholic atmosphere that adds depth to the narrative.

started playing this years ago and couldn't work out why i stopped playing. i remembered why after a particularly annoying death and remembering how far back the save point was (overworld saving is a must before EVERY new area). After i worked out a certain combo skill i proceeded to steamroll my way through the rest of the game, spending most of my money on eithers. i kept expecting a sudden twist or the world to suddenly expand beyond the frozen wastes but then boom 'The End'

I desperately wanted to like this game more, but i cant recommend it. This feels a bit like the first 1/4 of a tales game.

TLDR: A ham fisted attempt at resembling JRPGs of old like Chrono Trigger, and misses the mark on about 90% of it. A poor man's JRPG that you will likely forgot about once you've beaten it. I'm being overly harsh here, because it's by no means a terrible game. But at its price tag it needs a slap in the face.

Story: As a silent protagonist named Endir, you are tasked to eliminate a sacrifice named Setsuna before she... sacrifices herself on a ceremony to push back the advances of monsters. Yep.
Along your journey, you will expand your roster with more characters that each have their own moves and stories, however it barely feels important and often misses the mark completely. By this I mean that while there are many opportunities to expand on a sad backstory or to go deeper into anything, it just quickly moves on to the next thing. Also, while you will have some dialogue options, they are mostly meaningless since they only change the next couple of dialogues boxes.

Gameplay: It is a JRPG, similar to Chrono Trigger, but without any of its mastery.
The usual turn based; attack, magic (tech) and items. The main difference here is that you can use up to 3 characters at once to do combos, much like in Chrono Trigger. For instance, if a character can heal and another can do a cyclone, you can now heal everyone by, uh, cycloning the heal, yeah, let's put it this way (seriously, this is like a love letter to Chrono Trigger, if you've played it, you'll definitely notice). While it is an interesting mechanic, the game doesn't manage to do it well as it feels completely useless and underpowered as everyone gets spritenites really quickly that are much better. And the fact that everyone is always crammed together makes for the vast majority of AoE spells hit everyone the majority of the time without the need to do dual techs (combos), also, the damage doesn't scale like it should.
All your techs are equipped through spritenites, each character will have designated slots to equip either support, command. Some slots can do both. The amount available will vary depending on your level and and how they procc will vary on your talismans, and a lot of command spritenites are character specific.
To obtain said spritenites, you will need to kill mobs that yield materials, and those material drops are affected by how you kill mobs. Those ways vary from the spells you use to kill them, their applied debuff at their time of death, which element you used to kill them, if you used a momentum... to how over you went over their left over HP with your finishing blow. This makes farming tedious and eventually impossible as you will get OP and finishing off early lv mobs will be impossible with higher lv characters (while there is eventually a way to fix this, it's still dumb idea).
There is also a spacing problem. By this I mean that many areas are very tight, making you have to fight nearly every enemy you meet. While it is encouraged to do so, the game sometimes sends you mobs that are extremely powerful that can pretty much wipe your party within a couple of turns.
An interesting system is the flux and support bonuses. I won't get into more than saying it's a complete mess. It doesn't feel right, and it's not always guaranteed procc, making the idea to grind kind of stupid. Or maybe I am and never gasped it enough.
Yet another system they did (this one right), was the momentum system. When it is a character's turn, you can either idle or take action, each character has an individual ''token'' or ''bubble'' (momentum) that fills up. Once that gauge is full, you get a momentum point to spend whenever you choose (up to 3 can be stacked). To activate momentum, simply press the button at the right time to activate its bonus (extra dmg, heal on hit, mp recovery, mitigated dmg, etc), those bonuses feel right and are easy to strategize.
But to me, the OP heals, the random mobs that can annihilate your squad, the odd spacing and the odd story progression all felt off.
Not gonna mention the ingredients that lay around the map to make food.

Graphics: While initially well presented and cute, you quickly realise it doesn't offer much variety. Many moves look very similar and most environments look way too alike to have a wow factor.

Audio: I remember this game being praised for its soundtrack and vibe, but it got on my nerves hella fast. Don't get me wrong, I like piano... But when 99% of the game consists of piano tracks, it gets bothersome. The sound effects aren't too great either. And as for voice overs, they are mostly grunts and short quips whenever a character gets hit, healed, before and after battles.

I wanted to like this game. I just never could get into it and I couldn't wait for it to be over. I would strongly recommend the traditional ones like FF6, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Grandia 2, etc., over this title. Sorry Setsuna.

i got very sucked into this game. i liked the snowy atmosphere. the music set the mood nicely. the story in general was interesting. i liked all the characters except for setsuna who's entire personality was getting others to believe in the power of friendship. the gameplay wasn't too challenging, but it could certainly be tricky in some cases if you didn't have a good strategy. overall a pleasant experience :)

The music serves as the perfect companion to your journey, compelling you to see the story through to its conclusion. I know some people hated it, but for me it's a big W.

Having just completed it, I'm already experiencing a sense of nostalgia - a testament to how effectively the game creates a lasting impression despite its shortcomings.

When I first build my PC in 2016, this was one of the first games I bought and played. After hours of grinding for the love it, i realized how much I enjoyed my time with the game, its mechanics, atmosphere, and music. So I decided it would be fitting, given the game's themes, to hold off from beating it until I retire my first PC as a "daily driver". Before I started the building process on my 2nd PC, I redownloaded the game, forgot most of what the abilities were and why I grinded so much, then apparently got the most resonate to-me ending as a result of how I felt I should play the ending.

A journey nearly 8 years in the making, and I intuitively earned a couple rare achievements as a result.

IF one were remember anything about this game years later, it is the soundtrack, constant winter, and the journey. Even though I have not played or beat the source inspiration, it is a great impression of what the ATB battle systems are like.

I really like the game's art style, but the combat made me dislike playing the game.
I finished the story because i heared that that was the game's strong point, but it did not feel worth it to push trougth just to see the whole plot and ending.

気軽に遊ぶためにsteam版も今回セールで購入した。

わたしは初回プレイ時
システムの理解もいまいちの中でクソゲーだなあと思いつつも
【払った分は取り戻す！】と気合を入れてクリアまで遊んだ。
「あの頃のRPGは取り戻せなかったな。期待はずれだったな」という感想で終了した。

少しして
また遊びたくなった。
今度はシステムも十分に理解していて味わいながら遊んだ。
遊ぶ時の心象もすごく影響するゲームなのだろうか。
すごく楽しめたのである。

きっとこのゲームは予算を確保できない中で作られたのは間違いないだろう。
しかし製作者の熱量がその限られた中にも確かに存在しているのだ。
そこに私の心が反応して好きになったのだろうか。

そうなのだ。
今わたしはこのゲームが大好きだ。

Unfulfilled potential is probably how I'd describe Setsuna, or a beginners JRPG. It's got all the components to make a good rpg. Decent story, potentially interesting battle mechanics. It just didn't quite reach the end there. I'm left wondering is that all there is to this game? Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

I really enjoyed this game. It's nice to play a JRPG that doesn't go on forever, at the same time the game offers little variation. I liked the pacing, combat and crafting/selling. And of course the reasons I got the game, snow and piano music. Now, for the things that annoyed me: there's guides in the game but at shops instead of the menu. There's a beastipedia but only for item drops and lore, not for HP and elemental weaknesses, which was important in battle. The area of attacks aren't shown in combat and even after beating the game I don't know how to rest! At points in the story I found myself with full stats, otherwise it was use an item or level up.
I loved the fact that there was NO sexualisation of the characters.

I had problems to play with a controller, square enix released the game without supporting it.

And for the game, the story does not make sense and it's a shame, "I am Setsuna" is not a bad game, it has a lot of potential, but square enix did no care of the state of this game,

I am Setsuna is a classic JRPG that brings back the genre’s traditional mechanics and look. It has a familiar Active Time Battle (ATB) combat system, a cozy isometric art style with some modern flair, and a story that follows well-known JRPG tropes.

The story is decent although lacking in substance and could probably be told in about 30 minutes. Much of the game is spent doing inconsequential chores and errands for others in-order to progress the journey slightly. The main character, Endir, has an interesting backstory, but his purpose quickly take a backseat to Setsuna’s, which makes him feel a bit pointless as the game goes on. Like many JRPGs, the big lore dump happens near the end, so while the ending is satisfying, the pacing feels off.

Visually, this game is quite beautiful. I am Setsuna opts for tableau style visual design, muted colour palettes to emphasize the snowy winter felings, with subtle splashes of colour, which all really enhance the classic isometric feel and graphical stylings. The 3D on pseudo 2D static backgrounds makes it feel like a modern take on classic PS1 RPGs. It's really well-done.

The soundtrack stands out as something unique. An entirely piano-driven score, more subtle than the usual epic JRPG soundtracks. It’s an interesting choice, but it can feel repetitive—I ended up turning down the volume after a while.

The combat maintains a traditional feel, offering both an active and "wait" option for players preferring a slower pace. Enemies move around the battle screen, adding an element of timing for AoE attacks reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. The momentum system, which requires timed button presses to enhance attacks, adds some engagement, though the “Flux” system—intended to trigger random bonuses for your talismans—felt inconsistent and ultimately inconsequential. Character customization depends on equipping skills in talisman-dependent slots, which felt cumbersome and less satisfying than other JRPG systems. I wasn't really a huge fan of this system, and found myself still confused by Flux at the end of the game.

Overall, I am Setsuna is a relaxed, low-stakes game. While the story may not be particularly memorable, the beautiful art and nostalgic feel make it enjoyable, especially for fans of classic JRPGs looking for a familiar experience.

This game is almost really good, but has just enough major flaws to make it painful.

Position matters in the combat system but there is no way to rearrange your positions and only a couple of non-reliable ways to rearrange the enemies. This means that fights, such as boss fights, can be much easier or much harder randomly based on where your party meanders to. Once your party has meandered to a bad position, there is nothing to fix it.

I admire the old style save system, where you use actual save points and actually have to reload to past saves, but they give almost no save points and no warning before large fights or other events that will lock you in. Meaning that you just have to obsessively save in the world map even when you have no reason to suspect its necessary or else you will be redoing a lot of scenes (non-skippable) and battles.

Related to no saves, there are upgraded monsters that you can chose to fight like many rpg systems in order to challenge yourself. This is normally a thing I like. There is almost no way to tell if a monster is going to be one of these really hard upgraded optional bosses or not and there is no flee and they are often in the middle of an area so if you think your encountering a totally normal monster and arent you have to repeat the whole area.

Sometimes the writing is good. The protagonists dialogue options are pretty funny. Sometimes the writing is really bad. Its a mix. I did not find it consistently good enough to overcome the painful gameplay issues.

Positives:
Classic narrative mostly turned based rpgs, there just aren't enough of those in the world so if those are your jam, like they are mine, it might be worth it to you. Save a lot. Grind more than you'd like. Save before entering and after leaving every single town or dungeon area in case you learn you just needed a different party member for that unadvertised fight.

Great to fill time, its very peaceful if your grinding and wandering around.
