Pretty on the outside boring on the inside. There isn't much game here just mundane tasks over and over again. Some upgrades are pointless, why upgrade intensity of your head rip off suction if you can just get an instant headbutt upgrade. Head health regenerates anyway so additional health points is meaningless. Propulsion upgrades just decreases how long this slogs on, if you enjoy back tracking you'll enjoy this. On a more positive note it has an interesting concept, pretty animations and unique outlook on what the guys who holidayed on little saint james will end up as. 2/10

这游戏真有意思，未来人类抛弃了身体，只有一个头部（飞头人）！可以拼在各种奇怪的机器身体上！
当飞行头套在普通市民机器人身上就获得了普通人权限，能打开灰色门，附身在狗狗头上变成dog，附身在地图AI上解锁周边房间地图，还有各类需要飞行头的接口解锁技能。
还有各种升级、收集要素。

可惜这游戏的角色居然没法跳跃，大概是机器人太重了吧···

附身在红橙黄绿蓝紫色…N种不同颜色的士兵上能打开不同颜色的门甚至还附带不同颜色的光束枪！

玩家则扮演未来唯一的有血有肉的人类被唤醒···
并开始莫名的逃亡之旅。

主线+支线任务，支线不多。

剧情流水账：

开局选择飞头人，星棺号飞行艇内，主角被厄尔从冬眠中唤醒了！厄尔直接通过无线形式和主角头盔联系并告诉主角现在牧羊犬（组织）的头领玛士撒拉正想抓住主角，因此主角需要逃离飞船，至于原因，厄尔也不知道。

1、
厄尔操控机械臂将主角的飞头装到机器身体上开始指导主角行动，在未来主角的飞头可以随时替换身体，甚至还能强行拆除敌人的飞行头将自己的飞行头装上去！也能将飞行头装在特定装置上进行手动控制（比如电梯、机关等···）！通过守卫身体使用红色武器射击门可以通过红色门（整个飞船只有红门）。

过程中会学会如何使用飞头牵引能力将敌人的头拔出。

前往逃生舱的时候发现防卫激光封锁了前往逃生舱的路，需要先前往舰桥关闭激光，然后回到逃生舱逃离飞船。

逃离飞船的时候原来的飞行艇也被厄尔直接从内部boom了。

厄尔也告诉主角幕后黑手是人类很久以前造出来的先进电脑玛士撒拉，它控制了一切并将大家的意识转移到机械傀儡身体上，战争让世界不适合生存但傀儡能永生。

主角是最后一个有血有肉的人类了，厄尔和其他人正想办法对付玛士撒拉让人类恢复以前的样子！

可主角也好不到哪去，厄尔正准备远程操控他的逃生舱时逃生舱引擎突然失控并撞向了空间站。

2、
主角从空间站中苏醒后开始准备逃离空间站。

在空间站中主角解锁了地图功能和技能点升级，并进入娱乐港混入公共区域。

这里干扰严重，主角需要先前往卫星小屋然后调整5个卫星接收器清除干扰稳定和厄尔的信号。

过程中会遇到橙色门，需要比红色机器人强的橙色机器人。

信号稳定后厄尔让主角寻找供电房，恰好档案室就在供电房边上，运气好说不定能看看主角被追捕的原因。

过程中会遇到绿色门，需要做双色牧人犬支线任务能遇到。
还会解锁飞头人加速！
还会遇到带电地面以及橡胶轮机器人。
还得解开电梯锁，拆除水晶停止能源供应解锁···

先解锁的电梯是档案室，进入档案室后需要配合档案室负责人杀戮女皇玩着玩国际象棋的小游戏，其实就是使用不同的棋子身体下载不同数据后上传给厄尔，中间需要避开或消灭敌对棋子。

最后会面对杀戮女皇Boss战，战斗过后厄尔的援军姗姗来迟带主角离开···

3、
主角被露西亚-13的女儿克里斯托-9送到了他们基地叛乱之眼。
她们和厄尔合作，从厄尔那解密的档案馆那得知她们的身体都被存放在月球的研究基地，她们要去月神城堡。并给主角一个傻乎乎的身体。

这是一个高度发达的未来，人类全部换上了机械身体，所有人身上都有芯片（欧米茄宝石）并被玛士撒拉和她的爪牙牧羊犬们控制，在厄尔的帮助下一部分人拆除了芯片（欧米茄宝石），但大部分人很难拆除或者拆除后失去了些东东。
没了宝石她们就断网了，战斗中凉了就彻底凉了，所以她们都把头颅焊死在身上！

在叛乱之眼主角能解锁过充能技能，能冲破一些障碍们。

打开月神城堡传送门，消灭来犯牧羊犬前往月神城堡。

4、
到达月神城堡，可传输出现异常主角们都被分散到各地。
厄尔从档案中发现有个团队在使用意识转移设备制造奇特的人工智能，这个项目叫玛士撒拉项目。而主角叫温特斯，也是项目参与者之一。

顺带帮雅典娜-7收集各类机器人。

大伙在这里没找到身体，但主角找到了自己的冷冻仓狮体！
厄尔看兜不住了只好坦白说主角是克隆体，还是个小哑巴，是他发现了主角，现在他和主角约见在月球停机坪。

到达停机坪厄尔说出真相，厄尔（ERL）是一台电脑，是紧急救援保障系统的缩写，他的任务是当玛士撒拉出现问题时接管系统。
厄尔认为玛士撒拉一直在找创造他的那个人类意识，他只找到主角，那时候主角快狗带了。厄尔猜测那时候玛士撒拉克隆了一个主角。
厄尔尽可能控制局面，并给克里托斯-9尽力扭转局势的指令后用自己的飞船撞向更大的玛士撒拉的球形飞船凉了···

5、
回叛乱之眼见克里托斯-9，对付希望主角飞入玛士撒拉的飞船内部，因为之前厄尔撞击时飞船出现了一个缺口。她希望主角入侵玛士撒拉核心找到她们的身体。

通过远程传输器进入玛士撒拉的飞船，一路冲到Boss房！
中间玛士撒拉会用语言忽悠主角，不过主角也从中得知他想要找到他缺失的东西。
这里用到跟多的还是飞头，会应对好几次封锁，先面对门禁操作员，只要按照特定顺序攻击音符即可。

接着面对最终boss玛士撒拉泰坦！

消灭它之后再走一段路到达玛士撒拉主机前，对付想要和主角链接并占据主角来获取他缺失的东西，他的系统即将奔溃，而主角也不再是肉体而是电路，因此打算用他重置主角···

最终主角说了一句：“都是胡说”摧毁了主机。

A doubly fine game. A wacky story, fun characters, interesting combat, great aesthetic, fully voice acted and lots of puns.
I hesitate to call it a metroidvania though, but i guess that's just me. Also 60fps lock is kinda meh.

Is this a hidden gem? Nah. Is it fun? Yeah, it's pretty fun.

Headlander is a Metroidvania where you play as a rocket-powered disembodied head that can suck off the heads of robots to steal their bodies. When you're sans a body, you have free vertical and horizontal movement but have no offensive capabilities; when you have a body you'll get access to guns (and dancing). The gunplay is... there. You'll spam a lot of lasers. They'll make pretty colors. Things will explode.

The Metroidvania aspects of the game rely less on acquired skills and more on the bodies that you steal. Doors have clearance levels and you'll have to find and steal bodies with the appropriate clearance levels to open doors. You'll still get new skills but they don't feel as consequential as they do in other Metroidvania games.

The presentation is great. It oozes 1970s kitsch and the graphics still hold up today. It's humorous without being annoying but the writing isn't as strong as Double Fine's other games.

I'd recommend playing this if it looks interesting to you. This was published by Adult Swim Games so there's no telling how long you'll be able to purchase it, which is a real shame.

许久没有玩到过如此怪诞而又诙谐的游戏，不得不说这个游戏非常的有特点。由于我之前玩过一些其他有占据玩法的游戏，加上游戏的宣传视频满是子弹和闪躲腾挪，导致我一直认为这是一个偏向于弹幕的射击游戏，所以吃灰了很久一直没有去玩。而它实际上的主题是动作+谜题，射击只是一种玩法元素，这并不是一个躲子弹的游戏。
游戏的故事主题是一个[b]出现故障的自动化集权AI管理着机械飞升的人类意识[/b]，而后主角与逃脱控制的个体一起推翻统治者并试图找回肉体和人性。乍一看题材好像有点意思，但游戏的前[b]75%[/b]以上的内容，你几乎不会感受到这个游戏有什么剧情，似乎它的故事只是一个用来展开游戏内容解锁后续关卡的工具，直到进度达到[b]95%[/b]你才终于能明白它这盘饺子究竟是为了什么而包，尤其是最终通关后所展现出的哲思和立意，这个反差让人有点难绷。

游戏的核心玩法是摧毁敌人的脑袋，占据敌人的身体，然后前往这个身体所允许抵达的区域，并摧毁下一个身体比你更高级的敌人的脑袋，所有关卡都是以此循环来实现它的“类银河战士”要素。它的玩法设计其实有点单一，它的机制没有拓展，只是在外面裹上了一层更厚的面包糠，但好在它的机制不常见，游戏风格、操作手感、内容种类以及整体协调性做的不错，所以不至于显得太过普通。而且这个游戏的对话台词非常有意思，[b]对话全配音[/b]更是难得，不同类型的身体与同一个NPC对话还有不同的台词，以及各种非战斗类身体搞怪的[b]舞蹈动作[/b]。可以说这些加分项拯救了这个游戏。就连通关后不同区域的NPC都还有[b]新的配音对话[/b]，在这种体量的游戏里，闻所未闻

Great creative spin on the Metroid concept. Being able to pop the head off of just about any robot that has one and pilot the body around leads to some really goofy situations. It also allows for a type of puzzle that the original Metroid couldn't have because you either have access to the tools or you don't. In Headspace, if you need a certain body to solve a puzzle, head out and find that body to bring back to the puzzle room.

I had a great time playing this game. It was short, but tons of fun while it lasted. 8.5/10.

It's a very gentle recommend. There's a lot to love about the style and aesthetic and the game will keep you suitably entertained for its duration. However it is ultimately a bit shallow, it feels like aspects and elements of the gameplay and such should evolve as you play the game except it doesn't really. But I did enjoy it enough to complete it with an overall positive feeling.

From what I got with Headlander, I really cannot express how zany, fun and creative a title like this is. While it has been a while since playing this game, I'm really impressed how they handled areas like the world and its bizarre/dark humour and especially the combat.

There's always a surprise and charm to be had in this game and I do insanely recall an amazing part of the game where you come out feeling like a total BOSS by the end of it (no spoilers, heh).

Along with the phenomenal soundtrack that blends the future sci-fi and the retro feel of the bit of the 1960's vibe in there, there is so much that this game does to bring in the best possible experience for a gamer.

I also might suggest something like this to someone who is a Star Trek fan. I'm not even a Star Trek fan and I feel this fits that original Star Trek series so dastardly well. Double Fine really provided a unique vision and a one-of-a-kind experience here. Not a game of the year, but absolutely a gem you would be foolish not to have on your shelf. <3

Hikayesi geyik, tabiki çok zor değil ancak çok muhteşem de değil. Keyifli vakit geçirmenize yetiyor. Oyunun genel geyik tonu ile de uyumlu bir anlatıcı ve diyalog mevcut.

Oyunun aksiyon tarafı basit ve çok keyifli değil ancak oyunun daha çok olayı ufak bulmacaları çözerek hikayeyi ilerletmek üzerinde ilerliyor. Ele geçirdiğiniz robotlar ile güvenlik protokolü dolayısı ile ilerleyemediğiniz kapıları açarak ilerliyorsunuz. Örneğin sadece yeşil protokole sahip kapılar sadece yeşil güvenlik robotlarına açılıyor.

1-2 tane boss savaşı var ancak oyunun aksiyon tarafı çok önde olmadığı için bu boss savaşları da çok keyifli diyemem.

Headlander is a genuinely great game!

A crazy and funny robot story tinted in a retro-futuristic style.
Despite being a metroidvania, you don't have the basic jump ability but instead your head flies around like from Futurama.
The lack of jump additionally creates more space for environmental platforming puzzles.

For a metroidvania it is quite light and short, can be completed in 5-6 hours.
(ignore my 18hrs, I fell asleep due to medicine again)

The dance moves are funky and different body Types you can take over are all unique and funny.

Such an underrated gem, I wouldn't have know if not for the rankings video on YT by "Cannot be Tamed".

Text Review:
-This game is a unique, odd take on the metroidvania as you can't even jump, and you play as a flying head that takes over bodies by sucking off their heads and then landing to take over their powers like Kirby (But not as weird or fanciful... you can get the ability to fire lasers with different spread patterns or take over a small body to get in a tiny hole etc.)
-But each body has its own dance you can activate by pressing a button (Unique music track included) which is one of the lovely quirky touches of the game (Who doesn't love the moonwalk)
-Rather pleasantly the game styles itself after the 70s (Instead of gamings' much more common 80s fetishism) with its shag carpet, lava lamps etc.
-And the 2.5D visuals are great (Arguably a better attempt at incorporating 3D into a 2D metroidvania because of the rigid movement... at least before the more mobile Prince of Persia metroidvania came along) and has nice backgrounds, a nice soft quality and sometimes cinematic angles
-The music is good enough (Can be generic sci-fi but it can ram home the beauty of space feel and the tracks that play during dances are a bit more 70s fun... unfortunately these two approaches rarely combine because when it does the result is interesting)
-Good voice acting (The robots sound and feel alive... sure not that surprising as their voices weren't distorted too much to robotify them) but voice actors obviously get reused, and the robot speak can have a scratchy, piercing quality (But hey Invader Zim is one of the voices)
-The story is a bit functional though (If it has one or two satisfying moments and the bots are likeable but talking to them is optional)
-The game is very stylish but arguably that's what keeps you going as there isn't really a movement challenge, secrets are easy to find and short, backtracking is removed to a large extent (That is probably a unique pro though for this genre), laser aiming can be finicky, active use abilities are fairly late game and by that time you may not want to start to use them and the headlanding doesn't give as much variety as Kirby probably would have

Practical Concerns:
-Good value (R2.00/ $0.19/ £0.14 per hour for me)
-Not the smallest (3.55 Gb)
-Not the easiest to run (Almost works on the warhorse)

Headlander is a kinda-metroidvania where you play as a severed head with jets in it that let you fly around. There are doors that require you to be in a body in order to cross. Sometimes, your body's color needs to correspond with that of the door in order to cross (e.g. if the door is green, then you must be in a green body). Some of these bodies carry guns, which you can use to shoot enemies. As you progress, you unlock combat abilities for both your head form and when you're controlling a body.

Almost everything about this game is good, but not particularly excellent-- good gameplay, good puzzles, good music, etc. Avoid this game if you're looking for a challenge, or an above-average story (I honestly ignored the story altogether, could not bring myself to care). But if you feel like playing a chill, funny, and unique game with an absolutely gorgeous and fairly unique aesthetic, then this is a hit.

TLDR: A short, simple, and competent metroidvania oozing with style.

What a curious little metroidvania. In this game, you are a head. Just a floating head, and you have to float around a space station, taking over robots of various ranks, to navigate through and save the cryogenically frozen bodies. It also has a strange retro 70s space aesthetic. The play control is good--the head moves around nicely. I'd say it's pretty fun to play.

It's a fun and original Metroidvania where you can't jump, but you can fly and possess other bodies thanks to your flying head. There is everything you need: colourful graphics, some humor, a gradually scaling difficulty, some not too hard puzzles, secret areas (not too hard to find), upgrades (not hard to get), and a final boss fight. Cutscenes are a few and unobtrusive. Only now I get the highlander/headlander joke...
A 10 hours ride you'll be thankful to have been on.

Headlander is a light and enjoyable Metroidvania that doesn’t require a high skill level or extensive time commitment. If you’re thinking of something as challenging as Hollow Knight, this isn’t quite on the same level. I managed to unlock all the achievements in under 12 hours over two days, which is noteworthy because I’m not typically quick at finishing games.

The story is cool. I didn’t laugh much, honestly, but I enjoyed the characters and the arc as a whole. The mechanic of taking over bodies is unique and interesting, though I did wish for more variety in the types of bodies you can control. While there are different types, most of them function similarly, just with increasing power.

If you have a day or two free and are looking for something quick to play without a huge commitment, Headlander is worth a try. It offers something different, but without being too demanding. Overall, it’s a fun and accessible game that’s perfect for a short, satisfying experience.

I totally missed this game when it came out.
I got it for really cheap.

Great game. I feel like it is one of the best metroidvanias I have played. It's not too long and takes about 6 hours or so. There are a lot of small upgrades that you find on the map, and a lot of upgrades you get with skill points that you collect as you explore. The length felt just about right. You get a lot of upgrades without it dragging on for too long. Not sure the concept would have worked for a twenty hour game or so. Highly recommended.

Despite the game being totally lacklustre (I don't really like its one or its setting, and the rest is meh at best), I decided to push through.

That is, until the game decided to softlock me on the wrong side of a bunch of lasers in the Luna Citadel.

Thank you, game, for making the choice for me.

EDIT: Turns out this was not actually a softlock - it simply required the use of an artificial mechanic that was never properly introduced at that point. Which is even worse, if you ask me.

Завязка игры весьма остроумна и увлекательно депрессивна. Действие происходит в далеком будущем, на гедонистической космической станции, где самопровозглашенный праотец человечества — всемогущий суперкомпьютер Мафусаил играется со своей личной (анти)утопией.

Люди давно уже вымерли, загрузив свои сознания на жесткие диски механических тел. Наш протагонист по фамилии Винтерс — последний человек из плоти и крови. Плоти, правда, осталось совсем немного: одна голова, упакованная в космический шлем на ракетной тяге.

На обрубке шеи Винтерса висит ответственность — сбросить власть машин и снова сделать людей людьми. Потому что это излюбленная тема 70-х — борьба с тиранией и возврат к природе.

Headlander — двухмерный платформер. Ваша голова летает по уровням и пристыковывается ко всему подряд, потому что в будущем произошла тотальная унификация разъемов. Вы можете активировать механизмы, поднимать-опускать лифты и, конечно, сажать свою голову на чужие тела. Женские, мужские, собачьи.

По космической станции бродят роботы-пастухи, стерегущие человеческий “скот”. Они — ваша основная добыча. С помощью встроенного вакуумного пылесоса отрывайте им головы и берите управление на себя. Стреляйте из их бластеров по их же коллегам, а в случае опасности бросайте ненужное тело и прячьтесь в каком-нибудь узком техническом отсеке.

В теории всё это звучит потрясающе. В техническом плане задумка реализована превосходно. Но, к сожалению, здешний геймплей совершенно не эволюционирует, и на десятом часу Headlander играется почти так же, как на первом. Разве что с каждой минутой игра становится всё проще. Вы всегда чувствуете себя хозяином положения. Обезглавливать врагов или расстреливать — это не тактическое решение, а сиюминутный каприз.

Легкость игре простить можно, тем более что это вопрос субъективный. А вот однообразие — куда более серьёзная проблема.

Формально Headlander — это метроидвания, но её прохождение однозначно линейно, и у игрока нет никаких причин возвращаться в изученные зоны. На всю космическую станцию найдётся всего три бездумных побочных задания, с которыми ни в коем случае не следует связываться. Уровни испещрены “тайниками”, наглядно помеченными на вашей карте. Да и награды, которые вы можете в них найти, просто сделают вас ещё сильнее и выносливее, а игровой процесс — ещё тривиальнее. И скучнее.

Единственная настоящая преграда, которую Headlander ставит перед игроком — это неумение механических тел прыгать и карабкаться. На первый взгляд, никаких проблем это доставить не должно, ведь мы в любой момент можем отправиться в полёт. Но не всё так просто.

Наши враги окрашены во все цвета радуги, обозначающие их воинские звания. Для разных роботов открываются соответствующие их званию (и званиям их подчинённых) двери. Для фиолетового, например, открыты все замки. К каждой цветной двери нужно подтаскивать соответствующую тушку. И вот тут игра превращается в настоящую головоломку. Порой интересную, порой утомительную и непродуктивную.

Сюжет игры более-менее исчерпывается её синопсисом. Мы знаем что нужно делать, и мы это делаем. Никаких сюрпризов на пути не предвидится. Винтерс не может ни с кем разговаривать, его гид-опекун безустанно бормочет что-то по громкой связи, а все остальные персонажи монотонно отыгрывают свои комические подпрограммы.

Студия Double Fine у многих людей ассоциируется с её основателем и руководителем, Тимом Шейфером. А он, в свою очередь, знаменит своими шутками и никогда не появляется на людях, не надев заранее фирменную шутовскую персону. Соответственно, для его студии юмор — это бренд. Игры DF обязаны быть смешными, даже если Шейфер не имеет к их созданию никакого отношения.

Одно время DF пытались издавать игры других разработчиков, и под рекламными трейлерами этих проектов люди всё равно писали “Ага, старина Тим опять за своё!”

Автор Headlander Ли Петти — один из ветеранов DF, художник-постановщик Brutal Legend и Broken Age, режиссёр Stacking и Rad. Но большинство покупателей не знают такого имени и не читают титров.

Double Fine = Шейфер. Шейфер = смешно. Дайте нам смешно!

И Headlander даёт.

Маленькие роботы-пылесосы относятся к уборке как к войне и постоянно выкрикивают кровожадные лозунги. Компьютер, открывающий двери, любит словесные каламбуры, которые повторяет каждый раз когда мы переходим из комнаты в комнату. ИИ, управляющий боевыми турелями — пацифист. Свои обязанности он выполняет с глубоким сожалением, о чём регулярно нам сообщает.

"Регулярно" — в этом суть проблемы. Несмотря на порядочный запас реплик, подобные шутки довольно скоро начинают повторяться и приедаться. К тому же, к темам или событиям игры они не имеют прямого отношения и существуют только потому, что сценаристы DF панически боятся показаться несмешными.

Кроме роботов-комедиантов станцию населяют железные "люди". Но большинство обывателей пребывают в наркотической эйфории и в разговорах участвовать не способны.

Неугомонный юмор в стиле Шейфера работает когда он соответствует обстоятельствам и изобретательно вплетается в сюжетные диалоги. В данном случае им покрывают почти готовый продукт, как обжора заливает изысканное блюдо майонезом. Юмор белым шумом заполняет весь диапазон вашего восприятия. Юмор душит драму, выпихивает её из гнезда. Он не подчеркивает, а отвлекает. Не погружает, а отстраняет.

Но зачем обращать внимания на слова или геймплей, когда на игру можно просто любоваться? Её интерьеры рассказывают свою историю, увлекательную и по-настоящему смешную. Оказывается, Headlander способен быть смешным. Не на поверхностном, а на концептуальном уровне.

Ли Петти обожает фантастику 70-х. Как он сам говорит: “НФ в 70-е балансировала между экзистенциальным страхом перед высокими технологиями и полнейшим идиотизмом”. Так что своим коллегам он велел всё время спрашивать себя при работе с новыми идеями: достаточно ли это глупо? Если в концепции слишком много “Космической одиссеи”, её нужно разбавить порцией “Барбареллы”. “Клёво” и “глупо” должны пребывать в гармонии.

Первый трейлер игры был положен на песню Дэвида Боуи Space Oddity, а итоговый продукт весь пронизан эстрадной крикливостю и гламурным декадансом. Модели андроидов, — стильные, манерные, одновременно гиперсексуальные и андрогинные, — готовы с нажатием кнопки пуститься в пляс, как герои “Лихорадки субботнего вечера”.

Они по самые антенны накачаны электронными депрессантами. Пускают слюни на психоделические узоры в мониторах, самозабвенно дрыгаются на цветастых дискотеках, корчатся от истомной скуки в дизайнерских креслах.

Интерьеры и реквизит — всё состоят из волнистых и кривых линий, окружностей, овалов. Это эстетический бунт против рационального угловатого модернизма.

Компьютеры — это тысячи разноцветных кнопочек, огоньков, экранчиков. Перфокарты, магнитные ленты, огромные катушки. Пиршество для глаз, столько всего лишнего, столько прелестных аналоговых деталей.

Повсюду оранжереи — тропические растения цветут в космосе, как в прихожих застойных советских госучреждений. В лавовых лампах размером с дом плавают монструозные куски парафина. Гигантский кальян, символизирующий изысканное прожигание жизни, тянет шланги как щупальца во все стороны…

Но я должен держать себя в руках! Я не имею права забывать как немыслимо скучно мне было заканчивать эту игру. Сражаться с боссом, которому можно проиграть только по невнимательности и неосторожности. Слушать диалоги, которые не вызывают у меня никакого эмоционального отклика…

Но вы видели как божественно стилизованы игровые меню? Как обалденно анимирован логотип на титульном экране? Как за героем остаётся гипнотический разноцветный шлейф? Может я всё-таки сумею себя убедить, что игра мне нравится?

Setting and art direction: 15/10, fantastic production design. Looks so cool, love it.

Everything else: 4/10. The incredibly tedious and annoying gameplay loop basically amounts to "get this yellow keycard (body) to this door yellow door" except there's no puzzles to how to get the yellow keycard, just incredibly lacklustre re-spawing combat, oh and by the way, they keycard (your body) can take damage and be destroyed, so be prepared to backtrack from room to room to get a new one a TON.

The level design is almost non existent, just beautifully decorated but gameplay-empty room after beautifully decorated but gameplay-empty room, chained together in what is mapped out like a metroidvania, but contains very little inter connectivity, and no alternate means of traversal, just a few hard locks.

other thoughts:
-The "funny" audio cues from enemies and sassy locked doors trigger waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to often once you get past the first 30 min, and frequently when you are nowhere near the thing supposedly being triggered. It's incredibly grating after just a few minutes, and turns the sounds into a cacophony of irrelevance.
-Making the undercooked gameplay worse, the visual feedback is terrible on almost everything. Where you are aiming, if you are in a good spot to pull off a head, which colour of body you have under certain lighting conditions, when enemies are going to attack, even just where you are on screen, all of it is attractive but barely functional. This is all compounded by the zoom level constantly changing, breaking any sense of spatial continuity from room to room. Despite this constant and unnecessary movement of the camera, it's almost always zoomed way too far in, which let's you see the models, but not the enemy who is shooting you from 15 feet away. It's nearly impossible to discern which parts of the set are interactive, meaning there basically can't be any secrets, because everything looks like is should be a secret. This means the powerups and secret rooms are signposted literal marked doors and the same hatch design for almost all of them. You don't need to explore because there's almost nothing to discover, and what they want you to discover has to be made hyper obvious to stand out from the busy backgrounds.
-I'm glad I played this, because it's almost a checklist of what not to do when designing a sidescroller/ 2D game. After playing it is actually easy to understand how each wrong decision didn't sound bad on paper, but together it's just really not very good finished product. When I'm trying to articulate why a certain aspect of a game is bad in the future, I'll be able to think of the unique frustrations and quality of life issues that made playing headlander such a disappointment. I'm sure a huge amount of the issues boil down to a lack of time and money, but the most core issues are that they didn't get make the gameplay fun before starting, so the lack of story, and linear, boring levels have nothing to fall back on. The lack of puzzles and adventure game style world exploration are particularly frustrating because a lot of the same people made Stacking, which has a similar core mechanic, but is really clever and fun.

Overall 5/10. It'st not awful, but it is a failure in every way except for art direction.

Most specifically I with 3, 4 or 5 robots shooting at me keep on dying in less than the amount of time needed to even orient myself in this psychedelic ricocheting neon laser-beam orgasm. A potentially nice puzzle-platformer which is however destroyed by the "action".

It's a pretty good game, has a nice concept and the combat while serviceable can be quite satisfying as well.

You essentially play as a head that can detach and re-attach from bodies, you can even posses the body or a robot dog at one point; it's a unique title that's filled with humour and a nice story in typical Double Fine fashion. Having said that, I do think the game is a bit easy and this in turn makes me feel as if the devs should've added some difficulty settings for people that wanted more of a challenge.

Either way, recommend.

A below average metrovania.

The way this game distinguishes itself from other metrovania's is that you can take control of enemies/NPCs by means of ripping of their head and landing your head on their body. While a fun mechanic at first it quickly just devolves into a series of body fetch quests, where the only challenge is not letting the body get destroyed.

The combat is shooting other robots that just shot random bouncy lasers. This results in combat that is a joke but every once in a while a bunch of lasers will bounce in such a way that you die.

The exploration is fun but quickly gets replaced by the body fetch quests.

The story and puzzles are meh.

I really enjoyed the retro-futuristic graphic style and designs, some of the rooms are really cool.
The movement is good and it's fun to play, but don't expect a great combat challenge at any point. The game has more puzzle elements than combat, but not even complex puzzles, just get the right key for the right door kind of thing. The story didn't hit me as great neither, but some dialogs are funny.
Overall, if feels to me like it could have had more content, and some more bosses. Somehow it's lacking in gameplay and it doesn't feel very fulfilling, but it was an overall fun play. I'd recommend it to Metroidvania fans.

I honestly had no idea what I was getting into with this. I think I got it from a humble bundle years ago so I had zero expectation which honestly was refreshing.

So what is headlander? It's a metroidvania without jumping. It's a 70's disco with robots in space and you are a disembodied head that can hijack them and control their bodies to explore the space station as you try to figure out who you are and what is this society.

Game play is more puzzle as you try yo navigate your floating head to new areas of increasingly higher levels of access security. You gain the ability to suck off the heads of robots to then take control of them. Need to clear a red door, take over a red security drone body and no one is the wiser. While there is combat, it's the greatest or most precise. By end game you gain a share of power ups that make your own flying head a force to be reckoned with reflecting lasers and damaging boosters.

The game was short with about 6-7 hours of game play. Possibly longer if you 100% to find all collectibles and power ups. But for just a one time play, I found it novel and refreshing.

The hippy sci-fi stuff is cool. The possession mechanic feels fresh here.

Ultimately though, I don't like the almost puzzly feel of this. The platforming & Combat aspects are weak (thus far), and it feels very restrictive when trying to move around because you need to keep switching to the correct bodies. I know that's a deliberate choice, it just doesn't work for me personally.

Possibly recommend this to fans of Carrion, or people that have more patience, perhaps people into the puzzly sorts of Metroidvanias as well (Not that I really felt like I was solving puzzles).

This quirky 70-retro inspired sci-fi metroidvania is a fun experience to have all around with a charming sense of comedy. If you are unsure if metroidvanias are for you, this game is a shorter experience with my playthrough lasting about 6.5 hours after collecting absolutely everything. Double Fine does it again. This is their attempt at a Metroidvania styled game, and it hit the notes pretty well. While there's not as much backtracking, the reasonable amount of power-ups makes you want to find them all. As for plot, the story has good pacing which plays into the evolution of the look and feel of the environments you're put into. Without giving anything away, by the time you reach mid game, you feel comfortable with the controls, but they still have more fun features to throw at you to keep it fresh.
Lastly, we have to acknowledge that they had some wonderful artists on the team. Between iconic voice acting talent and artists that captured an 80s aesthetic, the stage is set for a feast for the senses.

Challenge: See if you can't find all of the references to the other Double Fine games.

🤔 Если вы всё-таки не поняли, о какой студии и мультфильмах идёт речь, то давайте я перечислю парочку картин, это даст хоть какое-то понимание происходящего. Для нового поколения это определенно [i]"Рик и Морти"[/i], для более "искушенного" зрителя это [i]"Южный парк"[/i], а для поколения нулевых это [i]"Футурама"[/i] и [i]"Гриффины"[/i]. Вообще тут можно перечислять очень много и очень долго... но мы этого делать не будем, а лучше перейдем к обзору игры.

👉 [b]"Головолёт"[/b] это своеобразная игра, которая пытается смешить диалогами и ситуациями. Мне сложно писать данный обзор, ведь по моему мнению действительно интересных моментов в игре просто нет. Как и нет [i]"бугагашенек"[/i] и присущих [b]Adult Swim[/b] высмеиваний всего и вся. Единственная фраза которая мне запомнилась это: [u]"БЕЛЫЙ - это новый черный"[/u]. Интерпретируйте её как вам будет угодно, но я вижу в ней лишь реверс.

🙄 Но тогда почему же обзор положительный? Геймплейно игра представляет собой облегченную версию любой метроидвании. У нас есть космическая база с закрытыми дверями, доступ к которым можно получить найдя улучшение (обычно по сюжету) или подойдя/выстрелив в нужном цвете. Да да, я написал всё правильно. По локациям шастают разноцветные роботы и двери будут открываться только при правильном цвете тела. Радуга все дела.... хотя погодите... у радуги же семь цветов, а тут только шесть.

Увидели пылесос или робо-пса так дерзайте, оторвите ему голову и прикрепитесь к телу, ведь благодаря этому можно попасть в секретные места. Летающие головы явно были почерпнуты из Футурамы. Различных [i]"тел"[/i] в игре предостаточно, можно даже побыть человеко-лошадью ♞ и скакать между комнатами на своих двоих попутно отстреливая других жестянок из лазера. Но помните, что это лошадь, а значит лазер стреляет буквой [b]"Г"[/b]. Не зря же тело обитает в шахматной секции (▄▀▄▀▄). Можно сказать, что такие моменты это основной плюс игры, но плюс не очень [i]"жирный"[/i].

😐 Сюжетно игра непримечательна. Конечно, при большом желании можно сравнить её с "Nier" и "Soma", но зачем? Цифровое сознание, мертвое человечество, безумные ИИ тут то же есть, но это всё незначительно. Концовка игры просто обрывается и не сгенерирует у вас никаких эмоций. Звуки в игре обычные, а вот графика и цвет соответствуют своим вдохновителям. Ожидайте [i]"обрезанную"[/i] радугу, эпилептические мигания (в отдельных местах) и неразбериху на экране при большом количестве врагов. Но при этом [i]"задники"[/i] в игре сделаны очень хорошо.
