An ancient terror has emerged from the depths of the ocean. Merga, a water dragon from Avalice's oldest and deadliest war, has been freed from her crystal prison as a consequence of the Kingdom Stone's destruction. This game deserves to be 1000x more popular than it is. Absurdly fun and fast-paced platforming that hugely improves and iterates on the first in every way, along with much longer and more fleshed-out levels and bosses. If you're even slightly intrigued, do yourself a favor and try it out. Both it and the first game are very reasonably priced for what they are.

Uma ótima sequência, realmente bastantes coisas novas e diferentes do 1° jogo que se destacam aqui.

Os personagens estão muito mais bem desenvolvidos aqui, no primeiro jogo eles já são carismáticos, aqui eles são mais ainda, o que faz você se apegar mais a eles. A Carol está bem mais legal e engraçadinha, fora que, pra mim, a Gameplay da Carol nesse jogo, não apenas está melhor que o primeiro jogo, como se tornou a minha favorita (Se você jogar bem com ela, dá pra sair rushando as fases, deve ter técnicas de speedrun ela, certeza). e a Milla também com uma gameplay melhorada do jogo antecessor, fora a nova integrante jogável, Neera (Particulamente não gostei da Gameplay dela, mas depende de cada um).

Nesse jogo, o mundo de Freedom Planet, ou, Avalice, é muito mais explorado. Diferente do primeiro jogo que não tem tantos personagens participantes, e com uma história mais linear, aqui tem todo um mundo, um mapa interligado, com Npcs, habitantes desse mundo, que torna aquele mundo mais vivo sabe.

Os antagonistas, ou vilões, são um dos pontos fracos desse jogo. As intuições deles não são boas, e tem uma escrita fraca, mas ainda tem momentos legais de alguns deles (O Aaa é bem cômico). A história do jogo não é lá grandes coisas, do tipo absolute cinema, como no primeiro. Ela é mais focada na origem daquele mundo de Avalice, é interessante, porque novamente, te faz se aprofundar mais naquele universo. E a antagonista principal, Merga, ela é boa. A VA dela fez um ótimo trabalho, deu bastante vida aos sentimentos da personagem, e a Boss fight final dela é muito boa, achei melhor que a do Brevon.

As fases do jogo são boas mas tem umas que são cansativas, e não acho que essa opção de escolher um episódio seja útil, afinal, todas seguem a mesma direção na história, não há alteração em algo na história. As fases também não podem ter aquela mesma criatividade que tinha no primeiro, que sempre acontecia uma coisa diferente e mudava o segmento, aqui elas apresentam uma mecânica e segue com ela durante a fase toda.

E a trilha sonora contém algumas faixas boas, mas para mim ainda não se compara a OST do primeiro jogo.

Enfim, é isso, Freedom Planet 2 merece sim sua atenção, afinal, ainda deve ter sido um jogo que deu muito trabalho, porquê, afinal, quase 8 anos de desenvolvimento, realmente.

This is an amazing game with so much heart and character. There are so many cute little details in everything, from the quirky banter between the girls and their adversaries to the game design itself. The music, voice acting, and sound design are all fantastic. You can tell they really had fun with it. FP2 is a clear passion project and worth your time.

El primer juego de por sí era una maravilla, pero creo que esta secuela le ha conseguido dar mil vueltas.
Su gameplay, banda sonora y los gráficos del juego son simplemente HERMOSOS.
Como todo buen juego independiente, tiene su dificultad y sus desafíos bastante bien puestos.

Hay cosas que no me han llegado a gustar del todo, la historia no es que sea mala, pero no me ha llegado a encajar tanto como la del primer juego, pero creo que es por la nueva antagonista; no digo que sea un mal personaje pero creo que Lord Brevon dejó el nivel demasiado alto... Aunque eso fue jugando con Lilac, la historia desde la perspectiva de Carol me gustó mucho más. Eso se debe a que la trama circula fuertemente en algo más personal para cada personaje: los orígenes de Lilac y Milla, Carol y su hermana, etc. Quizás si juego con los dos personajes restantes, termine por cambiar mi opinión completamente sobre la trama.

Hace cuatro años que salió este juego y quizás sea un tanto tarde para pedirlo, pero de verdad que me encantaría ver este juego en más idiomas. El juego anterior estaba también en español y me apena mucho que este se haya quedado solamente en el inglés.

[h1]The best "Sonic" game we've received in a long time.[/h1]
The original Freedom Planet was a fantastic 2D platformer that paid homage to its inspiration on the Genesis. I already thought the first game was excellent. This one's better in most ways, although you should absolutely still play the first game too.

Lilac, Carol and Milla return as playable characters from the first game, but now you can also play as Neera. Lilac and Carol are mostly similar to how they were before (barring visual overhauls and minor gameplay tweaks), although Carol now has a proper ranged attack which alleviates her biggest weakness from the first game. Milla now has a proper health full-sized health bar and she has actual melee combat, meaning that you no longer have to awkwardly crawl around to throw cubes at enemies at point-blank range and she can actually take a few hits this time. The new playable character, Neera, has a very different playstyle and she's the hardest character in the game to learn, but she has a lot of fun abilities that will reward you if you take the time to learn her. There's also a new "guard" mechanic, which is single-handedly one of the best additions in the game as it allows you to get a moment of invincibility to get out of a swarm of enemies, or find a faster way through a dangerous obstacle.

Just about everything in this game has taken a massive step up from the first game. There's so much more worldbuilding in this game, and the environment in this game feels more like a real place that people live in compared to the first game where the environments were definitely a bit "video game-y" at times. The new lead villain, Merga, is much more complex and has a proper backstory unlike Brevon from the first game who was essentially a big bad who landed on the planet and did "big bad things" with no real explanation. Story beats in this game are a huge improvement over the first game, but this game does unfortunately have a really bad tendency of [spoiler]changing character allegiances on the fly and expecting both the player and the characters to go along with it every time[/spoiler]. There's also new hub worlds, which don't really add that much other than being a place to add world flavor and segue into cutscenes, but I admire how much it adds to the atmosphere.

Overhauled is also the gameplay loop. The stages are shorter in this game, so they don't overstay their welcome, but there's a lot more of them. The lives have been significantly reworked. In this game, you now start with 2 lives in each stage regardless of how many you had at the end of the previous one and when you run out of health, you have the option of either going back to your last checkpoint with full health, or continuing right where you are with a sliver of health. This is a great system that prevents the player from becoming too comfortable or too frustrated and keeps the tension at a nice happy medium. You can now see boss health bars as you're fighting them so you know how close you are to killing them, and your elemental shields can now stack in health points. You also don't lose your fire shield anymore if you go underwater like you did in the first game.

There's also now a shop you can buy items from with the crystals you collect. Some of them make stages a little bit easier or harder in exchange for a smaller or bigger score and gem payout, although this system somewhat works against itself since you need gems to buy the items that make your life easier, but then those items also reduce your gem payout. Once you get good enough at the game, the shops don't really do that much unless you want to buy the negative items to chase higher scores. There however are still shops for things like vinyl records and the in-game museum. Unlike the first game, hidden and purchased collectable *do not* carry over across multiple save files.

The scale of everything in this game has been amped up so much. The adventure feels so much bigger. There's a lot more side content. The story is bigger and more believable. The world has gotten much bigger. There's lot of little tweaks that add up. The guarding mechanic is such a great feature. The OST is not quite as much of a slam dunk as the first game, but it's still very good. There's a lot of new characters that actually contribute significantly to the plot of the game and aren't one-note additions that are there and then gone.

You should definitely play the first game too. However, Freedom Planet 2 is a fantastic sequel improving on most things from the first game. It's one of the best "Sonic" games we've ever gotten. Both games are recommendations from me to anyone who loves platformers.

This game is an improvement in every way to its predecessor. If you have liked the first game, chances are high you'll like this one even more. The gals got their play styles changed and improved and the flow of gameplay is undermined with beautiful pixelart goodness.
Overall it's super fun to play and listen to.
Only thing I'd truly criticise about it is the writing and story plot.

Freedom Planet 2 is a very lovely game. Just like the first game, the devs put a lot of heart and energy into it. I was shocked that this game was longer than I expected, but I never ran fatigue and I wanted to keep playing. My only sour points were few, like, I loved Merga, but I wish the other villains had a bit more development like Askal or Corazon. Some stages went for too long too like the water volcano maze one, but nothing bad that ruined my experience! I seriously would like to buy this game again for my Nintendo Switch to have it on the go! Great job Galaxy Trail, in art, gameplay, story, music and all! Thank you very much for creating the Freedom Planet series.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this game yet, so I wanted to bring my own opinions/experience to those that are curious and to the amazing developers! I played both the first game and this, and at times I will compare them (You do not need to play the 1st to understand this but it does help).

=====Review!=====
To me this game plays like a strange but fun mix of Sonic with the stages, and Mega Man with the bosses. I loved this game despite not really being much of a Sonic fan! It also does something I wish more games did: Give you a behind the scenes look at cut content and things. The Museum and cut content area was a really neat idea. Overall I'd give this game a solid 8.5/10 and a great game to just pick up and play as it's easy to jump in and out of.

Pros:
1) The graphics, animation and sound design has been improved over the first. Music (obviously) is based on personal taste. The characters look much better and have much more personality in their designs and voice acting.

2) The combat is improved and the dodge button is your friend or you can avoid using it for an even more classic game feel. You *can* make the game harder but mostly only in artificial ways such as less HP or take increased damage. Alternatively, you can make the game easier too if you really want with similar items or the Potions system. (I personally found the game to be on the easy side already)

3) The story is okay, and still improved over the first in my opinion but FP1 and FP2 have different approaches to their villain and their reasoning. So like most things it comes down to personal preference. I prefer the more complex villains like Merga over the more Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain's like Lord Brevon in FP1 (Nothing wrong with a simple story though, to each their own!)

4) The various characters are interesting and funny! FP2 has a wider cast of characters that help bring a lot of color and variety to the story. The best decision the developers made was to make sure the characters didn't feel like "one and done" (Mostly). You see them at various points in the story rather than just once or twice and even the ending includes them.

5) The controls feel responsive, as they should in a game about speed and fighting baddies! It can sometimes feel a bit clunky. Especially with the one giant robot level... but outside of that I personally find the controls to be well done.

Cons:
1) The Hub areas they added are a nice touch and there's even an unlockable VIP room and an arcade game. But for the most part outside of eye candy they lack any real interest or depth (They are very pretty though with a lot of cute NPCs to find!) Would be nice if there was more to do in them like maybe mini-games, activities, a decoratable home... something involving Lilac and her friends would be extra neat. I suggested volleyball in the forums but after the arcade update I think playing against Lilac's friends in arcade games would be really neat (and more fitting).

2) Some stages can get pretty lengthy or annoying. I did overall enjoy most stages but a few can feel dragged out a lot.

3) The game can be way too easy depending on your individual skill level. The artificial difficulty of using Brave Stones for effects (Take more damage, less HP, etc) does not make up for how simple many bosses can be as many feel like they lack variety/quantity of attacks. This is probably my only real complaint I have... it's far easier to make the game even easier than it is but making it artificially harder doesn't really add anything to it.

I wanted to add more but it was delving into responding to the community rather than leaving a review so I ended it here. Overall I liked FP1 but really liked FP2 a lot more and hope to see FP3 some day <3

An improvement over the original Freedom Planet in almost every way. The sprite artwork is absolutely breathtaking and the soundtrack is great too.

The levels for the most part aren't excessively long like they were in the first game, and do more to give the game its own identity instead of just being heavily inspired by Sonic by introducing unique gimmicks in some of them. Some of the level gimmicks made the levels they were introduced in more frustrating than they should have been, but for the most part they work at making each level feel fresh. The later levels also don't throw an excessive amount of enemies at you like the ones in the original did.

The gameplay also feels more refined than in the original. The trio from the first game are mostly unchanged, but feel better to play. Specific examples of gameplay improvements include Lilac being able to cancel out of her Dragon Boost, and Carol having a disk she can throw and jump to. The only character that didn't feel as good to play as is Neera, whose more combat-focused gameplay style made the platforming feel a bit cumbersome.

The Adventure Mode, however, was a step down from the one in the original. The story itself is noticeably less focused than the original's was, and the cutscenes are just as long. It also doesn't help that there aren't any character specific levels, which means the story plays out mostly the same for all four characters. The only difference between the characters are a few character specific scenes that add some extra context to certain parts of the story.

Despite its flaws, this is still a great sequel to a solid game.

Basically take my review of the first game and boost it 2x! this game is a MASSIVE improvement on the first in every way possible. which is saying a lot because i really enjoyed the first game a lot. Better voice acting, better story, better gameplay, etc. the core gameplay of course is the same, but each character has either been tweaked and had new abilities added and their overall gameplay refined. in millas case it's practically an overhaul that makes her honestly my favorite to play. it kinda sucked in the first game because shes my favorite character and her gameplay was kinda buns in the first compared to carol and lilac. but now it's insanely good and crisp. neera was also a good addition to the gameplay, really cool. I HEAVY recommend this. still play the first one tho if you haven't

TOO MANY LEVEL GIMMICKS, TOO MANY KEYS TO FETCH, TOO MANY ENEMIES WITH HOMING/DANAMAKU ATTACK PATTERNS.
The level where you have to gather 3 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid mcguffins ruined the game for me.
The "parry" mechanic works randomly but the game uses it as an excuses constantly throw too many enemies in your face, sometime preventing you from seeing where you are going.
The first 2 thirds of the game are absolutely great and once its starts constantly putting you in situations where you must evade enemy attacks, it becomes impossible to enjoy.

The first game already had similar issues towards the end, for Freedom Planet 3, could the devs just try to make cool levels that look good? It's more than enough for a Freedom Planet game to be great.

It's mind-blowing how much the devs have managed to expand the world, the story, it's stakes! Everything this game does is grander than the first: the world is so much bigger, the characters are way more intricate and deeply developed, the story is more epic and the stakes are higher for everybody, the worldbuilding is more detailed!!

But it still don't overshadow the first game. In fact, I would say that the first game's soundtrack is way more iconic than this one (the soundtrack is still awesome, fitting the gameplay flawlessly; just less memorable).

Si te gustaron los juegos de la época Genesis de SEGA este juego te va a dejar sin palabras, es como si SEGA nunca hubiera dejado de hacer juegos y consolas, conservando el amor junto con las físicas que hicieron del primer Sonic uno de los mejores juegos de los 90s.

La dificultad está balanceada así que no te asustes si vienes del primer juego, aquí no hay picos de dificultad tan altos, tenemos hasta el triple de niveles nuevos y se pueden escoger los ordenes y hasta rutas distintas según su dificultad por si quieres un desafío mayor.

Una de las mejoras son la personalización que tiene cada personaje en sus habilidades y equipamientos únicos lo que favorece a la rejugabilidad del título que van desde mejoras a las estadísticas de tu personaje hasta objetos de desafío para que la aventura se sienta un reto.

Lo mejor de este título es la historía sin duda es arriesgada a más no poder y muchísimo más oscura que la del primer juego, recomiendo que si es tu primera vez jugando comiences con el personaje de Lilac y luego pruebes los demás para disfrutar al máximo de esta experiencia.

Cómpralo, no te va a decepcionar.

Just awesome. Improves upon Freedom Planet 1 in almost every way. The controls are tighter and physics more fluid. The addition of items, potions, and the dodge ability makes this game a fair bit less punishing than its predecessor, but still quite the challenge esp. for completionists.It was consistently creative and engaging and never failed to put a smile on my face.

The story is a rollercoaster, it takes a while to build up but wow, it was captivating and heartbreaking and funny. First time I've cried over a video game. Get the secret ending, and avoid spoilers like the plague!

Все минусы первой части отлетают в космос! Сбалансированная сложность, игра даёт челлендж, боссы честные, и есть возможность подстроить игру под себя с помощью открываемых предметов и других опциональных упрощений. Все персонажи хороши и за каждого играть комфортно. Продолжительность игры стала больше. Больше упор на скоростное прохождение.
Крутейший пиксель арт! Визуал в первой части неплохой, но вторая на несколько голов выше! Новые дизайны персонажей чудесные!

A step up in production quality from the initial installment.
A fun pixel-graphic adventure with intense platforming action and bombastic character moments throughout.
The mechanics take a bit of learning if you're coming from the Sonic Genesis series games. The guard button in particularly sees heavy use with the amount of projectiles and speed of incoming obstacles that come at you. While tutorials are available, some mechanics might surprise you mid-game that don't have them.
Thoroughly enjoyed the initial adventure, voice acting and animated sprites do well to entertain. Enemy design is quite varied and engaging, if a bit overbearing for how frequent and fast you play through a level. Puts a smile on my face for the various references made.
(If you can brush aside any masculinity bias for your protagonists, I think it's a great game to play.)

The combat feels bad and the movement feels clunky. Imagine if you had to wait for your meter to charge up every time you wanted to spin dash in a Sonic game. Now imagine if Tails and Knuckles couldn't spin dash at all. That's kinda how this game feels to me. I really dislike the boss fights. It's a shame too because I was actually pretty excited to try this.

The art is great and the plot is there. I'm not here for the plot, but some people seem to like it. My issues aren't with the production value, they're with the core gameplay mechanics.

Y'know why Sonic is fun? Because it's simple and intuitive. You can run, jump, and spin dash. You attack by jumping. You go faster by pressing down and rolling into a ball. This game misunderstood the rule of KISS: Keep it simple, stupid. If they wanted to make a beat 'em up, they shouldn't have made a high-speed platformer. if they wanted to make a high-speed platformer, they shouldn't have added a bunch of clunky beat 'em up moves with no enemy feedback or hitstun, or a meter you have to wait for to charge every time you want to boost.

It's a game that's at odds with itself, which again, makes me sad, because whoever made this clearly gave a ♥♥♥♥ about what they were making, but it just isn't that fun to play. It's not awful, but they added too many ingredients and ruined the soup.

There's enough good here that I won't give it a "not recommended" but it's like a 6 outta 10 game and you shouldn't go in expecting "Sonic but better!", because it kind of missed what actually makes Sonic games fun.

It finally came out! After a tumultuous development cycle, Freedom Planet 2 truly delivered on all its promises, refining every aspect of Freedom Planet's rich, technical speed platforming formula while offering optional assistance (or added challenge) to players of any skill level. This is superior to the original in virtually every aspect, between the improved camera, controls and graphics, larger stage selection, superb musical score, and plethora of side objectives and mini-games. The only nitpick I can think of is that the foreground elements of later stages, particularly in the final ascent, become more plain compared to the early stages-- hardly worth worrying about considering how much teeth-pulling they went through to launch the darn thing.

If you enjoy games like Spark, Rocket Knight, Pizza Tower or Sonic, this is an obvious choice to pick up. I genuinely can't wait to see what GalaxyTrail works on next.

The gameplay remains rooted in high-speed traversal, but it gains remarkable depth through its cast of four playable characters: Lilac, Carol, Milla, and the newly playable Neera. Egyszerűen kiváló videojátékról beszélünk.
Mikor az elején játszunk vele, akkor azért lehetnek komoly problémák, mint pl.: rage quit, kontrollerelhajítási vágy létrejötte, illetv egyéb idegrendszeri leépülés. Ez leginkább azért van, mert az előző, 2014-es epizódhoz hasonlóan itt sem fokozatosan nehezedik a kihívások sorozata, hanem egyből a mélyvízbe dobnak bele, ami felettébb visszataszító lehet egyesek számára. Továbbá vannak olyan pályák, ahol körbe-körbe megyünk, kiutat nem találva.
Másik problémám az a grafika. Sajnálom, hogy a rajzolók ennyi időt öltek bele a díszletek részletezésére, de már annyira baromi jó a grafika helyenként, hogy az már eltereli a játékos figyelmét. Emiatt előfordulhat, hogy egyes pályaelemek annyira beolvadnak a környezetbe, hogy nem is vesszük észre őket.
Ezen kívül viszont szerintem egy fantasztikus alkotásról van szó, nem véletlenül készült 7 évig. Minél több időt ölünk bele ebbe, annál inkább megszokjuk, megtanuljuk a játék jellegzetességeit.

This is a game so good that I genuinely can't believe it's not full price. In a games landscape where games are phoned in and greedy all the time, it's nice having a game that's just fun, a really decent length, infinitely replayable, with great graphics and music. In every way a platformer can be good, freedom planet 2 excels. Freedom planet 1 was my favourite platformer before I played FP2 and now FP1 is so upstaged that it's hard to go back to. I know this all sounds hyperbolic but trust me, try the demo and you'll see just how great the game is.

That aside, the main reason this game is my favourite ever is just cause Milla is the most fun character in any platformer. She seems to be a slow projectile character on first glance, but once you learn how to use her projectiles to start rocket jumping around the stage it doesn't take long to realize the real fun in playing her. It's genuinely incredible that characters with movesets this diverse are all given space to breath across the stages. One problem I have with other high-speed platformers is that all the characters gain speed in the same ways. In sonic, everyone rolls and spindashes. In spark, everyone boosts. In freedom planet, lilac is spindashing, carol is walljumping and rolling to try explore the levels and find motorcycles to let her move even faster, Milla is rocketjumping, and Neera is a strange mix of managing a complex meter and constantly attacking to barrel through enemies. They all feel totally different and yet all their playstyles are fun as hell and the levels feel perfectly designed to accommodate each of them. (except for one kinda boring water level near the end of the game that's the only low point in an otherwise amazing set of stages)

Overall this is the best platformer ever made and it's a shame it's not brought up more when people are talking about legendary platformers.

（1）索尼克！！进来学学什么叫做流畅的高速跑图设计！！！

（2）这个游戏的菜单键有时候会频繁闪现闪退，虽然可以通过调用人物的信息界面来间接实现菜单键功能，但这个bug仍旧让人感到非常不爽。

（3）这个游戏在三个小时中期往后的地图元素差不多就是前期出现过的地图元素的排列组合，游玩起来本来就容易令人感到视觉疲惫，但是制作者不知道又怎么想的莫名开始在同一个地图里添加需要在不同死角解锁以推动游戏进程的机关结构来打断玩家三个小时前流畅的游戏感受，这无疑是对玩家整个游戏体验的沉重一击。

实话说高速运动类游戏就应该一直高速运动下去无论选择走哪条路线最好都不要轻易让玩家感受到死角的存在，但我想不通的是为什么这类游戏做到最后为什么往往都无法秉持游戏设计的初心反而转向解密与动作元素了呢，不明白。

我看这个游戏后期的流程视频也是，内容大都转向了精确平台跳跃与区域解密，这大概率属于是设计构思穷尽的缘故了，说句心里话，这实在是太可惜了。

It keeps the formula that makes this type of 2D platformer fun and improves many aspects from the prequel. I consider it the best "Sonic-like" game available and hope to see more of the franchise in the future.

[b]Art and Sound:[/b] The art is better, more detailed, and the soundtrack is also pretty good. There's room for improvement on some bosses' animations.

[b]Level Design:[/b] This is where the game shines. The levels are unique and fun, whether you want to rush through as fast as possible or explore every nook and cranny. The Battlesphere Challenges add some unique flavour to the mix.

[b]Gameplay:[/b] The controls are responsive enough, as they should be in this type of game, but there are a few minor issues, like sporadic clipping problems or situational input lag (very noticeable when controlling the BFF 3000). Even so, there's nothing that would make the game frustrating or unfair.

[b]Character Gameplay:[/b] The four playable characters each have a unique moveset and playstyle, different enough to justify a replay with each one. The stages are always the same, but each character can explore them differently. The plot also remains mostly the same, with a few extra scenes for every character.

[b]Story:[/b] Freedom Planet is quite plot-heavy for its genre, but I'm glad to see that they reduced the amount of exposition sequences. As for the plot itself, it's ok. There's plenty of world-building, but many key points are left to the player's interpretation.

[b]Difficulty:[/b] Some things are easier; you don't need pro-gamer skills to get S-Rank or beat par time on every stage. However, there's a noticeable difficulty increase in the second half and a VERY noticeable spike near the end. While the game offers greater challenges, you also have more tools (items and potions) to even things out. Everything is doable with some practice. Prepare to die a lot in the final boss(es), though.

My favorite 2d platformer of all time. Extremely fun movement, creative and adequately long levels, a fun combat that caught be by surprise, and gorgeous visuals throughout the entire game. Fun characters in a plot that is totally not inspired by Sonic Adventure 2 in the slightest nuh uh no way. Worst parts are the seemingly pointless item system, the multiple playable characters seeming to have differing routes just to end up all playing every level, and classic mode being locked behind completion of the story, which while not a complaint for me (I walked around and talked to every NPC like a crazy person) I can see being a detractor. If you like the blue rodent's 2d outings, I am extremely confident you will also like this game.

Freedom Planet 2 refina aquilo que já era muito bom em seu antecessor e nos traz algumas novidades bem interessantes. A mais notória delas é a inclusão de uma nova personagem ao grupo principal (Neera), apresentando um fator de replay que, se antes já era bom, agora se torna ainda mais evidente. Gostei do novo rumo artístico do jogo — ele enriquece a identidade visual da franquia, diferenciando-a bastante de Sonic. Só não curti alguns redesigns de personagens (em especial o da protagonista), mas, no mais, todos os cenários são muito belos.

Não tenho muito o que prolongar sem entrar no campo de spoilers, mas, quanto aos detalhes de gameplay, já aprofundei esse tópico na review do primeiro jogo.

Ainda prefiro o primeiro jogo; porém, para quem quer uma sequência sólida, é uma boa pedida.

As someone who only recently discovered and played through the original Sonic action-adventure 2D games - there is a kind of timelessness to them, a quality way beyond nostalgia. I did always like platformers - just slow on the uptake, I guess, just wait until I reach Metroid.

Sega's approach to storytelling was primarily via gameplay, and how Sonic contrasted with environment warped by Eggman's oppressive efforts. Their struggle was the foundation of the whole series, but the main reason it worked so well was the design of Sonic (blue, punk, sleek) and the feel of his movement (not unlike skating, in sync with level shape and with high capacity for styling), supporting his theme of freedom through every second of gameplay. I mean, this is why I love Sonic CD, actually I didn't like some of its progressively harder levels on my first try, but music and visuals, and the idea of Sonic really deciding the freedom of "little planet" made sure I would give it another try. This game very much has some of what hooked me in that game as well.

When it comes down to a follow up to Sonic Retro series, Sega couldn't quite replicate the simple beauty of them, it would seem. You can play Sonic 3&K, Sonic CD, 1 and 2, but then, well you know what happened. Even if Sega wanted to, the dev team wasn't the same anymore. Eventually, the modders of these games had collaborated with Sega, creating Sonic Mania... In 2015-17.

However, the game I'm reviewing is a sequel to Freedom Planet, 2014 (hmmm...), originally a Sonic mod that grew into its own game. Produced and developed by a different modder with a small team, it indeed was still a spiritual successor to the retro Sonic era. Classic mode removed story cutscenes, but the default mode had all the dialogue voiced. If you haven't heard about its main villain and how it's built up yet, you're missing out. The level of detail in every stage and act is astounishing, and in its variety it surpasses almost all retro Sonic games, maybe tied with 3&K. I'll come back to the gameplay, as now we'll finally review FP2.

[b]This game really puts Adventure in 2D action-adventure genre.[/b] In FP1, the cutscenes were done with the character sprites - what might've started out as cost saving measure, became an artistic feature- but FP2 makes the action gameplay and story even more holistic, through hub worlds and the connective world map. Again, where FP1's stages were extremely detailed, in here everything else is as well. Like in FP1, the enemies don't have contact damage - that's a plus IMO! Now it's usually only 1 boss per level, but they have HP bars! Some people dislike the longer, puzzle based levels (it's only two, and then a couple medium length ones), and I get that a departure from speed can be a tougher sell, but at least there's good variety between them. At this point it's hard to compare the game just to Sonic games, there's a lot of polish here that those games didn't have, for many reasons. Overall, character movesets were improved, they're more even in power now, but with differences still. About the score, many of the composers are fans of Sonic, Mega Man X and other classic platformer series' OSTs. If you loved Celeste's music (who didn't?), it has much of the same inspirations.

Now I'll move to [b]criticisms[/b], and I guess no need to excuse it, as it's obvious I like the game at this point.
It may be a strange first criticism when considering some reactions to the first game, but, I think the pacing, and perhaps the immersiveness of the game is occasionally worse, between cutscenes and the hub worlds, than when it was just cutscenes in FP1 - even if those were longer originally. The whole package could've been better integrated, as there's almost no difference between interactions with the world as different characters. Though this is less of a case when it comes to cutscenes, on replays you end up looking for the spots when they are similar, and I think it being less free would be worth it to keep more of our suspension of disbelief.

As far as solutions to that, I think this could've been remedied by having 2 types of adventure mode; the idea was actually inspired by a mod Map Character Change. The core storyline, with what you would consider most character-suited episodes and more canonical timeline, would feature switching POVs of different chars (with more limited hub world access per char too). If there's choice of who to play as, it won't be for the very important to story episodes/fights. The alternative, individual adventure mode is more like current one, one chosen character with fairly free-form access to world, but you don't need it to be story-focused, just give excuses to go through main plot and no exclusive world interactions. All in all, there's nothing wrong with taking away some of the approach of SA games or other titles, while not abandoning Sonic 3&K char-for-savefile way fully - just seems this game is pushing the scope that's reasonable for that format ATP.

I'll go over small gripes I have and seen regarding [b]movement[/b] of some characters.
There was something special about having the levels designed around Lilac's uncancellable Boost. It's not unlike old Sonic levels where you can curl in a ball at a right time and slide down and up for half a minute, it's just cool to let the level take control and trust it, especially when it isn't just handed to player but feels earned. It's also just so Lilac to be punished because of fearless rushing into danger. So yeah, kinda wish she had a different upgrade for sequel, but IG boost breaker is not a deal breaker, hehe. Carol is overall very fun and a lot easier than in FP1, with or without bike - but I found the Rebalance mod that tweaks movesets, and for Carol, it's hard not to compare it to vanilla. It allows to maintain momentum when jumping to disk, and speeds up rolling down slopes, as well as on bike. Those changes make it way more worth it to use Carol's unique moves. I'll have to play Milla a bit more to review her properly, but Neera's specials aren't impactful enough for the cost of full energy bar, and spamming attacks in focus is fun, but not all of the time. I'd prefer if she was very very strong in combat, if her platforming is weaker, atl.

I've read a lot of reviews for this game, and I can't say I fully disagree with some negatives regarding [b]the story[/b]. Like I wrote earlier about the limitations of singular POV playthroughs, that kinda leads to a wearoff which you end up getting replaying any story-based game, except here you do get points of interest and fresh moments still, but that doesn't entirely cancel it out. That is just a structure and presentation problem though, not that of the story as it is. I do want some more characters fleshed out, again I feel it's more pronounced cos we visit all these places as such different characters and experience it very similarly. I don't have the space in the review to give my other ideas, maybe in a comment later.

At the end of the day, someone has to give the credit to a game that's going for a vibe similar to Sonic, particularly to SatAM cartoons' vibes, but isn't tied by the strings that its inspiration has. As an indy title, it can have it's events proceeding, characters aging, showing emotions in any way that the author decides, can portray complicated topics, and I think very importantly, is true and authentic to the cultures it's inspired by. It does all that, and maybe it's not a flawless story, but you can just see how far we've come, even from the new outfits of the cast.

Retro Sonic games were not just those old mascots for children, because you indeed can get inspired by them, and channel through a childhood hobby your own story to tell, an escape for others, like Sonic games once gave you. Not perfect, but as Toby Fox said in UT 10th anniversary stream, pursuing perfection leads nowhere. This is a damn good game regardless.

This was as close as I got to playing a Sonic game. The only real issue I had with this game is that a hand full of the levels felt a little less polished and very maze-like where you are just backtracking everywhere to find the right lever or whatever. Beyond that the pixel art is fantastic, most boss fights are fun, soundtrack is great, if you don't care for the cutscenes you can always skip or watch them again after beating the game, collectibles and exploration in the levels, being able to choose between 4 characters with different playstyles through the main story. Overall a fun game.

Its graphics, presentation and balance are noticeably improved while still retaining the charm and can-do spirit of the first game (not in small part thanks to all-around entertaining voice acting). It feels less like a Sonic fangame this time around, but it's still strongly within the genre - which is definitely a plus! Unlike in the first game, there are no character-specific zones, but the characters - four of them now - still play differently enough with improved movesets (including invisibility frames) to make running through the game at least four times well worth it. The soundtrack is once again fantastic from start to finish, sounding both retro and fresh, uplifting and melodic. Bosses are better balanced and cutscenes don't take up so much time. There are also items now that you can bring with you; the system for selecting them was a bit poorly explained (especially regarding potions) when the game was released, but I've gotten used to it by now. Anyway, this is one of the best 2D platformers currently out there and a must for fans of the genre.

Did it live up to the expectations of its predecessor?
...not really. I played both games back to back in 2023, and in retrospect i'll have to say that on a technical level, Freedom Planet 2 is much more impressive. The combat's more refined, the graphics and spritework are beyond amazing...

But Freedom Planet 1 has so much more heart. In its story, level design, music, voice acting, and even its overall gameplay, for as much praise as i wanted to give the sequel that. So i'm gonna try to give my overall thoughts in the word limit.

[h1]GAMEPLAY AND LEVEL DESIGN[/h1]
As i said before, the combat is much more refined. So many tweaks that improve the overall gameplay flow from the first game, and make things feel more snappy. But then there comes the issue... The level design doesn't compliment the gameplay at all. Especially in its later stages where it just randomly throws waves of enemies at you in enclosed hallways for 'challenge'. Now, the first game was no stranger to waves of enemies either. But here there's almost no way around it. It borders on the point of insanity. The last few stages were barely even passable.

This game also features a gameplay loop where inbetween levels, you go into towns, talk to locals, and buy items to help you on your journey. Some which are helpful for the gameplay, and some which are functionally pointless. All these items you have to grind for by collecting as many gems in the stage as you can, and it's [b]INCREDIBLY[/b] slow. Why is there so much tedious slow grinding in a fast-paced 2D platformer? I went through the trouble of collecting all the vinyls, and the grind was an absolute nightmare. It makes Freedom Planet 1's optional gems achievement seem like a walk in the park. And in this game, those amount of gems are barely even worth a mere quarter.

As for the level design... i already mentioned that at the end of the game they lock you into a tight corridor with dozens of enemies, but more often than not, you face the opposite problem. Most of the stages in this game are too open and wide, to the point you could get easily lost, or accidentally backtrack to a place you already went before without even intending to. It's like they took 1 step forward in improving upon the first game, and then 2 steps back in all other design aspects. And don't even get me started on the random stealth section right at the end of the game, which no level ever used before.

On that note, every route is functionally the same, aside from some dialogue differences. Even the first game at least made every character route feel a little more distinct, to help make things not feel TOO repetitive... which they didn't do here. And despite only going for full completion on just one of the character's routes, and speeding through the other three as fast as possible, i still felt burnt out by the end.

[h1]MUSIC AND VOICE ACTING[/h1]
Quality-wise, the voice acting is technically better than the first game. But i can't help but feel like some voice lines just sound kind of... off. Which i feel like was barely an issue with the first game. Overall it seems like there was more passion put into it there than here.

As for the music... this one personally stings because i [i]adore[/i] the first game's soundtrack. To the point i even went on to buy it seperately, which i almost never do for video game soundtracks. It just has a nice vibe to it, filled with sweet ambient tunes and absolute bangers. As well as some beautiful emotional pieces of work worked into it. Here though... incredibly mediocre and bland.

And it's a shame because i thought the music that was made for the trailer was awesome. Why couldn't we have more of [i]that[/i] instead? Oh, fun fact... said trailer music is actually in the game, and it sticks out like a sore thumb due to the songs surrounding it.

[h1]GRAPHICS[/h1]
Probably my most positive point of the review. The spritework, animation and overall graphics are just incredible. In fact, it might feel a little TOO detailed at times to the point that things blend in with each other, but that's more of a level design problem.

One thing i don't really dig however is some of the character design changes. Most are just fine. Hell, i'd even say that Neera Li overall looks much better in this one. But then there's designs such as Spade and Lilac. Now, i love Lilac's new outfit, but she barely even resembles a dragon anymore. She's more like a purple human with horns. And Spade is just... bad. Also some of the boss designs are just really generic.

[h1]STORY AND CHARACTERS[/h1]
I'm just gonna come out and say it right now. I don't like the story. At all.

It feels like this game goes out of its way to take everything that made the first game's story and characters great, and turning it into a big fat joke. Especially the likes of Carol and Spade. And for the few things that this story DOES try to actually follow up on from the previous game, it leaves you with more questions than it answers. For example...

The game's about the history of the dragons... yet it barely even properly touches on the subject. Lilac is none the wiser from all that pointless running around to hunt for items and junk. Instead, most of the game's lore entries is wasted on [spoiler]learning that the main villain got it on with another dragon in the past and how said villain's now feeling bitter about that[/spoiler]. Not a bad story idea on its own, but... priorities. Set those.

Milla's true origins seems rather tacked on just as a punchline, and i don't understand why. It could've been so much better by giving it actual buildup.

The group's fallout is done very poorly here as well. For as short as the first game's fallout was, it did it miles better. And also Carol actually shows real regret for her actions. Unlike here, which just... makes her [i]less likeable overall,[/i] to put it as nicely as i possibly can.

Spade's entire plot involvement felt like it was written in one afternoon break. And then just like that, he peaces out, and is never seen in the game again. What even was the point of him?

The entire Serpentine teamup subplot was just stupid. Everything about it.

Also Merga's such a wasted villain. Before knowing what she's actually like, she exudates an aura of bitterness. Grief. Loss. Anger... It makes her look cold, and badass. Her design IS very badass. Her backstory is also really interesting on the surface, but... in the end, they decided to do [i]this[/i] with her? Ugh...

Speaking of which, all the villains get away with an easy slap on the wrist. Which feels... very unsatisfying. On that note, the [i]entire ending[/i] was completely unsatisfying. Nothing paid off. Nothing felt earned. Nothing felt like it made it worth it, and in the end it just makes me wish i could get my wasted time back.

And before anyone asks "but what about Classic Mode?", well... they locked that option until you already beat the game. There's no way around it anymore. They [i]want[/i] you to pay attention to their story this time, and it's just... bad. It's absolutely awful.

[h1]CONCLUSION[/h1]
I went back this year to replay the entirety of the first game, just for its story and vibes alone. And i loved it just as much as i did back then. The sequel... i haven't actually replayed since. And i don't think i ever want to.

EDIT 1: Oh, and i feel like i shouldn't even have to point this out in the first place, but apparently i do. If you enjoy this game... good. Actually, i kinda envy you for enjoying something i desperately tried to but just couldn't. But don't get mad at ME for not feeling the same about the game as you. It's just an opinion.

EDIT 2: Very mature. I tried to be nice about it and give credit where it's due, and some of you in this community still react like this. Thanks for proving my point. I won't stick around for Freedom Planet 3 if this is gonna be what the future of the series is heading to. Have fun with it though, i guess.

it's been too long since i played to get into specifics but the game is fun and has good accessibility. great successor to the first game

my biggest gripes with the game are:
- Lack of campaign variety between playable characters, meaning playthroughs with different characters feel extremely similar despite the vastly different movesets. This game would really have benefited from stages exclusive to certain characters (e.g. Pangu Lagoon, Aqua Tunnel and Trap Hideout from the first game)
- Completion generally feels extremely grindy. The museum is the worst offender, since filling it out is really just a matter of killing things over and over in a repetitive postgame, but having to play the game 4 times at minimum to see the full campaign makes this worse. Achievements also require a lot of stage replaying
- No-hits suck and feel like a stupid requirement. Bosses are OK, but stages do not at all feel like they're meant to be playable without taking a couple hits, especially considering how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spammy some of them can get
- The game's tone feels like a severe overcorrection from the first's, and most of the time like it's way too afraid to actually linger on any negative emotions for more than a minute or two at best. The Saturday morning cartoon vibe is charming at first but ultimately feels extremely unfitting, even moreso than the first game's serious tone. This would be more acceptable if the game didn't constantly try to undercut its own tone
- The "true ending" feels tacked on and is just generally really, really bad. Aside from the unlock criteria being obviously and blatantly tacked-on (maybe rushed? IDK), the actual content itself just sucks. It's Sonic.exe level of horror with horrible tonal whiplash and a terrible failure to actually meaningfully connect to the rest of the plot, let alone have any reasoning to happen with the unlock criteria gathered. It's completely abrupt, is pointlessly edgy to the point of feeling incredibly tryhardy, completely interrupts and overshadows an actually interesting and important character moment, and tries way, way, way too hard to be cool, scary, and generally be a Kirby final boss. Down to its core, the entire segment is shock value—the ending itself barely changes either, outside of some slightly adjusted ambiguity. It is generally considered not to be a good idea to treat a character as a joke for the entirety of your game's runtime, then suddenly make them the core focus and try to make them threatening and horrifying at the last minute without doing anything to earn that. The only weight this entire sequence has is completely and utterly dependent on the context of the first game; without it, it's just strange, confusing, and a complete detour from the game's established story

It breaks my heart to say this, but the levels feel like mazes—all of them. While I appreciate that this sequel has more combat options, movement abilities, and content, these elements aren't explored in an elegant way.

The core issue is a severe lack of synergy between the stages and most of the characters. This was a non-issue in the first Freedom Planet, where the levels, though large, were logically designed and worked well for the entire roster. In this sequel, the stages are genuinely hard to navigate, leading to players getting lost easily. The fantastic new mechanics get lost in the labyrinthine level design.

It's good. I *really* wish the story was better, they obviously care a lot about it but the plot and lore ended up feeling weirdly undercooked in a way I feel it just shouldn't have, like they were so close but it just doesn't quite work. Why is it like this???

A huge step-up from the original game. Many aspects of the original game have been widely improved here. The graphics have seen a sizable glow-up, with an influence on blending 2D sprite art with some 3D elements, akin to fifth generation console games. The game feels better to play than ever, the Guard ability really changes up how I played the game. You can certainly feel a greater sense of scope in the world and story, and unless I don't remember this happening in the first game, this one gives you plenty of reasons to play as each character apart from utilising their different playstyles (although as of this review, I have only played through the game as Lilac). The soundtrack is an absolute bop, one that I simply must listen back to at some point along with the first game's OST. Heavily recommended if you like Sonic games and/or really liked the first game. GalaxyTrail's craftmanship has certainly shined with this title.

💜 The first one was great, but this one is literally the embodiment of putting all efforts, with a first-class understanding of the genre and the players. Only a sequel, but already a competent development, both gameplay and narrative. The game is fast and responsive, and the balance is so good that frustration is almost out of the question. Useful mechanics, long playtime, replayability and of course amazing art, soundtrack and voice acting. The storytelling is given special time, as there are now hubs with NPCs for optional conversations. While the owners of the "blue hedgehog" don't know what to do, and rom hackers are ideologically stuck in the past, there is THIS game that is worth its money and more attention. An absolute banger.

Эта игра - пример хорошего сиквела.

В ней хорошо всё: и игровой процесс за разных персонажей, стиль игры которых отличается друг от друга, и запоминающийся саундтрек, который хорошо заходит и вне уровней (лично я добавил в свой плейлист большую часть музыки с уровней), и красивый пиксель-арт, шагнувший на несколько шагов со времён первой части, и интересный сюжет. В общем, хорош каждый аспект. Плюсом у игры есть функции, которые могут немного облегчить её прохождение (например - "Авто-щит"). Баги иногда встречались, но не критичные.

Однозначно советую к покупке и прохождению!

Freedom Planet 2 is an action platformer full of entertaining moments and fast action. It provides a lot of content for your purchase.

Lilac and co’s adventure goes many places in their vibrant and colourful world…. Ok i’m sorry my brain is just blanking at this, I don’t really know what to say when trying to put this into something that doesn’t feel dry to me.

The game is good, it has a lot to do and with 4 playable characters you are spoilt for choice when it comes to how you play the game, it does have the odd issue here and there like any game does but it is still an enjoyable game.

My only major gripe I have with the game is the camera, a lot of the time it felt to zoomed in for me. The game has the ability to change the camera's zoom on a dime (which is uses for areas in stages where you’re going very fast) so I'm sad to be unable to find any settings to let me zoom the camera out even a little bit.

It’s a fun game, it provides challenges at times which is great. I do recommend the game if you’re looking for a platformer to play.

Quando joguei Freedom Planet 2, a sensação foi imediata: isso aqui é tudo que o primeiro tentou ser — e mais. Já gostava do original, com sua pegada de Sonic da era 16-bits misturada a uma identidade própria, mas ele ainda carregava alguns tropeços em ritmo, balanceamento e até no storytelling. A sequência, por outro lado, parece ter aprendido com cada um desses erros e entregou um dos melhores jogos de plataforma 2D que já joguei nos últimos anos.

Logo de cara, a fluidez do gameplay me pegou. O controle dos personagens está muito mais refinado. Senti que cada movimento respondia com precisão, seja correndo, pulando, atacando ou ativando habilidades especiais. E falando em personagens, jogar com Lilac, Carol, Milla ou a nova personagem Neera dá experiências completamente diferentes. Não é só uma skin com power-up — cada uma tem um estilo próprio de combate e mobilidade que muda como você aborda cada fase.

Visualmente, o jogo está deslumbrante. A pixel art continua belíssima, mas agora com muito mais camadas de animação, efeitos de luz, cenários ricos em detalhes e uma direção de arte que salta aos olhos. Cada nível tem uma identidade única, e o design das fases é um show à parte: cheias de rotas alternativas, segredos e desafios bem colocados.

Mas o que realmente me surpreendeu foi o equilíbrio entre ação e narrativa. Freedom Planet 2 continua com seu foco em história, com cutscenes dubladas e bem produzidas, mas agora elas são mais enxutas e opcionais. Isso permite que quem quer focar só no gameplay possa ir direto ao ponto, e quem curte se aprofundar no universo do jogo (como eu) seja recompensado com personagens carismáticos, desenvolvimento emocional e um enredo que, embora simples, é cativante.

O combate também evoluiu bastante. Agora há um sistema de bloqueio e parry que adiciona uma camada estratégica nova, especialmente em chefes. Aliás, os chefes são espetaculares — criativos, desafiadores e com fases variadas, algo que faltava no primeiro jogo.

Por fim, o jogo é recheado de conteúdo: múltiplos modos de jogo, customizações, artefatos que modificam o gameplay, e muita rejogabilidade. A dificuldade é bem ajustada, com opções para quem busca só curtir a jornada ou quer um verdadeiro desafio de precisão e reflexo.

Resumindo: Freedom Planet 2 não é só uma sequência — é uma evolução. Pegou tudo que o original fez de bom, lapidou as arestas, e entregou um dos melhores exemplos modernos de como fazer um platformer 2D com alma retrô e coração próprio. Se você gosta do gênero, é obrigatório.
