Extremely simple premise, but the audiovisual presentation is very nice.

The game looks very unusual, gameplay is enjoyable, and the music suits just fine! The game is not very long, but some moments were a bit challenging for me (the ending of 'Elude' part in particular)... I wish they had some achievement awarded for finishing the game!.. :)

Oh, great, auto-scrolling timed-platform levels, but this time without jumping. What an amazing advancement from everyone's favourite part of 8-bit games. Great music, though.
Edit: Finished in 1.7 hours. The game becomes tedious because movement is around a central point, and just feels regularly annoying. The game's short run time includes an ending which (for thematic reasons to do with, uh, escape or something?) repeats the small number of gameplay ideas. I wish it had ended before that conclusion, as it added nothing to my enjoyment. The game would be improved if the devs took inspiration from bullet hell shooters, and reduced the hurtbox of the pink fleshy square which represents pink fleshy squares.
No clue why I had this game in my library, but randomly gave it a try. Was surprisingly chill and a decent experience overall. Short game, but rather relaxing and a nice soundtrack.

This was an amazing experience.
It looks like a simple game at first glance, but it's more than that: the levels can get pretty hard and enjoyable, but what really takes this a step further is the soundtrack.
Christopher Larkin really made some amazing, emotional, delicate, and rich music for this game.
Did I get emotional over a square and some circles? Yes.
Do I reccomend the game? Of course I do. It's so cheap, and if you divide the gameplay into more session it'll be more enjoyable in my opinion

On a quest to play things in my backlog, and if it doesn't hold me enough I stop.
The game is good and fine, for a flash game, which is essentially what it is. It has good music, and is not bad, but for $4.99 USD it feels overpriced.
Steam needs a dollar and 2 dollar bargain bin section for games, and this would be a jewel in that section, but in the 5$ section it is hard not to feel a bit disappointed.
So do I recommend the game? Yes, but wait for it to be on sale for a price you would consider reasonable for a 2 hour flash game.
Short, simple, yet with a lot of good challenge and well paced gameplay. Christopher Larkin once again works his magic with music, creating an intensely beautiful soundtrack that pairs wonderfully with the gameplay. If you aren't a fan of red blocks moving through gaps, this isn't the game for you, but it's most certainly worth checking out.
Very interesting game that makes you think differently and really readjust your mind.

This is perhaps the most beautiful and moving title I have ever played. Something you don't get from the trailer is that there are no loading screens. The whole game feels like one contiguous level. I don't know what magic they are using to make the world move the way it does.
Lovely little game. Very enjoyable and sometimes mindbending. Takes about 2 hours to beat.
Music by Chris Larkin is great. Same composer that did the music to Hollow Knight. The music changes dynamically based on the stage of the levels which is always lovely to see.
Checkpoints are plentiful except when they aren't. There are some levels that are pretty long, and the early phases of them don't pose any threat at all, so it's just annoying having to redo those parts over and over.
Controller is recommended. While keyboard is possible, it feels very unintuituve, though technically, it might be easier to beat some levels on keyboard. Basically, you move around in a circle and that's way more sense with a joystick.

This game sucks you in by feeling like Super Hexagon's much more chill brother. Then you get towards the end of whichever level you chose to do first and you realise that you were lured in the game is a lot more frantic than you first thought!!

Jeu très chill, avec de belles musiques, des décors minimalistes et une maniabilité très simple puisqu'il suffit de jouer avec le stick gauche de la manette afin de déplacer notre cube rose. Tout est très fluide, on enchaine les tableaux avec plaisir, on meurt un peu et on recommence immédiatement quelques secondes plus tôt, sans jamais s'énerver. La fin est peut-être un peu plus ardue sans être insurmontable, la ballade dure 1h30 sans forcer. Très cool à faire pour une soirée relaxe.
Very impressive. The main concept is quite simple: move a square around through a 2D labyrinth without getting squashed or hitting red objects. Yet, the implementation is surprisingly clever, such that levels are as much weirdly animated impressive works of art as they are intuitive enough to play through. The developers have been so far as to port the concept to the main menu, essentially working as a very original tutorial. Oh and the music is fantastic, evolving through the experience always coherently with what's happening on the screen.
Overall, the game is relatively short and on the easy side, compared to other games in the genre. Which is great because it absolutely never overstays its welcome. I played and finished it in one sitting and feel it's the optimal way to experience the game. At 5$, and having never seen something quite like it myself, this seems a strong yes from me!

It's fun! Not very long, but the gameplay is pretty fresh most of the time, although in some areas it can start to feel a bit repetitive. Slightly reminiscent of the flash game 'World's Hardest Game'. The adaptive music is gorgeous. Everything feels super smooth, and it is really cool to have the world physically respond to your movements.
Je ne sais pas comment j'ai eu ce jeu. Sans doute un bundle quelconque quelque part. Ce que je sais, c'est que je l'ai avec son OST. Et s'il y a peu de chance que je la réécoute hors jeu, je pense qu'elle est responsable à 80% de mon appréciation de celui-ci. J'ai adoré.
Vous incarnez un petit carré rose qui doit se déplacer, pas vraiment dans un labyrinthe comme les images pourraient le laisser penser, mais une suite de chemins parsemés d'obstacles, souvent mobiles, parfois mortels, enroulés autour du centre. Lorsque vous atteignez la fin d'une étape, le niveau se referme élégamment autour de vous avant de se rouvrir sur des chemins différents et de plus en plus corsés (sans jamais toutefois devenir trop difficiles, même si j'ai un peu galéré sur certains passages). Ce système rend le jeu franchement joli malgré son aspect minimaliste, et on comprend toujours tout de suite ce que l'on doit faire. Il y a parfois des timers sur certaines étapes, des murs qui vont lentement refermer le niveau sur vous si vous ne vous dépêchez pas.
Et bon sang, si le design élégant et minimaliste ne suffisait pas, la musique est incroyable. Souvent calme, parfois mélancolique, elle a à l'occasion réussi à rendre des phases pourtant pas particulièrement difficiles stressantes et épiques sans jamais se faire envahissante.
Le jeu n'est pas bien long, je l'ai donc fini en deux sessions, et si je n'y retournerai pas, j'ai beaucoup aimé cette expérience. 8/10

I love this game. It's pretty much perfect. The music is great. The levels are interesting and have a fairly gentle difficulty curve (I think - nothing was ever overly challenging). It's astounding how much variety gets packed into a not-overlong game with such a simple (beautiful) style.
And those level transitions/resets - just inspired.
I definitely appreciate this game as an aesthetic experience. If you like modernist art, for example, Russian futurism, Mondrian, constructivism, that kind of thing, you might like it too. The gameplay is rather rudimentary, just enough to sustain its short run time.

After having a terrible experience with 'Duet', I honestly thought that there's a possibility that I just don't like artsy games. But 'Expand' has proven that to be false. While 'Expand' is dead set on making sure that people who played this game to get the magical 'Game is an experience' feelings, it managed to have unique and competent mechanics within it by just having me move a square through a series of levels/puzzles that are designed with incredibly clever usage of shades, negative and positive spaces, as well as a single color(red).
Though I do wish that they use more than just the red color to design a more elaborate levels/puzzles in the game. While the highlight of 'Expand' are the brilliantly and uniquely designed levels/puzzles, I can't help but to think that some of them are not that well thought of. It felt like two different people are designing in their own way and they just mash it together. Nevertheless, still a great short puzzle game to play and finish in a few hours.
Also, kudos to the devs for not putting the Steam achievements in 'Expand'.

The rest of my jazz:
"You play as a square (or rectangle/quadrilateral...) in a circular puzzle maze? The colors are Red, Black, and white. Good music. Interesting..." were my thoughts when I first saw this game.
However I did not expect that I would enjoy it as much as I do. The game essentially greets you when you begin a new world and you begin the level "Follow me". I felt as though this was a personal introduction as the game respectfully and lovingly taught me the basics of the controls. Gently encouraging the urge to explore while not punishing mistakes made by the player. Whenever you are pinned between two black surfaces or touch a red surface it simply scrolls back the level to where you just started only a few moments ago. This is the same throughout the entire game.
Whenever I found myself struggling through a particular puzzle (or simply kept getting pinned) I would get frustrated. However the game doesn't encourage trying to go faster but it enforces the notion of thinking things through well and being mindful of your surroundings as well as your playing style. Often times when I was frustrated I would look at the mistake I made and try something different. Usually a new approach or simply slowing down would help me where I was struggling the most (there is no real way to just hammer through a level). I still feel a sense of accomplishment after getting through a level that still proves challenging
The music is Fantastic! And I feel it always fits the levels well and fits the emotional charge of the game perfectly.
I find the game easy to put down. I find one of my average play-throughs usually takes no more then 2 hours. It helps to distract me or calm me down if I find myself feeling anxious. The ending especially builds up its climax well and left me feeling ultimately accomplished and satisfied.
I see two downsides to this game.
- It has some moments that I think would impact a player sensitive to motion sickness (i.e. some spinning and visual level movement)
- The game does not feel as re-playable. There is no way to change difficulty and the world is the same upon a second playthrough. (though incredibly well crafted and I still find it to be marvelously intriguing).
Summary:
I really like this game. It's great visually and musically and I am still surprised by how much I enjoy it. For me it was worth the full price. If you play it I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do.

A very nice little indie game from south Australia! Nothing amazing, but not basic either: I believe it is quite artsy actually, and surprisingly well made! I also believe this game could be put as a video installation at an art gallery or museum, speed ran in such fashion that people walk in front and look at it for a while, like a living sculpture, a moving painting.
Because that is what Expand is about: yes, ultimately, it is an indie, conceptual puzzle/platformer, very short (4 hours are more than enough to finish it) and quickly forgotten- but while you will be doing it, you should definitely enjoy it if you have an eye and a weakness for aesthetics. This game is really pretty! not like a classical painting, but more like a mesmerizing, abstract piece of art. All the "levels" of this "platformer" are very well thought and smartly designed! The devs knew how to renew themselves on each tableau, and I appreciated that effort. Anybody who watches this game as a witness should also enjoy it, for sure! My wife and kids did.
Text is just a bit needlessly fancy/intellectual, and the music is alright but sometimes out of place (a bit too pretentious here too, maybe). But the puzzles in Expand look like traditional mazes you find in newspapers or magazines, also like a monochrome kaleidoscope, overall it is just neatly drawn and conceived. Nothing amazing as I said, so if you can buy Expand on sale, and you love little puzzle concepts like this one, you should most definitely enjoy it!
Short, but wonderful game! Watching the levels unfold and contract before your eyes is mesmerizing and never stopped to amaze me. You'll never got lost though: the minimal design ensures that it's always clear where to go or what to avoid. You will quickly find yourself dancing around the ever-changing labyrinth with ease, nodding to the beats of the excellent score. There are some challenging parts, but frequent, fairly placed checkpoints prevent any frustration. I enjoyed every minute!

Tombé complètement par hasard sur ce jeu, je le trouve incroyable par son concept. C'est hypnotisant, agréable à parcourir, pas si simple, très beau... Ca se finit en 1h30, à se garder dans un coin de sa bibliothèque pour le dévorer en une seule session.

Good game, better and more engaging than the pictures look. The main menu seems slow, but that is the pace of the game, and the menu is very integrated with the game mechanics. So the menu seemed weird at first, but great after beating the game.
Took less than 2 hours to play. Challenging, but not to much. 4 levels of different themes, and a final level that ties them all together. The soundtrack worked well with the levels, especially and the end of the last level. Really good soundtrack.

Spoilers, I guess? If you don't want to know anything about the mechanics since that's the entire game. I'll spoiler out the important parts. TLDR if you just want to sit down for a few hours and get your mind off anything it's great.
Despite the controller recommendation this was still really enjoyable on keyboard - in fact, possibly even more than it would have been on controller, but who knows since I seem to have lost it ever since I beat Celeste. When I began, I had absolutely no idea how the movement even worked, nor of how the levels were structured, and the whole thing was very disorienting. It didn't feel like I was "going anywhere" or progressing at all, it's hard to describe it besides just saying it was directionless. As time went on and I understood where I should be navigating myself to, that sense of direction and purpose began to be established. I unconsciously learned how to move around, albeit with constant slip ups. Just as everything became more clear, the goal of [spoiler] finding the four missing pieces [/spoiler] was revealed, and the game really started to take shape.
I soon figured out how the controls worked; they were [spoiler] "polar" - the arrow keys do not move you across an x/y axis, but rather through angle/distance from centre. Right/left moves you parallel to the circumference, up/down the radius. [/spoiler]. This of course felt extremely unintuitive at the beginning, but got a lot more comfortable with time. [spoiler] As other reviews have mentioned, a lot of the time a certain range of angles will be easiest to move in; for me, ~30° to 60°, since there it felt most similar to traditional x/y controls. As time goes on, you'll feel equally comfortable with navigating the rest of the circle, though even by the end I still somewhat preferred that range - probably because the game isn't particularly long and more practice would have changed that further. [/spoiler]. I felt that a lot of the game was really just becoming fully adapted to these new controls, and it knows exactly the pace at which it should teach you them.
This game is about two things: its atmosphere (especially the dynamic music, which is always difficult to get right but was done very well here), and "patience, not hesitation". For a game that (I think?) is supposed to be calming, I did find it quite frustrating at times, but it becomes less so when you remember the latter point. If those phrases have peaked your interest, grab it, it's not very long but rewarding if you're able to get into it. Definitely worth the price.

One of my all time favorite games. I come back and play it quite often actually. I just rebought it for Steam, that's why you only see 2 hours. This game is very spiritual for me. I just see the obstacles and the struggles in life just as these puzzles in the game. You will fail time and time, but eventually, you will learn and you will overcome.
This game is very simplistic using only the analog stick to play. You play as a pink square traversing a circle that continually warps and changes. The puzzles at first are a good challenge for a new comer, however you will get better and it will become quite easy after your first play through. Only using black, white and red (along with your pink square) this game gives you some amazing visuals that are just so damn aesthetically pleasing. I love all the shapes and designs moving in a mechanical motion as you try to traverse through it. Another absolutely fantastic thing about this game is the music. Go ahead, do yourself a favor and buy the OST. This music is done by none other then Christopher Larkin, the same guy that composed the music for Hollow Knight. This man is absolutely talented at what he does. I experience so many emotions while listening to this amazing sound track. One of the best OST's you can buy for yourself. The game will probably take you around 2 hours first play through, but as you get better (if you want to play it again) it takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Highly recommend this game. An amazing hidden gem for sure, at least for me. Buy this game.
Had this sitting in my library for years. Finally finished it off. It's an odd little beast. VERY minimal, but it set up a unique 'rotary' landscape then works it for everything it's worth. Control is a bit odd -- good enough but it has a few odd corner cases. It's split into four large themed sections, each with a boss-like climax. It feels like it should be working to some greater theme but it doesn't really.
Nice music though.

В роли прямоугольника, [spoiler]у которого все стороны равны[/spoiler], мы должны активировать 4 розовых переключателя, пройдя несколько серий перемещательных испытаний. Это даст нам что? Правильно, [strike]ничего[/strike] возможность закончить игру.
Подстерегать нас будут опасности в виде причудливых комбинаций из сжимающихся стенок, носящихся красных объектов-уничтожителей и невидимого таймера.
Шнырять по аренам мы будем под недурное музыкальное сопровождения, хотя темп игры пианино не всегда будет совпадать с резкостью нашей движухи.
И проходилась бы игра легко и непринужденно за час-полтора, если бы не 2 вертящих фактора.
Первый - игровой процесс построен на перекручивании квадрата, но:
а) визуально вы не распознаете, где у него низ, верх или боковая сторона - это все просто розовые линии;
определить положение в пространстве можно только сместившись относительно белого кружка-ориентира в центре экрана;
б) клавиши движения по сторонам - чертят дугу к навигационному кружку, клавиши движения вверх-вниз не меняют свои функции при смене положения относительно круга-ориентира. Иными словами:
- чтобы опуститься НИЖЕ, находясь под белым кругом, надо нажать клавишу ВВЕРХ,
- чтобы повернуть ВПРАВО, находясь под белым кругом, надо нажать клавишу движения ВЛЕВО.
Здесь нет никакого указателя движения (как в Super Hexagon), после череды метаний легко можно перепутать верх-низ и, как следствие, лево-право. Особенно "тошно и головокружительно" становится на последних уровнях серий.
Возможно, играть на джойстике легче, но я решил [strike]упороться[/strike] быть упорным и закончить всё вообще на клавиатуре.
Второй - игральная область круговой арены тоже смещается по кругу из-за постоянного прогресса и смертей. Это вдвое увеличивает уровень дискомфорта при продвижении по уровням. Хорошо хоть контрольные точки расставлены не очень далеко друг от друга (в большинстве случаев).
Обобщая и упрощая напечатанное, Expand - это короткая путеводно-музыкальная головоломка с проблемами в освоении и без какого-либо смыслового наполнения.
Хочется найти больше сочувствия к главному герою и меньше проблем с ориентированием на местности - Thomas Was Alone Вам в игротеку!

Vous dirigez tout en douceur un petit carré rose semblant presque flotter dans ce micro-univers circulaire qui ne cesse jamais de tourner, d’osciller, de s’étendre ou de se rétracter autour d’un axe central. C’est très apaisant, bienveillant (tout du moins au début) et la bande son invite au calme et à la sérénité. Ne cherchez pas à cliquer, sauter, attraper.. vous n’avez qu’à vous mouvoir rien de plus (mais rien de moins) et si le niveau de difficulté reste plus que raisonnable, mieux vaut quand même utiliser une manette.
Beaucoup de jolies trouvailles / surprises de gameplay apparaissent au fil de la progression et votre univers en noir et blanc voit rapidement naître le rouge, symbole universel du danger..
Quelles que soient les énigmes rencontrées et malgré l’apparente complexité de certaines, toutes se surmontent aisément avec une bonne analyse du « terrain » et une touche de finesse dans les mouvements. Dans [i]Expand[/i] vous ne bougez pas.. vous glissez ! C’est presqu’aussi bon que de laisser ses pieds s’enfoncer tout doucement dans le sable mouillé tandis que la mer se retire.. mais je m’égare..

I recommend this game to anyone who wants to play a very innoative arcade style game. Becuase this game is super innovative in its graphics, the world and how it presents its graphics. However, If you do not think this sounds interesting, then this is not a game for you.
The closest comparaison to this game is Super Hexagon. That game however is all about grinding, short bursts and get into a flow state with the nice music, while this game is more about playing levels.
Good things about this game:
* Graphics, slick
* Controls, remember to use a joystick to play.
* Innovation, the whole style is not like I've seen before
Bad things about this game
* Frustrating - The game isn't hard, but at times its frustrating. Comparing with Super hexagon, I felt I did bad when I failed. With this game I feel more that the game is messing with me.
* Checkpoints - Its sometimes hard to know where a checkpoint is, and it seems like the checkpoints not always are the same as save points if you quite playing.
* Slow - At times the tempo feels quite slow for a game which should be more about tempo.
* Options - You can only select options when you are at the main menu. Sure, its thematic, but still a bit annoying.
Another thing which I got really annoyed over is that when you start the game it say "Recommend Controller and Headphones". And altough I also recommend controller, I don't see any point with headphones. Sure the music is fine, but its nothing special and there are no sound puzzles or even important sound effects.

You want to play a game where you are a small purple cube stuck inside an invisible circle where all you do is just orbit inside it and dodge obstacles. You must be thinking: “That sounds boring” and, honestly, yeah, it does kind of sound boring. That’s what I thought at first.
[h1] You play as a dauntless… cube [/h1]
If I told my 10 year old self that in 20 years I would be playing a game where I am just a purple cube I would probably just be pointed and laughed at by my 10 year old self. First things first, get a pair of headphones and get yourself a controller. Neither are necessary but are highly recommended. The soundtrack in this game is fantastic and using an analog stick to move around will just feel more natural than using a keyboard because you will constantly be holding the stick in one direction and that can just feel weird with the keyboard.
Once, that’s taken care of, you will see a little white circle at the center of your screen. This is your prison. This round bastard is keeping the sharp main character locked up and the only way to get out is to play the evil circle’s sick game and win. Ok, maybe I made all that up. The game doesn’t really have a story and it doesn’t really need one. The game doesn’t even tell you what to do. The circle will expand itself and create a round level around itself and it’s your job to navigate till the end of it. After you do that, the circle will suck the entire level back into itself, except for where you are standing and create a new one. That’s the game and, honestly, it was a lot of fun.

The best way I can describe this game is… do you remember those old flash games that used to be a thing in the early 2000s. Well there was this one game called “The world’s hardest game”, actually I just googled it and it’s, apparently, still available to play. Expand is similar to that one. Also, another good example would be during battles in Undertale

when you are dodging attacks. You can’t do much more but move in all directions. You can’t speed up, jump or anything other than move. You will only be able to move within the circles orbit so forget about going to the corners of your screen.
The circle will start off really easy where all you have to do is move around but after about 15 mintues of playing you will also get to choose one of four levels. Each level focuses on one particular kind of obstacle. There are levels that expand as they follow your movement, there are levels that expand on their own and you have to follow along, there are levels with red shapes that send you back to the last checkpoint if you should touch them and there are timing based levels where you carefully have to time your movement before you proceed.

The game isn’t really hard at all but it’s just hard enough so you have to actually put just a little bit of effort to go through it. Even during the “harder levels” I never felt like I had to get too serious because failing a level isn’t very demotivating. The game gives you lots of checkpoints and each level only lasts for a couple of seconds before moving on the next one. I would say that the game is very relaxing but the kind of relaxing where you can sit down close you eyes but still be very much awake just in case something happens, a night-guard in a quiet village kind of relaxing.
[h1] Hypnotizing visuals and mystical music [/h1]
The game consists of only 4 colors: white, black, pink and red. The background is white, the walls are black, the bad (killer) walls are red and you (the cube) are pink. While just staring at a screen witch a circular level filled with various shapes doesn’t sound all that appealing, it really turns into something magical when you watch the levels disappear and new ones appear. I guess the levels also expand but they are still just levels. Anyway, watching those levels change before your eyes is mesmerizing … and a bit dizzy at times. Combine that with a lovely calming soundtrack that changes constantly according to the situation of each level and you’ve got quite an experience here.
[h1] Short, sweet and inexpensive [/h1]
I was able to finish this entire game in one sitting in just under 2 hours. I dreaded to see how much the game cost at its store page (as lately, I played games that lasted only a couple of hours but had an astronomical price) and there I saw it. 5 euros. The full price is perfect.

I’m still blown away by how simple it is, yet how much I enjoyed Expand. It’s not anything ground-breaking but it was lovely nonetheless. If you are in the mood for a relaxing game that you can finish in about 2 hours, you probably won’t regret getting Expand.

It's a good game that takes a simple idea and expands on it thoroughly. Its audio is entirely musical, but it's synched to the game's logic and events really well, doing a good job at replacing most every instance where you would expect a sound effect.
My only real criticism is that the circles and arcs look slightly polygonal rather than perfect circles, but it wasn't distracting after the first ~20m of play.
Two things stand out in this game and they are both well done-First of all I would like to say that the music in this game is amaizing and sooth the game well in most parts.Second is art style.I must admitt Im not objective here because I adore black and white games but never the less the game looks amazing.
Now I knew when I was buying this game that this isnt my fav genre so I cant complain much.It is at times very hard game but never unfair.

I hated playing this. Every level I completed, I hoped would be the last.
Of course Expand gets a hearty thumbs-up. It is stylish, simple in execution, and the music is excellent. I just suck at it! I'm waaaay too clutzy with a controller. To be fair, I feel the control is a bit clunky. My square feels slow and clumsy and I was constantly fetching up on the walls and corners.
I have to disagree with the other reviewers calling this "chill," "meditative" and "relaxing." Expand requires significant controller finesse, with some levels on a timer (stressful!). Of course I generally play games after having a few beers. Maybe that has something to do with my complaints. Then again, wasn't Expand made by Australians?? They should anticipate some degree of inebriation among their audience! :D
The world needs more games like this. Super relaxing little puzzler that anyone can pick up and play. You literally have to move just one joystick the entire game. That's not to say this game is super easy, but don't expect a serious challenge. Despite having such a simple concept, the journey was kept fresh throughout my 2.5hr play through. The soundtrack is enchanting, it superbly matches the game's vibe. Farewell my little pink companion, that was a blast.

I spent most of my time with Expand having a bad time. The movement feels clunky, and there are plenty of places where the corner of your square catches an edge and it's just frustrating. The mechanics are overused and don't really introduce anything more than moving in different ways, which makes the 90 minutes of time I spent playing drag on. Some of the longer times between checkpoints can be upwards of a minute, where if you make a tiny mistake you have to sit through another mindless series of corridors only this time from a different angle just to make things just a little bit more annoying. The music sounds cliched and tries to be overly dramatic and epic, which doesn't really bring excitement or intrigue to a square walking in 4 directions. After reading another review I saw this was from the same composer as Hollow Knight, which had an excellent soundtrack, so I'm surprised the ball was dropped so hard here in terms of atmosphere. There's about half an hour of fun that could be salvaged from this game if it had some of its core gameplay [b] Expanded [/b] upon
Fantastic little Indie game. I can't even imagine how long this took to make; while it looks very slick and easy, this has got to be one of the most technical Indie games I've seen in a while.

For what I have seen, it is a very well made game.

I never known that expand and Moirai had a link, and it made me quite sad to here that Moirai had to be taken down.
I didn't knew what I was going in when starting out Moirai, but when I realised how beautiful simple it was, I have been very impressed.
This was a great experience. It is bad that everybody loses something great because of trolls.

An example of Metroidvania condensed to it's purest form. A Modernist game best appreciated with head phones and a controller. Elegant, Hypnotic, and frustrating. Appealing to a limited group of artists and gamers who appreciate a simple and refined experience. Try it if you find joy in modernist art; orchestral music; or the Atari game system.
Expand is an interesting musical puzzle/platformer (although I don’t think those are the correct genres). The music is superb and the way the game flows is fantastic. The difficulty is almost perfect, and it was a very enjoyable 3 hours. Granted, I was a little high during it, which may have elevated my feelings for it, but looking back I would still very much enjoy it even without the stuff.

It's not bad. But it's not great either. It's quite a simple game.
Move the dot on the screen to navigate moving obstacles, but there's not a lot else besides recognizing the obstacle movement patterns.
A true hidden gem.
The soundtrack is very emotional, and I love the transitions between the levels !
And while the gameplay at the beginning can be a little repetitive, you can have some interesting and challenging levels after that !
Wonderful little game if you want something a bit different. Expand is very basic in concept, but it sells itself with its presentation and music. All you have to do is use the left analog stick to steer a red square around a maze, but what a maze! The entire thing is like a living entity, morphing, mutating, spreading, contracting, it's quite a hypnotic thing to watch. Essentially you're presented with a bite-sized navigational problem, and once you solve it the maze evolves into the next one, leading you onwards through its stages. While you're doing this, ambient music plays, tracks becoming more urgent as the action does, and slowing down again as the action does. The music really fits each level, almost urging you forwards through the harder sections, and towards the end it all builds up to a crescendo that'll have you (well it had me) on the edge of the seat.
The only downside is that while it starts off extremely slow, like a lethargic Super Hexagon, about halfway through it really starts to throw some difficult challenges your way. Every time you fail (eg. get squashed, or hit a red wall) the maze rewinds a few seconds so you don't lose much progress, but for a "relaxing" game there are a handful of "you've got to be kidding me" stages... but then the moment passes because you succeed, and move on.
Anyway, cheap, cheerful, different, occasionally frustrating, and worth a shot.
Expand is, at best description, a light puzzle/platformer with a cool concept with attractive visuals that winds up falling short and disappointing due to a couple of very noticeable and immersion-breaking flaws. Overall the game does some things very well, such as...
-The soundtrack is relaxing and imaginative. I loved listening to it throughout much of the game. The music often supplements the action on screen in a meaningful way.
-The visuals are very pleasing; the game's levels are created and drawn as well as erased and removed in a very artistic way that either sets the scene, closes the chapter, or affects the game play in unique ways. I liked how this functioned.
-A lot of levels flow very nicely; the minimalistic approach works very well with the art style, and the game play matches this aesthetic regularly
Unfortunately, the list ends here for me. The game makes a few cardinal sins of gaming that create a frustrating and repetitive experience far too often, especially for a game that is meant to be played in a relaxed state.
-The game's controls are moderately floaty; this wouldn't be a problem normally for this kind of game, but there are more than a few levels that require precise navigation or movement. Failure to succeed can create a very frustrating experience, as some of the levels are quite tough.
-Difficulty is not a problem in a lot of games, but it winds up being a huge detraction in the game; the difficulty spikes without warning and without reward. In other games, there is a sense of accomplishment that goes with beating something tough; in the game, you are simply glad the pointlessly hard part is over.
-Cheap mechanics are used to cause player failure, creating a deceitful level of difficulty. The game is sometimes far too difficult for the style of game it is meant to be, and only because level design waxes and wanes between pretty smart and pretty dumb far too often.
-The checkpoint system is quite stupid. Again, it is unpredictable. Sometimes the checkpoint will take you to a logical place, and other times you are required to replay a section you have beaten dozens of times. Similarly, there are some sections of the game that require no skill whatsoever that separate high-skill areas. These too must be replayed in some levels when failure occurs. WHY? IF that is the case, then the level/checkpoint design is bad.
Overall the game is more frustrating than rewarding. A cool concept is introduced, but is left being inconsequential due to the many design flaws that exist.

A decent game with some neat visuals and decent level design. There are some challenging bits that nearly fall towards frustrating but generous checkpoints prevent it from being so. The end becomes very meditative but part of me wishes there were more times in the middle of the game with that effect. I'd recommend it on a sale.
A relatively simply game, it can be played entirely in about 2 hours depending on one's skill level. The levels aren't overly difficult, but they aren't mindless either. The cost of failure is usually being set back about 10-30 seconds and having to redo a segment of "platforming". However, you cannot usually brute force through a level. Some are straightforward and simply a measure of how well you can navigate the obstacles, but several require a moment of study and learning the flow of how things move.
The soundtrack was very well done and always matched the situation well. In slower levels the music is calm and comforting, but when things start to get serious it will pick up until it finally crescendos at the end of the game, leaving you with a sense of confident accomplishment.
There were several times that I got stuck and had to make multiple attempts at the same course, being set back to the beginning each time. However, I never got truly frustrated. Something about the game makes you just take a breath, look for a second, and try again.
Overall a solid game and a good way to just chill and watch a pink square slide around.
Exceptionally good - looks and sounds great, challenging but not frustrating, doesn't overstay its welcome.
Good relaxing game.

Good game with great soundtracks. It is kinda similiar to "140" but this game has a more chill style with symphonic music. When I bought this game, I was expecting a atmospheric puzzle game but it is more like atmospheric platformer. If I wouldn't hate time pressure and running away from things, this game would be perfect for me. By the way the game has no story, only chapter names.
A minimalist hypnotic labyrinth game, short enough to play in a single sitting, but also autosaves so you can always pause and come back later. Not too difficult, some intense sections, but for the most part the game has ample checkpoints.
The music is perfect and makes it completely awesome.
It's a good game. It's an artsy game. I wasn't in love with it.
