A very well-written murder mystery game with some fantasy elements. I was hooked reading this visual novel and pulled out my notebook to write down all the names and guess who the murderer is. You play as detective Ricky Fox, who vowed to uncover the mystery of his best friend's death, Dr. Aurther. He drove to Greenhearth village, where his friend was working as a psychiatric doctor, who mysteriously died and was labeled as a suicide. Upon arriving there, you'll start questioning people and decide who to trust and share the information you discover with, and who to avoid or try to frame as the culprit.

The gameplay is simple; there is nothing much other than reading and choosing from a list of questions or changing the scene to another character to question. I'm sure the way you respond to and share information with those characters has a significant impact on how the game ends.

I liked the artwork. You can see the world from your character's point of view. The more he 'discovers', the more the characters and the world change around him. This was a beautiful addition to the game. It is not all black and white. However, while there are some soundtracks in the game, some scenes are very quiet; you can only hear sound effects but no music. I wish the soundtracks were played throughout the game.

The game has so many characters that I had to write them down to remember who is who and what their relationships are. I wish there were a section to view characters; otherwise, the game has one of the twisted stories. I didn't expect the ending I got at all. This calls for another playthrough. Recommended to all VN lovers.

J’aurais aimé nuancer mon évaluation, parce que je n’ai pas détesté ce jeu, mais j’avoue que j’ai quand même été un peu déçue. J’ai trouvé que l’écriture n’était pas très bonne. Elle manquait un peu de naturel, notamment dans un jeu exclusivement basé sur des dialogues. L’écriture des personnages m’a aussi semblée assez superficielle, au point où certaines personnalités finissent par changer du tout au tout dans le jeu (par exemple le gérant de l’hôtel qui ne raisonne et ne s’exprime plus du tout de la même manière à la fin du jeu).
J’aurais aimé que mes choix aient plus d’impact dans le jeu. J’ai eu l’impression que peu importe ce que je choisissais, la fin resterait inexorablement la même. Je me suis sentie assez impuissante, plutôt frustrée.
Néanmoins, le point fort de ce jeu, et ce qui m’a tout de suite accrochée, réside dans son atmosphère. Avec ses jolis crayonnés, son ambiance en noir et blanc et les mystères que recèlent l’intrigue, on se croirait dans un « détective noir » ou dans un roman lovecraftien. C’est accrocheur, intriguant et c’est sans doute ce qui m’a poussée à terminer le jeu.
En fait, Echoes est plutôt à prendre comme un roman visuel un peu interactif, mais globalement une histoire qui nous porte dans une direction précise. Il faut se laisser attraper et profiter de l’expérience sans chercher à contrôler quoi que ce soit. Il a ses défauts, certes, mais est plutôt prometteur et je serai curieuse d’essayer d’autres titres de ce studio !
