Beautiful and atmospheric short Point & Click Adventure!
just play rusty lake
I understand that this was made by one person (which is impressive), however there are still quite a few issues with the game, including some glitches and just a general lack of direction. It feels like the creator released and then abandoned this game, as it was released in 2018 and there are still many issues. It had the potential to be great, but I (a completionist) struggled to finish even one ending. The music was the best part of the game.
Let's see, the case seems very interesting with the little I've seen and the puzzles are not bad but when playing it with the steamdeck the sensitivity with the joystick is too high and if I use the touch screen the character does not stop moving and I can't correctly identify the items with which to interact. I'm going to refund it even though the game is interesting and dark.
The game is good. But I ran into a bug. After looking it up, others seem to have the same issue and it blocked me from the good ending.
Bought it years ago, but did not play earlier since i'm used to games with Steam achievements. But gave it a try not so long time ago, really enjoyed it! I got every ending, game is not long so it was not tiresome but it's not too easy either. Interesting plot, loved chilling soundtrack and *distressing* atmosphere. If Earthworms will get Steam achievements, definitely will reinstall it and play again.
Yes.
Earthworms is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. It's a point and click adventure with a surrealist kind of plot that has you take on the role of a dectective who can see glimpses of the future. Explore and island searching for a girl and click around the place a lot... look, this isn't Monkey Island, and it's a somewhat old and dead genre.
On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers.
The artwork here is terrible, it's all just amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers.
The poor quality art is matched with pretty poor quality animations... ultimately this looks quite poor and amateurish.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 9 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Earthworms has the farcical price of around $6 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
For comparison, the $6 asking price for this game could get you games like "Left 4 Dead 2", "Battlefield V" or "X-Com 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
The nicest thing to say about this game is that it has a really distinct, beautifully rendered art style, and an interesting world.
The least nice thing to say is that it is buggy, confusing, poorly translated, not that well programmed and not that fun to play because of that.
It really feels like the artist went all-out whilst the programmer/game designer held themselves back and left much unpolished.
I think I missed a few things because I made some choices that couldn't be undone, including a single click that sent me to an ending and ended that playthrough. I never made a save because it's a short game, and so that meant once I was done, it was either start over or call it a day.
Welp. I called it.
Kind of boring to me.
Whimsical worm game. Hand painted and beautiful, nice creepy soundtrack.

Good game so far, although if and when I ever complete it I doubt I'll ever play it again.
I bought this cause I love adventure games and thought this had a unique visual style, but the english translation is pretty bad. It seems like it wants to be a detective noir style, but the writing is just bad english grammar and doesn't really sell me on immersion. I'm constantly looking at things and rather than being immersed in the world I'm complaining about how things don't grammatically make sense, which spoils any enjoyment I might have gotten from the cool visual aesthetic.
No!
Excellent, weird, intriguing, fascinating, well made game. Done all three endings. Looking forward for more of this developer!
I promised myself I would write a review for every game I finished this year, but what is there to say about this strange Point & Click game? It's pretty straight forward, and by that I mean its completely bizarre in a good way. There are definitely some things lost in translation (Polish to English), but it never gets in the way of progressing. I think the most enjoyable part is the art style and the music, but other than that you're just going through the motions, you know, pointing and even clicking your way through the scenes. For the price, it's pretty hard to complain. I think if you're looking for a weird, easy going experience, this game is worth playing through on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

This game has a very interesting story, but at the same time is very weird and mysterious. Perfect for fans of ponit&click/story games
I wanted to like this game, but just too many glitches. Inventory discrepancies, loops where you walk towards an area and instead go back to a previous one ... with the things you already completed back where they were (that Gal you teleport home), and now after re-starting it to "clear" the errors ... I can't save any more. I liked the ambiance, humor, and style ... but the bugs just make it not worth continuing. I did buy the Soundtrack though, because I like that. Sad, but just too annoying to keep playing,
Quirky
Buggy gameplay. Straightforward or brute force puzzles. In a thematic department the game is a complete mess with postmodern irony and sarcasm at the front. Also the neutral ending spits in the face with its sudden, unsattisfacting closure. The game itsfelf had pottential to be a dream-liky, surreal, delirious narrative experience, but the actual substance quickly moves away from that direction.
I know how hard it is to make a game and how easy to dislike anything just like that.
It's a great achievement for the person who made this game (Wojciech Witowski), but the save system doesn't work and I just didn't like the vibe, the progression and the music of the game in general...
Very glitchy, game play wasn't terrible but the glitched made me stop playing halfway through. Not worth the money.
BEWARE: There's a bug that causes the Save feature to temporarily disappear every time you click: Esc -> anything other than Save -> Esc
So I didn't know that I could save my game, and 5 hours later, I got a "neutral" ending without any kind of warning. If I had known that doing "the thing" would end the game, I wouldn't have done it. There's no way I'm doing all of that all over again!
Apart from that annoyance, Earthworms is decent, but nothing special. The visuals and soundtrack are the strengths of this game. They're great and they make for a somewhat atmospheric little game. The puzzles are mostly easy, but a few of them are a little challenging, at least. I found the writing/narrative to be pretty bad, and I don't just mean the poor English. I just think it tried too hard to be mysterious and clever and instead came off as pretentious and nonsensical at times. I also found the attempts at humor dull and out of place. The inventory and UI are a little bit clunky and annoying.
Interesting.
Decent point and click adventure. Weird storyline that mixes mystery, magic, sci-fi and general weirdness. It's only about three hours long so make sure you only pay whatever you think that's worth.
Ciekawa gierka z łamigłówkami i nietypową atmosferą.
Creepy, funny, relaxing point-and-click game with a really good soundtrack to boot. I paid $0.50 for this, was it worth it? Absolutely. If you appreciate original art in video games, buy this now.
He dicho (?
One of the most interesting games I ever played one steam. Puzzles are sometimes straight up impossible to solve but most of the time they are suprisingly captivading, Story is pretty original and insteresting but translation makes it kinda hard to understand, especially later parts of the game melted my mind with all the sudden twists and oddly worded texts that doesn't even properly explains half of the things going on. I can't really explain but mc is also pretty weird, my english isn't good enough to break it down properly, so ı'm just gonna say that he is unpredictible. But overall, I really liked it. Earthworms' gameplay isn't perfect and the translation doesn't always do the job, but story-wise it has many interesting and original ideas. Artstyle is also quiet nice.
Very Nice!
I hate to see beautiful work of graphic artists go to waste because of poor game flow and very unintuitive logic at times. A rat won't get caught in a trap until you specifically tell a person with rat problem that you're working on it. Even if you used that chat option before, you have to repeat it after setting up the trap or the rat just won't enter it.
I had other problems with this game but the rat thing forced me to ragequit. Maybe I'll give it another go in the future, devs really nailed creating a mysterious atmosphere
An OK short point & click detective story.
I like the artwork and the game has a lot of potential.
Some connections/puzzles aren't too straightforward or make that much sense. And the vision hints are more confusing then helpful.
I didn't find the characters all that interesting, nor does the main character have enough depth to form any strong opinions on either way. Apart from perhaps a mild tone of sexism, in what seemed to be an attempt at recreating a stereotypical noir detective attitude. But perhaps some things were mixed in translations.
Both good and bad endings were ok. Things were tied up and story explained I guess.
The good ending is easily missed if you don't backtrack after speaking to the bard. Talk to the granny again before entering the hut
I had hoped replaying and getting the different ending would bring the whole thing more life, but no. It was all just, OK.
If you are looking for a short point & click game to waste away a couple of hours, this is perfect. Bit of something of nothing.
Best thing of the whole game, the artwork, which I quite liked.
Earthworms is a strange, but kind of interesting point-and-click adventure game, all right what is the story. Detective Daniel White a detective with strange powers is tasked with finding a missing girl but the case soon turns to the strange, as he find strange worm-like creatures on the little island where the girl disappeared from. Now if Daniel fails this case, it could mean more than just a missing girl.
So then what are the likes, well the hand-drawn art style is very good, like some parts of the game could actually work as a painting. The story is good but can be very confusing it has a sort of Twin Peaks kind of vibe to it, as you meet a strange cast of characters, and listen to their strange dialogue even the main character is odd.
The music in the game was good, nice to listen to and it helped with the game’s strangeness. The atmosphere in the game is okay not scary, but it is disturbing in a lot of sections. The puzzles in the game were okay and some where easy to figure out others were kind of confusing and a lot of times I had to use a walkthrough. Lastly the price for the game is pretty good.
So then what are the dislikes, well the puzzles as I said are okay but some of them can be quite difficult to figure out, also there are no achievements to get in this game, felt like some achievements would have give the more incentive to replay the game. As I have said Daniel has some sort of psychic power and it can help to figure out what to do next, but it's often not really utilize that well, as well as being a little vague.
All right then Earthworms is a strange, but kind of interesting point-and-click adventure game, it has a good hand-drawn art style, good but can be very confusing story and an okay atmosphere, while not scary but it's disturbing. I say get this game it's not really that bad an okay spooky game.
Decent point and click puzzle game. I appreciate that not every item you can pick up is used and as you progress through the game items in your inventory that aren't used in the next phase are cleared out of your inventory. I appreciate the illustrations and puzzles throughout the game as well as the slightly disturbing aspects.
All in all, definitely worth picking up especially on sale.
Bardzo fajny klimat. Polecam!
Earthworms was a very interesting experience for me. I have played through it twice now, once getting the negative ending, and a year later, playing again to get the positive ending. There are a few issues I had with the game and they are as follows:
1. The controls are a bit difficult. It's a point and click game and it isn't tile based, which isn't a problem. But the problem comes from the odd camera movements and how exploration of the world works. Many of the smaller buildings do not exist as their own maps with boundaries, but rather little pop-up elements on the overworld. The game will also zoom in in certain locations and it can be hard to know which way to go to get it to zoom out again.
2. The game was originally in Polish, which is also not a problem, but the translation is not the best in the world. Some of the grammar and spelling is weird, as well as word choice. Not the biggest issue, but it does make some of the dialogue sound unnatural.
3. There is very little guidance that the game gives you, and there is no hint system, which some may enjoy, but I found it difficult to do some of the fetch quests and little tricks, and needed to check a walkthrough every once in a while.
4. Because there is so little guidance, a lot of the items you pick up between chapters (which are all unmarked by the way) end up going completely unused, and since a lot of the items will disappear between chapters, I found myself entering new rooms just to discover that half of my items were gone.
Despite this, I still recommend the game. It sets up a very nice atmosphere and is perfect if you are a fan of sci-fi dreariness or weirdcore aesthetics. Both the art and the music were very nicely done and compliment each other very well, and the art of the gore is done just enough to be creepy without ending up disgusting and hard to look at. The flaws that the game does have are not game-breaking, even if they make things difficult from time to time.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this game.
There are a couple of positives though, so let's start there before diving into the negatives.
Pros
- Weird, mysterious, goryesque atmosphere and events which I enjoy
- Art style, which was quite fitting to the tone of the game
Cons
- Off-putting English translations (quite distracting)
- Typos on top of that
- Simplistic dialog/writing and characters
- Generally weak puzzles and sometimes fairly nonsensical resolutions
- Technical issues (notes disappear, props reappearing, names of props staying after being picked up to name a few). Nothing game-breaking though.
- Frustrating inventory management (Inventory closes after trying one object intreaction, no shortcuts to opening inventory, close ups of objects stay on screen after closing the inventory which requires opening up the inventory again and closing the close up)
- Additional personal gripe: the font and cursor do not fit the theme of the game
FYI: There are 3 different endings (positive, neutral and negative). I personally didn't bother playing through the 2 I didn't reach although I did look them up online.
Such a quirky, offbeat and surreal point & click adventure game. There's not much to say since the game is relatively short but the visuals are topnotch and as unique as the story itself so anyone that likes the genre or interested in giving a classic style adventure game a go well... you certainly can do much worse.
Just be careful and don't trip over all the wormtacles.

Oh almost forgot to add the music is top notch and fits the game's theme perfectly.

Very close giving it negative review but overall I feel it does deserve good more. As usual with a few games it's not obvious for reaching good ending. I managed only with neutral and negative endings. So I were not rewarded for making it far to end.
Man sollte hier also keinen Shakespear samt komplexer Charakterstudien erwarten.
Such a weird game - I liked it a lot :)
You should be open to weird, story driven puzzle games if you wanna play this.
And in case you have doubt: The amazing soundtrack alone is worth a buy!
Nice game with a great story and soundtrack. I especially liked the track playing in the base (after opening TP-01 door). Multiple endings too. Be warned if something feels like a dead end, you may be missing a key item. A couple times, there's additional dialog if its in your inventory. Really liked this game! Nice job devs!
This game is weird.
Essentially it's like one of those old point and click adventures. But pretty soon into the game I already got lost due to some cryptic puzzles and a lack of hints.
Would still recommend, if you are good at solving not so logical puzzles.
like it. a thumb up from dale cooper.
Somehow, I couldn't get its vibe, despite being a fan of Donnie Darko, Twin Peaks and similar settings. I admit the atmosphere is peculiar, but I found it averall boring, disconnected, with either too easy or too repetitive puzzles. Cherry on top, when I was at about the end, a bug prevented me from proceeding. The "red card" door's pop up wouldn't close, I had to leave the game and "save" option wasn't even present in the menu at that point. I lost the last two hours of progress, and I decided to uninstall it before reaching the end. I'll watch a video to see where it goes, but anyway I wasn't that curious as the story didn't really grab my attention or feelings. The inventory interface is one of the most annoying ever found in a point and click, with the bag in the lower right corner, the contents in the top left corner and the interface that keeps closing if I use an incorrect item, so I have to go back to the bag to open it again, sometimes for several times until finding the right item. Towards the end of the game there were quite a few graphical bugs. It was a pity. Still, the artwork is impressive and enjoyable.
Kind of disappointing but still may be worth a try if you like point&click puzzle games. Cool story, very weird at times. Some parts are a bit boring due to the lack of caring to it and the characters but it's fine.
friend brought it for me because my username is eartworm. It was pretty weird but it had me hooked. short but sweet
I adored this game. It was fun to play, because the style, the puzzles, the story and even the soundtrack was really cool. Thanks.
It has a fun story. It's worth what I paid for it.
I have mixed feelings about this game. Starting from the worst: well... gameplay is quite boring, story is pretty shallow and nothing unexpected happens at all. Graphics is really naive - I've expected more moody & dark climate. Riddles are... well, they don't exist :) But to be more positive: soundrack is quite good! The price is also nice, but I recommend to wait for the sale. I think this game would perfectly fit with a rainy, long and boring quiet day. It's easy and at the end of the day fun - maybe that's what producers wanted it to be.
Good!
Fun and very weird game. Classic point-and-click. The story didn't make much sense to me, but that didn't really bother me. I just enjoyed all the weirdness. The music is cool and art is nice enough. Played it twice to get different endings. Encountered no bugs.
the ending has a 2y old bug

Earthworms has been the subject of a (mostly unfunny) running joke between my girlfriend and I because this game feels like it's perpetually on sale for pocket change on the Nintendo Game Store. Although, I hold favorable views toward Earthworms that joke feels like a product of its obtuse nature as well as the low profile it keeps thematically. Even in the face of unpleasant imagery the game purposely takes a subdued approach in both color pallet as well as tone. In that way the Donnie Darko and Twin Peaks influence bleeds heavily. The story line at times is hard to grapple but surrealism often sits better when you can doubt your initial interpretation. If you are an adherent to the world of traditional point and clicks but have a taste for the bizarre, Earthworms is worth experiencing.
Beautiful artwork, creepy score, interesting sci-fi tale. The tone/feel is reminiscent of Lynch, Cronenberg, or Henenlotter. There is no voiceover work, but it's not necessary anyway, and the English translation is hilarious in some parts.
Great value at $0.59. Solid 4-6 hour game. I beat it within 5hrs with the Good ending the first time. I wish there were teleportation area/map add-ons, or a sequel to continue the storyline.
Such an interesting game! Loved the whole mystery behind it.
1 liralık bir oyuna göre çok iyi diyebilirim. Kendisi point and click adventure oyunu konusuda oldukça ilginçti.
Not much here. Very bland with a weird story.
nice game, little remind me of FranBow
The ending still, doesnt have enough impact on me
I almost want to ask for a refund despite only paying $0.60 for this game. I haven't even played it for 1.5 hours yet and I have encountered 2 different game breaking bugs where I had to load a previous save, because I did things in the wrong order. As a point and click game, that should never be able to happen. I shouldn't have to load a previous save just to progress, because I was too curious and clicked something before I was supposed to in the game.
With the game breaking bugs, even 60 cents seems like too much for a game this broken...
BUGS (spoilers)
When I went through the teleporter to the area where Lydia is, I figured out the sequence to reopen the portal before finding Lydia. As a result, it was open when we walked back and I talked to her and she went through. However, once I went back through the rock cave again, I was brought BACK to the portal and Lydia was there again, and we went through the same dialogue. This repeated until I loaded up an old save in order to progress

When catching the pest for the Old Man, I had already asked him about the trees before I set up the trap or even found the rock. I finished the floating rock/door puzzle too. I set up the trap, but nothing I did caught the pest- and seeing a youtube tutorial they set it up and caught the rat after talking to the Old Man about the trees. They also didn't put the meat in the trap, which I did, and couldn't take back from the trap to see if that helped either. Again, I had to load up an old save and go back and do things in the correct order or else I'd get stuck forever
The atmosphere and music are dark and eerie, which was nice. The dialogue was kinda off...I'm sure it was probably translated from another language. This may not be a deal breaker for most...I was kinda put off by it but it didn't stop me from playing.
What DID stop me from playing were multiple crashes. The game crashed three times at the same point, even after I restarted all the way from the beginning. I'm unsure what I can do to progress at this point, and since I was sitting on the fence at the time anyways, I just gave up on it. Maybe I'll come back to this at another time and try it after a patch or something.
If you need something to do for a bit with some challenging puzzles (sometimes annoyingly so), go for it. The plot and game overall was much stronger at the beginning, and at the end lost some of its charm. I thought that some of the things you needed to do to achieve an ending were too obscure to be easily done without googling it. The art was beautiful, and the music was good as well. For an indie game, it was worth the 50 cents and good laughs I got out of it, no matter the couple of unanswered questions it left me with (
who is the guy in the gilly suit??? how come i just get to leave lidia at the portal??
.
Ok, so the game atmosphere is somewhat nice, but I was unable to get the good ending because I didn't talk again (after I solved a quest) with with the same character (with whom I just finished a conversation) at the beginning of the game (if you don't do this, you can't break a wall at the end, even if you realize you have to break it, and you have the means to break it, the game just won't let you). It was not even obvious that if you talk again with a person just after the conversation is over they say something new. So I hate this kind of games. If you want to give me different endings, at least make the choices more obvious. Sure, I could lose 4 more hours of my life to replay the whole game, but it's not that good.
Pretty enjoyable overall. My first playthrough took about 2 hours with some pee breaks, and while I wish they were a tad harder, none of them took any mind bending logic which is a plus. Most people shouldn't have too much trouble with this game.
The atmosphere is nice and fitting, and while I appreciate the plot don't expect too much of it. Less is more IMO.
Very minimal replay value, it has 3 endings and they don't differ too much. I replayed to get the good ending and it only took me an extra 20 minutes.
Overall I can't say this is a 10 dollar game unless you really are intrigued, otherwise buy on sale. I paid a dollar or so, and was quite satisfied.
Short but interesting story. Game has this bizarre feeling to it, graphics only make new encounters more interesting and enlight us in dark story behind what happened. Multiple endings. Wroth buying on sale.
C-
I'm always wary when games cite their influences in the first lines of the description as one of their main selling points. You have to wonder if this means it will be the work of an author who was inspired by the tone of these films and movies, or just someone who enjoyed watching them and decided to try their hand at doing something similar without fully understanding them. This game feels very much like the latter.
The appeal of Donnie Darko, X Files, Twin Peaks, is not that they're weird, it's that there's a mystery and the weirdness is just a cipher that the viewer can decode if they pay enough attention and figure out the language. Earthworms seems to be constantly trying to be weird for the sake of being weird, but there's very little behind it. There is no common thread and literally none of its mysteries ever pay off. Storylines fizzle out before they ever develop, characters state their quirks and disappear forever and we learn absolutely nothing about the protagonist. Even if we take the titular earthworms to be the main story, the game seems mostly disinterested in even talking about that for too long. Also, I don't want to rag on too much about the poor translation from an indie studio, but if the dialogues were meant to make sense in its original language, they sure don't in English.
Puzzles are nothing to write home about. They mostly work, though they're made all the more laborious by the game refusing to give any kind of feedback for trying different things, resorting instead to the same stock phrase "it's pointless" every time.
Add to that a couple of bugs that can force you to load earlier saves to continue, and easy-to-miss actions early in the game that can prevent you from getting a good ending, none of which made the experience any better.
So why the thumbs up?
The visual and sound design are great. Both the music and the chosen art style are unique and truly interesting (though the backgrounds do get noticeably lazier as the game goes on) and for the first half hour it seems like it's going to be a truly great game. Besides, for its many flaws, the game is short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome too much and I prefer to be more lenient on indie efforts that are at least attempting to step outside the norm. At the end of the day, even if I can't say I enjoyed it too much, I'd still prefer 10 flawed "Earthworms" to Daedalic's entire catalogue of highly polished cookie-cutter adventures.
saidly there where some sexist comments from the main charactor and aswell racist comment from an other charactor, which made it not fun to play anymore :/
good game, would be better with Achievements and Cards
