Overall is somewhat funny. not a bad experiance for the price (I really wanted to punch the narrator when i opened a chest in a the dungeon and it was...well you will find out when u find that chest, be sure to be a loot goblin)

Cthulhu saves the world is a huge improvement on Breath of Death VII, to the point where I'm shocked it costs the same amount as that game. I am very glad the dev managed to build on so much from the first game, though, as that one was brimming with potential. Cthulhu saves the world has a better story, gameplay, and world. I honestly don't think there's a single thing about the previous game that I preferred. I can definitely see how this is the same team that made Cosmic Star Heroine, which I loved.
First of all, the gameplay. Instead of a max of 5 enemies, you can now have around 7 from what I've counted. Along with that, you can now target specific groups of enemies instead of just one or all. They're pretty cool changes, though not what mainly affects the combat. I'd say what I actually noticed about the combat is that you actually have to try to synergize your attacks and elements with your party and enemies! Hooray! I now have to actually think about what I'm going to cast instead of mindlessly attack and heal spamming. Yeah, so combat here is still fun, and now even more fun due to having to actually think about most of it. It's not the greatest combat of all time, it's still kinda simplistic, but hey, I'll take what I can get. I think the best way to get across how much more well-designed it is, is to let you know that this game is about double the length of Breath of Death VII, and doesn't tire me out until the very very end of the game. So overall, I am very happy with the improvements made to the combat system, especially since it keeps the game from being stale now that it lasts so long.
The world is also definitely better. There's now more areas to explore, ones which look way better visually and are far more varied than in BoD. Each area also has a story gimmick to keep them all narratively interesting, which I thought was a nice touch. There's also some more optional caves to explore, and they can be really hard. I would definitely only recommend doing the caves [spoiler]that you can only access by flying[/spoiler] near the end of the game.
However, all that's a wash. I could live with either of those aspects being a bit lame. No, what I really like about this game is the story. This game finally has a definite story! Yeah, it's still cheesy and coated in irony and meta-humor, but first of all I like that type of humor, but more importantly, the party members interact! Yep, there's several pseudo-cutscenes where we get to see all the characters, well, be actual characters and interact with each other. And it's fun! I don't wanna spoil anybody you'll meet, but I think they all manage to be quirky without feeling too stupid and funny without being eyeroll-worthy. I enjoy their interactions as well, I think the writing is honestly pretty funny, but it manages to do that whilst not constantly feeling like the whole thing is just one big dumb joke. The star of the cast, of course, is Cthulhu himself, who's constantly at odds with everyone else in the story, including the narrator, which I think is hilarious. I'unno it's just a really fun story to watch unfold, and on top of that I think it's fairly memorable! I think I got everything I wanted to get out of this game, honestly!
Don't really have much else to say, this is a big improvement on BoD. If you like simple JRPGs like I do, and enjoy cheesy writing that obviously had some care put into it, I think you'd be about as into this game as I am. Recommended!

Don't usually play such games, but this one is cute and fun and funny, the love put into it is visible. Although the random fights happen a bit too often for my taste, and also I didn't get how to check again the description of the passives I have.
Fun turn-based RPG that doesn't drag out or pad the story too much with unnecessary battles.
Great, goofy, and just fun to see Lovecraft stuff twisted into silly things. Might be slightly better than BoD7? I like that standard heal doesn't break the combo meter in this one.

A preposterous premise. An eldritch entity beyond human comprehension stepping into the role of a goody two-shoes RPG protagonist? Say it ain’t so! But it is so. Surely the irony is driving him… sane.
This has generally been a hit with people I discussed this with some years ago, a number of whom don’t care for the classic DQ/FF mold in the first place. Give it a shot; it’s not expensive.

Contrariwise, perhaps you are totally unfamiliar with Yog-Sothothery, and this is your gateway to the middle ground of tabletop horror roleplaying, with the psychological safety of a communal experience, but one where danger levels can be given respect.

So, this game has a very quiet sort of comedy to it, and very few of the jokes ever felt in your face or like the game was trying to say "Look at me! Look at me! Isn't this so funny?" which on the one hand was kind of nice because I feel it's a much graver sin for a joke to try too hard than to not try hard enough, but on the other hand it meant that a lot of jokes just sort of fell flat and just left me thinking "I mean, okay, I get it, I guess" without really laughing. As an example, there's a town overrun with zombies at one point in the game and one of the NPC's hiding out in a building says when you talk to them something like "I just paid off this house. No way am I leaving now", and that's it, that's the whole joke, and, yeah, I get the idea and all and that's a silly reason not to go when your life is at risk and everything, but the joke is still just hardly a gutbuster.
The game has an overwhelming quantity of jokes, and most NPC's you talk to will have some comedic dialogue to say, pretty much every drawer in the game has a short piece of unique joke text when you look inside, all the enemy types in the game have their own comedic description in combat, and honestly thanks to the game's quieter humor tone none of this ever really gets annoying when you encounter yet another joke every two minutes but it's honestly fine the whole way through.
Overall, even though the actual number of times the game made me laugh was kind of low, I'd still give this a passing grade on this aspect, and it was just generally enjoyable enough.

So, I will say, the game "feels" nice to play, and all the menus are very fast, movement works well when you're going around a dungeon and it's not clunky or anything, and I really really really appreciate how you can tell the devs put thought into the game, and what I mean is, most of the text is fast and easy to mash through BUT when you level up, you're often presented with a choice between two bonuses like "Would you rather have +10 attack or +10 defense?" or whatever, and for these moments specifically the game does not let you just mash through the text but it specifically stops for second to make sure you notice what's coming ahead and don't accidentally pick a perk you didn't want while you were just trying to get through the "You defeated all the enemies and earned such and such EXP" text or whatever, and so because of this, I never once while playing accidentally picked the wrong thing, and it was just nice and I honestly wish more games would just have basic systems like this in place to make them better, and I honestly wonder sometimes how many developers actually take the time to sit down and play their own games.
So, the combat kind of tries to throw in a couple of different systems to make it more interesting, and there's this whole insanity gimmick where certain abilities make enemies insane which gives minor upsides for you at the cost of major downsides and is really more of a self imposed challenge than anything, or there are the duo attacks that don't really add much besides being the same as regular abilities but a little bit stronger because two characters are using them, but one of the big ones is the combo system, and for each hit you do to the enemies your combo goes up by one, and there are these finisher attacks that get stronger the higher your combo is and reset it when they're used, and so the basic idea is that you might spend a fight slowly chipping away at a boss's health and then all at once after you've gotten a big combo finish them off with some huge blow, and more than that there are these other abilities that are not finishers and that don't get stronger based on the combo but that DO reset the combo when used, and the idea is that these are just generally really good abilities (As an example, one of them is a full HP restore + revive + cure spell all in one, while your next best healing ability that doesn't reset your combo might be just some random minor healing spell), and so the game is just asking you "Would you rather have access to a nice ability throughout the fight or would you rather do a ton of damage in 10 turns?" which, I mean, is a real choice, I guess, and neither option is necessarily better than the other, but my problem with it is that whichever you go for, neither one is honestly that interesting for its own sake, and it's just a choice between two different flavors of the same base gameplay, and that's what I'm trying to get at here is that the base gameplay is just not itself that interesting, and this is a VERY basic RPG and at the end of the day the gimmicks just don't add that much and it pretty much comes down to "Just select your best attacks. Heal if you're dying or something. Repeat until the enemies die" without terribly much decision making or strategy in it, and there just isn't quite enough to really make it feel worthwhile.
Except that's not completely true, and for the boss battles specifically it can be helpful if at the start of the fight you cast your spells to make your party stronger, use your spells that deal damage to enemies EVERY TURN for the entire rest of the fight even though you only cast them one time and that honestly are one of the more unusual types of abilities in this game, and just generally prepare yourself for this and THEN default to just alternating between attack and heal, and my point is, is this REALLY all that deep? No, but it gives the ILLUSION of being deep, and that's all I want is the illusion of doing something, and if I play Marvel VS Capcom 3 and get my butt handed to me all game but then just go Dark Phoenix and make a comeback off of that, am I really the greatest of all time? No, I just used a massively gimmicky character in what was already a massively gimmicky game and a chimp could have done the same thing, but in the moment it feels good and I can think "Yeah! Yeah! You see that, loser? Took out 3 of your characters with one of mine!" and that's all I want in a game is to just feel like I'm doing something meaningful here, and the boss battles in this game do kind of deliver and I get to pretend it was some profound thought to think "What if... I used the ability that does damage every turn early in the fight rather than later to maximize the damage it does?" But if that part's actually okay, what's the problem with this game and why is this review thumbs down? Well, because boss battles are infrequent and you spend the majority of your time on random encounters, and honestly I don't actually dislike random encounters in general and I know a lot of people seem to hate them and I sometimes hear them referred to as an outdated mechanic and stuff, but I personally have never really had a problem with them in and of themselves, but in this game in particular, though, the random encounters are such a slog to get through, and I put up with it for a while, but it eventually got to the point where the enemies were JUST hard enough where if I mentally autopiloted the fight I would die, but JUST easy enough where it wasn't fun or interesting having to kill them over, and over, and OVER, and it severely didn't help that the game gives you what feels like ten thousand different abilities for each character and every single fight you're constantly scrolling through the same menus again going past your old abilities you don't use anymore or that were never that good in the first place trying to find the one thing you actually want, and the game just became the endless boring scrolling simulator, and honestly if they had made one little change and allowed you to shortcut abilities for faster access, it would have been ten times better and probably tolerable to just hit Ctrl + X or whatever to get to everyone's best attack immediately, but without that option, my brain was just melting, man, and that's the primary reason I have to give this a thumbs down.

Em relação a narrativa, se trata de uma história bem divertida e humorística, subvertendo o gênero, na qual um vilão de peso como Cthulhu é o protagonista e "herói" (não que isso seja inovador, mas cai muito bem numa comédia como essa).
Pontos positivos: fácil de jogar, mas também, desafiador. Além do que já foi elogiado diante da narrativa - com personagens e chefes carismáticos.
Pontos negativos: do mesmo modo que simula a jogabilidade e sistema de rpgs antigos, também apresenta os mesmos defeitos, com diversas repetições - da cidade nova para a Dungeon -, salvo de algumas exceções divertidas (ex: o seu inicio nas montanhas com os heróis genéricos, a fase da cidade zumbi e dos alienigenas). Ademais, em diversos momentos a dificuldade fica desbalanceada, ora está muito fácil, ora está muito difícil).
Ainda não joguei seu antecessor - Breath of Death - e seu sucessor - sua continuação de Natal. Mas com certeza pretendo jogar futuramente!

[b]+ Поліпшення графіки, рушія, UI та UX.[/b] У порівнянні з попередньою грою розробника, CSTW виглядає суттєво приємніше. Задній фон кожної битви тепер не просто залитий чорною фарбою. Тепер він завжди відповідає локації на якій вона почалася. Крім того, у локацій тепер з'явився певний вертикальний дизайн. Тобто не просто перехід на нижчий чи вищий поверх, а існування верхнього чи нижчого шару в рамках одного поверху.

This game is better and funnier that it has any right to be. I was seriously impressed with how many references to Lovecraft's mythos they packed in. If you like old JRPGs, Cthulhu and all his abominable, eldritch friends, and have a sense of humor, this game is easily worth the (low) price. And the bonus modes are a nice way of adding replay value; personally I really enjoyed the Cthulhu's Angels remix.

This game builds on everything Breath of Death VII did and opens up the game even more. It's still quick and gives you some options to customize each character to your play style.
From the same developer as Breath of Death VII this one seems more advanced graphics wise. It is another JRPG parody this time you play as Cthulhu yes that Cthulhu and your quest is to save the world so you can get your powers back. I am enjoying it and plan to finish it next Monday.

What a gem. I'm telling all my friends to buy this game. Hell, anyone who has ever had a fancy for eldrich horror or HP Lovecraft will love it. There's constant humor, Easter eggs, dad jokes galore. Does this dev have a Patreon? I want to give them MORE money. I can't say enough good about this game.

I think one of the reasons I really love indie games from small teams/solo devs is that it gives me hope that one day I'll actually finish a project lol. It shows how, when people really narrow their scope and work really, really hard at something, you can get something done that's pretty damn cool. CStW is this exact thing. Impressively tight turn-based combat, endearingly cringe writing, solid-but-kinda-tumblr-anime-fanart-y art, and a simple premise: "you're Cthulhu, go save the world (so you can destroy it yourself)".
I'm 5 hours in, having a blast, and it's cheapernhell. Great fun-to-cost ratio and some cool features (combo-based combat, developer commentary) make this an easy recommend for RPG enjoyers!
Basically it's a bit more in each aspect than Breath of Death VII. Longer gameplay, more refined battle system, better writing, grapics and music and it's still dirty cheap title from early days of modern indie games. I laughed more than once during Cthulhu heroic adventure (despite i haven't read any Lovecraft's stories) and had good time beating dungeons. Worth to play.

Cthulhu Saves the World succeeds by making you complicit in cosmic irony—you'll laugh while participating in a narrative designed to mock your participation. It's a competent JRPG wrapped in meta-awareness that accidentally reveals gaming's greatest truth: we'll accept any moral framework, no matter how contradictory, as long as the mechanics are satisfying and the dialogue occasionally makes us smirk at our own insignificance.

Turn based RPGs are not my favorite genre. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed Cthulhu Saves the World. It has a great sense of humor. I particularly like the enemy descriptions such as the crab enemies with "no weak points" for those who remember the "Giant Enemy Crab" meme. It also eliminates some of the frustrations of random encounters by limiting them to a specified number per area. I am a fan of H. P. Lovecraft, so seeing Cthulhu as a protagonist in this manner was a lot of fun. I love the soundtrack.

I'm especially impressed by the ability to walk under bridges, such cool new technology use shows how this game was pushing the limits of technology ;). First of all, the price of game is quite low that I won't give thumbdown to complain and it is indeed good for its BGM, the overall converation scripts and UI. And it maybe good for those who can enjoy long time RPG battles and the story of this game. For me the flaw of this game is too significant to play.
First, I can't save game at any time and the map is too large for the gap between save points. That almost ruins all game experience for me.
Second, the in-game scenes are lack of decoration, bad looking. The scenes are something like 1st generation Pokemon map but 10x large. Scenes are sometimes similar to each other, make you easy to get lost there. I remember I took several battles then start to wonder, is it a deeper scene? Then I saw the bridge, oh, maybe I go a wrong way. Then started to go back. Then I saw another bridge, crab, that is where I come. Both of these scenes have bridges and none of them are distinguishable.
The disappoint moments.And scenes look similar to each other.

За таку ціну цілком приємна не надто довга РПГ з купою деталей, не зовсім жахливими (хоча вже старими й надто мейнстрімними, але най, гумор то не моє) жартами. На мій смак останні години були вже занадто, розроб в курсі, але як є. Я свого часу почав цю серію з Cthulhu Saves Christmas й не шкодую, вона набагато легше грається й це не через складність. Тут на різні моди й проходження тієї самої історії під різним "соусом" мене вже не вистачило, але основну історію пройшов, потішився й пішов далі.

Ignore the small amount of hours. I played both Breath of Death and this back on the Xbox Live Arcade days. They are both hilarious tributes to the NES/SNES JRPGs and deserve a lot of love. as of this writing (steam winter sale), they are bundled together for less than $1 and are absolutely worth it even for the full prices individually not on sale. Do not listen to the haters that expect too much out of a 2011 indie JRPG parody. it is great fun, especially if you are into old school JRPGs

The first RPG in the Cthulhu Saves series, this is a wonderfully curated retro-RPG for lovers of the NES, Genesis or SNES days. The humor is very self aware and the loathing that Cthulhu has for his teammates is oh so delightful! A very well done sophomore effort by Zeboyd after Breath of Death VII: The Beginning! Give it a play!
Relatively short parody RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome.
The turn based combat isn't anything special, but can be challenging at times, and has spikes in difficulty at the start of each dungeon and boss fights.
Each level up your characters can choose from one of two paths, increasing different stats, or offering different spells and abilities to build each character differently depending on what you need or want. I think there are some clear choices most of the time, but you can get away with whatever I think.
Combat is mostly slinging your strongest spells and attacks while managing your MP during grinds. Can be tight early game, but you get a lot more breathing room later on. Boss fights you'll want to build up your combo meter with multi-hit attacks and unleash your stronger combo enders. You get into a good rhythm with it.
The story is funny and pulls from JRPG and anime tropes, but doesn't get terribly deep. But for a sub-10 hour RPG, that's probably fine.
Overall not bad, and for the price point it's hard to complain too much.
Another near miss for me. Better then the parody game that was Breath of Death VII, has more of its own identity, beyond going "hehe member that thing RPGs do?" *giggle* while actually doing said thing and thats it.
And in a way with the complete over saturation of "old gods" lore in games in recent years it almost feels more timely then every to make a twist on it and honestly anything that disrepects the source given the creator of said genre is a bonus.
But ultimately there was nothing from my time playing it that really made me want to stick around and get to know these characters and this world (which from a glace at a guide looks to be surprisingly long), with some many games in my backlog that I'm driving to clear out at last I want to put my time in things that aren't just derivative of those titles to begin with.

The overall game is good enough to stand on its own merits, featuring a great soundtrack, a comedic cast of characters and an abundance of bonus features. Great replay value that features an additional DLC story once you complete the game too.
For the price, it's an absolute steal for the entertainment you get. Definitely recommend if you're a fan of our lord and saviour, Cthulhu.

Just like breath of death, a very enjoyable game. It's incredibly cheap to buy and very funny.
I'd recommend just sticking it on easy and blasting straight through it for the story and dialog.
At first glance, Cthulhu Saves the World looks like a standard retro JRPG, but the way it handles its story and humor gives it a lot more personality. The story begins with Cthulhu losing his powers and being told he needs to turn into a hero to restore them. What follows is a delightfully strange quest where he constantly argues with the narrator and protests about having to be good. While the game keeps you on a fairly linear path, you can venture into a few bonus dungeons when you want to explore beyond the main story. Each party member you pick up has their own style and skills, and there’s even a little nod to the developer’s other game, Breath of Death VII.
The game eliminates many frustrations that usually come with these kinds of games. You can move quickly, and holding the shift key lets you run even faster, making exploration more convenient. Other features include the ability to save anywhere and fully restore health after battles (though magic points are only partially replenished). The game also has a party system where up to four characters can fight at once. Even the unused party members continue to gain XP and can be swapped in at any time outside of combat.
Each dungeon and area on the world map only has a set number of random battles, but you can still start fights yourself through the menu whenever you want to level up. Fighting is actually pretty engaging thanks to cooperative attacks between characters, combo chains, special finishers, and an insanity system that changes how enemies behave. Enemies also become 10% stronger with each round of combat. Every time you level up, you pick between two upgrades, giving you a bit of customization. Completing the story opens up some extra game modes, one of which gives you a brand new protagonist, fresh dialogue, and an entirely different party to experience.
The game is not too long overall, but I had a lot of fun playing through it.
I loved the humour and easter eggs in this! Combat felt a bit less fleshed out and repetitive; I think the featured effects like the combo count and insanity could've been better explained and fell a little short of their potential. Ended up spamming the same few spells/skills to get through the majority of fights. Definitely worth it for fans of old school JRPGs!
After playing Breath of Death 7 I wanted to play this game. It has the same gameplay as this game only difference is the range of characters and story. You have 6 party members that do different things for your party. I only used the first 4 you get since I used them a lot so I never used the other 2. I played in easy mode since there's no reason to play it in hard mode to get bonuses. The game has you play as Cthulhu who gets party members along the way. He meets a girl who falls in love with him the first time she sees him. Every time you level up you can get different spells, passive skills, and stat boosts to fit your character. You can find money and loot in the chest to help you out in combat. For some extra dungeons, you need to talk to people to do them. Money is easy to get in the game when you progress further into the game and going into the inn is free and it saves your game so money isn't a problem. You can find 1-ups and potions in the chest to help you out in combat. The combo meters increase the amount of damage you use for your magic that uses the combo attack. Every turn the enemy has increased damage making them hit harder. When you can fly you can go to a dungeon to get loot. Some chests give a stat boost so look out for those. Some parts I got stuck on like the bonus dungeon with 4 bosses which was annoying to the point that I backtracked to grind before fighting them making it easier to beat them. I reached level 50 making it more easy to beat the final boss. You have spells that can hit only one enemy, a group, or all enemies. Some spells and attacks can hit multiple enemies increasing the bonus gage. Some spells you can only use once I think but I'm not sure since I rarely use those spells. If you're gonna get this game get it when it's on sale since you get another game along with it which is under 1 dollar when it's a bundle. I hope my review makes you think twice about getting this game. Have a good day.
I cannot recommand this game. I give it 2 out of 10 points. The humor is funny sometimes. But there are only very frew dialoges. So this is not enough reason to play this game. The battles are repetitive and borring. This would not be a problem if there was more story.
The game is very short to beginn with. But it still feels very stretch out. The encounter rate is insane. It feels like a battle every three steps. There where so many fights that I often forgot in which direction I was heades because I only got a few steps ahead. The Doungeons are constructed in a way where they are all labyrinths that make you run in circles often. This would not be a problem and it would be fun to find the right way out, if there was not this insane encounter rate.
But a game which designs it doungeons in a way where you always run into dead ends but than have en extremly high encounter rate. So that you always loose sight from which direction you where headed because it bombards you with enemies. You will just get lost more often. I really would have liked to just turn encounters off so I could finally navigate trough the doungeons.
I was hoping the story would at least be fun. And it had funny moments. But after the last doungeon I didnt even get any story moment the game was sending me directly to the next doungeon. So I will quit now. Its not worth playing for this almost no Story in return. Maybe I will watch the rest of the story in some letsplay.
To me it feels like they stretched an 3 hours game to an 10 hours game. With high encounter rate and confusing doungeons, because so everyone runs in circles because you dont know where you are going if enemies attack you every second.
The battle system is very bad. Its no fun at all. The battle system is like classic Final Fantasy Games but every turn all enemies become 10% harder. This is not fun because it forces you to just use your strongest attacks all the time. This takes strategic planing away because you dont have much option to think about long therm.
I understand that they wanted to make something new. But a system that makes many of your skills completly useless because they get outclassed buy other skills is no fun. In this system you have no reason to get to know all off your skills. Simply spam the strongest. If they would remove the plus 10% each round system the game would become much better. Because than random battles would be less enoying.

Cthulhu Saves the World is a Lovecraftian comic RPG from indie developer, Zeboyd Games, and a followup to their similar Breath of Death VII ...which I haven’t played yet because I thought Cthulhu was the first one ...it isn’t.
Pretentiously named ‘Cthulhu Saves the World: Super Hyper Enhanced Championship Edition Alpha Diamond DX Plus Alpha FES HD - Premium Enhanced Game of the Year Collector's Edition (without Avatars!)’ on the PC, the game was originally developed for XBLA before Kickstarting its way to Steam, where it’s regularly hocked for a pittance, along with Breath of Death VII.
So finally, a brand new PC, able to play the latest and greatest and what's the first thing we play? ...A 16-bit RPG, because BioShock Infinite is still downloading! Remember old Commodore games that used to have a little mini-game while the proper one loaded in the background? If you do, you’re getting old!
So, Cthulhu Saves the World is a self-knowing, comedy, 16-bit RPG ‘starring’ old squid-headed Cthulhu, a one time badass who gets all his powers nicked at the outset, and so he has to get them back.
The game has a narrator (in text form) who talks to the player, and the self-aware Cthulhu is constantly chipping in with fourth-wall breaking banter. The characters you meet along the way and their interaction is probably one of the highlights here, with a well written and often amusing script, but your enthusiasm may begin to wane as the game drags on.
The PC version also Includes a directors commentary, with additional text logs activated through numerous ‘question marks’ you find along the way.
Cthulhu features a tile-based overworld (like any 16-bit RPG), with combat shifting to a static, first person view, where you get a good look at the enemy sprites, similar to what you find in games like Dragon Quest.
Random encounters are frequent, and as ever, grind on you more and more as the hours start to rack up.
Interestingly, the game does have a very welcome feature, whereby if you defeat so many enemies within each area, the encounters stop until you reach the next room, giving you a chance to explore, unmolested. What a good idea this is! The only trouble is, the number of encounters you need to reach in order for them to cease is usually so high, it doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference unless you’re looking to spend ages in each one... I found myself just wanting to get through them!
‘Dungeons’, you see, are a series of large, maze-like rooms with LOTS of interconnecting paths which get more and more complex as you progress. There are a number of chests containing stuff worth having in each room, but the sheer size of these areas makes navigating increasingly frustrating (and the constant random encounters certainly don’t help). You can find yourself, quite by accident, stumbling upon the correct path and locating a room's exit, knowing there are chests you missed still in the room, and knowing they probably have something decent in, but it feels like too much of a pain to go back.
The game got hard later on, possibly because I couldn’t be bothered to hunt down all those chests in previous Dungeons ...which in turn meant I’d keep dying, which made the game even less fun.
Combat is menu driven, in a ‘classic’ style, which also means it isn’t particularly deep but the simplicity gives it a fast pace at least.
Most of the time, you’re just bashing away on the Return key to perform the default attack for each character, no time-consuming menu navigation or long animated attack sequences to sit through... but it also means the combat is not very engaging.
One pretty unique aspect is a combo system, whereby enemy attacks get increasingly stronger with every turn, so it is in your best interest to beat them ASAP before they beef up enough to crush you in a single turn.
Rather than make things more interesting though, this just means you can die very easily and quickly depending on which group of enemies you randomly come up against, which is very annoying if you’ve not saved for a while...
The difficulty is just all over the place, with you running into a mix of easy fights or impossible ones, within the same area during those last few hours. It’s just pot luck at this point, and I was having to save every few seconds as I inched forward, frequently having to reload after hitting another impossible (or at least unnecessarily difficult) set of enemies.
One thing I did like was the level up mechanic. Here, every time you occur the necessary XP, you get a choice of one of two perks to buff the stats of each character or grant new abilities. You get a full description of each, and have to make a choice which is more beneficial to you. It’s simple but really helps to keep you going, knowing you’re never far from the next level and perk choice.
This still isn’t enough to overcome the fact that playing just feels like too much of a slog however. You spend most of the battles just jabbing away at that return key, just keeping an eye on everyones health and occasionally healing. Admittedly, this is a very lazy tactic but it does help speed things up, thus relieving some tedium ...you do still die a lot, since you’re trying to rush through, so maybe it’s not such a good idea ...the combat is just so boring though!
All turn-based games just seem to bore the ♥♥♥♥ out of me these days in fact, and Cthulhu Saves the World was no exception. It’s the type of game you have to play whilst doing something else, like listening to the radio, because there isn’t enough substance there to distract you on its own.
The game is what it is. You certainly can’t complain at the price but it’s hard to get enthusiastic about either.

Love this developer. Have absolutely had a blast playing all their new stuff, and this is great going back and seeing where it all started. Having a blast with this! It's a great old-school turn-based RPG with good humor in throughout!

Bought this game years ago and never played it. Took me about 8 hours to complete. Played almost entirely on my Steam deck. This is a great homage to classic jrpgs. It can be a bit challenging but the gameplay kept me coming back. The way the game does set amounts of battles per area is a genius way of handling random encounters. The game is dirt cheap and has some great humor in it. Def worth picking up if you like old school jrpgs like Dragonquest/Final Fantasy.
Genuinley an amazing game I got the package on sale (for £0.49)but its easily worth the full price (£2.49).
Its great satire with loveable charcters, the humour is by far the star of the show and if you dont enjoy it then you won't liike this game. The combat is tough with enemies scaling damage witheach round. Definitely pushes you towards ending combat quickly. So dont neglect the speed stat like I did

20 часов мучений и гринда. Эти сраные лабиринты, без какой либо мини карты, с*ка. 2 шага сделаешь и начинается битва. Пойдёшь не в ту сторону, попытаешься вернуться - битва, застрял в проходе и пытаешься пройти между двух пикселей - битва. Это просто ужас. Юморок детский, местами забавно, а местами кринж.
Если есть терпение - покупайте. В основном - не рекомендую.
