Cleo: A Pirate's Tale

Cleo is a solo-developed, top-down, pixel-art, retro, pirate adventure with a lot of nostalgic flair, humor and a linear story, inspired by the old Zelda games and the classic LucasArts adventure games.

Storyline

Cleo is a 14-year-old cynical girl, living a repetitive life with her father in a bar. She knows everything about the epic adventures of pirate legend Captain Cabeca, but in her everyday life, she is just surrounded by boring fishermen and unsuccessful pirates, hanging around at the counter. But when Cleo finds a strange pirate-logbook and sees a ghost, who gives her mysterious hints, her boring life is about to get turned upside down. She is thrown into a dangerous adventure and finds herself in a world of lies, deceive, greed and bad breath - the world of pirates - and most of them are after the same thing: THE TREASURE OF ETERNAL MEMORY.

A passionate love letter to retro point & click adventures from a solo developer. Visually its art style is timeless, with a beautiful atmosphere, animations, and references. Audio is masterfully produced, everything is voice acted to perfection. puzzles are all well thought out, and the story is very cute, funny and engaging.

There truly isn't that many negatives aside from a few soft locks, no real replayability (aside from achievement hunting), the first puzzle will test you so you know what you've signed up for, and its fairly short which many may not like at this price.

Most of the achievements are obtained by playing, with quite a few requiring a bit more effort. The coolest achievement has to be reading all the messages left in bottles (LETTER OPENER - PLATINUM), as they're all written by supporters. The hardest achievement is having to win all the kraken fodder games on your first try, throughout the entire playthrough (KRAKEN FODDER GOD). one unlucky roll and you're hard resetting the entire run (however this can be cheesed with savestates).

BUT would I recommend it? well... Absolutely. While I think the dev deserves every penny to help create future bangers, zero excuse not to pick this one up on sale if you've had your eyes on it!

What a gorgeous game, a beautiful ode to the point and click adventures of the past. Lots of humor, not too hard and a fun way to spend a good few nights.

Really cute, about 4 hours long, it's very much an isometric LucasArts P&C Adventure. The Pixel style and many of the animations could be right out of DotC.

The puzzles are good, there's some that interconnect multiple locations - If you could do the monkey wrench, you'll be more than fine here. Added to the mix is a card game, that's quite alright too and comes into play from time to time.

All in all it could have used a few hours more game to be honest, there's a lot of promise in everything but it plays like a really fleshed out proof of concept. Not saying any of what is here is bad at all, it's all great in fact!

I just want more!

A very charming, albeit short, click and point adventure that deserves more attention and sales. Listen, I won't say it's perfect. I found to be incredibly easy (except for ONE thing near the end which felt like a spike of good old moonlogic) and the fourth act felt incredibly rushed, like it should have been twice as long as it actually is. It has however lovely graphics, a heartwarming little story and an especially fantastic dub. Like... I have seen triple A studios with worse voice actors.
Especially if you are a Click & Point beginner or maybe want to play a game with, for example, your kid, this is a perfect choicer however and well worth the price.
