fue mas entretenido instalar el juego que jugarlo en si
A fun sequel to "Escape the game"
If you can't find it, it may have been geoblocked in your region.

why would you do this to me
Por vezes senti que o diálogo se arrastou demais, algumas partes definitivamente poderiam ser menores
A gameplay não é nada muito elaborada, é uma plataforma simples com umas arminhas dahora
O forte do jogo pra mim está na história e metalinguagem
it's a bit of a chore to get there, but I have to say all the last part is pretty sick, and the ending makes it all worth it
i rlly wanted to like it but i just cant, i thought it would have a 4th wall do script stuff on your computer like doki doki but no :( also the game is like 90% dialog u kinda just have to sit through and cant even speed up, sometimes u cant even move or anything. is feels so slow too. also i have so many point things and character would say they are seeling stuff just for it to be empty, what am i supposed to do with all these points?
great game but [strike] sad [/strike]
Break the Game, developed and published by Simon Fredholm, is an unconventional indie experience that deliberately blurs the boundary between player, character, and game itself. From the very beginning, it makes clear that this is not a traditional adventure or platformer meant to be consumed passively. Instead, it presents itself as a self-aware, often chaotic conversation between the game and the person playing it, centered around a character named Kevin who claims to be trapped inside the game world. This premise immediately sets a strange and intimate tone, inviting the player into a narrative that constantly questions agency, control, and the nature of interaction in video games.
At its core, the game combines light platforming and shooter mechanics with heavy narrative emphasis. Movement and shooting are straightforward and responsive, allowing players to navigate levels without frustration, but these mechanics are rarely the main attraction. Rather than escalating difficulty or introducing complex systems, the game repeatedly pauses to address the player directly through dialogue, monologues, and fourth-wall breaks. Kevin frequently communicates his thoughts, anxieties, and frustrations, often in long, unskippable sequences that intentionally disrupt traditional pacing. This design choice reinforces the feeling of being stuck inside a game that refuses to behave normally, mirroring Kevin’s own predicament, but it can also test the player’s patience depending on their tolerance for extended narrative interruptions.
The writing is the game’s strongest and most polarizing element. It oscillates between absurd humor, emotional vulnerability, and self-referential commentary on game design itself. Characters acknowledge tropes, criticize mechanics, and occasionally mock the player’s expectations, creating a tone that is both playful and unsettling. While some players may find the dialogue overly verbose or indulgent, others will appreciate how it creates a surprisingly strong emotional connection to otherwise simple, abstract characters. The game often succeeds in making Kevin feel less like a scripted avatar and more like a conscious entity struggling to be heard, which gives weight to even mundane interactions.
Visually, Break the Game adopts a minimalist aesthetic built around basic geometric shapes, clean lines, and bold colors. On paper, the presentation seems extremely simple, but it is used effectively to convey emotion and personality. Text animation, timing, and placement play a major role in storytelling, with dialogue appearing in ways that reflect urgency, hesitation, or breakdowns in communication. The sparse environments and abstract characters help keep the focus on interaction and narrative rather than spectacle, reinforcing the idea that the game is more about conversation and reflection than visual immersion.
Sound design and music are used sparingly but purposefully. Background audio supports the mood without dominating it, allowing silence and minimalism to heighten moments of tension or introspection. When music does appear, it tends to underscore emotional beats rather than gameplay milestones, further emphasizing the narrative-driven nature of the experience. This restrained approach complements the game’s pacing, though some players may wish for more auditory variety during longer play sessions.
Despite its creativity, the game is not without notable shortcomings. Combat and platforming remain relatively shallow throughout, and players seeking mechanical depth or evolving gameplay systems may feel underwhelmed. The overall experience is also fairly short, and replay value is limited once the narrative has been fully experienced. Certain design decisions, such as unconventional save management or intentionally awkward interactions, can feel more irritating than clever, especially for players who prefer smoother, more traditional usability.
Ultimately, Break the Game is a title that succeeds not by refinement or breadth, but by commitment to its concept. It is unapologetically strange, heavily narrative-focused, and willing to alienate some players in pursuit of a distinctive voice. For those who enjoy experimental storytelling, meta-commentary, and games that actively challenge the relationship between player and software, it offers a memorable and often thought-provoking journey. For others, its verbosity and limited mechanical ambition may feel exhausting. Either way, Break the Game stands as a bold indie experiment that prioritizes expression and self-awareness over convention, leaving a lasting impression precisely because it refuses to behave like a normal game.

I liked this game. I really did. I was immersed in it, I was happy, I was sad, and it had a LOT of funny moments... but then the game kept going... and going... it felt like it just was never going to end... Boring dialogue, loooong, unskippable scenes...
Then, I finally got to the ending. When all was said and done, I felt empty, and tired. The game lost all meaning, and my play time lost all meaning.
I will only remember this game for its insulting ending, and the Jontron song,
I just cant get into it.
I thought the dialog was amusing, I was really looking forward to pony island vibes... but the gameplay just cant keep my attention. The controls feel really loose and someone put soap on the surface of everything - so it feels like every platform has slight ice physics... cause everyone LOVES those. Additionally, the platforming was not engaging - TBF, how could it be with super janky controls? There are just better games out there... for the same price.
Honestly feeling like its a chore to go back to the game, and for that reason - I'm not going to finish it after sinking 3 hours in. I will agree - as others say: The humor is random meme like and there is a lot of reading - but the dialog is really the only thing going for it... so if that's enough for you - you may enjoy it!
It was fun, I liked the concept, and story. Uhhh I played this game years ago so I'm going by what I remember sorry the review isn't that insightful lol
5% gameplay 95% reading
So much talking.
too many cutscenes
Interesting and humorous! A clear tongue-in-cheek riff on games like "thomas was alone". The shapes have feelings.
É divertido a dinamica
"Break The Game" attempts to be clever, funny, and deep with its narrative and it fails on all of these fronts. The gameplay is barely serviceable and any ounce of fun is sucked out by constant dialogue. So much dialogue. I have no problem with it text in video games but the amount here is staggering. 90% of the text is just unfunny early 2000s "ZOMG" humor. Maybe if the game was 1/3 the length, I would excuse all of it's problems, but in its current state, it just drags on. Do not buy this game. I got it on sale for $2 and thought I'd be playing a cute, meta game. Instead I am $2 poorer and have lost 2.5 hours of my life that I will never get back.
I endure the dialogs and the easy gameplay for some time. But the "loadind thing" level was just unnecessarly long. I got big hopes for this game but it is just boring.
Called me the R slur out of nowhere
Up with Red Dead Redemption 2 in terms of story-telling!
A quirky platformer that really reminded me of playing Thomas Was Alone back in 2012 for some reason. I had a lot of fun, although didn't quite conntect with the character and the visuals got a bit overwhelming after a while.
Pretty funny. It's wasn't an amazing story, But had fun getting all achievements.
8/10
This game was just bs. The gameplay was easy and very boring plattforming, for 5 minutes until someone or something starts talking to you. Again and again. Its so much bla bla bla all the time, you don't even get to play really. I gave it another shot and couldn't make it to the end, because its that boring just listeing to some story ALL THE TIME. I wanted to play a game, not read a book...
I stumbled upon this game randomly, but I really don't regret buying it, controls are good and the arcade platforming is cool, but where this game really is great is its writing.
I highly encourage you to play it and to finish it, it's a small gem !
this is genuinely the worst narrative i have ever experienced in a game. i wish i could break this game.
Friend got me the game for two bucks on sale. Honestly? Probably worth two bucks.
Break the Game aspires to be not only a platformer but also a complex metanarrative game that examines what it means to be a character in a constructed world that definitely isn't functioning properly... perhaps intentionally. You can see lots of its inspirations in its bones, and it reaches ever upward, trying to stand among the metanarrative greats like Undertale, Pony Island, DDLC, and OneShot.
Does it succeed in these endeavors? Absolutely not. Not even close.
But despite shooting for the moon and somehow ending up faceplanting into the dirt, Break the Game still manages to delightfully charming. It's completely genuine in its attempts at being something greater than it is, and I can't help but enjoy its earnestness. It's not just ironic enjoyment, either, quite a few of the jokes hit *perfectly* and there's a decent balance between challenge and ease in its difficulty (it's a pretty easy game, all things considered, but that doesn't mean you don't have to pay attention to what you're doing). There's plenty of little easter eggs to reward exploring, and it's easy to find yourself being drawn into the game's little world.
Is it a high quality game? No. But I enjoyed playing it immensely, and found myself grinning the whole way through. Break the Game is something you can tell was a labor of love, and I at least can feel that as I played it. It may never be the best game of all time (or even in the top 100) but it will always have a special place in my heart, I think. It's a cute little game that's worth giving a shot, if you've got a couple hours to spare!
It's charming and fun, and everyone can use a little more charm and fun in their lives! 4/5 Stars.
A pretty basic metroidvania with a surprisingly good story, clever mechanics, and a fantastic soundtrack. I dig it!
A lot of taking in the game witch sometimes made game boring and sadly i could't skip dialogue.
I thought it was a fun and thought-provoking game overall, there are so reealllly slow sections though with barely any game play
Simply put.. it's a bad game and a waste of time and money. You'll have more fun staring at a wall.
Half Thomas Was Alone, one-third There Is No Game, and a little Undertale thrown in... but ALL awesome, with a great (albeit unoriginal) soundtrack, interesting characters (Satan was my favorite), lots of groovy firearms and McGuffins to collect, and some super-fun thought-provoking existential dread! Short and silly in places, but definitely underrated and...
What's that? You say you don't find existential dread particularly thought-provoking or fun? Oh well... sorry, Kevin, I tried...
It just didn't leave an impact on me. If it does for you, that's great, honestly.
It's pretty slow, and meandering for no real reason other than forced comedy, and it didn't work for me. The combat is very clunky on controller, which I for some reason decided to put up with before I realised towards the end of the game that mouse and keyboard controls feel much better. This, however, did not help with the overall slow pace of the platforming.
The story is also really weirdly paced, and doesn't ultimately do much in respect to other aspects of the game with the "breaking out of the game" theme its going for. Combine that with the aforementioned slowness of gameplay, cutscenes, and dialogue, and it becomes a slog, even with fast forward enabled.
The ending
wound up being completely anticlimactic, and boring, unless there is a true ending somewhere I missed, but I doubt it, since I went as far as to get all achievements to see if there was anything of note.
One thing I did like, however, was the music. It goes unnecessarily hard. It's not life-changing, but it's quite well produced, and varied, especially in comparison to the rest of the game. I wish it were available for purchase, or streaming.
The gameplay is fine and the story is cute, but my god the cut scenes are horrifically slow, unskippable, and the dialogue feels like it's written by some lolz random millennial stuck in 2007-era internet. There's no real reason to play this, but if you for whatever reason are compelled to do so, I highly recommend getting it when it's on sale. It's not worth the money otherwise
Скучно и лениво.
До выхода игры по скринам казалось что это будет какой то гличкор хорор по типу пони исланд, по итогу простецкий платформер с достаточно унылым сюжетом.
不够meta
Good story driven game i liked it a lot I would highly recommend this game to people who like feeling like they are a part of the world they are playing
I was hyped by the game but i don't really care about Jack or that my name is BANANA. I just want to play and this game is ruined by unskippable cutscenes. Too bad I have to quit because i'm just bored playing this.
Realized a bit too late that I want to refund this. Platforming is fine, but the dialogue is horrificallyslow and locks you into places. You cannot skip dialogue at all.
You better watch this on YouTube, the gameplay is as shallow as can be to advance the story.
The humor is "le random 2010 internet meme humor xd".
i have a plan to *maybe* return to this game in the future.
but for now, i ran into bugs. they were accidental but super easy. screen completely froze when i got to the shop with all the eyes. game was still working in the background but i had to close the game to fix it. i dont know if that was a game problem or just my average laptop, but it was annoying.
next, when i went to meet Jeff i was able to move around for some reason and i fell off the left side. when i spawned in hell, the camera moved back to Jeff and i had to restart the level to get it back. after I exited hell, all the platforms were gone and i infinitely fell. another restart. when i returned to Jeff, his dialogue did not start and i just stood there.
i didnt quit because of the long, boring, unskippable cutscenes. i didnt mind those, contrary to what other players didnt like. i believe this game has likability but im not in the right mindset right now to deal with that. i want to collect all the achievements, but again it is not today.
If youre going into this game thinking it might be a genre-bending no rules out of the box gameplay like i was then you might be a bit dissapointed, as this is just an action-platformer with some really fun weapons.
This game is 70% story and 30% gameplay, which i actually didnt mind since the story although childish was really wacky and goofy and made me laugh multiple times, the gameplay is pretty smooth but quite simple.
Overall. not a must-play but a solid indie game that you can spend ur 2 bucks on! 7/10
110%
awsome!
LMAO - LUV IT!!!!!!!!!
The game is pretty fun for the first playthrough barring some very long cutscenes taking you out of the experience a bit.
Replayability wise, well you can find some extra secrets, though you also need to sit through all of the cutscenes, and even with the dialogue being sped up using a button (check the options, though I recommend you don't skip too much in your first playthrough) sitting around doing nothing while waiting for all the text to scroll by can get a bit boring. (
One achievement does help with some of the waiting however, which sadly was my last achievement so it didn't help too much
)
I do like that you can actually break the game, by using certain weapons and movement tech to get out of bounds, though the game doesn't really acknowledge it, which feels a bit weird.
I played this game in 2019 when it was released. I really hated most parts of the game, but I thought some other parts were okay, and I liked the ending. It’s been almost 5 years since then, and I’m grinding achievements, so I’m going to write this review while playing the game and see if it’s really as bad as I remember it to be.
First launch: CMD opened and showed a few error messages with the lines of the code to fix it, not necessarily what I was hoping for. The introduction is okay, but all those error messages and 'bugs' feel really forced. The unskippable cutscenes with nothing to do are already starting, with me walking around for 4 minutes and waiting for the dialogue to finish. Speaking of the dialogue, it is slightly… giving 2012 vibes by using stuff like ':D' and generally being overenergetic, something which I would not hope to see in a video game but is still alright so far. It is unpredictable what happens next in the plot, which is a plus point in my opinion.
The dialogue keeps getting more 'trying to be funny.' It tries to treat everything like a joke, which really hurts the atmosphere. Not only that, but the dialogue is so meaningless. The main character, Kevin, only gives small-talk responses without actually telling anything about his past or why I am here or what this is.
It keeps on getting worse. There is a guy complaining about a graph and completely stopping gameplay for that, meanwhile the other one is semi-babysitting him. I’ve been playing this game for 25 minutes and I spent at least 18 minutes watching meaningless cutscenes. It still keeps on going as I’m writing this wtf, 3 minutes of my life for watching a guy going crazy over a 'graph'…
The gameplay continued for 10 seconds only to continue with a cutscene. I now did one minute of platforming only to get another cutscene. The cutscene is still going but at least I finally got a little bit of backstory, making two minutes of it actually worth watching.
Kevin just gave me the nickname 'Banana,' further making me question my choices and ruining any sense of atmosphere or tension.
50 minutes in, I’m taking a small break. I spent at least half an hour reading dialogue, forcefully. I usually don’t mind that, but it is all so incredibly irrelevant to the plot. I’ve never seen a game try to be childish funny this much.
They killed a character right now and tried to get an emotional moment, maybe it could have been more effective if they hadn’t done it within the first hour of the game.
Forced cutscenes calmed down and I got to enjoy some gameplay. Some platforming mixed with shooting and slight bullet hell, can be quite enjoyable yet easy. Shows that the game has potential though.
It also closed itself at a good timing, didn’t see it coming tbh.
As soon as I was giving it credit, the game continued with forced useless cutscenes. I honestly think I won’t make it to the end. I’m just gonna do stuff on my phone while I wait for this cutscene to end. It has been five minutes and it is still going wtf. IT STOPPED FINALLY. Nvm it gave me another cutscene, back on my phone. Okay, this seems to be going on for longer than I anticipated, I will just lay on my couch and watch YouTube until I can actually continue playing the game I paid for. Had to wait 10 minutes…
Burp humor got introduced, my mental state is declining. Okay, it’s getting really bad. The cutscenes are getting so incredibly pointless and hurt plot-progression so bad it’s not even funny anymore, not like it was funny to begin with. I waited 15 minutes for a childish cutscene. I am starting to believe this game is made for toddlers. ANOTHER CUTSCENE CAN YOU STOP WTF!? I MOVED FOR 8 SECONDS AND GOT ANOTHER CUTSCENE!? I moved for 30 seconds and yet got another cutscene, please I know it sounds unbelievable but I am not exaggerating. Three-fourths of the game is just like that.
I have a timer, let’s see how long this takes… The funky wall… 5 minutes for an imaginary wall… I have not had any gameplay in the past half hour. I’m losing my mind.
I finally got to the second boss fight, or at least that’s what I thought until I spent another 5 minutes in yet another cutscene. A very uncomfortable one that again completely ruins the atmosphere and makes the boss look like a joke. The boss fight itself was okay, music was cool but the laser beams come out of nowhere. It would’ve been good game design to get a hint that you’re about to be attacked. Also, before he fought you, he said 'This is the part where I kill you,' shamelessly copied from the last act in Portal 2. There are more pop-culture references in this game like Fight Club or Area 51 and it all feels so out of place.
There was a serious cutscene only for a silly one to follow… I get it, I finally get it! It tries to be a childish comedy and serious story game simultaneously, a combination which is doomed to fail. Game is nearly over, I’ll stop mentioning cutscenes at this point.
The ending was neat, just like I remembered it. It really tried to sum it all up and I think it achieved that quite well.
Conclusion: Meh. Should be obvious by now. There is much more that I could talk about but I think I pointed out what really matters. It is sad because this game really had potential. The idea is a good one but the forced childish humor and lack of gameplay completely ruined it.
I cannot believe I paid 8€ for this though…
tl;dr: Great idea, poor execution.
It broke my feelings... In a good way?
slow, boring, like half the game is waiting for the characters to finish talking, the gameplay itself isn't particularly good or bad.
Bought this game years ago and finally finished it. Personally, I really love 2D games telling stories and it reminded me a lot of Pony Island, so I just had to check this game out.
Long story short - not many games manage to make me this emotional. I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed the gameplay and getting 100% achievements is pretty easy.
My only "complaint": some dialogue sequences were a bit dragged out, but other than that, this game was great. Definitely recommend if you're into "dark" 2D games.
Jaunty meta fun!
Due to the total feeling of emptiness and guilt for messing up everything that appears at the end, I'm not sure if I'm ready to directly RECOMMEND this experience to everyone, but to fans of indie and non-standard plots, perhaps (if long, unskipable dialogues and platforming don't put you off).
I've been thinking for a long time about: what to do with it now? - and I've come to the only right decision:
You know what?
KEVIN IS REAL.
And I have a proof here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3219501104
(it will also appear in the "Illustrations" section of the game)
This will be my "happy ending".
Now I really feel like I've BROKEN this game. Now I'm truely satisfied.
An interesting dialog on video games. All the long cutscenes with zero gameplay were kinda annoying and boring though.
세상에.. 주인공들 대화를 듣다가 지치고 지겨워서 끌 줄이야.. 너무 재미없다
I literally hid the game from myself in my library because I hated the ending that much. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hell, dude.
This game is the sequel of Escape the Game, released in 2016 for free by Simon Fredholm. Basically, we continue the adventure of little blue cube Kevin, convinced that it's real, with an unexpected and flabbergasting finale. I find it a weird and peculiar game, maybe you can find some interesting topics in it, themes of a philosophical nature about videogames characters. The way I see it, it's one of the most incredible games I ever played, full of nice plot twists. I wonder if Fredholm will ever make a third chapter, but maybe not...?
Anyway, not bad, a nice game to pass the time.
If you are a fast reader "enable fast forward" in danger zone settings
Writing was entertaining and the gameplay was simple but engaging.
Legitimate, unironic warning. Don't buy or play this game, it genuinely isn't fun.
It's not a fun qwirky short platformer that has steam achievements in the same vein as Please don't touch anything, there is no game, ect (which I would recommend).
This one is just bad.
The game says it wants the player to suffer, and it achieves this.
I'm writing this review after watching my character float into space, which they have been doing for 10. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minutes.
I have spent as much time doing other things in my room, watching my computer monitor to see if I'm allowed to move or play the game than I have actually playing in the past 40 minutes of play. And I've seen there are 5 acts to this game meaning I'm barely past the half way mark and I'm already sick of it.
The plot is boring and makes no sense, even characters that don't exist have main character syndrome. EVERYONE want to talk which is text on screen. No audible dialogue. the plot is boring, makes no sense and is completely disconnected from itself. Characters make dumb choices and have no motivations.
Because I'm a masochist I will endure the remainder of it for the achievements, because I started this, and I'll finish it, but damn, the game makes itself difficult to enjoy.
Also the game is devlishly good at detecting when you've alt tabbed. So when I finish this review and tab back in, i'll just be watching myself float through space and listening to bad music because I can't even alt tab this game to do SOMETHING when the game has forced you into a 10+ minute window where you can't play the damn game
I wasn't going to recommend the game. The game play feels poor, and way too easy most of the time. The story had way too many long cut scenes that just dragged on and on for no reason, which had me begging for a skip button. A lot of the time the way the story beats hit felt like there wasn't any confidence in the creator's writing.
That all changed at the ending. The last moment of the game, the last couple lines of dialog just hit home so hard. I could only give this game a thumbs up after it.
Güzel düşünülmüş bir platform oyunu. Ama o kadar.

slow pacing
the game was fun, it had its clunky controller moments or a lot of unskipable dialogue to go through, but overall I enjoyed it’s meta humor and the ending left me conflicted
Buen juego, mejor persona
I'm sure it's fun for someone, but the opening is just gruelingly slow and unenjoyable.
This isn't funny at all. The dialogue goes on and on and on and makes no sense whatsowever. After almost an hour of playing I still had no clue what the game was about.
But more importanly, the game is utterly broken: I had no sound at all, and my character often moved automatically to the right without any player input (when using an xbox controller).
Probably one of the best games I've ever played. You just have to play it. It's has one of the best storytelling I've ever seen in a game and it demonstrates that you don't need fancy graphics to have fun.
I don't play games to have fun skipping cut scenes
Pese al caos que genera consigue explicar una historia sólida con un humor muy particular. Es muy entretenido.
A fun and interesting platformer. Can you play solid, stories interesting; however, The biggest issue is the cutscenes. I tend to drag on a little longer and the pauses between actions are very long. the most egregious example of this is the loading screen interaction.
still if you enjoy games like Thomas was alone then this is right up your alley.
Edit: Found out about the fast forward option. Doesn't fix it but it helps.
copied from Techbrews review because I am lazy and fully agree.
But the dialogue "cut scenes"... Oh Lord, the cut scenes. So many interruptions. So much loss of momentum. The game has so much potential, but it kept getting ruined by YouTube-Double-Ad-Length exposition. That can't be skipped. Over and over, the game literally stops and you have to watch teletype-style dialog explain what's going on. It gave me heartburn.
I really enjoy the fact that this game has so much focus on breaking the fourth wall, but my hands aren't nimble enough to play it. It's not very accessible for those with mobility issues, otherwise, a good game.
And not just becuse everyone wiill suffer because of your actions
It's cringe AF most of the time and even though the gameplay and plot overall are generally enjoyable, there's just too much unskippable "cutscenes" with tons of cringy dialog here, so try it only if you're really into this kind of things or just not very picky
Good idea, meh execution
but at least it's easy to get 100% achievements
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ :)
Very unique. Immersive. I got a bit confused about reality a couple of times. Loved it a lot.
A weird platformer, where you try to break the game and as you progress into the story 'game mechanics' become wonky.
The dialog and humor are hit or miss (some long sequences or fart jokes) and the gameplay is good (mostly jumping with some puzzles here and there). The story is strange, but interesting at the same time (an escape from the matrix of sorts).
The game is too short! I want more! I thought everything has been done already in terms of old school style video games, but this game is very humorous, creative, and imaginative.
I like ducks.
Nice little meta game that's pretty fun to play through, only criticism for me is that the ending is a bit of a downer, I'll put my thoughts on the ending here in spoiler text so I don't ruin the story for anyone who wants to play.
Long story short the ending basically revealed that the character Kevin is stuck in an infinite loop of trying to break out of the game, I tried looking around on google/youtube to see if there was a 2nd ending but search queries got muddled with Breaking Bad and this other Roblox game that has a similar title so as far as I can tell there isn't one. That imo sucks because I just spent like 5 hours getting attached to Kevin and trying to help him, maybe there is a secret ending in the game but it's not hinted at in the achievements and the only 2 guides at time of writing don't make mention of it either, so in the meantime I guess I'm stuck here with this sad ending :(
Fun little adventure game with some lively characters. Some fun platforming, simple and relaxing worlds, and a nice pace.
Very cool game!
Short and sweet. Story is better than the gameplay
If you're reading this and you've not yet played, stop. You want to go into this, blind. Trust me.
Potential SPOILERS AHEAD:
PROS:
- Break the Game has THE best sound design of any game I've played, period. Every song fits the mood to a T. The enemy sounds, dialog noise, ambient drones... Everything enhances (or, at least contributes to) the emotional story of this game. I have played a LOT of games in my life (see my library + years of unseen console experience), and Break the Game is an audio masterpiece.
The
dark cube enemies
that roll at you
towards the end of the game...
I literally jumped! Who knew a
square
could be so terrifying?! Genuinely, that sound effect sent a bolt of dread through my chest.
- The gameplay is simple, yet charming. It's a platformer at the core, but adds a fun little shooting element. Each gun is different and fun to use, though I will say that the weapon you pick doesn't actually matter too much aside from a specific boss fight
Isak's
.
- The gameplay is also relatively easy, but not too dull. The landscapes are also varied enough to stop it from feeling repetitive.
- The visuals are pleasant and unobtrusive. Good contrast and darker backgrounds make it easy to see for gamers with disabilities like mine.
- The writing is, overall, very charming and memorable! The dev makes a lot of jokes about the game's development, as well as poking fun at various game tropes and programming. If you like that kind of humor, you'll enjoy this. There are also a lot of great fourth wall breaks as well as quirky and distinct characters, despite everything being a basic cube.
- The story is unique very well-crafted.
CONS:
- The longer dialogue sometimes conflicts with the urgency of the story.
For example,
the "funk wall"
joke. At such a critical point in the story, I found myself itching to just get on with the game! Not hear a long joke that felt more like an inside joke between the dev and a few friends. On the other hand, the joke was creative enough that it DID stuck with me and was something I could see myself referencing in the future...? 🤔
So, I don't think the joke, itself, was bad...
Just the timing.
To fix this, I'd suggest an optional "Skip dialogue" button.
- The beginning of the story felt a bit like picking up a book, partway through. The characters spend a fair bit of time explaining why, we, the player, don't know (insert storyline here). This, like the feedback for the joke, above, is a pro and a con. It makes for good replayability, but I could see a lot of people getting confused and/or bored and quitting before the story becomes clear.
Again, I'd recommend an optionail way of skipping ahead, if nothing else than just for people who are playing a second time.
Overall, Break the Game is an amazing emotional experience! It really makes you second-guess who's the real villain. I was regularly having to remind myself that "This was published on Steam for people to play. Somebody programmed this game. Somebody wanted this story to be told."
I have already recommended this game to a friend and will continue to recommend it to anyone else with a Steam library and $11 to spend. The developer is now one who I will follow and purchase games from in the future.
WE NEED CHINESE!!
WE NEED CHINESE!!
WE NEED CHINESE!!
I can't figure this game out even a little. I wanted to enjoy such a weird looking game but.... Im lost.
I went into the game with positive expectations. It seemed like the type of game I would really enjoy. In short: I really didn't.
The game tries really hard to both be funny and to be taken seriously. That went as well as you could imagine.
For one, I didn't find the game funny at all, but humour is subjective, so I guess I'll let that slide. If you are into fart-jokes, this game is for you.
What is worse is that, for trying to be serious, it really makes too little sense. Like characters knowing there is something bad going on somewhere, and tell you to get there as fast as possible... but then they specifically take the long route, even mentioning that they are doing it for no good reason, and then standing still, talking about how they have to do something instead of just doing it. And that is the entire game.
The worst part however is how this game is just dragging on. My god is this game boring and slow. There is a fast-forward button at least, but even then it is super slow. Characters keep talking about a ton of irrelevant stuff. But hey, inside the game it is mentioned how the creator of the game just wants you, the player, to suffer. That they certainly achieved. Good job. A little tip from my end for the future: In storytelling, it is a good rule of thumb to only mention things that are relevant in some way. That can be parts of the story, or things that explain why characters act in certain ways etc. Setups for jokes can also be fine. But this game has a lot of unnecessary filler.
The game also has a few bugs. I did not run into a lot, but most of them were pretty game-breaking (kinda ironic). At one point it was supposed to freeze you to play out a cutscene, but instead i could move and actually kill an actor that was part of the cutscene, breaking the cutscene and forcing me to reset. In another portion it transforms you into something for a bit, taking all your weapons. it is supposed to give you a basic weapon, telling you that you can shoot... but you can't actually shoot until you get the next weapon.
This game is awesome. The dialogs and the music is great. The gameplay is also really fun.
Underwhelming. Gameplay is shoot and move. Lore never truly explained and ending doesn't makes me feel like game ended. Every character talks like teenager on online chat messing with friends, now it's not that bad but looks bad when everyone talks in same personality. Graphics are good thanks to lighting and effects(?) but shouldn't have used only cubes to make terrains, it makes it look more cheap. should have tried action platformer, you already have fine movement with dash and double jump, could also use that lightgun and give us a dark levels to make use of lighting mechanic and swapgun instead of giving it to us at the almost end of game, the only threats shooting at you with a snail pace
I play this game 24/7 I know every single ending by heart, I play this game so much that all my friends and family needed to plan an intervention. (That didn't help). I am addicted to this game and all the game features. If you asked me my hobbies this would be the only thing I would say. The circle guy (the main character) is the cutest little triangle ever, and don't get me started on his octagon girlfriend, she is so adorable. 10/10 recommend this game for people who want their friends and family to leave them.
I haven't played much of it yet, but so far the pacing is terrible. constant, unskippable cutscenes, with dialog that drags on and on
