I absolutely love the atmosphere and overall design of Axiom Verge. If it had come out a bit later, its visuals would’ve fit perfectly into the era of modern ARG-style or analog horror aesthetics. It’s basically a perfect retro metroidvania in every aspect, clearly inspired by Metroid and Giger’s work, but still managing to feel unique and tell its own dark, unsettling story.
The visual style, music, and overall atmosphere are just incredible. Everything blends together into this oppressive, immersive vibe that really sticks with you. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting here, and paired with the art direction it gives the whole game a very distinct identity.
From a gameplay perspective, it feels really solid. Controls are responsive, movement and combat are smooth, and overall it just feels good to play. The game is well balanced too, it keeps a hardcore feel from start to finish. Early on you’re weak and limited, enemies are simpler, but by the end you’ve got a huge arsenal and more tools, and the enemies scale up in both difficulty and numbers, so the challenge never really drops off.
Exploration is easily one of the strongest parts. There are tons of well-hidden secrets and power-ups scattered across the map. Some of them are hidden a bit too well and require some real moon logic, but it still feels great whenever you manage to find something. The map marker system helps a lot with that, even if it’s a bit limited since you can only place two markers at a time. The password system is also a bit confusing at first, but once you understand it, it actually adds another layer to exploration and secret hunting.
The weapon variety is nice, and unlocking new tools over time feels rewarding, but not all of them stand out. Quite a few feel like duplicates, basically the same weapon but slightly better. It probably would’ve worked better as a more straightforward upgrade system, or if you had more control over what goes into your active weapon wheel versus staying in inventory.
The story is surprisingly engaging. It starts off pretty generic, like a typical “guy gets pulled into another world” setup, and there are a few awkward or even silly moments along the way, but overall it’s told in a way that feels interesting and not as cliché as it first seems. It’s also nice that some of your actions during the story actually affect the world around you, which makes things feel a bit more alive.
There are a few downsides though. Some bosses can be cheesed pretty easily if you find a position where they just can’t hit you, which kind of breaks the challenge. The dash mechanic is the weakest part of the controls, it’s tied to double-tapping a direction, which feels awkward. Sometimes you trigger it accidentally, and other times it just doesn’t come out when you need it, which is especially frustrating during more precise platforming sections.
It’s also a bit disappointing that the game doesn’t give you a choice at the end. The main antagonist actually has some solid arguments, and it would’ve been interesting to decide whether to join them or fight. But it’s pretty clear the developers wanted to keep that big final boss battle, and to be fair, it’s very epic.
The built-in randomizer is a really nice bonus feature as well.
Overall, Axiom Verge is a very solid and high-quality metroidvania. It nails atmosphere, exploration, and that classic feel, even if a few design choices keep it from being truly perfect.

I would love to be able to review this game in a vacuum. It would be very convenient for Axiom Verge if I had never played Super Metroid, or watched Alien, or viewed any of H.R. Giger’s paintings. But Axiom Verge is such a blatant, self-conscious reworking of its inspirations that even despite a few neat innovations, it is constantly inviting unflattering comparisons, particularly to Super Metroid, which I’ll focus on here.

Super Metroid’s movement is floaty and momentum-based, requiring a commitment to each jump, with less room for midair correction. Samus’ controls are clunky and unintuitive at first, but fluid and rewarding to master. The game contains a short opening and closing cutscene, but otherwise, its story is told exclusively through environment, creating a strong sense of mystery. Its alien world is claustrophobic and disorienting, its atmosphere lonely and isolating, at times even horrifying. Its soundtrack consists of biomechanical beeps and blorps, ritual drumbeats, and contemplative empty space. The in-game map is often unclear and unreadable, with minimal information displayed.

By contrast, Axiom Verge presents a protagonist with quick and snappy movement, every maneuver cancelable and correctable. Its controls are designed to be easily picked up and understood. The mysterious, Giger-inspired pixel art setpieces are frequently interrupted with expositional dialogue, helping players to understand the whole story of everything they see. Its world is visually weird, but effortlessly navigated. Its soundtrack is primarily upbeat, pulsing synthpop. The in-game map tells you everything you might want to know: where every door is, where every room contains a secret path, what percentage of the world has been explored.

Alien and Super Metroid each elicit discomfort in order to produce a great sense of reward when that discomfort is endured and eventually overcome. And even in the relief of their conclusions, their worlds are never fully understood. Axiom Verge co-opts the superficial qualities of these predecessors and remixes them into an experience that is nothing but comfortable. Axiom Verge never surprises you, never lets you ask questions, and never lets you be truly lost. It's an oppressive alien world with a high quality of life.

I really, really, really wanted to like this game.

The beginning levels were fun, the music was cool, the art style and visuals are amazing, and the story is interesting. It was nice to just explore and enjoy the scenery. I loved the first few levels of the game.

But in later levels, it just started to come apart.

The controls for some of the tools are just too janky to make playing the game fun, and served to frustrate me instead. The teleporting cloak II is way too sensitive and made me die or miss items on multiple occasion - causing me to do an entire loop around one specific level three different times. The grapple hook doesn't have any momentum and is awkward to use effectively.

And as much as I love the art style, there are too many paths that you need to progress the plot forward that are hard to see/differentiate between an breakable block and an a regular wall.

At some point I realized I wasn't having fun with the game anymore and had to stop. But I wanted to love this game D':

Have you ever played a game that is brilliant in concept, but lackluster in its execution? Have you ever played a game that isn't even fundamentally flawed, but consistently does so many things wrong? Have you ever played Axiom Verge? Because that's how I'd describe Axiom Verge.

The game constantly wears its Metroid influence on its sleeve, so you know what that means? It oozes atmosphere, which is easily its biggest strength. The spritework is phenomenal, the music is perfect, and it actually has a pretty solid narrative that only further enhances how weird the world is. All of this done by one developer too? Pretty impressive.

But everything else was just not great... Movement upgrades are incredibly scarce and feel janky to use. Enemies are a pain in the ass to deal with and are, quite frankly, some of the worst I have seen in the metroidvania genre. You'll walk into a boss room, see the coolest alien design you've ever seen, and then quickly realize that the entire fight is either monotonous or just completely awful. I also really appreciated being given 1 billion weapon options and then only actively using 3 of them because almost all of them suck.

My biggest complaint: why is there no fast travel? I understand that Super Metroid was a big influence, but you know what that game has that this one doesn't? Speed. If you're going to make the player character walk through molasses for 90% of the game, the least you could do is incorporate some fast travel. I don't feel motivated to explore when I know that journeying in any direction is going to take forever.

Overall, I found Axiom Verge to be a middling game that had the potential to be great, but dropped the ball in so many areas. I'm happy I played it, but I don't think I'll be returning any time soon.

Quite possibly the strongest 2D indie metroid-like. The soundtrack, visuals and worldbuilding are all stellar. It is quite hard though, if you're not a die hard metroid fan, you might sweat a little.

AV2 is also extremely interesting, both in its connection and differences from the original.

Unbelievable that this game was made by one guy! It really nails and elevates the look, feel and atmosphere of the original NES Metroid, without being a clone or copying (most of) its flaws. In fact, the game surprised me again and again with unique mechanics where you'd expect genre standards. Instead of bombs, you get a handy drill for opening up walls, which is quite satisfying to use and can be used in combat as well. Instead of a morph ball, you get this neat little drone that you remote control. Where you'd expect a double jump... well, you get the idea. I don't want to spoiler too much.

Other than that, it's a solid Metroidvania and fans will feel right at home. The controls are tight, combat feels precise and has that retro oomph! when you blow things up. Enemies look and move like you'd expect from a Metroid game. The art style is similar in a way that the whole game world is made out of cube-shaped tiles, but doesn't just blatantly copy from Giger and Alien.

What really deserves a special mention is the soundtrack. It's amazing! I got from an interview with the developer Thomas Happ, that he had no experience in making music whatsoever before working on this game. This is mindblowing, as it really sounds like a whole team of professional musicians were behind it. Really impressive!

Axiom Verge has a couple of flaws, too, but most of them are minor an won't spoil the overall experience too much.... most of them...

The visual design of the different sectors makes it hard to navigate sometimes. Was it the green blocks with the blue background? Or was it the blue blocks with the green background? I can imagine what a Crateria or Maridia is, but wth is a "Kur" or "Zi"? Thankfully, the soundtrack has more variety and makes it easier to distinguish the areas. If you got lost in Super Metroid, you will get super lost in Axiom Verge! There is a map, but you can only place 2 markers in a sector at the same time, which isn't nearly enough to mark all the spots you want to backtrack to. Getting 100% is pretty annoying in this game, as there's no real way to fast travel either.

And while the progression items like said drone are unique, they open almost too many possibilities for exploration. With the Metroid series, it's common practice to bomb all the walls for secrets. Maybe not the best design to begin with, but there are limits where it clearly doesn't make sense to even check. In this game, hidden items CAN and WILL be everywhere! No tile is safe! Example: You may have checked a tile before with the drill, but now you have the drone and with it the ability to access tiles which are only a single block high... and of course, those can be illusory... so even if you checked that block before with the drill, you still have to bump into it with the drone to find out if it's fake or not, because your character is too tall to do that. Great, now I have to check all the nooks and corners, not once, but effectively twice! There's also no power bomb or X-Ray revealing all the destructible blocks in a room, making it even more tedious! So with all that combined, I just gave up on getting 100%. It's neither fun nor worth the time.

The game has a ton of weapons you can find and they all work differently. But what feels rewarding at first will slowly fade into disappointment the more you find, as most of them are very situational or straight up suck. And by the end of the game, I had so many weapons that it became kinda hard to select them precisely from the weapon wheel. I often needed more than one try to select the weapon I wanted. Unfortunately, you don't have an inventory where you can store the weapons you don't need, the game just clogs the weapon wheel as soon as you pick them up.

Then there's the grappling hook. I hated that thing with a passion! I'm not even sure if I figured it out correctly, but it feels like it just disconnects if you don't swing in a specific rhythm. It's really the worst grappling hook I've ever seen in a game. And the best thing: just when you got used to it, the game gives you another traversal tool and you will never use it again. You really only need it for like 1 sector or so. It almost feels like Happ became aware how bad it turned out during development and then just gave up on it.

What disappointed me the most, however, was the bosses. Most of them have very basic patterns, always do the same 2 or 3 things and if they have a second phase, it's the same but sped up. It's also irrelevant if you play well or not. As long as you've found enough upgrades, you can more or less brute force most of them. I feel like that is where the game maybe tries to be too much like the original, when other Metroidvanias and even the Metroid series itself have long moved on from this kind of archaic design. The final boss was particularly disappointing. I beat him first try and all it took was spamming the same move over and over again while jumping in place. I really thought there would be another boss after that, but nope. Also, the boss theme doesn't fit at all. While the rest of the soundtrack is often dark, trippy and unsettling, here it suddenly gets all upbeat and happy. The track isn't totally annoying, it just doesn't fit and makes the boss fights even more forgettable.

But that's really all I have to cirtizice. If you're a Metroid fan, this is a must play!

Axiom Verge is my favorite game I played so far this year. The amount of weapons you can discover alongside with the unique abilities you unlock is very great. I loved using the flamethrower and the gun that shot thin green lines everywhere. I love the pixel art style and the game has great boss designs. One complaint I would say is that the boss fights, specifically towards the later half of the game are not very engaging for me. For example for the final boss all you have to is spam upward dash while holding down attack to beat him and the second to last boss just felt like I was face tanking him till I actually killed him. Anyway the bosses aren’t the main focus of this game and everything else is great

Enrolei bastante porque achei que parecia um metroidvania genérico (nesse caso, mais Metroid do que Vania), mas acabei gostando bem mais do que esperava - até a lore é interessante.

Dito isso, que péssima ideia colocar o dash como double tap no botão de movimento! Toda hora eu caía por ativar o dash sem querer. Espero que o 2 tenha um botão exclusivo pra ele.

I enjoyed this metroidvania game for its gameplay and story. The more sophisticated weapons in the game made for some interesting learning curves and the upgrades to your character made exploration and manners of evasion during battle immensely fun. Finally, the story felt neither terribly complex nor straightforward, leaving the player to suss out what has caused the state of the world that the main character has been thrust into. I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a nice, fun sci-fi metroidvania game that has elements of an alien horror game and a platformer game through ancient alien cultural landmarks littered with lore drops at their furthest reaches, all tied together by a story both suspenseful and impactful.

I'm a little bit more than halfway through and I'm calling it quits. By no means a bad game and I don't regret the time I've put into it, but it's starting to overstay its welcome.

This is a very original Metroidvania if you're used to modern entries to the genre where the gameplay is largely derived from Hollow Knight. It primarily sets itself apart by its weapons (multiple primary weapons with very different bullet patterns, so it rewards tactical placement and mid-fight weapon switching) and its traversal tools.
You don't get a double jump, wall jump or dash; instead you get a remote controlled drone, a glitch gun, an awkward grappling hook and an even more awkward short range teleportation dash.
While these traversal tools feel fresh, they're not really making you feel more powerful or even make movement smoother and faster - instead they simply enable you to reach places you couldn't reach before. In a way they make playing the game more cumbersome, because they're so awkward to use. For example, the teleportation dash is triggered by pressing the d-pad twice in the chosen direction. You usually want to use it while moving, and you're moving with the - you guessed it - d-pad. Feels very bad to use. It also comes out involuntarily while doding enemies.

Biomes are quite samey and enemy design steadily becomes more and more attrition-based.

Bosses are fun! They're not too hard, but you may have to try some a couple of times until you've got the hang of it. They're by no means as frustrating as bosses in modern Metroidvanias can be, which is a plus.

I'm conflicted on whether this game deserves a thumbs up or down. As I ultimately don't want to finish it and wouldn't particularly recommend it to anyone I'm leaning towards a thumbs down. It was very fun for a few hours though. Good music, too.

It was a 6/10 so ill leave a positive but some stuff really iritated me about this game. Wish i could leave a neutral review.

The worst part is (Spoilers) the dumbest decision to not give "dodge" a dedicated key bind. Almost made me put the game down. It is binded to double tapping in a direction which often leads to accidentally throwing yourself off ledges. No way to change this.

Bosses were lame in my opinion. Most were easy. Only 2 that gave me any trouble but not even in a fun way, just bullet spam. Last boss sucked.

Only thing i really liked about the game is the exploration and the story. The story was interesting enough to make me finish the game.

If the dodge mechanic sounds bad i recommend passing on this game.

The level design is too bland and similar. You'll find yourself meandering through areas with no clear idea of where to go, leaving unexplored areas behind. It feels procedurally generated rather than crafted with intent. Traversing the map feels like wading through spaghetti bolognese.

Metroidvania muy entretenido que recuerda y rinde homenaje a Super Metroid de SNES (si este último título te gusta, entonces no dudes en probar Axiom Verge). Las mecánicas de juego son interesantes y muy innovadoras, lo que vuelve emocionante la experiencia de explorar Sudra y descubrir sus muchos secretos. La música, por otro lado, es uno de los aspectos que más destaco del juego, vuelven la experiencia mucho más inmersiva, dotanto de vida los pasajes de este desolado planeta y entregándole una vibra única a cada "bioma". Es increíble cómo se te queda grabada en el oído. Aunque la historia sea una tremenda poronga, si no le pones mucha atención y te dedicas a jugar, encontrarás un muy buen juego que recuerda las glorias pasadas del SNES y las trae de vuelta a la actualidad con un buen lavado de cara y una experiencia grata y nostálgica.

It's an indie (made by one person) retro game HEAVILY inspired by the NES Super Metroid in practically all its aspects, the story, world-building, gameplay, art direction and so on, so it’s really important to keep in mind that it has that characteristic slower pace and clunkiness of old platformers and really relies on the Metroid side of the Metroidvania genre.

In that aspect, Axiom Verge is not dynamic like modern entries in the genre, and it can easily become a burden to some. There is no fast-travel (besides a big area that works as a bridge to connect all main areas), the map is labyrinth-like and there is no hand-holding at all, and all that gives the gameplay that old-school retro feeling, so for a modern point of view, accustomed to more dynamic, digestible and fast-paced Metroidvanias, they can have a big problem to grow a liking of this gameplay’s slow pacing and overall lack of hand-holding. The bosses were OK, they were not hard and some were quite cheap, clunky and simplistic with the way you were supposed to approach their fights. There is a wide variety of weapons, but I believe they’re not well-balanced, since most are only good for really specific combat scenarios and you might end up using at least 2 or 3 main weapons throughout the game. It has a fair share of items and special abilities that you discover as you explore, with some changing the way you approach movement and exploring the game. Lastly, I think the hidden secrets present throughout the different areas are a mixed bag of good and bad, some are quite harsh and unfair with no major hints or signs that make the secrets solvable, while others ask for a different approach with the evolving gameplay core mechanics.

The story is fine, it has a decent sci-fi vibe and writing to it with some plot twists and an unveiling mystery, but I think it lacks a good and impactful presentation.

The graphics and art direction are almost a reimagination of the classic NES Super Metroid but more polished, detailed and with a background. I really enjoyed the designs of the war machines and the whole cybernetic mixed with a horror-like style.

So, I recommend this game for those who are going to enjoy the retro and nostalgic feeling that the game brings, or for players who are open to acquiring the taste for a more classic, retro and pure Metroid-like experience (without playing the actual Metroid).

Axiom Verge es un metroidvania clásico, con una estética retro y una profunda e interesante historia de ciencia ficción. Nos encontramos en un laboratorio de Nuevo México, año 2005. El profesor Trace Eschenbrenner se encuentra absorto en medio de un complejo experimento, cuando de pronto, una explosión hace colapsar el edificio, dejándole gravemente herido. Trace despierta en otro lugar, sorprendentemente ileso y desconcertado. Al parecer ha sido trasladado a otro mundo, Sudra, una tierra devastada por un patógeno, ruinas de una antigua civilización. Elsenova, una de las Antiguas Máquinas deificadas por los sudranos, es la responsable de que estemos aquí, pues al parecer hemos sido bendecidos con un don de nacimiento que nos convierte en la última esperanza para acabar con la grave amenaza que asola este mundo. Sin muchas más opciones, nos veremos obligados a aventurarnos en los confines de Sudra en busca de respuestas, revelando el origen de los Rusalki, la Brecha y el todo poderoso Athetos.

Como buen metroidvania, Axiom Verge consiste en un juego de aventuras, acción y plataformas, donde tendremos que explorar un enorme mapa dividido en diversas regiones, combatir contra peligrosas criaturas y adquirir un sinfín de mejoras y armamento para hacernos más poderosos. Este último punto es, sin duda, la mejor baza de Axiom Verge: una gran variedad de habilidades y de armas que le hacen sobresalir en el género, ofreciéndonos múltiples mecánicas que se trasladarán al movimiento y combate del protagonista. Podremos desbloquear distintos niveles de dash, un gancho para colgarnos, controlar un dron de combate o glitchear a los enemigos con ondas electromagnéticas. Lejos de proponer habilidades inútiles e innecesarias, todas estas tendrán su utilidad y serán necesarias para alcanzar las diferentes regiones de Sudra, así como para descubrir los múltiples secretos que esconde. Contaremos con un gran arsenal, compuesto por más de 20 armas, cada una con un estilo de disparo y habilidades únicas, que podremos intercambiar según nuestras necesidades. La historia se irá revelando a través de eventos, conversaciones con personajes y diferentes documentos escritos, algunos de los cuales tendremos que traducir mediante códigos secretos. Además de la campaña normal, dispondremos de un modo “speedrun” con un cronómetro y un modo “randomizer” que altera la localización de ciertos ítems clave en la aventura.

A pesar de mi devoción por el género metroidvania, reconozco que Axiom Verge es un juego que me ha generado una sensación constante de amor-odio por varias razones. La historia es interesante, profunda y bien desarrollada a través de diversas fuentes, sumado a un completísimo repertorio de habilidades que hacen que la experiencia sea muy gratificante, muchos secretos que descubrir, armamento variado y diferentes combates contra jefes. El problema es la jugabilidad, ya que se siente algo incómoda y robótica, con unos controles poco agradecidos, al menos jugando con mando. Por ejemplo, para dashear (impulsarnos en el aire) hay que mover 2 veces el jostick en la dirección deseada, cortando el ritmo del movimiento salvo que tengas gatillos en lugar de pulgares; el uso del gancho es muy poco fluido y fiable; al recibir daño seremos empujados hacia atrás, lo que provoca que muchas veces caigamos de gran altura y tengamos que repetir tediosas secuencias de plataformas; el jostick derecho no sirve para apuntar, sino para cambiar de arma y así un largo etcétera. En definitiva, creo que es un gran metroidvania, complejo y entretenido, especialmente si te agrada el estilo retro, pero la incomodidad de sus controles, a mí personalmente, me ha empañado un poco la experiencia.

My expectations were much higher, i'd say its very much an acquired taste. While this game has some minor advantages, such as interesting weapon mechanics and secrets, but even though the weapons are different, you dont want to try new ones, the bosses are boring, the locations look disgusting sometimes and the problem is not in the pixel art, the game becomes boring very quickly and I finished it only because of an interesting anime that I was watching at the same time and the biggest drawback is that the crappy controls make it hard to get started. The game itself doesnt offer anything special or above average in terms of story or gameplay, which I consider important in Metroidvanias, as theyre usually very similar and that can dramatically impact their rating In conclusion i recommend this game to Metroidvania fans, so you can see for yourself how you like it, but for casual players i'd recommend just playing any other Metroidvania

Шикарная игра. Прошёл на Steam Deck с превеликим удовольствием. Единственное, изменил кнопку выстрела и включил ей режим турбо. Смотрю, люди жалуются на управление. Видимо, позабыли времена 8-bit. Подвела музыка, ближе к концу не выдержал и отключил её вовсе. А в остальном это эталонный платформер.

It's... Decent.

They're definitely better (not to mention cheaper) Metroidvanias out there, but this one is a good time. The boatload of weapons you get to play around with is easily the highlight for me. A lot of rooms and environments look VERY similar which makes it difficult to navigate compared to something like Super Metroid or Cave Story. Worth getting during a sale though.

Axiom Verge's atmosphere and music carry much of the game’s weight, giving each zone a distinct identity and making it a pleasure to circle back through the labyrinthine world. Combat is quick and athletic, keeping encounters engaging without ever overstaying their welcome. Some weapons are clearly stronger than others, but it was always fun to experiment with new ones against awkwardly placed enemies. Backtracking is a joy rather than a chore, allowing the world to feel lived-in and immersive.

What impressed me the most is how well the game recreates the feeling of playing the original Metroid (NES) for the first time. It's not the literal experince, which would feel dated, but the nostalgic memory of it!

Encore, un autre jeu que je trouve très original et qui devrait même figurer dans l’esprit des jeux cultes de Nintendo. Je m’explique…

• Les bosses paraissent tout le temps impossibles à battre, jusqu’au moment où tu trouves leurs points faibles.
• Les larbins ne peuvent pas être anéantis par la méthode facile de type «hack and slash», tu dois trouver la bonne parade d’exécutions appropriées pour chaque ennemie.
• Les casse-têtes sont très bien réfléchis; parfois ils sont faciles et d'autre fois ils sont très difficiles. Ils demandent une bonne dextérité de la manette de jeu tout en utilisant les bonnes compétences acquises pendant l’aventure.
• Les passages secrets seront très utiles durant votre aventure pour améliorer vos compétences et raccourcir vos chemins.

Peu importe le prix à payer, je conseille ce jeu. Et pour ma part, il mérite d’être noté dans la catégorie «d’extrêmement positif».

Overall Rating: 7.5/10

Axiom Verge is a respectable entry to the Metroidvania genre, feeling
close to the vibe of some of the older 2D Metroid games. Overall, it does many things right,
creates an intriguing atmosphere through it's soundtrack, artstyle and story,
but does have some rough edges along the way.

Pro's:
- simple but catchy soundtrack that definitely adds to the vibe
- awesome pixelart at times, especially regarding backdrops and certain characters
- uniqe set of gadgets to use
- variety of weapons that allow different approaches to any situation
- interesting story to keep you motivated
- many things to discover off the beaten path

Neutral:

- This is a metroidvania thing, so it depends on how you react to it personally,
but I did get lost ~3 times along the way, not knowing where to go next to progress the story.
There are no "quest-markers" and no reminders, which makes discovering something feel
more rewarding, but also causes you to backtrack aimlessly quite a bit every now and then.
Thankfully the map shows quite nicely where there are still unexplored areas, and you'll most likely find some optional upgrades along the way.

Con's:
- Some enemies and bosses feel like it is impossible to avoid damage,
so straight-up trying to kill them before your health runs out is probably your best bet.
I'd like to be able to gain an advantage through my movement, possibly even
beating bosses without loosing health, but I honestly don't feel it's possible for some of the bosses.
Some enemies jump-attack you out of nowhere without indicators to their hiding-spots. (at least on your first try)

Other enemies tend to slow you down - laser crawlers and steam/sand creatures. Either you wait for them to pass, which tends to be annoying especially when backtracking, or you'll have to accept some damage trying to force past them.

- Finding a health upgrade-piece just to need ~4 more of the same to actually gain any effects is not a fun mechanic in my oppinion. It just spreads out the process and feels unsatisfying.

- There are some secret levels that are apparently procedurally generated. While this could be a nice idea to add to the replayability of the game, these levels felt kind of off. They were mostly a mixture of existing rooms, just with very glitchy visuals. These levels sometimes looked so broken, I couldn't even figure out which tiles you can walk on, or which tiles do damage to you. Also, once, I couldn't even exit the secret level and had to quit to the main menu to get out. That should really not happen in a game.

- there is a dash mechanic that works by pressing the trigger into the desired direction twice.
On my XBox Wireless controller, that was kind of hard to do, especially when dashing diagonally.
On the other hand I would often dash when I did not intend to.

So yeah, some rough edges here and there, but If you like the genre and are ok with some hickups,
I would still recommend this game as it had entertained me well for about 11hours.

It took me a couple of years to finish this game, because when I played it the first time I stopped just before the final boss for some reason lol, but today Im victorious, and I wanna point the main things i noticed during two playthroughs:

+ OST, melancholic and tense
+ Tight controls, especially when you get more tools and almost fly through levels
+ Amount of backtracking is just right
+ Variety of weapons (have to look for some of them tho)
+ Visuals are distinct and look good most of the time (except some areas where my eyes were bleeding from colour combinations, hello lost izalith)
+ Thanks for bringing me back to my childhood, metroid my beloved

- Not a big deal, you still can finish the game, but some items are VERY hard to find even if you try to check every nook and cranny

When I first looked at Axiom Verge, I was expecting an experience similar to Metroid and Super Metroid, but what I got instead, was a massive headache of frustrating game level, enemy and boss design.

I've played many games with awful bosses in the past that were absolutely horrible, but at the very least there could be at least a few bosses worth fighting on it. Unfortunately I didn't find any single good boss on this game.

I was expecting to play a metroidvania, but what I got instead, was a bullet hell of annoyances.

I played this game in one sitting on normal difficulty, and already early on I was already feeling like this experience would be annoying.

There is little hints on where to go, you have the classic metroidvania map, but there is no indicator of anything in the game. It's not like I absolutely need the game to let me know where to go, but the way this game was designed, is meant to be backtracked a LOT, and sure, you usually tend to backtrack on Metroidvanias, but this game amps it to an eleven. You reach a new area that you only traverse for 15 minutes to get something that you have to use on a place 2 maps ago, to find something you need on the very area that you were previously, all leading to another area far away.

This is a very disjointed map design, and unfortunately, most of this backtracking hell happens to be on a map that has the most annoying music ever, whoever decided that adding a very ominous native sounding woman doing screeches on the background in the most repetitive fashion, needs to learn a thing or two about music design, because for a metroidvania, soundtrack makes ambiance, and ambiance makes the experience, if both the experience and the music completely demolish each other, well, you end with an attempt.

Outside that track, most of the soundtrack is fine, with a personal favorite that is similar to Red Soil Brinstar from Super Metroid, and the boss theme, which is probably the only good thing going for the bosses.

As for the bosses themselves... they're bad, really quite terrible. Some of them are big, some of them are small, but they all have something in common, they will have a hard to hit weakpoint, meanwhile you're facing with a bullet hell. The second boss I faced, could be defined as either hell or a joke, why a joke? well, if you happen to be able to slip past behind it, you can cheese the boss, which is what I ultimately did (which was probably not intended) but fighting this boss the legit way, is just infuriating to say the least, and unfortunately, this pretty much set the tone for the rest of the bosses which worked similarly.

In games like Metroid, usually the bosses are gimmicks for the abbilities you're about to obtain, this vital game design was missing on this game, as bosses did not represent the ability that you were about to obtain, not like this is a bad thing, but at least that made the bosses memorable to some extent. Since the bosses don't stand out in particular, because they only know how to spam attacks and be a literal bullet hell, this only contributed towards my frustration and qualms against the game design.

Enemy placement and enemy attacks were, for the most part, okay for up to 2/4 of the game. On the 3rd quarter of the game, enemies start being way more annoying, either being fast, or placed in a way where you will always get hit no matter what, or enemies that you can kill but will drain your health, this only became more aggravating during endgame, because enemies on endgame are absolutely dreadful, they chase you, they turn normal mob fights into bullet hells, they deal a lot of damage, and they're absolutely awful to fight, I found myself attempting to avoid them, which works in some sections, but this one last section where I had to go towards the room of the final boss, was excruciatingly annoying that I was almost on the verge of uninstalling and quitting. Usually, you'll have a save point right behind a boss, not here, you'll have to fight your way through several annoying enemies that are just a pain to deal with and are overall not worth fighting, but that you have to kill anyway, because if you try to skip them, eventually, you'll just mass them up for a 3 v 1 fight which is not something you want.

I was half expecting the final boss fight to be at least worth it, but that was not the case, the game spawns and keeps spawning, up to 3 big laser eyes that moves in every direction, and you have to hit something on the ceiling, the issue is that these big laser eyes spam attacks and keep moving in your direction. The only reason to klill these eyes is that they (sometimes) spawn heals on the field for you to survive hell, which was my go through, kill a bunch of them to have enough heals to spam a laser upwards. There is no smart way to push through bosses, you just throw what you have expecting to land and survive long enough for it to be defeated, this is not good boss design in the slightest, it's extremely frustrating. I hated it on Hollow Knight, and I hated it here. Metroidvanis aren't meant to be bullet hells.

I admit there are cool things on the game, like having a glitch gun that you can use to access secrets, or to make enemies have a different function (like revealing paths and being solid objets) unfortunately, the little bit of good things are extremely overshadowed by the terrible things this game excels at.

I also almost forgot to mention that a certain ability that you'll use a lot during late game, happens to be tied to the directional pad, which would constantly fumble me towards more frustration... It also never works the way I want it to, >:(

brb, I need to listen to something else, otherwise the track I mentioned above will completely drive me crazy.

I have some experience with video games. I grew up with the Sears Sports Center (APF TV Fun Pong Console), the Coin Arcades, Mattel Intellivision, ColecoVision, Atari, Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System (with R.O.B. and Zapper), Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx 16 and the PSP 1000. I've played Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Dig-Dug, Mr Do's Castle, Zaxxon, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Bonk's Adventure. It was a great time to be alive!

Seriously, don't let this one slip by. It is what a video game should be: Just pure fun.

the best love letter metroid could hope for. great game.

i made a point to finish it within a few days because id have no chance of picking it back up and knowing what to do after its left my short-term memory. when i was lost, it was pretty painful. great when you're not lost. there are sections that get a little questionably difficult if you arent scouring every area for upgrades.

Axiom Verge is a frustrating attempt at MetroidVania greatness, but at least the soundtrack absolutely slaps. The game is packed with upgrades that feel meh rather than meaningful, and its core progression often feels hollow. Traversal is clunky, combat is repetitive, and most of the many beam types lack impact or utility. The world design struggles to inspire exploration, and gimmicky mechanics like split health pickups and lore dumps do little to help. Still, for all its missteps, the soundtrack is phenomenal, atmospheric, eerie, and easily the best part of the experience. Sadly, great music can only carry a game so far.

One of the best metroidvanias on steam. I don't have much negative to say about it, other than you have to do a bunch of wall checking for secrets and traversal can be a bit of a chore at times. The story is rather odd, but I liked it.

This game really feels like someone who loves metroidvanias tried to make their own take on it, and it really worked out well!

Прежде вего подкупил именно мир здешний и окружение, выполненное в мрачных тонах, отдаленно напоминающий миры Гигера. Особенно, дизайн боссов.
Очень много оружия на разный подход, как и противников. Но под конец меня лично уже начала утомлять.

Axiom Verge excells at bringing face paced combat with the classic metroidvania movement and progression. The lore is interesting, dialogues are intriguing and the pixel art is so well done that it can be used as an exemple of pallet mixing. The enemies are interesting and diverse, the bosses are amazing well done.

Some cons: The game at the hard difficulty is extremely difficult at some points, enemies and bosses feels like bullet sponges and turn the combats more frustrating than harder. [spoiler] The wasp boss is an exemple of this, the movement is hard and the game stop feeling like a metroidvania and becomes a bullet hell for no reason at all. [/spoiler]

Overall a must have at any metroidvania enthusiast.

This game is atrocious. Everyone who advertised this as a suitable substitute for Metroid deserves some amount of prison time. Every aspect that makes Metroidvanias fun just flat out sucks here.

The game commits the biggest sin a Metroidvania could commit: making you feel like you're never making any meaningful progress. None of the core upgrades in this game feel substantial. Aside from getting collectibles, most of the core upgrades exist solely to overcome a single roadblock on the map. Several of the health and power pick-ups are split into multiple pieces you need to collect 5 or 6 of before you're allowed to feel the effects of your effort, which is a baffling decision. And worst of all, there are 28 ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lore pages that surprise you just when you think you're about to get something actually useful.

The combat in this game sucks. Gunning down enemies never feels satisfying, only repetitive. Almost none of the 20 beam types feel good to use, and with the exception of a handful, the functional difference between them is negligible.

The level design of the world isn't great, and it's made worse by the fact that traversal is neither fun nor fast-paced. The controls for the teleportation upgrades are clunky, and the grapple is always infuriating to use.

The attempt at a Metroid 1-like atmosphere is poor, and the soundtrack is mostly generic, dull cyberpunk that fails to leave any sort of impression. The game's story and dialogue also suck, and no amount of lore will change that.

I love this game so much, simple playstyle of an old school Metroidvania with fun weapons/tools, story is slow but has depth if you can find it in the hidden pages, in game glitches are an awesome way to express the effects of the world to the players.

Bought the second game too, Axiom Verge 2, definitely would buy a 3 game if made.

Um dos melhores metroidvania que já joguei, é mais metroid que castlevania rsrs, curti muito a exploracão, as músicas é um capitulo a parte. O Jogo não é punitivo, ao morrer fica guardado todo progresso mesmo sem ter salvado, achei isso bom.

Es un gran juego, si te gustan los metroidvania te va a gustar.
La banda sonora y la ambientación son buenísimas, tiene un lore interesante con una historia sencilla pero con algunos giros muy potentes.
Tiene gran variedad de armas, lo que puede ser negativo porque la mayoría no las acabas usando mucho, y power-ups que hacen el bactracking muy satisfactorio.
Quizá el punto en el que más flojea es el combate, que sin ser malo se nota que le falta un poco

for a game that takes me around 2.5 hr to beat and that i have over 173 hr on it the replay is grand with a built in rando i have came back to this so many times SM is one of my all time faves and now so is this game is it low res yep still love it good rando and good story if you are a fan of SM try this one.

I really like this game. It's very expansive. The design is very maze-like, and I found myself getting lost a few times. I got jumpscared by the first secret world I found because I thought I broke something. The sound effects and music are a little grating at times, though.
