Avorion

Avorion is a procedurally generated sci-fi sandbox where players start out at the edge of the galaxy and must find their way to its core. Players build their own ships, which they will use to explore the galaxy, trade and fight. Space ships are mainly of large scale, with crews, turrets and energy systems that you will have to manage. The galaxy gets more hostile, but also more rewarding the closer players get to its core. You're free to play however you want, as a mercenary, freighter captain, admiral, scavenger or pirate, it's all up to you.

A few centuries ago, an unknown cataclysmic event nearly tore the galaxy apart and spawned unsurmountable hyperspace rifts throughout the entire galaxy. Since then, the center of the galaxy has been cut off from the rest and a mysterious alien species, the Xsotan, has turned up there.

2. Приятная и понятная прогрессия.
3. Много различных активностей.
4. Свобода в постройке кораблей.
5. Низкие системные требования.
6. Широкий кооператив.
7. Можно играть в нее как от третьего лица, так и в "режиме стратегии".
8. Полноценный мультикрю.

Минусы:
1. Проблемы с производительностью, если загружать корабли с большим количеством блоков.
2. Мало геймплейных модов в мастерской.
3. Неочевидные квесты.

В общем впечатление крайне положительное, играть интересно. В кооперативе так вообще шик.
На скриншотах и видео выглядело сомнительно, но в действительности все оказалось намного лучше. Советую к покупке.

If the ship building mode is such a big part of the game, why cant you do simple things like move a block you already placed? I'm utterly shocked at how bad it feels. I wouldn't have gotten the game if I knew it was this poor.

If you like X4, or hell, Eve, you might like this, as its a combination of many games, its systems are simplified but thats not an issue, as you can take your time. Whats even better is that there IS multiplayer, unlike many games of the same genre. Which can be fun with your friends. Make your empire grow. Just remember, this is NOT an empire building game, you can do it, but thats not the focus as its not too deep.

Not only you can build your own ship, you can also build stations, do trading and more. Overall its a good game for those looking to scratch that itch of X4 in a simplified manner, while allowing to build your own ships.

As someone who generally prefers to be shooting something in the face, to sit down and 100% this game is a testament to its design and playability. I've never played anything else like it and probably never will. To be a space waring titan of commerce in a fleet of ships you design yourself is fun as hell. I think my buddy bought me Avorion because it's so far out my wheelhouse and he's an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Jokes on him, I had a blast.

This has earned a coveted place on my "scratches the Freelancer itch" shelf of my library. It is often difficult to describe what that means, or why I spend so much time looking for it. On the surface, it is not an overly deep or complicated game, it does not appear to have particularly high production value (no voice actors, minimal texturing, little lore/flavor/story, no flare art, and most of the content is procedurally generated. There is also not much for mission diversity or distinguishing feel to different sectors/areas.

That does not sound like a glowing endorsement, but somehow it really all works together. Under the relatively unpolished surface, sits a surprisingly robust framework for turning a player loose to shape their own personal galaxy in whichever way they desire. The MAJOR selling point of Avorion is experience flexibility. It goes leaps and bounds beyond the traditional "Economy / Diplomacy / Combat" win conditions, and lets the player really branch out to approach the few defined goals however they want.

The player gets the usual Mine/Salvage/Trade/Fight options for obtaining materials and currency, and the usual goal of "Get better ship, explore more dangerous area." Unusually, though, the player is then offered the option of buying some random seed generated ships, building their own ships from the absolute lowest granular block level (with few guardrails), or connecting directly to the Steam Workshop to peruse plans for ships that other players have built and uploaded. The player also gets to decide between building a giant hero ship and taking on the galaxy solo, building a combat formation comprised of different specialist ships working in tandem (from little fighters up to hulking dreadnoughts), or an armada of multiple formations staffed with NPC captains and sent off to do his or her bidding in distant areas of the galaxy while the player works on something else. Further along in the game, the player can also build their own space stations to manufacture/trade with other denizens of the galaxy.

While there are multiple approaches to end-game, the primary focus is space combat, and there are a satisfying variety of weapons and equipment classes/levels/rarities to appease the RPG/dungeon crawler crowd, acquired generously through trade stations and combat loot. Ship variety/class is a complete non-issue, as the player is granted unrestricted access to build nearly any size/shape/objective ship from the ground up at any time (more/better components are unlocked as the game progresses, but there are very few guardrails).

The real party piece with Avorion, though, is command/control. The game starts off similar to a 3rd person shooter, with the ship as the player character. The usual control inputs apply, allowing "fly where you look" style, or "fly with keyboard and shoot where mouse looks" style, and the game can be completed entirely in that mode. If the player decides to run a fleet instead of one ship, he or she can use keyboard shortcuts or mouse selection to issue orders to escorting ships in their area. Where things diverge from the standard, though, is that the player is also free to switch to a top-down view of their sector at any time (think map view), and gain the ability to select any/all of their ships in the area like units in an RTS, and assign them move/attack orders anywhere else in the sector. It's a bit like playing Freelancer with wingmates one minute, and then with the push of a button playing the same engagement as StarCraft. And it's not just a gimmick, either; one can rapidly switch back and forth, using RTS mode to coordinate flanking maneuvers, and then hopping down into direct control of any particular ship in "real space" for fine tuning positioning or targeting.

At the end of the day, there isn't a whole lot of curated/directed content, but there is an extremely flexible framework that one can use to play Space Legos with. There is also a reasonably active modding community to spice things up with, once you have played through the vanilla experience. Very good value in hours-of-fun per dollar invested.

Really great in-depth unique game with elements from several genres, which is great replay value. It's got a little Sim City style making stations and trying to make an economy work for you or just ignore the economy and make your own parts, it's got the expected shootemup main storyline of advancing your ships, you can just mine ore yourself or higher NPCs to pilot your custom built ships to mine for you as well as other tasks like trading. The ship building aspect is very customizable, similar to Space Engineers. Random events keep things interesting. There are many meta goals you can do besides following the main storyline such as conquest, piracy, empire building, multiplayer servers if you want a more dynamic experience.

Игра по своему прекрасна, но когда я играл с другом(мы были в одной стране), то при появлению любого вражеского корабля, у меня повышался пинг(было дело что до 100000+), он был хостом если что.
Так-же пинг повышался когда нейтральное судно становилось вражеским.

В итоге могу сказать что игра хороша, но пожалуста, исправть сетевой код(ну или то что отвечает за пинг)

How have I not recommended this yet. This game is incredible. There's so much to do, and so much customizability to be had.

In space games, I tend to most enjoy a playstyle that centers on (a) being a big hull/armor-tank, and (b) using drones. I think this game enables that playstyle better than any others. But if you're a speedy, shield-focused guy, then that's here too. Big time.

There's so much to love in this game, and you can tell the developer loves it too. 11/10 recommend.

Очень "залипательно". Сразу стоит сказать строительство кораблей в Avorion, это конечно не Space Engineers, но в этом есть свои существенные плюсы (как минимум не так "душно" =D как в Space Engineers с починкой элементов корабля). На данный момент наиграл относительно немного и без DLC (т.к хочется осваивать все в порядке выхода игры\дополнений), но впечатления очень положительные. Проект явно обделен вниманием, либо каким-то образом "проходил" мимо меня столько времени ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

It's a good little experience, could it be a bit better? Yes, but it does have a good ship builder, limited custom turrets, relatively expansive sandbox.

Is it a full AAA experience? No, but it doesn't attempt to be one of those "expansive narratively games". IT doesn't try to do everything and that's okay, for the price and scope. But what it does it competent so overall, fairly good game.

This is my favorite indie game, and it's about time I left a review for this game after all these years and 1,100+ hours. I mainly love the versatility of this game. You can play it many different ways.

You can either build your own ships through its complex but fun build system, or if you're lazy like me, most of the time you'll be using other people's builds from the workshop. If you choose to build yourself, however, you can REALLY flex your creativity.

You can buy or ignore the DLC. I bought it to support the devs and for some of its content, but nothing in there is required, and you can still play co-op with friends regardless of who has it or not.

You can build your own complex trade network, or don't, and simply rely on those already existing via NPCs.

The combat is pretty simple, but fun.

There is a story, but it's more there as a guide to why you're doing what you are. If heavy story is required for you, I suggest avoiding this game. But for me, gameplay is king.

Other reviews have already said all this though, so while I highly recommend this, I'm going to focus on my downsides. There's a few annoyances that have always been in the game. These criticisms come from a place of love, not negativity. My biggest criticisms are about the new player experience, since it's disheartening to bring someone into my favorite indie game, only for the ones who quit to quit for the below reasons. It's always these reasons.

1: Collision with anything owned by an NPC results in massive reputation loss. Even if it's them ramming into you while you're completely stationary. Reputation is lost much quicker than it's gained, so this is especially annoying when it happens. This is my biggest complaint.

2: The tutorial is lacking. I've brought at least a dozen people into this game, and I always need to explain more than the tutorial does. For example, the reputation loss thing above isn't mentioned in the tutorial, nor is the proper way to dock to stations, which often leads to my newbie friends losing a lot of reputation when they accidentally collide with a station. Another example is when you build your first ship, it's not really obvious to new players that your ship's HP will slowly degrade because it'll be lacking crew the moment you even slightly size it up. It's also quite annoying when pirates attack early while you're building your first ship, even in the newbie zone, as it's entirely possible you don't even know random pirate attacks are a thing by this point.

3: Because of how small the tutorial is, the earlier parts of the game can feel very slow, and the game doesn't do an excellent job at explaining all the systems, UI, etc it has. If I had to put a number to it, I'd say it only explains half of them. It should focus on teaching these things during these slow hours so new players don't get too bored.

It's not gonna be everyone's type of game, but for me it's a 9/10. I've done multiple play throughs and approached each of them differently. I imagine I've still got a few play throughs ahead of me too, and adventures with new friends who have yet to play this with me.

It's a decent game but every 10 minutes I found something that feels very.. fake? And I wished I was playing x3/x4.

Ship orders are fine, but half the time they're not actually doing anything in the world, they just disappear and there's a timer that tells you when they "finish".

Factions exist but they're completly static. They don't build stations, they barely have any ships, they don't trade as far as I know. Economy in most places is dead. Even if you find a sector that has A LOT of factories, they still are not really producing goods because (I assume) AI can't even handle basic supply.

The game claims the ships of different factions are different but that's a lie. They all look similar, they all fight similar, they just look vaguely different.

69 Hours in Avorion – How I Accidentally Won a Trade War

When we started Avorion, I was broke. Not “low funds.” Not “tight margins.”
I mean borrowing-money-for-basic-upgrades broke. My friends had a plan: build a glorious trade empire. Routes. More cargo ships. Then bigger cargo ships. Their entire strategy was basically, “If ship big, profit big.” Me? I was the guy in the background chewing on asteroids and asking for loans.

“Hey, can I borrow some credits?”
“I’ll pay you back.”
(I did not pay them back.)

Then one of our friends decided to become a pirate. And that’s when everything spiraled in the best possible way. Suddenly there were factions mad at each other. Convoys getting intercepted. Reputation shifting. What began as “casual piracy” turned into a full-blown trade war that was getting dangerously hostile. And somehow, I ended up in the middle. The traders needed more ships. Then bigger ships. Then escorts for those ships. They weren’t bad at the game — they were just laser-focused on expansion. Scale, scale, scale. Meanwhile I was sitting there with steady production and something they didn’t have:

Supply.

That’s when the negotiations started. “Oh, you need materials for three new freighters?”
Yeah, I can help with that. “You need upgrades so your ships don’t get deleted by pirates?”
Let’s discuss terms. It wasn’t evil. It wasn’t even planned. But being the guy in the middle of a trade war — with a pirate feeding chaos on one side and expansion-happy traders on the other — meant everyone needed what I had. The loans stopped. The bargaining began. And slowly, the numbers flipped.

The former borrower became the financier of fleet expansion. I wasn’t hoarding some secret endgame stash — I just had steady income at the exact moment demand exploded. By the time the galaxy cooled down, I wasn’t the guy mining anymore. I was the richest member of the group And because I reinvested everything into ships (to protect “business interests,” of course), I also had the most powerful fleet. The funniest part? I never set out to dominate anything. I just wanted to stop asking for money.

Avorion is brilliant because it lets stories like this happen naturally. No scripted empire path. No forced progression. Just player chaos, bad decisions, piracy, trade wars, and one former debtor quietly negotiating his way into galactic power.

10/10 would start broke and bargain my way to supremacy again.

Let me just be real that I don't actually hate this game. I really, really want to love it and recommend it. Avorion does so many things right for what it is, and it does a lot at once without feeling too terribly bloated. It has good dedicated server support as well and is probably a lot of fun to play with friends. Not to mention, the level at what you can do to build a ship is unmatched. But the onboarding process for a new player is one of the worst I've ever seen in any game. All the tutorial does is teach you about the basics of ship combat, barely touches up on arguably the most important thing which is how to actually BUILD a ship, and then drops you in with absolutely zero forward knowledge on what to do next. You're kind of just on your own to figure things out about some of the really important mechanics like trading. Not to mention spending the entire start of the game, shooting at asteroids for an hour isn't exactly fun, and I can't ever get a captain to automate simple tasks despite following everything the game tells me. The progression should be quite simple on paper but in practice feels incredibly overwhelming. I shouldn't have to fiddle around user-created guides for hours on end just to figure out simple mechanics in the game that the game's tutorial refuses to elaborate on.

Maybe it'll click with me at some point and my perspective will change for the better, and I really hope it does - it's stuck in my library and I feel a need to try to enjoy it in some way. But I just can't help but refuse to recommend it, and the terrible new player experience and complete failure of a cohesive tutorial or other helpful in-game guide will forever remain a negative point regardless.

This is like if someone made an MMO but also wanted people to play it and not just spend money relentlessly, or grind for a pittance.

it has all the bells and whistles plus creative freedom and some absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bangin expansions, the only thing i didn't like was how they changed captains, the system is nice but i like to make about a hundred ships and do huge space battles, sourcing even garbage captains gets tough at the scales i operate at. But i digress

Avorion feels like the culmination of all the space games I used to play as a kid, it's got all the bells and whistles and in-depth mechanics you could hope for, and it's genuinely an amazing feet that this game plays both as an RTS and a real-time space sim. It's also super wholesome to see it still has such an amazing and active community too!

Actually really good. Would be amazing to set up a server to play with friends. The ship building can be as in depth or as simple as you like. Pretty good gameplay, little bit grindy BUT you can continue to get captains for ships you build, so you can run ten ships each on five hour missions while you sleep and stuff. Very fun scifi game

This is one of the best games I've ever played. I wish I'd found it sooner! Also one of the best truly open-world game engines I've experienced. Factions are actively at war behind the scenes, while you play. You can explore, fight, harvest, trade, run a space corporation, build a fleet from scratch, and grow an empire, or simply be a pirate with some escort ships and attack whoever you want. Diplomacy matters. The game gives several options to advance and doesn't require you to grind for hours. Co-op is so much fun, but solo is great too. I really appreciate the developers for this game. They put a ton of thought into so many mechanics that allow you to customize ships, choose thousands of weapons and weapon variants, modify weapon schematics, loot endlessly, and enemies are fun and get harder in harder areas.

Cons: The game had a steep learning curve. That said, its a game where you keep getting to experience ah-ha moments of cool features as you discover them.
You can grind early on and build an unstoppable ship, or you could do like I did and skip the grind venture boldly into challenging combat to gain better loot... or die trying. This is such a great open world space exploration game where you get to do what you want. Highly Recommend!

I've played this game for a very long time. i've come back over the years to try it again and again. but the devs i feel are not doing anything to try and keep the game alive in any meaningful way. they promised to advertise the game when they did there DLC crap. they never did its only been word of mouth for this game and its just slowly going down. It did not help that the devs Banned alot of modders that critisized them also. i just feel like the game i grew enjoy slowly fall apart and rot away. the dev locked himself away.

Das Spiel macht spaß, bis zu einem gewissen punkt. Sobald du den Endboss getötet hast, oder einer auf dem Server. Wird alles im inneren Kreis zugespammt mit dem Xsotan Invasion Events.

Wer sein Spiel einmal selber gespielt hat, würde merken, das die Wellen und die stärken Vanilla viel zu stark eingestellt sind. So kann es vorkommen, das es bis zu 20+ Schiffe im Sektor gibt. Ein einfaches abhauen in einen neben Sektor ist nicht mal möglich, da das Event stets neu Startet bis du einfach stirbst.

Dazu kommt einfach dieser unnormale Lag und ja, es ist ein Guter Server mit sehr viel Leistung.

Make ship, pack it with armor but still balanced, use some small turret, go pirate hunting.
get a BIG WEAPON froma a rare drop, use it, obliterated a ship in one shot. An absoulute Build and Destroy masterpiece.

Its not perfect, but for what it is - a singleplayer/co-op/multiplayer game that lets you engage with as many or as few of its primary elements as you want (ship building, the research mechanics, real time space combat, RTS style space combat, strategy based gameplay, territory fights, and more), I found all of them quite solid and enjoyable - not perfect, but for having all those as opt in in the same game that'd be a steep ask indeed. If you're looking for more content, the workshop has a variety of extra stories available, and the difficulty changes are staggering. Especially if you've got friends to play with or are willing to engage with the DLC, Steam Workshop, or just alternate play styles, replay value is certainly there, which is a bonus stop the time your first playthrough can certainly eat up.
Plus, even if you amp the difficulty, you can't really brick a save - get shot back to square one, maybe, but even that's unlikely.
So yeah. Extremely worth it, and I hope more people play because the current state is honestly great.

I started out mining and doing little jobs.

I've since created lore for an entire fleet of ships and the story of their journey to the center of the galaxy. The found a Star Destroyer at one point (Steam Workshop builds are insane).

This game will pull you in like a black hole if you let it. Fleet management, space battles, RTS mode, faction dynamics, galaxy-wide economy, the list goes on.
