this game is amazing! I am surprised its not more popular tbh. the movement is fluid and the pixel art is lovely and the roguelike abilities and meta progression could keep me coming back just on their own, so both combined just makes the game perpetually better. There is a lot of variety in room choices with a lot of random special rooms sprinkled in as well which are always fun. I love games that let me challenge extra bosses in the middle of a room run for extra special goodies :S

I picked up Astral Ascent plus all DLC for an astonishingly low price of around $23 give or take after having left it to simmer on my wishlist for what must be 3+ years at this point. Probably longer.

Something I had noticed during all that time was that, despite being out of early access for quite a while at some point, this game kept getting updates. More content, more DLC, more everything. All the while looking extremely high quality. Not many developers keep on adding content for such a long time after getting their game out of early access, and I appreciate Hibernan Workshop for what I consider as going the extra mile.
They love their game, and they want it to be the best game it can be.

My criticisms of this game are nitpicky at best, and unwarranted at worst, depending on how you look at it.
To preface this: Astral Ascent feels amazing to play. It's responsive, fluid, looks and feels gorgeous. And it has a seemingly never-ending supply of voiced dialogue.
But with how good all of these things are, it lacks depth in comparison to its virtues.

As of writing this review, I've played this game for 21-some hours. In this time, I've beaten the final boss on various "destiny" levels (which is this game's version of an extended difficulty slider, think "torment" in Hades) going until up to 15 or so until the horrible realization struck me that it really doesn't matter much what character I'm playing, or what weapons I use, or what skills I'm picking up. All that matters is picking up stat upgrades and matching my gambits (skill bonus/modifiers) according to the imprints I get. I haven't played a single run making it to the final boss that doesn't melt him so hard, it doesn't matter whether I dodge his attacks or not.

There's a plethora of different, supposedly run altering upgrades you can grab and use during your runs, but as nice as they are on paper, you don't need them. Of course I could crank up the destiny/difficulty to a point where I have to play perfectly, but it won't change the fact that most of systems related to my character exclusively realistically don't matter beyond preference. And that really means the only systems during your run worth interacting with are gambits, imprints and stat upgrades, all of which WILL get old fast, because they're the same for every character.

There's a whole lot more to Astral Ascent than just its gameplay - the dialogue and story being the standout, but you can also decorate your base, change your character's appearance, read more lore, get lost in the beautiful environments... Unfortunately, none of these things hook me quite as much.

If you're more into the story aspect of the game and can get over the way it tells it's story incrementally (a tiny bit each run you do, you're basically being drip fed) I'm sure there's a lot more to dig into here, but for me, there just isn't much more to do here.

I still absolutely recommend Astral Ascent, but I just want to give a fair warning to potential buyers that, if we're looking at things from a gameplay perspective exclusively, there certainly are games with more depth per dollar out there.
For what I paid, I got my money's worth, but with how amazing everything else about this game is, I was expecting to sink 50 hours more until feeling like I'd seen everything there is to see gameplay-wise.

Однозначно рекомендую игру к покупке. Лор, сюжет, раскрытие персонажей и их взаимодействия друг с другом - все на высоте. По поводу геймплея - самобытный слешер-рогалик, постоянно держащий темп, из того, что мне не нравится на данный момент - при собирании конечного билда иногда не видно атаки противников ( в частности из-за некоторых эхо). Раз затронул билдострой, то если уж и говорить - то просто ВАУ. Редко можно найти рогалики, в которых можно реализовать почти все что хочешь - появилась идея ракетного билда через превращение ракет в электрические ростки? Дерзай. И о боже, как же раскрыты персонажи - это просто высший пилотаж на уровне HADES, каждый персонаж чувствуется живым, а не просто болванкой (киран не в счёт,в семье не без дибила). Боссфайты - огонь, особенно начиная с 6+ уровня судьбы, когда бои превращаются в полноценный танец. Видно, что игру создавали с душой! От некоторых катсцен можно словить муражки по спине ( чего стоит только катсцена боя с Андромедой). Если подвести итог - рогалик на 95/100 и однозначно попадает в мой пантеон любимейших рогаликов, в которые хочется возвращаться несмотря ни на что!

I like it more than I thought I would.

[*] Mana (for spells) as a resource is well balanced. It's easy to recover, but you'll always be out if you spam.
[*] Lots of objectives to focus on inside runs.
[*] Potential pacing issues due to stuff gradually unlocking. You will not even have a theoretical chance to see 70% of the gamer on first run.

Negatives mostly come down to poor pacing and grindy nature of the game. They could cut the grind in half and it would still be too long for what it offers, so it doesn't feel fully beatable.

怪不得小众，这BOSS是真牛批乱打乱跳看到红光就已经晚了。双子那房的小怪和地形陷阱真牛皮。肉鸽联动太少，哈迪斯联动都够少的了，这个更少。小众肉鸽很垃圾，看似很多流派但是根本成型不了一点

局外成长太耗时间了，这个游戏前期难熬，中期可玩性还可以。后期难度上来了更恶心，最爽的时候就是命运6，不打高难度还挺好玩的。

This game is one of the most polished roguelites I’ve played in a long time. The combat feels incredibly smooth and responsive, and every run feels different thanks to the huge variety of spells, auras, and builds. It really rewards creativity, sometimes you start with a random set of abilities and suddenly discover a completely broken synergy that melts bosses.

The pixel art is honestly gorgeous. Every biome is vibrant, the animations are fluid, and the bosses look incredible. The soundtrack also hits hard and really sells the fast-paced combat.

What impressed me the most is the progression system. Even when you lose a run, you’re still unlocking new characters, spells, and upgrades, so it always feels like you’re moving forward. It’s the kind of roguelite where you say “just one more run”… and suddenly it’s 3 AM.

Amazing combat, beautiful pixel art, tons of build variety, and extremely addictive. Highly recommended.

I bought Astral Ascent expecting a cheap roguelite snack. Instead it ate my evening and asked for a second serving.

The first hours are chaotic: the screen becomes a festival of spells, particles and “what just hit me?” If you bounce off early, I get it. But if you push a few runs, the game turns from noise into a system: spells + gambits + auras start syncing and suddenly you’re not surviving—you’re building. Zodiac bosses are the star of the show: readable patterns, fair pressure, and a very satisfying “I learned this” payoff.

I started with Ayla, then tried Yamat and the game clicked instantly. Her kit feels more controlled, and I was beating Zodiacs like Taurus, Aries, and Lupus and hitting World 3 early. Also: the writing has personality. A dragon NPC named Barbecue exists. Enough said.

Pros: great bosses, real build synergy, strong replay loop, fun dialogue
Cons: early visual overload, learning curve can feel messy

Verdict: Not perfect, but absolutely worth it if you like roguelites. Give it a few runs and it pays you back.

I bounced off this hella quick my first time trying it & almost refunded it, but I could tell there was a lot of heart put into it even if my first 4 runs failed to hook me.

Then some time passed, the game received a few more updates, and when I revisited it, I found myself instantly in love. Combat is fun & snappy, the spell animations are satisfying & nice to look at, the music is great, and they have a DLC to support charity. Easy recommend

This game has everything going for it. Cool world, great mechanics, fun systems, multiple characters and play styles, and an absolutely [i]fantastic[/i] art style.

That said, the gameplay loop is needlessly grindy, the enemies and projectiles will often track and teleport to your location regardless of how well you time your dodge, and the length of your runs are ultimately random, as the enemies seem to scale up right alongside you, making any form of progression feel ultimately pointless.

You never deal enough damage, your spells never have mana to cast them when you need it, and attacks build your mana charge so slowly that you’re purposefully putting yourself in danger more often than you are making intelligent plays. And as I said prior, even if you dodge things “correctly” when the game signals that you’re supposed to dodge, enemies might just decide to radically alter their shot arcs or just simply teleport to you, effectively making the sole defensive mechanism you have absolutely useless.

I am going to try to get a refund for this game, but since I’ve played it for six hours, I don’t know if Steam will allow me to. I want to play something fun. This is *almost* fun, but its damage and enemy behavior makes it a cruel experience in which the game actively lies to the player in real time at multiple junctures.

And while I can absolutely appreciate a difficult game that expects you to learn its rules and how you can bend them to your advantage, I don’t appreciate being [b]♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lied to[/b] by the game’s developers multiple times during the course of a single play session. That’s disrespectful on a whole other level that I simply can’t accept.

It’s a shame such an amazing game was ruined by such brazen callousness.

我是个很懒惰的人，很多游戏我都不愿意去评论，但这个游戏，说实话我十分喜欢，肉鸽元素和优美的音乐画风都很符合我的胃口，很多时候哪怕不打游戏，也会挂着听听音乐。其次游戏里有成长的历程和丰富的游戏内容和它价位十分不符，简直太值了，本体的内容就很多了，dlc哪怕9.9，和本体价位比起来肯定没怎么有性价比，但是对于这个游戏厂商，支持支持还是可以的

因为cdk非常便宜，所以是早早入手之后在看推荐玩的游戏。黑盒发一个问类哈迪斯的帖子，基本都在推星界。进入第一眼以为是小骨，开玩之后感觉真是横板哈迪斯，精髓全在这个机动性上。目前根本都来不及体验法术什么的，就这个贴脸一直搓招都已经爽到脱水了，贪刀人的最爱。然后，看了下dlc评价，制作组，卖的又便宜还一直更新，良心的感觉要哭出来。又看了下本体好评，才两千多条。那不行，必须写一条撑撑场子，尽一点绵薄之力
看了一眼大家的评论有说这个技能顺序的，确实很难受，个人反正是不调顺序，随到谁算谁，其实多给几个法术槽位（按键）就解决了的，对话和确认和交互又是不同的按键，为啥不把这个按键省下来给法术，这个设计是有点难以理解。不过确实对本人来说无伤大雅。如果有手柄开震动应该会更爽。管你这的那的，跟我的连击说去吧

rapido, frenetico, colorido.
una vez que entendes las sinergias cada run se vuelve muy divertida, y te hace sentir rotisimo si tenes buenos combos de auras y hechizos.
despues de cada run la progresion de siente y te recompensa para seguir intentando.
los bosses son todos muy diferentes y complicados aun cuando reconoces los patrones de ataque.
lo que mas me gusto a mi personalmente es la movilidad dentro del mapa y los diseños de todo.
este juego tiene un arte hermoso. aunque tengo que admitir que en las etapas late de las runs cuando peleas contra un jefe es dificl distinguir que pasa en pantalla, pero fuera de eso es un juego muy bonito a la vista.

recomiendo mucho darle una oportunidad a este juego, es muy divertido 10/10

Astral Ascent is where the fun begins. Constant updates, amazing mechanics, new things to explore, a well written story, and it is an indie game. Will definitely play it more, and support the developers, and I recommend everyone doing the same.
