Zapper is an action-packed and addictive game that starts with the 'avoid-em-up' game play mechanics of Blitz Games' own Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge, and then takes the action to a whole new level. In this action-adventure game, Zapper (a cricket) hops his way through six interactive worlds in a quest to find his brother, held captive by the evil magpie queen. Dangerous traps and even more dangerous enemies await Zapper. It will take fast-footed skill and timing to conquer all the worlds and survive the final showdown with the magpie queen.

uring a squabble over television, Zapper tries to use his brother Zipper (a grub) as a substitute TV antenna. Zipper is snatched away by an infamous thieving magpie, Maggie, who leaves an egg at the scene of the crime. Unfortunately, much to his dismay, Zapper sets off and determines to rescue his brother and turn Maggie into a jailbird. At the end of the game, Zapper gets Zipper back after defeating Maggie, and finally sets him up as a substitute TV antenna, just in time to watch TV by himself.

I genuinely like this game despite its age. A good soundtrack can do a lot to keep me engaged, and this game has a few very good tunes in it. That being said, though, this port is not well done at all. I would even dare call it lazy, and I swear I am not one to throw that word around much when it comes to video game development.

The only thing this Steam listing adds over owning the original game on CD-ROM is a launcher that contains a scan of the game's manual, as well as some trivia taken verbatim from TVTropes (in fact, this trivia segment outright contains the link to the TVTropes page of the game).
With this rather cheap addition, however, they omit using the old configuration app with which you would have started the original version of the game. That application is the only way to change the game's resolution (and controls, but at least there's the Steam controller overlay to mitigate that).
Granted, you can still launch the config app from your local files, but then the game will prompt you to insert the game disc. This means that unless you still have access in some way to a disc copy of the game (which, again, is IDENTICAL to this port, minus the barren launcher) and thus would make buying this game on Steam redundant, it's outright impossible to play the game on a resolution above 640x480 or to change your controls without the Steam controller overlay.

On an aside, since I do have access to a disc copy, I can point out that the game really wasn't made for a 16:9 aspect ratio. As a result, it just reduces your vertical field of view, which makes it very obnoxious to play stages that mostly contain vertical movement. Windowed resolution is locked to 640x480, and I imagine a lot of people are familiar with the issue of playing fullscreen in a non-native resolution on multi-monitor setups; it just shuffles all your opened applications around.

Worst of all, though, me buying and playing this copy of the game prompted a friend to buy it as well. They are using Windows 11, whereas I'm still on Windows 10. The game won't even launch for them. This, more than any of the other rather large annoyances I mentioned above, is why I cannot recommend you buy this game.
If this compatibility issue gets resolved, you can consider this review changed to a tentative recommendation for people who know their way around Steam's controller configuration overlay and don't mind playing the game in what is a very low resolution these days.

I am of the opinion that there is no reason for a re-release >20 years after the game originally came out to have such a highly conditional recommendation, owing to a lack of very basic configuration options or even compatibility with the most common operating system as I write this review.

P.S.: I double checked the launcher to back up my statement about the trivia excerpt and closed the launcher without starting the game. It apparently kept running in the background and added about half an hour to my play time as I was writing this review. Steam has been trying to stop the game for the past 5 minutes since I noticed this. My already low opinion on the sole thing Atari seems to have changed from the original release has just sunk deeper still.

Played this a long time on PS2, was excited to check it out again. It's uh...not great!
No controller support, and also this game is just mean as hell man. Some of these levels were designed by people with hatred in their hearts.

I do still like the puzzle-solving aspects tho'

There were four games you could get as prizes. I happened to get Zapper: One Wicked Cricket.

But I never got the full game. I only played the two levels available on the demo.

I had played a small segment of this game as a kid, since it was packaged on a PS2 demo disc. Back then I had little desire to play more, but seeing it on steam evoked some minor nostalgia.

I don't recommend it for a few reasons, split into two categories: the port and the original game. The port is functional, but barely so. There's a lot of settings missing, especially related to video and controls. Thankfully there's a guide showing you how to fix the resolution and somebody uploaded their steam controller bindings. In levels there are occasional visual issues, every once in a while I'd find an object that wouldn't interact like it should or that I could phase right through. Between these and the fact that the launcher quotes TV Tropes instead of writing its own summary, you get the feeling there just wasn't much passion or QA effort.

For the original game, there's not much there to recommend and if you want to go for 100% the game feels outright hostile. To 100% a level, you need to find all 100 fireflies within it in one go. If you miss one and finish the level, now you have to redo it and collect all 100 that time. Sometimes they're hidden offscreen, sometimes you can prevent one from being reachable if you break a crate too early, sometimes your muscle memory throws you into the yellow orbs that have to be picked up in a certain order to unlock hidden paths. Thankfully this is 'optional', however you will not experience a fourth of the levels in the game if you don't go for 100%. As for the regular gameplay, it's mediocre. It's a bit Frogger and a bit punishing platformer, nothing to write home about.

Short game but I'd say it's worth the price. Blitz Games was the developer of Frogger 2 on the PS1, which is widely regarded as one of the best Frogger games. Soon after that game released they started work on the third game but Konami turned them down because they were already working on a 3d platformer starring a new version of Frogger, the Godawful Frogger: The Great Quest. Instead of scrapping their work Blitz Games redesigned Frogger into Zapper The Cricket.
Getting this game to run is a bit difficult but there's a guide in the community tab that helps you set the resolution to 1080p and I think with some tinkering it's also possible to run this game on the Steam Deck. Atari/Infogrames should release this on other systems, like the Nintendo Switch, too because I think this is a hidden gem.

There have been no further updates despite many people reporting the same issue. Unfortunately it does not seem like much effort was put into this port, you'd be better off finding a free port online.

Genuinely one of my favorite games ever, childhood game that I've been wanting to play again for years. I love this game it's pretty perfect on my 2014 laptop (running windows 10) besides the obvious lag from the device being old. However like others have stated it doesn't work at all on newer devices (for example my 2023 laptop running windows 11) which is disappointing it clearly tries to work as it launches yet it fails to play it freezes on the starting screen and only plays the music. I'd love to recommend the game but if it can't be played on most devices that's a big issues and I hope the devs fix it! I just wanna Zap on my better laptop </3

2003 habe ich dieses Spiel für die Playstation 2 gesehen und wollte es immer mal spielen, da es recht witzig aussah. Jetzt nach über 20 Jahren habe ich dieses Spiel nachgeholt. Zapper hat 13 abwechslungsreich gestaltete Level, die man recht zügig durchspielen kann. Das größte Problem ist die Steuerung. Mein Gamepad hat leider nicht funktioniert und es spielt sich mit Tastatur nicht wirklich gut. Mit Pfeiltasten kann man in eine Richtung springen. Mit Strg und Alt kann man blitzen und einen Doppelsprung machen. Shift zeigt die Richtung des nächsten Ei, da man in jeden Level genau 6 Eier einsammeln muss. Und mit der Y-Taste kann man sich in eine Richtung ausrichten. Es scheint noch weitere Funktionen zu geben, jedoch habe ich diese nicht gebraucht bzw. gefunden, da das Spiel die Tasten nicht erklärt. Man muss also die Tasten testen, da die Symbole im Spiel nicht die Taste zeigen.

Die Grafik ist zwar farbenfroh, aber ansonsten total veraltet. PS2-Grafik halt. Der Sound ist in Ordnung. Es ist schon witzig und macht durchaus Spaß, jedoch ist dieser Plattformer für mich eher ein Konsolenspiel als ein PC-Titel. Wenn man etwas geduldig ist und sich etwas einarbeitet, dann bekommt man ein schönes, kleines Spiel. Jedoch hätte man das Spiel deutlich für den PC anpassen können vor allem von der Steuerung her. Ich weiß, das Spiel gab es schon damals für den PC, aber es ist wirklich eindeutig mehr ein Konsolenspiel. Für leidensfähige Nostalgiker okay, aber ansonsten gibt es leider deutlich bessere 3D-Plattformer.

Crazy underrated game if you're into platformers.

I do however wish some things would get addressed in this version like being able to access the original config setup.exe which right now i just broken.
You cannot change things like resolutions because of it.

Amazing take on Frogger.
Zapper is a puzzle platformer with tons of secrets, bonus content, time attack, speedrun mode, wacky levels, challenge and collectibles.

Don't bother with keyboard just use a Steam input and controler for one heck of a Cricket's Bizarre Adventure!

I think it's amazing that publishers are putting in the effort to bring back old games. While not trivial to traverse all the legal hoops required to do so, I think the bounty of nostalgia makes it worthwhile.

Glad to know Atari feels the same way.

Little side note: It's a functional retrogame with no extra's whatsoever. No steam achievements, trading cards or cloud saves. You can get it to work with the steamdeck, which is nice. But other than that, from a technical perspective, it is lagging behind compared to community efforts such as retroachievements and retroarch.

However, make no mistake. This game being on steam is a massive achievement from a legal perspective, I just find it a bit saddening that it isn't as impressive on the technical side of things.

Synopsis: The protagonist is a cricket who, after losing his guinea pig antenna, or brother, from the clutches of a terrible bird, must travel through different worlds to destroy its cursed eggs and save his brother.

Collectibles:
*Eggs - as a necessary part to complet the level, each one will have 6 eggs to collect.
*Lives - in various secret locations or outside in the arcade levels, you'll have various life items to collect. In all, you can have 99.
*Fireflies - The game has 100 optional fireflies in each of the 18 levels in the 6 worlds of 4 parts each where you have to go around and collect them in various secret places and for every 100 fireflies collected you will enter a zen bonus phase where you must collect the 100 coins and receive a shield hat to protect yourself. Also, when you collect all the fireflies in the three parts of each world, a fourth challenge arcade-style stage will be available where you must acquire all 100 fireflies in the allotted time distinguished by the last world where you will have time to collect the fireflies but with a separate bombastic and challenging challenge.

Composers John Guscott Matt Black Gerard Gourley Andrew Morris and the orchestrated atmosphere enhanced their style in several early and final levels. Some compositions were merely forced, such as the train stage where I seemed to hear the killing in the name of with every unnecessary tcha tcha tcha on the vocal.

Zapper One Wicked Cricket is a platform game released in the early 2000s based on the classic games in the Frogger saga, with the camera positioned at an angle as you navigate obstacles and collect objects. If you're a fan of the famous crash saga or the adjacent early classics, you'll be nostalgic for this one too!

!Note! : given the period when this game was released on steam, there was no remastering or improvement made to it, bringing the same effect with very low resolution, no support for controls and the commands automated by the arrow keys without any decent changes made and making it a bit challenging for those who expect an improved and enhanced similarity to today's times.

A failed port of a mediocre at best game

When I was younger, I remember playing this game and finding that I enjoyed the frogger like gameplay. I liked it enough to get me into the wider frogger games at large. This game in fact began as a frogger game, until it failed to secure the IP rights and had to be spun off into it's own thing. However, I'm not sure this would have been a particularly good frogger game.

What this game does right is the level design. Each level is fun to navigate and have interesting secrets to find that expand the skill ceiling for the game's platforming. On top of that, each world has unique and relatively good looking environments (if you like PS2 era graphics). On top of that, most levels are easy to read, so the challenge comes from the platforming, not finding things (there are a few exceptions to this). The main character also has a lot of personality and some great death animations.

Unfortunately, that's about all the praise I can give of this game. The main issue it has is with it's controls. First the way the game plays, and then again with how this game interacts on a PC. The main issue with the platforming is that you don't get any pre-input timing. This means that you cannot jump into a direction until the previous jump has been completed. This has killed me several times because there are many instances where you must jump quickly over dangerous terrain, but one of the inputs I thought was moving me in a direction was dropped, which left me plummeting to my death. On top of this, you have to press each input individually until you unlock a cheat after the second world (50% of the game). You cannot hold a direction and move in that direction, you have to press the direction over and over again to move in that direction. The cheat you can unlock to allow you to just keep the key pressed doesn't unlock until you start hitting levels where this becomes less and less useful. On top of this, the game eventually introduces key items you need to squash that run away from you and for you to succeed in hitting it, you need to either find a secret that gives your attack longer range (not always an option) or you must jump twice in the time it takes the item to move 1 space. This also tends to lead to death in the event you move too quickly.
All in all, the level design in interesting, but the enemy and movement mechanics often lead to frustrating deaths rather than interesting challanges.

On top of this, the PC port that this is lacks a huge array of options that most players want. The main mechanic that is missing is controller support, so you have to play using a very odd keyboard layout (arrow keys to move, with alt, ctrl and z and x used to rotate the character, which is critical to succeeding). On the plus side, steam allows you to map keyboard inputs onto a controller for a specific game, so I did play through this game with a controller. However, that doesn't really forgive the game for failing to have these options.

I completed the game and got 100% of all secrets and extras. Having completed the game and all it's extras, I can't say it was worth it. The cheats you unlock are bug eyes (makes that game much harder to see as if you're looking through a flys eyes), auto-hop (the afore mentioned hold to move cheat), flipped levels (just mirrors levels) and infinite super charge (higher range/damage attacks). Aside from these cheats, which aren't much, you don't unlock anything in the game for completing everything.

If you really want more frogger like platforming, this game isn't broken or awefull, but you really have to like that kind of game to get anything out of this

What the game is missing :
- Config menu for Audio, Video and Controls (cd-rom feature only, but there are some work around.)
- Multiplayer mode (console only, so no multiplayer on the PC port)

Not sure what happened but I finally was able to launch the game!

I suggest that you uninstall it from Steam and install it again perhaps.

The game works without any issue but in order to use the video, audio and controls config you need to either use the original Zapper cd-rom or emulate it. But you can also manually add the command in the zapper.dat file or use the guide on steam. I used the guide on steam and change the resolution of 1980x1200 to 3840x2160 and the game still worked!

Only the starting screen use the native resolution of the game afterward all the same use the 3840x2160 resolution except the movies that are played in the native resolution. Only downside using the 3840x2160 is that the UI is scaled on the native resolution.

It was a cold wintery night. I couldn't sleep, my blanket torn up, feet bare and a broken window with harsh blowing winds. My bed was hard, almost like stone. I called for anyone who would and could help.
When all of the sudden I hear an electric noise and a bright flash outside. Normally I would look out of the window because of curiousity, but it was too cold for that. I then heard some more electric noise and again a new bright flash. All of the sudden a dark figure hopped into the window.
I tried lighting the room with a candle.
"NO!" is what I heard loudly. I then saw that the dark figure had antennas. The figure quickly rubbed it's antennas together. A warm bright light shun through the room, it looked heavenly. I was certain an angel was here to save me. The figure leaned forward and I knew it then immediatly, it's Zapper!
"I am here to give you a fatherly hug" is what Zapper told me. Zapper brought his lit antennas to my face, I could feel the warmth it was creating. "Here, get under my wing, that is way warmer than your torn up blanket". Without further thought I accepted Zapper's offer.
For the whole night long Zapper held me tightly under his wing so that I wouldn't freeze. This is the kind of fatherly love which I needed. And I slept through the whole night without issue.
By morning Zapper made me scrambled eggs, he happened to have them with him. Due to his hospitality I could face the entire winter without ever getting cold.
I love Zapper.

Anyways, this game is from my youth and is very nostalgic. Controls are still as wonky as they used to be but if you can't get used to that I have one thing to say: Skill issue.

Zapper: One Wicked Cricket saved my life back in 'Nam. It was the year 1968. I was deployed to a squadron of ragtag soldiers and loose cannons. Zapper was one I never thought I'd get along with. A hardened soldier, rugged, but that battlefield sense of humor I couldn't stand. The draft brought many of America's oddities to the front lines, and I assumed Zapper was no exception. He proved his undying loyalty to his fellow men when I was shot in the heart. He went up to me, said "I run zaps around the medical industry" and sucked the bullet out of the wound. He reached out his hand and said "On your feet soldier, you're one wicked cricket now." He's a war hero, a legend, and will forever be missed. Rest easy, buddy.

Eu joguei quando era bem pequeno, deveria ter uns 3 anos. depois quando tinha uns 15 até agora com 23 fiquei procurando e nao achava a midia fisica pra comprar de novo pro PC e nem nenhum lugar pra pegar online (nem pirata dava pra encontrar um que funcionasse haha). Mas agora na steam consegui realmente jogar o zapper e to amando a experiencia.

玩到西部关卡依稀感觉确实是小时候玩过的游戏，记忆里似乎百战天虫也出过一作类似玩法的游戏，当时还奇怪“哇！一个系列全是回合制策略游戏的厂商竟然会做这种走格子游戏”，而且当时整个系列游玩的时间都不如这个游戏长，现在看来是记忆出现了偏差；不过老游戏的关卡设计是真的不错，场景想象力也很丰富，除了需要耐心游玩、画面跟不上时代外没有任何缺点，win10运行也很流畅，就当是恢复个童年记忆点了。[spoiler](小时候的我啥游戏都吃，真牛逼啊)[/spoiler]

I loved this game a kid and I was so excited to see this on Steam. A blast from my nostalgic past. But, sadly it is unplayable for me. I click play, get the Atari presents screen, click new game... and then nothing happens and it stops running. I've seen it work perfectly for friends but it just refuses to work for me and I don't know why. I'd love to play this game again so I hope this gets fixed. If anyone reads this, I'm not going to say don't get this game because I've seen it work on other peoples computers and it might play normally for you, so if your interested give it a go, but until it works and is playable for me it's a thumb down. :(

I loved Frogger 2 swampy's revenge, so glad to see its spiritual successor here on steam.

童年是在ps1和电脑win98上玩过这款游戏，随着2004年后电脑操作系统变成了winxp，游戏也变得不兼容了，至于ps1那就更没时间玩了。一晃2024年了，终于可以在steam上补票了，不过这个steam版本有个缺点，就是不支持手柄，只能用键盘玩（主要是对战小游戏模式可以同屏2人一起，用手柄方便），希望后续出补丁加强一下，这个游戏的中文名，没记错的话应该叫做蚱蜢闹翻天，非常推荐喜欢玩休闲类冒险游戏的朋友们，这个游戏关卡设计超棒的，有非常多的彩蛋，要全收集的话需要打通好多遍，当年我玩了至少十遍。

Well, this was unexpected! I've played this game many times on PS2. This is definitely one of the barest of bare-bones re-releases I've ever seen, as I assume this is the original PC version with minimal touch ups, but it is stable and smooth despite not having any adjustable video and resolution settings. Controller support implementation would be much appreciated too as the original console releases of this game had that. Other than that, this was not on my 2024 bingo card and I am positively delighted to see Zapper get some limelight again.

EDIT: I've just read the game description that the whole "ATARI PRESENTS" line is basically an archival movement and quite literally intended to be the original unaltered versions of games. Fair enough. If we see controller implementation and other QOL touch ups, fantastic; if we don't, I get it. I'm happy enough this exists.

This awesome game from my childhood is like Frogger but a wicked cricket. Music is good and levels are fun!

Its honestly amazing seeing this extremely niche game get a port of some kind, please give this a try!

Now that the issue that prevented the game from launching has been fixed, I can happily recommend this game! It's a very cute Frogger-like game, which makes sense for it originally being the sequel to Swampy's Revenge, but it has a bunch of original ideas in terms of both gimmicks and level aesthetics. The levels are visually distinct from one another and don't feel drab and samey.

So far, I think this is a really fun game that actually has neat gameplay mechanics. And the graphics aren't bad for 2002. So overall, I recommend this game.
