Nice game, feeling like battlestar galactica.
Don't get me wrong, I like challenging games, but this... It will grind you into space dust, on easy mode. One of those games that are balanced around its dev and their discord buddies having fun; and nobody else.
Brutal timers, all-bad choices, too sparse resources, missions that overwrite and silently cancel each other out with a topping of bugs and ships that simply disappear (when they're not betraying you on a whim). Succeeding? In this economy?!
The humor in this game is amazing. Good game overall, too. I didn't think I would like it (upon seeing the trailer) but I actually really enjoy the playstyle and everything (after trying the demo). This game isn't for everyone, but I suggest trying the demo to see if you like it. 👍

I am enjoying the game, but it is a bit buggy. Sometimes I get stuck and cannot select any of my fleet, or I cannot jump. But the variety of ships and little stories that pop up are entertaining. I'm hoping they fix the few issues that I've seen.

Why do I up vote a game that isn't finished, is rough around the edges, and lacks complex systems or graphics? Because I am having fun playing it and that is what matters in the end.
I like it. Dont know if it will ever be updated again but it was enjoyable enough for me and deserves a little bit more love.

Not unlike the plot to Battlestar Galactica, you are XO of the last remaining human battleship. Your mission is to collect as many survivors as possible, add them to your fleet, and lead them to safety as you flee from the Harvesters (Cylons, essentially).
Basically, you can either hail or attack different ships. Hailing a ship will usually bring up a situation where you can either add them to your fleet, or you can strip them of supplies. Attacking a ship can be dangerous, as repairing your ship(s) is not easy, and once a ship is lost, it's gone for good. Death is permanent and will re-start the game.
This is kind of rogue-like in that aspect. Be prepared to make a lot of bad choices that will permanently affect your "run-through". I say run-through, because I've played for 3 and a half hours and quickly realize that stopping to re-start is part of the gameplay. You learn as you go. The decisions can be "tough" at times -- if you like being the "hero" 100% of the time, this game may not be for you. You'll have to make tough decisions like abandoning people to certain death, robbing innocent strangers of much-needed supplies, etc.
There seems to be more depth to the game than I'm picking up at the moment, but so far, it's mostly been enjoyable. I haven't quit out of the game in frustration or boredom yet.
A special tip of the hat to the devs, as you can see that the ship manuevers have been influenced by shows like Battlestar Galactica and the Expanse (the retrograde burn during the midpoint turnover is chef's kiss).
10/10 - vector graphics/aesthetics
8/10 - general vibe (laid back retro)
5/10 - combat (looks kinda neat but you don't have much to work with in terms of fine-tuning or directly controlling your attacks)
8/10 - story (swings between humorous to heartbreaking)
Overall, 8/10. Would definitely recommend.

Great game, has a good atmosphere and is a lot of fun. I'd pick it up even outside of a sale, if you like games like FTL.

Listen. I know it's early access, but hear me out.
I was super excited to play this game when I saw a youtube video on it years and years ago. I put it on my wishlist soon after and waited for the right time to buy it. I really thought that three or so years later, the game would be in a much more fleshed out state.
But no. It still feels unfinished, or worse, un-tested. I cannot think of a single aspect of this game that is finished, much less polished. The controls are loose, the visual design is muddy, the UX is poorly thought out, the writing is grating, the gameplay boring, the overall vision not visualized. It's a bad sign when every single aspect of the game feels like it was put on the backburner to make more time for putting other parts of the game on the backburner.
I'm pretty sad that I'm so disappointed by this. I really thought I would like this game!

This is probably a candidate for a neutral review. The core of XOs gameplay doesn't seem to be that complicated, rather whether you win or lose is largely going to come down to knowing which are the trap options in the events and whether you luck past all the random in fleet drama that can happen. In its current form I can't recommend it. This game will live or die by how well the time sensitive element is balanced in the final version and right now they still haven't really figured out how to make it mesh properly with the other mechanics IMO. Wait for EA to end before you consider this one.
Sometimes you want a game that is quick to get into and addicting enough to scratch the itch. This game is great and has aged well. It is hard, you will die, you will start over and each play though is unique. Give it a shot.

It's a fun little game. I picked it up on sale and after 25 hours of play time I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. On the other hand, after 25 hours of play time I'm ready to move on to something else. The game gets a little monotonous after a while especially since you have to start over from the beginning when ever your flagship is destroyed. There is no saving the game except when you quit and then you can pick it up where you left off but that's it. After starting the game over a few times you will find yourself encountering the same obstacles over and over and you learn what the right answers are to get past them. I finally made it all the way to the last jump point but had my ship destroyed before I could make it and I'm just too bored to start all over...AGAIN! But I do recommend the game, especially if you can pick it up on sale. It will entertain you for a while and I will likely go back and play it again sometime when I'm in the mood for something light and simple to kill a little time.
Just isn't that fun. Too arcadey for my taste.
The game focuses way too hard on pushing you to the next system. You're encouraged to hail every ship you see, but the game then heavily punishes you for daring to engage with its content by warping in a fleet of absolutely massive ships you'll never be able to beat.
There is also a major focus on resource management, but being able to attain these resources is entirely based on RNG: whether you get the right kind of ship to get that resource, and if the planet you warp to actually has it for the ship to even gather. There's not a lot of room for skill when it's entirely based on luck of finding the right ship, and if you try to explore to find the right planet and hail ships the Harvesters will catch up to you. The game says you can't hope to save EVERYone, but I found I didn't have the time to save ANYone.
Overall the game is way too fast paced and luck based for me, and no options to change it. If there was an option to make the Harvesters move a lot slower or only have them expand when you jump to a new system... giving you time to actually play the game I think I'd enjoy it a lot more.
I really wanted to recommend this game, but after 16 hours I've kind of given up on it. The RNG reliance and thus difficulty is too high, and NOT the kind of difficult where you feel a sense of accomplishment when you overcome it. Being able to 'beat' a run, even on the lowest difficulty, is entirely about what random encounters you end up with. Events will be repetitive and you will quickly know the correct dialogue answer to get what you want, but what you NEED to succeed is from a limited scope of encounters.
The game encourages you to hail every ship you see, and this is important for gaining reputation as needed, but often you'll want to avoid certain encounters as they will result in reduced rep for a faction, or more cargo ships than you can hope to supply the water for. There are many interesting ship types and mechanics but you won't actually have the time to use them due to the forced fast-pace of the game. Missile boats are the only realistic way to clear the final challenge, so you're forced to be friendly with the Empire and pray to RNG that you can amass missile ships (and laser ships to screen for them) through the random events. This usually doesn't happen and you go into the final battle feeling like it was all a big waste of time.
These detractors aside, the style and gameplay elements that exist are very fun early on when you don't necessarily expect to win; it only became depressing after many runs.
Went through everything to reach the final sector just fine. Then derped in a single attack order on the final battle and welp. Merry go around we go. By the time I noticed something was amiss after doing some transfers, my combat ships are halfway to the other side.
PS: Killed the 3 objectives. Battleship died at the same time resulted in game over.
You have been warned in advance that there's quite a few bugs, including but not limited to, freezing permanately, reaper base teleporting out (and locking the jump gate), and a lot of weird behaviors.
This game is good and has a nice difficulty, but some bugs I cam across with water. Had a fleet of 8 ships and didnt have water problems with and this is without farm ships. Then had a fleet of 10: 4 pact with the cruiser included, 2 farm ships, ridiculous water and a ship mining for water, rest were cargo. Had a water riot and had to disband 3 ships, then jump start mining for water and the water was full and needed half of what I had, jump and immediately had another water riot and had to disband 3 more ships. Please fix this losing over half a fleet to non combat is pretty bad.
entertaining. Good for a laugh and different everytimne
I'll split this review to what I enjoyed and what I did not.
What I enjoyed
1) You really get the feeling of trying to build together a rag-tag fleet of military and civilian ships, fleeing away from a seemingly unstoppable enemy while building up your arsenal, firepower and the capacity to support your fleet. Awesome feeling. :)
2) Lots of interesting concepts, boarding, resource harvesting, different kinds of weapons to counter different enemies. Really enjoyed different weapons, upgrades, ship types, keeping civilians in cargo holds (then performing a crew transfer to abandoned/disabled ships) and the ability build up my fleet. :D
3) Lots of events, cool interactions with other factions and even within your own fleet. I like how as your fleet gets bigger coupled with a mix of different factions together, tensions begin building and technical problems arise. It really gives me the feeling (to point 1) that as I start accumulating a bigger fleet, the logistical and social challenges of being in space too long starts to kick in. :DD
What I did not enjoy
1) Overall, the difficulty curve is too high in its current state. The game is punishing with the reputation system, combat, resource gathering, fleet build-up and preparation for the final sector. The slightest mistake may force you to restart midway through the game. Some examples:
- Had a Imperial strike force jump in, dived straight for my convoy of civilian ships, began blasting missiles and boarding parties everywhere. Before my military ships could blast the enemy ships down, they had already disabled a bunch of civilian ships, some of which were important 'farmships' which essentially rendered my fleet inoperable at that stage of the game. Furthermore, my reputation plummeted due to disabling/destroying my ships so all the factions were hostile to me after...
- Was friendly with most factions, game was going well. Made 1 slip with choices causing the Irenic to have negative reputations towards me. Jumped to the sector gateway controlled by Irenic. They hailed me and said that my reign of terror must end. Charges towards my fleet of military ships in which my main battleship was low hp from previous engagements. Main battleship got destroyed almost instantly... :'(
2) Unable to explore the unique concepts offered due to time constraints from the Harvesters.
- There's a lot of ship types, weapon systems, upgrades, etc that the game provides which I enjoy exploring and trying. But most times, I'm rushing to quickly try and complete quests, plot jumps, sort ships, gather resources, transfer crew to new ships, defending against enemy ships to be able to fully appreciate all these content.
- While I enjoy new content being added, it can't replace the Harvesters arriving too quickly before I have the chance to explore all these. Also, I don't get access to some interesting ships/abilities until the late game where its too late to really maximize the use of these additional utilities. At this stage, with me barely supporting the fleet coupled with facing some tough enemies and lack of resources, I don't have enough time to leverage my new ships/abilities to its full potential.
Random Misc (For Devs to fix)
1) There's a bug in a quest where the Rovers ask you to save their children and there's no other options to proceed. You only have the option to keep asking them about what's going on, and they tell you that the Empire's involved or something...
2) Sometimes, when you select the 'skip' conversation option when conversing with your 'Pact' folk at the first sector gate, the gate will still be locked permanently.
PS: I tried
- Jumping out and back into the system and even blowing up our own 'Pact' ally station but gate still locked which prevents you from continuing
- Came back after the Harvesters took over the system, blew up their station and gate still locked so yeah...
Some suggestions could be to put a difficulty bar which controls the speed of the Harvesters and the frequency of good events. Maybe also give the civilian ships more health and not 1 hp. That way, a single stray laser, missile or boarding party won't immediately disable half of the civilian flotilla and essentially forcing a restart.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with XO and may change my recommendation once further updates have been made to the game to address some of the points I listed above. Good game, nice concept and good sci-fi feel.
Lightweight game, heavy on concept, edge of your seat action.
Pretty Fun and exciting , but ships will frequently turn away from the location you order them to before taking a wide arc (sometimes going the wrong way) , or you have to wrangle them with waypoint orders that frequently overshoot , this eventually gets very annoying. Seems like there are things that need addressing. I can see in the forums they are being looked at. If you can put up with it , it gets pretty intense.
i like how you can have as many ships that you can support. I dont like the random enemies that appear in allied territory
Battlestar Galactica the game. I love the constant idea of being on the run which this game provides, and who the moment you think you're safe everything goes wrong. Don't play this game if you have a short temper, and be okay to lose. It's all in the fun.
Great game, you can tell how much of a passion project this is for the dev, highly recommend to anyone who likes fleet based games, it scratches those itches that few other titles manage.
So much fun even at this stage. FTL and BSG (Episode "33") had a baby and boom this is it. The Dev team (and big boss man himself ) is actively reacting and responding in Discord. Look forward to the new patches as the game adds sectors and expands things out to flesh out the game. Got more then my money's worth thus far and and this feels like it's only started and will get better ;) for years.

Deserves that Early Access tag. Bugs are getting squished quickly, but playtesting is needed to find the rest... which is the whole point of EA.

Let me get this straight. We stole a booby trapped Farm ship from a band of Rover Pirates - who are allegedly our "allies", mind you. We accidentally detonated their first frigate, boarded the second with "diplomats", disabled the third, rescued their crew, fixed their disabled frigate using their own commandeered frigate, [b]put the rescued pirates in charge of the frigate we blew up in the first place[/b], and in response...
...The Rovers are no longer "allies". We're just "friends" now.
This game is a gem!
If you like FTL, chances are you'll love XO.
The balance isn't as perfect as in FTL, but it's not that far and it can still improve as this is Early Access.
The game is far more complex than FTL, because of 2 main factors:
- you have to manage a whole fleet
- the game is in real-time (you can pause fortunately)
It makes things a lot more interesting by generating situations where you have really hard choices to make.
The game is working quite nicely, I haven't noticed any bug so far and the tutorial is short and clear so you can start playing quite fast.

You know the feeling of collecting pokemons? You will get it here. Also, one hell of a risk vs reward game. Might be a little unbalanced in the final battle though.
Edit: the scenarios make little sense. NPCs behave erratically, following no logic what so ever, punishing you with malus relationship. You will feel cheated. Any game makes you feel cheated is not worth your time.
This game has a promising future but there are a few key issues at times. The updates do add more to the game and there is progress but it kinda feels as if you are stuck babysitting the most incompetent people in the entire galaxy. The factions you have to deal with apart from the harvesters make you question if whether or not you should actively cheer on the destruction of the entire galaxy or prevent it.
I would hold off on buying the game right now until they release more patches on the factions to make them follow more logical reasoning instead of the "Oh no you didn't bend over backwards to help me at the cost of your own well being?
That's it our entire petty and vindictive faction will now be hostile towards you from now on.".
Another big issue I have with the game is the lack of an in game encyclopedia on the start menu. There is no learning from whatever item you just grabbed and having any general idea how x and y work without having to go through it manually. Would be useful to know what stats also do on weapons and being able to read up on how each item works out of game instead of going through the tutorial again.
Tldr: Wait for more updates before buying the game.
XO is what happens when you slam Battlestar Galactica together with FTL. Good times, but mostly tears and hard decisions.
Simple but more complex then it looks. Generaly a fun game, good diversity and all that i liked about games like cutthroats or something mius pirates and free roam.
If you are far enough to see this review, trust the > 97% rating and buy the game already.

Есть небольшие придирки по поводу управления, но в целом игра доставляет, особенно при первом запуске.
Также хочу отметить абсолютно невыразительный лэйтгейм, видно, что механики для усложнения есть, но они абсолютно не откалиброваны и не выполняют поставленную перед ними задачу. Поэтому что в начале, что в конце сложность меняется незначительно.
По итогу игре не достаёт вариативности и сложности, но это все исправимо.
Really good game with lots of potential content and options to expand
I wasn't sure what to make of this one, but it has sunk it's teeth into me unlike anything in a long while.
So many "yes Yes YES...NOOO!" moments. You spot that gunship, but the Harvestors show up and there's no time. You try to play nice guy, and you get water riots. ^#$^@* Corps ruin everything! Sometimes it even goes your way!
Haven't felt like I was up against such impossible odds since FTL on Hard, and I don't doubt it'll be just as satisfying to beat, eventually.

Start again. Get weapons and military ships. Get large balanced fleet. Survive for 82 days and make way toward rendezvous point. Have a run in with 3 corp ships that decimates your military ships. Die
This game is addictive and well worth the money. It's early access so there are some rough edges (the fleet management gets tiresome when your fleet gets large enough).
It's the spiritual successor to FTL if ever there was one. Highly recommended.
Fantastic game with loads of potential. Pretty much choose-your-own-Battlestar Galactica. Given it's in Early Access, it does have some bugs and issues with bogging down, but restarting the game always seems to do the trick. Plenty of content already, but I'm looking forward to how the game develops over time.
Since the new update, it's way better. It was great before, but they have really out did themselves. Can't wait for future updates!
Fun game, new style and systems, like the graphics and ship designs. Developer is super responsive to bugs. It is a fresh style on roguelike where timing, planning and being proactive really matter. Really excited to see where the game is going and the developers genuinely care about the experience players are having.
This game is a great buy for $14 and even better if you catch it on sale. The games plot is pretty simple collect ships and get to the end while outrunning your pursuers. You will lose your first couple times and that's okay you gotta get used to making the decisions on which ships you can bring with you, and sometimes the best option is to jump in look around and leave.
The game gives you a great Battlestar Galactica vibe when your playing it.
Overall the game is great for the price and I'm looking forward to updates as they come.
This is a strategy game in the very loosest sense of the word. It's seems to be trying to be a variation on the FTL formula yet lacks that "something" that makes FTL compulsive. I managed half an hour and pretty much got where the game was going in that time. Several more hours of this = nope.
The wire frame, vector graphics style is interesting and is a perfectly functional method of presenting this game. The game itself is mechanically sound as far as I could tell with my limited time playing it. It fails to provide enough of a hook to make me want to continue. There is an attempt to to build a story in front of you with factions, dialogue and a rudimentary diplomacy system. Yet the game doesn't really allow you the time to immerse yourself in it as you're forced to jump out of each system within a few minutes of jumping in. You are told about the pause system but not told the pause system is almost a necessity to even begin to get into the game.
Case in point, i'm given a mission to escort a group of scientists to the next system. Ok, I accept. I see another ship in the system yet by the time i've closed with it, hailed it and begun a dialogue, the scientists I spoke to not 2 minutes before cancel our deal in disgust for failing to escort them to the next system in the allotted time! 2 minutes, and that's being generous.
I cannot envision me playing a game like this to its conclusion as it feels like it is pushing you through it as fast as possible. I'd expect to only have to use pause to cope with complex tactical situations involving multiple ships. Not as a means to deal with basic interactions with in game entities like trade and other dialogues.
There's a potentially interesting game in here but it seems like it has an identity problem. What is it trying to be? FTL with bells and whistles? A saga of survival and sacrifice with an awkward "hurry up about it!" mechanic tacked on? I'm not sure and sadly for XO it doesn't pique my curiosity enough to stick around and find out. Game refunded.

Honestly I just tested the game and it is something BIG! I really like the granularity of your orders, the whole premise makes sense. Just the base mechanics are pretty cool and fun. The developers only have to build on that and this will be one of the best Battlestar-Galactica-esque games of all time.
Reminds me of BSG and its attached board game in all the right ways. There's definitely some quirks and design choices I don't necessarily agree with, but this is a well-crafted example of sci-fi done right and I can't wait to see more.
have been looking for a new sci-fi ship game for a while and this one is pretty fun and easy to kill time with. not gonna lie, the game is like ftl but way harder in its own right.
Early Access sometimes means full of bugs, and that's true here: but the gameplay makes up for it. At least if you like being the admiral of a ragtag fleet of starships. I only expect this game to improve with time and updates. Good luck devs!

longer than FTL, but the hard choices and management that I loved about
FTL is all there. Seems like there is alot more planned from the devs too.
i love it so far and enjoy the fleet aspect of it immensely and i can't wait to see what they'll add next to it
If you ever wanted to play a game that captures the tension of that
Battlestar Galactica episode "33" this game totally does it. The
decisions you are forced to make along the way are genuinely hard and
the pressure to keep moving is intense. Each quest you taking on is like
a super tiny BSG episode. Some of the writing is quite funny, others are
very human. Its not like anything really I have ever played, definite
recommend.
10/10 would obliterate harvesters again. srsly fun game, looks easy but in my few runs so far it is a challenge. tron-like art style is great, music is great.

I've been looking for a game like this for a long time. XO, as you might imagine, has serious Battestar Galactica vibes, as you collect a ragtag fleet of ships from different factions, deal with political upheaval in the fleet, and fight against a near-unbeatable enemy force. Its a hard task, and a very hard game that's difficulty only adds to the enjoyability!
Theres a lot to love about this game via its story, management mechanics, and concept. Furthermore, although the game is very playable in its current state, it is still a work in progress! The Game developer is extremely friendly, open to suggestions, and available via Discord, something that I really believe is important. 10/10 worth it
This game is effectively a larger-scale 3D version of FTL: Faster than Light. Like FTL, you start out with the bare minimum and must reach a particular destination while being pursued by a relentless enemy.
Unlike FTL, you can (and are heavily encouraged to) build up a fleet consisting of anything from warships to food factory ships. That leads into logistical issues that FLT doesn't have - you also have to manage water supplies among your fleet to prevent riots breaking out, and your fleet may be comprised of ships from five factions that do not like each other.
Definitely worth buying.
This is the best little space indie you'll find on Steam.
Extremely playable even in early access.
XO is a great blend of broad sci-fi inspirations combined into something unique and compelling. The game mechanics are easy to learn, and they create a great framework for the tactics and drama of the game. The game can be played through several times, because the smaller random encounters will change your fleet and it's story, politics, and tactics in different ways each time you play.
The wider story advances towards an inevitable end, ready or not.
It's a great Space Opera.
The game is superb. This is what i have been waiting for. A space voyage with a time crunch, forcing you to leave friends in need and sacrifice valuable ships to get away from an overwhelming number of forces that just want you to die.
great example of less is more. still some bugs, the final battle my fleet went haywire and started suciding in to the enemy lines instead of attacking. a bit aggrevating when you have a fleet that could win. but its easy and fast to start run number 3 and not encounter the same problem. great for the price.
challenging game, with unique turns of politics. Alot of challenges and learning curve that give days of game play. Pretty good for a strategic game :)

hi since my last review i had decided to recheck the game,
unfortunately there's a bug preventing me from playing the game, whereby when i click start new game, the game will simply just crash.
i tried to click the pinned discord invite link but it states that it is expired so i decide to leave this review here as a notice about the game breaking bug
its a really good game, but since its currently unplayable i will have to not recommend the game to others as i feel its only fair to others that way, once the issue has been solved, i will update the review back to recommended.
If you loved FTL, you'll love expanding your fleet as you escape the alien menace in the hopes to fight back, all the while managing inter-faction relations within your scrappy little armada.
I must say that I love concept of this game. And quite like the execution. Tho sadly I must say that this game have little problems with balancing where single bad decision may destroy your fleet it is still worth playing.

Game is good for some short gaming sessions.
Obviously needs some work, but for in EA game, it's okay for the price.
I've been following this game for a long time but someone missed that it released on Steam! It's a combination of Battlestar Galactica and FTL; I love it so much. I've had two sessions where i played for 2 and 4 hours respectively and didn't even notice that i had been playing it that long. It's really good. The only concern i may have right now is that some of the events are getting a bit repetitve, but i have full confidence that will be rectified through Early Access.
Been watching this one for a long time and now I have had a chance to play it delivers. A lot of comparisons to be made to FTL here but without the power management [at least so far]. Instead of one ship you are commanding a bunch of ships. The story feels deeper than FTL, especially the decisions feel more real than FTL. There is some surprisingly deep gameplay to be had here.
After you play a few times the beginning is a little slow and repetitive and I would like to see an option where you can start with maybe a small fleet but I trust the devs will get to that. Once you get a fleet rolling there is a lot to do.
Overall, a Super game.
So, I saw this game ages ago on Many a True Nerd's channel and thought it looked cool and picked it up just to see if it was fun to actually play with the idea I could just refund it if I didn't like it. well I got sucked in. I sat down for a look before making dinner and 2 hours later my partner came in asking when dinner was going to be read. I had completely lost track of time.
It is an interesting take on the FTL concept with a focus on political factions in a divided failing universe being hounded by the an unknown force called the Harvesters. The game play I interesting with some fun orbital physics as you battle against time to rescue and mediate with all those in your path trying to get to the safe haven away from the Harvesters.
The look is fun, very 80's space movie wire frame I thought it would get annoying but the clear colours and designs of the ships make it clear what is going on ant any time.
Looking forward to seeing how the development will go. In its current state there is a full game here. Some minor things have annoyed me like the way 'formations' are unclear as to if your ships are going to move to the potions you have selected but I'm sure that will be cleared up in later updates.
I havent had too much time to play, however everything for a good roguelike experience is there, and IMO has alot of potential. Encounters are interesting, the art style and the inclusion of orbital mechanics really gives the game a unique flavor, and combat is pretty cool as well
