Most of the mysteries don't have enough branches to fit together well as modular building blocks in a run-based game, you're painfully powerless in the face of RNG, and the game left Early Access for a "1.0" that was still transparently missing content. After years of no news other than merch tie-ins, an impressive patch appears to finally be on the horizon... and I found myself charmed enough by my memories of World of Horror to revisit it.

As I said, there are real problems with the game, but I have so much fun inhabiting this evil little town that I can't stay angry at it. There's one particular mystery plotline (Bloody Brief of a Beckoning Bulletin) that's stuck with me for years, one achievement (Awoo!) that made me laugh out loud, and a lot of structural similarities to some of the tabletop roleplaying games I love the most. Is it wrong to say you love a game's vibes, even when you can point to its many mechanical flaws? I can forgive myself for it here.

Will definitely update this review when 1.2 hits.

Pretty with lackluster mechanics, runs feel or very easy or impossible, not enough plot or lore in general, everything feels swallow and without conection. The writen text is of very poor quality being both boring and short, most of the time you dont even read what is on your screen.
The game really feal like it should be re-written (hire someone who knows how to write for god sake), the vibe is there but there is no substance sadly. Go play cultist simulator or sunless skies/sea if you want a good horror roguelike

有一说一当我第一次接触这款迷人的类跑团游戏时，会让我想起《人格解体》或者DND跑团，同属于奇幻恐怖世界观下的洛夫克拉夫特式探险，而《恐怖的世界》相比于它们则另辟蹊径，采取了老式漫画风的诡异电视啸游戏的形式，指引着玩家探索这个怪诞诡异横行的恐怖世界，而最终的结果是迷途羔羊自取灭亡，还是发掘辛秘并驱逐上位者，那就对玩家的运气与操作提出了相当大的考验了。

仅以笔者从最初浅品的“血溅邪剪”谈起，毫无跑团经历的玩家初步上手本作，即便是面对的难度堪堪最基础而已，便足够手忙脚乱了，再加上最基础的教学扔到了“课外活动（正式游戏体验）”中是何意味啊？但对于《恐怖的世界》来讲确实是一个很好接触这个“世界”部分真相的方式：毕竟你的恐惧完全来源于未知的事件和怪物，而不是来自于一个用拳头和球棍就可以打趴下的小瘪三对吧？[spoiler] 啊？什么叫你有武士刀能刀刀精准暴击？不是鸽们[/spoiler]

好比在跑一次漫长的深度剧本杀，玩家通过不同难度下通过主动选卡和事件获取不同资源，并且不断收集5把“钥匙”进入封印邪神的灯塔直面恐惧。当然本作的克味与CRPG味相当之足，随着玩家逐步探索的过程中，根据不同属性和骰子投点都能产生意想不到的结果，进而走向不同的结局分支，从这一点上来看，《恐怖的世界》是一个将跑团和肉鸽深度结合的单机游戏（边怕边推完全流程之后倒是很希望制作者PEW继续更新了）。

单独拿出来本作的数值来看，其实更多的是在为CRPG的随机性服务，可以感受到《恐怖的世界》中充满了不确定触发的可能性，从这一点来看集中在玩家手里的每一份资源都相当宝贵，类似于一个鲷鱼烧的生命值加点往往能在最紧迫的时候救你一命，不管你是否乐意，触发负面事件的时候都得依靠自带的数值判定，或者实打实的资源管理储备脱离危险。

诚然运气固然重要，但是对于老练的攻略者来说并非没有应对之法。《恐怖的世界》中的结局依赖于一堆前置路线所触发，即想要触发对应结局，就拼命做前置任务，利用时间与次数的堆积完成全面收集，从这一点来看游戏的时间把握相当精妙，一次完整通关流程在1小时左右，每一局游戏都是一个又一个分散且几乎无关联的故事拼起来，按照灾厄的进度条确认游戏本身的进度，最后按故事进度结算各个结局。

游戏的流程通过灾厄串联起来，既紧凑又显得恐怖，目前主流媒体所展示的视频攻略主要是快速的skip选取，直接往对应结局奔去，而笔者真正上手时，遇见的裂口女，蕈人，鬼护士等怪物可谓是诡异至极，灵感取材自伊藤润二的漫画和H.P. Lovecraft混和世界观，其中有我们熟悉的下水道的美人鱼，也有邪恶的旧神眷属，大量的突脸杀和屏闪，对于玩家来说（新手难度）下仅凭大观园就能细品文字和剧情之间的恐怖，至于怪物？跑路or换血，找把武器也能试着一战。

无论从哪个角度来看，《恐怖的世界》都不像是一个恐怖冒险式RPG模拟，更像是带有一定的RPG要素的氛围模拟文字游戏，比较适合推荐给轻度游玩的玩家。

I really wanted to like this game man. The art and atmosphere is really good, but that's kind of this game's only draw. The gameplay is incredibly shallow.

Only 20 mysteries, which don't change at all between playthroughs, and you see 5 every run. On my 3rd run I got 3 repeat mysteries, meaning over half of my playthrough was exactly the same as before.

Combat is literally just you clicking the same three buttons every turn. Either dodge & attack (maybe prepare your attack too if you're feeling spicy!), or just attack.

The end of a run, the lighthouse, is also incredibly anticlimactic. There are "trials" that just check if certain stats are high enough, and if you fail you just take a little damage. This would be cool if it was buttering you up for a boss fight, but once you reach the top floor of the lighthouse the run just ends, a winner is you. It's like, "oh i'm done lol"

Maybe it's more interesting on a higher difficulty? I've only played Initiate. I just imagine the higher difficulties maybe needing you to click Rest a few more times though. I'm still beating my runs with a healthy margin of Doom leftover.

Something that might also be fixed by higher difficulty but I don't have the drive to bother finding out: Each mystery has multiple endings, but except in the tutorial I've never gotten any ending lower than Ending A. Which is so lame because I wasn't really trying at all. I just stumbled into the golden ending each time and it felt unearned.

I feel bad giving this a bad review, because the game is really pretty and the premise is excellent, but it just isn't worth $20.

Absolutely adoring the "Lovecraft meets Junji Ito" vibes of this little gem of a game. It is lowkey one of the very few horror games I manage to play without any kinds hiccups (I'm a coward, but that's a skill issue on my part). It's always fun to come back to it and mess around in the runs to see what can happen. Very much a die hard fan of the retro style of it too! Keep up the great work <3

트레일러를 보고 주온, 링, 착신아리, 기담, 학교괴담 같은 J괴담류 이야기를 기대하고 구매했는데, 실제로는 애초에 기획부터 조금 달랐네염.

트레일러만 보면 J호러를 표방하는 것 같은데, 막상 플레이해 보면 서양식 호러의 기운이 더 강하게 느껴집니다. 설명할 수 없는 이상현상 자체를 두려워하게 만들기보다는 이미 벌어진 위협을 제거하고 세계 멸망을 막아내야 하는 분위기에 더 가깝거든요. 러브크래프트를 유독 좋아하시는 건가 싶었더니, 애초에 이토 준지 + 러브크래프트에게 보내는 러브레터라고 써 있었던 점에서 1차 납득, 폴란드 개발자라는 점에서 2차 납득했습니다.

개인적으로는 좋아하는 요소들이라 상관없었지만 혹시 괴담류 특유의 분위기와 정해진 사건 순서, 연출을 따라가는 게임을 기대하고 구매하려는 분이 있다면 트레일러에 더해 상점 페이지 안내문까지 잘 읽고 구매하는 것을 추천드립니다~

시스템에 익숙해진 상태에서 이것저것 커스텀을 제대로 하지 않고 가면 펄프 크툴루 뺨치는 괴물 퇴치 게임처럼 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 아직까지는 이벤트 풀이 조금 적게 느껴짐...

몇 판 깨고 나서는 업데이트 전까지 창작마당에서 취향에 맞는 모드들 바르고 가시길.
잘 만든 겜이라 업데이트를 기다리게 되네요.

This is a really fun, creepy game with a cool aesthetic and some surprisingly deep strategy, with random roguelike elements that don't feel out of place in a world that's falling apart at the seams.

The roguelike parts add some replayability, which is why I was able to clock 20 hours in it, but unfortunately the game is designed around mysteries, which, once you've solved once, you already know how to solve in the future (and they're not really much of a "mystery" anymore once you've beaten them once). The idea of going around solving mysteries works really well with the overall idea of the game, but unfortunately not very well with the formula of a roguelike game that's meant to be endlessly replayable.

The random events that pop up as you play through are unexpectedly engaging, with the game borrowing the idea of skill checks from other RPG games like DND. You can often make choices in your playthrough depending on what skill checks you think your character is more likely to succeed on. Many of the outcomes do boil down to "take x amount of damage" but this is just how the world is designed, you're supposed to be desperately holding on to health and sanity as the world dies around you.

The combat in this game is the weakest part by far, there's very little to be engaged by. It's turn based, and you have many options to choose from, such as attacking, defending, dodging, etc. and you get to take multiple actions per turn as long as you have the stamina for it. But the enemies always do the same thing every turn, which is "do x amount of damage," so there's not really much decision making involved, you usually just find the best sequence for dealing with that specific enemy and then spam it until it's dead.

The game is definitely creepy, but I feel like it lacks the ability to be truly "scary." I think it might be another issue with the combat; the mysteries and creepy events build up a sense of tension, but then your encounters with enemies in this world essentially boil down to swinging away at a PNG until it falls over. I don't expect a fully animated cutscene for every combat encounter in an indie game like this, but it's certainly an area that could be improved upon.

Overall though, the game is incredibly fun despite these faults, and I look forward to playing any future updates to it.

I contracted, fought, and beat aplastic anemia whilst waiting for this game to be completed. That was five years ago.

To say I'm upset with the slow state of development is an understatement. At the same time, there's something about this game that I find highly enjoyable. The music, the art style, even the unique way the game works all scratch an itch that I can't find anywhere else. So much that I spent time actually writing a real review.

For a roguelite, it does rely heavily on RNG. I usually dislike this. It manages to do so in a way that is so utterly addicting, that every time I nearly ragequit, I found myself just starting a new run. There's an odd agency I don't normally feel with RNG heavy games. As you hunt achievements, you unlock new content and slowly find ways to make the unfairness feel manageable. A lot of the RNG luck isn’t even about beating the game itself so much as it is about landing some of the rarer achievements. In my head, that seems to make it a lot more acceptable to manage--I still feel genuine enjoyment when I finish a run even if I didn't achieve my goals, and there are many times I'm trying to achieve multiple in the same run. Keeping track of this is a game in and of itself, and if you enjoy games that require you to learn a lot of information to succeed, this one will please you a lot. In this, I feel it succeeds in its "roguelite" aesthetic.

It’s not TBOI, and the whole process is honestly a lot clunkier here. But the way achievement hunting works really pushes you to try things you otherwise wouldn’t. Unless you have serious issues with how the game actually plays, you can get a lot of hours out of it just trying to 100% the achievements and unlock everything. Without spoiling it, the reward for doing this is pretty awesome, and probably one of the best 100% completion rewards I've gotten from a game lol.

It's very fitting to the theme; an insurmountable task drives you into madness, and you somehow gain understanding beyond your initial comprehension. You go from having no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue what you are doing to beating the most obnoxious god, using the stupidest character, on the hardest difficulty. All so you can unlock a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrible backstory that doesn't even have an achievement attached to it (unlike others.) And it feels EUPHORIC. This game has wounded me cerebrally to the point the torture was exquisite.

I spent so many hours on this game that it would be ridiculous to not say it was worth the price I paid, even in the current state.

However, there are some pretty big cons I feel important to note:

- I listed this earlier as a positive, but it’s also a flaw. If you expect most of the content to be available right away, you’re going to be disappointed. You will sit thru some extremely enraging runs before you fully access the amount of strategy the game has. Guides will be similarly frustrating as what someone writing it may have unlocked will be different from you, unless the writer of the guide has the time to account for this. This game does not handhold, and it does it in the jankiest way possible.

- I love the cases individually, but the way they work during runs can be very ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
You have to solve five to get to the lighthouse. That's fine, right? NO. NO!!! Some cases completely isolate you from the rest of the game, which means you lose access to stores or areas you might normally rely on to manage your run. On top of that, and ESPECIALLY in some of these maps, some bosses are punishing enough that with a solid grasp of the meta it's easy to permanently write those cases off entirely. They are fun to play, don't get me wrong. But the nature of what I mentioned above makes it somewhat difficult to rectify in my head.

- I don’t want to call the game janky. I really don’t.
But some mechanics are so weirdly optimized that they actively discourage experimenting with characters, which is odd for a game that literally requires you to do so to unlock new content. Some characters have no perceivable advantage in the meta, even with highly specific strategies; the RNG dictates that often this is just not effective.

A lot of achievements can be completed much easier on a select amount of characters, and because min-maxing matters so much in an RNG heavy game there’s not much reason to use the weaker ones unless an achievement forces you to. There are some characters I have literally never played except once or twice because they are just so useless. So why are they there? It’s forgivable, but it becomes very obvious the more you play.

- The dev is notoriously bad at communication. To be fair, every time people start claiming the game is abandoned, an update eventually does happen. But the game still launched with unfinished content. Without Steam achievement integration, and seeing merch drops, even a Switch release while communication has been this sparse, I find this naturally frustrating. I genuinely feel a lot of the ire towards this dev would be lessened if he just sat down for five minutes and was earnest about the actual progress of the game, his goals, and what he realistically finds achievable. I don't believe he's trying to scam people, I just think he really misunderstood how EA should work--people expected a finished game by full release, not the almost-finished version we have and waiting games.

Telling people an update is coming March, then releasing an ANNOUNCEMENT a different March, does not do well for morale. At the same time, the game does seem like it’s nearing actual completion, so maybe this won’t matter as much in the long run.

There is a huge pro.

- You can pet the dog in the store. It's VERY important that you do this. Trust me.

Le jeu est très beau visuellement tout comme son inspiration direct qu'est "Spirale" de Junji Ito.
Cependant je n'ai pas trouvé le jeu intéressant outre mesure.
Le gameplay est répétitif déjà, le jeu te demande d'enquêter sur différents sujets et, soyons honnête l'enquête se résume à aller dans des lieux indiqués par le jeu et à recommencer le procédé. Narrativement parlant il n'y a rien que vous aller faire qui fera avancer l'enquête ni votre compréhension de celle ci. J'ai terminé les 5 enquête de base et j'avoue que je n'en ai pas fini une sans être frustré. J'aurai tellement aimé me rendre dans les lieux et qu'on me donne des éléments pour comprendre dans quel lieux je devrais ensuite me rendre pour faire avancer l'intrigue mais il ne s'agit pas du tout de ça ici.
Il s'agit en fait tout simplement d'événements tirés au hasard qui seront pour la plupart résolu par le hasard.

Donc on pourrait se dire que l'histoire est un prétexte pour le côté "rogue lite" du jeu, que finalement ce qui importe ce serait les combats à l'effigie d'un "slay the spire" par exemple. Ce n'est absolument pas le cas. Les combats sont tout aussi hasardeux et peu intérressant que le reste du jeu (même s'ils sont plus tactiques).

Dernier point "noir", le jeu ne fait pas peur...

Pour conclure je ne conseille pas ce jeu mis à part pour son esthétique très réussie.

If you want the best horror roguelike in the market this is it, the atmosphere and designs of the world are top notch and will have you feeling it at every encounter. This game basically incorporates ideas of Junji Ito and HP Lovecraft and makes a experience you can't find elsewhere. Gameplay wise is very in depth and it becomes a very skill and knowledge check dependent but with time you can get the hand on how to play around the mechanics. I highly recommend you try it out, it has become my favorite roguelike of all time since it's first launch. 11/10

for the first time i have beaten an old god and it honestly felt like the first time i saw a Call of Cthulu game end in a win
It was a tense nail biting experience ascending the lighthouse the first time i won the doom was at 98%.
it really felt like it took everything going right and a good bit of luck was what got me through it. So literally nailed the sort of feeling you want for the setting so well and now i see the first update and its not only got great mod support its also got a crazy amount of post launch content if i see this sort of thing continue the devs will always have me as a fan

One of the most unique gaming experiences I've ever had! the art style, music and presentation are stellar here, while also offering some of the most addicting rogue-lite gameplay.

I don't get this game. The art is cool, and the music is nice, but the gameplay is so boring. The game is also not very scary. I say it as someone who easily gets scared. Honestly, it might not just be for me.

Loved the game, been onboard since Early Access and... Nothing.
Two years of no updates. No fixes for broken missions or broken items.
Worst part? There's always a "soon".
If you play the game as is, it's fine.
If you're expecting fixes to weird bugs and sudden Doom gain? Keep waiting, maybe we'll get an update.
I'm honestly too depressed at the moment to get into real detail, when I feel better, I'll write it out.

im a total wimp when it comes to horror but i can stomach more of the psychological kind

I really have enjoyed playing WORLD OF HORROR, but in its current state [u] I cannot recommend [/u] anyone buy it (especially at list price, 20$).
If there are any updates or improvements to these issues, I would be so glad to change the review accordingly.

[*]There are a lot of mechanics in the game that are unfinished or unpolished.
[*]The most recent update was almost two years ago in March 2024, and longer for actual content/major updates. It doesn't seem like the game will get any more updates at this point.

[*]The art direction and music are wonderful, it's always a delight to the senses to play! With many palette options present, it's easy to give the game a fresh look, too.
[*]For fans of unfair roguelikes and turn-based combat, this game certainly scratches that itch quite well.
[*]There's compatibility with steam workshop and modding for community-made ideas--a lot of them are very good.

[h2] The Bad [/h2]

[*]The in-game tutorial doesn't effectively teach you about game mechanics. As a result, online guides or memorization are the most practical ways to understand and learn game mechanics--every loss can feel frustrating if you can't tell when a run was lost because of bad choices, missing info, or simply bad luck.
[*]The codex only functions as a progression + achievement tracker, having only names or titles of enemies/events/endings you have seen. Without any way to review game mechanics or stats in-game between runs, it's easy to forget about common pitfalls if you're new or have taken a break.
[*]Your runs are heavily affected by luck, whatever your skill: random events can cause stat loss (possibly a death), combat encounters (generally threatening), and DOOM accumulation (you instantly lose at 100%). Those mechanics aren't bad in a vacuum, but they are so common that getting a few too many of these events in a row can easily end a run.
[*]A roguelike where luck has such a big negative impact, whatever your skill, is just unsatisfying to play (even if it fits with the bleak setting).

[h2] Notes, Suggestions [/h2]

[*]One way to supplement the lack of tutorial is to improve how the codex is used. An "areas" tab could have a blurb about the area and actions, events, and locations you've seen (when starting a run, locations you select to see in each area already have good blurbs, just add them to the codex). Detail about events, mysteries, and enemies beyond the names/titles would also help a lot.
[*]Overall, improvement to hints, codex, and RNG tweaks are on my wishlist to improve the game experience without detracting from its tone or difficulty--investigation, unearthing secrets, & bleak scenarios are classics of a lovecraftian setting!
[*]Contrast it with a similar RNG-laden rogue(lite) that does hinting very well: Blue Prince! Although the game appears quite hands-off, its mechanics were clearly designed to encourage a slow investigation of its mysteries over many runs--basic game mechanics are clearly documented in game as you find them, so your notes can focus on collecting the (mostly useful) clues & hints that are hidden everywhere.

Incredible horror point and click RPG experience.

The only way you can find negatives in this game is if you're the kind of loser who gets upset about breaking a single player game's "balance" - you can just not do that thing if you need it to be harder. Or try hard.

이토 준지랑 러브크래프트를 믹스한 고전 호러 컨셉인 것도 그렇고 픽셀 풍 그래픽도 그렇고 매력적인 게임... 하지만 턴제를 좋아하더라도 계속 반복되는 짧은 플레이가 지루해지는 건 어쩔 수가 없다. 도전과제 깨는 걸 좋아하면 한 번쯤 해볼만 한 게임.

It pains me to write this review, because this game showed such promise. The art, the music, all of the different mystery scenarios are so good. It perfectly encapsulates Junji Ito's brand of horror in video game form. However, despite being out of early access, the game still feels very much unfinished, unbalanced, and lacking the overall polish of a complete product. There's also a lot of features that were promised in future updates but were never delivered on, and the developer seems to have gone completely radio silent for 2 years now.

I'm not going to hold out hope, but part of me is still holding out hope that the devs will one day return with the promised features from years ago. I'd love to be able to change this review to a more positive one.

honestly a waste of time. runs last upwards of an hour, and you will almost never die to a skill issue. the game is RNG. the end. rng the game.

endless random encounters with options, sometimes there's a "right answer", sometimes you choose it and fail the skill check anyway. -1 reason. +1% doom. chip damage that culminates to gaping wounds after you're 40 minutes into an unsalvageable run.

get hit. get a wound. spend money and accure doom to get it fixed, new status effect: "they did a bad job and next time you get hit you'll have another one". nice. fun game.

your weapon has a base hit chance of 76%. you increase it's hit chance by 20% and it still misses.

two endings to a mystery. fight a boss, or run away. what do you get for beating the boss? no, the question is what less do you lose. if you run, you lose 3 reason. if you fight the boss, you'll surely lose more. what's the incentive to even fight the boss?

the game is sooooo close. it's ALMOST there. it's 80% of the way there, and i really do like it. it's just so completely unsatisfying to play, unbalanced, and entirely dependent on RNG.

World of Horror blends Junji Ito–inspired art with turn-based roguelike gameplay to create an unsettling, slow-burn experience. The 1-bit visuals and creeping sound design do a great job of building dread. Runs can feel RNG-heavy, but that unpredictability fits the cosmic horror theme perfectly.

Incredibly hard and chaotic game. If you love Lovecraft and Japanese horror, this thing is a MASTERPIECE for you!

Шикарная игра, с прикольным механиками.
По сюжету нам предстоит играя за одного из персонажей (их тут достаточно) предотвратить пришествие одного из древних богов путем решения 5 дел "отравляющих город", их тут больше пяти, но не так много как хотелось бы, богов также на выбор немного к сожалению. У каждого дела есть ряд концовок, довольно интересных, но не всегда с очевидными путями получения. Также вот время прохождения дел могут произойти случайные события, исход которых зависит от ваших статов. В игре есть прокачка и каждый персонаж начинает со своим уровнем прокачки каждой характеристики, также у всех персонажей есть свои отличительные навыки. По мимо всего вышеописанного в начале игры мы выбираем предысторию, они могут быть как положительными, так и отрицаетльными, например: "все проверки характеристик всегда будут проваливаться".
В общем контента в игре хватает, но не то чтобы достаточно, о чем ниже.
Писать о плюсах можно еще много, но нужно сказать и о минусах, а точнее об одном самом главном, а именно о том, что игра заброшена разрабом, что очень печалит, так как много чего еще не закончено и не добавлено в игру, она чувствуется обрезанной, конечно и того что есть с лихвой хватит, чтобы засесть на десятки часов, но неоконченность ощущается.
Тем не менее я получил невероятный кайф при прохождении игры, и поэтому не могу не рекомендовать её к приобретению, хотя бы по скидке, а разраба призываю доделать проект (понимаю что не буду услышан). ▼•ᴥ•▼

Don't let the other reviews mislead you. There's 10+ hours of gameplay here unless you immediately jump into the game with some sort of a guide to lead you by the nose. And even then, it would take a while given the RNG. I think there was an expectation of a greater scope for the game by others, myself included. But even given that it's development has effectively grinded to a non-existent crawl, the juice is worth the squeeze. What's there is still a complete experience for the price.

It's greatest problem is you'll like it so much, that it leaves you wanting more, which is a great problem to have if you must have one.
