Weird game, but in a quirky kind of way. I'm not Italian, so much of the dialogue failed to resonate with me. I just don't know much about the era being referenced. That said, if this is your kind of game, then I recommend it. You very much can alter the outcomes. I got all the endings. It's basically a choose your own adventure game with some sections that you can control via driving inputs.

On the one hand, this is presented well. The graphical style brings the baking heat and style of Italy to your screen., the music is bold and enjoyable but for me, that was about it.

Perhaps if I was more interested in late-70's Italian cultural movements, there might have been more for me here, but I'm not and there isn't.
Also that there is no control (that I know of) to confirm your dialogue choice instead of letting it time out, seems a curious choice and lets the conversations drift slowly instead of happen naturally.

Worth a try though.

I have some mix feelings about Wheels of Aurelia. On one hand I truly love the setting, the concept, and the artstile of the game; a visual novel mixed with a driving game set in 70s Italy. The game portraits the time are well, allowing the player to jump fifty years in the past and learn a lot about the old country. On the other hand, the sixteen different endings feel a bit rushed and arbitrary, leading to some half-baked runs. I would still recommend buying Wheels of Aurelia, perhaps during sales when the title is often sold for peanuts.

Соглашусь с комментариями, это не совсем игра, а арт-проект:
- управление машиной на дороге не может привести к аварии, можно даже не рулить
- диалоги жестко заскриптованы
- сами диалоги не то чтобы увлекательные
- чтобы получить все концовки, надо прослушать несколько десятков раз все диалоги, и методом подбора, выйти на задумку авторов. Проще использовать прохождение.

Maybe this game is for someone but that game isn't for me. I found there to be a great disconnect in the gameplay and the story.

On one hand I wanted to be invested in the characters and their conversations, but found myself struggling with driving the car, without crashing with a pregnant woman in the backseat.
I like the idea of a 70s Italian road trip where you pick up hitchhikers along the way, listen to their stories where they provide insights into the main 2 characters. But the gameplay wasn't very intuitive in telling me how to drop off the hitchhikers at the right stops.
The 2d art is good but is contrasted by the 3d backdrop which felt very random and mostly disconnected from the story.
The dialogue only gives you 2 options per talking point, and felt suddenly dramatic often. But this might just be a cultural difference.

For roughly 30 minutes of gameplay for one of the 'endings' I don't see myself going back and finishing the others.

I've got two endings and I don't feel any motivation to go back. The characters feel one dimensional - as a lot of people have said here, there are interesting topics to be discussed and the setting is very original, however it's mostly the same old surface level feminist statements thrown out time and again. 'Why can't a woman be an F1 driver?' 'Why do we need men?' 'I'll have kids when men are not needed'. You just skip from one statement to another without really delving into anything or revealing anything new. You CAN do feminist themes well, but these characters are badly written stereotypes, or indeed BARELY written. Even the conversations about the politics of the day are just 'mention this thing' and move on. A little icon appears to say someone mentioned it. It's a tick list and not a conversation.

Why not have one long road trip story, but a good one? You have a character who was previously kidnapped and a woman thinking of having an abortion in a great setting. It was made to be a Thelma and Louise style long/exciting/heart warming road trip. At 10-15 minutes per playthrough there is not time to bond with anyone, and especially not to have any of the men that want to race you etc be anything but cartoon villains. I almost got whiplash on my first playthrough when it abruptly ended and a text message told me the girl I was travelling with sold me out to the paparazzi, and that I had got blown up a bit later. What??!

The conversation mechanics are clunky, making you wait to say everything, and the driving doesn't feel like the car is on the road at all. You play for ten minutes, make lots of random statements, pick up different hitch hikers (or not), take a turning (or not) and then you're presented with two walls of text telling you what happened. Start again for a possible new ending.

It's a shame as this setting has real potential and I would love to see another game do this better. The music (the menu and credits music at least) is great by the way.

The gameplay is inexistent, it's basically a visual novel with dialogue options and each story last 20min with 16 endings.
I personally think the story are really bland, some dialogues here and there talk about very important stuff but it's only here so you don't get bored until the ending. The endings now are quite catchy with an explanation on what happened during your playthrough but I do not believe that's enough for me to recommend it.

Wheels of Aurelia es un curioso juego que combina dos géneros muy diferentes, por un lado es un juego conversacional o text-based y por otro es un juego de conducción. La protagonista es Lella, una joven italiana con un pasado turbulento, con una personalidad rebelde y descarada y un objetivo en mente, la venganza. Los motivos irán siendo revelados durante nuestro viaje a medida que vayamos conversando con los diferentes pasajeros que nos acompañen.

[h2]Jugabilidad / Apartado técnico[/h2]
Respecto a la parte conversacional, mientras conducimos iremos dialogando con nuestro copiloto, ya sea nuestra amiga Olga o cualquier otro personaje secundario o autoestopista que vayamos recogiendo por el camino. En estas conversaciones podremos elegir casi siempre entre dos opciones o permanecer en silencio.
Por otro lado, la parte de conducción parece más bien el objetivo secundario del juego, ya que aunque pasamos el 90% del tiempo conduciendo se siente muy pobre, poco pulida y tosca. Podemos acelerar e intentar controlar el vehículo o simplemente soltar el mando y que el juego nos lleve.
El objetivo del juego es por tanto conducir por una carretera esquivando coches, mientras conversamos con otro personaje, pudiendo elegir líneas de diálogo o tomar decisiones que varíen el final del juego y desbloqueen nuevos vehículos.

[h2]Valoración[/h2]
La razón por la que no recomiendo Wheels of Aurelia es que, a pesar de que me gusta darle una oportunidad a casi cualquier juego, este se siente simplemente, aburrido. Como he dicho la conducción es básica y sin alicientes y las conversaciones, aunque no están mal, pueden hacerse muy repetitivas si queremos obtener todos los finales, ya que tendremos que pasar por la misma charla una y otra vez, variando una pequeña acción para que el final cambie. Completar el juego al 100% me ha llevado algo menos de 5 horas.
Hubiese sido preferible que los finales estuviesen conectados, para ir desvelando una historia central, pero no, cada final es totalmente diferente fruto de nuestras elecciones. Por otro lado considero que es un juego de nicho, con un público muy concreto haciendo alusión a eventos políticos y sociales que ocurrieron en Italia durante los 70-80. También se tocan temas controvertidos, como la religión, el aborto, el terrorismo y como he mencionado, la política. Esto no es para nada un problema, pero por su puesto acota el público al que puede interesarle, siendo mucho más adulto.
En definitiva, un juego interesante, pero poco entretenido a mi parecer, que tiene un público muy acotado tanto por la temática, como por el género.
No lo salvaría en un incendio 👨‍🚒👎🔥

PREFACE: got this as part of Jingle Jam 2021! it was fun as part of the bundle but I doubt the full price is worth it, but your choice! just figured I'd clarify, though I don't know how many will see this after all this time. The rest of this review is left unchanged from when I submitted it in december 2023 at 3.9 hours recorded :D

lot of replayablity, and the story is really interesting! Every missed dialogue option makes me want to dedicate the next playthrough going down that route instead, to see what the characters will say and what might happen. Just check the achievements for all those different possible endings! For instance (mild spoiler) [spoiler] one of the hitchhikers you pick up turns out to be a terrorist, and if you pry too much into their story, they will threaten you with a gun, which can end... interestingly. [/spoiler] All of the endings feature little epilogues letting us know how the characters end up, some do seem a little surprising and sometimes I do feel a little railroaded but you can speed up cutscenes you've already seen by holding down enter/space, so repeating storylines isn't too bad. Overall, a casual game to play if you've got a little time to burn learning about interesting characters and 1978 Italy :D

No creo que merezca reviews tan malas este juego.

La conducción es bastante mínima y es más una excusa para lo que es el resto del juego. Básicamente es una aventura (o aventuras) simple, con entradas históricas de relativo interés. El gameplay que es poco se mueve entre conducir y prestar atención a los diálogos, tratando de conocer mejor a los personajes, que igual tan profundos no son y en donde claramente se pueden leer los sesgos políticos y culturales de los autores (no hay mucho espacio al contraste de ideas), no por esto la narración es menos valida, solo es así. Eso sí, la música no está mal, y el arte gráfico es bien bonito.

No recomiendo comprarlo, pero si llega a tus manos, tampoco es que pierdas tu tiempo si juegas lo que dura, que puede ser media hora o el doble, incluso triple si decides intentarlo más veces. A mi me bastó con un par.

Cool artsy kinda game that would be great for the right audience.

I found it hard to follow due to the time-sensitive nature of dialogue options while focusing on driving, leading me to concentrate more on picking the right option than actually taking in what's being said so it personally doesn't work for me. Regardless, it's a very pretty game that brings up interesting topics alongside a bit of light gameplay and overall crafts a nice experience.

[*]There thankfully isn't any degradation system or the like for when you hit something with your car, etc.[/list]

[list][*]You can accelarate but not decelerate, which becomes pretty frustrating when you do get to a section where you're supposed to avoid crashes (which is pretty impossible, given that you're on a two-way road where your default speed is faster than the cars in front of you)
[*]The game's design rests upon repeat plays (there are supposedly 16 different endings you can get), but there's not enough variety or clear directions to incentivize or guide you to do much of that. I got 4 endings, but I kept having the same conversations, and often repeat the same endings, even when I tried to deviate. After a while, I just couldn't bother to keep going.[/list]

One thing I will say, that I imagine that games like this struggle with Steam's refund policy, so I'd recommend getting it on a sale if you're curious instead of buying it with a refund already in mind. Not that I can tell you what to do, it's your money, just a food for thought in case you want to support some indie devs.

This is a “choose your own adventure”-type book with a car driving mechanic. It takes place in 1978 Italy and focuses on a woman driving to France to confront her past. You can get different passengers and pick up different hitchhikers while making choices that have a real effect on the outcome. Because of this, there’s enough replay value to easily be worth the money.

Oh, and an open letter to that fascist prick in the game. I won that race, while driving a trike! I just went to a different town. I won, and don’t you forget it!

First and formost, Artstyle is amazing, the backgrounds and Characters have a style to them that I just love.I think it's style is something i'll go back to and remember fondly. The games soundtrack is nice and i think if I play more i will probably get sick of the music as there's not much there. The gameplay is kinda forgetable, while there's nice backgrounds and everything it's very clear to me that this game is more focus on the story they want you to experience rather than it's gameplay. Thus leading me to my final point the story: For me it seems there's a lot of information the game doesn't tell you unless you read it's wikipedia and being in a game where it only has three or so stages per route, makes it all the more difficult to care for the characters and understand their backstory.

A mediocre hybrid of visual novel and driving game that just kinda sucks at both. A lot of the conversation and story events seem either incoherent or surface-level (although this could be a translation issue), and the driving has no brake button, but you move faster than the traffic by default, so if there happens to be a car in both lanes right as you're about to overtake, it basically forces a collision. Which I think the developers knew, because there are no consequences for collisions except for one specific route, and even on that route, your driving still counts as "careful" even if you crash like seven times.

The best part of this game is letting it drive itself and watching as Lella demonstrates herself to be the worst driver you have ever seen.

Still, if you have a few bucks to spare, this could keep you busy for a few... no, hang on, sorry. They're asking for HOW much? For THIS?

The games main challenge is driving and reading dialogue at the same time.

In Wheels of Aurelia you drive through the streets of Aurelia (somewhere in Italy I guess) on your way to france.

The car drives and follows the street automatically. The only thing you must do is dodge and overtake other cars and choose wether to give some extra gas. There are some events in which you need to follow a car or win a street race, but they weren't as specular as they could've been.

On your way you can take different people with you and talk to them. They will either tell you something about certain local events which sound like they could really happened in 1978 - but to really understand it, you would probably need some more background information about 1970's Italy - tell you about themselves or ask you questions about yourself. You can often choose between two answers or not answering at all. While the answers don't seem that different at first glance they seem to have a big impact on the development of the 20 minute long experience.

The game features 16 different endings, depending on wether you decide to drive left or right a few times and whether and how you talk with your passengers.

Unfortunately the 70's italian gossip didn't caught my attention and so the game ended up being a calm driving simulator through nice stylized streets while reading trivial dialogues.

What's also worth mentioning is the great progressive rock soundtrack, which fits very good to the 70's atmosphere (and to my taste). The game also offers different modes (i.e. visual filters) like a BW mode and a painted mode, which surprisingly got me to play the game some more times. That and the music.

Not much here... The "game" even has an achievement for completing it without touching the controls once, which to me just sounds and feels weird.
The graphics aren't really pretty. The sound and music are nothing special. The dialogue... it's there... although I don't think it is very interesting or important. Characters feel one dimentional. The gameplay is almost inconsequential. Sure it serves to make "choices" in a way, instead of just picking the option you want, but doesn't really feel needed or essential.
I just played long enough to get the steam cards. Can't recommend. Especially at 15€!

The game play is very simple and can be done one handed, what sets it apart is the enjoyable story, and with lots of endings there is replayability; However it can feel repetitive when trying to collect all achievements.
Although for a choose your own adventure game each playthrough is quick and you'll finish a story within an average of 20 minutes.

The story/writing is not that great, even though it feels like it should be the core of the game. Maybe it is a passover from translating the game.
Even though there are X amount of ending it feels very static, especially when encoutering the same limited dialouge options in each playthough.

The music is good, but it can feel very repetitive to listen to the same soundbite of music every time you encounter a cutsene-ish screen.
This is also true for the ending credit, of which you cannot skip. For a game where there are 17 ending, having to sit though the credits every time you finish af 15-20 min story, (that you may or may not have had end exactly the same way as before), this is just makes you want to alt-f4.

The driving in the game is very simple and fits the games aesthetic.
The art of the game is also fine.

Some people complain that there's no innovation in the AAA games anymore, just TPP loot crafting shooters with stealth elements. Well, on the other side we have Wheels of Aurelia that is trying super hard to look like nothing else, combining a racing game with visual novel. Too bad it fails at pretty much everything it tried to do.
We're a rebelious women that doesn't need no man, a feminist (or the one that only looks like one) that picks up another chick at the disco. Both then decide to have a long ride to France along the Via Aurelia road, having all kinds of topic to talk to - abortion, kidnappings, abortion, family issues, music, feminist movements, traditional values, abortion etc. If I'm being not clear enough, the game has a statement to make, and the year of the game isn't random. It encapsulates two main events from 1978 that have taken place in Italy - Moro kidnapping and legalisation of abortion. Both of these topics will be pretty much on our tongues no matter where we'll ride or what hitchhiker we take next. No matter what you'll get 'strong independent womyn' vibe from the protagonist, Lella, that is as rebelious as annoying. Every once in a while you'll have an option to pick up a topic for conversation or your passenger will ask you a question about another topic. These can then be answered in one of two ways, and it can be summarised by 'yes', or 'sarcastic yes'. Many topics present no real input on the conversation, your answers will always be in the spirit of the defined character, later even called a communist. Opinions of your character will always be skewed in one way - someone said something controversial and you want to disgree? Nope, you can either agree or say something mildly controversial too. Question about abortion is a prominent example - you can say it's either just a medical operation or it might be a traumatic experience. Other time you can say that men are no longer needed. The whole story feels like it's been written by a raging feminist who tried to put as many leftist ideas as possible. Later in the game (as 10 minutes later) you can ditch your friend for different kind of passenger, a priest or a has-been race driver, and these conversations aren't that bad, but first couple of runs you'll probably keep Olga till the end and you'll get sick of woke comments.
That one thing that is somewhat competent are splitting ways and different outcomes. You can change your destination by turning to different road, you can pick up hitchhikers that will give you optional dialogue options and sometimes can alter your ending (or drive them to different place they wanted), you can change your passenger in the city and alter some endings by dialogue options. The gameplay is pretty solid on paper too - at one point you can run away from the police, chase a terrorists car, enter the race in supercar or just drive recklessly to piss off your friend. All of these you can ultimately lose to get different ending. Finally there are some unlocks, as changing your car in story missions will let you choose that car in new game+. My complaint here is that motives and reasons for your passengers change as well. Nothing is set in stone. If you ignore one topic long enough it'll also rub on your friend, who will now either have different story to tell or will forget about given objective. Olga for example [spoiler]drives with you to catch a fascist terrorist with a gun, but if you miss him she'll sell you to the paparazzi, as you've been a victim of a kidnapping two years ago, all pregnancy and abortion topics eventually being just a void blabber[/spoiler]
Now all would be nice and dandy but the driving - essential element of racing game - is atrocious. You can turn left and right or speed up, but you can't slow down. Driving into oncoming traffic won't damage your car or other car, you'll just bounce a little. Driving into the side of the road will also bouce you a little, but your speed won't change. On another note the road is too narrow to not hit a curb here and there. Traffic on the road is another problem, as cars in front of you will drive slower than you. You're forced to overtake them but with oncoming traffic you'll be also forced into a crash. Another story is that you can even ingore all steering as your car will try to stay in the middle of the road on its own, taking nice turns on the curves. It will hit other cars and occasionally bump into the side but other than that you can ignore the driving part. I think it's a compromise between two types of gameplay mechanics - car will drive on its own for people who want to enjoy the story. Too bad anyone caring about driving physics will be annoyed, to say the least.
I'm not 100% disappointed with Wheels of Aurelia though, as it comes with a neat encyclopedia. Every time your conversation hit a specific name, event or place you'll get a new inscription explaining the meaning. These are all excerpts from Wikipedia though, so a minimal effort has been put there, yet I found these extra bits of information a true highlight of the game. Finally it's also interesting how many different events we can encounter in this game (where one full playthrough will end at 30 minutes max), from trailing someone to being chased, to driving through traffic recklessly, racing someone to win his car. Too bad all of that is locked inside this game. If you want to broaden your horizons or just drive casually through basic looking Unity game you might want to check this, otherwise you'll get offended it's being sold for money.

이 제작사 겜 스타일 좋아해서 겜 자체는 재밌게 했음 트레일러 한번 보고 작품 분위기가 취향된다 싶으면 도전해봐도 괜찮을듯..

I'm leaning slightly towards positive here because there is love in this game. Someone was trying to create something good, although I can't say that it worked very well for myself. I guess I can recommend it to people who want a gamified version of a Wikipedia spree on Italian politics and society of the 70'ies and 80'ies, or want to experience nostalgia for the region and/or era.

The driving is very basic and not very well programmed. I found it mostly just mildly annoying while trying to read and choose dialogue options, though it can be sort of fun to just crash into everything... "Dialogues" are limited to very short exchanges that keep popping up randomly, sometimes repeatedly or out of synch with the story progress, and are abandoned when you pick up a hitchhiker.
The endings seemed pretty random to me as well, with oddly specific details considering the characters aren't supposed to be based on real persons and I never got to know them well.
One playthrough should take around 15-20 minutes. You're supposed to do lots of them, but you can't skip the cut scenes or credits.

The menu looks neat and has some nice extras. You build up a "Wheelipedia" of topics that come up during playthroughs, with excerpts from Wikipedia articles on places, persons and topics of interest for that time in Italy. You can also gradually unlock more cars in different colours, a few "modes", and a map.

Overall, I didn't really enjoy this game much unfortunately. I'm not very interested in Italy or cars, though, so part of it is certainly my own fault. I was hoping for some kind of exploration of a strong female character or two in that kind of setting and time, and I was disappointed by the storytelling. It is an interestingly different game, though, and I do appreciate the effort.

Pourtant très friande des light novel et jeux avec vraiment peu (voire pas de gameplay), je me suis ennuyée. J'ai même failli m'endormir devant mon écran en voyant où le jeu pouvait m'emmener sans toucher à mon clavier.
On peut contrôler comme ne pas contrôler la voiture, ça n'a aucune incidence (sauf pour certains succès), la route et les décors sont... meh, l'ambiance pas ce à quoi je m'attendais et les personnages manque de profondeur (purement subjectif).

Je n'ai pas réussi à me mettre dans le jeu et pourtant j'ai essayé.

Wheels of Aurelia se anuncia como un "road trip interactivo", sin embargo las oportunidades de interacción son muy escasas. La historia es poco coherente, hasta contradictoria según se tomen los distintos caminos (¿querés conocer más sobre el trasfondo de este personaje? sería una pena que te cuente algo totalmente inconexo a lo que te contó en tu partida anterior sólo por girar en un desvío que antes no tomaste), y su duración es sumamente corta. Finalmente, el aspecto relacionado a la conducción es meramente anecdótico; la mayor parte del tiempo estaremos esperando a que terminen los aburridos diálogos.

Совершенно бездарная игра. Механика управления тачкой оставляет желать лучшего, истории неинтересные и скучные, иногда вопросы несвязные друг с другом и совершенно нелогичные. Ольгу, твою мать, хочется выбросить на первой же остановке, настолько она недалекая, глупая и этим раздражающая.
Музыку 70-х еще кое-как можно принять, она клевая, но не в этой игре. В ней она вообще неорганична из-за деревянности персонажей и их "анимации", если так вообще можно это назвать.
Хотя, чего я распинаюсь, - купите по скидке эту игру за 25 рублей и вы поймете, что никаких 250-ти она не стоит и внимания особо не заслуживает.

This was so disappointing. The driving mechanics were so shoddy and basic. The dialogue was a mess and occasionally the response options made no sense based off the running conversation. I felt like so much more (history, the scenery, political context, deeper backstory, etc.) could've been explored with the dialogue, but wasn't. The only good thing was the music, and even that was mediocre.

This is not a game. It's a visual novel, with somewhat mature topics. (TL;DR: read the last paragraph in my review.)

If you are curious about the driving sections... They are extremely basic, they're just a mildly interactive background scenario for dialog choices.

In this visual novel, you have the following kinds of control:
* Pick which car you want to start with.
* Pick one of three dialog options when asked. (Or don't pick one, and go with the default answer.)
* Choose between stopping to give a ride to hitchhikers.
* Choose between going left or right in the very few road bifurcations.
* And very basic car controls: button to go faster, or no button to auto-drive slower; and steering the car slightly.

That's all of the interaction you have in this visual novel. From those combinations, you can get one of the 16 endings. You will need a guide if you want to unlock them all.

And now, these are all the cons for this visual novel:
- The digital D-Pad from your gamepad does not work in the driving sections, even though it works in all the menus. You have to steer using the analog stick.
- The game doesn't work properly if your LCD display is pivoted to portrait mode. Fortunately, you can pass Unity command-line parameters to force a resolution in windowed mode.
- The game doesn't have any way to disable the "depth-of-field" blur effect. The graphics are so basic (in "low" mode) they can run on almost any machine, but I'd enjoy disabling it to let my laptop run it a bit cooler.
- There is no way to skip the opening credits cutscene, you have to sit through that for a couple of minutes at least once. Feels like a movie; wait, I can fast-forward a movie... On the bright side, on subsequent playthroughs you can start at a point after these credits.
- There is no way to see all the dialog choices at once. You can only see one dialog choice, and you pressa a button to see the next one. You can practice a little memorization.
- There is no way to skip already seen dialog. This is a visual novel, not a game, and the authors thought the dialog was way too important. On the bright side, in the intermissions, you can at least make the dialog move faster.
- There is no way to go quicker in the very long and unremarkable driving sections. For each one, prepare to spend several minutes just picking dialog choices and doing very minor driving.

Overall, if you are looking forward to a visual novel, this can be interesting (although most visual novels actually provide arbitrary save points and skippable dialog; this one doesn't). If you are looking for a driving game, go look somewhere else.

Gostei bastante do jogo, ele é bem curto, o jogo no total possui 16 finais. ele é um jogo de visual-novel misturado com corrida, poderia ter mais opção de escolha sim, mas são tantos finais que você até se perde nas escolhas, tem tradução e a trilha sonora é bem boa e agradável, poderia ser melhor mas esta ótimo pelo preço baixo que paguei na steam, voltaria a jogar qualquer hora sem duvidas !

O historii Włoch wiem niewiele. Nigdy nie interesował mnie ten kraj, nawet pod względem turystycznym, więc po prostu nie czułam potrzeby czytania o jego dziejach na przestrzeni lat. Wheels of Aurelia, niezwykle krótką grę od mediolańskiego studia Santa Ragione, możemy potraktować jako komentarz polityczny do sytuacji we Włoszech w latach 70. ubiegłego wieku. O tej powieści wizualnej postanowiłam napisać głównie dlatego, że jest obecnie do pobrania za darmo na Epic Games Store (do 23 kwietnia), a w mojej bibliotece Steam zalegała od dość dawna. Była to dobra okazja do tego, by pozbyć się kolejnej pozycji "do ogrania" i sprawdzić, czy warto polecić ją osobom posiadającym konto na platformie konkurującej z większymi od siebie graczami, zwłaszcza GOG.com i Steam. Niestety, zamiast zaciekawienia odczuwałam głównie znużenie, choć nie jest to wina bohaterów przedstawionych w Wheels of Aurelia, tylko sposobu zaserwowania historii i licznych logicznych wpadek.

Chcąc mniej więcej wiedzieć, wokół jakich tematów krąży omawiana produkcja, wystarczy przeczytać trzy pierwsze akapity podrozdziału o Republice Włoskiej [url=https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historia_W%C5%82och#Republika_W%C5%82oska]w jednym z artykułów[/url] na Wkipedii. Twórcy sami postanowili posiłkować się tym źródłem w wersji anglojęzycznej (do wyboru jest jeszcze kilka innych języków w ustawieniach) i stworzyli wewnątrz gry [i]Wheelspedię[/i], czyli zbiór zagadnień pojawiających się w grze. Nie są to zredagowane i skrócone przez nich publikacje, tylko skopiowane fragmenty z linkiem do pełnego artykułu. Jeżeli w dialogu będzie mowa o Aldo Moro (mamy pełne prawo nie wiedzieć, kim była ta postać, zresztą historyczna), to krótkie wyjaśnienie znajdziemy właśnie w tej zakładce. To samo dotyczy Czerwonych Brygad, filmu "Ecce bombo", koncernu Fiat, paru włoskich miast i wielu innych osób oraz miejsc i wydarzeń. Wheels of Aurelia jako lekcję historii oceniłabym wysoko, bo doceniam wykorzystanie gier jako medium do przekazania wartościowych treści.

Główną bohaterką powieści wizualnej jest tajemnicza Lella. Tajemnicza, bo niewiele się o niej dowiadujemy. Poznajemy ją w momencie, gdy udaje się na imprezę do klubu, w którym poznaje Olgę, kobietę w zbliżonym do swojego wieku. Olga staje się towarzyszką podróży Lelli. Celem koleżanek jest dotarcie do Nicei, miasta położonego w południowej Francji i około dwudziestu kilometrów od granicy z Włochami. Motywacje obu znajomych są różne. Lella poszukuje zemsty na swoim dawnym oprawcy, a Olga planuje znaleźć w sąsiednim kraju klinikę aborcyjną. Jednak do Nicei nie docieramy wspólnie z bohaterkami, ponieważ jedna rozgrywka pokrywa wycinek trasy o nazwie Via Aurelia, starożytną rzymską drogę łączącą Rzym z Pizą. Jak przystało na powieść wizualną, w grze dominują dialogi wyświetlane przy zilustrowanych wizerunkach bohaterek. Gracz wybiera jedną z dwóch opcji dialogowych, jaką ma wypowiedzieć Lella, przez co niejako kształtuje jej osobowość. To głównie te zdania decydują o tym, jak zakończy się podróż, a zakończeń jest aż szesnaście. W tle odbiorca stale śledzi samochód prowadzony przez Lellę i przewijające się włoskie krajobrazy. Chociaż zaczyna się od dość powolnego modelu auta, podwożenie autostopowiczów odblokowuje kolejne pojazdy (szczególnie przyda się to osobom chcącym odblokować wszystkie możliwe epilogi). Uproszczona kontrola nad jazdą obejmuje poruszanie się na lewo i prawo oraz przyśpieszanie Spacją. Równie dobrze można zignorować tę część, jako że auto porusza się samoistnie, i skupić się na rozmowach.

Wheels of Aurelia podejmuje trudne tematy. Niechciane ciąże, porwania i realne zagrożenia życia. Robi to jednak w dość niezręczny i mało naturalny sposób. Ni z gruszki, ni z pietruszki Lella albo Olga informują się nawzajem o czymś istotnym, ale powaga ich słów umyka przez niski poziom empatii względem siebie i monotonne tło. W pewnym momencie Lella postanawia podążać za pomarańczowym samochodem należącym do przestępców, a Olga nakazuje jej zatrzymać się obok autostopowicza i zaproponować mu podwózkę. Na innym przystanku Olgę można całkowicie zostawić samej sobie (ciężarną, w nieznanym mieście) i zgarnąć byłego wyścigowca, który wykorzystuje Lellę do napadu na bank. Sami autostopowicze nie wnoszą do gry nic, nie licząc możliwości odblokowania kilku pojęć w Wheelspedii. Nie do końca odczytałam też poziom relacji łączącej Lellę z Olgą. Niby znają się krótko, ale wymagają od siebie tyle, ile można móc wymagać od wieloletniej przyjaciółki. Ich znajomość ma zadatki na trochę toksyczną. Nie podoba mi się to, że fabuła została wyłożona w Wheels of Aurelia w tak nieangażujący sposób. Rozmowy o poważnych sprawach (bo przecież kobieta zastanawiająca się, czy usunąć ciążę, jest poważną sprawą) były najzwyczajniej w świecie nużące. Było mi wszystko jedno, co zrobią bohaterki i w jakich okolicznościach się rozstaną albo się ze sobą zwiążą.

Wheels of Aurelia ma swoje małe i dość urocze plusiki, ale czułabym się źle, gdybym poleciła tę grę, zwłaszcza że na mnie działała dość usypiająco. Uważam, że sztuką jest zaprojektować dobrze powieść wizualną, a w przypadku Wheels of Aurelia Włosi próbowali połączyć ten [i]statyczny[/i] gatunek z czymś dynamicznym, z kontrolowaniem, do pewnego stopnia, pojazdu należącego do głównej bohaterki. To nie wyszło dobrze, podobnie jak chęć upchnięcia jak największej liczby zakończeń. Myślę, że rozgrywka byłaby znacznie przyjemniejsza, gdyby tłem do przedstawianej historii nie były kiepsko wykonane plansze (lubię prostą grafikę, tutaj niestety psuje ona odbiór całości), a statyczne ilustracje narysowane w takim stylu, w jakim wykonano portrety postaci. Osobiście zrezygnowałabym z większości zakończeń na rzecz bardziej rozwiniętej fabuły, która pozwoliłaby na zbliżenie się do Lelli oraz Olgi, zapałanie do nich sympatią.

Jeżeli macie ochotę, skorzystajcie z oferty Epic Games Store. Nie spodziewajcie się jednak wartkiej akcji i wciągającej historii.

Au début, ce jeu m'intéressait (aventure, course, contexte historique, road trip) mais après y avoir joué 2h, l'ennui est déjà présent depuis un moment, si bien que je vais lâcher l'affaire. Car ce n'est pas vraiment un jeu d'aventure, pas vraiment un jeu de course mais bien un road trip dans l'Italie des années 70 style histoire visuelle.
Un "run" ou partie dure environ 15-20 minutes mais on refait presque à chaque fois les mêmes choses avec des dialogues similaires. Après quelques parties, du contenu et des dialogues supplémentaires apparaissent un peu artificiellement à mon goût. Il faut donc faire X parties ou une partie qui se finit de telle façon pour "débloquer" d'autres possibilités dans les parties suivantes. Et c'est ça le gros souci, c'est refaire quasiment à chaque fois la même chose, et quand on sait qu'il y a 16 succès pour 16 fins différentes, je dis non ! J'aurai préféré une histoire plus longue avec 2 ou 3 fins différentes, mais là non, je vais devenir chèvre!

Amei esse game!

Essencialmente é uma mistura muito bacana, diferente e sensata de visual-novel com game de corrida. Você controle uma mulher que está fugindo da Itália para a França. Seus motivos: a própria narrativa conta. O ano é 1978, ano importante na Itália, por causa do rapto de ministro Aldo Moro pelo grupo terrorista de extrema esquerda Brigate Rosse.

No entanto de forma alguma pode-se considerar que é um jogo de reação à esquerda, na verdade ele me parece exatamente uma grande homenagem à antiga esquerda de Pier Paolo Pasolini, ao feminismo pós-guerra, enquanto faz também uma reflexão sobre os radicalismos e conta uma boa história... ou melhor, várias boas histórias, visto que o caminho que você escolhe e o rumo que você dá às conversas podem mudar o final.

[list][*][b]Tempo de jogo[/b]: o game na verdade é bastante curto, mas como possui cerca de 16 finais, vale apena jogar diversas vezes para explorar os finais e as reações das personagens.
[*][b]Trilha sonora[/b]: A trilha sonora é repleta de rock-progressivo e rock-experimental. Particularmente são dois gêneros que eu não gosto, no entanto a trilha contribui muito bem na ambientação, na formação do tempo e construção da personagem principal.
[*][b]Arte gráfica[/b]: A arte, tanto das personagens quanto dos finais, é muito bonita. Não tenho mais o que falar. Simplesmente soberba!
[*][b]Conteúdo histórico[/b]: A parte histórica é muito boa. A gente aprende um bocado sobre a história da Itália.
[*]Ao zerar algumas vezes abre algumas opções visuais interessantes: um modo preto-e-branco, um modo 1978 que deixa o game com um visual parecido com fita VHS (o que me deixou com um pouco de dor de cabeça) e um modo cênico em que você pode mudar a posição da câmera, caso queira tirar prints.[/list]

Na verdade não há nenhum Contra nesse game que seja completamente negativo. Tudo aqui ou depende do jogador, ou é escusável, tendo em vista que se trata de um jogo de baixo orçamento.

[*][b]Tempo de jogo[/b]: Para quem é acostumado a ler 8 horas de numa visual novel e ainda ler novamente para ver as outras, o game pode ser considerado muito curto. Cada série de jogatina não vai durar mais que meia hora. Na verdade, se você dirigir rápido com o carro mais lento, já é possível completar uma série em 15 minutos. Mas como eu disse... como são 16 finais, o pouco tempo acaba sendo um ponto positivo para quem não tem muita paciência em jogar a mesma coisa várias vezes.
[*][b]Jogabilidade[/b]: O carro é um pouco chato de controlar. Se você soltar o controle, o computador já faz todas as curvas sozinho, ainda assim ele consegue bater no meio fio. Ao usar o controle, as chances de bater aumentam bastante. Nem de longe o controle é preciso e de vez em quando o carro simplesmente bate mesmo sem ter nada para bater. Entretanto não é nada que realmente atrapalhe a jogatina. E é, portanto, perdoável.
[*][b]Arte[/b]: Se por um lado os desenhos das personagens e dos finais são lindos, a arte gráfica da cidade durante o gameplay é meio sem sal. Não é feia, mas também não é nada que vai te marcar pela beleza. Eu não sei explicar ao certo o que é, não sou nenhum especialista em artes visuais, mas me parece que faltou alguma coisa que deixasse a arte tão marcante como é por exemplo, a arte do menu inicial. O único problema disto realmente é que, se a arte fosse melhor, daria maior importância ao modo cênico.

É o que eu falei lá em cima. O game é muito bom. Eu diria que é o melhor visual-novel ocidental que já joguei. Não que eu tenha jogado muitos games do gênero, mas em geral visual-novels ocidentais tentam repetir as fórmulas orientais e nunca fazem o serviço bem feito, tendo como resultado algo pouco inspirado e repleto de fan-service.

Aqui o processo é o oposto, Santa Ragione se aproveita do gênero para buscar um estilo novo e contar uma boa história.

Tem sim pontos negativos, como qualquer jogo, mas todos são subjetivos ou escusáveis.

A mistura de visual-novel com corrida foi, para mim, algo sempre impensável e, se alguém me dissesse que fosse fazer isso, eu esperaria o pior. Agora ao jogar me parece algo simplesmente natural. Uma pessoa dirigindo e batendo papo com os passageiros. Como não pensaram nisso antes?

This is--without a single doubt in my mind--one of the best non-Japanese visual novels I have played in a while. This is such a calming yet exciting experience, being a cute androgynous lesbian ploughing through 1978 Italy in a sports car and taking next to no ♥♥♥♥ is just the absolute dream. The characters are all well realised; Lella while having multiple dialogue options they all feel like things that she would say, it feels like that perfect middle ground of role playing as my own character whilst getting into the role of an established character.

The presentation of the world: gorgeous.
The character portraits: amazing.
The soundrack: f u c k i n g b o p p i n g .
The story: detailed and rich with interesting themes and points of view to explore that feel accurate for the time period with an entire glossary of references.

Basically, play the game.

[b] Итак, "Wheels of Aurelia"... В процессе прохождения я постоянно задавался вопросом: "А что это вообще такое?". Игра? Если даже и так, то с очень большой натяжкой. История дорожного приключения? А вот это больше похоже на правду. Давайте же разбираться, что из себя представляет данный продукт итальянского игропрома. [/b]

На дворе 1978 год. В Италии в самом разгаре "свинцовые семидесятые" - время разгула уличного насилия и терроризма, поэтому этот период еще называют "гражданская война низкой интенсивности". Коммунисты, неофашисты, революционеры - все тянут одеяло на себя, и страна балансирует на тонкой грани, за которой падение и хаос.

И вот на этом фоне нам рассказывают историю Леллы, которая путешествует по западному побережью Италии, держа путь во Францию. Кто же такая Лелла, что она забыла во Франции, да и доедет ли туда вообще - об этом мы узнаем, пройдя игру.

Геймплей в "Wheels of Aurelia" прост до безобразия. В принципе мы можем вообще ничего не делать, и тогда игра будет "играть сама в себя".

В самом начале мы должны выбрать марку и цвет автомобиля, на котором отправимся в поездку. Необходимо помнить, что это может существенно повлиять на концовку. Потом выбираем точку отправления ( в самом начале она всего одна - Рим) и начинаем путешествие по Аврелиевой дороге.

[i] Аврелиева дорога была построена в 241 году до н.э. и получила имя в честь своего создателя - Гая Аврелия Котты. Она идет вдоль западного побережья Аппенинского полуострова и соединяет Рим и Пизу. [/i]

Едем в машине, подбираем попутчиков, беседуем с ними и выбираем варианты ответов в диалогах. Именно от того, кого мы посадим в свою машину и о чем будем с ним разговаривать, и зависит концовка, а их в игре, на минуточку, целых шестнадцать штук. Ну, и еще от марки автомобиля и даже его цвета, о чем я уже упоминал. Изначально нам доступны далеко не все машины, "автопарк" будет открываться постепенно, по мере прохождения различных концовок. Кстати, один "сеанс" занимает всего пятнадцать-двадцать минут.

Плюс ко всему, по мере прохождения игры, мы получим возможность начать нашу поездку не из Рима, а из Чивитавеккьи, Виареджо и еще нескольких населенных пунктов, которые будем проезжать во время путешествия по Аврелиевой дороге.

Разговаривать наши герои и героини будут о самых разных вещах. О футболе и Ювентусе, об автомобилях и гонках, о политике и партиях, о фашистах и коммунистах, о феминизме и абортах... Складывается ощущение, что тем и диалогов в игре море, но оно на самом деле ошибочное. Вариантов не так уж и много, и через пару часов игры большинство мы будем знать наизусть. Да и попутчики, которых мы подбираем (а их всего шесть), стоят в строго определенных местах, так что проехать мимо просто не получится. Большое количество концовок поначалу радует, но потом понимаешь, что последние придется буквально вымучивать, проезжая по одним и тем же местам и проговаривая одни и те же фразы.

Порадовало наличие внутриигровой энциклопедии, где есть возможность почитать про нашу героиню, про Фиат, про фестиваль в Сан-Ремо и еще о многих интересных вещах, так или иначе связанных с Италией семидесятых. Только вот незадача: эти статьи приведены в виде небольших ознакомительных фрагментов, а кто заинтереуется - имеется ссылка на Википедию. Тем не менее за это игре можно смело поставить плюс.

А вот управление мне совсем не понравилось. В нашем распоряжении стрелочки, при помощи которых мы управляем автомобилем и выбираем варианты ответов в диалогах, и пробел, выполняющий функцию "газа". В принципе, машину можно вообще не трогать, наши герои не разобьются и не погибнут, но хотелось бы иметь возможность настраивать управление под себя. Мне, например, было бы намного удобней оперировать кнопками WASD или той же мышкой. Но на "нет", как говорится, и суда нет. Кстати, если вы водите машину - забудьте о своем опыте. "Wheels of Aurelia" дает нам уникальную возможность почувствовать себя неандертальцем за рулем "Феррари". Как бы мы не старались держать автомобиль точно посередине полосы, ничего не получится. Машинку заносит так, словно вместо бензина в нее залили пару цистерн спирта, да и водитель тоже изрядно "принял на грудь".

Графика в игре неплохая. Такая немного мультяшная картинка, красивые и аккуратные домики, мимо которых мы проезжаем, море, солнце, персонажи, словно сошедшие со страниц комикса... Но вот те арты, которые нам показывают в финале игры, однозначно стоят часов, потраченных на поиск разных концовок. Только за них игре можно простить и неудобное управление, и выученные наизусть диалоги, и попутчиков, которых иногда хочется просто прибить (особенно Ольгу). Я не буду пытаться описать эти арты словами, тут лучше самому увидеть.

Музыка вполне подходит под стиль и атмосферу игры, она звучит ненавязчивым фоном и дает возможность погрузиться в дорожное приключение в Италии семидесятых. А вот со звуками не все так радужно. Помните, я говорил про "пьяную" машинку? Этого разработчикам показалось мало, и каждое наше столкновение с другим автомобилем или бордюром (а столкновений в игре просто море!) будет сопровождаться звуком удара "Бдыщ!" и сумасшедшим ревом клаксонов. Такие звуки в состоянии выдержать только глухой пофигист, поэтому мой вам совет - отключите их. Совсем. От греха подальше.

[b] Знаете, первое прохождение "Wheels of Aurelia" далось мне нелегко. Я никак не мог абстрагироваться и погрузиться в атмосферу дорожного приключения. Но потом случилась первая концовка, и меня пробрало. Да, игра далеко не шедевр, да и игрой этот проект можно назвать с большой натяжкой, но в нем имеется свое очарование, атмосфера и потрясающе красивые арты. Хочу предупредить, что в "Wheels of Aurelia" нужно играть строго дозированно, прошел разочек - и на выход. Если просидеть в игре несколько часов подряд, пытаясь открыть все концовки разом, то это неминуемо приведет к раздражению и плевкам в монитор. [/b]

[b] Рекомендую ли я "Wheels of Aurelia"? Да, но тут есть несколько "но". Если вы любите экшен, стратегии и РПГ - проходите мимо. Поклонник визуальных новелл? Попробуйте, вполне может зайти. Любите неспешный геймплей, обилие диалогов и простую, но притягательную картинку? Вполне возможно, что это ваш шанс. Интересуетесь историей послевоенной Италии? Тогда игра сделана для вас! Wheels of Aurelia feels like a love letter to leftist 1970‘s Italy, and I write that as a compliment. The game oozes atmosphere.

Just don‘t expect a game in the narrow sense of the word – it‘s more of an interactive, dialogue-heavy time travel into 1970‘s Italy.

Wheels of Aurela is about driving through the night, talking to random people who share your co-driver‘s seat to stay awake.

I liked it a lot.

Luckily this game is short. Besides having nice visuals and a nice soundtrack, it kind of lacks everything else.

The story always seem that will get somewhere interesting, but don't really. The characters are rather boring and the car mechanics frustrating.

This all would be a little less important if you didn't had to play it over and over again to see different paths and endings.

A kind of creative and interesting game that falls short its potential, becoming boring rather fast.

I picked this up after a mention on Twitter and I am glad I did. The game or perhaps more of a visual novel has a great colorful setting in 1978 following a road trip across Italy. It features 16 endings giving the player different paths to take and experience an altered story line each time.

I love arcade driving games with a strong sense of style. OutRun 2 is my religion (almost). And I love narrative games with a strong sense of identity (heck, I'm a writer in the games industry for one). So this is an intriguing game for me.

The driving is relatively simple, and even has an auto-pilot feature. But it’s not without challenge, especially when you use the speed boost and are racing another driver or chasing down a terrorist (hello Chase HQ!). You can even choose different cars with different handling, and claim new cars during gameplay (GTA without the carjacking). But an element of simplicity to the handling is welcome here, given the visual novel dialogue that needs to be read at the same time. (Of note on accessibility is that you can also play the game one-handed!)

The strong sense of setting is striking, achieved particularly well by its radio stations and music. The narrative straddles good character development with dramatic plots and choices; on character, it’s refreshing to see a driving game with a female protagonist, who unlike in Outrun is not just there to be impressed by the man’s driving, but has her own aspirations to be an F1 driver! It has a strong political message at its core too, and at first I even thought it was based on true events (I think it is fiction inspired by events in 70s Italy). The in-game encyclopedia is useful for reflecting on the narrative, with entries unlocked through gameplay.

There’s also always something to talk about. I don’t know how deep it goes, but dialogue is constantly presented, with a timer ticking down before you choose a reply (you can also choose to remain silent). It reminded me positively of Heaven’s Vault and Firewatch in this regard. (I found the default text speed too fast to read, but it can easily be slowed in the options.)

I also think a driving game is a genius idea for a branching narrative - roads fork, and so do stories. The graphics are simple but have a strong style reminiscent of the flat-shaded polygons of Virtua Racing, conjuring up that sunny Mediterranean atmosphere.

I intend to return to it again soon and check out more of the story and endings.
