What Comes After is a literal walking sim. You only walk and talk to various NPC, it can’t be seen as a game. The themes it tackles and the way players interpret them are also very personal. I enjoyed the somewhat cheerful tone to depressing subjects but it might be a turn off to others expecting more layers. What I can say is how the anime art gives a warmth that’s a delight to experience. The English localisation is rather good, certainly compared to many other indie games. It’s important since the game is all about dialogues. As a person who usually can’t handle too much reading (pacing is king), I managed to finish the game in one sitting by reading for more than an hour and mostly being okay with it. The walking in between, enjoying the art and thinking a bit about what is being said helped to pace things.

In terms of flaws, there are three minor. It’s unclear when the game saves as I haven’t noticed any save icon even though it does save. That’s why I finished the game in one go, I didn’t want to redo sections. The achievements unlock after you close the game, so you can’t tell you got them while working towards them. And one achievement is tedious/confusing to get, most thought it was bugged but it’s not.

What Comes After is trying to teach something about life. It’s not original but it’s also not preachy, it’s presented elegantly. It’s comforting when you’re in the mood for reading and taking things slow. The normal price of €4 is okay for about an hour if you talk with every NPC. Expect an hour and half at most to get all the achievements.

Молодая, слегка депрессивная девушка попадает на поезд Харона и болтает с мёртвыми душами (не только людьми, но и животными и даже растениями). Игра на час, жанр "feel-good", геймплей — иди вправо-влево и жми пробел. Всё дело могли бы вытянуть хорошие диалоги, но я лично ничего такого тут не заметил, кроме абсолютно кошмарного автоперевода с английского.

Авторы индонезийцы, но это ни в чём не проявляется, кроме любимого блюда героини (похожего на бифштекс с яйцом); она даже совершенно по-американски излишне извиняется на каждом шагу (от чего её все тут пытаются отучить). Самое интересное в этой игре — упоминание яблока из райского сада, что побудило меня навести справки о мусульманских Адаме и Еве: они в коране тоже есть, и были изгнаны за свой грех, но, в отличие от христианства, были прощены после раскаяния и, как следствие, в исламе нет концепции первородного греха (каждый человек рождается чистым и несёт ответственность перед Богом лишь за свои действия). Кто бы мог подумать, что ислам в корне своём куда больше соответствует эгоцентричному мировоззрению западного человека (зацикленного на селф-мейде и личной ответственности), чем традиционное христианство.

Другой примечательный факт: автор игры успел сделать более известную [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/914800/Coffee_Talk/]Coffee Talk[/url], а в 2022-м умер от астмы в возрасте 32 лет. Земля пухом!

What Comes After é um jogo simples, mas bem legal. A experiência é curta e direta, focada mais na conversa e na mensagem do que em desafio.
Os gráficos são simples, mas combinam com a proposta, e a trilha sonora ajuda a deixar tudo mais leve e confortável enquanto o jogo avança.
A gameplay é básica, praticamente só andar e interagir, mas funciona dentro da ideia do jogo. A história passa uma mensagem bonita e sincera.

sometimes i find myself reminiscing about the late fahmitsu's works; this is one of those days. this is very simple compared to his other works, but considering it was made for a jam it's only fitting for it to be short and straight to the point. i love the tracks used within the game, and very sad that i couldn't find them outside of the game (save for the track by l'alphalpha, of course)! one gripe i have with it might be the clunky indonesian translation, but i think this is just part of a larger trend in indonesian translation rather than an isolated occurrence, so it's understandable www

Le jeu ne coûte vraiment rien (surtout en promo), donc en soi, j'ai du mal à ne pas le recommander. Mais ne vous attendez pas à quelque chose d'incroyable. L'histoire est très touchante, pleine d'émotions, mais ça reste avant tout une histoire, pas un jeu. Et honnêtement, le format jeu vidéo ne lui apporte pas grand-chose. Je suis même convaincue que je l'aurais peut-être encore plus appréciée en roman, en nouvelle, ou même en BD/manga/webtoon.

Le gameplay se résume littéralement à parler à tous les PNJ disponibles, lire leurs dialogues, découvrir leurs histoires, et voir au fil de ces rencontres celle de la protagoniste se dévoiler timidement jusqu'à l'ending. Il n'y a pas d'impact du joueur, pas de choix, rien qui permette d'influencer quoi que ce soit, et même si une fin alternative existe, elle est complètement anecdotique.

Le jeu est court, environ 1h30, et sur certains points c'est réussi : l'histoire est jolie, les graphismes sont corrects, la musique est vraiment chouette. Les bruitages sont à revoir en revanche. Et la traduction française… existe.

Personnellement, c'est une expérience contemplative qui m'a parlé, et certaines phrases m'ont réellement marquée. Rien que pour ça, je trouve qu'il mérite d'être recommandé, parce qu'il pourrait résonner avec d'autres personnes. Mais je serais incapable de le conseiller à quelqu'un qui attend un vrai gameplay, ou qui a du mal à prendre plaisir uniquement dans la lecture de dialogues, et très peu d'engagement de la part du joueur.

En résumé, si vous cherchez un jeu, ce n'est pas ce que vous trouverez ici. Si vous cherchez une histoire simple, douce, un peu mélancolique, racontée à travers un décor interactif… alors peut-être que vous y trouverez quelque chose qui vous parlera à vous aussi.

El juego no está mal, pero no es algo que te cambie la vida, y es bastante corto, alrededor de 1 hora.
Las animaciones están bien y las ilustraciones también; tienen buenos diseños y ambientación.
La historia es algo sosa y sin mucho peso, y la traducción al español tiene uno que otro error ortográfico (nimiedades).

En conclusión, lo recomendaría en oferta y te entretendrá por una hora. Sin mucho más que agregar.

A train ride through the afterlife that should have been soft and soul-touching… but left me surprisingly unmoved.

I’m not entirely sure when this game ended up in my library, but today I finally gave it a go. It’s one of those titles you have to be in the right emotional headspace to play - something quiet, thoughtful, heavy with meaning.
From the title alone, it’s clear the game centres around death. And from the moment you wake up alone on a train full of spirits, that theme is set in stone.

The gameplay is very simple - move left, move right, press a button to chat. That’s pretty much it. Oddly, the run function is tied to clicking in the thumbstick*, which felt unnecessary in a game with no real need to rush.

The story itself unfolds slowly… perhaps too slowly. You don’t learn much about your character until the very end, and the conversations along the way felt like they lacked the emotional depth I was expecting. Strangely, I felt more moved by the animal spirits than the people. Not sure that was intentional.
Oh, and the talking plants? That completely lost me. At that point I felt like I’d stepped out of an emotional journey and into a slightly awkward botanical side quest.

The art style is simple but effective. The train and backgrounds are softly drawn, and the mood is set with minimal visuals. That said, apart from the main character, most of the designs felt a bit rushed or underdeveloped. Maybe that was a deliberate style choice - but it made it harder for me to connect emotionally.

There are a few self-reflective moments - your classic “appreciate life while you have it” lines - but it all felt a little too surface-level. As someone who’s usually quite emotionally tuned in, I was surprised by how little this game made me feel.

The inclusion of infant loss is worth noting - it’s a heavy topic that might be upsetting for some. And while it’s brave of the game to include it, I found the way it was written felt a little… cheapened. Like it didn’t quite give the subject the weight it deserved.

The background music was gentle and calming, and the sound of the train rolling along the tracks was a nice touch. However, the constant clicking and beeping from the dialogue boxes quickly became unbearable. Every single sentence was punctuated with a sharp old-school telegram noise, and it grated hard. I muted it halfway through just to preserve my sanity.

Final Thoughts:
What Comes After clearly wanted to be something meaningful - a soft, introspective look at life, death, and everything in between. But sadly, it just didn’t reach that emotional depth for me. It felt underdeveloped, a little clunky, and too surface-level for a game that should’ve pulled at the heartstrings.

It’s very short and very cheap, so for some it might be worth the price. But for me, it was a one-time visit I won’t be revisiting. And I say that as someone who wanted to love it.

Man sollte sich auf das Spiel einlassen und die Triggerwarnung am Start des Spieles auch ernst nehmen.

Ich weiß nicht recht, wie ich dieses Werk beurteilen soll.
Möchte man sich einfach ein wenig mit den Themen Leben und Tod auseinandersetzen und gerne eine Geschichte lesen, kann man sich ne Stunde ganz nett beschäftigen. Obwohl ich die Idee und die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema super und wichtig finde, kann ich aus folgenden Gründen letztendlich keine positive Bewertung abgeben.

Emotionales Fazit:
Wenn man sich selbst in der Situation von Vivi befindet, ist das mit Sicherheit nicht für jeden etwas, da das Thema für mein Empfinden nicht neutral bzw. nicht mit der nötigen Sensibilität behandelt wird. Als persönlich vom Thema Betroffener schwingt sehr deutlich die Botschaft "Su*z*d - sowas macht man nicht" mit. Für den ein oder anderen könnte es daher auch ein Nährboden für Schuld- und/oder Schamgefühle sein und nicht die Selbstliebe stärken. Zumindest am Anfang von Vivi's Reise ging es mir zumindest so. Wirklich ernst genommen und gesehen fühle ich mich damit auch nicht. Vielleicht bin ich an der Stelle aber auch einfach zu sensibel und es stört andere weniger.

Positiv:
Es wird ein sehr ernstes und wichtiges Thema behandelt und man erhält einen (mMn eher flachen) Einblick in verschiedene Lebensgeschichten sowie Gründe, die für das Leben sprechen. Die grafische Umsetzung gefällt mir persönlich recht gut. Besonders ist für mich, dass es in der Geschichte nicht nur um menschliches Leben geht und dadurch das ganze nochmal aus einer Perspektive dargestellt wird, über die man sich im Alltag vielleicht eher weniger Gedanken macht.

Negativ:
Die Bezeichnung Adventure passt aus meiner Sicht nicht wirklich. Man klickt sich eigentlich nur durch mehr oder weniger lange Dialoge, die in der deutschen Sprachausgabe einige Rechtschreibfehler beinhalten. Es geht hier wirklich rein um die Geschichte. Gameplay, Entscheidungs- oder Einflussmöglichkeiten gibt es nicht. Einen Wiederspielwert gibt es für mich eher nicht, weil ich mich kein zweites Mal durch die Dialoge klicken möchte.

Ein kurzes Spiel darüber, wie kostbar unser Leben ist, welches durch die verschiedenen oftmals melancholischen kleineren Geschichten der einzelnen Charaktere lebt. Die Geschichte steht im Vordergrund und dadurch leidet etwas das Gameplay. Im Grunde geht man nur durch den Zug und spricht mit den Verstorbenen. Die Gespräche über das Leben und den Tod geben einen Anreiz über sich selbst etwas nachzudenken. Traurige Momente werden durch die Musik untermalt. Und der Art-style ist sehr passend für ein derartige Art von Spiel, doch könnte das Spiel etwas länger gehen. Vielleicht mit ein paar Rätseln die die Toten betrifft und Einfluss nehmen. Ich hatte teilweise nicht das Gefühl ihnen wirklich geholfen zu haben.

Думал будет что-то глубокое, с интересными рассуждениями, затрагивающее темы экзистенциальности, депрессии, антисамооживления и другие вещи о которых обычно не говорят в повседневной жизни.
А по итогу единственный смысл, который пытается донести игра, это - ЖЫТЬ КРУТА. Почему? Да просто потому что.
Причём сделано это так плохо и беззубо, что у меня как и у других игра вызвала в основном раздражение.
Я не знаю кому может понравится игра, которая вроде как должна говорить с игроком о смысле бытья, но при этом говорящая с ним максимально БАНАЛЬНЫМИ и мерзкими (лично для меня), даже не диалогами, а лозунгами, по типу: "всё наладится", "в жизни много хорошего", "смерть не выход".

Просто ФУ. Мало игр у меня вызывали подобный негатив, но эта постаралась на славу.

A short, bittersweet (with an adorable happy ending) story simultaneously about life, death, love, loss, letting go, and fighting to hold on. The writing is snappy and impactful, and I found myself very moved by what certain characters had to say even though we only spent a few moments together. I did tear up, especially after talking to one of the dogs (the curled up one), because my cat recently passed away. The range of characters is wide enough that I'm sure anyone playing who has lost someone (be it an animal or person) will see their loved one in one of the characters. Or maybe you'll see yourself in the main character, Vivi; she is well-written, too (and her sprites! Her body language says so much about her as well). This is really more of a visual novel than a game, but I think it's worth the price, and while I don't understand the language the original song is in, I thought the feelings it embodies go really well with the ending, and I found myself listening to it again.

this is not a long game, but it's a worthwhile game to play. the 70 min is how long it took for 100% achievement completion, which is 2 run-throughs (different ending achievements). i appreciate games that make me ponder my mortality and this one does that very nicely. take the time to get the good ending, it's very cute.

really touching story! the art style is lovely! most of the people you talk to is really interesting but theres a few I was like why the f am I talking to a plant thats dead x) I think I had to replay the start of it over and over a few times because an achievement was bugged out and wouldnt pop but after a while of me doing it over it popped, hopefully they will fix it, other than that it was an easy 100%

A short but very sweet game. It had me tearing up a lot. I bought this because I just lost my boyfriend and it helped me imagine him being on this train and peacefully going to what comes after. I hope he made a lot of friends with all the passengers and animals, he was always super kind and popular. Thank you for creating this game, it's helping me a lot on my journey to peace. <3

What a lovely game, having played through this game twice now, I really enjoy what it has to offer. It's a heartwarming story of acceptance and finding peace with ourselves and I have to say that it's really well done.

Игра на 1 час. Я даже не поверил что это конец ИГРЫ а не главы.
По сути вы ходите по вагонам и общаетесь с людьми. Через минут 25 вам это надоедает и вы понимаете что лучше общаться только с теми, у кого белый значок (!) чем со всеми подряд. Некоторые истории гнобящие, поэтому людям с Тревогой лучше и не проходить эту игру.
К концу игры я просто тупо начал пропускать диалоги и читать по диагонали
- диалоги скучные, хоть и на русском. Кстати ПОЛ местами указан не верно (обычно в мужском роде)
- Анимация одна и та же. Как будто есть всего 3 позы в которых героиня существует. Аналогично с пассажирами. На короткую игру могли бы уж ввести разнообразие
- звук "бу-лу-буп" который так же через 10 минут раздаражает и я просто его убрал в настройках
- нет управления с геймпада. точнее есть, там всего то 3 клавиши, но через саму систему стим а не от разработчика
- короткий сюжет в 5 вагонов (ну или 7 вагонов)

Купил игру в комплекте с другими играми от разработчика. Даже не пародия на Кофе Толк а скорее работа школьника по олимпиаде. Покупать её как отдельную игру я не советую

What Comes After é mais do que um jogo é uma conversa íntima com as partes da gente que mais doem. Você acompanha Vivi, uma jovem exausta emocionalmente, que pega um trem... e acaba adormecendo e acordando no mesmo trem, mas um pouco diferente... agora ele leva almas para "o que vem depois".

Durante essa jornada, você escuta histórias de pessoas, animais e até plantas que estão partindo deste mundo. São diálogos simples, mas profundamente humanos. Cada conversa traz uma nova forma de pensar sobre vida, morte, empatia, propósito e dor.

Mas o ponto forte do jogo é como Vivi cresce com essas interações e confronta seu próprios pensamentos negativos.

E mesmo assim, o jogo não oferece soluções mágicas para os problemas. Ele oferece compreensão, escuta e uma faísca de esperança. Às vezes, isso é tudo que a gente precisa.

Arte🎨: Visualmente lindo.
Trilha sonora🎶: Trilha sonora suave e emocional.
Duração⏳: Achei meio curto, mas tem um forte impacto.

A walking simulator that is moreso telling a story then being a game.

By accident you get on a train on its way to the afterlive- full with people, animals and event plants who recently died. Some of them full of regnet, some of them comfortable to pass on.

You walk around the train and talk to them, hearing their stories and their takes on death.
I wish it would have been a bit longer so some of the stories could habe gone a bit deeper, but it still is very interesting for what it is.

Read before you buy the game!!!

I know in the description of this game it's mentioned this is a 'side-scrolling adventure'. But I have to say, it's very much less adventure based than I would have liked. This is less game and more visual novel. You play as a young girl who falls asleep on a subway train and wakes up strangely in the afterlife with no real explanation as to why. Which sounds great as a jumping off point, but they never really go further from there. It's never explained why you are on the train, it's more just a "gee I wonder" kind of thing. But the main 'game play' part of this 'game' is to move left or right, walking or holding shift to slightly scuffle your feet faster along the train. You hit space to talk to people and go through some long winded non-voice acted conversations, so basically a lot of reading. When you talk to everyone on the subway train which is about 6-7 cart fulls of conversations with people, animals, plants, etc. you go sit in your seat and the game ends.

It's hard for me to give this slightly animated visual novel a negative review, because on one hand, the art is cute and pretty and the one song that plays at the end is a nice song to listen to. But on the other hand this is not a game and it should be described as accurately as possible on the steam page to be just that. There's very little game play here and mostly reading, which I am not against. One of my favorite games of this style is called "The thief, the witch, the toad, and the mushroom". At least, it's called that at the beginning, because in that visual story you read through the fable, only for it to change as you go through a 'choose your own adventure' style story. And the book itself messes with you on so many levels it's amazing (absolutely give that game a try if you enjoy visual novels/books of this style!). What's even more surprising is that game is free, compared to this game that asks you for $5 to walk around and read.

And that's my real issue here with this 'game', it needs something. If you're going to make a visual style novel like this it doesn't need much, but it needs something creative to add in order for it to make sense being on a platform like this. I'm not saying it needs WASD, or mini games, puzzles or ringing bells. But this is a story of a young girl that is on a train for the afterlife, and in the beginning the conductor lady explains that you 'might be able to help some of the deceased with issues they have leftover from their lives' and wouldn't it have been nice to be able to have multiple choices on what to respond to the dead on the train to help them through their unresolved issues. Or to have the ability to find objects for them that carried memories? Maybe you find an item for one of the deceased and it unlocks a art scene for them of a memory or their story. If they did want to lean more into the game play category they could have given you the ability to phase in and out of life and death to help the ghosts resolve their issues before passing on, which would have made the $5 price tag more viable. Something. Anything.

This game definitely tries to send clear messages about living a better life before your death. On this train of death you are greeted by people who took their own life, animals that were abused, plants feeling pain when people harvest/eat them, even a baby that got sick and died. The creators of this story wanted you to feel...something clearly. And be able to take away messages of hope and betterment from their 'game'. But like I said, it's not enough to just stand on a soapbox and preach these things when people are expecting some kind of interaction on a platform like this, even at the minimum level, you need some kind of game play or you need to just be very direct about this being a $5 visual story.

If you do really want to experience this book and have ghosts preach at you for 0.8 hours (I am a fast reader but that is the time it took me to get through it in it's entirety), wait for it to go on sale like I did and pick it up for $1 or less.

I am going to leave a negative review here, but it's more just for warnings sake. Because what I thought I was going to get was a chill game that had a lot of visuals but had SOME small form of actual chill interaction, what I got was just a quick read that albeit was a little cute and fun to look at, but didn't really have much else to offer me. And I don't want anyone else to feel buyer's remorse, so the negative review is to save people some money if they would be disappointed with what this title truly offers. If you still think you'd like to try this title, go for it, it's not bad per say, it was just not accurately described well enough for my liking.

What Comes After is wholesome game made by a small team and did hit me in the feels at times, so I feel bad leaving a negative review, but at the end of the day the gameplay entirely consists of talking to people and the writing was of inconsistent quality. The English version had plenty of awkward turns of phrase too; YMMV with other languages.

Very simple and short, not much actual game play which will be hit or miss with people. You just walk, click on subjects and read conversations. I bought it on a sale and feel like my 70 minutes was worth the price I paid. I suffer from depression and anxiety so some conversations hit more than others. Nothing really new or profound was said, but I found myself tearing up a lot anyway especially with the animals.

This game was short, simple, yet heartwarming. Makes you cry a little, even. So many meaningful messages told to the point I that had to pause and reflect on myself for a while.
I've actually listened to L'Alphalpha's "Pulang, Kembali" before I discovered this game. Now it feels like it hits me even harder.

I really want to like this game, but I just don't. The whole game consists of the arrow buttons and pressing enter. No gameplay, just dialogue. I couldn't even get immersed into the thoughtfulness of life & death because the bubble noise of the text, constant clicking of enter, and lack of voice acting. I'm kinda bummed I spent $6 on this.

Caminar y leer:
Un juego corto y con un apartado visual bonito y minimalista.
Este juego se resume en caminar y leer, es 100% lineal y se ve que su principal objetivo es mostrar los pensamientos que los desarrolladores tienen sobre el tema de la muerte, vivir la vida y sobre tener pensamientos de quitarle la vida.

No hay mucho que decir sobre el gameplay, la historia me pareció que tiene muy buenos conceptos pero creo que no lograron sacarles todo el potencial que tienen, también dan a entender que el personaje principal tiene pensamientos de acabar con su vida, pero me pareció muy secundario en realidad, me pareció que quisieron apuntar muy alto con ese tema y les quedo muy grande.
En resumen un juego sencillo, para pasar el rato que esta bien 👍

What a sweet little game. At first I thought it might end up being a bit dull, but if you really listen to what the characters are trying to tell you about themselves (and even about you), then you start to connect and even feel a tug at the ol’ heartstrings. Anyone who calls it “boring” (like I almost did) is probably just too impatient to try to grasp much from it. Imho, of course.

So if you have an hour or so on a cold rainy day and want to see something cute, meaningful & heartwarming…grab your fluffiest blanket, make a spot of tea, and play this game.
