Locksley doesn't kill. That would be far too easy. Instead, he commits his crimes through stealth. Sneaking, distracting, avoiding. He is never seen, and seldom heard. As he grows in popularity and notoriety, so will his inventory. An arsenal of gadgets await discovery in a quest to rob from the rich and give to the unheard. A hundred challenging and exciting levels lie ahead, but that is only the beginning of the Volume. The community are free to build their own challenges, even releasing their own takes on the core levels. Volume will evolve, warp and grow as players make their mark on Locksley's legend.

Volume is a great stealth game with varied mechanics and beautiful music.

Gameplay is a bit abstract, but it contains most of concepts present in the genre: vision cones, footstep sounds, hiding in shadows, creating decoys, stunning guards and many more. Due to rotation of challenges and available tools it never really gets old throughout whole campagin i.e. 8 hours (in my case). As for the music - it creates nice, a bit melancholic atmosphere and fits the game. Just search it on the YouTube ;)

Volume is a hidden gem - in my opinion a game definetely worth trying.

A bit like a simplistic Metal Gear VR Missions- you go through stages that are basically little simulations collecting diamonds to open up the exit while avoiding enemies. It's fun but it gets repetitive. The powerups are pretty cool. You get some that will send out decoys or make you invisible. Another cool thing is that any of the main game levels can be made in the level editor. The game keeps adding new game play elements as you progress, but because it's so simplistic it gets tiring around level 60 of the 100 total levels.

The achievements also add very little and are mostly tedious. This is a decent ten hour game and while it's fun to examine the mechanics and mess around with things, I wouldn't compare it to the greater games in the stealth genre like Metal Gear and Splinter Cell. It's fine as its own little thing. If the game design was a little less tedious and the story less nonsensical I'd probably put it closer to some of the all time greats, but as it is it's a fine little mini stealth adventure with some neat quirks.

I love stealth games, so I was excited to try this one out. While there is some stealth involved, it gets repetitive very quickly. The gameplay simply isn't fun, especially when you mess up, restart, and your equipment is forced on a cooldown timer, so you have to stand still waiting 5-10 seconds before even beginning your next attempt.

Basically, the stealth is tedious and it never feels rewarding.

Un juego de sigilo con gráficos simples, como el primer Metal Gear Solid. Tiene muchos niveles (100) muy cortos, y te están dando continuamente nuevos gadgets y nuevos obstáculos.

E' strutturato in 100 brevi o brevissimi livelli di puro stealth : prendere i preziosi e uscire dalla room senza farsi vedere, tutto qui ! Pochissimo story telling , quasi assente la trama . . . sembra un gioco di altri tempi , anche la grafica molto minimale (con vista dall'alto) è quella dei vecchi giochi anni 90 . Non è un capolavoro ma offre un discreto divertimento , ha diverse idee e gagets interessanti e può vantare 100 stages che però talvolta sono un poco ripetitivi nella meccanica di gioco , livello di sfida medio non di più . . . secondo me è da acquistare solo quando è a 9 € o anche meno , sempre se siete degli appassionati dello stelth puro e semplice : si intende !

Ma ha una storia che mi ha sorpreso notevolmente, raccontata a chicchi, testualmente e visivamente, senza invadere l'esperienza ma arricchendola. [h1]Played to platinum on PSN, happy to see the experience is similar on PC[/h1]

I honestly can't remember which platform I bought this game for first - either way they both ended up as backlog items for a while despite my best intentions. Either way, I've played them both now and am wholly satisfied.

The main game consists of 100 core levels. The gameplay is stealth, and it plays from an isometric view. The story runs along the lines of a kid being fed up with an oppressive regime; in an old abandoned warehouse he sets up a virtual infiltration, getting an old AI to offer up virtual representations of real-world secure facilities. By 'virtually' infiltrating all these places, and broadcasting it to the internet, he shows others how they can rise up against their rulers.

To be honest, I don't really need an excuse to play a stealth game, if I see what I hope is good gameplay. And I think it is very good.

It's true the initial levels are quick and easy so you're likely to flash through them in blinding speed, but the complexity ramps up well with the incremental addition of new features and tools. Before you know it you may find you have to wait and think it all through.

In the first level you grab some gems to activate the exit pad. Gradually defence units are added in, ranging from regular units with a gun and a vision cone showing what their range is, then there are turrets, units with a full 360 view, snipers, and really fast walls of meat with swords that end you as soon as they are close enough. As meaty as polygons can be at any rate.

Still further variety exists with distracting taps, toilets, and eventually whistling. Vaulting over low obstacles may take a while to be introduced but cupboards and floor grills make for good temporary hideouts, while special tools such as a throwable bugle that can be remote triggered, stun wire, cloak, speedy silent shoes (mute), disguise, and even a running decoy can help through the most challenging of the levels.

The game even has teleport pads, but features like this are cleverly explained away by the 2D nature of the levels and lack of stairs - even the AI insists it has limitations and you have to take the designs with an open mind. The AI and main character Rob Locksley (pun intended) are voiced, by have less and less dialogue as the levels progress. Some of the text (in-game lore) is quite clever, such as comments about the colour palette, or the introduction of lights (but only much later than when shadows got added), or the comments about the library or the castle with the banners.

It's a fun game. I wouldn't go by my play time as a guide though as my first game was on PSN, so I have a bit of foreknowledge this time around. There is a little bit of mop-up in terms of achieves after the game is complete, but some levels are really good for grinding the last few out. I'm convinced some are glitchy with keeping track of numbers but they do eventually unlock.

If you like stealth and you like quality gaming, then you're likely already sold. It'll get your mind working. I don't regret buying it on two platforms, so you should at least buy it on one ;)

Mike Bithell's [i]Volume[/i] is a game caught between two worlds, and in spite of its best efforts, it can't quite split the difference between them. Nevertheless, it's a well-designed little stealth game that's certainly worth a play.

The strongest argument I can make in [i]Volume[/i]'s favor is its mechanical identity. Reminiscent of the VR levels from [i]Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance[/i], the game is a top-down stealth title; designed almost more like a puzzle game than a strict sneak-'em-up, [i]Volume[/i] sees players methodically creeping through a series of abstract chambers designed to test both their tactical thinking. The compressed, bite-sized nature of the experience lends itself well to short, casual play sessions, and the visual design of each level is easy to understand at a moment's glance.

The story, on the other hand, is a bit of a mess. A cyberpunk adaptation of the myth of Robin Hood, players follow the adventures of Rob, a criminal-by-proxy who aims to incite a revolution against the tyrannical Guy Gisborne by live-streaming methodical instructions on how to break-into a steal from Gisborne and his lackeys. Fun, right? And credit where credit is due, the overall presentation is quite good. The voice work in the game, especially that of Danny Wallace and Andy Serkis (Yes, [i]that[/i] Andy Serkis!), is rock solid.

Less effective is the actual tone of the piece, which is... well, it's a mess. A compelling sci-fi tale in 2015, [i]Volume[/i] story of corporate coups and totalitarian governments feels, in 2024, a bit quaint, bordering on politically naive. The nail in the coffin here is the way that the game lauds the player for live-streaming a step-by-step guide to revolutionary burglary, a concept that, though fun, fails to read as much else either than a certain of-the-time tech-optimism that has aged poorly. (Compare to the similarly aged, albeit similarly charming, [i]WatchDogs 2[/i], for instance.) All of this is compounded by a handful of elements that date the game significantly - though, that said, not all are without charm. Depending on what YouTube channels you followed a decade ago, cameos from James Stephanie Sterling and Dan Bull will either delight or else rip you out of the experience entirely.

Still, all of this is par the course for a Mike Bithell production, and whether or not that works for you, I found it worked well enough for me. Though it lacks the narrative coherence of [i]Thomas Was Alone[/i] or the breathless replayability of [i]John Wick Hex[/i], [i]Volume[/i] is a delightful recreation of a very specific type of stealth game that simply doesn't exist much anymore. An aside, though - for whatever reason, I found that the game's tools for level creation and sharing didn't work in my time with the game. Though not a deal-breaker, the game's longevity is clearly built around an easily mastered set of tools, and the inability to create or share your own stealth levels is disheartening. I was hoping, at the end of my run, to monkey around with the design kit, and I was disappointed to not be able to share my levels nor to try out other user-designed set-pieces.

And yet, the final result of all of this - a tense, well-designed stealth puzzle game that clocks in at a little under seven hours - is still quite engaging. It's far from Mike Bithell's best work, but it's an excellent showcase that he knows damn well what he's doing from a design standpoint. If you've got a tactical espionage itch that Metal Gear just isn't scratching, consider robbing from the rich to give to Chat in this compelling little title.

As a stealth game, Volume is full of terrible design choices: Enemies are brain-dead, shadows are binary, abilities are gimmicky, checkpoints are everywhere, levels are counted in seconds. Instead it plays something like maybe Hotline Miami, or Super Meat Boy, but more forgiving. I can only assume the game designers are morons but through sheer determination made their product playable. It's not a great game and it's not a proper stealth game. I'm not sure what it is, but there is plenty of it. Buy it and be perplexed.

Нечестно писать обзор на игру, в которой наиграл только один час 8 лет назад. Тем не менее, охота разъяснить для себя, почему мне не зашел многими любимый проект

В первую очередь хвалят повествование. Начало подает его крайне мало: главный герой увиливает от истины своего дела, удерживая игрока в скупой интриге, компаньон дает нам сводки о злодеях, но самим по себе завлекать нечем. Основной сок, наверняка, разовьется к середине и дальше. Думаю, автор намеренно хочет, чтобы мы сперва прикипели к персонажам за счет геймплея, и только потом сюжетные события с ними будут вызывать волнения

Основным камнем преткновения, пожалуй, является геймплей. Сам по себе он не отвратителен, но я не могу принять условности 2Д. Звук распространяется небольшим шаром и проходит сквозь стены, зрение врагов отчетливо показано узкими и короткими конусами. Я не знаю, что со мной такое, но 2Д стелс на меня не работает. То же самое было с Mark of the Ninja, которую широко признали шедевром стелс жанра. Даже если игра отличная, я не могу воспринимать ее полноценно. Это не игра, а симуляция игры. Личная проблема, хотя я откровенно теку от 3Д исполнения в жанре

Усугубляет ситуацию выбранная стилистика. Я обожаю стелс-экшены, и важнейшая составляющая для меня - ощущение проникновения на запретную охраняемую территорию. Здесь территории нет, только виртуальная комната. Главный герой буквально создал виртуальный мир, в котором мы крадемся и воруем кубики. Погружение выходит никакущее: пространство несуществующее, объекты нереальные и эфемерные, уровень - набор голых стен. Скорее всего дело все ещё в 2Д-составляющей игры. Плоские уровни мной слабо осознаются за гранью платформ, стен и потолков, от чего из них не выходит эмерджентное пространство. Стелс в несуществующей локации имеет несуществующее погружение для меня

Ранее я познакомился с Майком Бителлем, автором Volume, благодаря Thomas Was Alone. Игра была шедевральная с феноменальным повествованием. Ему удалось влюбить меня в монохромные прямоугольники и создать из них настоящих персонажей. Жаль, что я не могу прочувствовать эту игру. Я верю, что она хороша, но ей не удается сработаться со мной

This game is incredible, definitely the best stealth game I have ever played! It's very refreshing to see a game so small and simple in scope yet so profound in its execution. What really makes the stealth work so well in this game is all the different gadgets, abilities and enemy variety the game throws at you at such an excellent pace. This brings me to my next point: Pacing. The pacing in regards to stealth is phenomenal and the game does an excellent job at making every level feel unpredictable. You never really know what to expect, whether there will be a new ability, new enemy type, new gadget, or just an old enemy or gadget suddenly returning after 15 levels of absence. I would recommend this game to any stealth and Indie Low Poly games fan. 11/10 !!!

- Decent amount of mechanics introduced in a fairly good pace, making the gameplay stay fresh. However, most of the levels had a single solution, which is fine but not ideal.
- Attempted to tell some kind of "story" without success.
- Keyboard controls are somewhat sluggish for something requiring quick movement which becomes more important in the later levels.
- The gadget "aiming" controls for mouse are horribly bad; why can't the game have a separate "aim" button instead?
- The detection soundtrack is basically a jumpscare mechanic, with it playing loud the instant you get spotted.
- Not a fan of "collect 100% of this"/"do 100 times of that" achievements. Those are not achievements, those are busywork.

Kinda meh, pick this up on a sale if you haven't played any MGS VR.

手柄操作简单，移动主角避开各种守卫。
这守卫看着像是机器人，所以只有前方视角以及特别大的声响才有反应。
主角可以跟在守卫后面不被发现或者主角潜行真的连一点声响都莫有···

路上有各种说明点按A可以看过关提示。
地图上有部分设备可以按A激活，这一般会吸引周边的守卫过来查看。
在墙壁边上按LT可以贴墙蹲下移动，防止部分守卫看到。
按X发出声音吸引守卫。
以上是基本操作，然后就是道具使用了···
道具一共有9种，基本都是RT操作
FIGMENT：
右遥感瞄准，再按RT能出现一个幻影朝前移动吸引守卫注意，但幻影撞到墙壁会碎掉。
MASQUERADE：
按下RT伪装成守卫，可以在一定时间内防止被守卫发现···
OUD：
右遥感瞄准，再按RT丢一个粘弹到墙壁，再按RT触发吸引守卫注意。
BLACKJACK：
右遥感瞄准，再按RT可以敲晕守卫。
EVIL：
按下RT隐身一段时间。
FOLLY：
右遥感瞄准，再按RT在路上产生一条线，守卫经过会！？（没试过不晓得···）
BUGLE：
右遥感瞄准，再按RT能丢石头吸引守卫注意。
（这石头有高科技可以不断撞墙直到最后一个位置才boom响起来···）
MUTE：
按下RT临时加速跑，但速度其实也没多快。
ODDITY
右遥感瞄准，再按RT能丢一个奇怪光点吸引守卫注意。

道具完了还有地图上的元素了：
1、守卫，分为可移动的和站岗守卫，基本都是看到主角或者听到声音会去查看。
2、光点，主角移动上去获取光点，把地图上所有光点都收集后打开传送门。
3、传送门，收集完地图上全部光点即可打开传送门，主角进入传送门过关。
4、墙壁上的机器，靠近后按A会发出声响吸引附近的守卫
5、地面白框，主角移动过去（不管是潜行还是贴墙）都会发出声响吸引周围的守卫注意。

被守卫看到守卫会开始追主角···主角移动又慢，守卫倒计时结束就boom开枪了。
但如果主角在狭小空间拐个弯可能能把守卫绕晕，有些关卡需要用这种方式来改变守卫布局。
被发现的那音乐确实突然响起来好大声，容易吓到人。

支持单人、多人、附带分数榜，甚至还有关卡编辑器！
网络环境不好多人加载不出来，分数榜随机出不来···
时不时蹦出Timeout提示估计是没法上传我的游戏分数吧···

ゲーム自体は面白いんだけど、いくつか不具合らしきものを見かけたので注意

・プレイ中にwindowsをスリープさせると、パッドが利かなくなる。要ゲーム再起動
・一部のステージが眩しすぎてアイテムが見えない
・パッドでプレイする際は、最初の配置が微妙なのでやり易いキー配置に変更してもいい
・ただし、プレイ中にキー操作やオプションが変更できない。タイトルに戻ってオプションをいじり、ステージの最初からやり直す羽目になる。

全１００ステージでボリュームたっぷり
かなりごり押し可能な難易度（ステージ46%以外）
ステージ内でも細かくセーブされたり、ガジェットの時間制限も余裕があり、時間に追われることは少ない

ゲームのネーミングはもう少し検索性を考えたほうがいいかもしれない。
本作の攻略とかストーリーの考察サイトを探そうとしても、音量ボリューム設定のページなんかがヒットするため、ノイズが酷すぎて目的のページが見つけられない。

Simple gameplay and short MGS VR mission style levels, but stays interesting by doing a very good job introducing new mechanics and ideas at a fast and constant rate. As far as short and simple indie stealth games go, definitely one of the better ones.

The only major issue I have with it is the music, which is unremarkable ambience when in stealth but the moment you get spotted switches to a very loud track that works as a jump scare every single time. Would recommend muting the music and putting on Deus Ex/System Shock/Hitman Codename 47/Prey soundtracks which are more fitting anyway.

All right, so I bought this game a very long time ago, and I couldn't exactly remember why I dropped it without playing much of it... Puzzle games are my jam, and while stealth often isn't, this sounded like a game I should've at least finished on paper. Booting it up quickly reminded me why I never bothered.

Volume is a fairly serviceable stealth puzzle game where you use the layout of the level in combination with various gadgets to manipulate the reactive AI and collect jewels before reaching the exit. The game offers various checkpoints throughout each level that save your progress in case you fail. The biggest problem for me is that gadgets have a recharge time (to prevent spam/overuse and trivialize levels,) but respawning at a checkpoint does NOT let you start with a charged gadget, nor it speeds up said charging time in any measure. This means that in many, many maps, you'll fail at a checkpoint, then wait several seconds for the gadget to recharge before you can actually do another attempt. Pair that with a level design that grew stale really quickly for me, and you'll see why I saw no reason yet again to finish the game, even all these years later.

This didn't warrant a negative review back in the day, but it does now because of the near-abandonware state of the game.

At least a few people seem to be having graphical problems (some are unable to even launch the game,) and even I had to squint to change the abysmal resolution it launched with after the most recent install. The developers are unresponsive in the forums, and they apparently even released DLC maps on other platforms but not on Steam, although this was years ago now. The game is also supposed to have servers with highlighted maps and customer maps, but those are offline today and have been for many years.

I do understand that developers have to move on from a game sooner or later, few can afford (and are willing) to support a piece of software virtually forever, but I simply have to advise against buying this game considering the state it's in, which is also the state it'll be in for the foreseeable future.

volume is a indie stealth game developed & published by mike bithell and his independent studio mike bithell games. it released in august 2015 for PC & PS4 and later was ported to the playstation vita in january of 2016. the game is very obviously heavily inspired by the metal gear solid series, as you use stealth and other mechanics introduced over time to solve each level. bithell's inspiration for volume was actually directly linked to his love of the metal gear solid series. the game also presents a narrative that is supposed to be a modern or futuristic take on the legend of robin hood. they also got a ton of great talent (andy serkis, danny wallace to name a few) to voice various characters throughout the game.

volume's gameplay is a top-down view of the level and you can move your character around the area as you avoid sight lines from guards. there is a decent variety of guards that have different movement patterns or different ways of responding when they are alerted by the player. there's also a level-designer, which is cool and unique, especially for the mid 2000s. there's also a cool caveat that future games like super mario maker implemented: you have to beat your own level first before you can upload them online for others to play.

overall, volume is a solid little indie game that is admittedly pretty short, but when you can routinely find it on sale nowadays for as low as $4, i really can't complain. plus, you're supporting one of the most progressive dev teams in the world. it's pure stealth with a fun plot in-between, but little else.

Die Idee ist ja nett, aber ich habe nach etwas über 35 Leveln aufgehört. Ich fand das Spiel von Anfang an zu einfach und hatte gehofft, dass nach der Vorstellung der wesentlichen Spielelemente der Schwierigkeitsgrad anziehen würde. Dem war aber aber leider nicht so. Letztendlich braucht man aufgrund der großzügig verteilten Checkpoints nur wenige Versuche - wenn überhaupt mehrere -, um einen Level zu beenden, und der Lösungsweg ist meist sofort ersichtlich. Da fehlt einfach die Herausforderung.

Die Story alleine ist es nicht wert, das Spiel trotzdem zu Ende zu spielen, finde ich. Der Protagonist kommt zu selbstgefällig rüber und seine Sprecherstimme finde ich nervig.

You know those forced stealth sections that sometimes show up in video games? This is that, but for an entire game.

100 levels, I finished it all out of spite after I realized the emptiness and railroaded nature was not going to change. The story/dialogue was the only partial redeeming quality, it just keeps going, forcing you to "solve" the level with extremely limited sequences and actions...

Out of all the Bithell games I've played, I can say this was the least satisfying.

게임 자체는 무난하고 만듦새도 나쁘지 않습니다. 예산 내에서 최대한 깔끔하게 뽑은 비쥬얼과 컨셉, sarcasm 들어간 스크립트도 나름 매력이 있고요. 심심풀이로 가볍게 해볼만한 무난한 게임이긴 합니다.

그러나 완성도와 별개로 지금 이 게임은 개발사로부터 방치되어 네트워크 컨텐츠 접근이 안되는 상황입니다. 사람이 적다 이런게 아니라 서버가 내려갔는지 그냥 접근 자체가 안되요. '정가 주고 샀는데 억세스 불가능한 컨텐츠가 있는 타이틀'을 남에게 추천해줄수는 없습니다. 심지어 이 개발사의 4개 작품중 단가로는 가장 비싼 제품인데 말이에요.

[b]Volume[/b] is displayed in 3D, isometric style. The environment looks simple with blocks as walls and robots as characters, giving a feeling that the game was set on the internet. I especially like the effect at the beginning of the level when the whole area is being made.

[b]Volume[/b]'s objective is simple. You need to retrieve all diamonds in the area while dodging all obstacles and getting out of the enemies' sight, then head to the exit. New obstacles, enemies, and power-ups will be revealed as you progress, increasing the variety of the gameplay.

It starts as a stealth game that tests your skills and patience. Enemies have a cone vision that you should avoid - it's safe to walk right next to the enemy as long as you don't step on their vision range. With walls having different heights, you are also encouraged to hug the lower walls with the risk of having a slower speed and getting caught.

That being said, it's not game over if you get caught. Enemies will chase you, but you can run out of their sight and confuse them - they'll soon back to their routine. Escaping is the tricky part, though. Sometimes it's easier to just get killed and restart.

Some levels require you to pull off several quick actions in succession. A window of error if you don't want to get caught can be small on some levels, and getting caught seems to be encouraged. This becomes more apparent on the last few levels with the addition of power-ups that can disable an enemy where you have to lure them to a certain location. I was being careful not to be seen in the first few levels, but I decided to give up once the game introduces such elements. It doesn't feel right to get seen in a stealth game, but at least the game still offers some sort of challenge from its difficulty.

Luckily, checkpoints are abundant. They only appear whenever you are not being chased, but you can trigger them as many times as you want. However, although it gives more benefit to have enemies return to their locations, power-up charges are also reset once you respawn in the checkpoints.

I finished the game in 6.3h. The rest of my playtime was spent scooping up my leftover achievements and checking out other modes. The game has 4 modes, with the main mode having 100 levels, another having 1+1 simple levels, and the other two that are related to the online functionality. It's dead, by the way.

The game might be easy at the beginning, but it becomes tricky as you go. Sometimes, I am not confident if I'm able to replicate what I did to finish the levels. Some levels also give me trouble with their tricky solutions - despite being a stealth game, sometimes it feels more like a puzzle game with you having to execute actions in a certain order to pass the levels.

Most achievements can be obtained by playing the game normally, although some require more effort to do. Once you finish the game, achievement hunters can run an auto clicker to sweep some of the grindy achievements that they missed. The tricky part lies in the fact that some achievements can only be granted by restarting the game.

[b]Issues[/b]
Sometimes, the game will have a conversation in the middle of the level in the form of dialogue or text. To be honest, I found it to be annoying - it was hard to focus on the game while reading the subtitles, and their voice was too small and vague for me to understand. Moreover, dividing my concentration between stealth and listening doesn't seem to be one of my best capabilities, so I ended up not caring about it and focusing more on the gameplay. The texts that were spread across the levels sometimes give a bit of trivia, although I found them to be useless except for the short ones that are related to the level.

[h1]Conclusion[/h1]
Despite starting as a stealth game, [b]Volume[/b] feels more like a puzzle game sometimes. You need to execute certain actions in precision while dodging the enemies around. Sometimes, the window to do the action is small, although there are usually checkpoints nearby to redo what you missed. Levels are also made in a perfect size; it's not too small to make it easy, but not too big to make your head explode from memorizing the layout. Moreover, it's easy to tell where you are supposed to go and where your next objective is. All in all, I enjoyed it a lot despite it not feeling like a stealth game. If you like puzzle and stealth games, you might as well give this game a try.

I guess you've already seen the thumbs down, so let's try to entice you back with the good before we move to the part that made me give it a negative review.

[h1]X-Factor[/h1]
Information... this is the best thing about this game, you'll always be able to see the cone of vision of the enemies as well as how the various walls and chest high spots can hide you from said vision.

[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
The AI is kind of braindead, but not always is this a bad thing, as they'll respond to the various whistles and noises in the same way, enabling you to plan routes ahead.

Each level will let you see a PAR time making you aim to optimize your routing enough to be under that, even if it has no other
And unfortunately, the "good" part is over.

[h1]Nitpicks[/h1]
Your pc WILL whirr up despite being able to handle any other game on max settings, even on the main menu.

Not all inputs work on PS4 controllers and even if it lets you rebind the controls It'll unbind them again as soon as you close the game.

Resetting levels and reloading checkpoints not always works, making it faster to just run against a guard when you want to reset.

The voice acting sparks me something fierce, i don't know if it isn't the generic young guy voice or the overly strong British accent of the AI companion (this is personal taste nothing gameplay related)

[h1]Major Downsides[/h1]
The game has a checkpoint system that doesn't quite work, resetting or being killed places you at the start of such checkpoint but it also resets guard position and items, either forcing you to wait in a game that pushes you for the best time possible, or straight up makes you reset the whole level since some checkpoints place you in a guards field of vision.

The guards once being alerted or seeing you have sometimes weird behaviors, like running in one direction or spazzing out, looking at all directions at once.
This is random, and would be fine if you weren't ranked against other players based on pure luck.
Also being thrown back to a checkpoint puts your usable items on full cooldown despite the level of charge you had when you tagged the checkpoint, and in many cases they are needed to progress so it’s another arbitrary time loss in a speed-stealth game, while some other stuff like laser alerts are not resetted at all.

The story is abysmally boring and with a weak villain that you won't know he's even there until a good 2/3 into it, you are a streamer that replays with a VR headset robberies, that's it.

Some dialogue is voice acted but a lot is found in random logs through the levels, many of them are just a waste of time, an "I hate dogs" with no author no meaning into the story shouldn't even be there.

And even the voice acted parts aren't always reliable, some will suddenly cut short, others will play out of order, even more take longer to play than you beating the level, leaving you at a loss for context.

All and all I can’t recommend this unless you are a stealth buff who can’t get enough.

this game is beautifiul.

The story is minimal. Mostly environmental witha handful of short cutscenes. But the story that's told is one that is worryingly familiar (and inevitable?)

The stealth puzzling is rarely aggravating, and each time you work out a sectionit feels like an 'OF COURSE' moment, rather than one where you are angry that the solution was too obtuse.

Runs flawlessly on deck and i completed this while on Holiday in Portugal.

Ignore the time of 1.9 hours, i put at least 5 hours into this game, maybe more, but for some reason my steam has tracked it wrong.

10/10.

The writing was amazing, and I loved the stylized graphics. The puzzles were pretty good, though some were very "just go through the motions" style and I wasn't a fan of those. I haven't touched the custom/fan made maps yet, though I'm looking forward to it. If you loved the writing from Thomas Was Alone and the other games this team has made, or you love some chill puzzle/stealth games, buy it. It's really good.

sneak through a hundred beautiful low-poly volumes;
the guard's simple, predictable AI provide an intriguing, tense puzzle to think through at the cost of realism;

Ta gra to takie trochę złoto.
Prosta, minimalistyczna, a przy tym maksymalnie wciągająca skradanka z interesującą i momentami zabawną historią. Projekty kolejnych poziomów coraz ciekawsze i przechodzenie ich daje naprawdę sporo czysto gejmingowej frajdy. No i muza kosmos, rety co za klimat robi ta ścieżka dźwiękowa!
Ma wady, Nie jest idealna (np.AI), ale mimo to zachwyca.
Widocznie nie musi być idealna. Polecam mocno.

Volume is a stealth game very similar to Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions. It's sort of the British MGS. The developers state at the beginning that they're very proud of the game and they should be, it's very well designed.

+ The graphics, music and sound effects are simple but pleasant.
+ The controls are good and easy to understand.
+ There's always new skills or enemies as you move on.
+ You can make your own maps.
+ The interactions between Rob and the AI give a nice touch.
- It's possible to run to the end of the level even if you're detected.
- The emails are very boring and pointless.
- Keyboard experience isn't that great.

This is one those games were you immediately start playing and have to figure out what to do. It's the sort of game that I like. The objective is simple, get all diamonds and reach the end of the level, without being detected. You can see the field of vision of your enemies, so you just have to avoid it.

There are plenty of skills you can use to make your goal easier. To keep you from being bored with each set of levels you get a new skill or new enemies show up. The pacing is good, and the skills and enemies are different enough to make it interesting. It's not too hard, or too easy, it has a good balance. If you can caught your AI companion will laugh at you, which encourages to finish the level.

This game has a few minor issues. The biggest one is that you probably want to use a controller. It was obviously designed with a controller in mind. You can get away with a keyboard, but it's just not as good of an experience. There's a bunch of emails you can read in each level but those are very boring and don't add anything to the game. It's kind of weird because the main story has voice and is good. Why not leave it at that?

If the company is interested in improving this game in future releases I would invest in the graphics, characters and try to make it more immersive. The graphics are simple, but pleasant, so it just needs to be detailed from what already exists. The characters are good enough and the voice actors do a good job, but they're all very plain. There's no memorable characteristics. It's not that very immersive either, it feels very game like, but not movie like at all. Metal Gear Solid has much more interesting characters and it feels like a movie from start to finish, while feeling like a game as well. Of course, this is an indie game with a much lower budget, so these are my own improvement tips, not review criticism.

Overall it's an excellent game and I recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of genre.

Lots of fun for such a simple in design game. Played 75 of the levels in about 5.5hrs so on my way to having it done in about 8hrs. Worth it entirely! ^^ If youre into stealthy games, this is a good one with some very enjoyable story going on.

*edit* After completing the game and getting the rest of the achievements some final comments. Loved the game overall just one achievement of "wear a disguise 100 times" was slightly excessive with when you finally get access to it and how many times it appears. So its not a very organic to get one, 50 times would have been more reasonable. Aside from that, it was great and the levels were quite diverse with various levels of challenge.

A nice and simple stealth-puzzle game. Enemies follow very strict paths and the levels are basically about exploiting their simple AI. This way the game is more like a puzzle game, than a stealth game, as almost every level is about precision and timing.

The visuals are equally simplistic, yet beautiful and well realized. The levels are pretty repetitive, so I recommend taking them a few at a time. The grand majority of them are very simple, the game provides quite a few gadgets and tools to mix up the gameplay, however there are barely any levels where more than one gadget is required.

One major gripe is the recharge time of the gadgets. Often you were just sitting in a corner waiting for your ability to recharge. That just feels tedious. The gadgets need to recharge after respawn, resulting in even more waiting.

That being said, the challenges were never boring and overall Volume is a pretty fun game with a decent learning curve and watered down gameplay.

TL,DR: This is an incredible game but it has many bugs and input glitches that make the game stop working.

Got this game several years back, (played on a very not good laptop) it was great. Best stealth game I have played. I was bored the other day, and I saw this game, all dusty on my games shelf on steam. I download it and go change the resolution, reset the story (I remember none of it), and turn the volume down. I play the first level, just a standard movement tutorial, it works fine. I go to play the next level, and no matter if I click on it, scroll up, hit the up arrow on my keyboard, it keeps scrolling down to the first level. Even if I hit the up arrow, then space right after, it still goes down to the first level. I immediately thought, "is my controller with bad drift is plugged in?". No such luck. I check bluetooth for potentially connected keyboards with the down arrow pressed. Nothing. One other person on the discussions had this problem. There was one reply saying to check for connected controllers/keyboards. It is literally making this game unplayable, a game that I had recalled as a generally good and fun time.

EDIT: I have reinstalled the game to play with a new controller (mostly through remote play) and it worked flawlessly. Then, 2 or 3 days later, I come back to play it some more and guess what, the controller did not work. I changed nothing. Same controller, same computer, same install of the game. I restarted my computer many times, nothing. I tried playing another controller game on steam and it worked perfectly. I don't know how to fix it and nobody seems to have an answer that works.

Unfortunately this isn't ultra-wide (32:9) compatible: The UI can result in soft-locking the game, or even requiring a reinstall to reset to windowed mode, and all of the flavor text blocks the central 35% of the scree rendering it almost impossible to play. While it does have plenty of character, a lot of the atmosphere is lost when being forced to play it in a window that's half the size of your monitor.

The game is far too simple mechanically and does not provide an interesting stealth experience. Most levels have only one path to solve them, and none of them are difficult in a 'solving a puzzle' sense. Some levels are outright bad. I don't think it is worth your time nor your money. Most annoyingly, I kept getting a pop-up about problems with the online connection whenever I was in the level select menu. I'd have to close this box every 4-5 seconds. Just why?

There are about 20-30 levels that are varying levels of interesting and satisfying to solve, but the rest is just an exercise in tedium. In the worst case you end up having to wait on cooldowns. Even having to wait on guard patrol cycles, which is a staple in stealth games and normally is fine, becomes annoying when in so many levels you can literally run past them without any issue.

The story is fine, but not nearly as good as Thomas Was Alone.

Other gripes are that it's dumb that the game does not show you where you missed readable text (especially since you apparently need to hit a checkpoint after reading it???) and that your charge does not save at checkpoints (or even just make iyou spawn with full charge to encourage smart resets for faster times).

Overall: had some potential, did not use it enough. Do not purchase unless you are a huge fan of top-down stealth games.

This is a console ported (PS4) 3D rendered low poly 2D top down stealth game where you bumble about various lowfi levels avoiding enemy sight cones and using tired and overdone stealth mechanics like noise distractors to move guards so you can slip behind them, etc etc.

On the plus side you have some graphics tweaks and full controller customisability, so this game meets minimum standards for PC.

What's not so great; The tired, overdone stealth mechanics are accompanied by lazy low poly graphics, whether that was caused by lack of budget to go out and buy some texture packs, or the lack of opportunity to hire an artist who knows how to apply textures to polygons, or maybe just because the console peasant PS4 appliance couldn't handle textures is irrelevant. No matter the cause, the visuals really suck here. Carmack worked out how to put textures on polygons back in the 1990s so there's no real excuses for the poor graphics here. At least it's not a retro pixel/minimalist platformer, those are really the dregs of gaming.

Regardless, tired stealth mechanics and lazy/inadequate graphics, console hangups, very mediocre voice acting all make this a C- effort, it's no wonder it's been shoved into shovelware bundles. Nonetheless there's an eye watering $20 USD price tag for this console ported bundlemeat, the same money gets you DooM Eternal or Borderlands 3 for the same kind of price, and this isn't close to the same league. Those games have textures.

tl;dr almost fun gameplay ruined by constant waiting for items to charge.

I'm torn on Volume. At first, it has really nice stylized graphics and arcadey gameplay that comes really close to being great.

The first couple dozen levels are so are fast and tense stealth gaming bliss. It takes the feeling of slipping just behind guards in MGS and boils it down to its most bare elements with a focus on speed. It comes off sort of like VR missions but faster.

However, after you start getting more items, it starts to show its blemishes. See, these items have really slow recharge times. It takes maybe a few seconds. That alone is not enough to ruin the game, although having such slow items in an otherwise speedy game brings it down a bit. However, when you respawn or pick up an item for the first time, item charge gets reset to zero. That alone is not enough to ruin the game either, although it is at least sometimes annoying.

What really ruins it is that Volume has multiple checkpoints per level that allow you to fail frequently and get a better time. These checkpoints reset your item charge when you respawn at them. In addition, you can only hold one item, and often levels are tight and designed around challenges that are impassable without a certain item. What you're left with is failing regularly, then waiting a few seconds for your item to charge before you can do literally anything.

Waiting in stealth games can be fun, but there's no tension or danger. You're just waiting in perfect safety for your item to charge and nothing else. It's the same as if it you took 5 seconds to respawn every time you die at random checkpoints.

This combined with the fact that it's a speed game means you'll be resetting levels constantly. You'll be coming into a checkpoint with a full charge set up for a good time, make a little mistake, and have to reset the whole level and throw away the checkpoint. Permanent failure isn't a bad thing in a game, but when you're just trying to work on your time and you randomly have to reset depending on what item you got and the checkpoint position, it becomes out of your control, and losing control isn't fun.

Even if you're not working on your speed, it completely breaks the flow of the game. Sometimes I'll reset the level just so I can keep playing rather than wait around. Waiting around for an item to recharge after using it can also be frustrating, because you don't just want to respawn if you make a mistake with certain items.

A much better solution would be to have checkpoints perfectly capture your state - your item charge, the enemy positions, etc. - or to have faster charge times. I'm sure the designers could have figured something out.

I'm sure there's a reason for this design flaw. However, whatever it is, it's not worth sacrificing the tight gameplay of some levels.

It might sound like I'm nitpicking, but it really is a constant annoyance. I feel like I'm having trouble painting just how frustrating it is when you're actually playing. At least half of the levels at this point in the game are designed around items with slow recharge rates. Every time I get a level with a fast item, I have a blast. Every time it's a slow item, I can't help but groan. It really comes down to complete inconsistency in the pace of the game. I really thought I found a tight new game I could throw on while listening to music or podcasts and chill out, but at this point I don't know if I'll come back to Volume. I have a tough time enjoying a game with such great potential ruined by one glaring flaw.

I'm sure some players will disagree and still find lots of enjoyment out of Volume. I think if I read this review, I might still want to check it out, so I'm not sure who to recommend it to. I'm not an impatient gamer. I like tough games; Dark Souls, Mega Man, N++. This goes beyond artificial difficulty - there's not even any perceived difficulty, it's just waiting.

There's also extensive lore in the game. It's also possible to skip all of it if you want.

Another Bithell gem. Puzzly stealth mechanics get remixed in a campaign of 100 mini-scenarios with increasingly clever layouts, tools, and variants. The "plot" isn't the most groundbreaking study in future-dystopian fiction, but it always feels good to stick it to the fascists, even in a simulation. Plus the polygonal minimalism looks sweet.

This one lost me real quick. You got your "view cone" probably best way to describe it. But I can go literally go right beside the guy, almost shoulder to shoulder and his peripheral vision is that atrocious he can't see me? The spoken and written dialogue just didn't do it for me at all either. To be fair, maybe just the stealth genre isn't my thing.
