[Review for the Ultra Remix version of the game]

This game blew my expectations out of the water. I was expecting a good game, but it turned out to be a great one! It's a beat 'em up/turn based hybrid that's easy to pick up with deceptive depth and nuance if you want to master. Your 3 playable characters fit into the Brawler, Grappler, and Specialist archetypes and are kitted out with counters, parries, dodge rolls, OTGs, and revenge meters on top of the build-a-combo mechanics that makes this game feel really special. If you're a fan of fighting game, there's a lot to appreciate!

Outside of the gameplay you're treated to story that's equal parts cheesy, campy, and social commentary set to a banging chip tune soundtrack. It can be over the top and long winded at times, but it was an enjoyable ride overall!

Definitely worth the purchase and playtime with the Ultra Remix DLC (which adds 2 chapters worth of story, enemies, and mechanics it's the definitive way to play!)

I've played enough to form a solid opinion and have a good idea on the trajectory of this game.

Originally found out about this game through Limited Run and then picked it up sale here for $2. On the surface, this seems like the type of game I would glance at for a second or buy at part of a bundle, but then never play. What caught my attention was the design for Lisa Santiago. Had it not been for her or had her design been toned down as usually is the case for these games, I probably would not have given it a chance.

For the game itself... it is good enough.

You move across an over world similar to a game board or Super Mario Bros 3. Each square you move usually contains an NPC to talk to, automatic save/restore point, a dumpster to search for items or an enemy. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of branching paths beyond a few optional enemies that give you items.

The battles often open up with a conversation cut scene between you and the enemy. The humor here is a bit on the urban side and can personally say some of the events are true to life. When the battle starts, the game shifts to a one screen side scroll arena where you fight the enemy.

Game uses an ATB type system, something you would see in games like Vagrant Story. When an enemy is in range you pull up a menu, then you pick which moves you want, then you walk away while you regain stamina. I don't mind, but it isn't for everyone, more so if you are expecting a traditional beat'em up.

Enemies aren't too specific. Some respond to different types of moves than others. There are a few enemies that just run or ride a bike and you have to knock them off. Those enemies have the typical problem where you end up getting hurt by being in front of it while trying to attack. Some other elements are introduced such as the occasional weapon which don't alter the game play much.

So while I don't mind the ATB system, what this game really could have benefited from is a growth system. Despite the RPG elements, you don't actually level up your character or moves. Instead, after every area, all your characters get preset bonus to their stats. You do get items, but rarely needed to use them. I've heard the game gets a lot harder, so maybe that will change. There are also no shops to buy items or weapons, you just find them.

Graphics and music are great! This easily could have been an NES game back in the day with some minor alterations.

Probably not saying anything the other reviews are saying whether they are good or bad. What I would say is that this is an enjoyable game in short bursts because the gameplay gets a little repetitive. I typically play for 10-30 minute sessions, then exit out once I hit a save point. It does hold my interest enough to continue to the end, but maybe not the type of game to spend all day on.

The enemy counter mechanics and just accuracy rates in general are so miserably implemented that it completely drains any enjoyment I was having with what I thought was a decent combat system that hadn't been seen since Hybrid Heaven. There is no counterplay to setting up a normal attack string and then getting a boot to the head on the first hit and losing your resources anyway. Any of the grappling is the same but worse, they at least warn you about that part though. I could go on about smaller stuff, but none of it is as egregious as that facet of combat balance. The developers seem very passionate about what they've got here so it sucks that I just can't gel with it.

I mentioned Hybrid Heaven and at the end of writing this I just realized that game had the exact same problem with grappling. Some things never change!

Jogo super divertido com uma proposta ótima de fazer um rpg/briga de rua, num primeiro momento parece estranho, mas funciona super bem devido as inúmeras mecânicas e golpes de cada personagem, alem disso a história tem um humor super acido e cheio de referências que diverte bastante. Alem disso o jogo se encontra todo em Português o que facilita a comprensão para brasileiros.

Como ponto negativo achei chato ter que comprar uma expansão para terminar a história do jogo e na expansão algumas partes se tornam muito longas e os dialógos cansativos, mas ainda assim é uma experiencia que vale muito comprar.

Странная игра)) Хочется даже негативный отзыв написать, но не буду всё же. Хотя за ужасный машинный перевод на русский – стоило бы.
Мне понравилась концепция – сделать этакий «пошаговый beat-em-up». Ну а что, обе части Punch Club я прошёл с удовольствием, хотя это другое немного, конечно. Ну или вот есть ещё Fights in Tight Spaces...
Но в TiBC как-то всё совсем печально и однообразно. Просто последовательность практических одинаковых боёв. Да, персонажей три, а противники разные, но от этого геймплей и даже тактика почти не меняются. Просто скучно становится…
Местный сюжет – отдельная песня. Это какой-то набор кринжовых постметаироничных повесточных диалогов. Не скажу что это плохо, многие из них довольно забавные. Опять же, много отсылок и пародий. Но это всё явно на любителя.
В общем, не особо я понял эту игру. Первый акт прошёл, но дальше играть никакого желания нет. Просто нет понимания, что в этой игре именно должно цеплять) Хотя кому-то мб зайдёт…

After finishing Treachery In Beatdown City, all I can say is that this game SUCKS, and it is one of the worst games I've ever played. This game has so many issues that it would be impossible to point them all out here, but I'll try:
Firstly, let's talk about combat. It is not a usual beat 'em up game. The developers tried something different, and it's more like a turn-based game. This combat system ruins all the fun and enjoyment. Would you like to play a game where, most of the time, you are waiting for a bar to fill up so you can execute a move? If you answered yes, then go ahead and buy this game, but if you answered no, stay away. You wait for a bar to fill up and gather FP so you can pull off some powerful moves, but it's a miracle if you can hit enemies with these powerful moves. Because enemies counter your stronger moves, all your resources are gone. The whole combat system is fundamentally flawed. As if this isn't enough, the game introduces different mechanics after mechanics, different enemy types after enemy types. It unnecessarily complicates things. It turns the combat system into f*cking rocket science. This dog sh*t game could have been ten times better if it had a simple combat system.
Secondly, the writing. OH MY F*CKING GOD! The writing isn't just bad. It's unbelievably bad. The dialogue tries to be funny, but fails. It is CRINGE! The last act of the game is a pure nightmare. It was just text after text, dialogue after dialogue. The writer thought of himself as Hideo Kojima, I guess. I thought the latest Disney shows had bad writing. Those shows are Shakespeare compared to this junk.
Thirdly, the graphics. In-game graphics are decent, but the cutscenes are eye sore. Not a single character looks like a human. They are hideous and vomit-inducing. Seriously though, what's the point of designing these characters so ugly?
Overall, this whole game is a dumpster fire and beyond saving. You might be thinking, Isn't there anything nice about this game? The answer is no. God-awful combat, vomit-inducing graphics, dialogue that is more cringe-worthy than My Hero Academia fan fiction. Mix it all together, and you get a sh*t show. This sh*t show is called Treachery In Beatdown City

The game isn't bad by any means, but it was way too repetitive for me to finish it. The overworld is almost pointless and the game really just boils down to walking from one fight to another with the same enemy types and same strategies over and over again. Once you figure out an optimal series of moves, there is almost no reason to deviate from that and breeze through most fights. As for the dialogue, it is occasionally funny but more often than not, it overstays its welcome too, constantly making the same types of social commentary jokes over and over again.

If it was just a quick 2 hour game for a few bucks, I feel it would be a much easier sell

So, 3% of players have beaten the second boss. And there's a reason for this.

Treachery is a semi turn based brawler. You navigate a city map, get into scuffles, and during fights you can pause time and program in strings of attacks.

Problem #1 - Nearly everything you do can be countered, and enemy counter rates are based on their current hp. This means you need to whittle them with low damage high acc attacks before you start opening up, but sometimes they just counter the low damage high acc attack and it's rng.

Problem #2 - Resources are limited, maps are big, and movement is ungodly slow. You might think I'm exaggerating, but half of the reason I burned out of this game on my second hour (and 97% of players burned out before then) is because walking between two points on the map takes a genuinely comical amount of time. Backtracking to grab more items from a side route feels like a punishment for being thorough.

Problem #3 - The writing feels like an episode of Archer, but only in a bad way. And there's a ton of it. And the provocation for most fights is that there's a character being annoying. This means you're spending most of your time reading, and you're specifically reading about characters being annoying. If it bothers you even a little, it'll wear through faster than flesh touching pavement at 75mph.

Despite all of this, I do think there's a good *idea* in here. A lot of thought has gone into the mechanics, and if the game clicks with you there's a ton of content. It did not click with me, and it did not click with 97% of players, but who knows. Maybe you'll be the one.

[h2]Finally found the old school nostalgia hit I've been looking for![/h2]

Treachery in Beatdown City takes me back to the days of Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Bad Dudes, and all the other NES-era beat 'em ups with some OG Final Fantasy under the hood to create a sweet 8-bit fighting RPG. For the first time in literal decades, I found a game that [b][i]feels[/i][/b] exactly like ones I'd played in the 80s, but also has new elements added that make it interesting and fun.

The gameplay starts out with basic moves and combos that are unique to each of the three playable characters. Aside from certain story-mode fights, you can choose any character/fighting style and rock your enemies in a number of different ways. You can find items along your journey that will aid you in battle. The writing is extremely tongue-in-cheek, never takes itself seriously, lampoons just about everyone and everything, and (again) really feels like writing you'd find in any old NES game.

As the story progresses, the complexity of battles and combos ramps up alongside a level of difficulty that is expertly dialed in. Fights start out very easy to allow you to find your way, but become increasingly more challenging. While the going gets quite tough toward the end, nothing in this game ever feels impossible. If you died, it was your fault. I like this because the game is a challenging enough to be engaging - it never gets boring because it's too easy nor does it get frustratingly difficult of sadism.

In addition to great balance/difficulty, I have to shout out the items and inventory system. Each item is single-use and you can only find them along the way, preventing item hoarders like me from stockpiling ungodly amounts of items and ruining the gameplay balance. Instead, players have to be judicious about when and where to use items to maximum effect or when to take the L and rotate to another character. By the end, I had [i]just enough[/i] items on hand to beat the last few encounters.

The addition of hidden combo techniques keeps fights interesting as well. You can inflict additional status effects that are more or less effective depending on enemy types. The list of possible moves accumulated by end allows for a staggering amount of different combinations. I still haven't found all of the hidden techniques as of the time of this review and something I plan to do using the chapter select unlocked by beating the game.

The banter between characters will either land with you or not. Some jokes made me laugh out loud and some fell a bit flat, but the overall style and content kept me entertained throughout the whole game and was another area where I felt the nostalgia shine through. It felt like I was reading text that would be in an 80s game: direct and to the point, somewhat ham-fisted and goofy, but updated with modern references. If it's not your jam, you can always just skip the text, but there are some good gems in there worth reading.

Soundtrack is bangin!

Lastly, this game is perfect on the Steamdeck. Even though TiBC is not fully verified as of the time of this review, I had [b]zero[/b] issues playing on the deck. The turn-based nature of the combat in this game made it easy to enter a game-and-chill flow state on couch with some TV on in the background, making it a ultimate relaxing nostalgic gaming experience.

This is one of those ideas that looks terrible on paper but somehow actually works in practice. Instead of taking a beat em up and shoving RPG mechanics into it, it's an RPG with beat em up mechanics worked in. Really fun, original and engaging once you get the core mechanics down. This isn't something where the ideas are just thrown on a dart board randomly either. The way difficulty scales in a way that forces you to adapt to different strategies and fighting styles is all by design, showing a lot of thought went into the process. Hope to see a sequel or further installments one day. This game's a gem.

this game should definitely receive more love. it has a unique style of gameplay, combining beatemup and rpg elements with old fashioned pixel graphics and new fashioned story elements

the game its not without its flaws, dialogues can drag quite a bit sometime (specially in the end) and if you weren't paying attention to the gameplay mechanics, you'll be frustrated at how the same tactic wont work on all enemies (duh!)

overall, this is a worthwhile purchase, and a recommended play if you want something new and interesting from the indie department

I picked up "Treachery in Beatdown City" after playing it at PAX West. I really enjoy the battle system and twist on the gameplay mechanics, it's definitely different than any normal kind of beat-em-up game.

My one big criticism is that cloud saves aren't supported for the title (yet?) - I hope this can be added in the future so I can switch between playing it on my Steam Deck and PC.

Don't play this if you're looking for an arcade game - in fact, I'd say this game makes much more sense to RPG players than beat-em-up fans. What if a beat em up was also a turn based RPG? Guess what; it is! There's a jerky NPC named Ugly John and you get to beat him up! In the tutorial! This game is wild and weird and great. I'm kinda upset at myself that I haven't played it more (I initially played it on Amazon but it was good enough that I had to just buy it for real), but the latest dlc/update has me pretty stoked to remedy that.

I also have to recommend listening to the interview w/ the dev on the Eggplant podcast. Super interesting and insightful!

P.S., This one is easily in my top five all time best game names pantheon. Tbh, i'm having trouble thinking of any games with better names right now.

Been a long road for this game (longer if you backed via Kickstarter like I did nearly a decade ago, so there's my disclosure), but it's been worth the wait and there's still more coming.

This game is a beat-em-up with a twist - most of your actions and moves are executed in a turn-based style, via a menu. This gives the game an incredibly fresh feeling, with some deep strategy at play given your moves require both action bars (may not be the real name, sorry) and fight points (FP). Are you willing to risk a low accuracy but high damage move against an enemy you know can block? Or would you rather play safe with grapples, even though this enemy can break your combo and counter them? You also have three characters, with their own playstyles, strengths and weaknesses.

I don't entirely care about the story the game is telling, but the writing is excellent and downright brilliant in individual moments (the devs using NPCs on the overworld to deliver some funny meta-commentary is one highlight). The music was done by Inverse Phase, who can nail these retro-style chiptunes soundtracks - this one is no exception.

The most recent update has improved the game tremendously, added more content and seems like it's just the start of a lot more. Even if it isn't, this game is well worth your time as is.

From the anthemic slogan "Beatdown City -- we gon' whoop your ass!" to the epic trailers and artstyle-defying promotional material, Treachery in Beatdown City forebodes a world full of pixelated punches.

Each fight is presented as a vignette between one of three playable characters, and various enemies each personified with a name and archetype. Beatdown City has many types of foes, including bicyclists, preps, cheerleaders, grifters, gym junkies and rent-a-cops.

It follows good game design by easing in mechanics, enemy types, and difficulty. With that said, the "tutorial" is a tad too long, arguably it could be cut to a third of its length and still be effective. The multitude of short battles (each 1-5 minutes in length) can feel repetitive, but the variety in enemies and tactics required in overcoming them keep it fresh.

A special note to keep in mind: one time my save file got corrupted via Steam Cloud, I let the dev know, and they sent me a backup save file. That was incredibly kind of them to do.

Outside of fighting, the writing's some of the most hilarious American social commentary you've seen in a video game. Nobody's spared the rod of "social justice", everyone gets whacked with it a few times for good measure.

This is definitely a love letter to older games and it's made with passion. It's neither too difficult or too easy, and its unique charm in the realm of beat-em-ups will keep you coming back for another fight.

A mecânica de luta de jogo é bem interessante e divertida, queria que o ritmo fosse um pouco mais frenético, mas até onde cheguei no jogo eu curti bastante.

O único porém agora é esperar pelos próximos episódios do jogo, só tem o prólogo e o primeiro episódio, e eu não tava sabendo que era um jogo por episódios, então foi meio broxante chegar no final do primeiro capítulo pra receber uma mensagem de "continua no próximo episódio"...

Especialmente pq parece que esse jogo saiu tem quase uns 3 anos, então eu não sei quando o próximo episódio vai aparecer :P

Interesting combo mechanics using menu. It would help to know exactly how FP (fight points) are generated other than "strike hits and you may get some" but fight flows relatively well. As long as you can generate FPs somehow, fights are actually kinda fun.

An issue is that the grapple resist mechanic on enemies not nearly dead makes grapple basically finshers and strikes are what you will be using most of the time so the strike guy is clearly the most viable one and the grapple guy the "joke" one. This may change if grapples are more effective in the future from the start of the fight and not just when guys are almost dead anyway. The fact that resisted grapples waste LOTS of FPs do not help at all.

This is actually a game that I enjoyed playing but it is simply too short for its price tag and feels unfinished with the amount of content it currently have (despite having its release almost 3 years ago). Devs seem to be working on updates so it may change at some point and would be glad to recommend it then but for now, it just feels like a very promissing (paid) demo.

Treachery in Beatdown City combines turn-based RPG strategy with fast-paced beat-em-up action, and it works really well. If you're at all interested in the premise of the game, it's well worth your time and money.

Right out the gate this game oozes charm with its bright, retro graphics and its witty, satirical dialogue. The plot is a bit silly: President Orama is kidnapped by Terrorist Ninjas, and a group of ragtag street fighters team up to investigate what's really going on. There's nothing too serious going on here, but you will encounter characters and scenarios which touch upon the problems of modern-day America, particularly what it's like living in a big city. So while the conflicting tone may put some people off, I think it works pretty well. There's a few moments where the dialogue's a bit over-the-top, or the comedy just doesn't land, but I found myself enjoying what the game had to say despite the humor not landing.

My main critique of the game as it stands is that the gameplay can get boring fast. There's not enough variation in the core gameplay loop to keep interest for very long. Despite this, the gameplay is still pretty solid. It's satisfying pulling off a big combo, or going for the risky hit just to finish your opponent off early. What doesn't work for me is that there's not a lot of enemy variation, and you're essentially doing the same thing over and over.

There's four main enemy types: brawlers, dirty-fighters, grapplers, and supporters. Supporters will mostly run around and cheer until they've got nobody left to support, and then they become brawlers. That leaves you with essentially three enemy types, and while the game sort of presents this as a rock/paper/scissors system where you should grapple the brawlers, beat down the grapplers, and outsmart the dirty-fighters, I really just did the same thing to every single enemy. All you need to do is get a big combo off and then you're golden, you'll have so many hits coming at an enemy that they'll just die. On the contrary, grappling is REALLY strong but REALLY risky, I found that it was 50/50 whether or not my big grapple combo would land or not. This is what contributed to me getting a bit bored of the game after playing it for ~30 minutes.

BUT, it is a lot of fun in short bursts. There's enough strategy there to keep your interest, there are some challenging fights where you need to make sure you're using the right attacks, and each character is fun to play since they have their own advantages and disadvantages. Because of that, I'd highly recommend picking this up if you're interested in a blend of turn-based RPG strategy and beat-em-up fun. It goes together like peanut butter and jelly!

I feel like I should point out that as of writing this review, this game has been out for well over 2 years and there's a second episode that's yet to be released. I'm not sure when that episode will come out but I've got a feeling that it'll provide more enemy variety as well as some improvements to the core gameplay loop. The second episode will be a free update to this game, so I'm more than happy to play & review it whenever it comes out.

Achei que ficaria perdido com as mecânicas mas a forma orgânica que o tutorial foi colocado pelos desenvolvedores fez a game play fluir de forma gostosa, aprovado!

Very dissapointing. Turn based fight system is quite decent, controls simple but everything else is bad. To put it simply, if you expected some 80s fighitng game story with you'll be dissapointed. If you're a latino or black person living in big city in US and you feel opressed by white people, perhaps you'll enjoy this woke game. In the very first fith you fight white guy that insults you, than of course there is a white milionaire that is mean to lations. The main latino woman character want's to solve "him" with violence (how surprising). The second person you beat up is profiteering asian man (So it's ok to insult asians in this game huh?).

The story overall is boring, you just follow the woke context and you'll know what will happen every time + you have to suffer through long and super boring dialogs.

Bought this game because of the promo song. The content release so far (Ep 1) took me 4-5 hours with lots of laughing breaks, looking forward to more episodes! I think it's well worth buying and playing as-is, though.

The gameplay is a really interesting mix of fighting game and RPG mechanics, with position and spacing, combo bonuses and momentum, and dynamic resource management. I was constantly gauging my FP vs. action points to pick moves, decide whether to pummel one enemy or knock them down and switch targets, or maybe keep something back for defense. Once you get the hang of keeping momentum, the game is pretty easy- I had to take a 2nd try at 2-3 fights but generally rolled over the idiots. Struggled to get Brad rolling with his low accuracy and vulnerability to counters compared to Lisa and Bruce, but landing a big throw was always awesome.

The dialog is hilarious, the enemies are oh so punchable, and the gameplay is unique and cool. Two thumbs up.

Despite not mentioning it anywhere on the store page, this game isn't finished. It's carved up into episodes, and only the first episode is available. So it just ends abruptly after a few hours.

Game itself is a great idea I wanted to like, but the execution is meh. It's repetitive, and kind of annoying; you spend a lot of time waiting for your bar to fill, then try to unleash a devastating combo only to have the enemy counter your first attack and still lose all your resources. There's also a HUGE emphasis on dialogue, which is occasionally funny but not nearly enough to justify how much of it there is.

I really wanted to like this game, but the whole reason I bought it was for the wrestling references and moves, and the grappler character is completely hamstrung by the combat system. There is no reason to use Grapples because you will be countered 90% of the time. I understand the mechanic that grapples do big damage so you have to wear down your opponent before you can use them (basic wrestling psychology), but I feel the implementation is not balanced at all. At least give the grappler more wrestling related strikes (clothesline, big boot, dropkick).

Overall it's a cool idea but needs to be balanced better.

Combat system doesn't feel very good. I guess the expectation is to be able to press attack to punch as a beat em up, but the turn based system really kills the flow. Not enjoying it. Would probably enjoy it more as a straight up turn based system where I didn't have to real time worry about spacing and dexterity speed in conjunction with a non transparent turn based wait on actions. if I have to wait my turn anyway would have more fun not having to time out the long delays between actions. Would skip this one.

I love the idea, the music, the look, (some of) the humor, and the game play mechanics are fun. However, the controls are horrible, and there is no way to remap them. The button set up is just awkward and follows no standard gaming conventions. So, the game ends up just being annoying, as you try to navigate clunky menus with counter-intuitive controls. I really wanted to like it, and played it many times, but always end up turning off after about 15 minutes. (I play with a keyboard.)

Twenty-second read. Combines the forces of the masked Ryu (Ninja Gaiden (NES)) and Final Fantasy VII with a side-scroller brawler (Streets of Rage, Double Dragon) in an 80s setting similar to Final Fight (Arcade). The world map borrowed from Super Mario 3 (SNES) and the political themes alas Orama etc. stretch the games' twenty-dollar price tag over a twenty year conversion period; does anybody really think noone had thought of making a turn-based, side-scrolling beat-em up game 🎮? Is just a game that has been politicized openly yet in enigmatic ways with a cast of characters that appear to be part of a Blackmirror (Netflix) sequel. Just my two cents.

An excellent, uniquely enjoyable game. Imagine someone had the idea of making a game where Streets of Rage was just the mana-harvesting part of a turn-based battle system. Then imagine that they actually committed to making that game, not as a simple novelty or parody but as a fully-realized game that stands on its own. Then imagine that that game included a fleshed-out world filled with extremely current social commentary and satire. That's Treachery in Beatdown City. This is not just an homage to old arcade/16-bit brawlers, but a triumph on its own in terms of both writing and innovative mechanics. Because the battle system is so ambitious, it's not quite perfect, and someone in the future will probably come along and further evolve these mechanics, but this game is an easy recommendation to anyone who likes retro games, old-school brawlers, turn-based combat systems, and storytelling that is both funny and relevant.

Great game. Excited for Episode 2. I dont understand why I cant use Counter eventhough I have the requirements. Most occasions its grayed out which is confusing to me.

Somewhat short right now (I managed to get to the end of Chapter 1 in 4 hours), but still an enjoyable beat'em up/turn-based strategy RPG.

The custom combo system, while a bit tough to understand at first (and the fact you don't start fights at full FP means you'll be starting nearly all fights the same way), does lead to fun when you can chain several powerful techniques together to pummel your enemies with a hail of blows. I've only had a similar experience with two other games, Slay the Spire and Library of Ruina, so it's nice to see another one that's added to the list.

One thing I have to take issue with is the rates at which enemies counter attacks, especially grabs. Despite my best attempts to weaken foes before grabbing them, occasionally I would get countered even when the enemy's health was rather low. I recall one time I got countered by an enemy who only had 1 HP left... They still got KO'ed in the end, but I wasn't too happy.

Still, the game itself is on the easier end of things despite the counters - healing items are rather common.

The levels are mostly linear, with the occasional side route to pick up items with.

Somewhat worrying is the fact the end of Chapter 1 promised a new chapter in about May (Though I'm not sure I remember the message quite right). Still, there's not much to do about that besides wait and have faith.

While the price is a bit much, the game still has a good deal of heart. If you're into RPGs, or beat 'em ups, this might be worth a try.

Awesome game and truly unique. It's pretty rare for American minority creators have access to the resources required to create video games; and even rarer for a game to provide explicit social commentary on the casual everyday racism and misogyny that minorities & women encounter in the US. If you are a black or brown person and live in the US, you will find this game's social commentary to be hilariously refreshing (without being too cynical).

At first glance you might think Treachery in Beatdown City is an average beat em up game that aims to remind you of the days back when. And in some rights that is true, but to say it is only that would degrade the game and what the devs have achieved here. Beatdown City manages to blend that beat em up style with a semi turned-based RPG to create an entirely new type of experience. It's fluid, allows for multiple combo variations. Add that in with multiple enemy variants and combat never becomes dull. With a funny story and amazing writing to go along, this is definitely a game worth picking up.

So far its been good and fun. Feels like mashup from the ole Double Dragon of NES and Final Fantasy turn battle game. You walk in "world map" like in Super Mario 3, and there's enemy waiting to battle. When you reach the enemy, the screen turn into closeup sideway look of the map and you can move freely. When you want to start to attack the enemy you get bunch of option from light punch, kick etc. Each of the attack have an Action Point much like x-com game. I can't get the detail but there's more to it. You just have to play the game your self.

I dig the art style. Too bad it doesn't support ultrawide but that's Ok for me. Playing in 21:9 there's a blackbar on each side of the screen.

I haven't finished the game so I can give my full review about all the enemy type and character's move set. But I really like the game loop mechanic so I want to give it an early review.

I'm one of the backer of this game and I'm glad it was what I expected, a classic mix of my favorite genre.

Love this game. I like scrolling beat 'em ups, but I always feel a sense of shallowness and repetitiveness after a while - the narratives always feel kinda optional, and after a while the combat feels samey.

Enter Treachery in Beatdown City, which brings some RPGness into the mix and gives the genre the much needed longevity I've been missing. There's a whole world map to explore, tons of character dialogue that is sharp and funny and dripping with satirical social commentary. Hell, I heard about this game through a website encouraging people to support Black developers, following the killing of George Floyd, and right away in the first few areas there's a scene depicting police brutality. It's a great game, but also important insight for white players like myself to see how far racism is etched into society.

The game uses an RPG-like combat system: you can punch enemies outright, but the meat of the combat comes from dipping into the menus to choose and chain together a wide variety of moves (whose roster increases as you level up) in interesting ways. Navigating the menus pauses the game, and makes you stop and strategise your next move, considering the enemy type and your own health and action points.

That might sound overwhelming, but fights, at least so far, are nearly always one on one. It's not technically a "scrolling" beat-'em-up in that the level doesn't scroll with you as you progress. You traverse from point to point on the world map, and at the destination enter into a one-on-one fight (sometimes two-on-one so far, and looking at the screenshots, even-more-on-one later) - but it's not Street Fighter 2; you still have the depth of the screen to move in and out of, and move around. So the fights play out more like the Duel/Battle mode in Streets of Rage 2 (and possibly in the new SOR4, though I've not unlocked that mode yet - I'm actually spending more time on this game instead). Position is very important, as you sometimes need to step back while your action points recharge, though be careful you don't get attacked from behind!

I don't know how long the game is, but it feels like the story is only just beginning; and looking at the screenshots, there are clearly new enemy types, locations and moves I haven't even seen yet. The story is pulling me along, and I want to keep playing to see where it goes. I've just reached unlocking the third playable character, and each time the story swaps them in you get another point of view on the story; I genuinely feel like I'm getting to know these people. It definitely feels more like a long-play RPG than an arcadey beat'-em-up, and that's a positive turn for the genre in my eyes.

The 8-bit graphics look gorgeous on my 4k monitor, and the music and sound effects are totally on point.

I really don't have any areas I would have liked to see improvements. At first I missed the use of WASD for directional control, but it soon becomes clear the game's keyboard layout is well-suited, with arrow keys for movement, and the WASD area used for navigating the combat menus. The subtitles in the intro movie were too fast for me to read, though I got the gist of the backstory; with repeat watches though (it plays each time you launch the game), I was soon able to read them. (The subtitles in-game are player-forwarded which is cool.)

The tutorial prompts are extensive, and even now 1.7 hours in they are still teaching me new things. But they are drip fed at a good pace for me to take everything in, and coming back to the game each time I feel like I can remember what to do - the info has clearly sunk in.

It's a blast of nostalgia to classic scrolling beat-em-ups, with a modern genre-bending and social sensibilities.

Beatdown City's gonna whoop yo ass. If there's a downside, it's that I played through the game in a day, but I really do like the combat system. It makes button mashing useless, turning what could have been a twitchy mess into a beautiful strategic masterpiece. Okay, not really a strategic masterpiece, but it's pretty sweet.

I do kind of wish that the advantages/disadvantages were slightly more influential. I love the way weapons are handled. Costing more FP to use them and limiting defensive actions focuses the combat towards disarm. And it feels really awesome to throw a Mexican Suplex on some dumbass fool stupid enough to get in your way.

Of course the social commentary and unique comedic voice is really what sets the game apart. I enjoyed beating up people who deserve beating up, and not having to worry about having moral quandaries about whether I'm the good guy while satisfying my virtual violence quota.

Highly recommend. Can't wait until the sequel is released.

Treachery in Beatdown City is the most refreshingly unique take on retro-aesthetic beat-em-ups I’ve had the pleasure of playing in quite some time. Both for its gameplay and message. If you enjoyed series like River City or Streets of Rage, or perhaps even oldschool RPGs like the original Final Fantasy, then the turn-based combo-creating nature of Beatdown City should prove an interesting, and if you’re anything like me, satisfying addition to the format.
Described in a few words, Beatdown City is creative and cathartic. It rewards you for doing more than just the barebones of combos, with the ability to chain more moves and take down obnoxious people more effectively. Its retro aesthetic is realized flawlessly, with a kickass chiptune soundtrack to boot.
The game is priced at $20. Some may see as a little high given the repetitive nature of gameplay and shorter campaign, around six hours for the first and currently only episode. I personally thought the experience was worth the cost. Especially given that the future addition will be free. And I’m always willing to cut more slack about cost to indie devs, in the name of supporting their lives.

There really isn't any other game like this; that was true when it was a Kickstarter demo(which I backed) and it's still the main reason to play it. It is as straightforward and linear as your usual Final Fight or Streets of Rage style game, and it has most of the familiar elements from those games, but when you attack, you can plan a combo with an RPG-style menu. That's it. That's really the main proposition here. If that sounds too niche or gimmicky for you, then you may want to steer clear, because it isn't going to give you a giant open world or minigames or other trappings, and it won't blow you away with graphical fidelity either.

But if you're curious about the mechanic, you probably want to know, "how does that work?" Well, it's a kind of push-your-luck system where you have both actions and attack power that regenerate over time. If you use your actions on weaker attacks, your chances of hitting are higher, and when you land a combination, you get a bonus that builds up your actions and attack power faster, so you can start to mix in your strong finishers if you use the right pace and weaken your opponents first. Then add in some of the usual RPG roles and status effects, adapted to brawler tropes(counter-attacks, grappling moves, charge-ups, weapons, biker gangs, etc.) and you have the gist of the combat.

Like any good fight system, it's easy to learn and hard to master, with lots of matchup details to consider. Even past the four hour mark, the depth of it all is still growing on me, and the game continues introducing stuff at a careful pace which has given me a good share of "aha" moments. The game is fairly generous with healing items and even makes sure to have you try every character's playstyle by having occasional "grudge fights", so you never feel like you're missing out or are uncertain of how well you did - it's easy to tell if you played a fight optimally or not by looking at how much damage you took. It's all combat, but it's very good, tightly designed combat and each fight does something different.

The NES-style graphics and sound are mostly iconic and cartoonish, but distinctive; like many beat-em-ups, the game can barely take its plot seriously and most of the dialogue is over-the-top, which works well with the aesthetic. At the same time it manages a very authentic and heartfelt portrayal of the diversity, personalities and politics of the real NYC, and so while a lot of the game's writing is typical scenario-building filler - it labors hard to contrive reasons for encountering the same few dozen people over and over and fighting them - the moments where the characterization touches on the real are uniquely compelling, and the characters have grown on me over the course of my playthrough.

"What if Double Dragon used Fallout's VATS system?" or "What if Slay the Spire was a beat-em-up?" All that and a bag of chiptunes.
