So as my name implies, I was definitely hyped for this game. Bought it, played it, hated it. Held out hope for pretty much all of 2020 as the devs constantly told us on their discord "things are coming, we promise. We're not taking the money and running!"
Well, they took the money and ran. In fact, I'm willing to bet that if any of them are even still running their discord server that they probably to this day still say "things are coming, big trust pls."

This title was finally cheap enough that I picked it up. I recall it having some limited hype in the MMORPG space many years ago. After playing it for a bit, I can tell why it never became popular.
This is a buy-to-play multiplayer online RPG. It's not massive. No huge shared world map. Just dungeons to run that you can run with others. The dungeons aren't terribly designed but aren't all that interesting either. The combat is what really hampers the experience. This combat feels very disconnected and weak.
It's also apparently abandoned so it's not getting any better.
Getting a copy of The Yellow King is better than getting the yellow fever, but in a world of more than just those 2 options it's best to say no to both.
Came out with updates for all of 3 months before dropping the game, nice.
Good ol' dungeon crawler, lots of love was poured into this game. Solid yet simple graphics, daily cycling cosmetics, interesting AI, secret walls EVERYWHERE and randomized loot drops keeps things interesting. Bright colored treasure make goblin brain happy.
Necropolis-flavored gameplay. Co-op is fun, loot is shared and solo play is fun too.
Combat needs work, enemies do cooler moves than you, no skill trees and the overworld is fun to explore, but feels unfinished. Repetitive caves and rooms. I bought it because i thought there was magic but ill deal with a stick and a wizard hat for now, when i find the right color.
Worth the money as is, grab a buddy. Servers are still up, and you can feel it definitely was not abandoned, just put on hold till question marks. I hope they continue what they have here, BUT if not its still a good game. In the meantime thanks for keeping it online, its a nice relaxer after work and i'm top of the leaderboards in something lmaooooo
I've enjoyed myself alone for 6 hours. The game was fun, and the inventory management was tight, which I enjoy. I used duel daggers until I got an attack speed boosted shield followed by a golden super mace. Now I just use shield and fist cause I don't have any one handed trinkets to wield the mace. Tossed the bow for the same reason. Ill come back to duel if I get a golden claws, but I think shield and mace call me for now. Either way, what I'm trying to say is the game is fun and I'm excited to try the pvp when there are more (or any) players. I felt like the currency is generous , but not too easy to come across. The bosses are fun and interesting. Once again, the only thing missing are people. The Guild dungeon is an awesome idea, and I cant wait to try it with a larger party than just myself. Hats off, great work. You have my attention, and I'm stoked to see where this goes.

I played for a short while and paid about 2.50 for the game. The game has promise. It is quite janky. The controls need to be re-binded on starting. I only tried single player mode. Found it a little easy but did not get very far.
Graphics were nice to look at. I liked the combat, sometimes enemies clip through walls, but I can live with that. I liked finding secret passages. I could not figure out how to heal or get rid of poison, I looked through the inventory but did not see any of the scrolls I picked up. I am sure this is all in the game somewhere. I looks like a lot of work went into this game. I do not mind a few bugs in a game but I know some people do. Keep in mind what you are buying.
I saw in the forums that the developers may still work on this (I would encourage it). However, I have my doubts that any more updates will ever be seen. Buy at your own risk. I have paid a lot more for a game and got a lot less. It is functional and there is fun to be had. Some creative enemies to start out fighting and I hope to find more as I progress.

Seeing that this is somehow, [i]bafflingly[/i] still sitting at mixed even 4 years later, I'm updating my review to provide some more context.
The Yellow King is not a complete game. It's mostly a tech demo with controls made by someone who has clearly never played a PC game, or at least not one since the standardization of WASD movement and mouse aim, which means the last game they played predates the original release of DOOM, which had support for mouse look even on DOS. The controls are so bad as to prevent people from playing the game, even when it was being developed.
You may have noticed the past tense I used there. Sometime after launch (this game was $30, by the way) it went on a rather large sale to promote a new update. This was in June of 2020, so roughly 4 months after launch. The sale was something like 30-50% off and came with a slew of minor updates and some dungeons.
This was the last update the game would see. Since then, the game has been radio silent, aside from a price drop at some point to $10. The controls are still awful, the game doesn't really work, and no one plays it because it's bad. The devs, Spellbook, have continued making other games in the meantime, while ignoring this one completely and not interacting with the community. The context of the last patch being paired with a sale stinks of a "take the money and run" mentality, of Spellbook doing their damnedest to make as much money off this steaming pile as possible; leaving it up, and even reducing the price continues this narrative, as they hope people buy it by accident and never refund it.
I would advise against ever supporting this developer/publisher again. The list of games to avoid which they have had a hand in on steam can be found by clicking the dev link at the top of the page. Do not buy or play anything they have released.

I hate giving this game a bad review. I honestly love/loved it. When it first went early access I paid full price, didn't even wait for a sale. It had its issues but most early access games do. The devs were very social on their discord at the time as well. The last year I've been playing though there is never another soul on and the discord never has any updates,

It's a great game with friends, though understandably due to covid it will be a while before there are content updates

I bought the game because it was on sale, and figured I could jump into an active MMORPG - though I was truly wrong. The last update this game had was a year ago, so it would appear the devs have completely abandoned it (though it's still for sale on steam, which is kind of crappy). In the 3 days I've played so far, I've seen ONE person log on (and they were also brand new). What could be an interesting game is more lack-luster than anything else because of in-game systems that aren't complete (like weapon effects that mention future updates) and the constant recycling of dungeon maps and enemies.
The rune system (which is used for purchases of inventory slots) is ridiculously over-priced and frustrating, and most decent weapons you'll find you won't be able to use for quite some time because of steep requirements. It was 5 dollars, so I guess I won't be too disappointed - but I wouldn't recommend anyone else plunks down cash until something happens with development updates.

Feels really solid for an early access game. Combat is fun, enemies are interesting, and the dungeons are well designed.
I really love how the armor is cosmetic, so my character looks how I want them to, without worrying about stats.

Unfortunately this game appears dead. The developers don't seem to have been active for over six months. It could be because development has halted, but it can also be because 2020 I know.
The controls in this game are so bad I found it completely unplayable with mouse and keyboard. It took me less than half an hour to establish that the pain simply isn't worth it, no matter what. It plays like Dark Souls without mods.
These recent sales without any word of updates aren't very reassuring either and the Discord isn't exactly bustling.
In conclusion steer clear for now. Perhaps we'll see a big update at some point, but unfortunately I'm no longer hopeful.
The controls are the main problem. After a while of playing, you will start to get sick due to camera movements and the bad controls just feel wrong. I see a lot of review saying "The controls are not that bad if you go to settings, rebind everything, change this, change that.....".If you have to do all of that just to get decent controls you would find on any other 3rd person game, that's not a good sign. I would say instead of updating things like new dungeons they should at least make the controls more stable first. But then again it is still in early access so there is still a lot of room for improvement.
The short version of this is: don't.
The long version: do not.
Honestly, the input controls feel like trying to steer a dinosaur on rollerskates and the combat is incredibly clunky. It was genuinely unfulfilling to try to even measure where the hitboxes lie and the game feels like it should move at somewhere between two to three times as fast, since all the animations are sloppy and loose.
Only positive I can say is the artstyle is kind of cool.
Another negative though is that the game seems ENTIRELY ABANDONED and not a single soul replied when I posted in global chat to ask if anyone even played this game (I wanted to ask how to fix the camera so half my screen wasn't staring at the floor behind my character, which was the LEAST AWFUL of the camera options). I won't even bother going into detail about how badly the mouse integration and interfaces are, but I will say that the leaderboard button sends you to a 404 error on their website, so...

Just look a the discussions for the numerous reasons. Mainly, this game was abandoned with many features and QOL updates missing. The controls are pathetic, and its a chore to play.
The core idea here is superb and the presentation is fun, but the controls are just diabolical. Gamepad support isn't there (the game works okay with a gamepad, but occasionally you'll hit a menu you can't close without hitting escape on your keyboard), so you're largely forced to use keyboard/mouse. But then you have to use keys to turn, and look. The mouse does nothing, except interact with menus (when you have them open). It's a nightmare. It's... actually incomprehensible. Even the gamepad mapping is weird, asking you to use left/right triggers to strafe. It's like the developers have never played a third person shooter before.
Once you get the mouse-look sorted, that's when you realise how broken the camera and controls really are. The smallest movement you can make is huge, meaning that you can't really aim in this game. You have to kind of strafe into the correct line that your character is facing. You also can't look up/down, so when you're on a stairway (there are lots of stairways), you'll shoot over the head of the mob standing right in front of you, hammering you with a sword...
It's so frustrating. I gave this nearly an hour and could see how much fun this game could be if the controls were sorted.
As it is, I'm refunding it, and I can't honestly recommend this to anyone. Hopefully future revisions will fix the glaring control/camera issues, then this game's potential can be realised. As it is, avoid.

Looking at the videos and reading the description I tough "This could be a great game - let's bend my number 1 rule, i.e., never buy early access". I don't know why, but playing the game is completely different experience from just watching the video. Not only combat but even movement feels wrong. Everything is neat and nice in the videos but not while playing. Also (but I can understand this, it is early access after all) it is very difficult to understand what you're supposed to do. I will surely play it again at 1.0 but right now for me it is a NO.

This game has potential but it is ruined by one huge flaw, the controls... Its almost like the devs have never played a 3rd person rpg before! I mean seriously what where they thinking with these controls?
Ive waited almost 6 months and there has been no change to the controls and no update since June, and at the time of writing this literally zero people are playing the game at the moment according to Steam charts so im sorry but its a no from me.

I want to chime in with the other reviewers and say that this game really has a ton of potential. The developers are very active (on discord) and I really love the aesthetic/direction they've taken with the art. However...
The controls are nauseating to use at the moment. You can't turn with your mouse unless you enable it in settings, but when you do your character turns with literally every twitch. It's extremely disorienting.
Another worrisome part is the weapon design. Ignoring the controls for a second, ranged weapons seem to do basically the same amount of damage as melee weapons, but carry none of the same risk. The hardest difficulty is managing to aim the ranged weapons, but if that's the idea of balance to the developers I am deeply concerned.
CURRENTLY a 2/10 game, with some work and love could end up easily being a 7/10 game if you like dungeon crawling hack/slash mixed with some Lovecraft.
Community seems nice, developers are active but the game price is simply too high for what they currently have. I would say wait until the price drops. Plenty of people are hopeful about this game and I wish it the best!
This game has such great potential. It just needs more players. The game is early on but the polish is there. Really awesome character creation system and really unique weapons. Great dungeon crawler very easy to team up with people.
At 75% off its a great deal. At 50% good deal. At 25% off its okay. Not sure buying at full price yet.
"Try using a gamepad for a better experience!" is an understatement. I hope devs will improve the controls because right now, It's the biggest hurdle preventing people from experiencing the game. Otherwise I like the simple action combat, lots of loot, and infinite dungeon system.

- There a several types of enemies such as range, melee, special, and boss.
- Enemy A.I. is varied. Enemies can teleport behind u, dodge roll ur atttacks, inflict status, create barriers, rush u, surround u, and explode.

- you collect runes which you use to expand your equipment or storage space
- runes can also be used to buy weapon/trinkets from shops

- I've only played on the solo/group infinite dungeons so far
- Each room can be a small, large, trap, teleporter, or boss room.

Unfourtunately the games camera control is really bad. I like the core idea of the game and the endless dungeons. However I feel like as others do, it needs a good camera control. Then I will gladly check the game back.
The game is fun plane and simple. The more you have the better is seems to be. Learning curve is there cause there really isnt a into besides a very very brief walk through as you go into a dungeon however once you pick things up its really gets good. Rune spending is key, doing quests and clearing boss on floors is what I seem to do to make more runes. Trinkets are where all your power come from but dont worry about them right away
the controls are pretty poorly implemented. For both pc annd computer. The reason todays games work and combet feels good is all around controls they combine thinngs like dodge and crouch by readin wehn theres another input like stick forward crouch is a roll, stick stationary and crouch = crouch. Etc your art design is nice, more monster would help, and a character customization.

2021 Update - game wasnt updated for almost year development team didnt spoke a word on their own discord and i feel like it will take much more time to do further development so dont buy this game is not finished

-weapon stats difference between bigger rarities is just few percentage of attack speed so sometimes you feel like its not worth your runes you spent grinding on dungeons
Worst Controls ever.
Its like the creators of this game have never played any other game, and decided to create controls completely from scratch. Awkward and clunky. Completely unintuitive. The controls make being drunk seem like you are a deft and agile ninja in comparison.
Keyboard and mouse is awful, gamepad is awful.
Cannot recommend until they improve the controls.
fun dungeon crawler
Ya se que es un acceso anticipado, pero es un juego muy repetitvo, al final solo hay unos 4 ó 5 tipos de salas. Además se echa en falta un inventario donde guardar las armas que caen (hay un inventario de trinkets) y luego poder venderlas para conseguir oro.
El baúl casi carece de sentido al no poder crearte otro personaje y la falta de inventario hace casi imposible guardar armas en él, aunque como ya digo, al tener solo un personaje no tiene sentido guardar armas de más bajo nivel que nunca vas a utilizar.
love this game. hope they finish it. but they do alot updates, they have my vote and my money i love this guys !

I've gotten quite a few friends on board to play this for the past 2 days. Getting a whole big group together to explore dungeons has been a lot of fun. The art style is fun and feels unique to other games I've played. Going out and exploring through the city there is a lot of signs of things to come that we are looking forward to.
I will admit that the game doesn't really explain a lot of how it works very well or at all but once you understand that all your skill points come from trinkets it makes a lot more sense and is easier to manage.
As others have said the controls are rough in their default set up. I've managed to get used to it after a half hour, some others have spent time redoing their key bindings but to each their own.
All in all, I'd say grab this on sale, give it a shot. Right now it feels rough around the edges but there looks like a lot of potential for this to grow.
The controls were awful.. I couldn't even continue past starting area. If they made where your camera looks where your mouse looks it would be fine.. like an action combat but you have to turn and strafe with your keyboard only.

Ok, first off, I get that this is early access. I will say that the ambiance in some of the rooms is pretty neat, and the time a mimic surprised me wasn't bad. That's about as far as my praise goes. The combat is clunky and slow, but somehow still completely unchallenging unless there are at least a dozen enemies running at you. The currency and inventory systems are designed as though it's a mobile game(2 currencies, one in abundance and one more rare. You start with one inventory slot and have to buy more with the more rare currency). I hoped to find some cool puzzles or something(I found one very boring puzzle), but it's just the most bland, uninspired dungeon crawl I've ever seen. It's supposed to be based on a character that Lovecraft wrote about, but who was inspired by The King in Yellow by Robert W Chalmers. The ad hyped up the inclusion of Lovecraftian mythos, but there was no lore to be found. A "boss" I fought was a few tentacles sticking out of a slime pit(you literally whack a crystal on a stand to drain the slime for a limited time, and then go whack the tentacles), and people associate Lovecraft with tentacle monsters, so I guess there's that. The game drops you into an actually kind of neat looking hub, but I couldn't find anything to interact with except for the doors that put you into the dungeon. It's billed as an MMO, but I saw no other players at any point. It seems like a bad knockoff of the mediocre Gauntlet remake from a few years ago. When you enter the first level, it just drops an objective list and off you go. It's impossible to play with mouse and keyboard if you have 2 monitors because the mouse isn't locked to the game window, (there's no option for it either); but the menus are impossible to navigate with a controller. The game is so easy, I can't imagine playing with a group, but so boring that I couldn't sit through an hour of it by myself. Sorry guys. Once again, I know it's Early Access, but this is one of the most rough EA games I've played.

I don't usually review games. Do not buy this game. It was not even close to being worth the $6 I paid at a 75% discount.
Here is the reason: The controls are SO horrible-- possibly the worst of any game I have ever played. Other reviewers have mentioned the tank controls and their awkwardness, but they are seriously horrible if you have played any other 3D game.
Maybe it will get better in the future; there seems to be potential and the devs seem pretty active, but why release content updates when one of the most basic parts of your game is so obviously bad? I can't imagine anybody playtesting this and saying "yeah, this is probably good enough for the general public."

Its a great little dungeon crawler. The price should lower than 25 bricks. The game is excellent with friends. Got the game while on a 75% discount very much worth it than.

I've been watching this game develop since before release, and was really interested. The visual style and action oriented combat is great, however the controls in this game are not great.
No turning with your mouse unless you toggle it on but if you open a menu, you have to toggle it off, and then do it all over again. Not to mention the janky turning animation snapping for a second because I moved my mouse less than a millimeter.
This wouldn't be a huge problem except the enemies move faster than you can turn, and your attack hit box is oddly small. and there is no crosshair with the bow and since you can't really aim with the mouse it makes it really awkward to use.
All in all, I hope they create a more fluid and dynamic control scheme and increase players movement capabilities.
From the amount of time I played, I can say that this game could be really fun if you can get over the controls.
Hasn't had a new update since June of 2020. Devs went radio silent. Game Over.
An excellent game, but there is a lack of players. Something needs to be done in terms of a marketing campaign. Otherwise, get some friends to play it with you. Also, the price is a tad steep. $10.00, not $24.99, would be a fair price. (With that being said my friends and I bought in at 75% off.)
Extremely basic gameplay and horribly awkward controls. Combat is clunky and very simplistic. Enemies just sprint towards you en masse so you spend all your time kiting groups in EVERY room.
