The White Laboratory is a sandbox style physics-based tower defense and RTS game in which you modularly build and command robotic structures. Use them to defend against or conquer other disobedient mechanical blocks on a facility floating in the atmosphere of a remote gas planet.

It is about time for our quadrennial operation check through various parts of the facility. In the series of missions, combine robotic modular geometry components into different structures to adapt to combat situations. Build ground defenses around, send propeller air probes, attract and transfer scrap resources, and anything else the physics allows. Clean up anything unwanted to complete the maintenance task.

This game is great for those who like (or might enjoy) tower defence games with extra steps.

Instead of just placing and upgrading towers like in other tower defence games; this game gives you some elementary parts like blocks and guns with which you can use to crteate the towers. Don't like how little damage a tower is doing? Add more guns. Is your tower unable to power all of the guns that you just added? Add more anchorpoints or generators.

Personally I enjoy this system of tower creation, especially when they introduce new mechanics (no spoilers). The tutorials are placed around the levels on signs which need to be interacted with and read. They do occasionally teach with demos as well.

The levels took a while, (because they were difficult at first; not because they were tedious), but I enjoyed the challenges.

i really, really, REALLY love this game, but in its current state it is quite literally unwinnable. there's a crash that happens in the second campaign of the game when you try to select a flying unit. what's able to be completed is very fun, but you'll see those locks in the sandbox forever.

I don't think its for everyone. I finished the entire game and I admit to many it can be a tedious game, gathering resources, repairing components, assembling, but I think the payoff is excellent when an offensive goes right, and you overcome the obstacles that have been put in place through creativity and a little bit of micromanagement (especially if you do reflector drones).

It isn't really a tower defense game. If you're looking for primarily tower defense this isn't really it. The later levels feature close to zero tower defense leaning more towards into offensive strategies with flying builds and sometimes cart strategies.

The game also is frankly not very easy. This is definitely a game that would be practically impossible without frequent saves. Each failed offensive improves your strategy though, and learning everything on your own without any handholding is a unique and rewarding experience.

The White Laboratory is a cute and unique little physics based towerdefense game with RTS elements. Or atleast, that's probably what you are gonna think if you saw this on Youtube and decided to check it out yourself. You would be forgiven for thinking this way, as the early missions only have a small amount of RTS gameplay. In practice however you will find that after you clear the tutorial the game quickly abandons most of its towerdefense identity in favor of becoming an RTS focused game.

Ultimately this game is kind of like an RTS game that's wearing a high quality towerdefense fursuit. While the towerdefense gameplay is still cool, the game does not focus on it and many aspects of its design are sadly unexplored. In terms of percentage it would probably be somewhere between 75 to 80% RTS.

There are 3 main flaws this game has that you should know coming into this. Firstly, the game is actually quite short. The campaign of the game consists of only 4 levels, 1 of which is the tutorial mission. You can expect these levels to take somewhere around 2 hours each with the exception of the tutorial which is only 1 hour. This is part of the reason why the towerdefense aspects are so underexplored. Along with the campaign there is also a sandbox mode, that has 4 challenges for you to complete, although in practice its more like just 2 challenges since you only need 1 design to easily stomp the first 3.

The second flaw is the awkward physics system. There are plenty of other reviewers will go more in depth on this but the main issue is that the structures are TOO flexible. Building something requires you to put pieces on the connection points of other pieces, but for some reason they will ONLY connect to whatever side you stick them on, even if it is possible for them to have had multiple connections at the same time. There is an option to connect them further, but all connections made this way are weaker compared to natural connections, as well as the process being quite tedious. The wonky physics heavily discourages you from making larger buildings or units, and you will find yourself feeling pigeonholed into relying largely on basic 2-3 high straight towers as anything much bigger will buckle under its own weight or the recoil of the bullet shooter. The RTS units fare a little better, but this is partly because there usually aren't enough blocks to build large units in the first place.

The third and final flaw is the META of the game. This sounds a little bit silly since it is just a short singleplayer experience, but since the gameplay should lend itself to creativity atleast in theory I feel like it needs to be mentioned. The gameplay quickly boils down to building the same airship every leve. The laserbeam block is SIGNIFICANTLY better compared to the bullet shooter which leaves little reason to use anything else if at all possible. The defenses that you have to attack are quite strong, and your blocks are usually pretty limited so you are pushed into using only the best pieces for your airships because you don't want to build a weak airship that gets easily shot down. It is still possible to use different designs or strategies, (mostly ramming) but these are largely few and far between which isn't good considering the length of the game.

Lastly it should be mentioned that actually putting together your towers and units can be fairly annoying and time consuming. While there are blueprints you can only use them in certain areas of the map so expect to build everything by hand every time. This kind of ties into flaws 2 and 3 already mentioned.

While the game does have some pretty under the surface but very real issues, it still has some things it does very well too. For starters the core idea of the game is just great. A tower defense where killing enemies gives you the blocks to make your own towers sounds awesome! The RTS side of things sounds just as cool with being able to build your own units to then go and assault the enemies position. Both of these are indeed quite fun even if they are a little underexplored in the actual game.

Secondly the aesthetics of the game are just amazing. The game has a very unique style to it and I would say it pulls it off pretty well. Every level is completely unique and has you slowly fighting across what are basically big industrialized space stations. The music is also pretty good too and definitely fits the game quite nicely. The game is also surprisingly in depth in some areas. For example you can get full diagnostics for whatever tower or unit you construct, which is cool but frankly quite useless.

Overall this is a neat but short game that definitely isn't for everyone. If you were gonna get it because of the towerdefense elements then you probably should look elsewhere. It is probably a 6.5/10 mostly because of the short length of the game. You probably want to wait for a sale to happen to pick this one up.

I remember playing the demo for this game a long time ago, I had no idea it actually came out until much later in life. As a fan, and developer of other various physics based AND TD things I love this game. Both way back then and now! I can tell many aspects are a labor of love, nuanced controls, AI behaviours, line-of-sights, and I really like the offensive nature of the game, more than just a defense, with many regions to travel between carrying your blocks along with you.
Comparatively I do enjoy the wacky physics this game exhibits as it adds to the charm of chaos that the enemies also have. meaning its not just a game about stats as some times the fight might not go you way.
If I HAD to nitpick somewhere, the 'one-joint' nature of some of the builds does end up limiting my creative design, or perhaps I am missing something (I'll update this if I figure that one out)

Simple design, using mainly simple shapes for you and the environment.
Physics based design bring strategy in a bad way, as the physics could be.. better.
Block connections are weak and too flexible, cannot be connected well ( game tells you to form an archway, but it would tilt down in the middle due to loose connections. Its also expensive on blocks, has not great accuracy.

Spinning your spheres ( your first damaging block ) for faster firerate creates accuracy issues, ruining alot of the gameplay, as some enemies are extremely fast and can dodge all your bullets, even your spheres on the ground have trouble hitting them.

The game doesnt seem to be having updates anymore, aswell as that you just.. cant tab out of the game??
setting it to windowed doesnt work either??? so if someone messages you or something you have to save and exit OUT of the game just to see it??

Id rate it somewhere along the lines of 4/10.

which looks like Aperture. Assembling works bit like Besiege but carefull since blocks are limited most of the time and first lvl is quite difficult. You can 100% the game within 20h so it's bit short but considering low price it's worth it.

This is a game of it's own genre.
It combines RTS and Tower Defense with good mechanics applied to both.
Buy it if:
- You have a lot of free time
- You like the genres above
-You like a hard tower defense game (BTD6 Players buy now)
Don't buy if:
- You don't have time (Each campaign mission lasts about 0.5-3 hrs, play about 15 minutes per session best)

Currently, with the state of the game I wouldn't recommend it. I enjoy playing it, but there are so many things that need to be fixed before it is worth it.

Major bugs I encountered:
When making units the game will occasionally white screen, and the only way I can fix it occasionally is to button mash both left and right click until the game deselects the unit and goes back to normal. However, this does not always work. Sometimes, the game fully white screens where I can't alt+tab or task manager it shut, forcing me to force shut down my PC just so I can do anything. To make matters worse, this happens 90% of the time I select a unit.

And that was the only bug, which ruins gameplay and is major. There are also things like large structures do not hold together well, no point in making custom turrets because the basic turret designs mentioned in game are all you need and do pretty much anything, and that physics isn't really used (Only detects speed of some turrets, and does bullet drop, but that is it) despite being a physics-based tower defense game. If you want to try it get it on sale, but it is not worth the full price at all. It isn't even worth the price on sale because of the white screen bug I mentioned (Though I don't know if anyone else has had this bug, and I can not find any information on it online either).

This game is very fun, for me at least. The bugs that I've encountered are rare and don't impact my gameplay much and while others have said the game isn't good because of janky physics I quite like that as it makes me think about how to combat those physics and to work around it. My one and sole issue with this game though:

Lack of content.

There's only 4 campaign levels and 2 survival levels along with 0 map building or modding capabilities. The blocks themselves are fine, there's 10 you can use and each are unique and have a variety of uses, but the levels themselves don't let you use half of them most of the time.

I'd like it for there to be more levels added, and maybe add a steam workshop as well?
Because once you complete all of the levels in the game you really only have the optional sandbox challenges and after that there's nothing new to do. True, that's the case with other games, but for this one you burn up the available level pool quickly and end up bored and leaving the game for something else.

Overall though, good game. Not sure if it's worth the 10$, and even then I'm not sure why I'm writing a review on a 4 year old game but nonetheless I pray that one day this game gets the well deserved update it needs.

Claims to be a physics-based tower defense, but this is only technically true. In practice, the physics simulation provides nothing to the gameplay, with the exception of a few block types that explicitly change behavior when they reach X speed, in order to justify why you would make anything that rapidly spins.

Making large structures is effectively impossible due to the unforgiving rubber-band attachments that turn anything larger than 3 cubes into a jellified mess, which often tears itself apart if you try to transport it between zones.

Making units is technically possible, but the controls for giving commands to these units requires a minimum of three interactions for every individual unit, which makes them a chore to bother with.

Moment-to-moment gameplay is incredibly tedious, either because you're constantly rebuilding towers by hand as they take chip damage, or because you're waiting for the main platform to regenerate enough energy to advance or change locations. I spent at least half of my time with this game incredibly bored.

While it is technically possible to design your own towers or units, I saw no incentive to do so beyond the small number of tutorial-spoon-fed designs which are explicitly made to trigger some alternate behavior of the block types. Even if I had a design I was proud of, the sheer inconvenience of keeping them repaired discouraged these more complicated designs.

This game is unable to use its main gimmick in a fun way. Just play besieged instead.

El juego está bastante bien. Te da mucha libertad en como solventar cada nivel. Pero sinceramente creo que le faltan al menos dos o tres tipos de bloques más para mejorar la experiencia. Así como mas niveles, aunque por otra parte considero que por el precio esta bien lo que ofrece.
En los últimos niveles y en el sandbox se suele crashear bastante.

Quite possibly the worst game Ive ever played. Not to say i havent played worse "games", but this is the worst ive played that had actual effort put into it. The concepts are amazing, the design is cool, even some of the music is great. The gameplay however is ****ing awful. At some points id compare it to banging my head against a wall repeatedly for hours and that would still be less painful than this sorry excuse for a game.
Half the time id try and click on blocks and it wouldnt work and when they did they often misplaced or didnt place at all, forcing me to repeat the process all over again. Not to mention the atrocious level design of some of the levels. At the beginning the levels were easy and somewhat quick to complete, but the later levels are what infuriated me. Id try a dozen different tactics to make it past a level and eventually one would work. The physics are also jank as all hell. Youd think a block style game with rigid pieces would have rigid structure as well, not in the slightest.
Overall i give it a 3/10. Buy something better.

Jednocześnie nie ma w niej realnej aktywnej pauzy.
Nie ma możliwości precyzyjnego ustawienia jednostek, kiedy pozostawanie poza zasięgiem przeciwnika jest kluczowe. Sterując latającymi statkami można wybrać punkt docelowy, ale nie dokładną trasę. W związku z tym o okrążeniu obrony przeciwnika można zapomnieć. Sterowanie pociągiem - to samo. Można włączyć/wyłączyć obracanie się kół, więc zatrzymywanie pociągu w konkretnym punkcie trzeba "wyczuć", bo działa tu bezwładność.

Gra jest trochę nieintuicyjna. Wybieramy jednostkę prawym przyciskiem myszy, wydajemy rozkazy prawym, cofamy zaznaczenie lewym. Nie zdziwcie się, jak każecie własnej jednostce ostrzelać drugą przyjazną wieżę.

Honestly I don't recommend to buy if you have clumsy fingers.
the menus are weird and i cant seem to get used to them
yeah sure the freedom is amazing but the gravity mechanics and collision make it obsolete when it comes to flying machines, the power function on anything that flies is wack, hours of progress wasted because it doesn't give me "consistent" auto saves, and I believe that's it.

This game provides an excellent take on the tower defense genre as a whole in a truly unique way. The concepts of building your own tower designs, vehicles, etc being used to a great degree in gameplay. This game truly was and still is a one-of-a-kind tower defense exprience.

However, the game has a very large problem, content.
While the gameplay itself is incredibly fun and encourages creativity in design and strategy throughout, the actual content of the game, being it's 4 main campaign stages and 2 survival stages do not provide enough content for the player to truly experience all the possibilities through one playthrough. There are even a few tiers of block and block types which go entirely unused throughout the campaign as a whole.
While the sandbox mode does exist, the way it is designed prevents the same kind of experimentation present in the main game.
To top this all off, the lack of any user-generated content, or a way for users to make content of their own blocks the incredible amounts of creativity present in both the design and gameplay, resulting in a game which can be beaten quite quickly in an average playthrough, and leaves a desire to see the mechanics it introduced used to their fullest.

So with all of these negatives, why am I still recommending this game?
While the game itself may be quite short and leave an aching wish for more content, the gameplay itself is truly something worth the small time investment this game is.
If this game had user-generated content, or even a local level editor, as well as a few less bugs which pop up commonly, it could truly shine as one of the most creative tower defense games on the steam marketplace.

当初跟着散老师买的，看着挺有意思的，但是吧，自己上手怎么感觉怪怪的，没有了那种大脑激情碰撞的感受。就额热情突然一下子没了，啪，快乐没了。唔，就很难受。同类型的后来我也找到了几个，但显然，这款游戏就是落了下风，不成功。

优点:清新,脱俗,简洁明了.与其他小厂制作的游戏相比较为新异.
Advantages: fresh, vulgar, concise. Compared with other small factory - made games are relatively new.
缺点:定价过高,心里价位6-12( RMB ),刚开始还好,一旦失去新鲜感就会觉得无聊,不建议购买.
还有,听说制作组跑路了
Cons: Overpriced, the heart price 6-12 ( RMB )（ = 0.9 - 1.4 dollar ）, at first it was okay, once lost freshness will feel bored, not recommended to buy.
Also, I heard that the production team members dont care about this game any more.

This game is an amazing take of tower defense. I love the mechanics of building your towers instead of relying on a money based system. I also love the tug of war aspects, having the levels be larger than one zone and being able to move towers across them. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who love tower defense or strategy games.
