This is an extremely underrated 4x title. I think many players went into this expecting a traditional 4x with a fairly even balance across all the x's but IMO this game is firmly in the camp of War Games. All the crunchy bits are saved for ship design and strategic decision making around use of spys, fleets/armies, and space lanes during war time. The research system is excellent and, after playing quite a bit of Terra Invicta, I suspect provided the inspiration for that game as well. It's split into basic and applied with a slider to set the priority in one direction or another. You also need to discover certain tech before it will be available which I like. Makes it feel like I'm exploring the universe and learning from ancient fallen civilizations...or maybe just my enemy.
Graphics aren't amazing but they're clean and certainly do the job better than 90% of war games. Swarms of fighters duck into range to blow something up before retreating to the main battle line, large ships need to turn to aim their big guns which can be taken advantage of, and it all plays out in real time so you can issue tactical commands. Feels very satisfying once you start using balanced fleet designs.
I think I could easily sink 100+ hours into this once TI releases it's hold on my brain. It's on sale fairly often so if you enjoy the strategic combat layer of other 4x games I highly recommend giving it a shot. You'll at least get your money's worth of entertainment in return.
This game has some of the most intense "Just one more turn" hypnotism I've ever encountered.
That being said it has major issues
Whoever allowed a full decade to pass without the ability to select multiple fleets and merge them, or even tell them to go to the same system, will not see the pearly gates.
More pressingly, combat is tedious. Units are clunky, both in movement and in size, even my longest ranged weapons can't actually reach beyond - max - a two ship deep line. Which makes trying to bring superior numbers to bare an excercise in frustration, and superior numbers are kind of the only deciding factor of a fight. Maybe I'm dogwater at ship design, but no designs I made mattered compared to simply having more mass in the fight compared to the enemy.
This is exascerbated by auto resolve trying to forcefully paint the back of your throat white at every possible opportunity. It will tell you that you have an overwhleming advantage, you press auto resolve, your entire fleet disappears, and they don't lose a single fighter. You play the fight, press "do what you want" and proceed to not lose a single ship. You press auto resolve, win, but it randomly decides that all your utility ships just completely explode. Want to bring an interdictor ship? Get used to playing worhtless fights! Want to not have to press a button to refuel, and just put your supply ships in your fleet? They have declared their belief in the protections of YWWH, and has charged forth ahead of the entire fleet (Despite being godlessly slow) to try to save the soul of the heretic saracens. At least that's auto resolves interpretation of events. Also fleets that have no weapons can fight, pressing auto resolve will result in your fleet, no matter the numbers, completely exploding. So enjoy loading in to press retreat on your twenty stack of troop transports that ran into a single scout accidentally.
The infrastructure behind everything is... really basic? You have three real planet classes, Earth-like, which makes your food, your fleets, your research, your rare materials, your baby blanket, your wife, your happiness, and your liberty. Aquatic, which contributes sometimes to research, and everything else, which exist to make materials and hold territory.
The discrepancy in utiltiy is strange, but not enjoyment breaking. The real oddity, is that all buildings are abstracted to a certain type. like there's just factories, There's just farms. There's just research centres. You're never building a wiblywobbly TARDIS factory that increases planetary output by 9 kilobillion percent, you're just making more factories. This makes the colony management pretty effective, as long as you make a few factories for it so it can actually build things in an appreciable time, but it also means like, there's not really an economy to manage.
That combined with diplomacy being... not really worth talking about, Puts this game in a strange state, where there is clearly indepth systems, I didn't talk about the way research happened but it's honestly a really interesting take on it, and while I talked about ship design, it unquestionably has a very complex system behind it. But like, they're both on top of such simplistic bases that their complexity is completely washed out.
I should stop writing this review before I convince myself to unrec it.

Wish I woulda refunded but this a game from my backlog. Oh well thats always been gaming in a nutshell random chance on finding a good game.
See I can't even give this a chance because it's a Broken game under windows 11 +NVIDIA, can't full screen without LOSSLESS SCALING, as borderless crashes the game as does fullscreen and normal window mode is clipping the task bar and you can't move the windows taskbar away, tried switching to opengl but that crashes the game too.
Also once in game Camera Issues with the mouse, all sorts of bad feelings with it when rotating the view or moving the viewpoint making the game a nightmare to play, it's just not playable in this state.
It probably worked on older hardware or IGP's, but I'm not willing to try another machine I spent an hour trying to get it to work right and nothing helped.

I'd give Polaris Sector a 70/100. It's essentially budget Stellaris for people with lower-end PCs.
The strategic aspect is decently done, but the tactical combat, while functionable, has a great amount of flaws some of which will leave one scratching their head in disbelief.
You want a formation for big ships? Nope! Manually deploy them every single battle.
You order a group of ships to keep a formation? Nope! They break it almost immediately for no apparent reason.
Give those grouped fighters a formation? That breaks the group so you then must group them again.
Want to click on a unit? Oh sorry, your click wasn't pixel perfect so it doesn't register. You must click directly on the model, not the box around it.
Single clicking a ship that's in a group will always select the whole group. Dragging a box around the unit is the only way to select an individual unit within a group. Let me repeat that, the tool for grabbing one unit grabs a whole bunch of units, but the tool designed for group select is used for selecting individual units. How does a developer get this so backwards?
I enjoy the game as a whole, but the tactical combat leaves much to be desired.
EDIT After further review, I have decided to switch the review to negative. The tactical space combat is just so inept as to be beyond words to describe it.

Первая и самая любимая 4x стратегия в моей жизни (со старым названием Remember Tommorow). Нынешний ремейк добавил перчинки и возродил к жизни игру уже под текущим названием. На мой фанатский взгляд, в целом можно с уверенностью сказать, что все внесённые изменения пошли игре на пользу при этом не возимев отрицательного эфекта (за исключением отсутствия возможности ставить антигравитационные двигатели на космические станции и спутники). Отдельного внимания достойны AI противников и новые возможности в политике и шпионаже, которые попросту отсутствуют в любых других играх того же жанра. Конечно в нынешнее время, когда в большей степени ценится графика и спец. эфекты а не геймплей данный проект не пользуется особой популярностью, однако на мой взгляд в играх важнейшую роль имеет ГЕЙМПЛЕЙ. И геймплей этой игры привосходит в качестве все остальные, так как даёт огромное количество возможностей до сих пор недоступных в других проектах. Для тех, кто не знаком с проектом с 1998 года будет сложно оценить всю великолепность этой игры, однако в своё время эта игра произвела настоящую революцию и плотно засела в серца игроков. Возможно, чтобы оценить всё её величие необходимо ознакомиться с более старыми играми. В общем Polaris Sector это ЛЕГЕНДАРНАЯ ХАРДКОРНАЯ ИГРА с революционным гейплеем для своего времени (имеется ввиду 1998 год). Огромное спасибо разработчикам!

Мод к игре Polaris sector в обновлённой версии v2.0 Arena с чётким игровым балансом, новыми тактическими и стратегическими решениями впечатляет. Интересно то, что добываемые ресурсы также плотно взаимосвязаны с производством кораблей и их оснащением. Теперь появляется понимание , что для войны с какой-либо расой требуются три фактора (об этом в 19 веке писал Наполеон-I): ресурсы, ресурсы и ещё раз ресурсы. Оснащение кораблей силовыми щитами теперь является важным фактором при проектировании корабля. Градация между оружейными фортами правильная. Теперь невыгодно ставить на тяжёлый оружейный форт вид оружия с лёгкого оружейного форта. Боевые спутники и боевые платформы в стратегическом плане нужны - это действительно космические крепости. В игре следует грамотно развивать инфраструктуру планеты- иначе здравствуй кризис. Корветы с двумя или четырьмя палубами (у каждой расы по разному) это сильные боевые корабли. В мод добавлены Штурмовые Терминаторы. Устранён баг с бутафорскими торпедами и ракетами. С первого раза вряд ли кому удастся пройти АРЕНУ, со второго или четвёртого раза может получиться победить на арене.
(Для справки: реальный игровой мой опыт в этой игре более 5000 часов.)

Polaris sector is a very sophisticated real-time strategy game, that encourages careful ship design choices according to the situation, instead of simply choosing the most advanced components available .
The only negative I have to mention about it, is the music. Although it isn't bad, I find it somewhat not so fitting to a space game.

I love this game, its an smaller company so not as polished but the features and options are great and I spent hours playing this genre and I have since the first games came out.
TLDR: AI cheats at all difficulties, wait for Sale
Game AI Confuses difficulty with contrived conflict. Enemies seem to be able to move their ships significant distances without a refueling system (somehow). Enemies will intentionally send colonies as close to or within your borders and then start a war over it.
It COULD be fun, but who ever designed the enemy combat system did not hit the mark of good fun combat; instead its more :
"play by the rules while the AI hardcore cheats because i wasn't smart enough to design a functional Strategic enemy combat system and instead overly simplified aggressive behaviors"
Locks a pivotal option as "Build fleet" behind a DLC.
I agree that underrated is the best word that comes to mind. It has some kick, although it's aged. Ship design and tech are I dare to say the best out of all the space 4x I've ever played - vast and meaningful in battle. Tech is balanced and 'dozed'. Economy is very nice. Ground combat is like in most newer games (almost nonexistent). If only the dev took it further or make Polaris Sector 2, that would be great. One playthrough was fun. Bought it on discount so I don't rant. Of course it's not as feature packed as the competition who engaged an army of devs but worth playing at least once.
A good game if you can get it on sale but downside is really should be mod/workshop compatible.

I have just started but this is if MoO 2 and Space Empires V had a baby. Not for everyone, but if you enjoyed those games ... yeah get this. If you enjoy a chill but makes you think type of game ... yeah get this. If Stellaris wasn't too "busy" for you .... no, don't get this. It is exactly the best of MoO 2 and the best of Space Empires V but updated.
Could've been successor to Space Empires V... but is abandoned game with playability killed by micromanagement (unless you decide to play small map) so in effect: a time waster.
Simple, but good. Not dlc hell like stellaris. You can have many fun hour from it. Perfect? Not, but nothing is that.

Distant Worlds 1/2 does not work on Steam Deck. Stardrive 1/2 does not work on Steam Deck. Sword of the Stars 1 does not work on Steam Deck. If you want an RTS/4x that isn't Sins of a Solar Empire... this is pretty much your only option... and it runs great. The game is a bit buggy, but so is every space 4x.

There may be a decent game under here but I wouldn't know, because when I launch the game it tries to spread it over all of my screens, and opening the bloody settings screen crashes 90% of the time, and the 10% it does open the settings screen, the game doesn't recognise your resolution settings for a widescreen monitor.

Good game, It crashes sometimes, but, Then it could be the computer! Designing your own spaceships is more fun as the game progresses.
The fundamental problem with the game is that it wastes a lot of the player's time.
Example: a default game will have 360 stars, and for each star you need to manually send a scout to the star, respond to the notification that the scout arrived at the star, then look at the star to see what you found. There's not much to it in terms of actual discovery; for most purposes a star will have one of ~8 usable planet types & can be dealt with in a standard fashion. There's no auto explore option either, just 360 different nodes with their standard contents that you each need to manually deal with each game.
This sort of design philosophy carries over to every other aspect of the game, where the designers like to have the player click hundreds/thousands of times rather than make more more direct and interesting decisions. Once you stabilize an early economy and figure out how to grow enough food for your pops, the rest of the game is just millions of more clicks as you advance waves of fighters into boring node after boring node. I've never made it past the mid game just because the prospect of continuing to play is so dauntingly boring.

This game was on sale for only a few bucks, so I thought I would try it out. I was immediately astonished by the exceptionally poor user interface and especially the font, which is very difficult to read and strains the eyes, even on a 70 inch monitor with a decent graphics card. I couldn't find any way in the settings to modify this. Some of the text was also off the edge of the screen. When setting up the galaxy, the mouseover explanation of certain concepts was lacking and not helpful. Tunnels per star? OK? What is that? No help. Why even have a mouseover menu? When setting up the race I was to play, all the options were locked, and I was unable to change anything. The graphical interface was so poor and ugly that I wasn't curious enough to exercise any effort to learn any more.
Honestly, I am thinking of returning the game to Steam for a refund, even of the low cost I paid. I haven't been so disappointed by the first impression of a game in a long time.

Questo è un giocone, bello, ma riservato agli appassionati di giochi strategici di esplorazione e conquista spaziale. Vi dico che nel genere - nonostante il titolo sia famoso - è uno di quelli che ho apprezzato meno. Su molte cose mi sembra limitato; su altre mi sembra di trovare cose già viste. Capisco che non si può sempre essere originalissimi. Detto questo è evidentemente un titolo che gli appassionati 4X non possono mancare

I spent several hours playing Polaris Sector and - though loving it, getting very frustrated with the amount of micro managing I was having to do. I was trying to control all my colony ships and build my fleets and it was ridiculously insane.
And then I had an epiphany. I was trying to play Polaris Sector the same way I play Master of Orion. It looks the same, superficially it feels the same.
They are not the same.
I had been ignoring things like "Fleet Designer" and "Plan Colonisation", because they felt superficial and I couldn't see how they did anything. I was looking for other ways to automate that weren't there. The instant I discovered that the Fleet Designer and Plan Colonisation Pages were the automation controls then the game suddenly opened up and everything became manageable.
It's excellent and very enjoyable.

The game may look good at first, but just after a bit of time playing, there will be a race called theoshians elliminating all stars randomly. Only very occasionally can you defeat it after a ♥♥♥♥ load of time development already, and you are more likely to get wiped out afterall. If you do't like such an experience of being chased by an undefeatable enemy, don't buy it!
While it looks decent at first -- has some very annoying bugs and mechanics...
Like AI stuck on it's turn while attacking your battle stations and you can't do nothing but autoresolve which is certain defeat.
Or enemy fleet appearing out of nowhere in the middle of your territory near the least defended planets...
Or planet invasion while all you battle-stations and defending fleet is on orbit...
Or annoying spying mechanics... and constant alerts due to trespassing.
Or necessity to control replenishment of small ships (fighters and bombers)... And you may loose HUNDREDS of them just in one battle.
and so on and so fourth.
I really like such games. MoO2 is still one of my favorites. But if only this game has more polish.... :(
Восхищаюсь талантами разработчиков , как у них получилось создать столь крышесносный симулятор галактической империи с простым и понятным управлением. А про тактическую составляющую космических битв вообще нельзя ничего плохого сказать. Не разу не пожалел,что купил)
К сожалению, игра не допилена и заброшена. Вот Stellaris вышел в том же 16 году и все еще живет и получает обновления.

This game is amazing in that it near completely solves the micromanagement problem that people have been trying to solve for decades. Decades.
It's easy to learn since it borrows a lot from past 4X strategy games.
It's also not buggy.
[Cons]
The downside is that this game just isn't fun. It's relaxing and boring. Why? It has no personality because it has no discernible backstory.
* I think the biggest thing that's missing is that there's no random events.
* There are random resources, but there's no story to them.
* There are no "heroes".
* I might have missed it even though I traveled through 90% of the map, but there's no "Boss" like in Master of Orion II, Stellaris, or Endless Space.
There's no fleet management where I can find a list of ships that can help me find them on the screen. You can make fleets but that's different from a screen that shows you all your ships and where they're at.
You can't cancel any agreements you've made in diplomacy. It seems to be permanent at least looking at the diplomacy options.
[Conclusion]
These guys solved some of the hardest problems in 4X games. Hopefully, they keep going and add the more fun and easier to implement stuff that gives this game more personality. There is an amazing game waiting to come out.
I am really enjoying this game. It has many features that you discover as you get deeper in, and has that just one more turn feel to it. Well worth it.
Después de muchas horas de juego: Es un juego recomendable, interesante, si bien por otro lado decepcionante. Ganar no es difícil, pero requiere bastante tiempo, incluso con el menor número de estrellas. Lo que más me ha gustado es el diseñador de naves, que ofrece millones de posibilidades y está muy bien concebido, Podría mejorar, por ejemplo permitiendo diseñar la forma del casco de las naves, pero está muy bien de todos modos. Gracias a este diseñador, los combates tácticos son muy interesantes, te permiten probar diferentes diseños de naves y combinaciones de naves, así como diferentes estrategias. La parte decepcionante es que los enemigos siempre usan las mismas estrategias (con pequeños cambios dependiendo de la raza que sea), así que es fácil diseñar un pequeño grupo de naves que sea capaz de derrotarlos a todos y atarlos a las tinieblas, usando determinada estrategia. Si tuviera la posibilidad (que no lo sé, igual la tiene) de jugar en modo multijugador, sería más interesante, dado que un jugador humano seguramente podría contrarrestar cada estrategia que a uno se le ocurriera.
El juego está diseñado para evitar la microgestión y poder, si uno quiere, automatizarlo todo, pero, en realidad, la microgestión es mucho más eficiente que la gestión automatizada que propone el juego. Yo siempre he preferido microgestionar mis planetas, con un resultado mucho mejor, pero con la desventaja de que el juego se vuelve mucho más pesado y lento.
Hay fallos en el programa que hacen que algunas veces no puedas grabar una plantilla de construcciones. También hay fallos que hacen que, con muchos planetas en microgestión, el juego olvide algunos y no te avise del cumplimiento de sus avances. Estaría bien poder repetir varias veces una plantilla igual que se puede repetir una construcción, indicando el número de veces que quieres construirlas.
Al pasar soldados de un planeta a las naves, o viceversa, sería deseable poder controlar con mayor facilidad el numero que quieres pasar. El número debería responder al giro de las ruedas del ratón o incluso deberías poder introducir directamente un número.
Las investigaciones están bien, hay un montón de tecnologías que descubrir, aunque la verdad es que muchas suponen sólo avances minúsculos, y, además, normalmente se llega al 100% de investigación mucho antes de que se acabe el juego, lo que es una pena. Me hubiera gustado que hubiera muchísimas más tecnologías que investigar y mucho más variadas e imaginativas (¡¡con lo fácil y divertido que hubiera sido implementar algo así!).
Las "sorpresas" que te encuentras a veces por el espacio son también muy limitadas y muy poco imaginativas: montoncitos de minerales, y las llaves warp y prioni o como se llamen, que a la postre significa que con un poco de suerte puedes conseguir, reuniendo unas cuantas, un par de naves especialmente potentes. Debería haber habido un montón más de sorpresas diferentes, más variadas, por ejemplo algunas que permitieran investigar nuevas ramas de la ciencia desconocidas para aquellos que no tropiecen con ellas. También, deberías ser capaz de analizar las naves que capturas o con las que te enfrentas, así como las naves que construyes con estos restos espaciales, y acceder así a nuevas tecnologías o nuevos tipos de naves.
Resumiendo, porque me canso de escribir tanto: un buen juego, pero se queda muy corto. Ojalá alguien con más imaginación sea capaz de desarrollarlo hasta sus últimas posibilidades.
Excellent jeu de conquête et de domination dans l'espace. La personnalisation des vaisseaux est bien faite, la gestion des flottes, les combats dans l'espace de grosses masses de vaisseaux sont bien réalisées. C'est une espèce de Master of Orion II ce qui est plutôt un compliment. Ce n'est pas un jeu graphique 3D mais un jeu de gestion de flottes. Le plus difficile est de comprendre le fonctionnement de l'arbre technologique. Pour moi qui ai joué à beaucoup de 4X spaciaux c'est vers celui-ci que je reviens souvent.

Neue Planeten kolonisieren? Ja, wenn das Kolonisationsschiff mal soweit fliegen könnte(kleine Tanks).
Kolonisten können nur von Planeten aufgenommen werden, die über ausreichend "freie" Bevölkerung verfügen.. und bis die sich vermehrt haben ist die Galaxie erloschen..
Also beschränkt man sich auf die Erforschung der näheren Systeme um wenigstens ein paar Bonusforschungspunkte zu erlangen.
Doch entweder gibt es nur (vorerst!) unbewohnbare Systeme oder die lieben Piratenfreunde haben sich breitgemacht. -.-
Wirklich gut ist(im Gegensatz zu anderen Spielen dieser Art) das man keine Nahrungstransporter oder gar Rohstoffe manuell durch die Gegend steuern muss. Irgendwie existieren die Ressourcen automatisch auf ALLEN Planeten. Sehr praktisch!
Die anderen Völker politisch im Zaum zu halten ist schwer, die wollen mit größeren "Gaben" zufrieden gestellt werden. Irgendwann kann man dann auch mit denen Handel treiben..
Dennoch: Selbst wenn man ca. 400 Planeten sein Eigen nennen kann.. dauert es elendig lange bis man genügend Erze zusammen hat um die eigene Flotte zu vergrößern..
Spult man planlos vor(Spielgeschwindigkeit) geht so manche Meldung unter.. und Kolonisten schwirren untätig über herrlichen Rohstoffplaneten herum.
Jede neu erschlossene Kolonie kann von Beginn an als "Tankstelle" dienen.
Um Ressourcen zu sparen.. nur Spezialschiffe bauen:
Ein billiges Kolonieschiff und eines mit funktionsfähigem Tarnmechanismus(um durch feindliches Gebiet zu schleichen). Keinesfalls aus Faulheit NUR die teuren(und langsameren) Tarnkolonieschiffe bauen..
Das A und O sind Trägerschiffe, die zig Geschwader an Kampffliegern ausstoßen können..
Finde ich seltsam das meine Raketenfregatten so wenig gegen die Piraten ausrichten konnten..
Ist ja kein Wunder denn die Piraten "cheaten"!!
Im späteren Spiel habe ich ein neues Design für die "Gunboats" entworfen. Stolz vollgepackt mit der besten Technik die man im mittleren Spiel zusammenbekommt.
Und.. Überraschung: Plötzlich tauchen in einem System aus dem Nichts Piraten auf.. mit GENAU DEM DESIGN und blasen meine Flotte in Stücke -.-
Da hat man ja Angst ein neues Design zu entwerfen, wenn das doch umgehend von den Piraten genutzt wird..
Wer mit dieser langen Zeit klar kommt wird sicher überrascht sein, das dieses unscheinbare Spiel so viel Spaß machen kann, aber wie gesagt: Nicht jeder mag MONATELANG(in ECHTZEIT) spielen..

Polaris Sector (PS) is an excellent example of a game filled with great ideas, poorly executed. Unfortunately the new and interesting concepts PS introduces to 4X space games are weighted down by terrible UX and QOL decisions. To be clear, Im not complaining about the simple graphics, which I find rather endearing and entirely acceptable. Rather, fundamental design choices that go against established convention cause unending frustration and make completing even the most basic tasks a real chore, especially as your empire grows in mid to late game.
As some examples:
- Production resource icons are all essentially a circle with a different color. After a dozen hours with the game, I still couldn't tell you what each one stands for. Rather, I know I'm low on the red circle resource, but doing well on the grey circle resource. Why didn't they use icons like every other game in existence? Have the metals be a metal bar, organics be a leaf, etc.
- The stellar map, easily the most important feature in any 4x space game, is sorely lacking in important details that would make understanding the macro situation easy, or inform tactical decisions. For example, your capital system HAS NO ICON TO IDENTIFY IT. This has been standard in every space game in existence, how could they leave this out? Without it, it's difficult to orient your view and locate a system you are looking for.
- The information layer of the map in general is a mess. Your fleets are limited by fuel, especially in the early-mid game, however not every planet will refuel your ships, just those with an orbital facility. But guess what? There is NO ICON to show which planets have orbital facilities!!! So you just click around different paths to a fleet's destination, hoping you find a way to get past enough refueling points to make it. It's simply baffling why they didn't think this was important information to display on the map.
- There is no way to view your planet and fleet summaries on the map, rather you need to click into a menu screen (named "Economics" for some reason), to macro mange your ships, but that screen has no map so its difficult to connect the ship names to their location in your empire. Good luck finding the ship you are looking for without doing that, it is near impossible for larger empires.
- The tech tree is simultaneously one of my favorite and least favorite parts of the game. On one hand it is complex, innovative in its fundamental vs applied science approach, and filled with great "lore" that brings the tech to life. However, navigating and understanding how different techs relate to each-other is a royal pain. There are filter and display options that help, but for some reason the sort and filter options are hidden in the settings menu (huh?), and all the selections you make undo themselves every time you load your game. As the common theme, it is unnecessarily frustrating, and makes me wonder if the designer actually played a 4X space game before.
- Aside from the Automation AI, ship designer and tech tree, there are not many aspects of the game that stand out in any way. Actually, there are not many other aspects of the game at all. There are no mechanisms for culture, traditions, story-driven missions, perk systems, race development, or anything else seen in other 4X games - so the overall depth of the game feels deep in a few areas, but incredibly shallow in most others.
- The AI Diplomacy is crude and confusing, but that has been covered in other reviews so Ill leave it out here. Honestly, I realize AI Diplomacy is a difficult feature VERY few games have gotten right, so I can look past its lackluster implementation here.
I am looking forward to PS 2, and hope it will be developed with a larger team and a larger budget. It's a shame that this first game flubbed the fundamentals so badly, because it shows so much promise in a number of areas.

game basically doesn't even run on win 10, do not recommend. i'm sure i could get it working as it seems to be an issue with having multiple displays, but there are a lot of other games i'd rather play instead of dealing with that. if i could refund it i would (got in a bundle.)

It pains me to see such mixed reviews. I keep Polaris Sector downloaded ready to go back to on a whim. There really isn't another Space 4x that does what this does. The research being a big unique part of that. A person can get sideways on the economy pretty easy until you learn how to manage resources. I love designing ships, and the research to be able to upgrade to hold off an invasion isn't always within reach, or the minerals to build those upgrades. The game is very customizable to set up to your play preferences, pirates or not, shape of galaxy etc.
I believe this game will be enjoyable for those who look forward to space strategy games, especially those who've played them all and are looking for one that is a bit different than the rest.
I am a regular 4x game player and have played them for years. At first, I passed on this after trying it out. But after eventually spending more time with it, I realized that this one is kind of a hidden gem.
I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi 4x games with Great Ship Customization Real Time Controllable Ship Battles. One of the main reasons Stellaris doesn't hold my interest as much as this does. That being said, this game is nowhere near as polished as something like Stellaris. There are bugs here and there, including full crashes, so save often. The space battles are cool, but controlling your ships is derpy in multiple ways, as is control grouping your fleet. It's far more frustrating than it should be, making a lot of the features in the space battles less useful than they should be.
I also really like the research system. It's strange at first, but once you figure it out, it's quite good! Plus, it has some variation from race to race, making each race feel much more unique in which tech it receives and when. I also like how different components balance differently on each ship. If you like depth and complexity in ship design, you'll love all this!
Yes, ship design is interesting. While the use of various component sizes that aren't able to be rotated requires you to Tetris your ship together, it forces you to make decision on how to prioritize aspects of your design.
The AI is good, but not great. It's one of those games that once you get to a certain point and you know what's going on, it becomes easy to steamroll. But that's a problem with a lot of these games. And in this case, there is no multiplayer.
Regarding planet development; I made the mistake on my first full play through to queue individual buildings on EVERY planet. I even made templates for different types of planets. While it is cool that you get this level of micromanagement if you want, I recommend that you NOT DO IT THIS WAY! Every planet that is not Earthlike or Gaia requires some sort of "Housing" for your population. So you have to manage building these vs your production/mining/agricultural buildings, right? Wrong! Set the planet to Mining/Agricultural/Innovation/Industrialization and let the AI develop the planet. It actually does a good job of building what it should efficiently, prioritizing what your empire needs. It'll even build police automatically as needed. You can insert your own building into the queue and then it works around them. It's actually a great system that make having an empire with hundred of planets totally feasible without being a nightmare. The Economics screen with sortable columns is your friend at this stage of the game, too.
Overall, this game has a lot of depth. It's sad that it didn't get the attention from gamers or the developers post-release that it deserved. I doubt it will get further patching, which is sad, and it'll likely fade into obscurity. Despite being overall far better than the Latest Master of Orion, Endless Space, and many others. Stellaris is a great game in it's own right, but it focuses too much on the politics of your empire and less on the fun parts for me. In a nut shell, if you like grand empire 4x games with great ship building and large empire management capabilities, grab this game on sale and give it a try!
The game itself deserve a praise. There are of course good and bad sides, like everywhere but I will try to be objective.
Good side:
• it does have tremendously large tech tree (you may easly finish a game even before completing whole tech tree)
• this game DOES NOT CRASH - yes, it did not crashed even single time
• extremaly efficient - game does not have any lags, it loads in 2-3 seconds even mid game on the largest galaxy, it allows smooth and (again) lag free experience - Paradox should learn from this Developer how to do efficient coding
• interesting approach to designing ships - you have plenty of options, and you can tweak any design you want (you may have armoured, combat transporters, and on the other hand, you may have completely unarmed carriers - you may even create a fighter carrier out of a corvette)
• Artificial Intelligence is not that bad as one may think - you do have to battlestation your borders and you have to find ways to be faster in technology and production than enemy, so it is at least a bit of challenge, and during battle, AI is quite often realizing well if it will be defeated and try to escape
• graphics are alright, some are nice, some mediocere
• texts during diplomacy are usually funny
• music is alright (it is not score by Andreas Waldentoft from Paradox, so, don't expect anything epic but it is like I said, alright)
• back again to technology - lore writters itself knew a lot about physics or had access to someone who is very well familiar with it, as they did really nice job providing interesting descriptions and ideas about multitude of technology pieces - putting real world physics into nice sci-fi realm
• very large control over tactical space battles together with well written AI - on many occasions enemy used different approaches (AI) to counter my forces, even of course, couldn't win but changes in approach is what here matters - it shows vast possibilities (and user interface allows it) as well quite well written AI for tactical space combat
Bad side:
• far too little space species to let this game compete with AAA tittles in this - reason is probably because they made each race very unique and it would be probably difficult due to cost constraints to make more of them
• extremaly poorly made user interface for research screen - because there is loads of loads of technologies, scrolling through them is daunting task and the most useful way of proceeding with technology (as a begining player, not the one who knows in advance about specific technologies there) is to put everything on "autopilot" - once in a while, you may click "prioritize", but that's all
• sometimes no information about important elements - you have to guess what it is for and why it is important (there is for example purple research icon that serves no purpose at all... until mid-game when you realize, that it is important but you must learn it hard way even you see this icon/resource from the very begining)
• Not much reason to involve into spying if you are top-notch-researcher in the galaxy - even to get information about enemy fleets, not realy important as you get theirs amount as soon you meet the species - ok, you don't get details, but who needs it? as long as you know relative amount, you know what you have to, to win
• no events except pirates and occasional "anomalies" are so dull, that no reason to even read about them - just click and get bonus resources (the only reason to have storage in scouts but it is so dull, no matter how much storage you have because there resources are "teleported" to your empire in instant)
Bottom line:
This game deserves Thumb Up. Why? Because it deserves so - it is letting you nicely, calmly, go off real world life, just to go into not-thrilling space conquest with nice ships and calm atmosphere. Yes, it is good as calm and nice relax after work. Unfortunately, not everyone like it this way, so, not everyone will like it - I don't like Arma, but it does not mean the game is bad, it is just not for me. This game is alright and it is VERY, VERY WELL written (from programming standpoint and by loads of technology descriptions - Paradox, again, you can learn from them).
Every race has their own unique designs for every ship.
And it's like a game inside a game when you are playing in a tetris to get maximum from your new battleship.

That's the best way I can sum up my thoughts on this game. To be brutally honest, it is not a great game. It's not even a good game. Lack of modding support means that whatever potential this has is pretty much nothing beyond what you already see.
Ironically, there's a decent amount of race customization but none of it matters. As far as I can tell, none of the base game species have any race-specific techs beyond the hulls of their starships, nor do they have any real unique gameplay styles. The points system used to create each of the races means that you can copy the bonuses of one (most of the time), but as I've said, it won't matter.
The ground and space combat are both highly underwhelming and not very interesting. It can best be described as "hope you have a bigger number than the enemy" when it comes to ground battles, and for space battles (which operate in a wierd RTS layer for some reason), you just want to swarm your ships and concentrate firepower. There's little strategy involved, and you can't really see comparative enemy or fleet strength.
Most of the ship-based technologies are sidegrades at best, which is unfortunate as it loses the feel of power creep that makes 4X games a lot of fun. Upgrading a ship after unlocking a new technology is also a tedious process, as you need to make sure you have enough space for it, including its supporting reactors for power-hungry techs like shields. New buildings aren't really unlocked in the middle and late game, and the same can be said for ground units, making that aspect feel very static and one-note.
There's no real events that happen in terms of emergent gameplay. The best you can hope for is to put it on max- or near-max speed and just let the research, colony, or build times tick down.
As for research, there really isn't much to say beyond it tries a different approach than other games with fundamental and applied sciences, but fails anyway. A conventional tech tree would provide a much greater sense of direction and progression, unlike whatever this system is. I'm sure it could be used in a neat way, but it doesn't exactly live up to whatever potential it currently has, unfortunately.
There is an optional endgame crisis, which is a fun event, but the time it takes to reach that stage is just not worth it.
As for presentation, it feels really ugly and cheap. The UI is just horrible, with no real way to see a planet or fleet list, meaning that empire management is a chore. The art style is not great, either, and I've found a few typos.
Honestly, it's just not worth the asking price. If you can pick this up for like 5 bucks or less, then maybe. But full price, most definitely not worth it. Too little content.
[b]TL;DR Skip this, and pick up stellaris instead if you can get it for cheap. You're not missing out on much. I wish I could say this is a hidden gem, but it's just barely a bit of metal in the dirt. [/b]
[b]Addendum:[/b] After another playthrough and beating the endgame crisis, I can say that this game is definitely not worth it. Not only is there a serious lack of interesting diplomacy, personality, or events to spice up each game, the game becomes extremely broken in the endgame to the point of absurdity, and not in the fun way. Once you have the ability to colonize gas giants and dwarf planets, you can pretty much just spam colony ships for agricultural and mineral output that allows you to build literal fleets of just the biggest ships in the game, complete with hundreds if not thousands of fighters to swarm enemies. While in other 4X games, this might seem like a fun reward, here it feels like the game is just breaking. Additionally, it begins to perform so slowly that it makes a heavily-modded version of Stellaris look like smooth butter. It's honestly noy even worth the hard drive space, let alone the asking price, even on sale. I hate to say stuff like that, because a lot of these games are passion projects from a niche community, but this is just so bland that it becomes basically forgettable. It feels like one of those bad mid-2000s games that was lost to time and just excavated, and not in the fun novelty way.

А еще читерный комп, который наплевав на экономику, баланс, берет и клепает тьму проклятых истребителей.... А если позабыл про какую то систему - там будет уже 5к истребителей, бой с которыми повесит систему намертво. Даже не говорю что они сожрут любое количество линкоров...
Люблю и ненавижу игру одновременно ><
А еще за кучу лет, разрабы не соизвололи присобачить модуль гиперперехода к сборному линкору....

AI is not stupid and like most other games where AI cheats if you play on hard mode but in this game even on normal gameplay the AI can outsmart you 10/10
Tech tree system is directly effected by the game just like your expansion economy or military the tech tree is very strategic 10/10

This game has really changed from when I played it last. It is quite interesting now. Must of the problems I listed when I put not recommend have been fixed. Turned out to be quite a nice game after all the updates and the DLC. Limited in Hulls so variation is lacking I feel. Hopefully a Polaris Sector 2 would fix this limitation.
Polaris Sector is a absolute thumps up. It is a 4X that has a own track to the galaxy sci fi gengre! Its not unique to not doing the "no turn button" but that itself makes game a much more smooth pace? Whats unique is its tech tree! Its the absolute most technological techtree Ive ever seen in a game. Im surprised non has been inspired by this "project alike" research tree. Maby just bec "eras" and linear techtrees are the most simple to program?
Also a very deep tech tree where the amount of very cool lategame techs never seem to end. The graphics and names gives a realistic touch (compared to gc3). Components are even cooler than dvu 👍

Fleetcombat is aswell in "smotth mode" where you DO NOT move on hex and press end turn =)

A thumps up is also slightly harder than a classic 4X. Try normal first ;) This game has made normal as a "normal hard" (a normal 4X as where everyone seem to love the sandbox).
Drown in this techtree like I did and find out the secrets of a seldom mentioned pionneer. All 4X games included I would absolute rate this as a personal absolute top 5 (before stellaris, civ gengre and gal civ). This because of its looks, music, deeper complexity but not to faar to reach and understand.
First off, check out the positive reviews for why you should play this game. I think the game itself has a lot to offer for select players.
My negative review centers around the fact the game simply isn't fun and does not have a lot of flexibility in terms of how you can play it. See the below notes.
- I've played against the AI at "Normal" and "Challenge" settings. In both cases the gameplay is rather stagnant in the sense that there are only 1-2 optimal strategies. I.e. The first species to get the largest and fastest territory is always ahead. This includes rushing technology that allows you to colonize the most amount of planets first and then switching the combat tech once the sector becomes stagnant. (Obviously this is usually the case in most 4X games but this combined with below notes just compounds the problem).
- Combat has only one optimal strat. Mass fighters, limited bombers, and maybe 1-2 cap ships to follow up. I spent several hours designing and testing fleet strats (primarily at the mid and late game) and every single strategy that did not utilize the above strategy simply failed. There is limited or no counter play built into the game to the above strat so you are forced into this every time.
- Diplomacy (i.e. economic, trade, and science treaties) has limited usage other than being able to bargain for tech or resources. Espionage is actually kind of neat but in terms of effectiveness seems rather limited. (I'll be honest and say I haven't fully experimented with espionage beyond small scale sabotage but again this combination of limited game play just compounds each small issue into a cumulative poo pile).
- The tech tree is cool. - However again there seems to be an easily defined min/max strat that is obvious from the start and deviating from that strat has no potential gains or alternative gameplay - again the obvious linearity of allowable gameplay limits the entire game experience.
- Finally, in the multiple games sequences I ran, I noticed that the 1st species to gain a noticeable advantage always won (at least against other AI opponents). Not once did a less powerful AI come back from an even slight deficit. This was over the course of 6-7 games. Again, this indicates that there are very clearly defined optimal strategies that simply have no counterplay.
Final note - I realize this is not an AAA game and was not expecting an AAA experience but the simplicity and rigidness of game/gameplay (combined with a $39.99 price tag) amount to an exploration of the game mechanics and little more than that.

Any 4x fan who hasn't played this definitely missed out.
Like all 4X games this is certainly very janky... Lots of bad UI, the tech gameplay experiment failed, braindead AI, unusable diplomacy, and more. But it is still one of the best map painting experiences, which stands up to the other top contenders like Civ, Distant Worlds or Stellaris.
I especially like how ship design leads to fleet behaviours, leads to resource waste (or retainment). Surprising how well the late game remains on the same micro management levels as the earlier years (admittedly overall a bit high). Also enjoy how specific resource need to change over time, first the empire needs plutonium, then the new modules need much more iridium, etc.
Very nice game all around, but the diplomacy needs some serious re-works.

I have played many similar games from Masters of Orion to Stellaris and everything in between, and Polaris Sector is a true Gem.

Довольно забавные описания рас и некоторых технологий, интересная необычная схема развития технологий, собирание собственных проектов кораблей из доступных модулей, неплохой ИИ, экономика, управление сражением космических кораблей в реальном времени. А ну еще тут можно перевозить космические станции от мест производства до мест развертывания кораблями разобрав на блоки.

Good but for some reason very underrated.
I can recommend this game however research screen and the whole research mechanism is really confusing. This is the main drawback I can see.
- Research pre-requisites can be strange, you might need to research two-three-six not really useful or relevant equipments before inventing what you really want.
- The whole research process is deadly long. But......Weird, if you click on priority research, you have research result much-much sooner. So better to click on it all the times. But in this case what make sense?
Small note...invasion approach seems to be interesting, you can produce marines, tanks, fighters, boats, etc. But invading planet means you drop the whole bunch on the top of the head of locals and check how numbers are decreasing. Having more potential in this part, for sure...

У разных рас разные корпурса, от этого возможны различные стратегические решения - много дешевого быстроотстраиваемого флота, дорогой, но сильный флот, куча промежуточных вариантов. Стройте ракетоносцы, торпедоносцы, быстрые корабли с лучевым дальнобойным оружеем, авианосные группы и тяжелый крейсерный флот. Разместите в критических точках галактики боевые платформы и наблюдайте как орды врага разбиваются об них словно волны об скалы. Развивайте технологии, крадите технологии, обменивайтесь технологиями, реализуйте их своими собственными руками в вашем идеальном фрегате, крейсере, а может быть в тяжелом истребителе. Сразитесь на уровне сложности "Настоящие соперники" - бросьте вызов своему интеллекту, смекалке и тактическому мышлению. Ах да! Не забудьте накормить ваших подданых, и разбомбить пару планет с ненависными вам соседями по галактике! Конечно могу вам дать совет (если не изменится в будущих версиях игры) - бойтесь этих пушистых, сонных космических панд! У них на старте уже есть крейсер, но это не должно Вас останавливать ;). Галактика должна быть ваша! Никаких компромиссов!

+ оригинальный подход к дереву технологий (отдельно теоретические и прикладные исследования и куча ползунков)
+ политика вроде бы неплохо развита
+/- достаточно развитая RTS боёвка
- почти никакой эксплорейшен
- скучный сити(планет)билдинг
- скучная экономика
Не смотря на наличие оригинальных элементов, они не улучшают основу x4. А собственно основные элементы x4 сделаны слабо. Пойду обратно играть в endless space и stellaris.
Polaris Sector ist durchaus ein Interessantes 4X Spiel hat aber deutliche schwächen und schöpft sein potential überhaupt nicht aus.
Zum einen die positiven Dinge:
- große Galaxiekarten
- solide Performance
- angemessene Grafik
- übersichtliche Menüs
- komplexer Schiffsbau
Zum anderen die negativen Dinge:
- wirklich hässliche Alien-Spezies
- rein militärischer Spielstil also kein Diplomatie-, Kultur- oder Wissenschaftssieg
- Gameplay ist nur auf Krieg ausgelegt
- nur wenige (kolonisierbare) Planetenarten
- wirklich dumme KI
Für eingefleischte Fans von 4X Spielen vielleicht empfehlenswert aber ich würde keine 20,00 Euro dafür ausgeben wollen.

Not completely awful, but on the very low end of mediocre and not at all worth the asking price. There is essentially no planetary control, no economy, an entirely ignorable research system, and for a game with so much automation it comes down to an incredible amount of micromanagement since the only way to play is hyper-wide.
Planets have basically up to 4 options, production, research, mining, or food. Each of those options has one or two buildings that you spam on a planet, and each one you build locks out building slots of the other type. Imagine Stellaris except planets only have districts and nothing else, and population is meaningless. Because the planets are so simple, the automation option for them works fine and is not only recommended but your home planet starts out automated. This basically removes planets from the game, you click on a planet, do a planned colonization which allows you to pick an automation option (the vast majority will be mining or empty), and then you never think about or interact with that planet again.
There is no real "cost" for having a planet, even empty planets with no resources or utility it is recommended to grab just to claim that system and allow refueling in it. So gameplay comes down to colonizing every single planet you can as the techs open up, which is every planet in the galaxy eventually.
There is no "money" in the game or anything similar, no taxes, buildings require a certain amount of population to function, but population grows extremely fast and on automated settings population growth is turned off most of the time. The planet finishes a building that requires 5000 workers, then turns off population control and allows the planet to grow 5000 more pops to work it, then turns population control back on and makes the next building. This is why population is meaningless, there are no growth rates or bonuses for pops, there's no reason to grow any more than you have buildings for them to work, they are just a mechanic that might as well not exist.
The research tree is by default automated, and 99% of it is ship upgrades. Most of the upgrades are marginal. Ship design is the only slightly interesting part of the game, each ship has a grid of open area to place components in of varying sizes, but the game focuses too much on making ship design a puzzle instead of giving you interesting choices. The layout of every ship is not symmetrical and there's a lot of dead space you will never be able to fill. Most of the upgrades you get through the tech system are slightly different sizes of the same part so you can play tetris in your ship plans trying to optimize the layouts. You have like a fuel tank that is 5x5, then you research a tank that is 4x6, then 3x3, each one has very similar space to fuel ratios, it's just three different puzzle pieces to try to fit into the horribly wonky ship frames. It's annoying honestly. This also means you fairly quickly stop paying attention to the research system and just leave it automated, clicking through the spam of new techs as they are finished, barely paying attention to what just finished because it really doesn't matter.
Since the game is all about playing hyper wide, most of the "gameplay" is just you building and moving ships/defenses around, which is fairly slow and tedious.
Diplomacy is bipolar. It has some really extreme weights for various actions that completely shift relations in dramatic and nonsensical ways. A friendly AI you have multiple beneficial deals with can suddenly declare war because your unarmed scout ship spent too much time near their territory for example.
The game has pirates that spawn inside your territory on systems that you don't have any claimed planets, they fly around and instantly destroy all your shipyards and orbital research platforms, when you engage them 90% of the time they just retreat and there's nothing you can do to stop them early on. So it's just constantly following them around with a fleet attacking over and over until finally they decide not to retreat and get destroyed. It's not fun and adds nothing interesting to the game, there is an option to disable them during game setup. They are the only non-AI/player entities in the early game, it makes exploration quite boring (since they don't spawn outside your territory) and if you disable them you have nothing for your ships to fight until you go to war.
Combat is instanced, you open a battle screen and move your ships around and they attack enemies, it's super basic and not at all engaging, you can potentially tell your ships to focus fire a specific target but that's about as much control as you get. The only time you will likely do a manual battle instead of an autoresolve is when you want to retreat, because there's no other way to tell a ship to retreat, you have to sit there and load the battle, click the retreat button, then fast forward through the fight as the ship flies away.
I waited to do a review until after getting the DLC, which I was in no rush to buy, I hoped it would add some much needed depth and polish to the game, it did not. This game apparently goes on sale now for -75% off, so $10, is it worth that? I would not recommend it at that price, but if you want a super simple combat focused strategy game, maybe.
