I really wish I could give this game a neutral review (at the least). With over 40 hours played, I've definitely enjoyed it, but it also has frustrated me to the point where I have to take long breaks before attempting to pick it up again. The latter makes me lean more towards not recommending it, since Steam doesn't have a neutral option. I loved playing the old DOS version of this game as a kid whenever I'd visit with my uncle, and I was really excited about a newly updated version. It scratches that nostalgic itch, but was also a bit disappointing.

[u] What I Enjoyed [/u]

[*] I enjoyed the updated graphics. I felt like it was a good blend of modern polish and the nostalgic pixel vibes from the original game.
[*] Each journey down the trail feels well-paced. I liked that each path down the trail could be different based on what questlines you encounter and which path you choose to take.
[*] I liked the inclusion of Native American characters and stories. While the historical period is simplified in the game, it did touch on some of the conflict of that time which I appreciated.
[*] I enjoyed the daily challenges (fishing, more difficult journeys, etc.). It gave more options for playing other than a 2+ hour journey down the standard trails.
[*] I liked that there were specific journeys you could take to unlock useful items, different quests, and new character types for future playthroughs. I honestly wished there were more of these cause they were the part of the game I liked the best.
[*] The variety of different ways to play the game is what makes this game replayable for me and keeps me coming back despite any frustrations.

[u] Bugs, Issues, and What Could Be Better [/u]

[*] Some gameplay feels overly scripted/limiting. Trading on the trail can be frustrating because of the predefined choices you have to select from that (at least half the time) don't match quantities or items you have available.
[*] You get little mini "quests" for each section of the trail, but a lot of the time it feels impossible to complete them because you never run into the items needed to finish them. It's like "Here have some hope! ... Oh wait, never mind."
[*] The "building the railroad" community event can stop working entirely. The only work around I found was backing up my main save, deleting all save files, and then starting a new game. This frustrated me, epecially because even the new saves would eventually stop working.
[*] Gold mining is only available on the California trail, but you can choose a prospector for any of your journeys after unlocking it. This annoyed me before I realized they were only useful for one trail,
[*] Some of the hunting sections and the river crossings felt punishing more than fun. I know the game is meant to be challenging, but these parts of the game didn't always feel balanced. Even when I made what felt reasonable choices, I failed more river crossings than I succeeded. Hunting could also be frustrating - entire sections were often only small game, and none of my characters were particularly good at hunting, no matter which classes I picked.
[*] The game occasionally crashes to desktop. At one point it crashed on every load, though installing missing DirectX DLLs seemed to help.

Overall, this game can be fun when it's working properly, but technical issues and limited options in some mechanics really made it frustrating for me. I love a game with a good challenge, but felt like I was being punished more often than rewarded and that just makes it hard for me to recommend it.

Для тех кто не в курсе, тут как в helldivers, тяжело всех доставить живыми и здоровыми. Так и задумано, это ещё с первой части заведено, а первая часть вышла ещё тогда когда холодная война шла

큰마차와 '매력적'특성, 마차 윤활유가 확연하게 좋다 말고는 그럭저럭 굴러가는 여행길임
각각의 여행을 구석구석 핥아먹는 수준이 아니면 가격에 실망하게 될 것

Wanted to really like this game and it had some nice features but when it came down to brass tacks, some systems severely need updated and some bugs fixed. Positives were the graphics and dialogue choice design. Some interesting mechanics.

Negatives were probably the linear world and the broken inventory system. You could have 3 bags of bullets with only 5 bullets in each bag because there is absolutely no combining inventory stacks, and the same applies to tools or meat, making it unrealistically difficult. This lead to my eventual refund was the lack of support on inventory and the fact the game hasn't been updated to fix such issues for at least 2 years.

While the game has it moments and can be fun at times, it seems there is an annoying bug that the devs have no rush in fixing. You WILL lose your save progress. The menu will say "Your Progress Will Be Saved" this is a lie. You will lose anywhere from 30-45 minutes of play time to no fault of your own. This bug has been in a game for a while according to forums I've found online.

Far more complex and far more devious than the original from my childhood! Variety is the spice of life, and there are so many different scenarios, routes, and options to choose from. I've played over 19 hours and have barely gotten through 1/3.

Needs mods. Absolute woke garbage and in my only attempt at playing the game, had all 16 character options for my party as women, 14 of which were non-white. WTF is this? I wanted the classic public school library play with a little update to sound and graphics, not a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to Portland 2026.

It's got loads of memories like having the exact same hunting, and river crossings/character deaths.
Plus loads of its own new flavor, loved the art and quests in particular!

long winded and boring, you cant trade for things you actually want because all trades are preset. ya you can haggle but that's also long winded and boring. overall gameplay gets stopped every 30 seconds for something stupid and i cant believe I've wanted to play this game for so long and its nothing at all like the original..

its cute, despite being a walking sim this game provides allot of content. I do appriciate the trail exploring the complex relationship between pioneers and native groups but i wanted more. I guess that speaks to something I learned about and maybe that was the devs' goal the whole time.
I should mention a distinct lack of game play, i feel like some of the complexity of the original is lost here; but im also speaking through a lense of nostalgia so take that for what you will.
the rafting part is still the most fun. 8/10

I thought I would get this game as a nice stroll down memory lane. I loved to play The Oregon Trail When I was a kid and computers were few and far between. Largely only in school. I thought wrong. This is not what I hoped it would be. To be fair I didn't get very far before I felt the need to turn it off.

The first thing that struck me is one of the first things that pops up before you start the game is a statement about inclusivity. Life in the US at that time was not good for a lot of people. Changing that to reflect a happy go lucky time is not right. Rewriting history so it fits the game seems wrong. Settlers were often terrible to natives, pretending that they were not or it didn't is just lying. Natives did some horrible things as well. I understand that you can make your game anyway you want, but put a different name to it. This is not a remake of the original. It's a different game entirely. A bastardized version if you will.

Very first thing mentioned in game was an "inclusivity" message showing that politics was involved with the development of the game... I'm sick of political propaganda being at the forefront of game and movie development. If the game reveals propaganda or I find it in a game I'm playing I refuse to play it. Games are and ESCAPE from reality. They should NEVER try to cow to some political agenda. Taking one of the first games ever made for PC and politicizing it is disgusting.

Actual playtime is satisfactory, though not much re-playability..
it's too scripted needs flexibility.
If it had a 'Free Roam' journey option, and an actual free choice selection pool for the team, my play time would be 10x more. but as it is now just feels as if it's been restrictively designed for compliant workflow.
The dev team makes sure you know their diverse political views with limited team selection options and cringe dialogues. It like having an HR dept. on the frontier.
California Trail is the only journey with any gold mining and is the best one to play.
I don't like the unlock system and the main screen is just a mess.

This is my go-to COZY game, when all I want is a cup of tea, a warm blanket and a... brutal dysentery survival game in adorable pixel art and cutesy characters.
It offers exactly what it promises, namely a version of the infamous The Oregon Trail for modern gamers, but topped with tons of new content, DLCs, community content and alternative routes, creatures and minigames.
It's hard, of course. But in a cozy way.
I wouldn't be able to explain myself any better, so why don't you just give it a try? :)

The original Oregon Trail game was great, it was difficult requires strategy and forethought, and the ability to withstand multiple waves of disentary as if you had just eaten the entire Taco Bell Menu.. the difficulty made it great.. But this new version is the anti game.. its boring as hell, allows for no real strategy foraging, fishing etc.. This version is simply a boring overly simplistic toddler level game draped in the lie that this is anything like the nostalgic jem we all came here looking for.

Ремейк культовой игры (для американцев). Не играл в прошлые версии, увы , поэтому не смогу сравнить.
Если смотреть на игру в отрыве от оригинала и прошлых версий, то она увлекательна. 4 часа пролетели незаметно: менеджмент ресурсов , энкаунтеры в пути (от расследования убийства до 4ой встречи одной и той же семьи),мини-игры и прочее.
Визуально игра выглядит хорошо, хотя графика простовата (будто бы с мобилок порт). Музыка отличная, особенно кантри в тему.
