The biggest issue with this one is that all the points of interest are too far apart resulting in overlong periods of nothing. Just getting to your cabin in the opening of the game itself is an exercise in tedium, and every area is like this. It all ends up feeling like filler, because that's likely what it is. A means to pad the runtime so it's longer than 2 hours so people won't refund.

It's not even like a slow, long build towards something can't work well. But here you just end up sprinting everywhere. And nothing sucks the tension out of a horror game more than a lack of threat and getting through areas as quick as possible. The game even has a crouch button, complete with little icon on the corner of your screen implying stealth might be a mechanic. Even tells you about how you lantern attracts attention. But non of it matters. It's a ruse. Turn your lantern on and sprint everywhere and you'll reach the credits just fine.

I got this for I think £1.69 and I would say even that was too much to spend.

Что сказать, товарищи? Потраченного времени жаль. Мне продали сырую кривую АМНЕЗИЮ и заставили давиться и плакать за мои же деньги. Игра - отвратительная, сюжет - отсутствует, симулятор бега и хождения 10 из 10.
Не советую тратить время и деньги лучше еще раз пройдете выше упомянутую амнезию.

Aventura en 1ra persona de terror y suspenso. Es interesante. La resolución de puzzles es entretenida aunque son muy sencillos. Los elementos para avanzar nunca estarán muy lejos de tu ubicación y es mas bien encontrar objetos para poder avanzar que puzzles en si mismos.
Me llamo la atención, pese a ser un juego completamente lineal, la escala de determinadas zonas. La mayoría de las zonas son de transición y ambientación, sin nada por hacer realmente mas que admirar el entorno o transmitir tensión, pero algunos lugares, como la zona del pantano, son increíblemente grandes para que tu única función ahí sea pasar corriendo de una punta a la otra. Eso me gusto bastante.
El juego apuesta mucho a la tensión ambiental y hace un buen trabajo. Los entornos están buenos, son oscuros y transmiten agobio.
La mayor contra del juego en mi opinión es la criatura que nos acecha… me pareció totalmente decepcionante. En el momento que la vemos por primera vez y entendemos que podemos huir sin problemas, pierde muchísimo potencial y el peso recae en el suspenso ambiental y narrativo (que se mantiene toda la experiencia)
final también decepcionante.
Recomendado con buena rebaja.

I really enjoyed this game and can't wait to play the other games in this series. The story was pretty interesting, even when you are not into Lovecraft that much. The graphics also looked pretty nice and the best part were the sound effects and atmosphere. Cryengine might be dated but it runs flawlessly.

Gameplay wise, there wasn't that much to do but it was enough to keep you invested. There were chase sequences where you had to hide or outrun a creature. You also had to read notes to piece the story together, find key items, backtrack a little bit, open doors and find your way around.

The world was well crafted and I felt entertained for the 3-4 hours that this game took me to complete. Only thing I disliked was the lack of achievements for replay value. I would have loved some collectibles and a little bit more interaction and background information for the story.

Other than that, it was a solid but short experience with an interesting story that makes you ask for more.

Had The Alien Cube on my wishlist for a while. Finally got it and then found out this was the prequel so decided to play this first. Pretty simple walking simulator with fetch quests while you unravel what's going on from reading notes and observation.

The visuals are fantastic. The CryEngine really shines here. That together with the excellent use of sound really immerse you into a sense of dread and fascination. Level design is great too, with impressive attention to detail. Quite an achievement for a solo dev.

The in game vsync is useless and makes the frame rate worse, so just leave it off and enable vsync through Nvidia or Adrenalin software. I believe its a CryEngine issue, not the dev's fault. Seems the game runs smoothest at 60fps so try to lock in for that. I've seen some people mention that the jump action is laggy. Its not explained in game but its a hold down and release to jump mechanic. So it works just fine.

Looking forward to the sequels.

Considering this is a indie game, its pretty solid and nice project. Good Lovercraft inspired experience. If you like indie horror games, you will probably like it and i can recommend. Graphics was probably the best aspect of the game, audio, atmosphere and story was good. Not super mindblowing or original, but interesting enough. I enjoyed playing this game.
Dont read further to avoid spoilers: [spoiler] The main gameplay was rather weak, it had no interesting or challenging puzzles to play with. It was very linear, your whole job was just to find item that opened the door and passed you to another location. It was not much to do, just a vehicle to go through a story. That might sound bad, but i was not bored, because i can enjoy walking simulators when atmosphere is good. I also dont think that game has some alternative ending and (99%) its not something i will play again. [/spoiler] Even though i recommend this game and deserves your attention. Throw money on this dev!

Die Grafik in ultra HD ist gestochen scharf und wunderschön. Die Welt ist sehr detailliert gestaltet worden, genau passend für ein Horrorspiel.

Der Sound ist auch genial, immer hört man Geräusche, Töne und Musik, die zum Gruseln einladen.

Das Spiel besitzt keine Errungenschaften.

Ich habe das Spiel für 2,39€ gekauft.

Ich empfehle das Spiel!

The sound is fantastic too; you constantly hear noises, sounds, and music that create a truly eerie atmosphere.

The game has no achievements.

I bought the game for €2.39.

Хорошая бродилка с любопытной историей. Есть ощущение, что автор вдохновлялся Говардом Филлипсом Лавкрафтом. Сложность игры заключается лишь в том, что при первом прохождении игрок не понимает куда ему надо идти, что искать и куда надо применять найденные предметы.
Игру действительно можно пройти за 2-3 часа.
Очень порадовала стартовая локация (дневной лес) и болото. Чудовище мне не кажется проблемным/сложным. Атмосфера в игре очень понравилась.
Я доволен игрой :3

Первая проба пера от Alessandro Guzzo и неплохой инди-хоррор, по совместительству.
Ещё не так лаконично, как [b][i][url=steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198067031352/recommended/1099220?snr=1_5_9__402]"The Alien Cube"[/url][/i][/b], но уже так же красиво и атмосферно, хоть и кривовато.
Шероховатости имеют место быть, как и откровенная затянутость многих геймплейных моментов во второй половине игры.
Но хорошая картинка, разнообразие локаций (чей дизайн был оформлен очень достойно) и неплохо проработанный сюжет - не дают мне никакого иного варианта, кроме как рекомендовать этот проект.
Определённо, игра дала мне приятные ощущения и эмоции - отличные от множества других шаблонных проектов.

For a first game it's pretty good. I'm not usually one for these run and hide types of horror games, but my thirst for Lovecraftian media pulled me to it, and I'm glad I played it. Short, though a little repetitive, and sometimes the enemy can be in some truly bad places, honestly. At least the checkpoints are very generous which made up for that. Not bad.

Dieses sehr kurzweilige Spiel kann ich auf jeden Fall empfehlen.
Ganz kurz:
+ spannende und beklemmende Atmosphäre
+ sehr einfaches Gameplay
+ interessante und spannende Story

- trotz CryEngine hat mich die Grafik (auch für 2017) nicht vollends überzeugt
- wozu die auffindbaren Geheimnisse (wenn das jemand herausgefunden hat, bitte mich mal wissen lassen)
- ein bisschen mehr Interaktionsmöglichkeiten

Zum Gameplay:
Super easy. Man kann zwar nichts verstellen oder umbelegen, aber dass muss man auch nicht, da es die für jeden Spieler gängigen Keys sind. Mit 5-6 Std. Spielzeit ist es zwar etwas kurz und schnell vorbei, aber das tut dem Spiel keinen Abbruch und für eine 1-Mann Entwicklung schon eine sehr ordentlich Leistung.

Grafik:
Dafür das es mit der CryEngine Entwickelt wurde, hat mich die Grafik nicht vom Hocker gerissen. Das Monster ist sehr rudimentär gewesen und die Bäume und Büsche waren sehr plastisch. Da hat FarCry, obwohl älter, besser ausgesehen. Aber nicht für Ungut, ich fand es trotzdem gut, und da sich eh alle weitestgehend im dunkeln abspielt, ist das zu verschmerzen.

Story/Stimmung:
Ich persönlich habe noch gar nichts vom Chthullu Universum gelesen oder gesehen. Somit war das eine herausragende erste Begegnung. Das Spiel hält den Spieler permanent in einem beklemmenden und ängstlichen Zustand, der bis zum Schluss nicht ablässt. Wenn einen das Monster jagt, hat man regelrecht Panik, weil der dazu entstehende Sound auch noch sein übriges dazu tut. Perfekt.
Die Story wird über Journaleinträge und Buchseiten erzählt und ist auch sehr gut gelöst so. Ich habe mich abgeholt gefühlt und konnte in die Story gut eintauchen. Gleichzeitig hat es Lust auf mehr Lovecraft Werke gemacht.

Fazit:
Wie oben schon kurz beschrieben, kann man sich das Game für die paar Taler auf jeden Fall zulegen. Du wirst nicht enttäuscht...außerdem unterstützt man den Entwickler in seinen (hoffentlich) zukünftigen Projekten.

Ich werde mir jetzt auf jeden Fall den Nachfolger (The Alien Cube) reinziehen.

Just finished The Land of Pain and wow… this game nails atmosphere-driven horror. No cheap jump scares, just pure isolation and dread. The forest, caves, and ruins all look incredible, but it’s the sound design that gets you—every creak and whisper makes you paranoid.

It’s slow-paced, but that’s what makes it work. You’re alone, no weapons, no help, just running and trying to survive whatever’s stalking you. If you like Lovecraft-style horror that sticks with you after you quit, this one’s a must.

The Land of Pain хоррор-адвенчура о выживание в проклятом месте.
В самом начале игры нас притягивает умиротворяющая атмосфера дневного леса, по которому мы гуляем, но затем все резко переворачивается с ног на голову и мы начинаем медленно погружаться в бездну неведомого ужаса. Пугают тут не скримерами (их тут почти нет), а зловещей атмосферой, что мы сами начинаем накручивать себя. Когда в поиске безопасного места бродим по ночному лесу, то и дело натыкаясь на обглоданные трупы, а вокруг слышатся страшные звуки - это действительно щекочет нервы, ибо в начале игры ещё не знаешь, чего от игры ждать.

Плюсы
* Мощная, давящая атмосфера
* Красивые пейзажи и эффект тумана
* История подается через записки
* Звуковое сопровождение

Минусы
* На объекты можем только смотреть, а брать в руки и вертеть нет
* Нет показателя уровня выносливости (не понятно в какой момент у персонажа начнется отдышка)
* Монстр рандомно появляется и замечает нас со светом и без него. И чтобы от него избавиться, необходимо бежать до тех пор, пока не достигнем безопасной зоны

Вердикт
Первую половину игры вообще ничего не понятно, а потом приходят догадки. А отсутствие в игре других персонажей давит на чувство одиночества перед неизведанным и не покидает ощущение присутствия чего-то потустороннего
☑️Подойдет фанатам ужасов и ценителям атмосферы в играх
❌Не подойдет, если не любите симулятор ходьбы, а также фанат скримеров

I played like three hours, then pressed Start then exit and got back to the main menu, pressed down, down, down to the Exit, except it skipped over it and went to the top where it said New Game. Guess what happened
Games actually great. Great choice with the CryEngine.
This is a standard but good game where you are mostly outdoors. It is more atmospheric and beautiful than most Indie-Horror games I have played. So I guess it deserves a thumbs up!

Ein einfacher Walking Simulator mit schöner Grafik und einer gruseligen Atmosphäre.
Die Story wird fast nur durch Textseiten, die man findet erzählt und lässt einen neugierig auf das Ende werden. Hin und wieder muss man vor einem Monster flüchten, und meistens irgendwelche Gegenstände finden, um weiter zu kommen. Für kleines Geld hat man hier circa 4 bis 5 Stunden gute Unterhaltung!
Es gibt wohl noch eine Fortsetzung oder zumindest ein weites Spiel vom selben Entwickler.
Denke, das werde ich auch noch irgendwann mal spielen!

Bonjour,
Je n'ai malheureusement pas terminé le jeu, en effet, même si l'ambiance est bien pensée et les graphismes sont très sympa surtout ceux de jour, un peu moins fan de certains éléments de nuit. Mais passons si je n'ai pas terminé le jeu c'est principalement pour le côté beaucoup beaucoup trop long des runs entre chaque zone, il faut parfois courir pendant un temps interminable (coucou les marais), pour aller d'une zone à une autre et sans objectif ni autre chose que courir / marcher. Enfin je trouve les "énigmes" un peu redondantes au fur et à mesure que le jeu avance, une clé à aller chercher pour ouvrir une porte, qui permet de rentrer dans une pièce qui permet de trouver un objet qui permet de trouver une clé qui permet d'ouvrir une porte qui permet.. bref, dommage parce que l'histoire et l'ambiance est au rendez-vous. Je ne recommande pas de mon point de vue, mais vous pouvez malgré tout soutenir le développeur et tenter votre chance.

Я пройшов цю гру й отримав дуже цікавий досвід. Ти просто живеш своїм життям посеред лісу в хатинці, але оп раптом тебе затягує в інший всесвіт, у Країну Болю, і тобі доведеться з неї вибратися.
У грі справді гарна графіка. І до звуків питань не маю звуки справді створюють хорошу атмосферу, що ще більше занурює в гру.
Гра має свою атмосферу психологічного жаху, ніби за тобою хтось стежить.

Але велика частина цієї гри — це біганина з локації на локацію, що з часом буде дратувати все більше й більше.
Сама гра побудована на тому, що ви просто бігаєте, шукаєте різні ключі/інструменти по будинках, відкриваєте двері й читаєте історії інших осіб за записками.
І ще час від часу з’являється монстр, який за вами біжить.

Правда, фінал гри мене розчарував. [spoiler] Я думав, коли ми повернемось додому до нашої хатинки, то в лісі буде так само яскраво світити сонце, як і на початку гри, і ми будемо знати, що вже в безпеці.
Але коли ми повернулися додому, атмосфера залишилась такою ж суворою, ніби ми й не покидали Країну Болю. І за мить знову прийшов той монстр і забрав нас ще в якийсь інший всесвіт.
Ми ще не встигли повернутися додому, як одразу знову відправляємось назад у Країну Болю. [/spoiler]

Гра насправді цікава — цікава атмосфера, моментами непогані скрімери.
Але те, що ти [strike] ходиш [/strike] бігаєш 70% часу багато чого псує.
Я б не сказав, що сильно рекомендую цю гру, але, напевно, я її більше рекомендую, ніж ні.
Якщо вам не критично трохи побігати, і ви хочете отримати цікавий досвід, моторошну атмосферу в лісі, знаходити ключі, відкривати двері та розгадувати сюжет можете спокійно проходити.
Але попереджаю: вам доведеться затиснути Shift не на короткий час.

P.S. Шкода, що гра не має українських субтитрів чи тексту. Дуже сподіваюсь, що в майбутньому ви їх додасте це точно оцінить багато українських гравців.

Not a huge fan of the unintuitive puzzles where you have to basically click everything or having to backtrack everywhere to make connections that don't really make sense, paired with the main character's retarded commentary.
I don't want to knock someone else's game too much, but being that it isn't free, I was more annoyed than I otherwise might have been.

Графика приятная, но, конечно никакой [b] "фотореалистичности" [/b] здесь нет, как написано в описании. Обожаю творчество Лавкрафта и тут [i] сильно [/i] проглядываются его мотивы. Всегда понятно что от тебя хочет игра, а если не понятно - есть подсказки.
Единственный минус это наверное монстр который преследует гг в некоторых локациях. От него легко убежать, но он часть времени находится в инвизе, из-за этого бывает сложно его заметить. Так же игра сообщает о том что со светом вас легче обнаружить, так вот это неправда. Монстр вас палит в любом случае если вы находитесь достаточно близко к нему.

What are you going to look at or maybe play, is the first game in a row. Cosmic horror line with 2 and soon 3 games. With Lovecraftian ideas about another realities, huge monsters, madness and inevitability of doom, if all this got on your way ;)
Mostly, it was OK, not too cool and not too bad. I didn't have troubles with the game, but it wasn't entertaining. The second game is better, but not a lot.

A nice creepy walking sim with the occasional spooky part. It's a good game with a nice setting, though the story doesn't exactly end with a conclusion that brings everything full circle. At the end of it I really wasn't sure what happened to be honest. What was going on? What happened? I guess the game does a good job of making you question the reality you're given, which I do think is a splendid idea.

Puzzles are pretty easy, it just takes some time to actually find the things you need or be in the right place. The hint system is vague, but I think I actually prefer it to be this way. Anyway, I don't really have a lot to say at this point. I played the game, more than once at this point. It only takes about 2 hours to finish, but I've given up on it a few times I think. Glad I finished it this time around.

It didn't occur to me that this game actually pre-dates Alien Cube. Yet it's also very well crafted with great attention to the visuals and atmosphere. Monster design was a bit meh, and suspense overall was pretty low, but I have lots of respect for Alessandro for being able to make a very beautiful and dark world.
I'm looking forward to playing Cosmic Fear with lots of anticipation.

Bought on lovecraft sale for $2 and definitely delivers the cosmic horror experience with great sound design, visuals, and atmosphere. There is no combat, just puzzles and some escape sections that all work well. Some of the levels can be too sprawling but the game does have a hint feature which tells you where to go and there are numerous walkthroughs on youtube. It also ends after around three hours before running from the entity can get annoying to the player. I would recommend for any lovecraft fan.

Interessante, jogo bem legal, vale a experiência, principalmente em uma boa promoção.
O jogo é um walking simulator, isso é fato, com alguns puzzles (bem simples) e, em minha particular opinião, possui até um excessivo back-tracking (é aquilo de ficar indo pra frente e voltando para poder prosseguir no jogo), raramente os itens que forem pegos serão para utilizar no mesmo local em que se está, devendo voltar para abrir uma porta ou resolver uma situação, para depois ir um pouco mais a frente e voltar de novo para resolver outra coisa, então é comum passar pelo mesmo local, encruzilhada ou casa mais de 1 ou 2 vezes...
Entretanto, o jogo possui uma boa atmosfera e bom sound-design, o que torna uma experiência interessante, e até provoca alguns arrepios em alguns momentos.
No geral, vale a experiência de uma jogatina.

I recommend this but it does have a some faults as well.

For the positives it has an interesting and engaging story. I like the mystery in it, I think the narrative is told really well. As well as that considering 1 guy made this by himself it's incredible. I ran into basically no bugs and overall it's a fun game.

The monster is really annoying though. It isn't scary, just annoying. It just floats around conveniently wherever you need to go and it's a boring 1 hit kill kinda deal. The graphics in some areas are really bad too, it gave me skyrim 2012 vibes in the mines and forest. As well as that it's essentially a back and forth search simulator for most of the game. Which considering you're searching items that have only one specific use and are gone as soon as you've unlocked the next section, it gets boring and grindy. The gameplay was the worst part of the game.

Overall I'd give this indie game a 7/10. I'm excited to play the next one and I'm assuming that it's got a lot of improvements over this first game.

Нудний і жуєе темний симулятор ходьби. Замість страху ця гра викликає роздратування. Персонаж ходить ніби у нього дерев'яна нога і він страшно кульгає. Основна робота це кульаво ходити туди сюди а оскільки сама механіка ходьби корява то це якісь тортури. Нічого не видно в більшості випадків - оточення дуже темне. Персонаж часто озвучує банальні речі які гравець має в нормальній грі побачити без тикання носом і це займає доволі довгий час. Сіквел The Alien Cube пройшла, вона теж має всі ці недоліки але все ж вона мабуть викликала меньше роздратування загалом.

I got 30 minutes into the game and backed out. I wasn't to happy with it. There was not enough horror in it and it was really laggy. It was really boring to me. The game was also too dark. The light helped a little bit but not much. There was also too much going back and forth to get the things that you needed to move on in the game.

Decent game.
I started this last year but never finished it. had to start a new game because the save was on my laptop. I enjoyed it. Some fetch quests were tad questionable/ out of the way but it didn't ruin the experience.
I also played these in reverse order starting with the Cosmic demo, Alien Cube and then this.
Great series so far.
Graphics were good. Load times are quick.
For the price it shouldn't missed.

Pretty good! Solid lovecraftian horror game. Pretty much just a walking simulator and it seemed to drag towards the end but the story was interesting and the atmosphere is nice! The monster was pretty cheesy looking and I hated the chase parts with it. I also wish there was some actual puzzles here not just find hammer to open boards to get key type stuff. Enjoyed it overall. Time to play the sequel!

Habe mir The Land of Pain und The Alien Cube gekauft, weil mir die Demo zu Cosmic Fear sehr sehr gut gefallen hat und ich den Zusammenhang zwischen den drei Games verstehen möchte.
The Land of Pain hat mir echt gut gefallen.
Für ein Game das 2017 erschienen ist kann ich es nur empfehlen.
Setting passt. Grafik ist auch echt gut.
Freue mich auf die nächsten Stunden in The Alien Cube.

si estas acostumbrado a los juegos de terror que necesitan de screamers o te este persiguiendo constantemente un monstruo genérico para generarte alguna sensación, no juegues este titulo, te sera aburrido.
El juego, como lo dice su sinopsis es una historia lovecraftniana, entonces su disfrute esta más en su narrativa.
La cual si bien no es el mejor horror cósmico que hay, es bastante solida, considerando que fue hecha por 1 sola persona.
Hay que leer las notas para entender de que va, los cuales son cortos y de fácil lectura.
Si eres alguien que empieza en el mundo del horror cósmico o lovecraftniano, diria que este juego es un buen inicio, por su historia interesante y no tan compleja.

Well, its one of the fun horror games. Not the best nor the worst. OK! It is short, got it done in 3 days. Visuals are nice, the story is interesting, even if it does have some plot holes. The puzzles are relatively simple, the areas are large with a moderate amount to explore and usually some indication of where to go next. If you wander around long enough, you'll eventually realize where to go or what to do. I looked up a guide a few times and every time I did, it turned out to be something I would have discovered eventually if I kept at it. Sometimes the protagonist offers clues of what to do, and sometimes they don't. "I can use this chainsaw to cut the brambles" ... what brambles! (finds brambles for first time 15 minutes later)

I liked this one, there were a few spots that i had a hard time figuring out what to do though.
there was one spot in specific that wouldn't trigger an event, forcing a reload.
Other than that pretty solid game!

I played the Alien Cube too, And I honestly think this is the better game.

Too much back and forth walking, and not enough event triggers to justify it. It's the SH 2 intro walk into town on repeat, with rapidly declining graphical novelty and an increase in screen fog due to smoke demons.

The Land of pain started off kinda cool and i am sad at how quickly that wore off. There is a ton of backtracking to do, weird things to fetch in order to get stuff done and eventaully some sort of monster kept spawning (you can outrun it but it's so unnecessary).

The atmosphere in this game is really well done and i enjoyed it a lot but the monster didn't really add more horror for me and was more of an annoyance. I also had to look up a video guide because at some point i just didn't know where to go anymore and the hint wasn't helpful. After that i just kinda stopped playing and don't really know if i want to go back and finish the rest of the story.
