The enigma machine is something interesting, sure short on the gameplay side with some questionable choices but yet really good in the story and world building that the game/series is set in, you are basically doing a training program that teaches you how to decontaminate an AI with the dreamscape, I'm not gonna elaborate on any of that is because the story is short and in my opinion worth to experience on your own, the gameplay is going in this dreamscape and solve puzzles to find codes to progress the story, those levels are well done, with some interesting puzzle even tho not that challenging my only gripe is the gun, why it's not shooting like 90% of the time? Sure it makes stressful in some situations but there's not even an explanation on why those that and it's more annoying that stressful.
In the end the game is a short and interesting experience that I can recommend to anyone that love a good story with some light puzzles mixed in there.

Extremely cool game that I was only able to finish by sheer luck due to a glitch. As a heads up, there's an item you need for the last couple levels in the game and if you're running above a certain framerate or your monitor is set to 60hz or above it'll only function about thirty percent of the time. Which is a major issue but up to that point it's just a fantastic game, nothing else like it. It's doable with this glitch but it's very frustrating. I'm gonna recommend it because if you're smarter than me and can fiddle with these settings you'll just have a great game on your hands but please be aware of this issue before purchasing.

Good idea, poor execution. Although the story is cool, I can't recommend it. The story is an interesting look at AI sentience and I really liked the start. However, you have to make it run like trash for a key mechanic to work and at that point I couldn't complete the game because it resulted in a bunch of other issues. First game that I just decided to watch the end on YouTube. Hoped the second would be better, but instead of this series I wish I'd just bought something else tbh.

It's like an interactive short scifi story. The majority of the playtime is spent reading.

Worth a dollar on sale. Cool little brain teaser. Really short, though. If I wasn't the kind of person who needs to explore every nook and cranny, I could have done it in an hour and 10 minutes. Under an hour if I also didn't die 4 times at the end like a noob who's never played an FPS before. In some sections, the lighting sucks and caused me to wander around in a circle aimlessly for way too long. Given how narrow the corridors are, I really had no excuse. Better lighting probably still would have cut another 5-10 minutes off the playtime. Faster reading and skipping optional inquiries at the command prompt would have cut another 10 mins at the minimum.

If you've played through any Zachtronics games, The Talos Principle, or The Witness, these "puzzles" will be no problem at all. More difficult than Resident Evil "puzzles" but probably easier than Silent Hill "puzzles."

Very short, but incredibly effective storytelling, a bit reminescent of OBSERVER with the theme of exploring the mind of a dying consciousness, which is in itself an incredibly terrifying concept.

I was absolutely terrified in the last level, and yet I was even more scared when everything just.. stopped. Silence can be just as scary as loud noises, it turns out, and this game uses audio design very effectively.

Das spiel kam 3 Jahre vor MOTHERED raus, macht es aber einfach nochmal bei weitem besser, wenn man es nach MOTHERED spielt. Also bitte, kauft euch MOTHERED, spielt es und spielt danach das hier. Ohne MOTHERED gespielt zu haben, kann man das Spiel hier nicht wirklich voll bewerten, da es nicht wirklich lang und viel Story gibt, wenn man kein Vorwissen hat. Wenn man aber MOTHERED kennt und die Story versteht, ist das Spiel hier bei weitem besser.
Es ist wirklich krass, wie enorm gut das writing von ENIGMA STUDIOS ist, dass es Spiel, was 3 Jahre später rauskommt, von dem Vorgänger noch verständlicher gemacht wurde. Das ist einfach verrückt. I mean, denkt mal drüber nach. Ihr macht ein Spiel in 2018, macht eine Story, macht dann 2021 din Spiel. was dann von dem 3 Jahre alten Spiel euch noch mehr Lore gibt. Bitte nehmt euch genug Zeit, um ENIGMA MACHINE und MOTHERED zu genießen, auf alles zu achten, und zu appreciaten. Die Visuals und Sounds sind natürlich auch sehr gut in dem Spiel. Wie bei MOTHERED. Jeden einzelnen Cent wert.

The first game in the "Enigma" saga (followed by MOTHERED and ECHOSTASIS, as well as those games' demos, which carry integral elements of lore). Hard to even describe in a particular genre, but you "first-person horror narrative experience with light puzzles" is probably the closest I can get.

The focus is really more on the evolving narrative that runs throughout the whole series, in addition to the impeccable vibes. It's a short, tight, grimy, and at times viscerally unpleasant vaporwave nightmare with an eventually heart-wrenching little story thrown in if you keep up with the future games. Definitely unlike anything else out there and worth your time!

Got this after realizing MOTHERED was a sequel to this. Oops. This one unfortunately is incredibly clunky and I found it needlessly difficult to figure out what I was meant to be doing. The gun I assume you're supposed to use on the fragile doors just did not work on some of them for no apparent reason, so I was unable to progress until I just looked up the code I needed. After that the game becomes an absolute visual headache with textures stretching across the screen, loading in and out sporadically and it just became too much. I got to level 4 and had to call it quits partially out of frustration but also out of fear of getting a migraine. I liked the story of MOTHERED and was curious what background this game might provide but its a bit of a mess overall.

PLEASE NOTE IN CASE YOU RUN INTO THIS ISSUE: I encountered a glitch/bug/whatever that almost prevented me from finishing the game. The gun won't fire (or would sporadically) and dropping my refresh rate to 60hz did not fix it. What finally worked was playing the game in windowed mode (set this via the pop up window that appears prior to launching the game). Windowed mode + 60hz. Hope this helps!

A pretty cool hour-long experience, I'd say it's worth the price of admission if you grab it on sale for a buck, but I'll do you a solid and give you this before you start the game.

Right-click the game in your library -> Properties -> General -> In the "Launch Options" box, type/paste in "+fps_max 60" without the quotation marks. This is will allow you to navigate the game without the game-breaking bug that caused me to get stuck for about 10/15 minutes wandering slowly around.

This game is so bugged it's actually unplayable. And they are not intentional bugs either. Anything above 16:9 resolution, 60 Hz and 60 FPS apparently make this game impossible to play properly, let alone win. A real shame too as the idea seems solid, but this game is one that should be watched on youtube, that way you can get the story without having to deal with the incomprehensible levels of jank.

the Good:
Good Psychological Horror with a Sci-Fi setting. The setting hides the horror aspect of the game until the walls break down and the horror emerges. All three games are worth playing through and the prices are good but seem to increase with each chapter.
The Bad:
Lack of Achievements on Steam wouldn't be an issue if PSN Trophies and XBL Achievements were not available for this chapter of the game as well. It's aggravating to see they have the ability to add them but don't seem to care about the Steam playerbase as much as the console gamers.

This game is fantastic, and really thought-provoking. So why am I giving it a negative review? Because, like several others in the forums and reviews, I had a lot of my time wasted by a game-breaking bug that is basically invisible, yet fully hard-locks you from completing the game until you close the game, force the game to be set to 60 fps in Nvidia control panel, because the game doesn't have its own FPS cap, and then relaunch and get back to where you were. This is a really frustrating bug that has soured an otherwise great experience.

This is a short, brilliant, mind f#ck of a game. If you're looking for something different, The Enigma Machine delivers. It starts off quietly enough, but hoo-boy, by the time you hit level 4, the intensity is off the charts. I'm looking forward to diving into the developer's other titles now!

I am going to give this a thumbs up, really cool experience that is only 99 cents on sale at time of writing. That said, I found the visuals near the very end impossible to navigate which bummed me out.

Also I played this game on Steam Deck - it is definitely not intended for Steam Deck but totally viable with some key bind customization.

i really enjoy games of this nature - mostly point and click, with some danger thrown in for flavor. the art direction is beautiful (if slightly confusing; towards the end of the game i got hopelessly lost for awhile LOL). i loved the story - i think it's so interesting that despite this game being published prior to the genAI furor of the last few years, there was still some commentary that could be applied to our present as well.

Fantastic visual and audio design unfortunately hampered by underdeveloped puzzles with obtuse and frustrating solutions. The titular Enigma machine that speaks to you could use some work, I did not enjoy the writing enough to justify its impact on the pacing.

There are some redeeming qualities here, but at $5 you can find other short experiences that manage to accomplish far more for free.

A mixed experience! Be warned that one puzzle requires you to hear sound, it does not have captions for said sound. I was able to hear it, but did not understand what was said...

The game requires some patience on the player's side but also makes use of you staying longer in a place and getting to know it. Even running is not fast, and some areas are deliberately frustrating to navigate (I'm looking at you, pitch black staircase).

I really liked a lot of the visual presentation, though it can also get a bit exhausting after a while. I didn't like the inconsistency of the lights in the levels and found many areas to be too dark (which prevented me from finding one code fragment, the rest was mainly just inconvenient to frustrating). A later stage can even be a bit nauseating. I think gamedesign-wise it could have been a bit better in many areas but it does clever things as well, so I don't regret playing it.

The sound of the enemy dying was so nasty that it soured my otherwise (somewhat) positive experience. Do you want me to email you a screamer so that you can experience that "authentic indie slop horror experience" too? If you want to be experimental and cute with your sounds, go ahead, but if so, you need to make absolutely sure that your mastering is on point. These games make me paranoid that I've lost hearing every time. I can accept hearing loss if I get something sufficiently valuable in return. Either remove these annoying sounds, or make your game so good that I'll gladly tank screamer-tier earrape face first.

Overall, the ideas are not that interesting, to be honest. "Rogue AI" has always been a trope, even before 2023. What's the special spin on the trope here? Nothing. It's just lazy. You have to work on your ideas too, not just the game. "AI in a loop", "Suffering AI", "Evil corporation😈", you can probably already fill in the rest. It's really sickening to see this stuff every time when there's clear potential here in other respects.

The presentation is pretty good. The effects for the screen are nice. Missing a lot though. Big promises, small delivery. "THE ENIGMA MACHINE" is too grand of a name for something like this. Feels very much like a demo (which it very well might be, since apparently it's a trilogy).

Looking forward to see the other parts of the series. Clear (unrealized) artistic vision here.

I picked this game up because I wanted to get more into horror games. When this came up on my Steam Discovery Queue, I thought " for $5, why the hell not? ". What I ended up getting was a very immersive 80's crt computer horror movie experience that left a great impression on me. It is roughly a 2 hour experience based on how good you are at puzzles, but no matter how long you are in the game for you will want to know how it ends. You do have to do a bit of reading, but the writing is actually pretty good imo (once again for $5) and its not annoyingly lengthy. Without this game, it wouldn't have peaked my interest to see how the rest of the [HER] trilogy plays out. I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone ESPECIALLY if you're into AI horror [b] (NOT AI WRITTEN/GENERATED HORROR. I am referring to AI's that go rogue or turn on their masters to do nefarious things.) [/b]

Great style and execution. Short but sweet. Sometimes it seems like the lighting is kicking in which, combined with the art style, can make it feel impossible to navigate. Felt something similar at the end, perhaps more intentionally, but still had some issues just finishing the game. 100% looking forward to playing the next two in the trilogy.

That was sick. I really enjoyed the vibe of the game, especially that last level. I'm usually a real weenie when it comes to anything horror/thriller related, so this was just about perfect for my hairpin trigger sympathetic nervous system. Definitely would recommend!

THE ENIGMA MACHINE is an horror puzzle-based indie game about traversing through a machine's mind. It is as cheaps as it gets and creative as it gets. A great visual style and different lore makes you wish you played this before and will keep you playing its short playtime until finished. The puzzles are simple but creative enough to take a little bit of your time, and the horror, although expected, comes in smoothly and scarily. Made me scream.
Its a great short game from a studio that i hope to see more of, definitely recommended.

Ambiente muito escuro, mesmo com luz acesa, as texturas super esticadas e os glitch intencional que atrapalham sua visão.

Sei que foi tudo intencional, mas ao meu ver com menos poluição visual o jogo seria melhor.

Unique and fun concept, won't go into detail since it will take away from the experience.

If you're in for a short and sweet, thought-provoking little horror game, this might be it.

PSA: It's mandatory to play this game at 60FPS. So either, set your monitor to 60HZ in display settings or use a third party program to adjust the settings for you.

I did not experience any bugs or technical issues that the negative review suggest make the game unplayable.

I think The Enigma Machine is pretty interesting, but mostly middle of the road. I'll give it a thumbs up for the benefit of the doubt. Overall the visuals were cool, but a touch overdone in many cases - some rooms were completely pitch black, the pop in was disorienting, the distortions gave me a headache, etc. Largely this was fine, but it did make navigation and a few puzzles pretty confusing. I really like the visuals, but they aren't without their flaws. The audio is pretty hit or miss with most of the sounds being 'cool' but not very functional. The story was cool, but nothing particularly outstanding. There was one nice reveal around the halfway point, and I think that cool moment is really what pushed this into the positive for me.

A decent little indie game overall. Not really forth the $5, I don't think, so wait for a decent sale and your money will be well spent.

Communicating with [demOs] was both unsettling and fascinating at the same time. The world created by the developer with their trilogy has raised my standards for what I enjoy in games of this kind.
Entering the [DREAMSCAPE] with each level brought an ever-growing sense of dread and curiosity.
