Привет, любители необычных квестов и психоделики! Прошёл первые две главы The Dream Machine — point‑and‑click‑приключения в уникальной эстетике пластилиновой анимации. Игра напоминает сон: странный, запоминающийся и немного тревожный.
Суть: вы играете за Виктора, обычного человека, который обнаруживает устройство, позволяющее проникать в сны других людей. С его помощью герой пытается разобраться в загадочных событиях и тёмных уголках чужого подсознания.
Что понравилось (и заставило сказать «Что я только что увидел?!»):
Визуальный стиль. Вся игра сделана в технике пластилиновой анимации — это выглядит необычно и сразу выделяет проект среди других квестов. Каждый кадр хочется рассмотреть детально: текстуры, фактуры, мелкие детали окружения.
Атмосфера сновидений. Мир снов хаотичен, иррационален и полон символов. Комнаты меняются местами, предметы ведут себя странно, а логика уступает место ассоциациям. Ощущение, будто действительно погружаешься в чужой сон.
Головоломки. Задачи органично вписаны в окружение: нужно не просто «подобрать ключ», а понять логику сна. Например, чтобы открыть дверь, может понадобиться найти её отражение в зеркале или изменить восприятие пространства.
Звуковое сопровождение. Саундтрек и звуковые эффекты усиливают сюрреалистичное настроение: шёпоты, скрипы, далёкие голоса, тревожные мелодии. Наушники обязательны!
Сюжет и тайны. История подаётся без прямых объяснений — через намёки, записки, обрывки диалогов и визуальные метафоры. Хочется исследовать каждый уголок, чтобы собрать пазл воедино.
Персонажи. Даже второстепенные герои запоминаются: их дизайн, поведение и реплики добавляют глубины миру. Каждый сон — это маленькая история с подтекстом.
Плавный переход между главами. Первая и вторая главы связаны общей линией, но каждая предлагает новый сеттинг и настроение. Переход ощущается естественным, а не как «новая игра».
С чем пришлось столкнуться (и сказать «Ну и как это решить?!»):
Сложность головоломок. Некоторые задачи требуют нестандартного мышления или долгих проб и ошибок. Пару раз я застревал на одном месте на 20–30 минут, пытаясь понять логику сна.
Ограниченная интерактивность. Не все объекты в кадре можно осмотреть или использовать. Иногда сложно понять, что важно для прогресса, а что — просто часть декора.
Темп повествования. Игра не торопится раскрывать карты: первые полчаса могут показаться медленными. Нужно настроиться на неспешное исследование.
Отсутствие подсказок. Нет системы подсказок или журнала задач — всё нужно запоминать или записывать самому. Для кого‑то это плюс, для кого‑то — минус.
Монохромные участки. В некоторых снах цветовая палитра ограничена (чёрно‑белое, сепия), что визуально утомляет через время. Хотя это часть художественной задумки.
Короткая продолжительность глав. Каждая глава проходится за 2–3 часа. Для полного погружения хочется больше эпизодов подряд.
Итог: The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2 — это:

P.S. После финала я ещё раз прошёл пару локаций, чтобы найти скрытые детали и понять, какие намёки были в первой главе для второй.
Weird little twisted arts and crafts game. I think you need to be a certain type of person to play games like this well. It was really frustrating at times and required a guide. The story is bizarre and some of the imagery is shocking but very dark and creative. The end of Chapter 5 and the beginning of Chapter 6 was consistently crashing for a while but I got past it by lowering my screen resolution which made it hard to read some of the tiny text.

Игра регулярно вылетает, сохранения слетают, ачивки, вроде как, тоже только на определенной версии выбиваются.
Ну и плюс от меня лично, я понимаю что сюжет ХОТЕЛ сказать и показать, но как будто бы, по итогу, рассказывает историю диаметрально противоположную и… не совсем имеющую смысла если ты хотя бы на пару секунд в концовке (и не только) включаешь мозг. Честно, ко многим другим элементам сюжета и персонажам у меня гигантские вопросы, но это пришлось бы вкидывать спойлеры. Последние главы тоже капитально душные, а предпоследняя так и вовсе ощущается как огромный филлер что вообще ситуации не помогает.
У игры есть очень сильные моменты и аспекты, но вот как-то ни туда, ни сюда. Может в расширенной версии исправят (обещают еще концовки и наконец починить баги).
О, The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2 — это когда ты просыпаешься в кошмаре, но вместо крика "мама!" тебе говорят: "добро пожаловать в handmade-ад".
Ты ходишь по картонным комнатам, которые выглядят так, будто их склеил пьяный папа Карло.
Графика — стоп-моушн из картона, бумаги и слёз, но такая жуткая, что хочется обнять маму и больше не играть.
Звук? Шаги — как будто кто-то ходит по твоему черепу, а музыка — это "тише-тише, сейчас тебя съедят".
Сюжет? "Ты — в чужом сне, и он не твой". Глубоко, ♥♥♥♥♥.
Итог: 8/10. Если хочешь почувствовать себя куклой в руках маньяка — это твой билет. Только не засыпай после.
I played this game for the first time 10 years ago. Back then I got distracted and never finished it, which is the fate of many games in my library. But what prevented The Dream Machine from being one of those games which I never pick up again, was the atmosphere. The writing and the visuals mix in this perfectly weird, humorous and profound way that really stuck with me, and made me remember this game from time to time long after I stopped playing. And now in 2026 I decided to finally start it over again, and this time fully finish it.
The first 4 chapters are excellent. I think they perfectly balance the puzzle elements with the storytelling. I never felt fully clueless as to where the game wanted me to head next. I got this "sense of wonder" from exploring the world and getting to know the characters with their (often deeply relatable) struggles.
Starting from the 5th chapter the scope of the world starts becoming bigger and more complex, which makes it much harder to navigate, since you're presented with so many possible directions without much cues. While this could be argued to just be a case of increasing difficulty, I feel the game could have done a better job directing the player's attention to the right details (which I think can be done without sacrificing the puzzle difficulty).
Also, I too did suffer from the crashes many others have pointed out, but that's the unfortunate downside of playing a game created in flash in 2026.
Still, even with those downsides, I am very happy I stayed until the very end this time. You really get the sense that this game was a passion project for the devs and the attention to detail on every level of the storytelling (visual, writing, music...) is deeply inspiring.
Maybe in another 10 years I'll find myself playing it once again.
this game is important to me in a number of ways. for one, I often think of its setting and its visuals, in particular, when I'm very drunk and trying to fall asleep. my bed is like Victor's dreamspace, and his dreamspace anchors my bed. thanks.

I wasn't expeting much when I first bought this game but it ended up being a very good and enjoyable adventure.
The aesthetic of the game, all made with these clay figures and the music set an incredibly unique and overwhelming tone for the game. At first it seems like a very chill game starting in that island, but it slowly becomes more and more creepy as it progresses, but never to the point where you'd really call it a horror game or anything, just the right amount to set the right atmosphere.
It's really interesting going from dream to dream, seeing the personalities of each character manifest like that. Victor's dream showing his fear and insecurities and just wanting to stay on an island alone, and at the same time Legion manifesting that in its own way sets a great personality for the character.
There was a couple of puzzles I needed a guide for, but other than that the game is usually smooth sailing. At least until chapter 6, where things become much much weirder.

The game i have played over 10 years ago has finally led to my Ego death in 2026. I can hear "Victor" in my own dreams. This isn't a game. It's a psychology test. I finally became like the dreamer.
I’m impressed with the hand animated stop motion figures. I was disappointed to learn the rest of the story is DLC, but I enjoyed this enough to grab them while on sale. The clay animation and handcrafted set gives the game a neat style and identity. It’s a point and click adventure with a Psychonauts-ish dream delving mechanic that stays unsettling without going into outright horror. You play as Victor Neff exploring strange dream spaces tied to people’s minds. Puzzles are challenging and logical without being a complete guessing game.
The writing is the weak point. A lot of the dialogue feels like filler. Not the usual point and click object descriptions, but long winded dialogue that doesn’t help the puzzle or move the story forward. Misclicking and rereading long sections gets irritating fast. Not sure if it's intentional, but the eyeless characters add to the unease, and the lack of constant background music makes parts feel unfinished.
This game is amazing, the puzzles are fun to solve and the storyline is easy to follow. I used to play this with my dad when I was 7, I remember always being so excited for each new chapter to release. This game has stuck with me as a fond memory and I love replaying it.
So I highly recommend this game!

The Dream Machine is such an incredibly unique game. I find the storyline intriguing yet unsettling. The animation is really cool and it's obvious that a lot of love and passion went into this.

As always, any game with a "unique visual style" gets bombed with 5 star reviews from people who think that's the greatest thing ever.
This game is no different. Is it good though? No, it is not.
Let's start with the "unique visual style". Yeah, it's quite nice. No, it adds absolutely nothing to the game. The odd appearance of the characters and environments is not a part of the story, it is simply there for its own sake.
Gameplay wise, this thing is mediocre. After a promising start in Chapters 1 & 2, you find yourself entangled in a banal and dull story set on a ship. Here, you mix drinks, run tedious errands and have endless dialogue exchanges. The worst point and click clichéd nonsense.
After this, we go to Edie's dream, which is marginally more interesting, but still pretty bland. It has a cosmic setting, but it doesn't amount to more than background wallpaper whilst endlessly walking between rooms.
The next level is a weird Tron-like world. Again, this does not invoke any kind of dream-like state, it's simply bland and empty. It is here that the most unforgiveable error occurs: You cannot finish this level without leaving and doing something outside in the real world. But the game does not tell you that.
I bashed every item together and visited every room 20 times before relenting and reading a guide to get the bad news.
It was at this point I decided not to waste anymore time and uninstalled.
There are a few other critical gameplay flaws in the game where clickable areas are practically invisible and can take hours of your time until you notice them under a microscope. Other times, your character will refuse to perform simple tasks, such as opening an unlocked door because it might upset someone. Dude, just open the ***ing door already.
Sometimes story beats are twice as long as they need to be, as was the case where after finding an ID card, you then need to waste time gluing your own face onto it from a book you picked up hours ago. When the player is keen to see the next dream, this busywork only frustrates progress.
Other times actions are entirely redundant. After finding a master key, you discover most doors reveal nothing or your guy STILL won't go through them, forcing you to find ANOTHER solution.
All of this adds up to a lot of time spent wheel-spinning and what feels like padding a short and undercooked game.

The Dream Machine is one of the most memorable point-and-click adventures I’ve played. Each episode has its own logic and atmosphere, and the handcrafted stop-motion world gives the game a tone that’s both charming and unsettling. The story begins light and quirky, but gradually becomes serious and surprisingly emotional.
The final episode leans heavily on dialogue and non-interactive content, which slowed the pacing for me, but the overall journey is worth it. A unique and human game — imperfect, ambitious and deeply imaginative.

I got this game with chapters 1 and 2 for free, and the game has 6 chapters, but this review is only for chapters 1 and 2. The Dream Machine is a Swedish point-and-click game about dreamlike places. The first two chapters start with a sense of mystery, and each part adds new details that make the world feel unusual. The handmade style gives the story a clear look and atmosphere.
Each chapter has its own mood, and some parts are darker but not scary. The second chapter goes back to a few earlier places, but it also adds new areas that make it feel different. The style and tone stay the same throughout both chapters.
The second chapter ends in a calm way that fits the story. These first two chapters tell a clear and interesting part of the story and give an idea of what the developers might continue in later chapters.
It has become one of my favourite games. I've played it twice to complete all of the achievements and it's been great to discover even more on the second run, that aside from the style being so unique and the story... Such a great game!
The Dream Machine is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played. Even though I finished it a year ago, its images continue to linger in my mind, transforming into ideas that inspire my own work as an artist. From the very first moment you enter its handcrafted surreal worlds, the sense of being in a dream becomes immersive. The characters dreams are not merely decorative scenes, they are psychoanalytic landscapes revealing the deepest aspects of their soul.
In my opinion, the Dream Machine is a very philosophical and existential game. Humans desire to control dreams through a machine, to understand and manipulate the chaotic mind. Yet the more they try, the more the line between reality and fantasy/dream blurs. The protagonist and through him, the player asks: "Could my life be someone else's dream?" or big philosophical questions like "How can we know that we truly exist?". I interpret the game's ending as a kind of acceptance of the existential unknown and uncertainty.
Its only potential flaw might be the lack of clear guidance for solving the puzzles sometimes, which can be frustrating. Yet, even this challenge feels fitting within the game .
Visually this game is gorgeous. It has character, detail, and personality whilst being very high quality. The story is also engaging, intriguing, and even becoming kind of ethereal in some moments. The puzzles are comprehensible and sensible; the solution is normally something you can make sense of, and if you are stuck, dialogues with the right characters help a little bit to progress.
Now, this all seems dandy, but the game has bigs issues that need to be addressed. The FPS drops make progress unbearable, and combining them with unexpected crashes followed by no state saving leads the player to repeat the same tedious dialog options and interactions that take minutes and should take seconds multiple times.
When you are stuck on a part and are looking for the solutions, the direct approach is to talk to the NPCs and look for hints, but when entering dialog, the game forces you to go through multiple options when you only want one piece of information. Also, you can't just exit dialog; even if you started it by mistake, you have to go through some options, and then you can exit. The game should enable the player to exit at any time.
Also, the price tag is not justifiable. If you can run the game smoothly on your PC, getting this game on a big discount is ok, but outside of that, it's not worth it.
I was looking forward to this game; the art style really impacts you and makes you want to explore every screen, but the bad implementation of the game design and the technical issues lead me to abandon the game midway through.
The story is actually pretty good and the art and atmosphere are original and work well, if you're ready to ignore the clunkyness of an obsolete game engine.

Es un buen juego y, siendo un indie, se valora aún más el esfuerzo. Aunque con DLCs, tiene una extensión buena, buen desarrollo y, la estética, aunque de primeras puede echar para atrás, te acabas acostumbrando y siendo señal de identidad (además de cuadrar con la historia). La parte de puzzles no es la gran cosa, aunque puede que te atasques en alguna parte no tan clara.
Hay muuuchas líneas y horas de diálogo y que no se pueda hacer skip al diálogo entero (sólo por línea) si ya los has leído, a veces se hace algo tedioso. Pero se agradece que se suela marcar lo ya leído.
Hay unos cuantos bugs que te dejarán el juego KO cada tanto, por lo que recomiendo guardar a menudo en cada capítulo. Así también te servirá para lograr los logros (que recomiendo sacar después de cada capítulo ya que sino, irás justo de espacios de guardado o te tocará rejugar mucho para sacarlos). Éstos, por cierto, están desactivados por defecto en Steam, pero el propio creador ha dicho cómo activarlos y sacarlos si ya los has sacado in-game (que sí que funcionan).
Y, por lo demás, buen formato de juego y de inventario, algo limitado en cuanto a tema combinaciones de inventario o interactuación con cosas en la pantalla y buen apartado sonoro.
Lo que me ha rayado más es que, si bien el juego comienza intenso y engancha, creo que en los últimos capítulos, es una buena pirada de pinza que lo convierte en un juego no para todo el mundo. Acaba siendo bastante surrealista y, al menos para mí, se carga un poco la experiencia. Es coherente con el resto del juego, pero demasiado retorcido. También se echa en falta que no lo hayan traducido al español (pero sí traducciones a idiomas menos "comunes"), ya que aunque el juego se entiende bastante bien (a excepción de algunos términos más específicos), habiendo tanto, tanto texto, a veces se hace algo cansado.
I was having a good time until chapter 6 when two things started happening: white screens of death (very scary for me on my Linux laptop, my being a newbie at Linux and constantly afraid of killing my computer) and just... an aimlessness, a complete slowing of momentum. The outlook for the ending seems depressing anyway and I'm just not having fun anymore. Hate to leave something unfinished - I'd soldier on if it wasn't for the crashes. I really love the outsider art feel of the designs, and have enjoyed the characters' personalities, as well as the overarching mechanic of the game. It's just bringing me down in this final chapter and it's dark and it's September and I can't really deal right now, to be honest! Sorry, game.

This was the most memorable point-n-click adventure I've ever played. The story. The ambience. The ANALOGUE AESTHETIC.
Part of me wish to forget what I played so I can do it again.
Better played with a friend so 2 heads can think faster on the puzzles solutions.
I take pride in having checked the solution of a puzzle only 1 time, but I know that's a silly pride; there's no fun in being frustrated.
If you dream it, they will build it.

Niestety niektóre zagadki są na prawdę trudne i nielogiczne - spotkałam już kilka momentów, gdzie utknęłam i musiałam szukać solucji, a nie jestem nowicjuszem w tego gatunku grach.
Edit 10/08/2025: spędziłam kilka kolejnych godzin nad grą i muszę zmienić recenzję na negatywną. Pierwszy rozdział był ok, drugi jeszcze całkiem spoko, ale od 3 to zaczyna się już hardkor z bezsensownymi zagadkami/zadaniami. Gra mnie na tym etapie frustruje na tyle, że nie mam ochoty grać dalej i w sumie żałuję kupna wszystkich rozdziałów jednocześnie.

I really enjoyed this game and it's a personal favorite of mine! If you're a fan of sci-fi, especially related to things like dreams and psychology, alternate worlds, and strange technology, I would recommend it. The story is also compelling, showcasing through the protagonist the complicated feelings of starting a new phase of life as a parent. And it's clearly a passion project, with all of the hand-crafted environments and the weird and unique scenarios present across each chapter, which is cool to experience and support in indie games.
For some things that may put people off:
The puzzles can be a bit confusing at times, I didn't mind using a guide when needed but it does make later chapters harder to replay and I could see this being more frustrating to some players. Some people have performance issues - I didn't on my first playthrough, but on some replays Chapter 6 would crash a few times near the start. Also, later chapters can get weirder or a bit uncomfortable for some people, but I feel like it adds to the general strange atmosphere and absurdity of the dream world.
Overall it's a very underrated game though and I hope more people check it out! Or check out the definitive edition when that releases with added content/performance fixes!
I love the look of the clay animation and the interactive story pulls you in to uncover more of the mystery.
被美术风格吸引，也玩了不少解密游戏，到现在感觉不是很难，而且谜题设置确实很有合理性，舒服，就是比较依赖文本，英文读的还是有点累。
来写评测主要是为了反映一个问题，我的存档总是会丢失，是存档列表整整齐齐显示empty的那种丢失。
好在能自选章节，但有时候一章中途退了的话，就要堵上概率了。
希望有更多人能发现这个可爱的游戏呀。

Elég instabil a játék, gyakran lefagy így gyakran kell menteni! Az FPS is lecsökken akár 1 fps-ig, és aztán lehet le is fagy, ilyenkor már menteni se tudsz, szóval ments gyakran!
A játék rövid, szürreális, point and clock kaland játék. Az első kettő fejezet ingyenes, így csak erről a kettőről tudok beszélni.
Nincs pixel vadászat, az interaktálható elemeket ki lehet emelni a játéktérből, ezt mindig szeretem pozitívumként megjegyezni.
A rejtvények kellően nehezek, de nem olyan hogy kitéped a hajad, bár a kőfejekkel azért meggyűlt a bajom.
A hangok jók, a látvány: értem, hogy az egész játék agyagból és papírból van és így van meganimálva, funkcionális, de fura! Lehet ha teljesen végigjátszanám akkor megszoknám.
A műfaj kedvelőinek tudom ajánlani, de csak leárazva és az egész játékot DLC-kel együtt megvéve!
why the previous gameplay years before on youtube is different than the now? and my achievements isnt progressing at all...its still at 0 percent even tho I already ended chapter 5... the game and story is decent but theres some lags and crashes .. im not really running on potato pc...

This game is simply GREAT!
It offers:
* Increasingly challenging but not unfair/illogical puzzles.
* An emotionally engaging story that's never cliché.
* A unique art style that's a treat to look at.
Seriously, give it a try.
I'm still on the fence about the ending but the road there is one helluva emotional rollercoster, A BLAST even.
I'm currently on my 2nd replay and I realized how much this game makes me feel things (especially now that I know how the story ends and can pick up on pieces of foreshadowing).
Emotionally, I consider it on par with the game "Disco Elysium", the show "BoJack Horseman" and the beginning of the movie "Up!" (especially further into the game), as all of these focus on a lot on the sad realities of life.
If you enjoy the wonderful art, music and general vibes of Amanita Studios' games, or the old claymation classic Neverhood, you'll feel right at home here (though it's less whimsical, has actual dialogue and a progressively darker tone).
There are lots of minor characters which whom you only spend a brief time, yet get to know them and form some form of relationship with them.
There's one whose backstory is mostly implied but really heart-breaking once you connect the dots (which you will, once you start speaking to a sentient object).
Another character seems scary and malicious at first but actually helps you and when they return later, you realize how glad you are to see them. (Which, for me, evokes comic-book writer Grant Morrisson's tendency to have his heroes fight a non-human monstrosity, only to end up making friends with an even more alien entity because different doesn't equal bad and friendship = good.)
Regardless of whether you're a fan of adventure games or not, please give this one a try!
(And no, regardless of what some reviews claim, the story does NOT require you to abort a fetus. You could actually choose to deliver a baby.)
And oh yeah, they're apparently making an indie movie adaption so go play it before the movie comes out.
Overall, the puzzle are very good. But, too much dialogues and waiting time. Flash Game optimization are too bad and too laggy to be played on steam.
Still playing it. It runs with no lag. The characters are likeable. A relaxing game.

The Dream Machine is a very bizarre point-and-click adventure, and i mean that in the best way possible. Did I understand it the entire time? No, I did not. Was I able to solve every puzzle without looking at a guide? No, I did not (some of the puzzles are really confusing). But even with all of this, it is definitely worth it in the end. It can be sort of slow at times and there is a lot of dialogue, but it always finds a way to keep you engaged in the story and mechanics.
I highly recommend playing this hidden gem on Steam, even if it is solely for the story and animation. I will also be keeping an eye out for the movie that is supposed to be coming out and I think you should too.

Conclusión: bastante mediocre para un juego con 90 % de reseñas positivas. Se regaló (aunque sigue a la venta) hace años, pero solo incluye los 2 primeros capítulos. Del tercero al sexto hay que pagarlos por separado mediante DLCs, lo cual implica un excesivo coste para un título que ni gratis apetece disfrutar. Encima la mayoría de logros dependen de esos DLC de pago.
Si a alguien de verdad le interesa el significado de los sueños, es preferible que lea libros sobre el tema.
Phenomenal point and click puzzle game. Story is captivating and the dreams are absolutely wild. Overall a fun playthrough
Very interesting aesthetic. The story is pretty great, weird, depressing at times, hopeful. The interactions/dialogue is surreal, witty, and entertaining. The puzzles are on the whole not incredibly difficult, nor is there too many of them. It balances puzzle clicker with story I would say. I had to look at a guide for two parts, and only on one occasion did I think the puzzle was unfair (had to find a very small object on screen with no real other hints/clues leading you to it).
The story didn't feel rushed, it felt well paced, and as you can see by my playtime it isn't terribly long.
Now, it does and did crash A LOT, for me, and it kind of stutters (if you click multiple times in a row I think the logic/AI has to recalculate a lot) part of the stutter is from the claymation, but it can seem a little too jittery at times. Thankfully the autosave is pretty good, and not too many parts are a pain to redo.
It is 100% worth it on sale, or less than $30.

This is a hidden gem in the point and click genre. I almost missed this game originally because of the unassuming promotional art. It is one of the most unique point and click I've ever played: the main selling point of this game are the unique environment and the clay art style. If you aren't a fan of it, this is not a game for you. The story is also amazing, you can tell they didn't skimp out on ideas for this game and really used the environment and art to their advantage to tell it.
My only complaint about the game is that sometimes there are some things that weren't intuitive for me that I had to use a guide for, but it wasn't a large amount by any means. It's mostly when visual and narrative queues were missing to add some level of mystery, which really only happened in one dream/area of the game. I also liked the puzzles and how they weren't a multiple choice guessing game unlike some games of the genre. They didn't feel too out of place with the environment and goals that the player already had in front of them.
If you like puzzles and mystery, buy this game! It's a point and click with built by hand with actual materials, like claymation.

The game is very good, the story is very good, the artstyle is very good, the puzzles are very good
But unfortunatly, I have encountered numerous bugs and crashes. And it also starts lagging quite alot, very often. And now for some reason when I try to examine something, it just says "undefined" twice...
The last crash blinded me with a huge white screen and an exclamation point in the middle, which is just scary :(
And also the achievments aren't working (this is less important but still annoying)

This game looks fantastic, has great music, and even has interesting characters and story.. The puzzles are absolutely terrible, though. They are so vague that they're just not fun. I made it through the first dream sequence with stone heads, and without spoiling it, the final hint was ridiculous, and it ended up being totally random to go through the portals without trying one sequence first, then another. Just dumb. I decided it wasn't worth my time being frustrated.
Lags. FPS drops. Full on crashes due to memoery errors. When errors and crashes occur, the game makes reference to problems with Adobe Flash - possibly the source of all the issues? Anyway....
The art and vibe of this game are wonderful. The story is interesting and fairly well written. The puzzles are often a touch obtuse and there's no help; precious few reminders in the form of conversations or notes or anything to guide you down the right path. This is fine most of the time, but for the really obscure puzzles, it's just a waste of time. Chapter 5 in particular has such an absurd number of screens that when you don't know where you're going or what you're doing, you waste HOURS traversing - and there's no double-click-to-exit-screen functionality. The text also features a short delay when appearing on screen - this means you can't rapidly exit dialogue you've already seen if you retrigger it, and will spend ages having to sloooooooowly click through it all again.
I wanted to love this game but there's too many obstacles. Artistically it's an absolute triumph, but the extreme slowdown that comes jointly from the games technical issues and the bad implementation of point-n-click philosophy means I can't recommend it.

as a point and click game, it is definitely immersive, although the length of the chapters are not equal. the experience devolves into frustration when you are forced to make leaps in logic because it is a dreamscape where anything can happen. and it frequently crashes. Last chapter is a monologue, and the long cut scenes are boring. played it, but i wouldnt recommend it unless you like artistic interpretations of childhood trauma.

If we're being honest here, I don't always finish the games I review. Sometimes it's because they're too awful, sometimes because I know how I feel about them early on, and sometimes because they're just not for me. But I made a point to finish The Dream Machine and I'm very glad I did, because what happens in that final chapter feels like the real game, with everything that leads up to it a long prelude in retrospect. That's not speaking ill of the early chapters, mind you, that's giving the impressive final act the recognition it deserves.
Victor Neff has moved into a small apartment building with his pregnant wife Alicia. They're trying to prepare for their new arrival, but a chance discovery by Victor reveals a dark plot lurking within their home. The titular dream machine holds the power to invade dreams to nefarious ends, and Victor gets wrapped up in a struggle against it that has greater stakes than anyone could imagine. What starts as a quest to rescue his neighbors becomes a battle for life and understanding of the secrets of existence.
The stakes are sky high here, which makes the decision to portray them in clay and craftwork all the more remarkable. The Dream Machine does a pretty good job of hiding what its characters and backdrops are crafted from but this comes at a cost, usually with a lack of detail or animation to cover for the shortcomings of budget stop-motion animation. Don't expect a lot of expressive movement or dense scenes to explore, but expect plenty of atmosphere from everything you encounter. Even pleasant scenes are given a sinister, off-putting feel by the black-eyed stares of people and waxy sheen on common objects. And you'd better believe this aesthetic is used to full effect when needed.
It's the tone of The Dream Machine that's most noticeable about it, starting off rather innocuously with breakfast and chores, and then dropping hints at darker things and strange plots. By the time you're dream-hopping through unfamiliar landscapes the atmosphere has turned plenty creepy, and this unease ramps up exponentially to the conclusion. Throughout it all the characters involved will take the incredible events unfolding around them in stride, adding to the appropriately dreamlike feel of the whole affair. This mastery of tone is what keeps the game deeply affecting even when wrestling with puzzles or wandering about wondering what to do next.
As expertly as the dream motifs are used here though, you won't need to worry about any loopy dream logic to the puzzles. You'll find a fair number of items as you point-and-click your way through your quest but most have perfectly reasonable uses. The hardest threads to follow are when characters ask you favors or instruct you to handle something, because the solution usually involves some improvisation outside of the expected solution. I got stuck on a few puzzles for awhile, such as trying to find a substitute for tomato juice for a drink and locating bait for a fishing rod I didn't realize I needed. You may very well need to consult a walkthrough from time to time, because while the puzzles make sense they don't always make it clear how to do what you realize you need to do.
That would normally be a knock against an adventure game but the puzzles in The Dream Machine are extremely clever, and sometimes the difficulty comes from how clever they are. You'll come across a few gimmicks that are used to incredible effect, like one where you can rearrange rooms in a house and another where you can shrink or grow yourself. It's entirely possible you've seen these in other games but I promise you they weren't used as well as they are here. That uniqueness makes them harder to solve but seeing where the puzzle and associated plot go are more than worth the hassle.
Now, the plot is probably the strangest part of this game, and also what makes it so brilliant in the end. I gave you the opener up above, and it should be no surprise that this hook leads you to explore the dreams of the building's other residences. In general the chapters of the game are divided by dream, with each resident having a different theme to their dream realm. That means most of the game is occupied with working through the puzzles of a realm until you reach the goal and somehow free something up in the real world to allow access to the next. There's a clear progression here that feels like a proper quest, with little to distract from going through the motions.
All that changes in the final chapter. Suddenly the game takes a sharp philosophical and metaphysical turn, ejecting the clear reality/dream divide and dredging up a whole mess of pathos for your avatar Victor. It was off-putting at first, and not in the appropriate way that the art style is. I wondered if the final chapter had even been made by the same people, the gulf was so great. But then the puzzles started back up, even more involved and clever than before, sending me through colorful new areas and revisiting old ones. It built to a conclusion kicked off by a shockingly unpleasant scene, one that can hardly be called a happy ending but is maybe as perfect for the game as is possible. A lot of symbolism and subtext I hadn't really noticed before came to light and I started to reconsider how I felt about the game as a whole. As in, I started to wonder if I loved it instead of just liked it.
It's a lengthy journey of ten to twelve hours, and not all of that is going to be smooth sailing. You might have trouble connecting to the strangely alien characters at first, or you might get stuck on one of more involved puzzles each dream tends to have. But the foundations are solid and the atmosphere is great, and I assure you it all builds to something that's worth experiencing if you have the stomach for it. Fans of games that challenge them on many levels will find their match here, between the clever puzzles and the volatile story. I didn't think I was one of those fans, but as it turns out, The Dream Machine showed me a great many things I did not expect.

While the story starts off engaging, the mechanics are finicky to say the least. There are instances of great frustration and by the "conclusion" of things, you feel jaded by both the story and the mechanics.
If you're someone who doesn't mind clicking through hours of dialogue and flavor text that doesn't really help world build, perhaps this game is more suited for you than it is for me.
All around while the style was refreshing, the game experience was not easy to enjoy.

Всё это дело будет приправлено потрясающими диалогами, которые не дадут заскучать и удержат в мыслительном тонусе. А пока вы будете всё это дело смаковать, на заднем плане будет играть меланхоличная музыка, погружающая в рукотворные декорации из пластилина и картона, будто в мир сновидений.
На современных компьютерах возникают проблемы с производительностью, поскольку игра работает во флеше, который уже 5 лет в обед как не поддерживается. Поэтому либо ждите ремастер, либо придумывайте как заставить игру работать лучше. Лично мне помогло уменьшить герцовку монитора и регулярно перезапускать игру.
Тот момент, когда хотел поиграть в пластилиновый квест, а открыл для себя постмодернистское приключение на чертогах разума. This is Cinema 🙌 10/10
This game can't have a stable framerate to save its life. Goes from 24 to 135 to 4 in seconds. So I can't recommend this. It's a shame too, the game seems interesting. I'll look into their other games to see if the performance is better.
This game is a beautiful, classic style, point and click adventure. From the handmade sets to the engaging and thought provoking story, this is a must-play for adventure puzzler fans.
I've owned this game for a while since it was in episodic release, and I've restarted it several times with only partial completions. I've finally completed it thanks to the convenience of the Steam Deck. The pace of this game works well with a handheld platform.
If you are reading this wondering how the degraded rating for Steam Deck compatibility really affects this title, know that it really plays just fine. The on-screen keyboard is only used to name your savegames. I think it shoud have a Great On Deck "Approved" rating

The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2
ist auf jedenfall ein eher ungewöhnliches Point&Click Adventure aber sehr intuitiv. Der Artstyle ist besonders, uncanny und leicht gruselig, was dem ganzen eine gewisse Mysteriöse Atmosphäre gibt. Sehr cool, dass es wirklich plastische Figuren sind die durch stop Motion animiert wurden. Der Soundtrack bzw. die Ambience Music ist auch nicht schlecht, auch wenn es bei uns zwischendurch das Problem gab, dass wir neustarten mussten, weil der Sound auf einmal komplett weg war.
Interessant und ich denke zum reinschnuppern vielleicht ganz cool - ich persönlich kenne bereits viel von der Geschichte und habe bis etwa Kapitel 4 gespielt, was damals das zuletzt veröffentlichte Kapitel war.
Zugegebenermaßen weiß man aber in der ersten halben Stunde nicht so recht, was das Spiel von einem möchte und es wirkt alles sehr befremdlicht.
Die Rätsel sind allerdings wirklich gut!
Ein weiter Pluspunkt ist, dass man mit nur 4€ bereits in die Geschichte reinschnuppern und je nach Gusto weitere Kapitel hinzubuchen kann.

what a creepy creative game.
The claymation and art style are both wonderful throughout the game, with some beautiful scenery and haunting figures. BUT I will not recommend this game to anyone. During Chapter 5 the puzzles got increasingly long and frustrating -- and I'm not sure but I think Chapter 5 has more puzzles than Chapters 1 through 4 combined. Then there is the ending which, for a very interesting game concept about a dreamscape, was very disturbing to play through.

There’s so much to say about the experience that this game gave me.
If you love surrealist science fiction, this game is right up your alley. The story and gameplay revolve around entering dreams and solving puzzles, so it reminds me quite a bit of the movie Inception, but the similarities pretty much end there. This game has its own unique twist on the “entering dreams” trope.
Point-and-click games are known for having difficult puzzles that you can only solve if you click on an obscure piece of the screen. This can be frustrating. However, in this game, not only puzzles are not too difficult, but also there are accessibility modifiers that you can turn on that will give you extra hints or highlight clickable objects. I appreciated these options a lot when I got stuck at certain parts.
The claymation animation style is just an absolute treat visually. Like Neverhood, Armikrog, and Harold Halibut, it gives the game such a visually distinct aesthetic that I know that a lot of passion and hard work from the developers was put into this game. I commend them for this.
The character and dialogue writing is some of the best I’ve experienced in media. Even though dialogue in this game is conveyed through simple text on screen, everything that is said feels very real and purposeful, like if these characters existed in real life, I would believe they are real people instead of NPCs. For example, when the main character is conversing with his significant other, they have conversations and responses that a real couple would have. It connected me to the characters in a way I didn’t think was possible in a simple point-and-click game with no voice acting. I’ve played plenty of AAA games with voice acting where the dialogue seems so forced and only existing for plot advancement. Not in this game.
Fair warning that there are some gorey scenes, but they are few and far between. The writing at times is also very heavy, so be prepared.
This game is also really buggy. The game crashed many times and I softlocked myself from progressing a few times, but nothing that reloading the auto save couldn’t fix.
Overall, phenomenal story, satisfying puzzles, and great visuals.
100% Achievement Completion Perspective:
There are a lot of hidden achievements that can only be obtained by doing something specific or picking certain dialogue. You can’t get all achievements on a single playthrough, but you can replay individual chapters easily, though some are longer than others. There is one that if you don’t get in your first playthrough, you’ll have to play through the entire game again. However, going after most achievements nets you some unique dialogue and fun story moments, so it was fun 100%ing this game regardless.

Бескорыстная и безусловная, но когда тебе кидают косточку на веревке и ожидают сбивать деньги на заинтересовавшихся игрой пользователях - это манипуляция, ведь ты начинаешь продукт, который не можешь закончить. И вне зависимости от качества самой игры - подход к игрокам в корне не верный. За что я благополучно вам и наcру под дверь негативным обзором. Уже какая-никакая, но выгода с заскамленного мамонта.
