One of the puzzles that a secret agent is asked to guess what state a substance is from a letter....yes that's why you spend millions training your agents to find out the form of subtances and then leave.
Another had a top of the line PHD holder use just a single word as a password - research facilities don't allow them to use that through their web functions even if they wanted to it didn't make sense.

Plus some 'puzzles' require website access and those websites always got flagged in my browser as unsafe and not updated so it wasn't really worth digging into everything in it.
This was probably better off if the simulator was done in game where they would have better control over the game itself rather than leave it to webmasters to outdo.
All of the above could be because the game is 10 years old but that is the status today as i found it as of the date of writing this review.

Great concept. I love these altered reality type games. Really fun missions and great story that pulls you through. Bit harder to play these days due to broken links etc... I can only image what it was like to play when it first came out!

No nie siadło, wynudziłem się strasznie
Not the typical ARG, I found myself being drawn, addicted to this game. Spent hours on another account and I felt like a special agent during my sessions.
Each case is very well made, loved every compaign and the whole Lovecraft universe was so entertaining (Rosenberg, when I catch you).
I've made it until the DLC "Alone in the Dark Web", so I'm quite proud of my rank :D ("Mother of Russia" made me want to plug every hair I had on my big head).
I want to thank you Alice&Smith Studio for making this game, it has been an incredible journey even if I sacrificed evey last neurons cells I had on it, it was all worth it.
Plus I acquired so much knowledge and skills thanks to this game, truly I can't recommend it enough.
(PS : The soundtrack is still creeping me out to this day, it's haunting my nights. AND I STILL WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO CONTACT ME OMG).

An interesting and unique game with lots of ways to research and obtain info. It does give you the option to have higher levels of gameplay but they require more of your personal info so not for me. Still there is lots to do and sometimes can be a bit difficult. Overall a fun game which makes you sort of feel like your an agent.

I tried coming back to this game after while, and was immediately reminded why I never finished. The game is fine but everything else is too volatile. For instance, one of the first missions in the game stopped working after I put in a code wrong(on an external site). I had to reset my cache and cookies in my browser to get it all working again, only for it to happen again on another step later on. Then, thanks to me resetting my cache and cookies, the archive, the main thing the game is based around, stopped working too. After trying for 10 minutes to get it to work again, I'm giving up on this game, again.
0/10, go play a different game because the devs don't seem to care about this one.

The concept is really cool but I had two issues with it: 1) it feels too much like work, which isn't fun. And 2) it doesn't appear to really be active anymore. The live events and working together aspect seemed really neat but it seems quite inactive from that respect. For example, the discussion board only has 2 pinned comments from the developers - one from 2017 - which is quite odd. Not sure if I am missing something, but the community aspect of it seems to be a thing of the past. So you're really just playing a game that requires research online - so multiple screens recommended and it gets really tedious if you're playing on one screen.
Loving the puzzles and the ARG aspects! Haven't even finished Season 1 and I'm hooked!
Excited to pick up this game from Nite Team 4 I was actually, kind of disappointed.
If you've ever played Nite Team 4, you know those Open World Missions that Alice and Smith used to make? Well, this game is it. On a psychotic level. I thought "Ya, this game would be a nice relaxant and get me involved deeper into The Black Watchman that Nite Team 4 always talked about" HAHA. NOPE.
This game goes over a buuuuuuuuuunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up topics. Human experimentation a big one, as well as delving into what is pretty much, satanic cults. I like that idea.
It also mixes it with a bunch of stuff that I must not be galaxy brained enough to understand. Alice and Smith goes HARD on puzzling. I got sick of it after about 2 hours of a constant cycle of
1.racking my head with missions,
2. seeing a guide for said mission, then
3. going "Yeah, how the ♥♥♥♥ was I supposed to figure that one out?"
I wish I could give a conditional recommendation. So I'll leave it positive at it's price point.
Do NOT buy this game if you are in it for just lore, this game will rip your ass a new one.
DO Buy this game if you feel that every other game has failed you on puzzles.

A mind racking game that really makes you test your analysis skills
Fun Puzzle game!
Well, I tried and honestly it's just too complicated. First of all, the websites they send you too are sometimes full of ads and not super clear on how you should use them, then many clues are way too random to be of any use. Sometimes you can brute force the answers, other times you have to use decryption software with hard to get encryption keys.
Welp, I tried. It's a great idea, but you have to have a lot of time on your hands to try and get through this game. Sadly, for me, it's a slog.
EDIT : Still... I'm bad a this game. And I'll be honest about it : it's not you, it's me. The lore didn't catch me, the puzzles did'nt catch me... but it should've. Kudos to the devs : it should be impossible to develop this kind of game (In the pdfs you receive, they "print" infos on where you're from, even out from the US). Maybe my negqative review is because I'M bad at this game and I would love to be good, but, still, I had a bad time. Developer's answer gave me hope I would be less bad (still, I'm bad, not the game or devs), but I guess it's just not for me.
Maybe a pen and paper RPG option would be cool? I know I'm up for it! You have the lore... make it shine!

I got this game in a pack that was on sale with some of their other games and I really enjoy when companies combine so many ideas and transmedia into one place - I was super looking forward to playing as I have never heard of thisbefore!
But... Maybe I decided to play this too late... as I couldn't get past the second tutorial mission because the external link for the archive is down or something :/
I can't really recommend something I can't play, so hopefully if they renew it or update the game to include some missing information, I can try again sometime!
Some of these puzzles are NO JOKE; there really needs to be more games like this. It's a masterpiece--and fyi, it's tied into the epic hacking adventures found in NiteTeam4.
Was one of my all time favourite games which I decided to play all over again. Unfortunately it appears some links etc no longer work making the game unplayable.
I would rave about this game to anyone who would listen before and if the link issues are fixed i will again but in its current state i cant recommend anyone buy it.

I honestly don't know what to do anymore...
First off... The tutorial still requires outside help, the pastebin logins still don't work, and to top it off the discussions page has been completely erradicated so you can't report this stuff. And for those saying "Blah blah pastebin blah blah" there was a set up link to the stuff in it by a helpful person that is now gone. Their discord link on the page apparently doesn't work (I don't know if it's the server, the link, my discord app or whatever but that's neither here nor there."
I really like Niteteam 4. I really wanted to play this game too... But their 'revamp' has forgotten the tutorial, the ONE THING I NEED TO FINISH to play this game...
This game is now uninstalled, hidden and never played again. I wish I could get my refund but I like the other two A&S games so I won't complain too much.

As a low-key conspiracy nut myself and ARG lover this game really scratches that itch. I will admit though the UI can be somewhat obnoxious, and I think it's kind of weird that for a game where you spend 99% of your time tabbed out, it forces itself into fullscreen by default. Regardless, good game.
i opted in for the ultra immersion mode and they sent masked men to my house. they kicked my door off the hinges and beat me within an inch of my life. they took everything in my house and called me a little ♥♥♥♥♥ when they left. that one guy is right this game is life changing

The game aside, I have an issue I don't find acceptable.
This game requires a user account. That's fair enough.
However it does not allow you to change your username, email or to delete your account.
There is in fact no such thing as a profile page as you would expect from any normal online/account service.
I have no idea if this is in compliance with EU law, but from a UX pov this feels very wrong.
Even going to the developer's web page, there is no such thing as a support section or even a FAQ page.
I genuinely can not believe that this oversight has existed multiple years into the lifespan of this game.
If the developers read this: Please fix this. It's a bare minimum and a necessity.
No cóż... Z jednej strony genialny pomysł na rozgrywkę i autentycznie trudne i wymagające zagadki. Plus teorie spiskowe, historie, mity itd. Jednak z mojej perspektywy dość szybko wyparowała atmosfera komputerowego agenta z Archiwum X, a w to miejsce wstąpiła żmudna dłubanina. I trzeba przyznać, że to też ma swoją wartość - przecież to właśnie tak z pewnością wygląda praca agenta wywiadu nie zaś pościgi i wybuchy, a jednak w pewnym momencie wkrada się znużenie. A zatem warto zagrać, nawet bardzo, ale trzeba jednak trochę tę przyjemność dawkować. A wtedy będziecie się świetnie bawić!

Manche Internetseiten auf die das Spiel verweist existieren teilweise nicht mehr oder man landet irgendwo anders weil n Zahlendreher oder so drin ist.
Die Rätsel sind auch eher eine Geduldsprobe als alles andere (Viel Copy/Paste).
Einige Achievements kann man nicht mehr bekommen, da sie Event abhängig sind und diese nicht mehr stattfinden.
Hatte NULL Lovecraft feeling btw.

Fabulous game, very interesting and well made. Played with my friend on a call and was equally as fun as alone.
This game was so fun! I love ARGs and I loved to see the puzzles! Although some links were dead, they did try to fix most of them, and it was really fun to play this game! I love puzzle games, and although I may have missed the live events, it's still fun to play those that are inside!
Fairly decent puzzle game. You're given some vague info and then sent off to figure out what to do. Some levels have game made websites for you to be on, others you have to use the vague info you were given and scour the internet looking for relevant info until you find it. Season 1 is self contained in that all you need is the game and the internet. Season 2, unfortunately, requires downloading some software (which they provide free links for) in order to solve the puzzles. So if you don't want to download a bunch of data manipulation software, don't bother with season 2.
This is an amazing game if you like anything occult, cryptology, and going down wikipedia rabbit holes trying to figure out what manner of being you are investigating.
Glad to see the developers started supporting this again. A very unique experience, not like any "game" I've ever played. Very difficult and time consuming, definitely not for everyone.

Oyun ilk başlarda beni heyecanlandırmıştı ama oynayınca sıkmaya başlıyor. Oyundaki her bulmaca uğraştırıcı ve aslında basit şeyler. Zaten googleda olan şeyleri diyor. burdaki bilgiler bozulmuş onları yeniden doldur. Öbür kelimelerden araştırma yaparak wikiden buluyorsunuz sonra okuyup o boşluğu dolduracak kelimeyi buluyorsunuz. Bir görevinde ise sizden "heavy water" sipariş etmenizi istiyor. Verilen sayfalarda ise o kimyasalın bilimsel ismi yazılmış. Yani ihtiyacınız olmayan bilgileri boş boş size araştırdığı bir oyun. Sıkıcı, basitçe ve uğraştırıcı bulmacaları var. Arkasındaki fikir güzel ama hiç ihtiyacım olmayan bilgileri araştırmak istemiyorum. Ben eğlenmiyorum açıkçası. Gidin rastgele bir sayfa açın wikipediadan onu okuyun aynı şey.
Fun and enjoyable when it first came out. However, when I decided to pick it up again and finish it answers have been impossible to find. That's the issue with ARGs. If IRL websites decide to change their information/addresses etc, the answers no longer fit the game. You shouldn't spend an hour or more searching for an answer you will never find because the IRL company changed addresses... this wouldn't be an issue if the game was updated...
I'm replaying it after 2 years or so. Forgot most of the puzzles and didnt get that far. Loving the escape room vibe it gives.
Game has several achievments locked behind limited time events that aren't available anymore.

This game is everything I wanted it to be, it has a little bit of everything and it makes you want to do math. It is some of the scariest ♥♥♥♥ out there because it only wants your phone number and address and it's all about some science stuff but there is also this thing where it includes a bunch of actual addresses outside of the known game where you pretty much have to visit and no they are not forums, and there are so many places you really have to go and like there really shouldn't need security on the players to do that because like then it just invades all the places you need to go and like then they aren't so classified because you have a bunch of old men who just need to stick their head into anything and everything who aren't even playing a game, and they refuse to pay for it like the idiot players who don't even know what a parking ticket is so like you basically have these 50 year old perverts you have to fight off all the time but the game is really good once you can finally get to it.
So like it has everything and it will scare the bejesus out of you and like all the heebiejeebies and I'm quite frankly jealous because it is everything I want my game to be. And at the price of $14.99 CAD it pretty much is a steal because you really never know what It will throw at you and just because it wants you to get a physical and sign a personal injury waiver doesn't mean anything will happen, there are simply alot of puss out there who pretty much sue all the game creatirs if they can't think enough to actual get through a serious and thought provoking game about like people who like make watches or something, who knows but there is science involved and somehow it makes doing math fun but I'm pretty sure that's exactly how math was designed to be and it's also not so intentional with how it is displayed.
The bottom line is that the game title and icon are really elegant and anyone who has this game is a lucky to be alive and have it. And sometime it will send you some random mail with like money and questions to figure out but I don't think many stores accept that kind of money but like it's something.

I currently play it and it's awesome! It's not tough anyhow as some reviewers mentioned.
You just need to use Google + your head. Sure, for average pubg enjoyer this game might be difficult.
At least they haven't participated in Cicada in 2012. That was tough! When you should detect and decipher (hidden) manuscripts from a tiny jpeg file to have an expression in some ancient language. You should get the meaning of it which would give you a random hash of some unknown standard to get a link to see a bunny and a title "you did a mistake."
Compared with Cicada, this game is 1/5 with its toughness.
Cicada was tough, this - ain't. However, I completely enjoy my time with this game.

Nice game where you investigate and learn alot you of things you wouldn't expect to learn. Some of the missions are really hard and you feel like a god when you solve them.
Should you buy this game?
well, if you're into ARG's, this is the go to if you want one that you can take at your own pace.
but be aware, this is basically themed homework, REALLY good homework, tho.
So think about it, look around, read up on it, and see if you want to care about pigpen cypher.

The problem with them is they hit a bad spot right in between "too constrained" and "too broad" with how many possible approaches to a problem are valid - lots of options appear to be available, but only one will give you the specific solution you need. Games, especially computer games, only allow a certain range of possibilities, but most of the time they do a good job of telegraphing what those possibilities are. Real life offers many more possibilities and approaches. And in The Black Watchmen, the player's challenge isn't to algorithmically figure out the answer or apply a learned skill - it's to intuit what the developer wants you to do. And I think that's a PITA sometimes.
As an example, mild spoilers for Mission 11-2:
[spoiler]The answer to the test is in a document hidden on the intranet that you access by hacking into the secretary's account. It has nothing to do with the photos you're given as "evidence", so most of your clues out of the gate are red herrings. As for the secretary - unless you're the kind of hacker who methodically tries to compromise every single person's email, regardless of relevance, there's no reason why you would even try to break into her account - she's not a person of interest in the organization you're spying on. You wouldn't even learn of her existence unless you emailed the company's info address, which again you have no reason to do unless you're unusually meticulous about trying every possible input. The game doesn't encourage you to try every possible input, either - if you email anyone else, you just get error messages, so why would the info address be any different? [/spoiler]

seems to be dead with some obvious things that are broken since the last time i played a few years ago. a great concept but i feel NITE team 4 is taking the devs time and energy nowadays.
Best mystery game hands down.
