When people use the term "cinematic games" they should be talking about games like this. It genuinely felt like watching a horror movie but in game form. I felt the creeping dread in my stomach, truly never knowing what was going to happen next. It even took a movie length amount of time to finish, which felt key to the experience. It also doesn't hold your hand and takes a minute to get used to, but that really enriches the game for me. Definitely a 10/10 in my opinion, and I'd recommend to anyone who loves horror or just ps1 style graphics!

Glorified flash game with an insubstantial story
fantastic experience executed magnificently. From the menacing arctic atmosphere to the vague air of menace that surrounds the events cataloged, this game understand its strengths and plays on them perfectly.
Fans of horror gems like The Mountains of Madness, The Thing (all versions), and The Terror (season 1 as well as the book that it adapts) will enjoy this refreshing take on the genre.

some folks complained about the vague nature of the story? although i am a lore-♥♥♥♥♥ and i live for worldbuilding, i found the mysterious narrative to be rather intriguing and it served the game well. furthermore, i found the writing (as sparse as it was) to be top knotch.
i have been so impressed by this that i will likely automatically purchase future releases by this dev (hmu for playtesting! and/or spanish/portuguese localization!)!

I must really say - I'm impressed. The game is minimalistic, yet there's something eerie and unsettling about it. The developer really took me by surprise with the way the game is presented – it uses very little in the way of dialogue or dramatic music. Everything is...quiet, which only serves to heighten the sense of unease. It’s a very interesting game with a great storyline. It could have been a bit longer than just an hour, but I’d still recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark games. 7/10

Seriously, the concept of a horror game where the main gameplay is dog-sledding through an arctic region is the definition of creative. From an artistic perspective, very original and VERY refreshing. It has been a long time since I've played a video game with such an original idea.
The atmosphere is like Silent Hill 1 if it were even more desolate and barren. Some segments were so tense I genuinely squinted the whole way through, waiting for some jumpscare that never came... and that kind of leads me to my negative point.
The way the exposition is delivered, the way the tension slowly builds as your companion's dialogue becomes more and more non-sequitur, the random jump-cuts that fast forward out of nowhere, great stuff. Excellent presentation. That being said, I wanted more from the story, and more payoff. Not every question answered, just a cohesive thread to follow. Some sections felt like a genuine acid trip, and the game ends without a real conclusion. Were the deer living off the mushrooms? Did they alter the landscape, or was it just an illusion? Is the entire game a drug PSA, warning us of the dangers of shrooms?
Maybe this game could have been a six hour journey, with the mechanics fleshed out a bit more and the story given time to breathe. It reminds me of a Tarkovsky film, both the good and the bad. Still worth a playthrough, I think.

Really enjoyed playing this!! It was interesting, quite unsettling in some parts, and while the story itself was a little bit confusing for me, that may just be a fault on my part lol. Loved the doggos, however I did not like the stampede scene.....nearly made me ragequit XD

Просто отвратительная игра. Психоделическая муть ещё и без русского языка, прошёл её за 68 минут, и это я ещё тупил немного, так ещё быстрее можно. Жаль что купил 2 месяца назад и рефанд сделать уже нельзя. Нереальная хрень а не игра, обожрались грибов, постреляли в оленей, и всё это в ужасной графике с закосом под PS1. Оооочень тягучая и нужная игра реально, вообще никому не рекомендую, а всем кто купил делайте сразу возврат средств. Я понимаю что авторов надо поддерживать за старания, но такие игры как эта вряд ли заслуживают внимания и тем более денежного вознаграждения. Извини меня автор но ты сделал говно.

eerie, atmospheric, and at times rather unsettling. not a long game, but just the right length for the story it wants to tell. the visuals are as striking as they are bleak, and the ambience and music are used effectively, being sparse without leaving you wanting. well worth the price of admission.

I'm not sure how I stumbled across this game, but I'm glad I did. It's short, you can beat it in an hour, and there is a little bit of replay value in getting the achievements and just listening to the story again with the knowledge of what's to come. I typically play story driven games, so this was right up my alley. I like the sled mechanics and that you can interact with the dogs. What I don't like is the scientist's creepy smile.

La historia es MUY complicada, pero muy llamativa, se cuenta casi como escenas. De repente apareces en otro momento en el tiempo. La jugabilidad sirve para contar la historia básicamente. Me gustó. That Which Gave Chase is a first-person atmospheric horror game, where the retro PSX graphics give pixelated life to Aslak Karlsen Hauglid's baleful story. You play as a nameless dog musher escorting a scientist on an expedition into the frigid wilderness of the Arctic. Along with the cold, suspicions and mistrust soon begin to creep in. The reason behind this expedition, as well as its eventual fate are both things that only time will tell.
The game has an amazing story, so I will avoid giving more details about its plot now. Some of my thoughts on the game's story and specifically on the ending are written in the comments below. Feel free to read them if you have already played the game and I am more than willing to discuss about it.

With an atmospheric slowburn narrative, That Which Gave Chase is mostly linear, with exploration being limited but rewarding. Small tidbits of lore are available for the player to find out during various sections. While the game's progression is linear, the story is not: jumpcuts are random and frequent. They are also a source of constant uncertainty and anxiety, greatly enhancing the horror aspect of the game. As the dread builds up, the tension becomes almost unbearable. An ominous feeling gave chase with the game's start and it followed me well after the credits had rolled.

Remember, you were so eager to chase the answers. How long will it take you to realise that the answers have been chasing you back all this time? Before the cold lulls you into sleep, try hard to listen through the noise. You might be able to faintly hear yourself failing the test, again and again. Until the fear and the doubt are gone and you have passed through the sieve. Until the chase is over.

A nice short horror game
This game perfectly captures the dread and madness brought on by long Arctic expeditions. The time jumps really gave everything a sense of hopeless mundanity.
The game reminded me of The Terror quite a bit, which is probably my favourite piece of media in this particular genre.

Lots of horror games have me on edge because I'm waiting for a jumpscare. That's easy. And cheap. This one had me on edge because I was genuinely uneasy the entire time. Highly recommend. Also it's short so like even if you don't like it you haven't wasted a lot of time. Uh. Go buy the game buy it now.
The atmosphere indeed made me curious and while the visual style is nice following old PlayStation games like Arctic Eggs does, but the gameplay inside it felt like it has no point and tedious. Also delivery of narrative wasn't clear, so would say not fan of this game. But I think this is a step before something bigger and worth experiencing.

While not a particularly scary game, That Which Gave Chase has strong atmosphere and is an enjoyable short horror experience. Just be aware, when I say short, I mean it. This game is like 1 hour long. Nothing here is groundbreaking but for a $5 full price, it's worth a shot for fans of the genre.

I play a lot of horror games, and I'm used to games that aren't necessarily super action-packed or straight forward in their narrative.
I did not enjoy this game. Non-liner story telling is fine, but the 'jumps' felt arbitrary and confusing. It never felt like we were jumping to an interesting point in the story, but just to a random location at a random time of day. The narrative itself was difficult to follow, even when considering environmental story hints such as notes and sign posts. Gameplay itself was confusing and often was just bumbling around the map hoping that I'm going where I'm supposed to be going.

A good, atmospheric fever dream with PSX graphics.
Finishing the game will take you around 1 hour unless you try to find some hidden postsigns which I did not really feel compelled to do.

Top notch little one hour game. The creeping horror is present from the very first scene, the exposition is consistently interesting, and the graphics serve the story incredibly well. Some of the "gameplay" sections are a little immersion breaking, but not enough to ruin the experience. Play it.

The game is very atmospheric and appealing, but not much else. If you see this game on a heavy discount or as part of a cheap bundle, I say it's worth a try. I hope to see more from this developer.
Letting the player adjust the sensitivity for when they're scoped in would have been really nice, because it's extremely unwieldy to have the same sensitivity when you're scoped as unscoped. Especially when you need to aim quickly, like at the end of the game.
That's really my only complaint though. Really neat game, and I'm glad I purchased it at full price :)

This is one of those games where the less you know about it I think the better an experience you will have. If you like slow burn horror and especially horror that takes place in crazy inhospitable cold tundras, you need to play this one.
Turn off dithering as soon as you load the game and thank me later.

A simple, simply wonderful, and beautifully understated atmospheric horror. It knows how to make you feel alone. And how to make you feel like you're not. There's not a particularly complex gameplay loop, but that works to its advantage. It pushes you forward, and invites you to look around, not matter how much you're rightfully scared to do so.

I don't write legit reviews much, but as I've gotten older and can appreciate actual reviews and have formed my own opinions on art, I have to say that this is a solid piece of storytelling. Visually, it's very "of a time" being that it's stylized to have that grainy, PS2-era look that's had a massive resurgence, but those games mostly focus on the "boomer-shooter" gameplay and gore. This is less of a videogame, and more a medium for fugus/memory loops. There are a lot of books out there that deal with protagonists undergoing strange lapses in memory, hell, there are even books that have the whole mycology aspect too. This is probably the best medium for storytelling in this disjointed, non-linear way. Sure, film can do non-linear storytelling, same with books, but by making it an interactive piece, the instant transitions translate better. It's a very pretty game, it's interesting, it's short, etc., etc. I think overall this is a very eerie game, and I think for $5 it's a worthwhile piece of art/interactive film to own.

Be aware: this is not a game for everyone. But it's a great narrative and atmospheric game that gave me the chills. I loved the story, the ambientation and the final part is amazing. Worth to experiment.

Una cosa es programar un juego de terror utilizando un aspecto retro, olvidándose de lo visual para centrarse en el terror de lo psicológico y la narrativa y otra muy distinta es lo que hace este juego de manera soporífera. Y es que hay otros muchos títulos indie de este estilo muchísimo mas recomendables que el que nos ocupa.
That Which Gave Chase únicamente destaca en su forma de narrar la historia, en como a través de elipses temporales se transmite la sensación de cada vez estar en un lugar mas y mas recóndito y profundo....solo que lo hace de manera desastrosa.
Si por lo menos la mecánica del trineo fuese correcta...pero ni eso se salva , es robótica , cutre y te saca por completo de la historia.
En resumen, por los dos euros que cuesta en oferta no se te va a descuadrar el mes, pero lo dicho : es café para los muy cafeteros.

A non-linear narrative experience. I enjoyed the game, it's short and impactful. The well executed jump cuts here and there gives it a cinematic representation of time cutting between scenes which is quite unique on games.
