SWAT 3 was the third Police Quest: SWAT game. The first to drop the title of the franchise it was originally part of. It switched from being a pseudo adventure game to being an FPS. It takes a more Rainbow Six inspired approach only with a greater focus on police procedure. The player needs to report suspects, collect evidence and most of your missions deal with small scale engagements. One of the first missions for instance is a suspect barricaded inside his house. This gives the game a great sense of identity compared to most tactical FPS's.

However there is a big elephant in the room. And that's its sequel: SWAT 4. In almost every way SWAT 4 is the better game, except in one. SWAT 3 is a much faster paced FPS and at times it even feels like a run and gun one. It's even more fun to replay than Rainbow Six because of how fast the player moves. But at the same time issuing commands to your squadmates is so slow and clumsy in comparison to 4 that you inevitably need to slow down eventually. It also runs much worse than SWAT 4 and takes a lot more work to get running correctly.

Ultimately you are spoiled for choice as I can easily see why people really like 3, but I can also see why 4 is the more fondly remembered game.

Really solid tactical shooter, incredible AI for the time and great level design (other than the sewer level lol.) Below is a step-by-step guide to run it on modern hardware.

1. Get the game

2. Install it on Steam

3. Download the LAST RESORT mod -->
https://www.moddb.com/games/swat-3/addons/last-resort-setup-v087

4. Download dgVoodoo2 --> https://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/bin/dgVoodoo2_86_5.zip

5. Install LAST RESORT by running the downloaded setup. No, it isn't a virus but you're pc may flag it as one. NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, then click "Browse..." --> ProgramFilesx86 --> Steam --> Steamapps --> common --> double click the SWAT 3 Game Folder. Install and tick/untick if you want a desktop icon, etc. The mod upscales textures, allows for modern resolutions and optimization.

NOTE - TO GET LAST RESORT TO WORK YOU HAVE TO LAUNCH SWAT 3 ONCE USING THE "Last Resort" EXE INSTEAD OF LAUNCHING SWAT 3 THROUGH STEAM. AFTER YOU HAVE DONE IT ONCE, IT WILL SAVE THE SETTINGS YOU PUT INTO THE LAUNCHER AND YOU CAN LAUNCH THE GAME ON STEAM WITH NO ISSUES.

6. Right click the dgVoodoo download file, then extract it into the same SWAT 3 game folder from the previous step. Once you've extracted the files into the folder, open the "MS" folder, then click "x86." Copy the four files inside. Paste them into the SWAT 3 game folder. Then, click the yellow dgVoodooCpl file in the SWAT 3 game folder and a window will open where you can customize your game settings. Click the "DirectX" tab, and then untick the "dgVoodoo Watermark" box at the bottom right. Click apply. Settings can be tweaked more later if needed. dgVoodoo functions as a program that smoothens 3D rendering in old games and removes the choppiness of the standard SWAT 3 steam release, making it a smooth and playable experience.

Now launch the game and everything should work fine. Pro tip: in the settings menu, go to your settings and rebind your controls. I recommend WASD for movement, SPACE to interact, and Q/E for peeking.

PS - Open the console in game (SHIFT + ~) and type "handsup" to allow your playermodel to be visible from your POV :)

ALSO - The multiplayer still works, all you need is Hamachi. Just make sure to click "LAN" after multiplayer and have your friends join your Hamachi server. Then they click multiplayer and there your lobby is, etc, etc. The multiplayer is really fun and you can set it up so you and your peers can control your own squads of SWAT members at the same time.

Ignore negative reviews, you can play the game by only installing last resort mod and dgVoodoo2. AI in this game aged like fine wine. Devs really don't have an excuse when a game from 1999 can have an AI this good.

The game only has 2 flaws. Firstly, you can only give clear command on edges of the entrances, this causes some issues for very long tunnels that only have one direction. Secondly, officers can't open that damned kitchen door in the last level by themselves, it's also not interactable. So, you have to push the door yourself, causing you to expose yourself to anything lies behind the door. Other than these 2 flaws, the game runs and plays perfectly.

Even with unofficial patches for [i]SWAT 3: Tactical Game of the Year Edition[/i] fails to be anything more than a relic of a bygone era. As with all video games from the 90s, even when supposedly updated years later, the controls are maddening, enemies blend in easily with their low-resolution environments, and no optimization has been provided for modern devices, as demonstrated by the intense frame drops that occur when pop-ups appear on the screen during missions. This product borders dangerously on the level of unplayable, and consumers would be better entertained by playing [i]SWAT 4[/i] (2005).

Es un juego antiguo, pero muy adelantado a su época. Tiene varios escenarios, con elementos variables, entonces no se vuelve monotono. La jugabilidad es estupenda, y si bien requiere un poco de configuración para poder jugarlo debido a su antigüedad, vale totalmente la pena dar un par de vueltas en la comunidad para encontrar una solución.

시작옵션에 -nointro 넣어야 한다는 걸 포럼에서 찾아보고 정상적으로 플레이하려면 모드도 설치해줘야한다.

그렇게 들어오면 출시일과 걸맞는 수준의 해상도를 자랑한다.
심지어 창모드로 전환할 수도 없음.

알트탭하면 마우스가 없어지는 버그가 있어 게임을 키는 순간부터 끄는 순간까지 게임에만 집중해야 하는 게임.

옛날 게임 특유의 불편함도 있다. 기본적으로 움직이는 키가 방향키다.
그 상태에서 마우스도 써야하고 기울이기 등 다른 키도 사용해야한다.

무언가 시도를 많이해서 다양한 기능이 있지만 너무 세분화되어있다.
기울이기 키를 한 번 더 누른다고 돌아오지 않는다.
'안' 기울이기 키를 설정해줘야한다.

I know that swat 3-4 are definitely amazing games. I am just not some sort of computer scientist to be able to install 3 without it being so unplayably buggy that I cant navigate off of the first menu. I tried installing those mods that everyone is talking about. I'm a humble man. I don't know how to hack into the mainframe and that.
(steam aint even got 4, Had to install GOG. Dodgy. first game download I've had to trust other than steam. Don't like it.)

It’s a pain in the ass to get working on modern-day hardware, and pretty much nothing is explained to the player, including many of the core mechanics which weren’t a part of any other game at the time and generally still aren’t today. That said, after about an hour of troubleshooting and familiarisation, you’ll be able to properly play what I’d consider to be one of the best tactical shooters on the market.

It’s leagues above any entry to the Rainbow Six series, and as much as I like Ghost Recon, the urban CQC setting of this game does just enough to carry it to the top of my list. Where Rainbow Six was more about planning an approach, SWAT 3 is much more about improvisation and coming up with solutions on the fly. Instead of a pre-arranged route, you get a wide range of commands you can issue to your squad, who you’ll have to rely on at least a little in order to successfully accomplish your mission. The one thing these three franchises truly have in common is that they all need to be played in short bursts.

The main campaign has sixteen missions. Most of them are pretty generic, but they get the job done. No clue what the devs were smoking when they designed that sewer level, though. On top of the main campaign is a secondary ten-man campaign added in the GOTY edition. It features two new maps, both of which have their own merits, but the rest of the campaign is just recycled maps with very simple objectives. Surprisingly enough, there are also nine bonus missions you can’t find in either campaign, and honestly, these are some of the most memorable ones in the entire game. Pretty strange design choice if you ask me.

Aside from the technical issues I alluded to in my opening sentence, the only real problem I have with this game is that there’s always at least six people screaming over eachother at any given moment (You, your team, and TOC). That aside, it’s a good game. Now all we need is for Microsoft to tell Activision to tell Sierra to release SWAT 4 on Steam. God, what a mess.

Que puedo decir!!!! Es un clásico, uno de mis juegos favoritos de la infancia, lo jugué un par de cientos de veces, recuerdo que para su momento era muy avanzado, hoy en día Resdy or not es un sucesor espiritual, que si bien mejora mucho los gráficos, sigue siendo el mismo juego.
Recuerdo que los tiroteos eran muy intensos y las tácticas para la época eran las mejores
Para los nostálgicos se los recomiendo, y para los nuevos ignoren los gráficos y denle una oportunidad.

Hallo ich empfehle dieses Spiel definitiv nicht! Allerdings für 2001 (angeblich) ist es sehr gut. Dennoch wurde ich zu tiefst enttäuscht da wir uns im Jahr 2024 befinden oder nicht?! Also Fazit Grafik ist aus 2010 maximal, Es gibt viele Missionen muss man sagen, allerdings sind diese sehr einfach gehalten. Dazu kommt es gibt keine Erklärung WARUM MAN NICHT MIT W,A,S,D LAUFEN KANN. Sowie das man Türen nicht aufbrechen kann obwohl es das Spiel verlangt (oder man kann es doch aber es gibt keine Erklärung wie dies geht)? Dazu kommt das die Einstellungen bzw. der Button garnicht erst richtig erkennbar ist (dachte erst es gibt keine Options) und joa. Kauft es einfach nicht!

Need non-official patchs to work properly on the new versions of Windows (anything later than Windows 2000 I suppose).
If you have more than one monitor the game glitchs and is opened in a weird resolution. If you Alt+Tab the game it also brokes to never again work in a descent manner.

Glad this Game is here. I really loved it back in the days and still do. Its a bit clunky and the AI is not the greatest, but it is super fun and you feel very immersed.

For everyone having trouble to get this game to run stable: Search for dgVoodoo2. It makes the Game running without issues, you only have to copy some .dll files into the Game folder, so directX functions properly.

SWAT 3 was the best game in the SWAT Franchise, in fact best game in the entire Police Quest series and in my opinion it even tops Ready or Not, it really needs to be more acknowledged and it has many great features, and its even so realistic that to this day the AI makes me feel like its actually alive, though its just a bunch of coding, and note that both SWAT 4 and RoN has gmod addons but this doesn't, thats crazy.

SWAT3 hat mich als Teenager absolut in den Bann gezogen, weshalb ich sogar kurzfristig meinen Berufswunsch von Pilot zu Polizist geändert habe. Das Spiel ist ein Urgestein der Taktik-Shooter, die heute leider sehr rar geworden sind und heute fernab von jedem Mainstream sind.

Zum Spiel selbst möchte ich nicht mehr viel sagen. Technisch gesehen ist das Spiel nicht mehr wirklich zeitgemäß. Was ich bei Release damals noch als optische Perle betitelt hab, ist heute schon stark angestaubt. Spielerisch dagegen macht der Shooter auch heute noch etwas her. Stumpfes herumballern wird bestraft, taktisches Vorgehen ist wirklich dringend notwendig. Die Tactical GotY-Edition entspricht wohl der deutschen Elite-Edition. Leider müsst ihr komplett auf die deutsche Sprachausgabe verzichten und leider sind auch einige Bugs auf modernen Betriebssystemen zu sehen. Sei es das taktische Menü, wo komplett die Schrift fehlt oder einige Grafikfehler. Nichts desto trotz ist das Spiel auch heute noch gut spielbar. Aber nur für Fans von Taktikshootern und alt eingesessenen Nerds, die das Spiel von früher kennen.

Серия S.W.A.T. еще с давних времен первой и второй частей воспитала во мне любовь к тактическим шутерам. Даже не смогу вспомнить сколько часов я наиграл как во вторую часть, так и в третью с четвертой, особенно в четвертую. Разумеется, мое прохождение было последовательным и по факту удалось увидеть рост серии и все ее недостатки. Перед началом отзыва я заранее скажу, что S.W.A.T. 4 по прежнему для меня лучшая игра серии, в которой тактические моменты и геймплей находятся на невероятном уровне и до сих пор не постижимы никаким другим "симулятором" бойца специального назначения.
Для начала расскажу что это вообще за игра. S.W.A.T. представляет вам эдакий симулятор бойца специального назначения, а точнее его руководителя, чья непосредственная задача заключается в выполнении заданий по спасению граждан от различных угроз. В основном это террористические акты, захваты заложников и другие преступления, в которых важна скорость и точность действий, а также жесткость и хладнокровие. Перед началом каждой миссии необходимо выбрать снаряжение и отряд, в котором главным элементом являются умения и девайсы сослуживцев. В зависимости от миссии можно выбрать летальное и не летальное оружие, что позволит улучшить рейтинг прохождения и спасти заложников без смертей. Ботам из отряда можно давать команды: взломай дверь, огонь, связать врага и т.п.
Во время самой миссии проблем не должно возникнуть. Пускай это не совсем типичный шутер, но игра все же о стрельбе. Здесь главное правильно использовать возможности команд управления отрядом и своими девайсами. Тактика в принципе будет решать исход каждой миссии, поэтому обязательно обращайте внимание на все, что покажется вам странным или необычным. Лучше лишний раз перестраховаться, чем потерять заложника и провалить миссию. Советую перед каждым входом в помещения проверять периметр и по возможности заглядывать в окна и за углы с безопасного расстояния, чтобы выбрать правильную тактику и не испортить прохождение.
Технически игра не отличается от своего ближайшего собрата Rainbow Six 3, который пускай и обогнал S.W.A.T. в графической части, но ничуть не приблизился как тактический шутер. Графика выглядит на уровне своего времени производства (уже в данном случае ретро). И да - она вряд ли запустится на Windows 8, поэтому будьте готовы к "танцам с бубном", если решитесь поиграть в нее. В моментах жестких перестрелок сразу всплывают все отрицательные нюансы игры в виде ее абсолютно не плавной анимации, жуткого звукового сопровождения и в целом звуков, которые накладываются один на другой без всякого микшера громкости. Если перетерпеть, то игра вознаградит вас в следующих миссиях отличным геймплеем и набором более интересных задач, чем перестрелка с захватившими дом обычной женщины вооруженными преступниками (особенно миссия с банком и закрытием нарколаборатории).
Надеюсь отзыв поможет вам определиться, стоит ли тратить время на столь древнюю по нынешним меркам игру. Скажу одно - она не зря заслуживает свое достаточно высокое место среди тактических ретро-шутеров, которые в свое время невероятным образом прославили такой невероятно сложный труд бойцов специального назначения.
Если бы была бы в стим четвертая часть, взял бы и ее. И не плохо было бы сделать мультиплеер в игре.

Absolutely brilliant game, based heavily on the much more modern "Ready or Not" title, this tactical SWAT game is a fantastic alternative to those whose setups cannot run the much-more demanding Ready or Not title. Fantastic gameplay that centers around the use of your Number-Keys to direct orders to your SWAT Teams to achieve their objectives, this is one of only a very few number of games that genuinely gives me jump-scares, when an enemy appears from around a corner and seemingly one-shots you down, every decision you make is vital and will require very careful planning and thorough use of all your Utility (flashbangs, cs gas, mirrors, lock-picks, non-lethal bullets etc), it will also require a restart here or there as each mission is very difficult in it's own unique ways. Fantastic blast-to-the-past from this nostalgia-inducing title from the brilliance of those at Sierra Studios.
COMPATIBILITY: BE PREPARED to do some work in the files of your desktop to get this thing to run on more modern OS' such as WIndows 10 and Windows 11. The game WILL run seamlessly on these OS' but you will have to follow Steam' Guides to get this game even starting-up and running in 60fps+ however, the guide I used from Steam was perfect in getting the game to run perfectly! Enjoy!

The issue I'm having is this is not the GOTY version of the game. I had the GOTY version back in the day and you had access to more weapons (M60e3 m240 m249 ak gun variants m79 thumper etc...), camo and levels, this version does not have any of the extra stuff that came with the GOTY. Recommend change in title or release the correct version of the game with all the benefits that came with the GOTY version, paid for GOTY version, expecting GOTY product. Otherwise, game works for me on win 11 provided I don't set the resolution above 800x600, the game wants to zoom in on the weapon LOS and shift the screen to the left corner of the game.

A great game, but unfortunately it is bugged from the get go. If you buy this, think of it as a speedrun to somehow get it working before the 2 week refund deadline. Computer settings, old 3rd party applications, whole launchers, theres a lot to hunt and try if you want the game to work, but its worth it. Alternatively you can get this on GOG where it works or just the 4th game for free.

Actually have over 1000hrs, play with LastResort launcher.

Its a pain to set up on win10 but well worth it. Follow the guides on steam community.
